COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

A Command Performance

Her vocals came out mighty hoarse Her sound was downright ill It didn’t slow her rapid tongue Inquiries, she did fill.

“You’ve heard the dreadful noise No, it isn’t gas I’m giving it a day or two Then it will surely pass”.

“I developed this condition It’s from the show last night The audience was seated They turned down the light”.

“I’m getting to the story. A man was filled with rage. I’m visiting with Betty. The speaker’s on the stage”.

She commenced the story Then up popped a question Her stomach made a frightful sound It’s intermittent indigestion.

“This man was truly hateful He said, just cease the talk He said, just shut your mouth He said, just take a walk”.

It induces recollection It’s blowing bubbles in a pond Gamblers would have placed a bet Which end would then respond?

“Betty asked a question He tapped me on the shoulder He said, close your flippin’ trap This man was getting bolder”.

“I’m treating this with mineral oil A lozenge soothes my throat It’s called self medication I just want you all to note”.

“Now, you hear my stomach churning No, it isn’t bloat My little cell phone rang He crammed it down my throat.” Tricia’s Trader , © 2010 Fred Liese

On behalf of all of the performers at the recent Montana Cowboy Poetry Gathering, I would like to extend a special thank-you to Ruth Hendersen of Lewistown for her kind and generous contribution. Today’s job market is more transitory than ever. And, as more and more individuals switch jobs, they begin to wonder what they should do with the money they have accumulated in their employer-sponsored retirement plans such as their 401(k) plans. The good news for 401(k) plan participants is that your retirement plan assets are very portable so you may be able to keep your existing 401(k) plan assets in a tax-deferred environment. The trick is to resist the urge to use the monies. After tucking money away in your 401(k) for quite some time, you may be tempted to use it to treat yourself to a new car or some other indulgence. Because it could literally take years to replace your existing 401(k) funds, you should think carefully before prematurely taking money from your retirement savings. A hasty withdrawal decision by someone under age 55 could easily wipe out a third of your 401(k) assets. If you decide you want a lump-sum withdrawal paid directly to you, the 401(k) plan trustee must withhold 20% for federal income tax and, if you do not attain age 55 prior to the end of the year in which you separate from service, the trustee must also withhold an additional 10% premature distribution penalty. So you will receive a net payout of 70 to 80% of your existing 401(k) plan account balance. After age 55, however, the premature distribution penalty is no longer imposed if your withdrawal is prompted by your separation from service with the employer sponsoring the plan. Of course, if you choose to take a withdrawal, you may, within 60 days of the distribution, subsequently decide to deposit it into an IRA as a qualified rollover. However, for the withdrawal and re-contribution to be a tax neutral event, you would need to deposit the gross distribution amount into the IRA, which means you need to replace the withheld monies with funds from another resource such as your personal savings. If you can resist the urge to take a withdrawal when you change jobs, you are one step closer to making a distribution decision that will preserve your hard-earned money. To be in the best position to make an informed decision, you should consider other options available for your existing 401(k) assets, such as: • leave your assets in the 401(k) plan, • transfer your assets to a new employer’s 401(k) or retirement plan, or • roll your assets into an IRA. Leaving your assets in the 401(k) plan may not be your best option. It depends on your existing 401(k) plan’s provisions. Some plans have limited investment options for employees who have separated from service and some have restrictive distribution options. However, most plans do allow employees who separate from service to roll their 401(k) assets to a new employer’s 401(k) plan, or retirement plan, or to roll to an IRA. Transferring your existing 401(k) assets to a new employer’s plan may be an option. To do so, you must first meet the eligibility requirements of your new employer’s plan. Additionally, the trustee on the new plan must agree to accept your assets, which may be a concern, especially if your existing 401(k) assets include shares of employer stock. Information on other considerations involved in transferring your existing 401(k) assets to your new employer’s 401(k) plan is available from your new employer. A direct transfer to an IRA avoids the mandatory withholding of the 20% for income tax and the 10% for the premature distribution penalty, if applicable. Your 401(k) plan trustee may simply transfer your plan assets electronically or may cut a check payable to your IRA. Once in your IRA, the assets continue to accumulate taxdeferred. One of the more attractive aspects to rolling your existing 401(k) into an IRA is your control feature. Not only do you have more control over your investment options; but, you will also have more control over the timing and manner of your distributions. Your 401(k) plan account balance represents your savings; therefore, it is important to make informed distribution decisions that will preserve your hard-earned money. To learn more about the portability of your 401(k) assets, or for more information on preserving your 401(k) assets and 401(k) retirement planning strategies based on your particular situation, please contact a Financial Advisor for a complimentary consultation. A mini guide to animal health

