Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

Procrastination and Patience

My older brother, Dana, may be the world’s greatest procrastinator; a title I hesitantly bequeath mostly because I am a chicken and I know he reads this column. He and Alice had been married a few years when two sons arrived and filled the vast openness of their one bedroom apartment at the ranch. Alice soon learned being a ranch wife is not as rosy as being a regular city wife. Several years prior, the water pipes froze and burst in the laundry room so they had been plugged and abandoned. Every day, Alice dutifully hauled clothes baskets back and forth across the driveway to the washer and dryer in the main house; an acceptable arrangement in an emergency, but not a long term solution.

Alice’s parents empathized with her laundry labors, so one Christmas morning under her tree Alice found a brand new washer and dryer. Apparently, Alice holds appliances closer to her heart than normal wives because the shiny white Whirlpools brought tears to her eyes. Who ever said diamonds were a girl’s best friend never hauled their laundry across the driveway to their in-laws on a cold Wyoming morning. The washer and dryer were shuffled into the basement so they could be immediately placed in service once the laundry room had been re-plumbed. Time passed…

actually an unbelievable amount of time. Days turned to weeks, to months, to two years when I asked Dana, “Are you ever going to get those out of their boxes?”

“Someday,” he replied. “You see, I only do one project per year and I want Alice to be positive this is the one she really wants done this year.” I was speechless. Dana had always prided himself on not sweating the small stuff and apparently Alice hauling laundry fell squarely into the small stuff category. The washer and dryer sat in their boxes until Dana, Alice and now three sons moved to their own place down on the Tongue River. Obviously, Alice’s patience places her solidly in the trophy wife category, while Dana’s ability to ignore a problem makes him a super star in the procrastinator’s hall of fame and now to my point.

Progressives are purposely destroying our republic; enslaving the producers in debt and the non-producers in dependency. Marxism has been euphemistically labeled liberalism, progressivism, or compassionate conservatism and it infected America in the early 1900s. It has spread everywhere and shows no sign of stopping. For example, in the face of a 17 trillion dollar national debt, the very legislation restarting the government which was shut down due to Obamacare and the debt ceiling contained even more

new giveaways. Taxpayers did not feel a sting because the new spending was Monopoly money; debt placed on the backs of generations not yet born. Now let me poke you with a sharp stick.

Progressives fall into two categories; rulers and ruled. If you are a progressive because your daddy, granddaddy, and great-granddaddy were progressives, but are uncertain to which category you fit, trust me, you are the ruled. It is like this: If you receive Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, ethanol subsidies, payments to not produce a crop, or have a guaranteed student loan you are the ruled. Government controls your very existence and you will do as you are told or a jerk on your purse strings will bring you into compliance. Progressives can be either Democrats, establishment Republicans, or responsible Republicans if you live in Montana. They simply love being rulers.

At the liberty end of the spectrum is the Tea Party and Republicans who hold true to the Constitution and their Oath of Office. They are the ones who will save our great experiment in freedom, but they need your help. Procrastination or patience is fine when addressing plumbing issues, but not when the celestial article of freedom is threatened. If there is a Tea Party in your community, join it. If not, form it.

IRA ANd RETIREMENT PlAN lIMITs foR 2014

IRA contribution limits The maximum amount you can contribute to a traditional IRA or Roth IRA in 2014 remains unchanged at $5,500 (or 100% of your earned income, if less). The maximum catch-up contribution for those age 50 or older in 2014 is $1,000, also unchanged from 2013. (You can contribute to both a traditional and Roth IRA in 2014, but your total contributions can’t exceed this annual limit.)

Traditional IRA deduction limits for 2014 The income limits for determining the deductibility of traditional IRA contributions have increased for 2014 (for those covered by employer retirement plans). For example, you can fully deduct your IRA contribution if your filing status is single/head of household, and your income (“modified adjusted gross income,” or MAGI) is $60,000 or less (up from $59,000 in 2013). If you’re married and filing a joint return, you can fully deduct your IRA contribution if your MAGI is $96,000 or less (up from $95,000 in 2013). If you’re not covered by an employer plan but your spouse is, and you file a joint return, you can fully deduct your IRA contribution if your MAGI is $181,000 or less (up from $178,000 in 2013).

(Again, contributions can’t exceed 100% of your earned income.)

Employer Retirement Plans The maximum amount you can contribute (your “elective deferrals”) to a 401(k) plan in 2014 remains unchanged at $17,500.

