COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
A SCORE AND FOUR In Montana December, it’s well you should know Why the cars go so slow and the walkers so fast, Why the heat, overnight, in your cabin won’t last Now our Indian Summer is finally past, When it’s twenty (and four more) below.
Please enjoy this guest submission from Mr. D.W. Mailand of Harlem, Montana.
Don’t say “Got up and went” took your “Get up and go”. Just go do outdoor chores as you know that you should. You are free to complain, but it won’t do much good So you might think to fetch one more armload of wood For it’s twenty (and four more) below. Blame the weather forecaster, that wise So-and-So, When the hinge on your screendoor protests with a scream And you’re sure “Global Warming” is somebody’s dream Although everyone out there is letting off steam, It’s still twenty (and four more) below. But our winter just started, with four months to go, So enjoy how our world has gone muffled and still. Don’t mind frost under the door and around windowsill. When you think minus twenty is serious chill, Well, old-timers certainly want you to know that, With and without the winds that blow, and Not so many years ago It’s been fifty (and counting) below. ~D.W. Mailand for “Tricia’s Trader” ©2013

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58
Cow Doctor Myth Busters
The garage thermometer read 22 degrees below zero when the trophy wife and yours truly sprinted into the darkness for our early morning run. With the shortest day of the year a couple weeks away, we will be home eating breakfast before the sun peeks over the horizon. This frigid time of year separates real runners from pretenders who wear spandex in public just to embarrass their children. Contrary to the conventional wisdom about freezing your lungs by running in below zero temperatures, here is an adaptation of an old saying which busts the myth: “Each morning when the cold winter sun rises over the eastern plains of Montana, the coyote knows it must run faster than the slowest rabbit or it will starve. Likewise, when the sun comes up the rabbit knows it must run faster than the fastest coyote or it will be eaten. The moral to the story being it does not matter whether you are a coyote or a rabbit, when the sun comes up you had better be running.” Nowhere in the adage does it mention either the coyote or
the bunny freezing their lungs because it does not happen. This falsehood is as widespread as the myth knee arthritis is caused by running. If I were truly immune to public opinion, I would reveal the most common cause of acquired osteoarthritis, but I am not, so I won’t. Now, I’ll jump to my next myth. It is probably just a coincidence, but this May after finishing Montana’s 63rd Legislative Session, digging a new hole for my outhouse was at the top of my to-do list. Reseating the outhouse is not as romantic as it sounds, so digging a deep hole extends the time before you have to do it again. Business consultants call this long-range planning. My enthusiasm disappeared after four feet of chipping at the hard, dry clay; an oddity for springtime in Montana. Had I waited and dug my outhouse in September, one of the wettest on record, I could have passed through the six foot mark and still been in wet clay so soft you could dig it with a spoon. Unfortunately, you will need a knife or fork to scrape gumbo off your spoon,
so there is never an easy time to re-set a Montana outhouse. Because my two-holer uses no water or electricity, nonsensical climate change alarmists would consider it a green appliance; something I can use without worrying about the size of my carbon foot print. While hammering at the dried gumbo with my post bar I thought how Al Gore would blame these desert conditions on man caused global warming which can only be reversed by taking money from those who have earned it and giving it to those who have not, less a small handling fee for the ruling class. Why do people believe this leftist crap? This wealth redistribution myth, euphemistically called a carbon tax, cannot be busted using logic because followers of this state sponsored religion are immune to scientific fact. Instead, they feel things. ccept their ideology, and the government will use tax policy to make every day “feel” like the perfect day to dig a new hole for your outhouse.

