COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

Traveling … Part 2…With a Yankee Her voice mail was promptly sent. Will he attend this big event? “Call me back” was what it meant. Here is how the story went.

Now, small town news, it travels well. It came from postal personnel. Somehow, out, the story fell. How had the news escaped the shell?

He called her on the telephone. She would not drive there all alone. Carpooling plans from there had grown. Platonic friendship, it had shown.

That’s just the way that all news goes And with that, the story grows. A thankful note, they did suppose. He signed the note with X’s and O’s.

My rig, she said, has lots of space. They then arrange a meeting place. They’ll travel off at leisured pace. This invitation’s full of grace.

Word for word, these people quote This steamy message on the note. Here’s the oar for gossip boat Love and kisses, was what he wrote.

Saskatchewan, she left behind. Her Yankee friend, she soon, did find. Montana trails were on her mind. This traveling plan was well designed.

She seen it there, with great alarm The mail held there in her arm She recomposed and with her charm, She phoned him to address the harm…

They arrived there by the mid day sun. Here are two days of work and fun. Then when this weekend’s work was done, They journeyed back where they’d begun.

Or gossip news that was connived And through it all, she had survived. “The rumor mill is not deprived, … For now your post card has arrived”.

As this trip, it came to pass, He filled her tank back up with gas. His gratitude, it did amass. This gentleman then thanked the lass.

Money Talks

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana

REASSESSING YOUR RISK TOLERANCE The potential return from any investment can generally be linked to the amount of risk the investor is willing to assume. Finding that balance between the return you desire and the risk you can handle has never been easy. What makes this problem even trickier is that your financial goals - and thus your risk tolerance - inevitably change throughout your life. Therefore, the investment that was right for your goals of yesterday may not be so appropriate today. It is a good idea to review your investments periodically with risk tolerance in mind. If you heed the advice of your financial advisor, you probably already review your account statements on a regular basis to monitor performance and change any investments whose time has passed. Take some extra time when doing this to screen your investments for inappropriate levels of risk. Most people identify risk management with safety of principal. This is true to an extent - a dollar locked in a safety deposit box for 10 years will most likely be worth a dollar when it is taken out. Of course, that dollar is not likely to have as much purchasing power in 10 years as it does today. In other words, locking your money away exposes it to inflation risk. What you gained in stability, you lost in buying power. Like that dollar in the box, some investments are also exposed to inflation risk. There are many other types of risk as well, which apply to different securities. The following are some of the types of investment risk you should keep in mind. • Market risk - the possibility that an investment may lose its value when traded in the financial markets. • Credit risk - the possibility that the issuer of an investment (a corporate bond, for example) may not live up to its financial obligations and cause you to lose your invested capital or not receive expected interest payments. • Interest rate risk - the risk that, if interest rates rise, the price (value) of an investor’s bond holdings and certain stocks will decline. • Reinvestment risk - the possibility that interest rates will fall as a fixedincome investment matures and cause you to be unable to reinvest matured assets at an attractive rate of return. • Liquidity risk - the risk that you will be unable to liquidate an asset (such as real estate, collectibles or thinly traded stocks) when you want and at the price you want. While the variety of risks is substantial, you should not let risk management intimidate you. People participate in the financial markets because the rewards have often enough outweighed the risks. By carefully assessing all the risks an investment offers and periodically reviewing the holdings in your portfolio with your financial advisor in consideration with your risk tolerance, you should be able to find a level of risk that is appropriate for meeting your investment goals. Microchip Your Pet A microchip is a radio frequency implant that is a permanent form of identification. It is a simple procedure, similar to a routine shot- no anesthesia is required. The microchip is implanted beneath the surface of the pet’s skin between the shoulder blades and will not migrate. We use the scanner to check the pet’s registration code both before and after implanting. The pet’s owner completes a registration form while the procedure is being done. We send in the paperwork

and that information goes into the Home Again database. This is a one time fee for registration and owners can change contact information as often as needed during that pet’s lifetime. If a pet gets lost or stolen a shelter or veterinarian will scan the microchip to read its ID code which is used to contact the owner. Call for more information or an appointment to get your pet microchipped at Blaine County Veterinary Service. ~Dr B.

The Motor Home A blond goes into a coffee shop and notices there’s a ‘peel and win’ sticker on her coffee cup. So she peels it off and starts screaming, “I’ve won a motor home. I’ve won a motor home!” The waitress says, “That’s impossible. The biggest prize is a free lunch.” But the blond keeps on screaming, “I’ve won a motor home! I’ve won a motor home!” Finally, the manager comes over and says, “Ma’am, I’m sorry, but you’re mistaken. You couldn’t have possibly won a motor home because we didn’t have that as a prize.” The blonde says, “No, it’s not a mistake. Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58

We hope you enjoy reading this newest feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but you will always have something to discuss over dinner.

