The Joys and Financial Challenges of Parenthood

Children are special. There’s nothing like them. They can be our sweetest blessing, as well as our biggest frustration. Most of all, however, they are our greatest responsibility, as well as our most important-and expensive--commitment. Whether you are a first-time parent or a veteran of refereeing sibling squabbles and who-put-the-empty-milk-carton-back-in-the-fridge inquisitions, parenthood can be both wonderfully rewarding and frighteningly challenging. Our children give us gifts only a parent can understand--from sticky-finger hugs to “Can I come?” pleas to tag along on Saturday morning errands. We raise them with a clear goal that we secretly dread will actually take place--that someday they will be grown, independent, ready to move out into the world on their own, and our work will be over. As our children travel this long and never-dull road from infancy to adulthood, we nurture them, worry about them, scold them, love them. Most of all, we try to protect them. We want them to grow up in a stable world, one in which they are physically safe, emotionally nurtured, and financially secure. Still, meeting expenses can be a challenge. How expensive is raising a child? The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that the average nationwide cost of raising one child from cradle to college entrance at age 18 ranges from $163,440 to $377,040 depending on income. (Source: Expenditures on Children by Families, 2010) Then, when they turn 18, add in college expenses, and your financial outlay can get even worse. How much worse? According to the College Board, for the 2011/2012 school year, the average cost of one year at a four-year public college is $21,447 (for in-state students), while the average cost for one year at a four-year private college is $42,224. Even if those numbers don’t go up (and they have increased each year for decades), that would come to $85,788 for a four-year degree at a public college, and $168,896 at a private university. Oh, and don’t forget graduate school. The bottom line: Children are expensive! Between raising them and educating them and making sure they get a good, strong start in life, one thing is obvious when it comes to children--they are a major responsibility. Fortunately, as long as we remain alive and healthy, we manage to somehow meet these expenses. It’s part of what parenthood is all about. Have you taken steps to protect them? But here’s a question you need to consider: What would happen to them if something happened to you? No, it’s not the kind of question we like to dwell on. But these matters are important. This is why many financial professionals recommend that, above and beyond the day-to-day efforts to provide for their children, parents should take specific steps to help protect their financial well-being. Review your life insurance coverage Life insurance is one of the most effective ways to protect your family from the uncertainty of premature death. Life insurance can help assure that a preselected amount of money will be on hand to replace your income and help your family members--your children and your spouse--maintain their standard of living. With life insurance, you can select an amount that will help your family meet living expenses, pay the mortgage, and even provide a college fund for your children. Best of all, life insurance proceeds are generally not taxable as income. Purchase disability income insurance If you become disabled and unable to work, disability income insurance can pay benefits--a specific percentage of your income--so you can continue meeting your financial obligations until you are back on your feet. What about Social Security? If you do become permanently and totally disabled and are unable to do work of any kind, you may be eligible for benefits, but qualifying isn’t easy. For more flexible and comprehensive protection, consider buying disability income insurance. Start building a college fund now College costs may seem daunting (and they are expected to continue increasing), but you have about 18 years before your newborn will be a college freshman. By starting today, you can help your children become debt-free college grads. The secret is to save a little each month, take advantage of compound interest, and have a sum waiting for you when your child is ready for college. Turner and Blaine County Celebrate 100 Years

Several counties and towns on Montana’s Hi-Line will be reaching major centennial milestones in their histories over the coming years, Montana being “young” as she is in relation to the rest of the country. Here are highlights from just a couple of the activities that celebrate these proud events on Montana’s timeline. Blaine County 100 Years Strong

Prior to 1912, Blaine County, Hill County and what is now Phillips County were all part of Chouteau County with the county seat located at Fort Benton. Chouteau County at that time was the largest county in the Montana Territory and the second largest in the United States, with an area of over 15,000 square miles. Due to the sheer size of the county and the difficulty the outlying population faced in traveling over 250 miles to do business at their county seat, in 1912 the unit was divided into three smaller counties: Hill County and Blaine County, of which Phillips County branched off in 1914. Blaine County, in particular, celebrated its 100 year birthday with a ceremony at the Blaine County courthouse last February to commemorate the day of the official formation of Blaine County. Named for James G. Blaine, former U.S. Secretary of State, present-day Blaine County covers 4,239 square miles, 13 square miles of which are water.

