IF WE COULD ONLY BUY HIM OFF This here is just a pome to make apologies to Fred ‘Cause Loxi is upset with all the rhymy things I said And she is one to straighten out those misconceptions awful To guarantee her quotes are true, direct, exact and lawful. Now, when I said she said it’s good I bought some peace-of mind, She thought I ought to try a little hard to be kind. And when I said she said he owes, and won’t be comin’ back, She thought my sense of humor run a little bit off-track.. For, while “you’ll never see a bum who owes” is what she’s said, She didn’t mean, specifically, to say it about Fred. She tells me, “Be selective where you choose to grouse and carp; Four years now, and I still owe Fred...I bought his auto Harp!” Well, I have not had one good night of sleep since that dark day When I wrote up that pome and mailed the curs’ed thing away. And I would pay good money for a life at home less tense, Just think...I stirred up this whole hornet’s nest for fifty cents!

Here are some suggestions: stay balanced Build a well-diversified portfolio where different sectors will complement each other and may not always move in the same direction at the same time. It should comprise cash equivalents, bonds, equities, and real estate and tangibles. A Bat-Crap Crazy Look at Freedom

Montana’s 62nd legislative session is history and during my first week home I find myself reminiscing and shaking my head in disbelief; our great republic is dying and so few see it. No longer yearning to be free, today’s Americans demand security. The principles in our founding documents have been ignored, twisted and tarnished to the point where today’s patriots advocating the restoration of those principles are ridiculed and demonized as extremists. Last week Montana’s governor referred to us a “bat-crap crazy.� So once again, let me explain America’s greatest founding principle and why this citizen is “bat-crap crazy� about our current predicament. The spark of liberty which in 1776 drove ordinary patriots to do extraordinary things, needs re-ignited. Let it begin with you, right here, right now. By Divine Providence and in two eternal sentences, Thomas Jefferson clearly defined what it uniquely means to be an American in our Declaration of Independence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.� He explained government’s function in the second sentence. “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.� For 235 years, the answers to the most complex of questions concerning the relationship between God, liberty and government can be found in those two sentences. Now, this balance is under assault. Our rights come from God, not government, and being unalienable they cannot be taken away. Unfortunately, we can surrender them, and sadly we have at alarming rates. Now, let me put a face on unalienable rights by explaining a bill I carried in the legislature, HB271, an Act allowing for the permit-less conceal-carry of weapons. Self-preservation of your life, liberty and property is a fundamental right endowed by our Creator. Government’s obligation to secure that right is defined in the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, and in Article II, Section 12 of the Constitution of the State of Montana. In 1919, by making the conceal-carry of self-defense objects a crime, Montana legislators surrendered the right of self-preservation to the law enforcement agencies of government. (Just so you know, Montana Code includes slingshots, brass knuckles and knives with blades longer than 4 inches as self-defense weapons which are illegal to conceal.) The right to openly carry weapons remained intact, but the tactical advantage inherent in conceal-carry was traded away under the guise of enhanced public safety. Yielding our rights is very easy and is always billed in the media as being progressive and open minded. However, earning them back requires the blood, sweat and tears of ordinary patriots who have simply had enough. This bill has passed the House and Senate and is currently sitting on the governor’s desk. He has until May 12th to veto, sign, or let it become law without his signature. With Montana’s passage of HB271, we will join Wyoming, Arizona, Alaska and Vermont as states allowing citizens to conceal-carry weapons without first obtaining the permission of government. This is but one small step to re-establish fundamental constitutional principles and to obstruct this is “bat-crap crazy.�

In Honor of Those Who Served

n the time since Montana became a state in 1889, she has sent her fair share of Ithese men and women to defend our nation and our freedoms. As a state we honor men and women the last Monday of every May as part of Memorial Day. Memorial Day began as a holiday to remember the American Soldiers that died during the Civil War. General John Logan, national Commander of the Army of the Republic, officially proclaimed, in General Order No. 11 on May 5, 1868 that … i. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit. We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, “of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion.” What can aid more to assure this result than cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic. If other eyes grow dull, other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain to us. Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have

