COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
Now, That is Clean! As he peddled vacuum cleaners At this door, we will begin He found it most unusual For they said, “Come right in.”
The machine emitted decibels He simply raised his voice “The dirt will jump right out of here It really has no choice.”
They ushered him across the tile Here’s their living room He plugs into the current Now dirt, it will consume.
To see it glide across the room It was a great delight Now he removed the filter He held it to the light.
He explains the super suction It’s a pitch for super sales They listen quite intently He reviews some more details.
What the heck’s the matter? There is no residue He reinstalls the filter He gave the rug another do.
He displayed a little filter They nodded and approved It was installed to demonstrate What his sweeper had removed.
He lifts the filter, once again With no advice to share The couple gazed up at the light No dirt was clinging there.
He had some added comments He looked them in the eye This is the super sweeper It could suck the ocean dry.
Frustration ran across his face He did accept defeat She said, “Come into the kitchen We will have a bite to eat.”
The husband was the next to speak “We probably should not do it It could take her pretty carpet It could pull the nails through it.”
While he accepts her gracious offer He was searching for a clue Though they forgot to mention, The carpet, it was new.
With proper reassurance No nails are extracted Here’s a speedy demonstration How the cord it is retracted.

Throughout the 1990’s and into the early 2000’s we saw the further evolution of the definition of the “family.” Demographics forced a change in the perception of what exactly is an American family. Single parent households, unmarried couples, individuals living alone and other alternative lifestyle arrangements are becoming the norm rather than the exception. Each of these social units presents unique financial planning problems that do not fit into “cookie cutter” recommendations. Single parent families face many of the same financial problems that are posed for traditional families, yet with an added level of urgency. Disability planning for such parents is crucial because there is no live-in back-up to rely on for a source of income in the case of an event where the single parent is unable to provide. Durable powers of attorney for property management and health care directives as well as adequate insurance coverage can be saviors in such events. Trusts with reliable successor trustees can also be useful tools to address potential problems. Adequate life insurance should be present to provide for future educational, child care, home and health care expenses of the children. The financial planning challenges that confront the long-term bachelor\bachelorette are similar to those of the single parent. Disability planning is a primary consideration. Yet, basic estate planning is also important. Without a will or other tool to provide direction in the distribution of a single individual’s estate, the deceased’s property will pass according to the respective state laws of intestacy. This may be wholly opposite of the deceased’s wishes. In the case of unmarried couples, these problems are especially prevalent. Neither state laws of intestacy nor the Internal Revenue Code recognize or offer any benefits to “life partners.” For example, despite the fact that local law may recognize the concept of life partners (heterosexual or not), the tax code does not provide transfer tax “marital” deductions based on these relationships. There is no such thing as leaving all to your pseudo-spouse tax free as with traditional married couples. Thus, life insurance can play an even greater part to meet potential estate taxes. Further, in cases of incapacity where property and health decisions must be made, or where property is distributed away from a decedent’s immediate family, advanced financial planning can ward off upset family members. Many of these unusual financial planning problems arise because of conscious lifestyle decisions. But many arise due to chance or fate. Yet, the basic financial goals are the same. Each of these groups must balance their current lifestyle and finances with their future goals and needs. Each must invest their assets effectively to accomplish set goals. Each needs to protect against emergencies and hardships. Finally, each needs to decide what they want to leave behind, to whom they want to leave it, when to leave it and the most effective means of doing so. Many traditional techniques need to be modified and adapted to achieve these goals. Yet, eventually this boils down to adopting a systematic, detailed and individualized approach. Such an approach, and working with experienced professionals, is essential to effective financial planning to provide for whomever you choose to call a “family.” This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by Greg Dugdale, Branch Manager of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC.

Sudden death Calf Syndrome
It is to a rancher’s horror to find a 250 lb. calf DEAD with no evidence of why it happened. There could be many possibilities of the cause – clostridium perfringens (overeating disease); other bacterial infection; blackleg; pneumonia; lightning strike; or abdominal ulcers. Last spring about this time I was called out to a ranch because three of their big calves had been found dead in the pasture for no apparent reason. An autopsy was performed on them. Each one of those had died from a ruptured ulcer in the stomach. I tell this story because this year I was called out to a different ranch for a similar situation. They had lost two calves and an autopsy proved the same truth. Yo u may find a calf kicking at his stomach showing signs of abdominal
pain or getting up and laying down. The cause could be an abomasal ulcer. Once an abdominal ulcer ruptures, the calf develops peritonitis and will die within a few hours. The rancher will often see a calf alive and well and within a few hours he may find the calf dead and bloated. The main cause of abomasal ulcers it is a trace mineral imbalance – copper and selenium in particular, hairballs or stress. Calves on mineral that contain an antibiotic and mos (a substance that binds E. coli) will prevent many of the gastrointestinal diseases that we see in calves.

