COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
When You’re Hot . . . We heat our home with hunks of wood hacked off from boards and trees. Most builders give wood remnants if you ask them, and say “please”. We hate to see wood scraps abandoned, buried, left to rot When we could hault them home to warm our cabin cozy-hot. When we discovered Herman had a healthy stock of same, We offered to recycle them, transformed to heat and flame. Well, Herman hardly hesitated giving his permission Nor asking Rita for assistance making this decision. We heaved huge planks and boards around and hauled them right away. (Wood-gathering warms you several times before that first cold day.) And after sawing stove-size chunks and storing out-of-weather, We fetch them in by armloads and toast by the fire together. Now, every frosty day, we think of Herman and give thanks, And each time that we give the woodstove grate some shakes and yanks. For sharing warmth and comfort, we all owe that man a lot And we wood-burners know the truth: When you heat with Herman, you’re Hot!

Additional Notes from Mr. Mailand: “It’s hard to write poems about Herman But I think I have done ‘er, by heck! Though I mightily strove to stay civil It’s a definite pain-in-the-neck.”

ABC’s of ASSET PROTECTION
You’re doing the right things: you’re working hard, you’re saving, and you’re investing wisely. And, you’re looking forward to benefiting those you hold near and dear: yourself, your spouse, your children, your family, your employees, your business clients, your neighbors, the IRS…. What? You don’t want to benefit all those folks? Of course not. But, without a comprehensive financial plan – one that incorporates asset protection considerations - you may unknowingly be doing the right things to benefit all the wrong people. Accidents, lawsuits, taxes and other financial risks are simply the facts of life. Here are a few basic ways you can protect your assets aside from using insurance. Yes, insurance should be one of the first tools considered when building asset protection into your comprehensive financial plan. The cost of insurance is negligible compared to the possible cost of not having insurance. For example, purchasing umbrella insurance for protection from personal risk and liability coverage for protection from business risk is generally an inexpensive start. However, insurance alone never provides total protection. A is for ADVICE. Your first step is to engage professionals. You’ll need a variety: legal, tax, and financial. Asset protection should not take place in a vacuum so a multifaceted approach is necessary. Different assets are exposed to different types of risks. Depending on your specific situation, different types of risks require different types of protection be applied at different times. For example, a “qualified disclaimer” can potentially be quite useful in minimizing the portion of your family’s wealth that goes to the IRS via the estate tax. Knowing when and how much to disclaim can be very valuable advice. B is for BUSINESS. Your business is your own, not your neighbor’s. Conversely, your personal investment account is your own, not your business creditor’s. Or is it? Your business creditors may be able to reach your personal assets, and vice versa, especially if you are a sole proprietor. A partnership can be even worse, as your partner’s personal creditors may be able to reach partnership assets. Additionally, you may be personally liable for your partner’s professional actions, not just your own. Choice of business type can be instrumental in providing an asset protection element to your financial plan. Certain types of business entities and insurance products not only shield business partners from the business risks discussed; but, may also provide an efficient estate planning strategy. C is for CONTRIBUTIONS. Contribute to your employer sponsored retirement plan. Contribute to your IRA. Your employer sponsored retirement plan enjoys federally legislated creditor protection under ERISA. ERISA protects your accrued benefit in your employer sponsored defined benefit (pension) plan, 412(i) plan, profit sharing or 401(k) plan. IRAs find their protection under federal Bankruptcy laws and under state law and are generally similarly protected. Of course, this brief article is no substitute for a carefully crafted comprehensive financial plan which incorporates asset protection considerations. So, do all the right things to be certain you benefit all the right folks, before implementing any significant financial planning strategy, contact your financial planner. The Hi-Line and surrounding area is full of excitement this summer. Whether you spend your time in Phillips County at the PCMS or in Circle at a “Bump-n-Run”, you’re guaranteed a good time. Spectators far and wide appreciate the rumble of engines and surge of adrenaline as vehicles careen around and crash into one another or race to see which driver is the most skilled with the fastest piece of metal! This summer on the Hi-Line and in central Montana, motor heads, professional and amateur drivers and fans have been preparing for some impressive entertainment. These events give us all that night of entertainment we’ve been looking for, and on the side they promote local businesses. The “Bump and Runs” are running from June to September throughout north central Montana. This concept evolved in Roundup, MT. The next race is August 14th, followed by the Montana State Championship Race on the 15th. With Lewistown Raceway’s 50 years of racing history, it might be fun to pack up the family, visit Lewistown and check out the “only race like it in Montana this year”. The Secret to Longevity Grandpa was celebrating his 100th birthday and everybody complimented him on how athletic and well-preserved he appeared. “Gentlemen, I will tell you the secret of my success, he cackled. “I have been in the open air day after day for some 75 years now.” The celebrants were impressed and asked how he managed to keep up his rigorous fitness regime. “Well, you see my wife and I were married 75 years ago. FROM THE MARKETING TOOLBOX:
by Tricia Kimmel
Where’s Your Fortune?
In my mind there are multiple categories of “small business” in the world. To begin with, there are those that are strictly retail driven, whether online or storefront, the kind where folks come straight to you and buy a product from you. Think groceries, mass merchandising, music media. Much of the time, individuals who buy at this type of store are price shopping or convenience shopping. They buy there ‘cause they happen to be at that spot at that very moment, they’re looking for something pretty specific and it’s easy for them. Then there’s the kind of business where you have to actually SELL to your customer. And, trust me, not everyone is a natural salesman. If you are in any type of long-term service business, or what you sell involves a large cash outlay, you’re going to have to convince your potential client or customer that they are making the right purchase for their needs. No matter how good your marketing is, if it doesn’t include some one-on-one with your customer, you’re losing sale after sale and you may not even know it. The catch is, in this type of business it can take several conversations GO ONLINE TODAY for your prospect to decide if doing subscribe to our business with you is a good decision for FREEand marketing e-newsletter at him, and actually make a purchase. But www.Kimmel-Kreations.com. there is a simple trick to help close the Get useful tips like the ones in “Marketing Toolbox” plus more sale more often. great ideas every week! A common saying in sales goes, “The fortune is in the followup.” And the best place to implement that strategy is with your Low Hanging Fruit that we talked about last issue. (If you missed that article, it’s available on our website at www. kimmel-kreations.com.) Starting right now, start a list of your Low Hanging Fruit. These are individuals who’ve indicated they want to do business with you, but for whatever reason have not turned into a client yet; most often these folks have been referred by a very happy client of yours. Keep this list on your desk at all times. It should include columns for 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Name Phone Number Email Referral Source Their biggest need or concern Status and when to contact them next.
Go through your Rolodex, sticky notes, past client lists, your mental list and try to recall everyone in the last year who’s said they’d like to work with you. It should also include the folks who’ve said “no for now”. And get to calling them. This list will be a living, evolving document that will be invaluable to your success in closing more sales. Of course, you’ll want to implement a good strategy for closing a sale, which we will touch on in future articles. But don’t wait until then. You should already have a good idea of what your prospect needs, but if you don’t know, ask. Listen to what they tell you, then show how you can fill that need for them. With a good system like this for following up with leads, you’re sure to discover your fortune. Are you unsure of how to market your business? Do you run out of time to market because you’re too busy running your business? Kimmel Kreations, LLC offers customized “Marketing Modules” to lead you through the marketing maze. We are the solution you need. 406.379.2377