The limit also applies to 403(b), 457(b), and SAR-SEP plans, as well as the Federal Thrift Savings Plan. If you’re age 50 or older, you can also make catch-up contributions of up to $5,500 to these plans in 2014 (unchanged from 2013). (Special catch-up limits apply to certain participants in 403(b) and 457(b) plans.)

If you participate in more than one retirement plan, your total elective deferrals can’t exceed the annual limit ($17,500 in 2014 plus any applicable catch-up contribution). Deferrals to 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, SIMPLE plans, and SAR-SEPs are included in this limit, but deferrals to Section 457(b) plans are not. For example, if you participate in both a 403(b) plan and a 457(b) plan, you can defer the full dollar limit to each plan--a total of $35,000 in 2014 (plus any catchup contributions).

The amount you can contribute to a SIMPLE IRA or SIMPLE 401(k) plan in 2014 is $12,000, unchanged from 2013. The catch-up limit for those age 50 or older also remains unchanged at $2,500.

Did you hear about the teacher who was helping one of her pupils put on his boots?

She almost cried when the little boy said, “Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.” She looked, and sure enough, they were.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as, together, they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the correct feet.

He then announced, “These aren’t my boots.”

She bit her tongue, rather than get right in his face and scream, “Why didn’t you say so?” like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet.No sooner had they got the boots off when he said, “They’re my brother’s boots. But my Mom made me wear ‘em today.”

Now she didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. But she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots BACK onto his feet again.

Helping him into his coat, she asked, “Now, where are your mittens?”

He said, “I stuffed ‘em in the toes of my boots.”

Do employer contributions count toward the 15 percent you recommend putting into retirement?

Employer contributions do not count toward the 15 percent I recommend setting aside for retirement. It’s nice if you work for a company that offers perks like that, but I want you putting 15 percent of your money into retirement.

Baby Step 4 of my plan says to put 15 percent of your income into retirement accounts. The first thing you should put money into is a matching retirement account. If you’ve got a 401(k), a Roth 401(k) or a 403(b) and your employer offers a match, you should do that up to the match before anything else.

Let’s say your employer will match three percent. Since the goal is 15 percent, you’ve still got some work to do. You’ve got three percent of your own money already tied up for retirement, so then you could look at a Roth IRA. If the Roth plus what you invested previously to get the match doesn’t equal 15 percent, you could then look at a 403(b) or go back to your 401(k) to hit the 15 percent mark.

Whatever your company matches, whatever its pension may be or even military retirement does not enter into the equation. I want your money in your name. If your company goes broke and you have a company pension, you get nothing. But if you have a 401(k) and your company dies, it’s in your name and you don’t lose it. You put it there, you own it. And that includes the match.

One of the best things you can do is simply talk about it—a lot. Kids are bombarded with messages about how important they are, and how they should always have what they want. It’s okay to have some stuff, but advertising and other marketing messages in today’s culture can make them think it’s all about them. It can lead kids to believe the axis of the world runs through the tops of their little heads.

Think about this. In 1971, the average person saw 564 advertising impressions a day. Now, that number is about 4,000. The purpose of advertising is to disturb and influence you to the point that you’ll buy something. Advertisers want you to believe that you’re not complete without their product, or that you’ll be a happier, cooler, better person with their product. And in most cases, advertising and marketing people are more aggressive in their teaching than parents are in theirs.

My suggestion is to find some giving exercises in which you can all participate. You could adopt a single mom at your church. Make it a family outing, and go buy groceries, gifts for her kids or even a Christmas tree. Make sure your kids are involved physically, mentally and emotionally in the entire giving process. Let them experience the grateful, and sometimes ungrateful, responses that go along with giving. And make sure you do some things that don’t involve money. You could take the entire family to help cook and serve dinner at a homeless shelter.

One of the best things we ever did as parents with our teenagers was to send them on mission trips. It truly changed their lives. When you see real poverty close up, when you live and walk and sleep in it day after day—I’m talking about death-and-disease poverty, not the American version—it changes your heart. And when you’re 13, it will change your life forever. ~Dave

‘TIS (ALMOST) THE SEASON!