Many of us adults of today associate good things and happy memories with the tell-tale green clover we may see on a t-shirt or on a banner at the county fair. Our childhoods were spent frolicking with market animals after school and taking in a monthly business meeting with our local 4-H club. We selected projects that interested us and faced the challenges that came with learning to work with others on committees; some of us were officers and learned to foster and facilitate the success of our fellow members. We planned and performed demonstrations, overcame the jitters—we learned a lot about ourselves and how to overcome obstacles to get things done. Though we grew up to pursue our own paths, we 4-Hers all have a similar foundation, and the common denominator between so many of us is that clover. It is deeply rooted in our hands, health and heart. For over a century there have been continual efforts to provide out-of-school agriculturally based learning opportunities for young people in the United States. The history of 4-H is more of an evolution than anything; the driving force originally behind it was to bridge the gap between education and home life in rural areas. According to the 4-H Timeline, before the turn of the twentieth century, many young adults began to venture toward the cities to live and work when they came of age. They were enticed by the thought of less labor intensive careers. Surely the glitter of city life, anticipated leisure, and drawing an hourly wage sounded tempting if you were coming from a hard-working rural community background. But the debilitating effect of young adults leaving the communities they were raised in couldn’t be absorbed by their families of our great nation. Intervention was needed to re-direct the out-flux of farm kids from ag communities. Fortunately, there were individuals who sought to provide those young adults with progressive ideas and concepts that would contribute to their success while still keeping them local. By 1902, A.B. Graham, an Ohio principal, put organizational touches on the concept of after school clubs that explored farming issues, and insisted on record keeping and keeping an educational focus. Graham is considered the founder of the 4-H concept. Later, contests evolved and kids could compete with their agricultural products in organized competitive events. As time went on, it was recognized that the concept of 4-H should be supported academically by college influence and overseen at a county level. In the ‘40s and ‘50s, youth-involved farm educational clubs continued to grow and the concept of International Farm Youth Exchange began. The 4-H concept continued to develop. Single gender clubs merged together, more energy was put into organization, and the ultimate focus was shifted from the goal of progressive farming techniques education to the progressive education of the individual member— making the best better. Discovery based learning, exploring with documentation, comparing results and doing the handson work behind it are still fundamental to the 4-H experience. Developing skills,

expanding comfort zones through practicing and presenting demonstrations, going to camp in the summer, and raising market livestock are just a few of the things that make the clover symbol a mark of distinction still today. Educational, yet fun, organized events and directed project ideas bring together the exuberance of kids and the tried-and-true structure that for the rest of their lives will provide foundational skills in whatever avenue of life they choose. The 4-H clubs practice parliamentary procedure for business meetings, and spend a portion of their free time building, exploring and expanding ideas while developing leadership skills as they explore real life issues and concepts. . According to Montana’s 4-H webpage www.montana4h.org, there are in the neighborhood of 25,000 kids involved in the state of Montana alone. Amazingly, an organization that started before the turn of the 20th century has continued to thrive and be an educational opportunity for so many young people. Club members are required to attend a set number of county and/or club meetings each 4-H year, they do demonstrations, keep amazingly detailed record books and continue to grow in their interest areas as there are levels of mastery in each project area. Community service, mentoring younger members and finding ways to serve “my club, my community, my country and my worldâ€? are pledged by each member. As a 4-H parent I enjoy sitting down with my son to review the well-crafted manuals on horsemanship, swine care, and I’ll add that the rabbit project book, What’s Hoppening?, is full of activities and fun facts that are geared to his age and interest level. The original after school farm clubs were focused on corn, beef, pigs and later canning, but as we’ve seen over the years, the quantity of available project ideas is ever increasing. Currently there are in the neighborhood of one hundred projects available. Exploration and self-directed projects are also popular so members can construct and execute some of their own ideas during the 4-H year. By this time, the 2009-2010 4-H year is well underway and members have been working on their projects for several months. In the middle of April the smaller market livestock were selected, weighed and tagged. Members have been halter breaking steers since early November, keeping records on feed quantities and growth patterns and practicing their judging skills. Between now and county fair time (July/August depending on location) members will continue to work in their project manuals, perform community service, participate in fundraising activities and take care of their individual projects. In some counties, horse project members will have opportunity to advance levels at a riding assessment clinic, attend a horse show clinic and the 4-H practice horse show all before the actual 4-H horse show at the fair. Members can participate in Mini-Congress, Congress, 4-H Ambassadors, summer camp, and a host of other things that kids are directly involved in. Not only does 4-H provide an educational foundation for thousands of young people, 4-H is also a unique opportunity for adults have an impact on the next generation. Whether it is assisting with project books, giving a riding lesson or demonstrating how to match up the seams on a sewing project, 4-H would not be possible without its leaders. Seeing those beaming faces after a job well done is the icing on the cake for a lot of leaders. In the 4-H community kids develop public speaking skills, positive self esteem and they grow together in their club and their community. Raising market animals is a fun aspect of 4-h, but it is just a small part of the opportunities that the organization offers. If you want to be part of the long running, ever growing and expanding 4-H community, there is a spot for anyone. Contact your local extension office, talk with a member in your area, or try one of the websites listed. Let’s keep 4-H strong for another 100 years! Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert after crossing into the U.S., wandering aimlessly and starving. They are just about to lie down and wait for death, when all of a sudden Luis says . . . “Hey, Pepe, do you smell what I smell? Ees bacon, I theenk.” “Si, Luis, eet sure smells like bacon.”
With renewed hope they struggle up the next sand dune, and there, in the distance, is a tree loaded with bacon. There’s raw bacon, fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon . . . every imaginable kind of cured pork. “Pepe, Pepe, we ees saved. Ees a bacon tree!” “Luis, maybe ees a meerage? We ees in the desert, don’t forget.” “Pepe, since when deed you ever hear of a meerage that smell like bacon? Ees no meerage, ees a bacon tree.”
