Although most of us recognize the importance of sound retirement planning, few of us embrace the nitty-gritty work involved. With thousands of investment possibilities, complex rules governing retirement plans, and so on, most people don’t even know where to begin. Here are some suggestions to help you get started.

Determine your retirement income needs Some experts suggest that you need anywhere from 60% to 90% of your current income to enable you to maintain your current standard of living in retirement. But this is only a general guideline. To determine your specific needs, you may want to estimate your annual retirement expenses.

Use your current expenses as a starting point, but note that your expenses may change dramatically by the time you retire. If you’re nearing retirement, the gap between your current expenses and your retirement expenses may be small. If retirement is many years away, the gap may be significant, and projecting your future expenses may be more difficult.

Remember to take inflation into account. The average annual rate of inflation over the past 20 years has been approximately 2.4%. (Source: Consumer price index (CPI-U) data published by the U.S. Department of Labor, 2012.) And keep in mind that your annual expenses may fluctuate throughout retirement. For instance, if you own a home and are paying a mortgage, your expenses will drop if the mortgage is paid off by the time you retire. Other expenses, such as health-related expenses, may increase in your later retirement years. A realistic estimate of your expenses will tell you about how much annual income you’ll need to live comfortably.

Calculate the gap Once you have estimated your retirement income needs, take stock of your estimated future assets and income. These may come from Social Security, a retirement plan at work, a part-time job, and other sources. If estimates show that your future assets and income will fall short of what you need, the rest will have to come from additional personal retirement savings. figure out how much you’ll need to save By the time you retire, you’ll need a nest egg that will provide you with enough income to fill the gap left by your other income sources. But exactly how much is enough?

The following questions may help you find the answer: • At what age do you plan to retire? The younger you retire, the longer your retirement will be, and the more money you’ll need to carry you through it.

• What kind of lifestyle do you hope to maintain during your retirement years?

• What is your life expectancy? The longer you live, the more years of retirement you’ll have to fund.

• What rate of growth can you expect from your savings now and during retirement? Be conservative when projecting rates of return.

Do you expect to dip into your principal? If so, you may deplete your savings faster than if you just live off investment earnings. Build in a cushion to guard against • these risks.

Build your retirement fund: Save, save, save When you know roughly how much money you’ll need, your next goal is to save that amount. First, you’ll have to map out a savings plan that works for you. Assume a conservative rate of return (e.g., 5 to 6%), and then determine approximately how much you’ll need to save every year between now and your retirement to reach your goal.

The next step is to put your savings plan into action. It’s never too early to get started (ideally, begin saving in your 20s). To the extent possible, you may want to arrange to have certain amounts taken directly from your paycheck and automatically invested in accounts of your choice (e.g., 401(k) plans, payroll deduction savings). This arrangement reduces the risk of impulsive or unwise spending that will threaten your savings plan. If possible, save more than you think you’ll need to provide a cushion.

Use the right savings tools Employer-sponsored retirement plans like 401(k)s and 403(b)s are powerful savings tools. Your contributions come out of your salary as pretax contributions (reducing your current taxable income) and any investment earnings grow tax deferred until withdrawn. Some 401(k), 403(b), and 457(b) plans also allow employees to make after-tax “Roth” contributions. There’s no up-front tax advantage, but qualified distributions are entirely free from federal income taxes. In addition, employer-sponsored plans often offer matching contributions, and may be your best option when it comes to saving for retirement.

IRAs also feature tax-deferred growth of earnings.

If you are eligible, traditional IRAs may enable you to lower your current taxable income through deductible contributions. Withdrawals, however, are taxable as ordinary income (except to the extent you’ve made nondeductible contributions).

Roth IRAs don’t permit tax-deductible contributions but allow you to make completely tax-free withdrawals under certain conditions. With both types, you can typically choose from a wide range of investments to fund your IRA. Annuities are generally funded with after-tax dollars, but their earnings grow tax deferred (you pay tax on the portion of distributions that represents earnings). There is also no annual limit on contributions to an annuity.

Note: Distributions from retirement plans, IRAs, and annuities prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% penalty tax unless an exception applies.