Cowboy Christmas is right around the corner. I’m not talking about that part of summer where cowboys and cowgirls hit the rodeo circuit hard to enter as many rodeos as possible to help their standings. Instead, I’m talking about the 14th Annual Rodeo Cowboy Christmas fundraiser for the Montana State University-Northern Rodeo Team on December 7th. The boosters put on this event not only to raise money for the Rodeo Program but also to allow attendees an opportunity to meet-n-greet the team’s coaches and athletes. Overwhelming support for the rodeo team comes from the Hi-Line communities.

For those who have not been attended a Cowboy Christmas in the past, this year will once again afford folks lots of fun in supporting the MSU-N rodeo program and the student athletes who participate. The Boosters have packed the night full of entertainment and food. The MSU-Northern SUB Ballroom doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a poker game, and horse races start shortly thereafter. The no-host bar opens at that same time. On the menu this year is prime rib and shrimp, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The price is right at only $35 a person or $60 a couple and starting this year, for $240 you can get a reserved table for six that includes a complementary bottle of wine. Silent and live auction items will be up for bid during and after dinner, and various raffles will be held.

Then, after the auction action has quieted down it’ll be time for attendees to kick up their heels and dance.

The money raised by the Boosters goes directly to help the rodeo team, usually for practice and travel expenses or scholarships. This, in part, helps draw talented student athletes to Havre and continue the strong legacy that is MSU-N Rodeo.

Tickets are available at Norman’s RanchWear or from Karene Faber at Independence Bank. The 2013 event promises to once again be a great way to spend a Saturday night in December. So, call the babysitter, get dressed up and I’ll see you in the stands…ummm…at the SUB! “Diets, diets everywhere but not one that works.” It seems like you can’t turn a page in a magazine, open a website or watch TV without running into an ad for a wonder diet that will melt those extra pounds overnight. Believe me; they are all designed to lighten your pocketbook more than your body.

Any diet plan that overly restricts fats or proteins could have serious health repercussions down the road. The body needs all three food groups—fats, proteins and complex carbohydrates—in balance to stay healthy. Any plan that claims weight loss without exercise is a downright fraud. A diet plan that promises rapid weight loss is guaranteed to fail because it works against the nature of the human body. The body is programmed to maintain its current condition, (it’s called homeostasis) and it will work extra hard to gain back any weight that is lost quickly. A slow stable weight loss is the easiest to maintain. Spending money on a diet plan might give you the added incentive to try harder to get your money’s worth but controlling your weight is accomplished by the same simple process, (I said “simple” not “easy”) regardless of how much or how little you pay for the information.

Let me give it to you for free. “Burn more calories than you consume.” That’s not all there is to it, but that is the foundation that healthy weight control has to start from. Muscle is the major calorie burner for the body and the pump that delivers life giving nutrition to every cell in the body. Muscle is built with exercise from the protein in our diet. Animal protein is the perfect protein, because it contains all 22 amino acids necessary to build muscle, especially the 8 essential amino acids that are less common in vegetable protein. So, the more exercise and quality protein we fit into our diet plan, the more muscle we build, and the more calories we burn. If you have any doubts about what type of exercise to perform, I would recommend you spend some time with a physical therapist, as they will tailor a program just for you. It will be time and money well spent.

Also, I have a test. It is quick, easy and reliable. First, stand up straight in front of a wall, and slowly walk your way up to the wall. If any part of your body touches the wall before your nose, you need an exercise plan. Now, here’s a protein recipe for your busy lifestyle.

Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Put a roast in the crock pot. It can be beef or pork, but it should be small enough to fit in the crock and large enough to feed your family with leftovers. Now, cover it with 10 oz. cans of condensed soup (no water added). Depending on the size of the roast it might take 3 or more cans. The type of soup is your choice. I like Cream of Chicken, Cream of Celery and Cream of Mushroom, mixed. Set crock pot for 6 hours on low or 4 hours on high. If you have an extra large roast you might add an extra hour to your time. The last hour you might want to adjust the gravy thickness with a little red wine or chicken broth if it’s too thick; or if it’s too thin leave the lid ajar so the vapor can escape. If you are the experimentive type you can add onions or mushrooms alongside the roast, dried onion soup mix to the soup, and you can top it all with dried herbs like Parsley, Basil, Thyme or Rosemary. Serve it with a dollop of sour cream on top, if you prefer. Keep in mind, none of these are necessary, but they add a little kick to an already good pot roast.

That was quick and easy, now you have time for a brisk 2 mile walk. I said brisk walk, not jog. You don’t want to ruin those knees.
