COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
The Herd Assessment They glanced at one another While they’re leaning on the rail Tilting back their cowboy hats They observed each close detail.
Agreement bounces back and forth Discussion pulls them deeper That one needs some extra feed This one’s an easy keeper.
Their weathered faces turn and nod It appears, each man agrees While one adjusts his spectacles The other rubs his knees.
Some traits, they need to estimate Such as flighty disposition There’s a need to check the feed Need to know the composition.
The herd just seems to file by They score each passing draft With many years of expertise, They’re masters at their craft.
Feed consumption analyzed All traits are in account They’ve estimated ratios, … the feed and the amount.
Through the hectic atmosphere They swapped some information They’re scoring every aspect They judge hips and conformation.
With a vocal interruption, They called it a day “Are you gentlemen in line for our special lunch buffet?”

SignS of a HouSing RecoveRy? According to a well-known gauge of the U.S. housing market, home prices have been on an upswing. The latest S&P/Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Home Price Index, which was released in May, posted its biggest gain in seven years. This improvement has spurred renewed optimism about housing’s role in the country’s economic recovery.
Hey! Looking for a good building mover?? Call Dale Freitag 654-1123 or Dan Liese 379-2320. Prompt, experienced, competitive pricing. 7-I(1)
For Sale: 2011 Ford Taurus SEL. Silver exterior w/ light gray leather interior. Only 29,149 mi. Call Duane Sparks Chevrolet, (406) 538-3455. 7-I
What does the latest S&P/case-Shiller home price index reveal about home prices? The 20-city index--one of several S&P/Case-Shiller housing indices--showed a 10.9% gain between March 2012 and March 2013, the highest increase since 2006. In addition, all 20 cities tracked by the index had gains for three straight months. While the numbers certainly give homeowners and real estate investors cause to be optimistic, it’s important to note that not all cities saw the same price increases. Both San Francisco and Phoenix saw large price jumps of more than 20%. However, New York and Boston had smaller gains of 2.6% and 6.7%, respectively. What factors are driving the recovery, and what do rising home prices mean for the economy as a whole? A variety of factors are driving home prices up, such as low housing inventory, low mortgage rates, and a decline in foreclosures/short sales. As for the economy as a whole, rising home prices often serve as an indicator that the economy is performing better since it generally demonstrates increased consumer confidence. And while this latest report is good news for homeowners looking to sell, it also provides welcome news to underwater homeowners who may now see an increase in their home equity. It is important to note, however, that other economic data--such as the large number of institutional investors buying properties to rent--suggests that there is still a ways to go in terms of a full-fledged housing recovery. could this all lead to another housing bubble? Today’s economic environment is different than the one that led to the housing bubble burst in 2006. Those differences include a tighter mortgage lending environment and houses that are still undervalued at prices that are significantly lower than they were at their 2006 peak. Face Lift A 75-year-old woman went into life or death surgery, and she wasn’t sure she would make it through. During the surgery, she had a vision. She saw and spoke to God. She asked him, “How much time do I have to live?” He said, “You have 35 years left.” So that following year she had all kinds of cosmetic surgery. She a face lift, a tummy tuck, her nose reshaped, liposuction -- she completely did herself over. She figured as long as she was going to live another 35 years, she was going to look young again. After all this was done and she was discharged from the hospital, she was hit by a cab and was killed instantly. When she entered eternity she walked over to God and said, “What happened? I thought you said I had another 35 years. Why did you let that cab hit me?” God replied, “I didn’t recognize you!”