Time will not dim the glory of their deeds... ~General John J. Pershing left among us a sacred charge upon a nation’s gratitude, the soldier’s and sailor’s widow and orphan. In accordance with General Order No. 11, May 30, 1868, the graves of both the Union and Confederate soldiers interred at Arlington National Cemetery had flowers placed upon them. New York officially recognized the holiday in 1873. Though many cities and towns that proclaim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day as well as substantial evidence that Southern women were decorating graves FORT WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON The proceeds from these Memorial Day sponsor ads will be going to the Veterans Hospital at Fort Harrison near Helena, Montana. A Congressional Act in 1892 consolidated troops from several smaller military installations into larger installations across the country. Originally named after President Benjamin Harrison upon the fort’s establishment in May of 1892, the name was later changed upon the realization that an Indiana post used the same name. In 1906, the Montana fort’s name was changed to its present day title in honor of William Henry Harrison, an Army man who served in Congress, acted as Governor of the Northwest Indian Territory in 1800, and was named U.S. President just one month before his death. Fort William Henry Harrison was first garrisoned with troops from Fort Assinniboine near Havre, Montana in September 1895. These initial troops were withdrawn in 1913. Fort Harrison’s most famous contribution during the 20th century was its 1942 use as the organization and training area for the U.S. Army’s 1st Special Service Force, a joint World War II American-Canadian light infantry brigade made famous by the 1966 book, The Devil’s Brigade and the 1968 American war film of the same name. While Fort Harrison was eventually closed as an Army post, Montana National Guardsmen continue to utilize the fort, and a Naval Reserve training facility and a VA hospital are located on-site. The VA hospital at Fort Harrison, one of 152 across the nation, protects its soldiers in another kind of battle--aiding its wounded and ill from all across Montana. In honor of our American Heroes this Memorial Day, we encourage donations of all kinds to Fort Harrison in the form of cash, cookies, magazines, phone cards, or even just your time. Cash donations to Fort Harrison are used for hygiene products, refreshments, cable television and recreational supplies for patients among other things. Johnson, in May 1966 to be the official birthplace of Memorial Day. The South refused to acknowledge the day set apart by General Logan, honoring their fallen soldiers on separate days until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to honor Americans that died fighting in any war. This Commission acts as the guardian of all of America’s overseas commemorative cemeteries and memorials, honoring the service, achievements and sacrifice of our United States Armed Forces. According to the American Battle Monuments Commission’s website, www.abmc.gov... The Commission administers, operates, and maintains 24 permanent American burial grounds on foreign soil. Presently there are 124,909 U.S. war dead interred at these cemeteries, 30,921 of World War I, 93,238 of World War II and 750 of the Mexican War. Additionally 6,177 American veterans and others are interred in the Mexico City and Corozal American Cemeteries. The ABMC’s website offers a search engine that allows the user to input a soldier’s name to find where he was buried overseas. All of the ABMC Cemeteries have Memorial Day programs. Every gravesite is decorated with a flag of the United States and that of the host country. The U.S. Ambassador to the host country usually participates in the ceremony, along with other speakers, a presenting of the National Colors, wreath laying ceremonies along with military bands and units. One of the most impressive of the ABMC Cemeteries is the Normandy American Cemetery. This monument honoring 9387 of our military dead sits on 172.5 acres overlooking Omaha Beach and the English Channel. Most of the men who are interred there lost their lives on D-Day, and the ensuing operations. For people in the Great Falls area on Memorial Day 2011, the Montana Veterans Memorial will have a Memorial Ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. featuring guest speaker, James Parkinson, author of “Soldier Slaves.” Every Memorial Day at 3 p.m. “local time” since 2001, people have had the opportunity to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance taking time to “pause in an act of national unity for the duration of one minute.” This National Moment of Remembrance was established by the Congress in 2000 and signed into law by then President William J. Clinton. As this national holiday draws close consider how you and your loved ones will honor those brave men and women that served their country to the very end. And to those of you who served our nation, protecting our freedoms…thank you. 
