COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
It Was the Morning After
He rose to greet the New Year’s day His head, it beat a tune The mirror framed an animal, An ailing big raccoon.
“Alcohol aimed at your throat Response was sure to follow Dreadful force, it was applied You had no choice but swallow”.
His throbbing skull, it shook again Then came a close inspection Appearance bloomed into an ape, A blotched Botox injection.
“Beer and foam, they took a grip Red Solo cup held true The factors, they soon added up That’s why you’re black and blue”.
Pathetically, he called his wife “Would you please come here?” A smiling face peered in the room “You look pretty, dear”.
“I made your resolution, dear I was not asking please Both hands will be in pockets, ….When I request your keys”.
“It’s just what you were looking for You didn’t holler, please. Your head was stuck into a trap My mouse, you took the cheese”.
“It’s not a bed of roses It is no field of clover But if you ain’t sober, …..You’d better scoot over.”
“The bottle birds flew overhead Swooped in and hooked their talons They held you there in tight restraint They poured it in by gallons”.

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana
You And Your FinAnciAl Advisor, The PerFecT TeAm Many investors rely upon Financial Advisors to help them manage their investment portfolio. Ideally the Financial Advisor and investor should work together, as a team, to find the right investments and make informed decisions that can help meet investment objectives. Below are some keys to developing a partnership with a financial advisor that likely will provide the best possible combination of service and long-term investment results. review your investment objectives. Your Financial Advisor will help define your investment objectives, but he or she needs your assistance to do a thorough job. Start to think through your objectives before you meet. Your participation and feedback will greatly aid your Financial Advisor in formulating an investment strategy that fits your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. Your questions will lead to being an informed investor. Be sure you fully understand the investments your Financial Advisor recommends for your portfolio. If you don’t, it’s your responsibility as an investor to let your Financial Advisor know that you need more information. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about your financial advisor’s investment recommendations and advice, after all they’re your investments! understand the risks with each investment. It’s important that you fully understand the risks in every investment you own and the reasons why the value of your investments may rise and fall. Your Financial Advisor can help explain the risks involved with each type of investment, and your questions will help make sure that nothing is overlooked. If you don’t completely understand the risks associated with your investment, ask more questions until you do. meet regularly to review your portfolio. Use these meetings to your advantage, go over your current investments, their performance and evaluate other investment opportunities. COWBOYS & cowgirls TAKE GREAT FALLS
E
very January, more than one thousand rodeo fans brave Montana’s fickle winter driving conditions for three nights of some of the best rodeo action Montana has to offer. The 33rd Annual Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals runs this January 13-15, held once again at the Four Seasons Arena. Tickets, available online, through the Four Seasons ticket office or via the mail, went on sale December 10. On the Schedule Thursday night the pre-rodeo action kicks off with the Great Falls Chamber Pro Rodeo Mixer, in the Heritage Inn’s Convention Area with the Cowboy Auction to follow in the Heritage Inn’s American Room. Friday features the first night of Montana Pro Rodeo Finals competition starting at 7 p.m. at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls. The next day offers more to do before the rodeo begins again at 7 p.m.; the Montana Bucking Horse and Bull Sale begins at 9 a.m. with the Kiddie Rodeo happening from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Heritage Inn Convention Area. Bidders that missed out on Thursday night’s auction have the opportunity to bid again on their favorite cowboys and cowgirls in the Britain room at the Heritage Inn from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday finishes out the rodeo weekend with Cowboy Church at 10 a.m. in the Britain Room at the Heritage Inn. The Miss Rodeo Montana Coronation takes place from 9-11:30 a.m. Finally, the last go round starts at 2 p.m. followed by the Year-End and Finals Awards Presentations topping off the weekend at 4:15 p.m. in the Four Seasons Arena. Who’s On Deck The cowboys and cowgirls competing at the Circuit Finals are comprised of the top twelve competitors from each event who have earned the most money at Montana PRCA sanctioned rodeos during this past rodeo season. After they’ve secured their spot in the top twelve, the rough stock riders choose which animals get the chance to show what they’ve got at the Finals. Once the bulls and horses have been chosen, it must be determined that the rough stock contractors they belong to have supplied the animals to at least five different Montana PRCA rodeos for the season. These cowboys also choose who’s going to have their back in the arena, voting on who will be the bull fighters and pickup-men of the MPRCF. Behind the Scenes The process for choosing the barrel man, timer, secretary, and announcer becomes more involved. Each person applying for their respective positions must be a card carrying PRCA member for their particular “office.” The application goes to the PRCA, who processes their application and forwards their selections to the Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals Board to make the final choice. The board needs almost a year to prepare for the next year’s rodeo, and appreciates everything the sponsors do in support of the Circuit Finals. Let’s Talk Money The Cash Calendars have played an important role in the event for the past several years. Monies earned from the sale of the calendars get thrown in with the rodeo winnings. Though limited to a printing of 3,650 calendars, anyone interested can pick one up for $30. Each calendar has a registered number. That

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor
by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58
Patriot’s Resolution
We hope you enjoy reading this feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but
you will always have something to discuss over dinner.
