COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

From Yonder to the City Walter dwells back in the hills He rarely sees the city Earl sends a welcome note, Visit now, it’s pretty.

In the car were Earl and Walt They motored to the mall Earl then left him at the door Walter leaned against the wall.

Walter thought he heard her name Though no one will ever know Rings and things in ears and tongue Intrigue began to show.

It’s Susie’s turn to read the card She ponders on the letter “Walter, go and fetch the truck A trip could not be better”.

Positioned near the entrance door That’s where he rolled a smoke People glared with great intrigue Not one person spoke.

Chat must be her middle name Knowledge was amassed Walter soon was joined by Earl Time had quickly passed.

Their destination, it is reached They’ve achieved the distance Traffic looms both left and right He drives with great persistence.

Then near the ashtray, she appeared Old Walter was aware He now had a smoking mate She had peacock colored hair.

Back at Earl’s, Walter spoke He told them all about it The other three just shook their heads In no way would they doubt it.

Red carpet is invisible The welcome, it unfurls Walt and Susie have arrived This home is Cousin Earl’s.

Walter’s such a gentleman He said, “Howdy do” With a wink, she then exhaled, “It’s nice meeting you”.

An auto maker would be proud Her name’s derived from such He tried and tried to recollect Their help was needed much.

Sally’s at the door with Earl Their greetings are completed They enter to the living room The ladies are then seated.

Walter’s ears are somewhat dim He must strain to listen He was sure he caught her name Something might be missin’.

Chevelle and Chevy weren’t confirmed Neither was Corvette It never meant a hill of beans Ol’ Walter pondered yet.

A verbal memo, it was sent Earl received from Sally “Your appointment will be soon You have no time to dally”.

She had a doodad in her snout Like a hog ring for a sow He knew she had her bearings They protrude out of her brow.

They rattled off the names of cars There’s luxury and sport Walter’s mind was jogged at Ford Her name, he said, was Escort. Fred Liese Tricia’s Trader, © 2012

Money Talks

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana

CREDIT CARD RELIEF Recent economic reports have observed that Americans reverted back to the credit-dependent trends of the eighties. Apparently, the nation’s populace hasn’t heeded the warnings regarding carrying too much debt. Unfortunately, this statement could be applied to the federal government as well. For families grappling with swollen credit card balances, professional financial advisors offer a three-step strategy for coping with year-end bills and avoiding future troubles. The International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP), recommends: understanding the credit terms of card issuers, • learning how, and whether, cards should be used, and • developing an aggressive plan for paying off debts. • Consumers should find out the conditions and policies of their lenders, such as length of grace period, whether the interest rate is fixed or variable, and how much is charged for cash advances. A study by Princeton Survey Research Associates found that 76 percent of card holders do not know their credit cards’ payment terms. Most people have too many credit cards and are surprised at just how high a price they pay for the convenience of the card. Most consumers only need one major credit card that is universally accepted. For people who have the cash flow to pay off balances each month, a charge card - rather than a credit card - is a better choice. If credit is needed, choose a card with the lowest available interest rate. Often, people with one or more credit cards should look for a card that charges less interest and transfer all of their debt to that one card. Ultimately, the way to bring credit card debt under control is with an aggressive plan to pay off existing balances. After consolidating as many credit card bills as possible, tackle the card with the highest interest rate first. Pay as much as possible toward the principal each month, while paying the minimum required on any other cards. As you eliminate the balance, begin paying more toward the principal on the others. Credit cards sometimes make sense for smaller or short-term needs, but for major purchases, a home equity line of credit might be a better choice since the interest is lower and is usually tax deductible. Understanding the proper use of credit cards is an important part of the overall financial planning process. Be sure to check with your financial advisor to see what alternatives are available to you. Several days ago as I left a meeting at our church, I desperately gave myself a personal TSA pat down. I was looking for my keys. They were not in my pockets. A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing. Suddenly, I realized I must have left them in the pickup. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My wife, Mable, has scolded me many times fo leaving the keys in the ignition. My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them. Her theory is that the car will be stolen. As I burst through the doors of the church, I came to a terrifying conclusion. Her theory was right. the parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the pick-up, and that it had been stolen. Then I made the most difficult call of all, “Honey,” I stammered. I always call her ‘honey’ in times like these. “I left my keys in the pickup, and it has been stolen.” There was a period of silence. I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard Mable’s voice. “J.B.” She barked, “I dropped you off!” Now it was my time to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, “Well, come and get me.” Mable retorted, “I will, as soon as I convince this policeman I have not stolen your pickup!”