You have several options for saving for your retirement. How do you know what to do? Here’s one common approach: First contribute to employer-sponsored retirement plans, at least enough to get full company match • Employer match is “free” money (you may forfeit match if you don’t work for a given length of time) • Dollars grow tax deferred until withdrawn • Systematic payments from your paycheck--you’ll hardly notice • Most plans allow pretax contributions resulting in an immediate savings • Certain plans may allow Roth contributions--tax free when withdrawn, earnings tax free if “qualified distribution” • But, investment choices might be limited Then contribute to IRAs • Many investment options • Traditional IRA contributions may or may not be tax deductible; Roth IRA contributions made with after-tax dollars • Dollars grow tax deferred until withdrawn • Roth IRA contributions tax free when withdrawn, earnings tax free if “qualified distribution” • Can contribute up to $5,500 in 2013 ($5,000 in 2012) (individuals age 50 and older may contribute an additional $1,000) Other options: annuities, stock plans, life insurance, other investments (e.g., stock, mutual funds), nonqualified deferred compensation, salary continuation plans • Annuities, life insurance and other options have unique tax advantages • Current lower capital gains tax rates make some equity investments more attractive for retirement planning • Some options may be complex, and timing of taxable events may be difficult to control This information, developed by an independent third party, has been obtained from sources considered to be reliable, but Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. does not guarantee that the foregoing material is accurate or complete.

Havre Muffler & Brake Take two individuals with diverse backgrounds & interests, and what do you get? Seventy-two years of varied experience in the automotive field and multiple other talents. These are the two people who you will see at Havre Muffler & Brake—Tony Dolphay and Dale Collins.

Tony grew up on a farm and ranch on the Canadian border north of Whitewater, Montana, then attended Northern Montana College to pursue and receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Technology. Working full time while attending college as a small engine mechanic and rental equipment repairman-operator, he attained customer relationship skills along the way.

Working alongside Tony is Dale Collins. Raised around the Box Elder area, he got his start in the automotive field by working closely with the “old pro”, Les Blair.

In 1991, many jobs later for Tony and Dale, they wound up working together at Hayward’s Muffler and Brake.

Unbeknownst at the time, this would turn out to be a long term business relationship between the two of them. On April Fools Day, 1999, Havre Muffler & Brake was born, not by chance, but by need and personal choice. First and foremost, Tony and Dale found themselves unemployed for the first time in their lives. This was because of the sale of the business they had been employed at. They both had job offers and opportunities to work for others but decided they had the skills, drive, desire, and customer base to succeed out on their own. Thus, Havre Muffler & Brake came to be.

A lot of initial help came from financing thanks to, at that time, First Security Bank of Havre, now known as Independence Bank. It wasn’t easy to convince all the right people at the same time, but with proven discipline it did happen.

In October of 2000, Havre Muffler & Brake moved from 3210 Highway 2 East to its current location at 932 First Street. The opportunity to own the building and ground that it sat upon was too much to pass up. Plus, the location, closer to downtown, was sure to prove its value potential.

The name Havre Muffler & Brake implies what Tony and Dale specialize in, but fleet maintenance and repair is also available. From your basic service needs to somewhat extensive repair for your automobile, Havre Muffler & Brake can either do the job or recommend someone who may be more adept at the task. Tony and Dale believe that people don’t expect miracles, just a fair deal and honest treatment. They are always willing to try something new or different, but let their customers know beforehand. They’ve had the privilege of working for both local and distant customers. Their local customers have been the friendliest and most loyal, for which they appreciate them so much, and are thankful for the opportunity to work for and with them.

They attempt to show their appreciation by giving back to their home community. A long list of groups and organizations they back includes Special Olympics, Havre Youth Baseball, Havre Lions, Montana Pilots Association, Recycle Hi-Line, Boys & Girls Club, Boy Scouts, Havre Eagles, Beaver Creek Park, Havre Airport Board, 4-H, as well as Liquor Haven ~ Travel Haven doing donation work for rural fire departments.

Hi-Line Basketball:

High school basketball may be wrapping up for the 2013 season, but those with a hankering for more roundball need not fear—there is lots of basketball action to be had across the Hi-Line of Montana in the coming weeks.

GROSECLOSE MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

First, comes the 18th Annual Groseclose Invitational Tournament in Rudyard, March 15, 16 and 17. The first tournament was started by Jody Hansen as a scholarship fundraiser in memory of Jason Gloseclose who was killed in a snowmobile accident. The popularity of this men’s tournament has increased exponentially. The sixteen spots in the tournament fill up quickly, with most being spoken for by November or December each year.