- by Dr. Roger Baxter

Dear Readers, For this issue’s Animal Academics article, I’d like to share with you another article that I find very thought-provoking. The topic is very much in line with our recent informative meeting held at the Cleveland Lodge. I hope you enjoy reading it! ~Dr. B

The book says the fundamental problem with America’s eating ventional wisdom of the 1960s, Taubes says. America’s medical eshabits is not the dietary fat in your cheeseburger. The problem is the tablishment inherited a paradigm — a way of thinking about obesity refined carbohydrates — like the flour in the bun, the starchy french — that seems to be commonsense and indisputable. They’ve never fries on the side, and the high-fructose corn syrup in the soft drink. questioned it and see no reason to test its validity. About the book “Good Calories, Bad Calories” stems from “What if It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie?” — a highly controversial article Taubes wrote for New York Times magazine in July 2002. The aim was to research what could be causing the obesity epidemic, and the article triggered an uproar. It accuses the American medical establishment of basing its dietary recommendations on bad science. “We tend to think of science evolving through this process of hypotheses and tests, and then the things that get accepted are things that were rigorously tested over the years,” Taubes says. “None of that happened in obesity research.” An award-winning science journalist and a contributing correspondent for Science magazine, Taubes specializes in science controversies and says he recognizes bad science like an English teacher recognizes bad writing. While he isn’t a medical doctor or nutritionist, Taubes has a solid background in science. He studied applied physics at Harvard and aerospace engineering at Stanford before earning his master’s degree in journalism at Columbia University. For the book, Taubes interviewed more than 600 clinicians, investigators and administrators. “I went back through all of the research since the 19th century to see if what they were telling me was supported by the science,” he says. “Often it wasn’t. It’s that simple.” Taubes says he found the quality of research on nutrition, obesity and chronic disease very inadequate and much of the conventional wisdom about nutrition to be founded on insubstantial evidence. Carbs vs. fat Surprisingly, the conventional wisdom that a low-fat diet is a healthy diet has only been accepted for about 30 years, Taubes explains. Up until the 1960s, the accepted wisdom was that carbohydrates make you fat and — what’s more — that fat and protein protect against overeating by making you sated. “Carbohydrates literally keep you hungry, whereas fat and protein do not,” he says. And the scientific evidence supports this hypothesis. In the late 1950s and mid 1960s, biochemists and other researchers figured out that the hormone insulin regulates fat and

This inheritance was largely the work of six men who dominated obesity research in the 1970s. These men, convinced that overeating causes obesity, hosted all the conferences, wrote the proceedings and then authored the textbooks on obesity. “They decided what the science was, and they came up with this idea that the physiological, biochemical regulation of fat tissue is irrelevant to why we get fat,” Taubes says. By addressing obesity as a problem of overeating, they put the problem in the brain. It is as if to say, “You eat too much because you just can’t help yourself. If you ate less, you’d be thinner.” This meaningless concept, he says, is a misinterpretation of the laws of thermodynamics. What’s more, at least two of the six leading researchers knew Robert Atkins, the physician and cardiologist best known for the popular low-carbohydrate, high-protein Atkins diet. They thought Atkins’ high-fat diet would give people heart attacks, and thus didn’t actually care if it was the only functional way to lose weight. In their minds, Atkins was going to kill people by telling them to eat cheeseburgers and other foods loaded with saturated fat. So, to diffuse the Atkins phenomenon, these men threw out the science. “They wanted to get rid of Atkins — the bath water — so they threw out the baby with him, which was the science that says: Carbohydrates make you fat. If you don’t eat carbohydrates, you won’t be fat,” Taubes says. Since Taubes started his research, the results of more than half a dozen clinical trials of the Atkins diet have been published. Virtually all show people on the Atkins diet not only lose weight but improve their cholesterol profiles. The gist of the Atkins diet is to avoid starchy vegetables and sweets and don’t shy away from dietary fat. Eat eggs, meat, chicken and fish, and supplement those with green leafy vegetables, cheese or nuts. Taubes says it’s hard to imagine how this can be unhealthy because the carbohydrates you avoid don’t bring many vitamins or minerals into the diet anyway. Nutritionists respond The idea that consuming too many low-quality carbohy-