“StrongWomen” in Blaine County

by Teresa Terry, Blaine County Extension Agent

Two of the most important things we can do to stay healthy in life is to stay physically active and be properly nourished. Scientists for the past twenty years have obtained valuable knowledge about the aging process and how we can maintain strength, dignity and independence as we approach and enjoy the later years in life! Scientific research has shown that beginning in our mid-forties, women lose ¼ to 1/3 pound of muscle per year and gain that much or more in fat. In order to stay strong and vital during older adulthood, participation in regular strengthening exercises is essential and it will help to prevent osteoporosis by stimulating the growth of muscle and bone. Being and feeling physically strong also helps promotes both mental and emotional health. No group in our society can benefit more from regularly performed exercise than middle-aged and older adults. Scientific research has demonstrated that exercise with weights (strength training) will increase strength, muscle mass and bone density in middle-aged and older adults. Strength training exercises will also reduce the risk for the many chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and arthritis. It has also been shown to reduce depression, improve sleep and contributes to an overall sense of well-being among older individuals. Disability and a reduced ability to perform daily activities are primary concerns of many older adults today. The loss of our muscle mass combined with chronic disease symptoms can limit one’s ability to perform daily tasks such as cleaning or shopping and can seriously compromise independence. Strength training is an extremely powerful antidote to the loss of muscle mass and the development of chronic diseases that are frequently associated with aging. Based on scientific research, increasing the muscular strength in the elderly through a strength training program is not only a realistic, but safe option to maintain independence and functional ability. If you would like to learn more about the STRONG WOMEN program, the benefits of strength training or how to improve the health and well-being of middle-aged and older adults as well as de-conditioned younger adults, please contact your local County Extension office.

Bill’s Food

Dig right in to our newest regular guest column! Bill Hake invites you to test his recipes and his theories and tell us what you think. And he takes “requests”!

Corner Wrinkles and sagging skin, what’s the cause?

The answer is, multiple choice. A) Lifestyle, B) Nutrition, and C) Aging, as they all play a role in how our skin ages. A) Lifestyle. We need the sun to make vitamin D. Sunlight works on the subcutaneous (beneath the skin) fat layer to make vitamin D; it takes about 15 minutes to ½ hour of sun to make a day’s supply of vitamin D. Beyond that point the UV rays (ultraviolet light) begin to break down the collagen (long fibers) that hold our skin together and give it strength. Sun bathing in your bikini without good sun blocker is a recipe for premature wrinkles and worse. Seriously, skin cancer is not fun--I could do a full column on it just from my own experience. B) Nutrition. Our modern day diet is so deficient in good nutrition it’s hard to know where to start. First, we need Cholesterol (good healthy animal fat) to replace the fat that sunlight converts to vitamin D, and to provide a good cushion to smooth the skin and fill the wrinkles. Our liver will build the cholesterol we need if we provide the raw materials it needs (saturated animal fat)-polyunsaturated vegetable oil will not get the job done. Second, we need collagen (connective tissue) to give our skin strength and to tighten it up over our cushion of subcutaneous fat. Third, we need calcium to build and maintain a solid foundation to support our muscles and skin. Now let’s work on a recipe to supply all of these nutrients at once. Making beef bone stock is a forgotten art that not many people do anymore, yet is one of the healthiest meals you could serve your family. Gather as many bones with a little meat on them as you can. It’s easier to make a large batch and freeze what you don’t need for future use. Put the bones in a large stock pot with enough water to cover, add ¼ cup vinegar for each gallon of water (this is to help leach the calcium out of the bones), bring to a boil, then turn down heat to maintain a slow simmer. If you like, you can add a course chopped onion, carrot, celery stalk and a bay leaf to add flavor. Skim the foam off the top as it accumulates. At about 2 hours check the meat on the bones. As soon as it is loose remove the bones from the pot and let them cool enough to handle. Remove the meat and all connective tissue (this is the collagen) and return the bones to the pot, simmer for at least 6 more hours, adding water as necessary to cover bones. Chop the meat and connective tissue to bite size; keep some fat but not an excessive amount, and refrigerate when cool. When you are finished cooking the bones strain the liquid through a double layer cheese cloth and discard the bones and veggies. If you like a clear broth you can strain several times until it comes out clear. Let the broth cool, then refrigerate overnight. In the morning, the fat on the surface will be hard and easy to remove. The broth will be jelled and ready to use with the meat scraps in a soup, sauce or gravy, or whatever your need might be. C) Aging. Don’t sweat it! Be happy you made it far enough to develop wrinkles because of your age. Anyway, those aren’t “wrinkles”. They’re badges of honor for all the love you have given your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren through a lifetime of service. If you have a better recipe I’d love to see it. Acupuncture and Your Health

