COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

For Sale: The ad was posted on the wall There his eye, it caught It’s stuck upon the message board They hope it will be bought.

He waited until daylight He fought a cold chill He would ask the seller What’s spattered on the grille?

The poster, it’s a nauseous green It’s wrote in felt tip pen Their vehicle, it’s well described “Call from six ‘til ten!”

Had it been reported? Did insurance pay a claim? Was it on the news? Could they provide a name?

It’s stated on the notice It caused him great concern Here’s truth in advertising It made his stomach churn.

He quickly made connection It’s a lady, filled with charm He asked about her truck He may buy it for his farm.

The poster caused him great alarm It dealt a sleepless night This vision jammed within his mind It was a grisly sight.

She provided information To sell was her desire She threw out all the data He would now inquire.

Perhaps it was an ornament A person could detach Is it quirky advertising? Is it for the eye to catch?

She promptly reassured him It’s not some reckless stunt There’s an error in the spelling There’s no wench upon the front.

Many people hear the word probate and immediately think of negative connotations. However, the decision to purposely avoid probate has become more complex in recent years due to the establishment of a Uniform Probate Code and there are many factors, some positive and some negative, to consider when deciding whether to structure your estate to entirely avoid probate. Probate has come to mean the entire court process by which the state supervises the orderly distribution of a decedent’s probate property. Many people choose to avoid the drawbacks of probate through the use of joint tenancy or a living trust. Let’s look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of the probate process. One benefit of probate is court supervision which can promote fairness through the process. Judges and official clerks are called on to approve major estate activities. Probate also allows for an orderly administration of assets (important for the large number of people who die without a will) and greater protection from creditors. Probate procedures typically require creditors to formally file their claims against probate assets within a certain period of time, such as four months from date of issuance of letters testamentary. Failure to timely file a creditor’s claim can forever bar collection from those assets. There are several drawbacks to probate that must be carefully considered. First, probate can be a complex process requiring petitions, accountings, hearings, and other complicated legal procedures. Most people do not understand their purpose or their operation, and are forced to hire specialists to meet their requirements. The cost of legal supervision under probate can be high. Studies have found that total probate administration expenses range between about 2 and 10% of gross estate assets. These expenses include personal representatives’ fees and attorneys’ fees. However, contrary to popular belief, probate does not increase estate taxes. Next, as most of us have heard, probate entails a lack of privacy. Probate is a public process and all probate proceedings are subject to public scrutiny. This is a major concern for many people who wish to keep their affairs private. And lastly, even for smaller estates, probate administration takes considerable time, ranging from nine months to several years before final distribution is made. However, you should know that there has been a trend in recent years for states to use the Uniform Probate Code (UPC). If you live in a state using the UPC, your probate costs and time delays may be significantly reduced. Of course, this brief article is no substitute for a careful consideration of how to best structure your estate with an experienced estate planning attorney and your financial planner. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by Greg Dugdale, Branch Manager of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC.

A mini guide to animal health

- by Dr. Roger Baxter

Better technology = More Pounds of Beef Produced This was the theme of the Beef Producer Meeting held at Cleveland Aug 31. Eighty plus producers were present to hear a presentation given by Dr. Gary Sides sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health. I concur with his message about technology. Studies on implanting calves prove that the hormone increase is minimal and condusive to human consumption. Springtime deworming (injectable preferred for internal parasites) makes sense, then pour in the fall. Cows need to be on mineral all year long however mineral is not all created the same. Any mineral with copper oxide or zinc oxide is NOT bioavailable to the animal. Copper sulphate and zinc sulphate are bioavailable ingredients. Protein supplementation is beneficial but not all protein sources are equally utilized (ie urea when cattle are on forage). In defense of the product we produce we need to promote the nutritional value of beef to the public. It is an excellent source of protein and provides the right kind of cholesterol and nutrition that we need. I am proud to be part of the beef industry.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:

by Emily Bolles

Ponderings Of The Bear’s Paw The Bear’s Paw Battlefield is said to be one of the best preserved military battlefields in the United States. After traveling about 1,200 miles in about four months’ time in a desperate attempt to escape the U.S. military, the Nez Perce Indians led by Chief Joseph had made it to within 40 miles of the Canadian border when they were engaged in their final battle by a surprise attack by Col. Miles in the early morning hours of September 30, 1877. The five day fray ended in a speech credited to Chief Joseph, whose famous lines “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever echo in history yet today. The Nez Perce Indians, long famous for their spotted Appaloosa horses, had reached the end of their flight, and the battle ended what was considered the last of the Plains Indian conflicts. Annual Meeting to Take Place at Chinook History buffs and explorers alike, take a walk through the Bear’s Paw Battlefield this fall, as the Nez Perce Trail Foundation will be holding their annual meeting there October 1-3 in commemoration of Chief Joseph’s surrender on October 5, 1877. Each year the Nez Perce Trail Foundation meets at a location somewhere along the Nez Perce Trail. Celebrating history, learning, sharing and preserving heritage are key foundational elements of this group. If you are interested in learning more about the efforts of the Nez Perce Trail Foundation, see the website at www.nezpercetrail.net where you can also choose to join the foundation or take part in the activities. You’ll find registration forms, donation information and contact information available online.