The tiny town of Turner , located in the northeast corner of Blaine County, will once again roll out the sidewalks for hordes of her “children” returning home from across the world. Well, actually, the new sidewalks won’t be quite finished in time for the Turner Centennial Celebration and Hogeland-Turner All Class Reunion, but that won’t inhibit the fun. A full lineup of activities for the event ensures a cheery walk down memory lane for young and old alike. In true Big Flat style (as the area is known), the community plans to “do it up big” with anywhere from 400 to 700 people pulling into town for the celebration from all across the world. When Henry C. Turner established the first store on the Big Flat in Buckley Coulee in 1912, the same year of Blaine County’s birth, he also established the townsite, aptly named Turner, complete with 40 lots, two avenues and two streets. Henry and his son Clyde also owned their own freight team, making the goods for the store brought from Harlem much more affordable to area homesteaders. The region, blessed with abundant rain and snow in those years, blossomed. Bumper wheat crops aided by new farming techniques spurred W.H. Reed to contact executives at several railroad companies in hopes of building a spur line to the area to haul the upcoming harvests. In 1929, after railroad magnate James J. Hill initially turned down the invitation, the Great Northern Railway Co. completed the Saco Branch line. The train departed from near Cole Ponds at Saco, traveled to the newly established town of Hogeland and turned around there for the return trip. The whole Big Flat area was literally booming—the tiny town of Turner moved buildings and all from out of the coulee to the top of the hill to meet the new rail line. Maloney Trail Wagon Train From July 3 through July 8 of 2012 the Turner area may look a lot like it did in 1912, complete with a three-day wagon train along the Maloney Trail. Chris Maloney was one of the very first settlers to the area prior to 1912, and he created a “road” from his homestead at Chapman, Montana southwest to Harlem for hauling freight and sheep to meet the train there. On the morning of July 3, the 2012 Maloney Trail Wagon Train will pull out of camp east of Harlem at 7:00am, Turner-bound. Signs will be posted directing traffic to Monday night’s camp for those who wish to get an early start. No motorized vehicles will be allowed on the trail, but a bus will transport riders back to move their vehicles to the next camp. The evening camp on July 3rd will be at Calverts’ Pond, and on July 4th the wagon train will camp south of the Turner Colony. Riders are responsible for packing their own food, drinks and gear, but on the evening of July 4th Turner Colony will hold a no-host Pig Roast supper for $10 a plate, and fireworks will be held a ways from camp. The wagon train pulls into Turner at high noon on July 5th. Observers are encouraged to welcome the wagon trainers into town as they head up Main Street. Reunion and Centennial Happen Together Volunteers from the Alumni Association have been working alongside volunteers from the Big Flat Community Grain Bin, Inc. and the Turner-Hogeland Lions Club to plan a jam-packed event for the 2012 Celebration. The Alumni Association already has approximately 400 people registered for the All-Class Reunion; an impressive number considering the most recent all school reunion was held only five years ago. Activities for Hogeland and Turner alumni will be similar to the 2007 Reunion, with Yellowstone Kelly’s of Billings catering the weekend in the Big Tent; (Continued on page 18.)

various other activities will be housed under additional canopies at the Turner Park. There are some differences, however. For example, this year the Alumni Banquet will be Friday instead of Saturday, and while alumni were given the first chance at reserving their seat at the banquet, the banquet is now open on a first-come, first-served basis to any who wish to attend. Seating is limited to 560, so those who want a seat at the table should register soon, and pre-registration is required. The evening program promises to be a lively one, with a whole new lineup of entertainment and Pitchfork Fondue on the menu. Because the banquet is for adults only, a list of child care providers for the evening may be available by contacting Brenda Maloney at 406-379-2399 or Shawna Billmayer at 379-2520. The Picnic this year is to be held on Saturday with a live band that evening. Combined registration for the Banquet and Picnic is $125/couple or $75/person. Registration for the picnic only is $20 for adults, $15 for ages 11-17 and $10 for kids 10 and under. Picnic tickets may be purchased the day of the event, but pre-registration is required for the banquet. On Thursday evening at 4:00, reunion registration begins at the Turner Park, along with a plethora of activities to hold attendees’ interest. The main event that night besides registration will be the Triangle Communications Customer Appreciation Dinner, served by Big Flat Community Grain Bin, Inc. The no-cost meal is paid for entirely by Triangle Communications and is open to all. Door prizes and games are on the agenda, with Triangle employees on hand to answer questions and help serve the meal. Community Grain Bin board members will be preparing the meal, and will be available to provide information on the newly formed community foundation for the Big Flat. Donation cans will be out for those who wish to contribute to the BFCGB’s mission: “To build upon the foundations established by previous generations by enhancing and supporting the charitable efforts of local organizations and the public school”. The BFCGB recently completed and filed the appropriate paperwork required to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the IRS and hopes to have a determination back in time for the Centennial weekend. Big Flat Historical Group Book Sale The Big Flat Historical Group is proud to announce that “Whispering Winds: A History of the Big Flat” will be available for sale during Thursday and Friday registration. The finished product, selling for $100, is a hardcover bound book of over 725 pages. Topics include homesteading, railroad, towns, post offices, clubs and organizations, and family histories of the Big Flat area, just to name a few things. The book is printed on high quality coated paper and includes lots of photographs and personal stories. The book is a culmination of a project started five years ago by a dedicated group of local volunteers, and it would be a valuable addition to any historical book collection. Machinery Lineup – Old and New A centennial event wouldn’t be complete without an array of old equipment on display. Folks are encouraged to drag or drive their old machinery to town by Thursday evening, and be prepared to enter some “Slow Races” throughout the weekend. Newer machinery is welcome as well. Alan Van Voast is in charge of the machinery lineup, and plans to set up at

