COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

It’s the day after Christmas and Santa did land The elves reappeared to give him a hand Mrs. Claus at the doorstep when Santa got home Attacking his beard with a brush and a comb She was whisking away every leftover crumb Then Santa drank whiskey that left him quite numb Then dozing to sleep and dreaming the dream Of each dish of cookies all smothered in cream He’s then shaking his fist and he’s picking at lice For he slid through the soot into vermin and mice Then Rudolph looked down in total disgust He uttered some words, old Santa did cuss The bats flew about as Santa, he hurried With D-Con delivered, the rodents they scurried From pig pens to palace, all parcels delivered He inhaled cookies, the reindeer just shivered Now the elves worm the reindeer and feed them some hay Old Santa zonked out, he’s down for the day Mrs. Claus said a prayer as he’s looking pathetic For the night took its’ toll as Santa’s diabetic.

IRA And RetIRement PlAn lImIts foR 2013 IRA contribution limits: The maximum amount you can contribute to a traditional IRA or Roth IRA in 2013 increases to $5,500 (or 100% of your earned income, if less), up from $5,000 in 2012. The maximum catch-up contribution for those age 50 or older remains at $1,000. (You can contribute to both a traditional and Roth IRA in 2013, but your total contributions can’t exceed this annual limit.) traditional IRA deduction limits for 2013: The income limits for determining the deductibility of traditional IRA contributions have also increased for 2013 (for those covered by employer retirement plans). For example, you can fully deduct your IRA contribution if your filing status is single/head of household, and your income (“modified adjusted gross income,” or MAGI) is $59,000 or less (up from $58,000 in 2012). If you’re married and filing a joint return, you can fully deduct your IRA contribution if your MAGI is $95,000 or less (up from $92,000 in 2012). If you’re not covered by an employer plan but your spouse is, and you file a joint return, you can fully deduct your IRA contribution if your MAGI is $178,000 or less (up from $173,000 in 2012) If your 2013 federal income tax filing status is: Your IRA deduction is reduced if your MAGI is between: Your deduction is eliminated if your MAGI is: Single or head of household $59,000 and $69,000 $69,000 or more Married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er)* $95,000 and $115,000 (combined) $115,000 or more (combined) Married filing separately $0 and $10,000 $10,000 or more *If you’re not covered by an employer plan but your spouse is, your deduction is limited if your MAGI is $178,000 to $188,000, and eliminated if your MAGI exceeds $188,000. Roth IRA contribution limits for 2013: The income limits for determining how much you can contribute to a Roth IRA have also increased. If your filing status is single/head of household, you can contribute the full $5,500 to a Roth IRA in 2013 if your MAGI is $112,000 or less (up from $110,000 in 2012). And if you’re married and filing a joint return, you can make a full contribution if your MAGI is $178,000 or less (up from $173,000 in 2012). (Again, contributions can’t exceed 100% of your earned income.) If your 2013 federal income tax filing status is: Single or head of household Married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er) Married filing separately

Your IRA contribution is reduced if your MAGI is between: You cannot contribute to a Roth IRA if your MAGI is: More than $112,000 but less than $127,000 $127,000 or more More than $178,000 but less than $188,000 (combined) $188,000 or more (combined) More than $0 but less than $10,000 $10,000 or more

employer retirement plans: The maximum amount you can contribute (your “elective deferrals”) to a 401(k) plan has increased for 2013. The limit (which also applies to 403(b), 457(b), and SAR-SEP plans, as well as the Federal Thrift Plan) is $17,500 in 2013 (up from $17,000 in 2012). If you’re age 50 or older, you can also make catch-up contributions of up to $5,500 to these plans in 2013 (unchanged from 2012). (Special catch-up limits apply to certain participants in 403(b) and 457(b) plans.) If you participate in more than one retirement plan, your total elective deferrals can’t exceed the annual limit ($17,500 in 2013 plus any applicable catch-up contribution). Deferrals to 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, SIMPLE plans, and SAR-SEPs are included in this limit, but deferrals to Section 457(b) plans are not. For example, if you participate in both a 403(b) plan and a 457(b) plan, you can defer the full dollar limit to each plan--a total of $35,000 in 2013 (plus any catch-up contributions). The amount you can contribute to a SIMPLE IRA or SIMPLE 401(k) plan has increased to $12,000 for 2013, up from $11,500 in 2012. The catch-up limit for those age 50 or older remains unchanged at $2,500. Plan type: 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457(b), SAR-SEP, Federal Thrift Plan SIMPLE plans

