Lump Sum vs. Dollar Cost Averaging: Which Is Better? Some people go swimming by diving into the pool; others prefer to edge into the water gradually, especially if the water’s cold. A decision about putting money into an investment can be somewhat similar. Is it best to invest your money all at once, putting a lump sum into something you believe will do well? Or should you invest smaller amounts regularly over time to try to minimize the risk that you might invest at precisely the wrong moment? Periodic investing and lump-sum investing both have their advocates. Understanding the merits and drawbacks of each can help you make a more informed decision. What is dollar cost averaging? Periodic investing is the process of making regular investments on an ongoing basis (for example, buying 100 shares of stock each month for a year). Dollar cost averaging is one of the most common forms of periodic investing. It involves continuous investment of the same dollar amount into a security at predetermined intervals--usually monthly, quarterly, or annually--regardless of the investment’s fluctuating price levels. Because you’re investing the same amount of money each time when you dollar cost average, you’re automatically buying more shares of a security when its share price is low, and fewer shares when its price is high. Over time, this strategy can provide an average cost per share that’s lower than the average market price (though it can’t guarantee a profit or protect against a loss in a declining market). The accompanying graph illustrates how share price fluctuations can yield a lower average cost per share through dollar cost averaging. In this hypothetical example, ABC Company’s stock price is $30 a share in January, $10 a share in February, $20 a share in March, $15 a share in April, and $25 a share in May. If you invest $300 a month for 5 months, the number of shares you would buy each month would range from 10 shares when the price is at a peak of $30 to 30 shares when the price is only $10. The average market price is $20 a share ($30+$10+$20+$15+$25 = $100 divided by 5 = $20). However, because your $300 bought more shares at the lower share prices, the average purchase price is $17.24 ($300 x 5 months = $1,500 invested divided by 87 shares purchased = $17.24). The merits of dollar cost averaging In addition to potentially lowering the average cost per share, investing a predetermined amount regularly automates your decision-making, and can help take emotion out of your investment decisions. And if your goal is to buy low and sell high, as it should be, dollar cost averaging brings some discipline to that process. Though it can’t help you know when to sell, and your shares could be worth more or less than their original cost when you do sell, this strategy can help you pursue the “buy low” portion of the equation. Also, many people don’t have a lump sum to invest all at once; any investments come out of their income stream--for example, as contributions to their workplace retirement savings account. In such cases, dollar cost averaging may not only be an easy strategy; it may be the most realistic option. The case for investing a lump sum Maybe you’re considering rolling over an IRA or have just received a pension payout. Perhaps you’ve inherited a large amount of money, or the mail-order sweepstakes’ prize patrol has finally shown up at your door. You might be thinking about the best way to shift your asset allocation or how to invest the proceeds of a certificate of deposit. Or maybe you’ve been parking some money in cash alternatives and now want to invest it. In cases like these, you may want to at least investigate the merits of lump-sum investing. Several academic studies have compared dollar cost averaging to lump-sum investing and concluded that, because markets have risen over the long term in the past, investing in the market today tends to be better than waiting until tomorrow, since you have a longer opportunity to benefit from any increase in prices over time. For example, a 2009 study by the Association of Investment Companies found that an investor who put a lump sum into the average British investment company at the end of April 2008 (talk about bad timing!) would have been down 30% one year later. Someone who invested the same total amount divided over 12 months would have been down only 7%. However, when the study examined the previous 5 years rather than a single year, the lump-sum investment made in April 2004 would have been up 26% by April 2009, compared to the periodic investment strategy’s loss of 10% over the same time. Several U.S. studies over several decades reviewed overall stock market performance and reached a similar conclusion: the longer your time frame, the greater the odds that a lump-sum investment will outperform dollar cost averaging. Considerations about dollar cost averaging • Think about whether you’ll be able to continue your investing program during a down market. The return and principal value of stocks fluctuate with changes in market conditions. If you stop when prices are low, you’ll lose much of the benefit of dollar cost averaging. Consider both your financial and emotional ability to continue making purchases through periods of low and high price levels. Plan ahead for how you’ll manage the temptation to stop investing when the chips are down. • The cost benefits of dollar cost averaging tend to diminish a bit over very long periods of time, because time alone also can help average out the market’s ups and downs. • Don’t forget to consider the cost of transaction fees, which can mount up over time with periodic investing. Considerations about investing a lump sum • The lump-sum studies reflect the long-term historical direction of the stock market since record-keeping began in 1925. That doesn’t mean the markets will behave in the future as they have in the past, or that there won’t be extended periods in which stock prices don’t rise. Even if they do move up, they may not do so immediately and forever once you invest. • Even if you don’t have a large lump sum to invest now, you may be able to save smaller amounts and invest the total in a lump sum later. However, many people simply aren’t disciplined enough to keep their hands off that money. Unless the money is invested automatically, you may be more tempted to spend your savings rather than investing them, or skip a month--or two or three. • Even seasoned investors have difficulty timing the market, so ignoring fluctuations and continuing to invest regularly may still be an improvement over postponing a decision indefinitely while you wait for the “right time” to invest. • Don’t forget that a lump sum invested in a single security inherently involves more risk than a lump sum put into a more diversified portfolio, regardless of your time frame. In the end, deciding between lump-sum investing and dollar cost averaging illustrates the classic risk-reward tradeoff that all investments entail. Even if you’re convinced a lump-sum investment might produce a higher net return over time, are you comfortable with the uncertainty and level of risk involved? Or are you increasing the odds that you won’t be able to handle short-term losses--especially if they occur shortly after you invest your lump sum--and sell at the wrong time? It’s important to know yourself and your limitations as an investor. Understanding the pros and cons of each approach can help you make the decision that best suits your personality and circumstances. Of course, once you turn 65, you’ll be eligible for Medicare. You’ll want to contact the Social Security Administration approximately three months before your 65th birthday to discuss your options. Here’s a recipe for clam chowder that makes a really good cold-weather meal. Clams are a good source of iodine, a nutrient that most of us landlubbers don’t get enough of. Including more food from the sea would be a healthy choice. Foods like chowders and soups are a good choice to help us lower our calorie intake by satisfying our hunger with flavorful liquids that provide fewer calories than solid food. This chowder would be even better if you could find fresh clams. If you use fresh clams, you would need at least two pounds of shucked clams. Cut them into small pieces and with an additional bottle of clam juice bring to a boil and cook for at least 1 hour to tenderize. Then follow the recipe except for the canned clams. This is a large batch so there will be leftovers, but it’s better the next day and it freezes well. This is a New England style chowder. I have yet to find a Boston style chowder (with tomatoes as a base) that I like. If any of you have one that you really like, I’d be interested in seeing it. 4- 10 oz. cans clams 1- 6 oz. bottle Clam juice 1- lb. Bacon 2- oz. Butter 2- Tbsp. flour 4- stalks of Celery 1- medium Onion 1- small Green Pepper 5- medium Potatoes 1- qt. Half-and-half or whipping cream 2- Tbsp. dry parsley