The tournament is a multi-community affair with Friday games being held at the Gildford gym and the Rudyard gym, and Hingham steps up to feed the teams that evening at the local bar and grill. Rudyard hosts most of Saturday’s action with games all day long and a social affair at the bowling alley that evening.

Hundreds of people attend this event each year, with over 130 players and hundreds more parents, friends, family and fans. Competition is fierce. Pat Foster, a coordinator of this year’s tournament, says, “Last year, out of sixteen teams, fourteen of them could have easily won it.” Entry to watch the tournament action is free will at the gate, and concessions and t-shirts are available on the premises. Overall, the Groseclose yearly tournament is an occasion to reunite these small communities and it provides a quality family social event for all who attend.

That same weekend on the eastern end of the Hi-Line, and for slightly younger athletes, is the Jeff Jurgen Memorial Tournament, March 15-17th, now going on its fifteenth year. Coordinators Tom and Liz Schmitt expect 65 to 90 teams in participation from grades four through ten. There is a division for each grade level for boys, and the same for girls, except that grade 9 will be combined with grade 10.

The Home Affordable Refinance Program is designed for people who have made their payments on time but are underwater on their mortgages. Being “underwater” means they owe more on their homes than the homes are worth. So basically it gives them the opportunity to refinance their home loans.

The HARP program is the only part of the Making Home Affordable program that actually worked. And to be honest, it has worked well. In contrast, the recent Home Loan Modification program is a piece of junk and all about political posturing. About 93 percent of the people who applied for a home loan modification didn’t get one. It was just another case of the government pretending to do something.

I’d advise looking into the HARP program if you’ve got a good credit history and you’re underwater on your current home. Lots of HARP program applications are being approved, and the deals are closing. That’s what really matters when you find yourself in a situation like this. ~Dave Dear Dave,

Recently, my husband had to quit his job due to an old back injury. We have $25,000 in debt, but I’ll be receiving a $38,000 inheritance in a couple of weeks. Should we use the money to pay off our debt, or hold on to it in case he needs surgery? ~Kirsten Dear Kirsten,

Now is the time to keep the cash piled high. You’re in the middle of an emergency, and that means you push the pause button on your Total Money Makeover and stop paying extra on debt.

Surgery is a possibility at this point, plus you may need some of that money to live on until his job situation improves.

Then, the moment he returns to work and things are stabilized, you jump back into getting control of your finances. Use whatever is left of the $38,000 to pay off debt that very day. But right now you don’t need to worry about becoming debt-free, only to turn around and be in a mess in the event he has trouble finding another job.

Let me give you a warning too. Thirty-eight thousand dollars is a great gift. If someone handed me a check for that amount, I’d cash it in a heartbeat. But it’s not $380,000 or $3.8 million.

It’s easy to develop a false sense of security if you’ve never received a check of that size. This kind of money is enough to keep the wolf away from the door for a while, but it’s nothing to retire on.

This little nest egg is a real blessing, Kristen. Just make sure you handle it wisely, and take into account all of the possibilities over the next couple of months. In a best-case scenario your husband won’t need surgery, he’ll find a job pretty soon, and you guys won’t have to dig in to the inheritance money. Hang on to as much as possible, though. This sounds like a time of personal and professional transition for you both, and having that kind of extra cash around could be a lifesaver! ~Dave

Tomato Soup



There’s nothing like a steaming hot bowl of soup to break the chill of a cold, crisp, Montana winter day. Here is a very flavorful recipe to fill that bill.

I have an additional reason for choosing this particular recipe. Recent research has found that Lycopene (a fat soluble phytochemical antioxidant) is a more valuable nutrient than vitamins C & E when it comes to slowing the aging process, and some of us need all of the help we can get. Lycopene is a red pigmented carotenoid found in tomatoes, red grapes, watermelon, pink grapefruit and other red fruits and vegetables in lesser amounts.

Now, think about this for a minute. If you could come in from that cold, crisp, Montana winter day, mellow out with a nice (large) glass of red wine, warm the cockles of your heart with a steaming hot bowl of hearty tomato soup and with all of that “slow down the aging process”, well, it just couldn’t get any better than that.

Cream of Tomato Soup 1 lb. brats or your favorite cured sausage, cut into ½” pieces 1 cup diced onion 1 oz. butter 1 can chicken broth (11 oz.)

