The Road To SucceSSful InveSTIng

The road to successful investing is paved differently for each investor. One investor’s road to success may be the high road while another’s may be the low road. But common to both investors is basic principles that are true to form no matter which road an investor finds themselves taking. Below is a listing of some of these basic principles that may lead an individual along the road to successful investing.

• Formalize your goals. As with the achievement of any goal, commitment to the goal is half the battle. Formalize your commitment to attaining your goals by writing them down, both short-term and long-term. Follow your progress by updating them at least annually. How else will you know if you are actually going to attain your goals?

• Invest early as possible. Procrastination is an investor’s worst enemy. Though there is no perfect or ideal time to start investing now may be the best time of all.

• Invest in what you understand. If you do not understand how an investment works you will not fully understand the risks associated with that investment.

Is it really worth it placing your hard-earned money in this type of investment?

No. • Consider the impact of inflation and taxes. Inflation and taxes erode an investor’s purchasing power. The consideration of investments that minimize the impact of these two forces may be key in meeting your goals.

• Your portfolio is for you and you alone. The design and formulation of your portfolio is based on your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. Understand that what may work for your friend, cousin, or co-worker may not work for you because one size does not fit all.

• A basket of eggs is better than just one. Diversification of your investment assets may bring the positive benefits of potentially reduced volatility to your investment portfolio basket. Mutual funds are a cost efficient way to invest while at the same time reaping the potential benefits of diversification.

• Use time, not timing when investing. Trying to correctly time the ups and downs of the market is a risky, if not impossible, task. Most investors will fare far better by keeping their investment assets in the market the entire time. It is time in the market, not timing the market.

• The old team player may be better than a young hotshot. Try to avoid the temptation of investing in the new “hotshot” investment that may lose its luster quickly. Seek investments with solid track records that will benefit you more over the long run.

• Know when to cut your losses. Many investors do not know when to get out of an investment. If your investment selection is heading south and most likely won’t return to previous form, face the music and consider getting out before your lumps get too big.

I was visiting customers in their home one afternoon. While I was talking to them, their four-year-old little girl, whose name was Michelle, tugged on my pants leg and excitedly exclaimed, “I got a new bicycle. Do you want to see it?”

I said, “Sure, Michelle.” so off to the backyard we went. Upon getting there, I saw a brand-new girl’s bicycle. “Wow, Michelle!

That’s a beautiful bicycle,” I complimented.

“Can you ride it?”

“Yeah, I can ride it,” she said, and then with a sad face she pouted, “but it’s broke.”

I looked at the new bicycle and couldn’t see anything wrong with it, so I asked her, “What’s wrong with it?”

“I don’t know,” she shrugged, “but every time I ride it, it falls down!”

WHO SAID IT: WILLIAM FEATHER (Aug. 25, 1889-Jan. 7, 1981)1 founded a successful printing business and was editor of The William Feather Magazine. Though a native of Jamestown, N.Y., he graduated high school in Cleveland, Ohio in 1906.

After earning an A.B. from Western Reserve Univ. in 1910, he spent 5 years as a reporter for the Cleveland Press. Feather then worked a year in public relations and in 1916 started The William Feather Magazine in the printing shop of a friend, David Gibson. He later purchased the shop from Gibson, forming the William Feather Company in 1919.

CONTEXT: During the 1920s, Feather gained a national reputation as a “benevolent iconoclast*” through his writings.

His books included As We Were Saying (1921), Haystacks and Smokestacks (1923), The Ideals and Follies of Business (1927), and The Business of Life (1949). President Obama’s first administration has been very successful—he accomplished exactly what he promised. If you were blinded by Obama-mania during the 2008 presidential campaign, you possibly missed Senator Obama’s plans hoping to change our great American republic into a democracy where fairness reigns supreme. During his famous campaign conversation with Joe the Plumber, he clearly stated he believes the primary function of government is to share the wealth—take stuff from people who have earned it and give it to those who haven’t. Championing the equality of things as the ideal is in complete contrast to the equality of rights stated in our Declaration of Independence, because to achieve the former, you must destroy the latter. Founding father Alexander Hamilton explained this dichotomy brilliantly when he stated, “Inequality will exist as long as liberty exists. It unavoidably results from that very liberty itself.”

September 17, 1787, the framers of the US Constitution rang the liberty bell and it is still echoing across our great nation because they created a constitutional republic so resilient it simply cannot be destroyed by the dreams and desires of a single man during a single term. America and freedom will prevail.

As the 2012 campaign rhetoric heats up, be wary of any politician whose platform is based on the redistributive principle: “If you like your neighbor’s stuff, vote for me and I will give it to you.” America is $14 trillion in debt because politicians have promised more stuff than the neighbor actually has, so they have started giving away the stuff of the neighbor’s grandchildren. This theft-bygovernment will continue until voters stop rewarding politicians for stealing. Think about it.
