COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
Give Her Air Her hands have lost their nimble ways to grip her finest crystal.
She dreams about the bygone days when she cocked her favorite pistol. A gross mistake came on the scene when she commits an error. It put her into panic mode and left her there in terror. The intruder snapped right into place and then took full control. Adhering to the prisoner, she’s left without parole. Confinement, it was well defined and could this end her life? Lacking now in basic strength, she could not grip the knife. She wrestled now in anguish and with fear of losing hope. There she was more tightly bound than duct tape and a rope. It’s compressing tightly on her chest in a form of strangulation. Two lungs are fighting side by side in hyperventilation. Her heart is swiftly palpitating as she tries to catch her breath. She knew that lack of oxygen would be the cause of death. Despair is present in her mind, it’s more than aggravating. Assistance, she now greatly needs for fear of suffocating. Thrashing with the “tie that binds” just made a deeper hole. She’d surely view the angels when they came to call the roll. While she considered 911 to alert the men of law, A last ditch effort cast away her new athletic bra. Tricia’s Trader , © 2010 Fred Liese

LAST MINUTE TAX TIPS
Here’s a potpourri of rules and ideas that are important for yearend planning. Securities Sales To realize a gain or loss in 2010, the trade date must occur on or before December 31, 2010. Settlement date is irrelevant for publicly traded securities. The limit on the deduction of capital losses in excess of capital gains is $3,000. Any net capital losses in excess of $3,000 are carried over into 2011. Both short- and long-term losses are counted on a dollar-fordollar basis. A few years ago, long-term losses were worth only $.50 on the $1. No longer. The holding period to achieve a long-term capital gain or loss is now more than twelve months. Count the period from trade date to trade date. Whether a gain is short- or long-term does make a difference. The date a long-term gain is realized also makes a difference. In general, net short-term gains are subject to a 35% maximum rate, while net long-term gains are taxed at a maximum of 15%. However, some gains may be subject to a 25 or 28% rate, such as gains on the sale of art or collectibles and gains on certain depreciated real property. Retirement Plans If you are a calendar year taxpayer, the deadline for establishing a qualified retirement plan for deductions against 2010 income is December 31, 2010. The contribution need not be made until the tax filing deadline of the taxpayer’s return. Note; however, that a SEP plan can still be established for 2009 deductions up until the return due date in 2010. In order for a distribution to qualify as a lump sum distribution, 100% of the balance to the credit of the employee must be distributed in one taxable year. If you have retired this year, make sure that you received (or will receive by year-end) everything you have coming under your former employer’s qualified retirement plan. Charitable Contributions Many people make their annual charitable contributions during the holidays. If you’re going to make a cash contribution, mail the check by December 31, 2010 to qualify for a 2010 deduction. Giving a personal note or I.O.U. to the charity won’t qualify for a deduction; but, donating with a credit card does. Making gifts of securities is a very effective way to make charitable contributions. Charities are happy to receive odd lots. Donations of longterm capital gain property are deductible based on fair market value. It doesn’t make sense to donate short-term capital gain property; your deduction will be limited to your basis. Also, it doesn’t make sense to donate securities with losses; sell the stock and donate the cash. To claim a 2010 deduction, the security must actually be transferred to the charity before December 31, 2010. Check in with your financial planner near the end of the year to see what deadlines and opportunities apply to your particular financial situation. A nimAl AcAdemics
A mini guide to animal health
- by Dr. Roger Baxter Anal Sac Disease When a dog scoots himself across the floor chances are that it is not worms. They do it when their anal glands are uncomfortable and all dogs have them. Anal sacs are located between the internal and external anal muscles that allow the dog to keep stool in the rectum until it is time to pass. They store a secretion for territory marking in the anal sacs. In most cases the dog will squeeze the sphincter muscles and force the contents of the anal sacs on
the surface of the stool. If the contents of the anal sacs are not emptied on a regular basis the contents become thick and plug the openings of the anal sacs. Impacted glands cause discomfort or can abcess. I realize that anal glands are not something that pet owners talk about. However it is important to know when your pet may be having a problem. Early treatment is best! ~Dr B.

The 2nd Annual PPND Donation Drive begins November 26, 2010. From now thru Jan. 31st, 2011, we will be tracking the contributions made by those in our reading area. Let’s beat last year’s numbers!
1 of 1
Last year at this time, Tricia’s Trader ran a feature on PPND (Pallido-Pontal-Nigral-Degeneration), also called “Newell’s Syndrome” due to its being traced back to a pioneer to Montana in the early 20th century, Chet Newell. Newell’s descendants still reside all across northern Montana, and about half of them carry the deadly and debilitating gene that takes many lives in their late 40s and early 50s. To read the original story, visit triciastrader.com. 11/13/2010 10:27 AM
This holiday season, please take a moment to contribute to either of these charitable organizations who support research of PPND and similar neurological illnesses. PPND Research Account c/o Marla Phillips P.O. Box 11596 Glendale, AZ 85318

Swearing A preacher was making his rounds on a bicycle when he came upon a little boy trying to sell a lawn mower. “How much do you want for the mower?” asked the preacher. “I just want enough money to go out and buy me a bicycle,” said the little boy. After a moment of consideration, the preacher asked, “Will you take my bike in trade for it?” The little boy asked if he could try it out first, and, after riding the bike around a little while, said, “Mister, you’ve got yourself a deal.” The preacher took the mower and began to crank it. He pulled on the rope a few times with no reponse from the mower. The preacher called the little boy over and said, “I can’t get this mower to start.” The little boy said, “That’s because you have to cuss at it to get it started.” The preacher said, “I can’t cuss. It’s been so long since I became a Christian that I don’t even remember how to cuss.” The little boy looked at him happily and said, “You just keep pulling on that rope. It’ll come back to ya.” ~Thanks to Linda Hutton of Turner for sharing!