Van Voasts’ lot near their big grain elevator on Thursday evening after registration. Alan can be contacted at 379-2243 for more information. School and Historical Room Open Friday Turner School will open up for tours during Friday morning registration. This will be a chance for Turner alumni to check out their old stomping grounds. A room full of historical photos, antiques and school memorabilia will be on display as well. Anyone with items for display should contact Brenda Mohar at 379-2329; she will ensure that your items are set up and returned to you after that day. The Hogeland Happy Housewives will host a Pie Social that morning in the multi-purpose room of the school, to sustain you as you tour the building. On the menu are pie, cinnamon rolls and jumbo muffins as well as juice and coffee. Prices will be posted that day. Beard Growing Contest and Period Costume Contest Men, throw out your razors, and Ladies, dig up that outdated garb you thought would never come back in style. It’s time for a contest! Categories for the beard growing include Longest, Grayest, and Best Styled beards, and will be judged by a highly qualified, top-notch hairstylist from Turner. Prizes will be awarded. Costumes may be entered in four categories: *1900s thru 1920s *1930s thru 1950s *1960s thru 1970s *1980s thru 1990s. There will be a crowd-chosen semi-finalist from each category and a grand prize winner overall. Those who wish to participate are encouraged to wear your costumes at the parade as well, which takes place right before the contest. Highway Displays Local residents are invited to roll out a welcoming display along any road leading into Turner for the weekend of the centennial celebration. For more information and guidelines for building the displays, contact Shannon Brown at 406-379-2292 or Tricia Kimmel at 379-2512. Creativity is encouraged. To enter the highway display contest, submit a photo of your completed display to Shannon or Tricia by June 30th. The photos will be posted on a board at both days of registration for voting by the public, and winners will be announced immediately after the Costume Contest on Saturday. Historical Bus Tours Buses will be parked in front of the school at the Friday morning registration, and will depart around 10:30 for a tour around the Big Flat. The bus tour will double as a poker run for those who wish to participate. The poker ante will be $10, and cards will distributed at stops along the tour. Food at Every Turn Besides the meal options already mentioned, there will be food served throughout the weekend. Friday has Corn Dogs and Concessions being served by the Catholic PCCW at the Turner Park, as well as a Taco John’s cart on Main Street. Kimber’s Border Bar also will have their grille on, and Turner General Store will have extended hours and an extra full ice cream cart. Saturday morning, the Turner-Hogeland Lions Club will serve breakfast at the Legion Hall on Main Street starting at 8am. Of course, the Picnic takes place at the Turner Park at 2:00, and that evening during the dance at the Big Tent, there will be a Chicago Style Hot Dog Stand and a regular Concessions stand serving food outside the tent. Softball Games, Horseshoes and Bingo Kent Heilig will sign up teams at 10:00am at the school for anyone who wishes to play softball. Some equipment will be available for those who don’t have their own. Games begin at Leon Cederberg Memorial Park at 11am, continuing into the late afternoon. Terry Jones will head up a game of horseshoes at the pit located on the northwest corner of the Turner Park. Anyone who wants to participate can show up at 11:00 on Friday morning; games will continue thoughout the afternoon. Bingo is to be held in the Old Gym from 2-4pm on Friday, offering a cool place to chill for those who don’t wish to participate in the athletic events. “White elephant” prizes will be awarded throughout the afternoon session. State of the Art Fireworks An Independence Day birthday bash just wouldn’t be right without a show of colorful firepower, so after the Friday evening banquet, Vince Bell will put on a fireworks display at the west end of the airport, viewable from the park. Should weather interfere, the fireworks will proceed as planned the following night.

Kid Friendly Lots of activities are on the slate for kids of all ages. Saturday afternoon, in particular, there will be free mini-train rides by PJ Kimmel, and Larry Cederberg and friends will be offering Wagon Rides. Then, starting at 4:00, a full lineup of old fashioned games will take place at the Turner School Track, including apple bobbing, tug-o-war, three-legged races, gunny sack races, and a greased pig contest. There may be a pool set up and the Turner Volunteer Fire Department will be offering fire truck rides. Cowboy Poets The weekend would not be complete without entertainment by some country poets and pickers. All are invited to attend performances by local poet Fred Liese and comrades. Fred indicates there are entertainers descending on Turner from all across Montana and Canada. Be sure to attend this stellar show to be held in the Turner Old Gym at 4:00 on Saturday. Winding Down on Sunday A non-denominational Worship Service will be held as the final event of the weekend at the Turner Park in the Big Tent, followed by rolls and coffee and fellowship before everyone heads back home.