Put clams with clam juice in a large stockpot on medium-low heat. Cut bacon into small pieces and fry on medium-high heat until cooked but not crisp. Lower heat to low, add butter and flour, stirring constantly until flour is well incorporated. You can add a little additional flour if needed to absorb all of the bacon grease and butter (you don’t want to brown the flour, so keep the heat low) then add to clams. Dice celery, onion, green pepper and potatoes, and add to Clams with just barely enough water or additional clam juice to cover. Cover and simmer (slow simmer) for 30 minutes. When vegetables are cooked add half-and-half, or whipping cream and parsley. Don’t be afraid of the extra fat in whipping cream; it’s good healthy animal fat. Cook just a little longer to incorporate the flavor into the cream. Season to taste with your favorite seasoning salt. (Old Bay is a good choice.) If you like a little livelier flavor, Cayenne pepper is a healthy choice.

Trust me, if you buy a home with a ton of debt hanging over your heads, Murphy will move into your spare bedroom and make your lives miserable. If it can happen, it will happen. And that’s especially true when it comes to buying a house when you don’t have much cash on hand. You’re telling me you can save nearly $50,000 by next year. That means you guys are making pretty good money. So there’s no reason you can’t turn around and do the same thing next year, right? I mean, this is only a one- or two-year program we’re talking about. In another year’s time, you could save up for a huge down payment with some extra savings on the side. If you waited and saved for two years, there’s a possibility you could pay cash for a bigger place outright. Imagine how cool it would be to have your own home with no mortgage payments! Just clean up the extra bedroom and fix it up as a nice nursery. Some new carpet or hardwood is always nice. Throw in a fresh coat of paint, and you’re in business. Then, a year or two after the new baby arrives, you’ll be ready to move from a financial and a family perspective. A baby can live just fine in a small bedroom. American Garage, LLC The American Garage story is one that started decades ago and has fairly exploded in recent years. It all began in a little place downtown Chinook where Precision Auto Body is now located. Then-owners Weirmiller & Patterson sold Willys Knight and Overland cars out of that facility. Now the story diverges a bit, coming to the beginning of the 21st century with a young couple pursuing a career in the mechanics business. Scott DePriest, having grown up in the family business DePriest GMC, had received his received his Associate’s Degree in the General Motors Automotive Service Education Program in Twin Falls, Idaho. He and his wife Heather opened their business in the former Circle K food store on Main Street in July of 2006, borrowing their namesake from the previous Chinook establishment. They started with one employee and grew from there. In 2011, they began renovations to the former DePriest GMC building located on US Highway 2 and moved into the remodeled facility in December of that year. The remodel allowed the couple to expand their business, providing more adequate parking and additional work bays which meant room to hire more mechanics. Today, they have 10 dedicated individuals on board. She is also on a community planning board for Bear Paw Development, the Committee for Preservation and Development of Bear Paw Battlefield, and is actively involved in the production of many town events, including the Parade of Lights, Sugarbeet Festival, preschool events and fundraisers, Blaine County Fair, community development programs, and she helps write grants for different organizations. She’s proud that Chinook now has a Visitor Center and that the town was able to purchase a large number of tables and chairs for community use. She feels it’s important to help different groups work together toward the same goal of keeping their community strong.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