In August of 1776, King George expected Washington to surrender his Continental Army after their quick defeat in the Battle for Long Island. Two weeks later, New York City, the crown jewel of the new world, also fell to British control. The cause appeared lost, yet a small minority of colonists held firm. Patriots skirmished, starved and retreated for nearly four months until Christmas Day when they unexpectedly reversed course, crossed the Delaware River in the icy darkness, and decimated the fat and happy Hessian mercenary forces in their comfortable winter quarters in Trenton. What gives? How is it possible for a starving army of farmers and merchants, one-third of which who wrapped their feet in burlap and rope because they lacked boots, to win a six year war of attrition over an adversary possessing a superior supply of food, arms, men and training? Here is how and why—it was the hand of God. America is the channel through which God touches the lives of all humanity. For 235 years, our great American experiment in freedom has relieved more human suffering than any other nation and there were many times where it appeared we might fail except for the dispensation of Divine Providence. I recognize a statement such as this runs contrary to the conventional wisdom perpetuated in academia, the media, and our White House. They are wrong. Our great republic was divinely inspired to be the land of limitless opportunity where anyone willing to work or risk can make it big and become generous tithers. Occupiers are oblivious to the relationship between risk, work and reward and mistakenly think simply by existing they are entitled to the bounty from the sweat of others. Unfortunately, one and one-half of America’s national political parties have abandoned God’s principles of liberty and instead based their platform on this Marxist theory of redistribution. Do not buy the lie! It is freedom which makes our American republic the greatest institution in world history. This brings me to my point. Being an American is a participatory event. As President Ronald Reagan said, freedom is not something which is passed from one generation to the next in the bloodlines; it must be earned. Have you done everything possible to insure your posterity will enjoy the blessings of American liberty? If not, it is time. The restoration of America begins with you, because it won’t begin anywhere else. This New Year’s I encourage you to take the Patriot’s Resolution—it is a three step process. Begin by reading the Bible in its entirety in 2012. (If you’ve already done that, do it again. There is a lot in there.) Steps two and three are much easier, but of equal importance. Reread America’s “Declaration of Independence” and “Constitution”. Every night around your dinner table, discuss a single topic which has been addressed in either of our founding documents and tie it to a Biblical principle. Fathers, this means you will need to do your homework before dinnertime, but remember freedom is not easy, only worth it. Use these family discussions as a stepping stone to influence others and create a tidal wave of patriots with the fervor for independence like was seen in ’76. To do anything less cheapens the sacrifice of the two starving Continental soldiers who died from exposure on December 25th, 1776; the night they joined Washington crossing the Delaware. On that fateful Christmas night, not a single patriot died from a Hessian musket ball or bayonet, yet two left this world because they had exhausted their body fat stores and could no longer maintain their core temperature. They spent all they had for liberty. What say you?