Annual dollar limit: $17,500 $12,000

Catch-up limit: $5,500 $2,500

note: Contributions can’t exceed 100% of your income. The maximum amount that can be allocated to your account in a defined contribution plan (for example, a 401(k) plan or profit-sharing plan) in 2013 is $51,000 (up from $50,000 in 2012), plus age-50 catch-up contributions. (This includes both your contributions and your employer’s contributions. Special rules apply if your employer sponsors more than one retirement plan.) Finally, the maximum amount of compensation that can be taken into account in determining benefits for most plans has increased to $255,000, up from $250,000 in 2012; and the dollar threshold for determining highly compensated employees remains unchanged at $115,000. A firefighter is working on the engine outside the station when he notices a little girl next door in a little red wagon with little ladders hung off the side and a garden hose tightly coiled in the middle. The girl is wearing a firefighter’s helmet and has the wagon tied to a dog and cat. The firefighter walks over to take a closer look. “That sure is a nice fire truck,” the firefighter says with admiration. “Thanks,” the little girl says. The firefighter looks a little closer and notices the girl has tied the wagon to the dog’s collar and to the cat’s tail. “Little partner,” the firefighter says, “I don’t want to tell you how to run your fire truck, but if you were to tie that rope around the cat’s collar, I think you could go faster.” The little girl replied, “You’re probably right, but then I wouldn’t have a siren.” For Sale: Puppies! Food Poisoning

To start the New Year off I would like to talk about food poisoning. Before we get into the how and why of it let me explain some of my life’s experiences with food poisoning. I have never had anything more than a short bout of stomach cramps, vomiting or diarrhea, and I have never known anybody that had to be hospitalized because of food poisoning. I have butchered 100s of chickens, dozens of pigs, deer, elk, a couple of moose, a half dozen cows and100s of pounds of fish--nostly under less than ideal conditions. I drank raw cow’s milk (that I milked myself) up until I graduated from high school. I used manure on my garden and ate fresh vegetables without washing them. I never once realized that vegetables carry dangerous pathogens every bit as much, if not more than, raw meat. Now, as I research the numbers on food poisoning I find them hard to believe. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) estimate for 2011 was 48 million food poisoning illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. How could that many people get deathly sick while I have done everything in the book against recommendations and just barely got a stomach cramp? What this tells me is that by far most food poisoning occurrences depend on what happens in the kitchen. The Cook is the final arbiter of whether the pathogens that come with the food live or die. So, let’s concentrate on what it takes to control the germs in the kitchen. Refrigeration is our first helper, as enzymes and germs work very slowly at 35* To 40*, so what belongs in the fridge should be in the fridge and not on the counter. All fruits and vegetables should be washed under running water and dried before we put them in the fridge to help prevent cross contamination. Infectious germs on food will die in the freezer at 0* within two weeks, so freezing in vacuum packaging is one of the better ways to protect and preserve food for storage. Canning, if not done properly, poses the danger of botulism which is infection by the deadly botulinum toxin; just a few drops can kill within minutes. The toxin is odorless and it won’t smell bad. Therefore, if you open a can of anything that has discolored spots in it, don’t take a chance. Throw it out. If you would like to learn how to can correctly, there’s lots of good information that can be found online by searching for “canning fruits and vegetables”. Temperatures at or above 160* will kill all infectious germs, so a cooking thermometer is essential to safe cooking. Solid meat only has to reach 160* on the outside surface to kill pathogens, so you can still enjoy your Prime Rib rare. Ground meats should be cooked to 160* all the way through. (Sorry, guys, that’s just beyond pink.) You consume raw milk and raw seed sprouts at your own risk because there is no way you can produce them guaranteed pathogen free. If pasteurized or cooked they are safe. Cooked vegetables and fruits are no problem (keeping in mind 160*), but raw veggies and fruits pose a new problem. You can’t decontaminate them with a simple cold water rinse. Fruits and veggies tossed in a fresh salad with a vinegar based dressing will be ok because the acid in the vinegar will kill most pathogens. Peeling is recommended to decontaminate fruits and veggies, but, in my opinion, it really isn’t effective because you contaminate your hand holding the unpeeled fruit, and as you peel around the fruit you transfer germs to the peeled surface. Additionally, you lose a lot of good nutrition by peeling. I would recommend a quick vinegar dip made with ¼ cup vinegar to 1 quart water, and don’t wipe it off because the acid needs several minutes to do its job. Last, but most important, wash all cooking utensils in hot soapy water. (Let them soak a little; remember; it takes a few minutes to kill all germs.) Clean all surfaces that come in contact with food with a strong 25/75 blend disinfectant (vinegar, bleach or hydrogen peroxide) and water. That includes your fridge, too, and don’t wipe it off--let the disinfectant work. If you have a better way, I’d love to share it. Email bhake@mtintouch.net or snail mail Bill’s Food Corner, PO Box 81, Turner, MT 59542.

DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

Dear Dave, I’m trying to help my son and daughter-in-law by encouraging them to get out of debt and live on a budget. It hasn’t been a problem to give them money when they’ve asked in the past, but I’m afraid they’re still in a mess. How can I make sure I’m doing the right thing? ~Margaret Dear Margaret, The first thing you need to do is sit down and have a serious, loving talk with them. If they’ve asked for money before, and it has become something of a trend, you have a right to know more about their circumstances. In addition, they need to understand that opening up and being honest about their situation and behavior is a requirement for them to receive more of your help. I know you guys love each other, but be prepared for them to get defensive. Lots of times people are embarrassed to talk about their mistakes, no matter how nicely you approach things. They may decide not to answer any questions and that it’s none of your business. That’s fine, too. Just make sure they understand Mom won’t open her checkbook unless they open up about their finances. This isn’t about you being nosy or controlling. It’s about making sure you’re not giving a drunk a drink and further enabling any misbehavior. Then, if they’re willing to talk, and as a result, you feel they truly need help, make sure any money you give them is a gift, not a loan. I know it hurts to see them go through rough times, Margaret. But if they’re acting irresponsibly with money, they need to suffer the consequences of their actions. That, along with your love and advice, can help them turn the corner and win with money! ~Dave Dear Dave, I have one bill left from an emergency room visit earlier this year, and I’m trying to settle with a collections agency. They’re willing to accept half of the $930 owed, but they want me to pay online or by phone, and I don’t feel safe doing that. What should I do? ~Allison Dear Allison, If they’re willing to lower the bill by half, then you need to get that in writing. If you don’t have it in writing, you don’t have a deal. And whatever you do, don’t give them any form of electronic access to your money. I’ve seen too many collectors lie to people about “agreements,” then go in and raid their accounts. Just tell them to send you, by email or regular letter, a statement saying that $465 will be accepted as payment in full for the debt. Also, tell them you’ll turn around the day you receive this letter and send them a cashier’s check for that amount. Until then, they can go jump in the lake! ~Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He’s authored four New York Times best-selling books: Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover and EntreLeadership. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 5 million listeners each week on more than 500 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58

We hope you enjoy reading this feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but

you will always have something to discuss over dinner.

It Is Time For the second Sunday morning in a row, I cooked breakfast on our wood stove. The crackling fire filled the house with the wonderful aroma of sizzling bacon and boiling coffee. I stuffed another stick of oak in the fire box, and sipped my coffee as I quietly stared out the window at the winter countryside. The sun’s rays breaking across the Yellowstone valley illuminating the snowy peaks of the Beartooth range were beautiful testimony of God’s creation, putting my tiny presence in humbling perspective. We may not all be believers, but He is here and has had a plan for America since our founding. Look at His tracks. If not for God’ hand, General Washington’s 1776 Christmas Day surprise attack across the Delaware River would have been our final defeat in America’s brief quest for independence. Yet, because it was His will, the victory at Trenton was ours. Man’s timeline is much different than God’s, so this did not end our struggle. He never said freedom would be easy, only worth it, and American patriots suffered six more years before the prize of liberty had been fully earned. The Christmas of 1777 found Washington’s forces in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, in much the same predicament as they were in 1776—cold and starving. Any rational assessment revealed it was simply a matter of time before the Continental Army would disband and go home. The Continental Congress had long since abandoned Philadelphia to the Brittish and they ignored General Washington’s repeated pleas for help. This Christmas he sat in his cold tent and penned his resignation, but before Washington could

sign his letter, a ruckus in a nearby field jolted him out into the cold, snowy darkness. Could it be the mutiny of which his officers warned? As he walked from campfire to campfire he was greeted with shouts of “Hail to our Chief! May liberty prevail!” How could this be? What possessed these soldiers to press for freedom when their very sustenance was in question? With nothing else to offer his emaciated troops, General Washington declared “May God relieve your sufferings, if Congress will not. And a good Christmas to you!” He returned to his tent and tossed his letter into the fire. The Holy Spirit was alive and well in Valley Forge on Christmas Day of 1777. After 235 years, the freedom purchased by the sufferings of those early American patriots is traded away for free condoms, free health care, free food stamps and free cellphones. The masses are indoctrinated to worship big government as the true god and believe utopia is but one new program away. They are wrong. The recent tragedy in a kindergarten class in Connecticut shows America has lost her soul. There is but one King, and He is not in Washington D.C. If there were ever a Christmas when America needed open their hearts to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, it is now.