by Tammy Ellison Healing Grace Acupuncture

Commonly, acupuncture is known as a great therapy for all pain conditions including back and neck pain, tennis elbow, shoulder and knee pain, whiplash, bursitis, migraine etc. The more informed person may even realize that it is very effective at treating allergies, asthma, colitis, menopausal symptoms, insomnia, and depression, to name a few. What I want to share with you is the wonderful medicine of health promotion that is embodied within the practice of traditional Chinese medicine. Governing health is the body’s systematic and continuous flow of vital energy, called “QI”, through pathways known as channels or meridians. In a person with no health complaints or pain the Qi flows from one channel to the next uninterrupted. However, when there are blockages, shortages, or excesses in the channels, there are symptoms felt by the individual. The symptoms will start simply and vaguely but worsen with time if left unattended. For example, a person’s lack of energy, irritability, and restless sleep would worsen into fatigue, irascibility, and insomnia. Traditional Chinese Medicine’s approach is to assess the individual’s vital energy flow, and reestablish balance. The nature of the human body is to constantly strive for homeostasis or normalcy, Acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy are assistants to this natural inquisition. One very key aspect to promoting health is strengthening digestion. Digestion is how we make the energy (Qi) that we use to function every day. If digestive Qi is strong, then all organ systems will be nourished and the person more likely to experience health. This includes the important aspects of metabolism, building muscle, and endurance. The immune system (Wei Qi) flourishes when digestive energy is in balance allowing the person to avoid suffering infections or helping to fight them off in a fraction of time. In addition long term effects of a balanced system wards off chronic disease and slows down the depleting effects of aging. Acupuncture treatments can strengthen the digestion as well as any other system that may become weakened. The nature of this ancient medicine is to balance the system as a whole, so as to help it heal itself on every level. Maybe you should consider trying some 2,500 year old medicine next time you reach for the acetaminophen or the antacids, and get rid of the root of the problem instead of covering up its warning symptoms.

Combating Illness

ABCs of Beautiful Skin

Our bodies are the most amazing, technologically advanced machines on the planet, and if we will simply provide them with the resources they need to function at an optimal level, they will do just that. I believe that we “beat illness” before it gets to us. What I mean by that is when we are truly healthy, and our immune system and metabolic function is where it should be, we can get over the illness that we are exposed to quite quickly without it becoming a chronic issue. This season has been one full of upper respiratory infections, coughs, congestion, runny nose and feeling cruddy. No one feels very healthy or beautiful during these bouts of illness. The following is a list of what I do in my own home to treat myself and my family for seasonal cold and flu: 1.) The quickest way to improve the quality of our health is to improve the quality of our food. We should not limit our intake of animal products, increase our intake of whole food, plant based items, stay away from sugar, and processed foods. Doing this alone will allow our immune system to function at a much higher level, and give us the ability to dispense of viral/bacterial exposures before they become a chronic problem. 2.) Get good rest, and make sure we do not stay up too late so our adrenal glands do not become over-burdened. By good rest, I mean getting to sleep, not just being in bed, at a consistent time every night, and preferably by 10 p.m. because our adrenal glands will recharge between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. Adrenal gland fatigue is nothing to be trivial about. 3.) Get a healthy amount and type of exercise, but not prolonged, over-strenuous exercise. Studies have shown that prolonged exercise wears down our bodies resources, and does not allow for recovery. A repetitive series of this scenario will truly wear us down and prevent us from fighting off illness of almost any kind. A couple of 25-45 minute exercise sessions in the day will not drain the body down, and will allow for much quicker recovery and improved overall physiologic and metabolic health. 4.) When I start feeling illness coming on these are some of the remedies I use: • Vit C: High quality, preferrably liquid or powder that can be reconstituted prior to ingestion. Linus Pauling recommended 1000mg every hour throughout the day up to bowel tolerance. Once bowel tolerance is reached, back off 500mg or so for optimal therapeutic value. • Vit D: I take 15,000 to 30,000 units, and give 10,000 IU or so to my children during illness. I recommend a liquid Vitamin D3 (natural, not synthetic) in a coconut oil carrier, or other absorbable form so the body can assimilate it and use it at the cellular level. • Garlic: I use 2-3 cloves 2-3 times daily to tolerance treatment. When a clove of garlic is peeled, I chop it up and swallow with water, or place the chopped up garlic in some chicken broth, or whatever is your preference. Other remedies that can be used with high efficacy: • Herbal treatments: • Children’s Glycerite - this is one of my favorite remedies for children, and even for adults. It is a blend of excellent herbs for immune support with many peripheral benefits for the body, and it tastes great also. • Nebulized Treatments: • I recommend a remedy of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, Magnesium, and Manganese mixed in normal saline. The remedy is nebulized several times a day and will knock out the cold/flu in a couple of days. It is very affordable and will last in the fridge for approximately 90 days. • Glutacyst: This is a blend of licorice root, N-Acetyl Cysteine, and Glutathione that is also nebulized twice daily or more. • Wet Socks Treatment: This is a hydrotherapy remedy that really works great, but one must do it before the illness is set in and the body is too run down to respond to it. Dip a pair of thin cotton ankle high socks in pure ice water, wring them out and put them on. Once the cold socks are on, use a pair of thick wool socks over the top of them to prevent the water from evaporating or absorbing away onto the floor, bed sheets, or other. I prefer to do this at night before I go to bed. The body will be stimulated to get the blood to the feet to warm the body and by morning the sock with be both dry and warm. This process stimulates nutrient delivery, lymph flow to carry toxins out, and also the central nervous system and immune system. It works extremely well, and I even use it with my kids.