Just what you need, right? One more time-consuming task to be taken care of between now and the end of the year. But taking a little time out from the holiday chores to make some strategic saving and investing decisions before December 31 can affect not only your long-term ability to meet your financial goals but also the amount of taxes you’ll owe next April. Look at the forest, not just the trees The first step in your year-end investment planning process should be a review of your overall portfolio. That review can tell you whether you need to rebalance. If one type of investment has done well--for example, large-cap stocks--it might now represent a greater percentage of your portfolio than you originally intended. To rebalance, you would sell some of that asset class and use that money to buy other types of investments to bring your overall allocation back to an appropriate balance. Your overall review should also help you decide whether that rebalancing should be done before or after December 31 for tax reasons. Also, make sure your asset allocation is still appropriate for your time horizon and goals. You might consider being a bit more aggressive if you’re not meeting your financial targets, or more conservative if you’re getting closer to retirement. If you want greater diversification, you might consider adding an asset class that tends to react to market conditions differently than your existing investments do. Or you might look into an investment that you have avoided in the past because of its high valuation if it’s now selling at a more attractive price. Diversification and asset allocation don’t guarantee a profit or insure against a possible loss, of course, but they’re worth reviewing at least once a year. Know when to hold ‘em When contemplating a change in your portfolio, don’t forget to consider how long you’ve owned each investment. Assets held for a year or less generate short-term capital gains, which are taxed as ordinary income. Depending on your tax bracket, your ordinary income tax rate could be much higher than the long-term capital gains rate, which applies to the sale of assets held for more than a year. For example, as of tax year 2013, the top marginal tax rate is 39.6%, which applies to any annual taxable income over $400,000 ($450,000 for married individuals filing jointly). By contrast, the long-term capital gains rate owed by taxpayers in the 39.6% tax bracket is 20%. For most investors--those in tax brackets between 25% and 35%--long-term capital gains are taxed at 15%; taxpayers in the lowest tax brackets--15% or less--are taxed at 0% on any long-term capital gains. (Long-term gains on collectibles are different; those are taxed at 28%.) Your holding period can also affect the treatment of qualified stock dividends, which are taxed at the more favorable long-term capital gains rates. You must have held the stock at least 61 days within the 121-day period that starts 60 days before the stock’s ex-dividend date; preferred stock must be held for 91 days within a 181-day window. The lower rate also depends on when and whether your shares were hedged or optioned. Make lemonade from lemons Now is the time to consider the tax consequences of any capital gains or losses you’ve experienced this year. Though tax considerations shouldn’t be the primary driver of your investing decisions, there are steps you can take before the end of the year to minimize any tax impact of your investing decisions. If you have realized capital gains from selling securities at a profit (congratulations!) and you have no tax losses carried forward from previous years, you can sell losing positions to avoid being taxed on some or all of those gains. Any losses over and above the amount of your gains can be used to offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income ($1,500 for a married person filing separately) or carried forward to reduce your taxes in future years. Selling losing positions for the tax benefit they will provide next April is a common financial practice known as “harvesting your losses.” Example: You sold stock in ABC company this year for $2,500 more than you paid when you bought it four years ago. You decide to sell the XYZ stock that
you bought six years ago because it seems unlikely to regain the $20,000 you paid for it. You sell your XYZ shares at a $7,000 loss. You offset your $2,500 capital gain, offset $3,000 of ordinary income tax this year, and carry forward the remaining $1,500 to be applied in future tax years. Time any trades appropriately If you’re selling to harvest losses in a stock or mutual fund and intend to repurchase the same security, make sure you wait at least 31 days before buying it again. Otherwise, the trade is considered a “wash sale,” and the tax loss will be disallowed. The wash sale rule also applies if you buy an option on the stock, sell it short, or buy it through your spouse within 30 days before or after the sale. If you have unrealized losses that you want to capture but still believe in a specific investment, there are a couple of strategies you might think about. If you want to sell but don’t want to be out of the market for even a short period, you could sell your position at a loss, then buy a similar exchange-traded fund (ETF) that invests in the same asset class or industry. Or you could double your holdings, then sell your original shares at a loss after 31 days. You’d end up with the same position, but would have captured the tax loss. If you’re buying a mutual fund in a taxable account, find out when it will distribute any dividends or capital gains. Consider delaying your purchase until after that date, which often is near year-end. If you buy just before the distribution, you’ll owe taxes this year on that money, even if your own shares haven’t appreciated. And if you plan to sell a fund anyway, you may minimize taxes by selling before the distribution date. Note: Before buying a mutual fund, don’t forget to consider carefully its investment objectives, risks, fees, and expenses, which can be found in the prospectus available from the fund. Read the prospectus carefully before investing. Know where to hold ‘em Think about which investments make sense to hold in a tax-advantaged account and which might be better for taxable accounts. For example, it’s generally not a good idea to hold tax-free investments, such as municipal bonds, in a tax-deferred account (e.g., a 401(k), IRA, or SEP). Doing so provides no additional tax advantage to compensate you for tax-free investments’ typically lower returns. And doing so generally turns that tax-free income into income into income that’s taxable at ordinary income tax rates when you withdraw it from the retirement account. Similarly, if you have mutual funds that trade actively and therefore generate a lot of short-term capital gains, it may make sense to hold them in a tax-advantaged account to defer taxes on those gains, which can occur even if the fund itself has a loss. Finally, when deciding where to hold specific investments, keep in mind that distributions from a tax-deferred retirement plan don’t qualify for the lower tax rate on capital gains and dividends. Be selective about selling shares If you own a stock, fund, or ETF and decide to unload some shares, you may be able to maximize your tax advantage. For a mutual fund, the most common way to calculate cost basis is to use the average cost per share. However, you can also request that specific shares be sold--for example, those bought at a certain price. Which shares you choose depends on whether you want to book capital losses to offset gains, or keep gains to a minimum to reduce the tax bite. (This only applies to shares held in a taxable account.) Be aware that you must use the same method when you sell the rest of those shares. Example: You have invested periodically in a stock for five years, paying various prices, and now want to sell some shares. To minimize the capital gains tax you’ll pay on them, you could decide to sell the least profitable shares, perhaps those that were only slightly lower when purchased. Or if you wanted losses to offset capital gains, you could specify shares bought above the current price.