that’s never been refuted, Taubes says. Even so, he’s typically met with blank stares when he lectures to obesity researchers. “Often, I’ll get the comment, ‘It just can’t be that simple.’ I’ll say, ‘No, actually it can be that simple. The way science works is you’re supposed to be able to refute the simple hypothesis,’ ” he says. “Only if you can refute the simple hypothesis can you then start complicating it in order to explain whatever it is you are studying.” One nutritionist from New York University told Taubes it may take a lifetime to get people to accept what he’s saying. Shalene McNeill, executive director of human nutrition research for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, says Taubes’ proposition is important. “His evaluation and deeper review of the scientific evidence certainly calls into question some long-standing ideas,” she says. “It’s a good scientific exercise.” But McNeill says there’s not one simple prescription for curbing today’s obesity epidemic. And because the book challenges conventional wisdom, most nutritionists regard it with at least some skepticism. “Most want more evidence,” she says. “But there’s a lot of merit to the book, and it has prompted a tremendous amount of research.” The book, she says, goes right along with the latest research in rediscovering the importance and benefits of protein in the diet. Beef is the number-one source of dietary protein. Right now, many nutritionists are debating whether a calorie is a calorie. She says high-protein diets can decrease appetite, reduce calorie intake and help you maintain a lean body mass. The body of scientific evidence supporting protein’s beneficial role in weight management is growing. The science is there, McNeill says, and the beef industry is now able to leverage it to influential leaders in the nutrition community. “This is exciting news for beef consumers,” she says, “because they can incorporate more beef back into their diets.” An urgent appeal Taubes often speaks to clinicians, nurse practitioners and obesity researchers about his findings. Earlier this spring, Taubes presented to the National Institutes of Health’s Nutrition Coordinating Committee, trying to convince the group that his hypothesis must be taken seriously. “We have this obesity epidemic and the diabetes epidemic, and they are predicted to overwhelm the health care system,” he says. He notes that obesity increases the risk of getting diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and other chronic diseases of civilization. “Whatever is making us fat is also making us sick,” he says. And Taubes’ urgent appeal to those leading the nutrition establishment is to question their own beliefs. “Obviously,” he says, “what they have been telling us hasn’t worked.” What’s next? Besides lecturing, Taubes is working on an easier-to-read book, which he refers to jokingly as “Good Calories, Bad Calories Lite.” The actual working title is “Why We Get Fat.” “I want it to be something that everyone can read so they really understand how the science works,” he says. He intends to explain why some people gain weight and their friends don’t, and why some gain weight as they age or when they get pregnant or when they drink beer. “I want to directly challenge the belief that it’s all about this meaningless concept of overeating,” he says.

30th Celebration of

Havre Festival Fun Summer went by too fast and that should be recorded somewhere! As we get closer and closer to frosty mornings and the changing colors of fall, there is no reason we can’t still have a good time! On that note, I hope you’ll join friends and neighbors in Havre the third weekend in September. For the last thirty years, those living in Havre and the surrounding area have put together parade floats, put on their running shoes and softball mitts and celebrated the annual Havre Festival Days. It’s a time for families to get together and enjoy one last “hurrah” after the completion of harvest. Traditionally, the Festival Days brings folks to Havre from far and wide. Among the events this year are the Kiwanis Pancake breakfast, the 48 hour softball tournament, book sales, and rodeos!

Friday: Kicking things off on Friday morning, the “Friends of the Library” will be holding an all day book sale. This will be held in the Library meeting room and will feature a wide variety of reading material. The Hi-Line and Quilt Guild “Festival of Quilts” will be on display from 12:00-6:00 at the Holiday Village Mall and should be a first-rate quilt admiring experience. Finish up the day with MSUNorthern’s college rodeo at the Great Northern Fairgrounds starting at 6:00. And Friday also marks the kick-off of the 48 hour Softball Tournament held at the field on 6th Avenue beginning Friday evening at 6:00 P.M. To be a part of the softball tourney, call Kristin at 406265-3076. If you find yourself in Hill County for any of the events, take a jaunt around town to see what our local crafters and quilters have been working on, and dig through the books. Saturday: While the softball tournament is in full swing on Saturday morning, the Kiwanis club will be serving up pancakes from 7:00 till noon. The Town Square area will be hosting the S.A.T.U.D.A.Y.