We hope you enjoy reading this feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but

you will always have something to discuss over dinner.

It is Just a Dream Gracefully embraced by the shadows, and with her alluring flesh peeking through a thin negligee, she seductively slid across the satin sheets towards me. I could feel the warmth of her nearly naked body nestling against mine as she pressed her moist lips, full and hard, against my neck before passionately panting, “You’ve got a mess in the kitchen!” Okay, so it was a dream. The trophy wife was actually in a tee shirt and sweat pants, the sheets were mismatched cotton, and a cold elbow to my ribs is what drove home the point I had a “mess in the kitchen.” Here is what happened. I was so fascinated by the specimens we studied in vet school, I set out to boil, bleach and reassemble a complete skeleton of every species I would see in practice. (Yes, such items can be purchased commercially, but that is too easy, plus I was a poor college student.) My dog skeleton project came together without a hitch, but the cat was another story. Worrying the tiny domestic cat bones could make reassembly challenging, I found a mountain lion carcass. Unfortunately, the hunter who bagged the lion grew tired from tediously skinning the front paws, so he chopped off the rear feet with a hatchet and sent them along with the hide to the taxidermist. Thus, my beautiful, full-sized mountain lion skeleton had no rear paws. Three months after assembling my two-pawed lion, I was visiting the anatomy lab cooler when I discovered a fresh soon-to-be discarded pair of feet from a large Newfoundland. I wrapped and stuffed the paws in my book pack before peddling home to married student housing. Apparently, the sparkle of newness was wearing off our twoyear marriage, because my trophy wife did not share my enthusiasm for my good fortune. Standing in the kitchen and using my happy voice, I excitedly explained how I was going to match up the bones. Druann rolled her eyes and sighed. I plopped the feet in a crockpot we had received as a wedding gift and clicked it to “High.” (Crockpots were the hip wedding gifts in the ‘70s…another twist of fate) We ate dinner, studied and went to bed. Sometime during the night, the pot boiled over prompting the trophy wife to seductively elbow me in the ribs and announce the mess in the kitchen. Had I known “Low” was a more appropriate temperature, I would have selected it, but there were no cooking instructions for dog feet anywhere in the owner’s manual. Knowing such information would have prevented this catastrophe, so this brings me to my point. Just like every election cycle for the last 100 years, progressives claim all their new free stuff will be funded by taxing the rich. This too is a dream. With a 16 trillion dollar national debt, this spending spree has boiled over and is dripping off the kitchen counter, yet progressives refuse to shut off the crockpot. Like an elbow to the ribs did to me, a mathematical look at their dream should shock you wide awake. Using 2010 IRS figures, progressives could impose a 100 percent tax rate on American’s making over one million dollars per year (the evil rich) and still only raise enough money to fund government for 88 days, so who will pick up the tab for the remaining 277 days? You will. Obviously, “taxing the rich” is worse than a pipe dream, it is an outright lie. Progressivism dangerously enslaves both the rich and the poor; the rich by debt and the poor by dependency. When will the downtrodden realize they are being used? Government programs never help people out of poverty; instead handouts keep them there, exactly as designed. So once progressivism is fully implemented, only the ruling class will be golfing 25 times per year or taking repeated European vacations. You may be comfortable using the full power of the government to steal money from the producers so as to give freebies to the non-producers. I am not and neither were our founders which is why they established an American republic and not a democracy. Attention voters: Do not go back to sleep until you have cleaned up this mess.