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor
by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58
We hope you enjoy reading this newest feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but you will always have something to discuss over dinner.
Certain Death in The Middle of the Road
One of the greatest thing about turning 50, something I did three years ago, is you no longer have to do things against your wishes. For example, when I go for an early morning run I insist on doing a loop, not an out and back. Even if the route is one I have run hundreds of times, a loop gives the illusion you are seeing new territory with each turn. The out and back is pure drudgery because you see everything twice; the rusted old mail box going out is the same rusted old mailbox coming back. Nothing changes. Last Thursday, due to a momentary lapse in judgment, I was forced to run the dreaded out and back. By nature I am just a congenial guy, and since no one else in my running group possesses my idiosyncratic aversion to out and backs, I tagged along without whining…okay a little whining. With our world illuminated by the triple-AAA batteries powering our headlamps, we ran three miles to the east and then pivoted for the three miles back to the beginning. (Using the word “pivoted” makes the run sound more exciting than it really was.) At the five mile mark, one mile from where we started, we hit the only highlight of the dreaded out and back. There right in the middle of the road, where minutes previously there was only bare pavement, laid the fresh remains of a road kill raccoon. Wow, how exciting to see something new. Seeing the carcass reminded me of politics; nothing good ever happens when politicians retreat to the misinterpreted safety in the middle of the road. When public servants abandon constitutional principles to join progressives, Marxist philosophy incrementally advances; it always has and it always will. There is right and there is wrong; there is no maybe. The recent election painted Montana like a political Red Sea. Republicans regained control of the House 68-32 and an astounding 31 newcomers rode the tea-party tsunami into Helena. This is a sweep beyond my wildest dreams. Now the political debate shifts to we elected officials as we select leadership controlling the 2011 legislature. Two factions are jockeying for position: The middle-of-the-roaders on the left and the conservative constitution caucus on the right. I have tossed my hat in the ring as a candidate for Speaker of the House to be part of a leadership team representing freedom loving conservatives. This isn’t going to be easy and I need your help. Our Declaration of Independence clearly states government only acts with the “consent of the governed.” Do not consent for capitulation! Now is the time for unrelenting, unmerciful, unyielding, uncompromising, unbearable pressure on all elected officials at every level, to honor their oath of office to “support, protect and defend the Constitution.” Grab the phone and be certain your elected public servant honors your wishes. If we default to the middle of the road, the republic becomes road kill.

The elections are settled, but one of the most dangerous threats to rural Montana and agriculture has already passed the House and is currently a “time bomb” sitting in the U.S. Senate. The Land and Water Conservation Fund (S. 3663) is a multi- billion dollar land acquisition slush fund to confiscate and convert private property to government control. The votes to control this dangerous legislation belong to Montana Senators Baucus and Tester. The only way to stop federal acquisition of taxpaying private property is not to provide tax dollars for this slush fund. What makes it so incredibly dangerous is that this fund has been structured outside of the Federal budget supporting the left-wing socialist environmentalists’ agenda to spend $5 Billion of our tax dollars each year for confiscation of tax-paying private property; or for reimbursing the East coast conservation groups currently purchasing Eastern Montana ranches for their buffalo/wolf “Prairie Park!” I can also report that Senator Max Baucus, during his Malta town hall meeting on October 29, stated adamantly and without reservations that he will block any Obama’s administration efforts to add more Monuments in Montana. One attendee produced a letter sent by Max in 2001 where he stated absolute opposition to Clinton establishing the Missouri River Monument. The Malta meeting attendee questioned if we could believe Max’s current pledge to oppose future monuments! I suggested that Max could add an amendment contingent for any legislation authorizing Federal acquisition of land requiring the land acquisition proposal being approved by the affected state legislature as required in Article I of the U.S. Constitution. The damage to Montana from Senate Bill 3663 is obvious, but what makes this potential land grab so irresponsible is that according to the Government Accountability Office, the U.S. Park Service and other Federal land agencies are more than ten billion dollars behind in basic health and safety deferred maintenance for current government land which the Federal government is responsible. We cannot allow tax dollars to be used to buy Montana land and take it off the tax rolls which support local schools and counties. The two key votes needed to block the current irresponsible legislation with its federal spending rests with Montana’s two Senators—Baucus and Tester. Montana voters can have tremendous influence on this legislation by calling upon their Senators to oppose Senate Bill 3663. Sen. Butcher has served on the Senate Finance Committee, House Taxation Committee, and Education Committee in both houses plus Chairman House Agriculture Committee during his ten years in the Legislature. A former College professor, Sen. Butcher is a Winifred Rancher, business consultant, and free lance writer.