This year’s event kicks off on Friday with the yearly membership meeting and board of directors meetings led by Executive Director, Jim Evans. In attendance at this year’s Annual Meeting will be representatives of the Nez Perce tribe, and Foundation board members. Additionally, Congressional Delegates and Blaine County supporters of the battlefield will be there to hear comments on a proposed onsite Visitor’s Center at the Bear’s Paw Battlefield. That evening is a social at 6:30, followed by a community appreciation banquet at 7pm at the Chinook Motor Inn. There is no cost to attend the banquet, as

Keynote speaker this year is Jerome Green, author of Beyond Bear’s Paw, a book focused on the aftermath of the individuals who not only survived the months of travel and military conflict, but made it to Canada. Reviews on this book suggest that it is a valuable source of information and it comes with hearty recommendation. A former research historian for the national parks, Mr. Green will on this book suggest that it is a valuable source of information and it comes with hearty recommendation. A former research historian for the national parks, Mr. Green wilbe available to sign books. Saturday from 10-2 a memorial service is scheduled at the battlefield site with a free meal afterward for those attending. Not all of the Nez Perce Indians with Chief Joseph yielded to American army troops in 1877. During and following the Battle of the Bear’s Paw Mountains, September 30-October 5, more than 200 Nez Perce men, women, and children managed to flee the camp attacked by Colonel Nelson A. Miles and make their way north some forty miles to cross the border into the British Possessions. So, on Sunday, October 3rd, Foundation members and interested parties will board busses to Fort Walsh in Alberta, Canada to complete their journey where the fleeing Nez Perce led by Chief White Bird found refuge alongside Sitting Bull and his Sioux. If you’d like to make this trip, again visit www.nezpercetrail.net to reserve your spot. Historic Site of “The Battle of the Bear’s Paw” When visiting Chinook, swing over to the Blaine County Museum for a tour of artifacts and to watch the video “40 Miles to Freedom”, which is a documentary of the events leading up to that final surrender. Then head south out to the battlefield and take the 1.25 mile self-guided hike. It’s a good way to stretch your legs and take a closer look at the layout. Full maps of the entire trail, beginning in Wallowa, Oregon and ending in Chinook, Montana are available through the National Forest Service, and can be ordered online. Jesus vs. Satan Jesus and Satan were having an argument about who was better on the computer. They had been going at it for days, and frankly God was tired of hearing all the bickering. Finally fed up, God said, “THAT’S IT! I have had enough. I am going to set up a test that will run for two hours and from those results, I will judge who does the better job.” Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away. They moused. They faxed. They e-mailed. They e-mailed with attachments. They downloaded. They did spreadsheats. They wrote reports. They created labels and cards. They created charts and graphs. They did some genealogy reports. They did every job known to man. Jesus worked with heavely effieciency, and Satan was very fast. Then, 10 minutes before their time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, rain poured, and, of course, the power went off. Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus just sighed. Finally the electricity came back on, and they both restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically, screaming: “It’s gone! It’s all GONE! I lost everything when the power went out!” Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of his files from the past two hours of work. Satan observed this and became irate. “Wait!” he screamed. “That’s not fair! He cheated! How come he has all his work and I don’t have any?! God just shrugged and said, “Jesus saves.”

Chinook businesses are being asked to participate in the Sugarbeeter Business Race in recognition of this year’s Festival theme: “Chinook Businesses – Past, Present and Future.” The Chinook Area Chamber of Commerce is asking all businesses within the city limits to gather items associated with their businesses to give away as door prizes on Saturday, Sept. 25. Appropriate items could include: imprinted pens, hats, key chains, business cards, letter openers, gift certificates, or anything they think would be a fitting gesture. Business owners also are asked to gather old photographs of their businesses, including initial start up photos of the company, whether they’ve been in business for 50 years or two years. The Chamber asks that the photographs be pasted on a poster board – not necessarily anything fancy – and displayed outside the business during the Festival. Poster board is available at the Blaine County Journal in Chinook. Businesses that will not be open that Saturday can bring their posters to the Pastime Lounge to be displayed or open their doors from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Chamber has created a challenge for people to gather one item from every business in town during the festival, and the person who collects all the items from businesses within the city limits of Chinook will receive a hefty $150, $75 or $50 cash prize. Businesses can sign up by contacting Nancy Diemert at 357-3633 or e-mailing info@chinookmontana.com. The Sugarbeeter Business Race is sponsored by Jamieson Motors and Chinook Pharmacy and Triangle Telephone. GET READY, CHINOOK, FOR A MUDDY TUG-O-WAR The Sugarbeet Festival has come up with an entirely new event this year – the Muddy Tug-O-War – at the intersection of Main Street and Fourth Street at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. The co-ed competition will begin with the blow of a whistle and the first person to step inside a pool of mud is the loser.

The competition will be divided into two age groups – 12-17 and 18-and-over – with a limit of eight four-person teams per age group. All team members must be in the same age group. The entry per team is $10 and the winning team in each age group will walk away clean with $50 for its efforts. For more information, go to www.chinookmontana.com or call Heather DePriest at 357-2394 to sign up a team. Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58

We hope you enjoy reading this newest feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but you will always have something to discuss over dinner.