Helping your skin be its very best is as simple as: A. Cleanse and Polish Clean Sweep! A great cleanser sets the stage for beautiful skin. It should purify and soothe your face without stripping the skin of its natural goodness. Look for sulfate-free cleanser. While sulfates are not “bad”, they can strip and dry already dry and sensitive skin. During the harsh dry winter months, consider using a water soluble creamy cleanser. Look for an aloe based cleanser with moisturizing and nourishing ingredients. Be gentle with your skin. Hot water can burn and irritate, yet cold water can shock your skin causing broken capillaries. A healthy skin renews itself totally in about 28 days. Peels and Polishers are speedy skin improvers, shedding dead skin cells to encourage the growth of new ones. This is an often skipped step. Don’t! Nearly 70% of the visible signs of aging are simply dehydrated and dead skin cells! It’s also the one step that can give you nearly instant results. The newest products contain ingredients that can be used every other day, maximizing the exfoliation process. There are several types of exfoliation methods, but the easiest to use are the polishers containing spherical beads that polish off the dead layers, or gels containing fruit acids that gently resurface and exfoliate the skin while soothing and moisturizing. B. Treat Boost and Blossom! Treatment products give your skin a super boost, tightening and brightening your skin. These products focus on special areas of concern like dryness and sagging. Look for products containing ingredients like Sodium Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, DMAE (an FDA approved ingredient to firm and tone skin), and Matixyl 3000. C. Hydrate A good moisturizer is your best friend! It will supply hydration, help form a protective barrier from external stressors and reduce the signs of aging. Night creams serve a different purpose. A good one isn’t greasy. Its purpose is to deeply nourish your skin while you sleep. Look for creams with Peptide blends, and Matryxl 3000.