1 tsp. chicken bullion 3 Tbsp. sugar 2 cans crushed or diced tomatoes (28 oz. each) 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. dried basil or 1 Tbsp. fresh, if you have it 1 pint heavy whipping cream

In a 6 quart stock pot melt the butter, brown the sausage and onion for a few minutes then add the chicken broth, bullion, sugar, tomatoes, soda and Basil, set heat to simmer and cook slow for at least 30 minutes or more. Just before serving add cream and cook long enough to heat through.

TIPS: If you like your soup a little thicker, you can blend a heaping Tbsp. of corn starch with ¼ cup of water and add with the tomatoes. If you like a little heat in your soup, you can add a 10 oz. can of Ro-Tel tomatoes with green chilies, or you can add 1 or 2 jalapeño peppers, chopped small. If you like it real hot, add seeds and all, or for milder heat remove the seeds. If you like a little more body to your soup, you can add a can of drained hominy or a can of regular corn.

The foundation for this recipe is taken from the original 4B’s Old Fashioned Cream of Tomato Soup. However, I have replaced the coffee creamer used in their recipe with real cream because coffee creamer contains hydrogenated fat, which, by most accounts, is an unhealthy food choice; I will argue with anyone that real cream in moderation is a healthy natural food. I also have added additional options to satisfy a variety of palates.

Without a Shot

These are strange times. In early January, I won a Ruger, 10/22, semiautomatic rifle as a door prize; something I needed, as all my other .22s began as birthday gifts to my children, so left home when they did. My rimfire arsenal was down to one rusted, single-shot, bolt action Marlin, adequate for plinking, but little else. I explained my good fortune to my son-in-law, Tim, and he said “good luck finding ammunition.”

I laughed thinking he was kidding. Rimfire ammunition is ubiquitous and every convenience, hardware store and gas station in Montana has dusty boxes of .22 shells sitting on a shelf in a back corner anxious to become the property of a twelve-year-old boy intent on plinking holes in empty pop cans.

This is America and the supply of .22 shells is simply never a problem. Is it?

Two days later, the trophy wife and I ventured into Scheels and walked over to the ammunition department. Immediately below a bold yellow sign emblazoned with the words “Rimfire Ammo” stood a stack of five shelves, four feet wide, twelve inches deep crammed to capacity with empty.

The shelves were completely bare. I dropped to my hands and knees and thrust my preg-checking arm behind the shelf searching for misplaced boxes which might have dropped from sight over the years. I scored one carton and as I examined the box another ammo patron walked up and whispered, “Big Bear just received a shipment of .22 shells.” We kept our voices low like we were executing a drug deal; I thanked him and hustled to checkout. Moments later in Big Bear, the trophy wife and I purchased all the .22 shells each customer was allotted plus a case of 12 gauge shells and a couple cases of .357 magnums. If there was going to be an ammo shortage caused by hoarders, I would rather cause than be caught by one. These are strange times and here is why I told you this.

The last of my gun bills, HB459, passed out of House Judiciary, so the next stop is Second Reading on the House floor. HB459 is an “act prohibiting

a healthcare provider from refusing or conditioning care if a person refuses to provide information relating to firearm ownership, possession or use.” Casual consumers of news dismiss this bill as meaningless, yet it may become the single act which stands between your fundamental right to keep and bear arms and their confiscation. I shake my head in disbelief when I hear sunshine patriots boast the government “can have my guns when they pry them from my cold dead fingers” all while voting gun control advocates into public office.

They will never make the connection until eventually they surrender all their firearms without firing a shot. Here is how this will happen and my reasons for HB459.

On January 16, 2013, President Obama released 23 “Gun Violence Reduction Executive Actions” of which Action #2, #14, #16, #17, #21, and #22 utilize the national healthcare system to collect gun ownership information. As Obamacare grows over the next decade, unwary citizens will voluntarily divulge firearm ownership information including serial numbers in exchange for routine healthcare. Through the power of incrementalism, placing this information in a federal database seems harmless at first.

However, someday in the future, imagine a loved one in your care needing critical medical attention, so you rush into an Obamacare facility because no other option exists. Healthcare enforcers examine your medical records and announce the Public Safety Authority has handed down Rule 1040 declaring all semiautomatic rifles, including .22s, are applicable only for military purposes. You must surrender your previously identified Ruger, 10/22 prior to your loved one receiving treatment. With no other choice you do. Scoffers might dismiss my warnings as fear mongering; something which would never happen. If you believe me and I am wrong, America has lost nothing. If you ignore me and I am right, America has lost everything. How much are you willing to risk? Shouldn’t we stop this now?