FORT PECK: Remembering 75 years

Fort Peck is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Fort Peck Dam on June 23 and 24. Fort Peck Dam is the largest hydraulically filled earth dam in the world. Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the project under his “New Deal” and it was constructed under the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Construction began in 1933 and by 1934 boomtowns were springing up all around the Project. The Project was officially closed in 1937; final completion of the dam wasn’t until 1940, however.

From start to finish, 61 people were killed building the Fort Peck Dam. For the 75th anniversary of the project, a dedication ceremony is set to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23 for a new memorial built in honor of those who were killed in construction accidents on the Fort Peck Dam Project, a number which includes eight who died in the “Big Slide of 1938”. Following the dedication, the Glasgow tourism business district will be holding a no-host picnic in Kiwanis Park at Fort Peck. Attendees are welcome to bring their own picnic lunches or purchase a meal there.

Later, at 2:00 on Saturday, the Fort Peck Theatre will be airing the PBS Documentary “Fort Peck Dam”, which first appeared on PBS television on May 21st. Any who miss the Saturday airing at the Theatre will have a second opportunity to watch it at the Interpretive Center on Sunday at noon. At 7:30 on Saturday evening, a performance of “All Shook Up” will be presented at the Theatre as well.

“Fifty Cents an Hour” author Lois Lonnquist will be holding a presentation at the Fort Peck Interpretive Center at 4:00 on Saturday, and again at 2:00 on Sunday. In her book, Lonnquist, who spent her earliest years in the boomtown of Wheeler, documents “The Builders and Boomtowns of Fort Peck Dam”. Director of the Interpretive Center, Michele Fromdahl notes that the Army Corp of Engineers is pleased to offer a 75th Anniversary historical publication describing the construction of the Fort Peck Dam project. The free 75 page booklet will be available for the first time on June 23rd, the day of the dedication ceremony. All are encouraged to attend this memorial milestone event in America’s history. We hope you enjoy reading this feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but

you will always have something to discuss over dinner.

Tourist season has begun. If $4 gasoline or body cavity searches by blue gloved TSA agents have dampened your family vacation plans, fire up your mini-van for an educational mini-trip closer to home. For example, Buffalo Jump State Park located southwest of Great Falls has a nice visitor center plus walking paths above and below the cliffs allowing you to perfectly visualize an 18th century bison harvest. The sweeping swell on top of this particular jump hides the cliff, so bison charging up the hill in the drags are blind to the fate of the leads disappearing over the horizon. Figuratively, bison and Americans are again gathering on top of the cliff, but it is the ironic twist to today’s slaughter which brings me to my point. This winter, under the cloak of darkness and against Montana Code, 60 bison were relocated from the quarantine facilities of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) to the Fort Peck Reservation along the Missouri Breaks. This is the second of a four step process to crush the republic and bring our populace into perfect dependence on big government—just as Karl Marx dreamed. If you missed steps one and two, you will likely refuse to acknowledge steps three and four, but I will explain them anyway. Step One: Whether Walt Disney was a cause or an effect is uncertain, but his personification of animals allowed activists to gift Bambi rights equal to those endowed us by our Creator. Simultaneously and incrementally, government schools began promoting the religion of environmentalism until eventually state sponsored worship of the earth and creation surpassed worship of our Creator. (If that last sentence made you winch, you see how deeply idolatry has infected the American soul.) Step Two: Fully indoctrinated Americans have deemed YNP bison as a genetically pure mascot worthy of worship as the golden calf. This May, our US Senate discussed legislation to designate the bison as our national mammal, while activists quietly acquired conservation easements and commandeered Montana water rights through the Clean Water Act. The noose of federal control quietly tightened around massive tracts of Montana’s Missouri Breaks, and just as planned, 60 YNP bison appeared on the Fort Peck Reservation. Step Three (Prediction): Like clockwork, YNP bison will overpopulate and escape their temporary home and within a decade, there will be thousands of bison ravaging The Breaks. Once Montanans discover the problem, it will be too late—just as it was with the introduction of the invasive species of the gray wolf. Step Four (Prediction): The world’s economy will grind to a halt due to instability in the Middle East driving the price of gasoline over $25 per gallon. In desperation, America will attempt to develop the massive Bakken oil reserves of Montana and North Dakota only to learn a future leftist president has issued a moratorium on all oil exploration to protect the habitat of our national mammal, the noble, YNP-origin, American Bison. Think about it. Our great American experiment in freedom is stampeding off a cliff. Surrounded by bison, there are American patriots in the lead hollering about this being a trap, but their screams are ignored as they disappear from view and ear shot over the horizon. Slaughter on the western plains has come full circle.