I Can’t Lose the Weight

by Edwin Medina, M.D. Phillips County Hospital

A lot of my patients who come to me with complaints of not being able to attain what is known as their “Ideal Body Weight” and are quite frustrated with the old adage “you just need to exercise more and eat less”. “I am too fat and no matter what I do I can not seem to lose weight.” If this sounds a little too familiar, rest assured that you are not alone. Certainly, there are thousands of success stories about this or that fad diet (whichever one is most popular at the moment) and many people who swear up and down that this is “the best diet that I have ever used”, tend to gain the weight back plus some after they start eating regularly again. The problem, quite simply, is that DIETS DON’T WORK. I have seen my share of fad diets and the disappointment that follows once the patient is off their “diet”. For the last 17 years I have counseled patients with weight issues that they should modify their lifestyle by eating in a physiologically acceptable manner and do a bit of moderate aerobic exercise as well as setting aside a little time each day for meditation or prayer. What is that you say? What do prayer/meditation and exercise have to do with losing or gaining weight? And what exactly is a “physiologically acceptable” way of eating? I would like to start by saying that a part of the principles that I use in my “lifestyle modification program” are loosely based on a book that I read approximately 17 years ago called Fit for Life, written by Lou and Harvey Diamond, two Ph.D. nutritionists. I highly recommend the reading of this book for anyone who is serious about obtaining their ideal body weight. There are certain facts which need to be discussed before going any farther. You may recall from high school chemistry that pH is a measure of acidity; so, a low pH means that something is very acid, and a high pH means that something is very alkaline or basic. It is a well known fact that protein is digested optimally in an acid environment, and starch is digested optimally in an alkaline environment. From the previous statements it may become clear that due to the extremes of pH that are needed to digest protein and starch simultaneously, “meat and potatoes” is notoriously a difficult meal to digest. The body, in an effort to help digest what is in the stomach, will sequester blood from other organs, including the brain and divert it to the stomach, leaving us with that after-lunch sleepiness that typically occurs when we mix protein with starch. (Ham and Cheese sandwich anyone?) Additionally, the body has certain cycles, which if respected will lead to better digestion and elimination of unwanted weight. I recommend daily aerobic exercise in order to tone the muscles that may have been neglected over the years. I also think that starting one’s day off with a prayer to our Heavenly Father or meditation will do wonders for stress and the hormones that are secreted in response to it. You will feel more energetic and better about yourself if you try the lifestyle modifications discussed in the book. The principles that I have summed up here are by no means the only way to get to an ideal body weight, but in my opinion, they are certainly one of the most effective and long lasting ways to do so. More than a diet, it is a way of life, and I would be more than happy to guide you along the way if you feel that you should need help after reading the book. Please feel free to contact us at Phillips County Hospital and Family Medical Center for an appointment.

Why Diets Don’t Work

by Dr. Eric Norslien Norslien Chiropractic Clinic

Almost everyone has tried diets to lose unwanted pounds. Feeling drained or discouraged because the weight returns, this often results in disappointment. The dieting cycle can be devastating. Why diets don’t work: • Diets cause starvation mode: Most diets cause a starvation mode that actually slows the metabolism, rather than resetting the system (for example, the pancreas). A diet that causes starvation rather than addressing a healthy approach to loosing the fat is doomed to eventually fail. The result is a loss of muscle mass, which is exactly what you don’t want to lose. Muscles burn a lot of energy. • The Plateau Effect: Progress tends to plateau when a person’s energy gets low, when they don’t feel well, or when their weight loss is slow. They often give up and quickly gain back the previously lost weight, plus extra pounds. In addition, due to the loss of their muscle mass, they are now carrying more fat. • Mental and emotional factors not addressed: There is a tremendous amount of emotion involved in dieting and losing weight – everything from emotional attachment to foods, the value of one’s self, stress eating and addiction to food. The possible problems that being thin and attractive might create can influence the success rate of a diet as well. Underlying beliefs can cause individuals to subconsciously self-sabotage the diet, or experience major body-resistance to weight-loss. • Other physiological factors not addressed: An example of this is poor thyroid functioning, which hinders the body from losing weight. High stress will also inhibit weight loss due to high amounts of cortisol, which is a fat-producing hormone. Along with improper dieting, individuals often rely on exercise to lose weight, and while exercising is important to maintain proper body health, it is a very inefficient way to lose weight on its own. A person can run an entire marathon and lose only 3,500 calories (1 pound of fat equals 3,500 calories). You may know someone who started exercising, only to quickly get frustrated by the amount of work they were doing while not getting the results they desired.

What type of diet works:

