COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

The One That Never Got Away: A Fishing Story

It was a bright and sunny day They hit the road and drive While all the fishes lie and wait, These fishermen arrive.

Expletive terms then came to light Disaster, it had struck His line, it was raveled His reel, it was stuck.

To get this story clarified There’s truth and expectations Any facts that are revealed, There’s a statute of limitations.

He grasped a pair of pliers His drink, he then consumed Amusingly, he’s cussin’ Dissection, it resumed.

Evasion of some salty quotes It’s not complete removal They had to be adjusted They may not meet approval.

He straightened out the tangled mess He replaced the nut He returned to business When the cover, it was shut.

The beverage box was opened Through the ice, it was selected He latched on to his fishin’ pole No longer, it’s neglected.

One crank upon the reel That’s when it did occur Something was attached Something grabbed his lure.

Now strolling to the river Abruptly, he did stop He paused and took another taste It’s last year’s barley crop.

It came in like an anchor Fighting, there was none He landed it upon the bank It glistened in the sun.

Morning rolled to afternoon Worms and lures were bitten He made some trips back up the hill He returned where he’d been sittin’.

“Come and see this nasty thing.” “I caught it near the dam.” Sure enough, there it was “I caught a rotten clam.” (In memory of Eldon Krueger.)

Money Talks

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana

THE HURRIER I GO THE BEHINDER I GET When are Social Security checks potentially loans and not benefits? Why, when you have “excess earnings” of course. In today’s economy, many senior citizens still work during their “retirement” either because they want to or, all too often, because they must to make ends meet. Retirees who want to work as well as collect social security retirement benefits must plan their compensation carefully if they want to avoid losing some or all of their social security benefits. In order to collect social security “old age” benefits, you must be “retired.” Congress has reasoned that if you earn more than a specified amount, you are not “retired” and, therefore, are subject to having some or all of your benefits eliminated. Congress does allow you some earnings before your benefits are jeopardized. The amount of allowable earnings depends on your age. If you are over 65, there is no limit on the amount you may earn and still collect your full benefit. If you are at least 62, but younger than 65, you may earn up to $14,160 in 2010 before your benefits are affected. The earnings limit is adjusted each year for inflation. If you earn in excess of the limit, you must repay some or, potentially, all of the benefits you receive. For every $2 you earn over the $14,160 limit, you must give up $1 of benefits. A special rule applies in the year in which you retire. In the initial retirement year, no matter how much is earned for the year, no benefits will be lost for any month in which you earn $1,180 (1/12 of $14,160) or less. For purposes of the retirement test, “earnings” are defined as “wages” earned as an employee or the “net earnings” of a self-employed person. The earnings must result from work performed after retirement. “In kind” payments of goods or services in exchange for work are considered earnings. Retirement plan distributions, rents, capital gains, interest, dividends and other investment-related income do not count as “earnings” for this purpose. You are required to report estimated earnings in excess of the limits. Benefits are then adjusted to reflect the amount owed, based on the estimate. Actual earnings figures should be reported by April 15 of the following year. Further adjustments may then be made based on actual results. An example will illustrate how Social Security benefits are reduced when a retiree has “excess earnings.” Mr. Baker is a 63 year old retired carpenter who receives $1100 per month in social security benefits. During 2009 Mr. Baker earns a net of $16,000 for some cabinets he makes and sells. Mr. Baker’s Social Security benefit will be reduced by $920 ((16,000 –14,160)/2). This brief article is no substitute for a careful consideration of your unique personal situation. Before making any significant retirement planning or tax strategy, consult your financial planner, attorney or tax advisor, as appropriate. Grass tetany

Grass tetany is a serious metabolic disorder caused by low levels of magnesium in the blood of cattle. An affected cow can be found staggering about in the pasture and if not treated she will go down, have convulsions and ultimately die. Treatment involves a slow administration of cmpk solution intravenously. Grass tetany occurs most often in the spring when temperatures are between 45 and 60 degrees

when the grass is growing rapidly. It primarily affects older cows who are nursing calves, but can also affect young cows too. Cattle should have access to high MAG mineral mix while grazing tetany prone pastures. - Dr. B

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:

by Emily Bolles

Gittin’ Wild at the Wild Horse Stampede A summer wouldn’t be complete without some serious rodeo action, and Wolf Point, Montana is the place to find it. The weekend of July 8th through the 10th, there will be three days of PRCA Wrangler sanctioned events at Montana’s historically oldest and ever famous rodeo, “The Wolf Point Stampede. Known as “the Granddaddy of Montana Rodeos, this weekend of fun won’t disappoint. Rich in history and rich in fun, people from far and wide will be gathering to take in this event. The Stampede itself has a colorful history; sources suggest there were longrunning tribal festivities going on the second week of July annually when it occurred to some local cowboys to join the fun by climbing on wild horses and stampeding through town. The town of Wolf Point was officially established in 1915, but rumor has it this was going on before then. From the original stampedes to the informal local rodeos, Wolf Point has built grandstands, bucking chutes and planned family activities to keep this rich tradition alive! The rodeo grounds were named Marvin Brookman Stadium after the long-time roughstock contractor. His dedication to the sport of rodeo and the raising of fine bucking stock will forever be celebrated. Earning “the best footing award from the WPRA, and continual ground maintenance and improvement suggest that this annual event is still going strong, this year celebrating its 87th anniversary. Daily parades, a carnival, a fun run dubbed “The Human Stampede, and street dancing every night are side attractions to the nightly rodeo entertainment. Then witness professional cowboys and cowgirls sit deep to compete for buckles and cash. Whether you’re a roughstock fan or a timed event enthusiast, this Thursday, Friday and Saturday night sports it all. Watch rodeo competitors carve out their spot on the professional circuit as you tip back a cold beverage and enjoy the perfection of a Montana summer evening. The Stampede is located in the heart of Roosevelt County in the Missouri River Valley, so there are a million ways to spend the daylight hours before the rodeo. Dip your toes in the Missouri River if the weather is hot, keep your eyes open for dinosaur bones and don’t forget to bring your fishing pole. The Wolf Point Museum is open for visitors; stop by on Highway 2. Explore native culture, take in the scenery horseback, or head out hiking on your own two feet. Fort Peck is rich in dinosaur discoveries and boasts the famous “Peck’s Rex; stop by and check out Interpretive Center Museum for more information. Don’t forget to take a trip to the Fort Union Trading Post for an education in local history. Here’s a breakdown of the major events happening at the Stampede: The weekend fun starts a little early as Monday, July 5th kicks off the Shrine Circus. Wednesday, the 7th, take the kids to the carnival and be ready to hear a plethora of musical talent at the KVCK Colgate Country Showdown in the High School