DAVE SAYS: THE STRANGE CHRISTMAS SCENE In a small southern town there was a “Nativity Scene” that showed great skill and talent had gone into creating it. One small feature bothered me. The three wise men were wearing firemen’s helmets. Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, I left. At a “Quik Stop” on the edge of town, I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets. She exploded into a rage, yelling at me, “You stupid Yankees never do read the Bible!” I assured her that I did, but simply couldn’t recall anything about firemen in the Bible. She jerked her Bible from behind the counter and ruffled through some pages, and finally jabbed her finger at a passage. Sticking it in my face she said “See, it says right here, ‘The three wise man came from afar.’”

DEAR DAVE,
I’m in the military, and my wife and I have $13,000 in the bank along with $35,000 in a Roth IRA. We also have no debt, and we put $3,500 into our savings account each month. Our new baby is due to arrive in January, so do you think this would be a good time to buy our first home? ~Tom Dear Tom, Based on the market alone, it’s a great time to buy a house. Interest rates are fantastic, and prices are recovering but still buyer-friendly. However, considering your wife’s delivery date and the fact that it takes a while to find and complete the process of buying a home, I think I’d wait on this. Moving is stressful enough under normal circumstances, but combining that with a pregnancy could shoot your wife’s stress levels into the stratosphere. I really don’t think you want to do that to her. And speaking as an old married guy, it’s something you don’t want to experience, either. Another thing to consider is if there’s a good chance you’ll be reassigned in the next four or five years. We work with the military a lot, and that means we see people who buy, and get stuck with, homes all over the country. These places usually become rental homes because they don’t sell quickly. And this is a situation you want to avoid because being a long-distance landlord is a real pain. If everything falls into place, you could easily have enough set aside for a big down payment a few months after the baby arrives. At that point, things will feel a little more settled. I know the temptation is great right now to move into a place you can call your own, but you want buying a home to be a blessing, not a curse. Take a little more time, and see how things feel career- and family-wise in a few months. That’s my advice. ~Dave Prewett Interiors: ~YOUR HOME STORE~ "We sell Awesome stuff!"... Decor & Gifts, too. Bill’s
Food Corner
Dig right in to our newest regular guest column! Bill Hake invites you to test his recipes and his theories and tell us what you think. And he takes “requests”!
Some fond memories from my younger days (that was a long, long time ago) were the Taffy pulling parties we always had around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We kids didn’t get in on the cooking, as someone’s Mom would cook up the sugar blobs for us, but we were needed to pull the taffy as it was more than a one person job. Besides having a lot of fun pulling the Taffy, which occasionally required a stern reminder that young gentlemen didn’t act that way, we knew we would all go home with some Taffy. Overall, it was a great experience that I hope all kids could get to enjoy. I will include several Taffy recipes here and remind you that experimenting with flavors, temperatures and timing will be required to perfect your Taffy-making skills. It seems that elevation, humidity, and even the type of sugar you use makes a difference.
Salt Water Taffy 1 cup sugar 1 Tbsp. cornstarch 2/3 cup white corn syrup 1 Tbsp. butter ½ cup water ¼ tsp. salt ½ tsp. flavoring extract of your choice (vanilla, almond, peppermint, etc.) Few drops food coloring (optional) In a heavy bottom 2 quart sauce pan add all ingredients except flavoring and food coloring. Cook over medium heat until mixture reaches 260 degrees. Remove from heat and stir in the flavoring and food coloring if using. Pour into a cooled and buttered casserole dish and let cool until it can be handled. If you can cool your dish it will help shorten your time to pull the taffy. Butter your hands and pull the taffy, double it back on itself and continue to pull until it is light in color and firm enough to hold its shape. Stretch it into a roll about 1 inch thick and cut into chunks with kitchen shears, then wrap in wax paper. It is a good idea to have help with the pulling and wrapping. Molasses Taffy 1 Tbsp. butter 1 cup dark molasses 1 Tbsp. water ½ cup sugar ¼ tsp. soda Add all ingredients except soda to sauce pan and cook over medium heat, stirring until it reaches 260 degrees. Remove from heat and stir in soda; pour into buttered and cooled casserole dish and cool until it can be handled and with buttered hands. As per first recipe, butter your hands and pull the taffy, double it back on itself and continue to pull until it is light in color and firm enough to hold its shape. Stretch it into a roll about 1 inch thick and cut into chunks with kitchen shears, then wrap in wax paper. Before you try your taffy it would be a good idea to go on the internet and Google Salt Water Taffy recipes. Then open www.cupcakeproject.com for pictures and full instructions. Also, www.justgetoffyourbuttandbake.com/ has good pictures, and you will find lots of recipes there.