A minimum diet A very important concept to respect is that the body really doesn’t want to lose its fat. Fat is a precious commodity it retained in the case of a food shortage. We are physically programmed to conserve fat and not burn it unless we absolutely need to. • Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates, when over consumed, increase insulin production, which signals the carbohydrates to be stored as fat rather than burned for energy. In order to assist the body with losing fat in a natural way, the carbohydrates must temporarily be reduced. This reduction forces the body to use its energy reserves – fat. Carbohydrates are the first energy your body will burn. If you are eating carbohydrates why would your body want to burn fat? It won’t. So reducing the carbohydrate consumption will force the body to tap into its fat reserves. The body doesn’t care if it is a “good” carbohydrate (apple) or a “bad” carbohydrate (candy bar). As long as it can burn carbohydrates it won’t burn fat. So an apple won’t make you fat, but it can keep you from losing weight. • Fat: By reducing fat consumption (except for “good” fats), calories are kept to a minimum. • Protein: The projected target is 1/2 gram protein per pound of lean body mass. It is important to not overload with protein – this will produce excessive calories and slow weight-loss. An adequate daily minimum assumes muscle tissue will not be burned for energy. The pancreas resets during this diet shift; therefore it is strongly recommended to follow a proven, structured plan complete with coaching and assigned supplements. The coaching ensures physical monitoring and accountability from the dieter, gives them support to be successful, and makes sure of no nutritional deficiencies. There are several factors influencing a person’s connection to food or weight. Even a good diet, proven to be highly effective, may not completely address them all. A person’s weight may be influenced by other physiological or emotional matters that need to be addressed in order for the body to maintain a desired weight. Dr. Norslien has worked in Central Montana as a Chiropractor since 1999 and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractics in 1995. Being the director of both Wellness Weighs and the Complete Health and Allergy Center, Dr. Norslien dedicates his career to providing patients with effective relief for all types of physical, mental and emotional conditions affecting the body.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58

We hope you enjoy reading this feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but

you will always have something to discuss over dinner.

Zombie Voters

Fifteen years ago, I assembled a horse and mule cavy to use in my cattle drive busines. Joe Diffie was well ahead of today’s trend line when he released the country/ western hit “Prop Me Up Beside the Juke Box (If I Die)”. The lyrics humorously describe the last wishes of a barfly and the mythical image makes you chuckle, or at least it did in 1993. Look around. Do you see any dead people? Look hard because apparently dead people are harder to spot today than they were 18 years ago. The perfect example of this desensitization was seen (or not seen) last week in an internet café in Taiwan. A 23-year-old was sitting in the corner playing video games when he cardiac arrested. With 30 other patrons passing in and out of the café, his corpse continued playing Angry Birds for nine hours and no one noticed he was dead. Granted, this is a news story from Asia, but I see no reason why this couldn’t have happened in the electronic cafés of Seattle, San Francisco or Denver. Could progressives capitalize on this inattentiveness for nefarious purposes? Ponder that thought while I appear to change horses. Don’t worry, I’ll be back. Let’s say you own 100 cows and ten of them disappear through the fence. When your banker learns of your ten percent loss he will prolapse, so you saddle up, call your dog and ride the neighboring pastures. Your search is futile. While commiserating with fellow cowboys over pie and coffee at the local sale barn cafe, an eavesdropping official from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics approaches your table. “I couldn’t help but overhear your problem, but I have some very good news about your cows,” he explains. “Look at this way: Since your cows were smooth mouthed and skinny, very likely only eight of the missing cows were actually carrying a calf, so do not count the two non-pregnant escapees. On paper, this drops your loss from ten percent to eight percent. Does that help?” You thank him for his useful insight, but resume banging your head on the table because you know you are still missing ten cows regardless the magical calculations of the shiny man in the three-piece suit. He takes you for a fool; the kind who could play video games for nine hours while unknowingly sitting next to a corpse and this brings me to my point. The White House is trumpeting Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) headlines the unemployment rate has dropped to 8.3 percent and our economic recovery is underway. This message is targeting a very specific audience. Voters playing video games at the electronic café are expected to look up, read the MSNBC headlines, elbow the cold stiff guy sitting next to them, and mumble “Obama’s stimulus plan must be working.” They then click to the next kingdom of their game and retreat back into their cocoon. Just like not counting the non-pregnant escaped cows, the BLS mathematically dropped 1.2 million unemployed Americans from the job hunting list, so the unemployment figure magically dropped to 8.3 percent. Folks, you are being played for the fool. The fact is the number of Americans pulling the wagon for the Americans riding in the wagon has dropped to a 30-year low of 63.7 percent. Congressional Budget Office figures released earlier in the week are not as polished. They list our actual unemployment rate at 10 percent, our federal budget down another 1.1 trillion for the year, and are projecting tax increases of 30 percent over two years on those of us who still actually have jobs and are pulling the wagon. If we do not recognize the job numbers as cooked it is likely we will accept equally preposterous things like Obamacare will magically both cheapen and expand health coverage for all Americans. It is time to wake up and look around for dead people. Remember, a zombie’s vote counts just as much as yours. (Did that scare you?)