After driving for a while, he found a tyiny town with a single store. He entered the store and handed one of the bogus bills to the man behind the counter. “Can you change this for me, please?” he asked. The store clerk looked at the $18 bill for a short time, then smiled and said to the man, “Ah reckon so, Mister. Ya want two nines or three sixes?”

Loyal readers of “The Marketing Toolbox are familiar with my conviction that it’s a whole bunch easier to keep current customers or clients than it is to attract new ones. That being said, there are simple, yet specific, things a business can do to keep those clients and customers coming back to you. Here are a few gems that any business can implement immediately in retaining its best customers. 1. Ask for a follow up meeting. After the project or sale is completed, ask for a meeting to discuss results or consider new ideas. Your customer/client already is satisfied with your product or your work, so you have a level of trust established. Getting a meeting with them should be easy. 2. Ask for feedback. Find out your client’s satisfaction level with your most recent transaction, and ask if they have any suggestions for improvement. Ask if there are any other ways you can help. If your customer/client doesn’t need any more from you at this time, ask if you can check in with them at a later date. Before you close your meeting, confirm a date and time that you’ll be in touch with them – keep the door open for future business. 3. Ask for referral business. The moment your customer or client expresses satisfaction with you or your product/service is the time to ask them for a referral. You can say something like, “I’m happy you like working with us. It was a pleasure working with you as well. Can you think of anyone else who benefit from working with us? Some marketers feel this is the perfect time to get those names and numbers. I, however, don’t believe you always get qualified leads from this. I don’t discount that approach totally, because done correctly it can work well. But, try this first—sweeten the deal a bit by offering your valued customer or client something of substance if they refer their friends and family, and those friends and family in turn make the call or visit to speak with you. I am going to expound on this point more because I believe a good referral system one of the most underutilized tools available to businesses, especially in small agricultural communities like are found across Montana. Consider this: how many times have you personally checked in with your friends or family to see where they bought their big GO ONLINE TODAY and subscribe to our “trinket before you go buy one FREE marketing e-newsletter at too? How often have you heard www.Kimmel-Kreations.com. from someone else, “Where do Get useful tips like the ones in “Marketing Toolbox plus more you buy your ____?, or “Check great ideas every week! out this great new _______ that I bought! We, as human beings, tend to trust the opinion of someone we know. If you ask your customers to spread the word when they receive a great service or value from you, they’re more than happy to do that. Offer them a little incentive and they’re even more excited to share a good word about you. 4. Keep the client/customer updated. Chances are good that your valued customers will appreciate being informed of updates, new products, new services and specials your company may be offering. You can also keep them up on industry news and educate them about things that matter to your customers or clients. Do this through direct mailings, online magazines, blogs, or social media postings to name a few options. 5. Stay in touch. Your customer may not have an immediate need for your services. But that doesn’t mean they won’t someday. A “no today can easily become a “yes tomorrow; it’s simply a matter of timing. Keep your best customers at the top of your list by dropping them a line every now and then. A personal phone call or email can make a big difference in their perception of your relationship. Ultimately, you want them to keep you top of mind. Think carefully about what makes you patronize your favorite businesses – is it the customer service, the value you get, the client-business relationship? Do you feel valued as a customer? Work to create that same Know-Like-Trust factor with your own very important customers. Are you unsure of how to market your business? Do you run out of time to market because you’re too busy running your business? Kimmel Kreations, LLC offers customized “Marketing Modules to lead you through the marketing maze. We are the solution you need. 406.379.2377

big flat community organizes and selects name TURNER, MONTANA--Recently, members of the Turner/Hogeland communities voted to organize and form a 501(c)3 non-profit entity that will support school and community functions. An election was held to choose a Board of Directors, who later met to select officers and set terms. The board consists of the following individuals: Adam Billmayer, President; Johannas Brown, Vice President; Tricia Kimmel, Treasurer/Public Relations; Shannon Van Voast, Secretary; Emily Bolles, Research and Development Coordinator. The board also polled Turner High School students for possible organization names, and Haley Conlan’s submission, “Big Flat Community Grain Bin” was chosen as the formal name for the organization. Members of the community expressed a need for a way to offer a tax-deductible option for charitable donors that would benefit the Big Flat region. Several informal community forums were held over the past year to discuss different options and goals. As determined by surveys of members of the community, the funds will be used mainly to benefit the Turner School and the communities of Turner and Hogeland. The board has taken the first steps to organize and do the research necessary, and will now move forward in preparing the appropriate paperwork to file with the State of Montana and the IRS to obtain 501(c)3 status. The board is also organizing activities to raise the initial fees required for filing. If you are interested in learning more about the Big Flat Community Grain Bin and its functions, or you wish to donate to their efforts, contact Tricia Kimmel at 406-379-2512.