A Dying Breed and The Cause

On Monday the 18th I was honored to address my 19th tea party of this political season. Just like everywhere else, the crowd in Broadus yearns for The Cause; American freedom. I will never remember the names of everyone with whom I have shaken hands because inventorying 100 new faces in two hours are beyond my capability. However, it seems at each rally a wise, weathered and wrinkled patriot steps forward and says something which touches me so deeply I will carry their passion for liberty until the day God calls me home. In Broadus, it was John. John is 89 and one of the remaining few of a dying breed. He was seasoned during his years of service in World War II and likely has seen horrors few understand. I didn’t ask. John serves The Cause alone now as his trophy wife has resided in a nursing home for the last couple years. After I stepped from behind the rostrum, he gripped my hand, looked in my eyes and said “I am more scared for my country today than at anytime in my life.” He doubts he will live to see the day our great American republic regains its brilliance as the shining light of liberty to the world. He is probably right. As it took nearly a century to incrementally destroy freedom, it will take nearly as long to restore it. Yet, restore it we must! America has become a nation where a citizen of need is held in higher esteem than one of production; the greater your achievements the more evil you are portrayed. An entire political movement is powered by promising the populace gifts from the production class. When producers could no longer meet the demand for “things”, politicians began gifting from the labors of workers not yet born and rulers have promised13.3 trillion dollars more in gifts than they had in Santa’s bag. We must change this mindset. More frighteningly, history is being purposely rewritten to down play what it means to be an American. I have heard all the apologies I can stand. All the wondrous medical and scientific achievements which have relieved suffering around the world originated because God endowed America with the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. When you are an American, achievement has no limits and I am not sorry if that offends you. John, you are right. The great American restoration will not happen in your lifetime, but I pledge to you I will do everything I can to be certain it happens in mine. Attention patriots: It’s not over on Election Day. November 2nd is but one single skirmish in our war for The Cause. There are no failures in our War for Re-Independence, only results. Learn from them and carry on. If your community has a Tea Party, join it; if it doesn’t, then form one. The Cause was an idea argued in every colonial tavern in 1776 and one which must be re-argued today. This country was founded on sacrifice, if you don’t step forward, who will? Be the patriot who makes the difference. Call me; I will speak anywhere and any time for The Cause.

Ever heard of ‘entrepreneurial spirit’? I’d bet money you have, unless you’ve been living under a rock. You find the term used excessively in business magazines, best-selling books, seminars, even in politics and news programs. There’s even a magazine with the exact name, “Entrepreneur”. So, being we’ve just survived (again) our annual sugar-crash-landing called Halloween, let’s explore this topic of ‘spirits’. I believe ‘entrepreneurial spirit’ needs a new definition. In fact, I think it should actually be a trophy or certificate that you earn after making it through an intense course of fire-walking, nail-bed sleeping, and bamboo being shoved under your fingernails. If you successfully graduate from this “entrepreneur’s program”, then, and only then, do you get to go into business for yourself. All kidding aside, many so-called “entrepreneurs” will tell you they wished they’d been offered a course like this before they started out, because, knowing what they know now, they just may have changed their minds. Yes, only those with real, seething, hardcore “entrepreneurial spirit” actually make it and experience real success. But be aware, success always comes at a cost. Success is measured in many different ways, of course. So, in all fairness, we can’t really talk about success being purely financial. Taking some tips from one of history’s greatest marketing experts and entrepreneurs, James J. Hill (yup, our very own railroad guy) I’m going to give you a list of all the great things about being in business for yourself, just like Mr. Hill did in his railroad propaganda directed at those who dreamed of coming west to be farmers or sheep and cattle ranchers. Pay very close attention. And if you can, go take a look at that propaganda yourself. • First, you get to be your own boss! • Second, you get to do whatever you want, whenever you want to. • Third, you get rid of all that stress that comes from working for somebody else. • Lastly, you get the satisfaction of building something from the ground up. Now, get on the train, because you’re going for a ride. I’m going to start with the last one first, because I don’t want anyone thinking that starting a business is something I’m against, or that I don’t enjoy it myself. But I feel there’s isn’t enough real-world education out there for those who are considering it. The satisfaction of building something from the ground up. Have you ever heard the term GO ONLINE TODAY “bootstrapping”? I mean the literal kind, and subscribe to our where you pull yourself up from your own marketing e-newsletter at FREE boot straps? If you’re looking for a ground www.Kimmel-Kreations.com. based opportunity, there you have it. Get useful tips like the ones in Start there, and you’ll have a pretty good “Marketing Toolbox” plus more idea what you’re in for for the rest of your great ideas every week! entrepreneurial life. If you actually do end up standing after tugging and tugging on those boot straps, the feeling you get from it would be indescribable! You get rid of all that stress that comes from working for somebody else. Mmm hmm. Sure thing. And you take on a whole new level of stress that you wonder how anyone ever survives. Plus, if you’re lucky enough to need to hire help, you get to worry about those folks’ welfare all at the same time you’re busying being your own tech support, psychiatric manager, building maintenance and cleaning person, and customer care manager. You get to do whatever you want, whenever you want to. It’s been said that entrepreneurs are those independent spirits who can’t work for anybody else. It’s probably true, and it’s also true that you can do anything you want to if you own the place. Unless you want to be successful, that is. On a Friday night when the roof is falling in, who stays behind to prop it back up? You guessed it - you’re #1 on the list. You get to be your own boss. Yes, you certainly do. Except for all those hundreds or thousands of patrons that you talk to, email, Facebook, or just plain serve on an hourly basis, some of whom will never be happy enough with you. Slavery is not dead – it’s just been re-invented. Business owners are living proof. I say all of this in jest, yet with the utmost sincerity. It’s my hope that every potential business person weighs their options carefully before putting everything on the line for a business idea. As I said back in the third paragraph, there are some who experience phenomenal success, both financial and non-material, but they are the individuals who’ve given blood, sweat and tears to ensure their baby of a business grows up healthy and happy. And, I gotta tell ya, that feeling of standing up holding on to nothing but your own boot straps – yup, it’s indescribable. But “entrepreneurship” isn’t for the faint of heart, so if you’re considering giving it a whirl, make sure you have some pretty tough boot straps before you start. And if you still decide to jump in . . . welcome to the club, because you’ve just joined a very unique group of “spirits”. Are you unsure of how to market your business? Do you run out of time to market because you’re too busy running your business? Kimmel Kreations, LLC offers customized “Marketing Modules” to lead you through the marketing maze. We are the solution you need. 406.379.2377