What Would Tim Do?

I was unable to attend Glen Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally in Washington D.C., but I know readers of my column who did. I anxiously await their first hand accounts. Our nation was established by divine providence, and she is on the verge of a spiritual awakening. Progressives will try to snuff this movement because anything which rightfully glorifies God similarly lessens the importance of government. To the left, all worship is to be directed to the Department of Happiness in Washington D.C., but while collectivists were busy drugging the masses with freebies, the once-quiet majority has come alive. Faith, hope and charity, the themes of Beck’s rally, are an enigma to progressives. It is charity which confuses them most because they feel most charitable when they reach into your wallet and redistribute your money to anyone they feel is in greater need. Progressives gained control of Congress in 2006 and because their charitable mood quickly exhausted your money, they became charitable with the future earnings of your grandchildren. The national debt was $8.2 trillion in 2006 and is $13.3 trillion today. Since progressives just don’t understand true charity, let me explain it as demonstrated by the actions of a friend of mine named Tim. I’ve mentioned Tim before and in real life he is a John Deere representative. He grew up a Christian farm boy in Missouri and he epitomizes the values found in each of the one million patriots standing around the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday. A while back, Tim was on a sales call in Culbertson, Montana. He had just finished lunch and was walking down the sidewalk when he spotted a $50 bill in the gutter. (Apparently the energy economy in eastern Montana is so robust fifty dollar bills blow around like the infamous tumbleweeds in old western movies.) He picked it up and guess what he did? Tim hunted up the address of the Culbertson Methodist Church and mailed the fifty to them. That is charity, first fruits and tithing all rolled together and because America is filled with millions of people like Tim, she will survive. Last Thursday I spoke at the Rosebud County Tea Party Patriots meeting in Forsyth. It was my 15th Tea Party of the year. You cannot comprehend the boost I feel when I stand before a room of patriots uniting to restore our country. At every rally there are people from every walk of life; from cowboy to carpenter, teacher to trophy wife and union laborer to small businessman. More than anything else, they want government to leave them alone. This drives progressives insane. “Don’t they understand our programs will help them?” They ponder amongst themselves. “With enough tax dollars we could collectively save everyone from poverty and sickness…of course less a small handling fee to cover administrative costs like executive green fees.” At our nation’s founding, John Adams warned us “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” For 80 years progressives have attempted to remove God as the controlling authority of our lives and He is banned from schools and many government buildings. They are wrong. Through divine providence we will once again be the shining light of liberty to the worlds’ oppressed. America’s restoration begins today, will you help us? Facing Facebook?

by Tricia Kimmel

Do you Facebook? This question could very well be the most pondered dilemma of distraught over-worked business owners of all time. There are definitely two clear sides of the fence on this topic— you either love it or hate it. There are those who embrace social media like Facebook with the eagerness of a young pup, and then there are those who view it as a complete and utter waste of time. But ponder this: in past history, a large percentage of Americans seem very happy to “waste time” and those time wasters have been infiltrated by marketing tactics for decades. Consider the good ole’ TV. Countless hours are spent by your potential customers in front of the television, and massive amounts of advertising dollars are funneled through that media. Because it works. Period. Facebook is even more viral than television, so GO ONLINE TODAY even if you’re one of those with the and subscribe to our mindset that there are better ways to FREE marketing e-newsletter at www.Kimmel-Kreations.com. spend your time, don’t discount the useful tips like the ones in fact that there is no better way to spend Get “Marketing Toolbox” plus more your money. great ideas every week! Consider these bits taken from an Oxygen Media Insights Group, Inc. study (http://www.rbr. com/media-news/research/25649.html) before you totally bypass the marketing gold mine offered by Facebook. “More than one third (39%) [of those who participatedinthestudy]areselfproclaimedFacebook addicts; 37% have fallen asleep with their PDA in their hands; 84% believe its okay to update your status more than once a day; and 78% think it’s okay to check someone else’s Facebook profile more than once a day; 19% say they have gotten into fights with loved ones about how much time they spend with their PDAs/cell phones and 31% feel more confident about their online persona than in their real lives.” Other facts to note from the study: • 34% women 18-34 say checking Facebook is the first thing they do when waking up in the morning • 26% women 18-34 get up in the middle of the night to read text messages • 37% women 18-34 have fallen asleep with their PDA in their hands This research reflects the habits of women age 18-34, but the other studies strongly indicate that about half of the younger population consider themselves to be “always on”. If you’ve ever wondered how to get your message out to folks, Facebook and social media sites like it are a great marketing vehicle. And if you happen to be a Facebook “newbie” who wants to learn the hows of Facebook rather than the whys, there’s a great article by Tawnya Starr at http:// quickprinting.com/print/Quick-Printing/Web-Marketing/1$13681. Are you unsure of how to market your business? Do you run out of time to market because you’re too busy running your business? Kimmel Kreations, LLC offers customized “Marketing Modules” to lead you through the marketing maze. We are the solution you need. 406.379.2377