Market from 8:00 till noon. This will be the last “farmer’s market” in Havre this fall and an opportunity to obtain some local produce, baked goods and crafts. Take a break from the browsing at 10:00 to watch the parade! I understand there is a pet and doll parade included in this year’s parade lineup, so don’t miss it! The quilt show will be available for viewers at the Holiday Village Mall during business hours and at 11:00 the Commercial Products and Craft Show will be kicking off from 11:00 to 6:00 at the fairgrounds. St. Jude’s Parish will be the spot to have pie a la mode from 12:00-2:00; once you’ve had your sweets, stop by the book sale in the library, open till 5:00. Saturday night events include the Ag Appreciation Banquet in the Havre Ice Dome, and there’s even a dance for the teenagers at the Boys and Girls Club beginning at 8:00. Sunday: Sunday morning cheer on your favorite team at the on-going softball tournament. Or fit in some Polka action at the Reformation Polka Fest to be held at the First Lutheran Church. The college teams will provide more rodeo action at the fairgrounds at 10am, and, while you’re at the fairgrounds, make a second trip through the Commercial Products and Craft Show as well. Then get your soap box ready! The Jaycees Soapbox Derby registration happens from 11:30-1:00 with racing action at 1:00 on Hospital Hill. Or get your heart pumping in a different manner--at 1:00 runners will be tightening their laces and taking off on the 1 mile or 5k treks. Rather cool off instead? Head over to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church lawn for ice cream and Croquet Tournament action, which begins at 1:00. The quilt show and book sales will be wrapping up at 4:00 so be sure to get in and admire the stitches and find a few books to tide you over for the winter months ahead. Mosey back to the grandstands again at 3:00 for the E1 Towing Derby. Come to Havre this third weekend in September and enjoy some fantastic fall weather! Spend a couple nights if you feel like it—there are camping facilities and overnight lodging throughout Havre. The Havre Festival Days are all about family friendly fun, small town atmosphere and having plenty to do. Don’t forget to pick up a North Central Shrine Club Beef Raffle ticket while you are out and about! To enter something, or for more information, contact the Havre Chamber of Commerce at chamber@havremt.net for more information. Also, check out htpp://www.havremt.com/events/ festivaldays/hfd.htm for more information on specific events, entry forms and anything else you might be wondering about!

Brewery Death Old Man O’Malley had worked down at the brewery for years, but one day he just wasn’t paying attention and he tripped on the walkway and fell over into the beer vat and drowned. The foreman thought it should be his job to inform the widow O’Malley of her old man’s death. He showed up at the front door and rang the bell. When she came to the door, he said, “I’m sorry to tell you, but your poor husband passed away at work today when he fell into the vat and drowned.” She wept and covered her face with her apron. After a time, between sobs, she asked, “Tell me, did he suffer?” “Knowing Brian O’Malley as well as I did, I don’t think so,” said the foreman. “He got out three times to go to the men’s room.”

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58

We hope you enjoy reading this newest feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but you will always have something to discuss over dinner.

Shiny Objects

“Unbelievable,” I mumbled to myself as I stood reading the historical marker in the breaking twilight. “If you always do what you always did you’ll always get what you always got, and we’re about to do it again.” It was a Thursday morning in late July. My trophy wife and I had overnighted in Great Falls with the grandkids and we hit the road well before dawn. I pulled off Highway 89 at the “Old Agency” historical marker on Badger Creek to stretch my legs. The weathered sign explained a tragedy which occurred 127 years ago in Blackfeet Country. The peeling white paint in the engraved letters read: “…The ‘Starvation Winter’ of 1883-1884 took the lives of about 500 Blackfeet Indians…This tragic event was the result of an inadequate supply of government rations during an exceptionally hard winter. …” The marker’s words are frighteningly prophetic. The Blackfeet were the largest and most dominant Indian tribe in Montana in the mid 1800’s. The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 established their boundaries, but they never fully submitted to the reservation system until 1882. Two years later, 500 of them starved to death. Don’t you find it ironic a native population which survived hundreds of harsh Montana winters and struck fear in the hearts of their enemies didn’t suffer mass starvation until they surrendered their self-reliance? They fell victim to the deceptive promise from the federal government it was in their best interest to trade liberty for the security of free food, clothing, shelter and healthcare. I am certain there were Blackfeet patriots who frantically, albeit futilely, urged tribal members not to surrender to the federal government and instead cache their own winter food supply as their ancestors had done. Unfortunately, just like today, those pleas fell on the deaf ears of people blindly mesmerized by the shiny object of getting something for nothing. Last week, the US House was called back into session to pass, yet again, another stimulus bill. The $26 billion bailout is being promoted as an education jobs bill, but it is nothing more than a progressive vote buying gimmick for the 2010 elections. What makes this political move so analogous to the story on the road side marker is $12 billion of this giveaway comes directly from the federal food stamps program. Unlike in 1884, the greatest health threat to America’s poverty class is obesity, so I don’t think mass starvation is on the immediate horizon. Healthcare is the commodity which will be rationed due to a short supply and it is the obligation of the states to nullify Obamacare. In just 68 days voters go to the polls. Will Americans elect constitutional representatives and reject this cancerous, incessant, federal deficit spending or is the allure of social freebies like Obamacare too tempting to refuse? What say you? Read more of Krayton’s op-ed in his 350 page book, Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor - a collection of published and unpublished articles written about the life of a cowboy as it pertains to America’s freedom.