Just like “It takes a community to raise a child”, it takes small businesses to strengthen a community. Without loyal communityminded businesses, many Montana towns would be nothing more than a happy memory. These dedicated companies consistently provide jobs, industry, donations and volunteer services to the patrons who support them. They know that without a healthy economy in their town, their own companies will suffer, so they give back faithfully....When you see them be sure to say, “Thanks!”
Supporting the communities we work in...
Duane Sparks Chevrolet
MULTI-CITY: Ezzie’s Wholesale
Building a business takes more than brick and mortar; it takes heart. Carrying on a legacy? That takes strength. Duane Sparks Chevrolet, Inc. is a model company which exists not only to provide citizens of Lewistown and the HARLEM: surrounding area with impeccable automobile service, but with endless support off the books as well. Richman Insurance The original company was founded in 1915 for new Fords, and was purchased by Thomas Dowen in 1926. In 1968, it changed hands again, becoming Dean Newton GMC, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac. Duane Sparks would enter the LEWISTOWN: Snowy Mountain Motors picture three years into this new chapter, and he’s been in the same location ever since. It wasn’t until April 2005 that Duane purchased the company. But the new Duane Sparks GMC and Cadillac would have a short life in comparison to Lewistown Rental its predecessor, due to disputes with GMC and the federal government. After a long-fought battle and eventual victory, Duane Sparks Chevrolet Duane made the decision to become a Chevrolet dealership in April 2011. This move has proven to be a sound business decision. The Duane Sparks Chevrolet, Inc. mission is to serve CHINOOK: Jamieson Motors Central Montana with a one-stop dealership, providing new Chevy pickups, cars, and SUVs. They are also a certified GM service center, body shop, and GM parts department. Used vehicle trade-ins and GM lease retailers are also a feature of the American Garage, LLC company, as well as the Sparks Rent-A-Car service. Duane, his wife, Marilynn, and his son, Scott, employ 17 community TURNER: members, all of whom Duane readily praises. “They’re good people,” he says. “Some have been here for 20 years, but we Reed’s Ag Enterprises ~ also have some younger people coming in who are tremendous.” Turner Supply It’s hard not to get noticed when carrying such a legacy. Duane has served Central Montana farmers, ranchers, HAVRE: and community members for 45 years at the same location, one that has been established for nearly a century. And as if North Star Dodge Duane Sparks Chevrolet wasn’t already doing enough on the business end of things, his company is also prominent in the Custom Collision Repair community. “By supporting my community, they get to know me,” says Duane. And know him they do. Duane Sparks Chevrolet Havre Muffler & Brake is active in supporting a multitude of organizations, including American Legion Lewistown Redbirds Baseball, local boys’ Havre Ready Mix, Inc.~ & girls’ basketball, girls’ softball, FFA, the Lewistown Boys and Girls Club, the Central Montana Fair, the Stanford Fair, Baltrusch Construction, Inc. the Art Center, 4-H, and Fergus High School. ~Havre Sand & Gravel, Inc. If there’s any doubt, the citizens of Lewistown and the surrounding area speak for themselves. Back in 2009, Pacific Steel & Recycling when Duane faced pressure from both GM and the federal government, the community rose in support for Sparks GM and Cadillac, writing letters and making phone calls until the war was won. A few years later, when his son and business Tilleman Motor Co. partner, Ryan, passed away, the community RUDYARD: again rushed to support Duane and his family McNair Furniture through the tragedy. MALTA: Owning a company is no picnic. But those Radio Shack Malta who persevere and grow through the trials— whether bureaucratic or tragic—will have not First State Bank only success, but love and support in return. Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor
by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58
We hope you enjoy reading this feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but
you will always have something to discuss over dinner.
Connect the Dots Organic chemistry is the make-it or break-it class for students vying for admission to the limited openings in veterinary colleges. I survived the course and garnered a coveted spot into Colorado State, but was nearly killed in the process because while studying fractionating distillations, I asked the lab instructor, “What is the difference between what we are doing and making moonshine?” “Nothing,” he responded; an answer which sparked me to build a still while home over spring break. It probably would have been safer to spend spring break in the traditional manner—partying on the beaches of Mexico watching trustfunder college co-eds record “Girls Gone Wild” videos. The worst fate I could suffer there would have been my moral decay and alcohol poisoning both of which could be fixed by a short stint in re-hab. Instead, I went home to help with the calving and when I wasn’t feeding, tagging calves, or cleaning the barn I was in the basement building my still; a decision which nearly terminated me plus my closest relatives. It’s far more dangerous growing up a ranch kid than a trust-funder. Project Moonshine was only half done when I returned to the university at the end of spring break; bottling would wait until I returned home for Easter break. So after Easter dinner with both my teetotalling grandmothers joining us, I excused myself from the table, hustled into the basement and bottled four quarts of what I suspected was 95 percent ethanol. There are safe ways to test the alcohol content, but such methods escaped me at the moment, so I calculated the exact boiling point for a grain alcohol solution given the current barometric pressure around my mother’s kitchen stove top. I returned from the basement to the kitchen and said not a word as I poured a pint of my moonshine into a pot, immersed Mom’s candy thermometer and turned up the heat. Bingo—my grain alcohol hit a rapid boil at the exact temperature I had calculated. I smugly grinned at my brilliance and turned off the propane stove which unfortunately, had a quirky flaw of woofing as it extinguished. End of story. You have enough data to connect

the dots and mentally draw the final picture of what happens when you boil alcohol over an open flame, so I will jump to my political point. This March, Montana’s House Judiciary Committee had the sense of mind to table Representative Hill’s (D-Missoula) HB527, an Act creating the offense of cyber bullying. Arguments were made this law was needed as Montana is the only state in the union without such legislation. Not only did we bottle up HB527, we successfully defended an attempt by the House Democrats and some of the Responsible Republicans to force the bill from committee to the House floor. Collectivists want this bill because it is like hate crime legislation where once fully implemented, citizens can be convicted for something they only thought about doing. Read that sentence again; I’ll wait. Perhaps you have heard all the anti-bullying radio ads; segments which are probably on television, but since I do not have television I cannot say with certainty. The left wants government to have this power, so this legislation will pop up again in 2015. With HB527 fresh in your mind, let’s connect the dots to the current scandals at the federal level. Unless you have been living under a rock, you have heard the National Security Agency (NSA), has been monitoring and data banking electronic communications of American citizens for several years. Experts are claiming every key stroke from your lap top or smart phone has been data-based with the NSA regardless whether you sent or deleted it. Your intent has been forever recorded as a part of your identity. Astute readers have beaten me to the punch, connected the dots between HB527 and the NSA, and are frantically searching their memories for any nasty grams they composed, but never sent. Less astute readers are dismissing the actions of the NSA as meaningless because they have done nothing wrong so have nothing to hide. Answer me this: What will you do when the “thought police” arrest you for expressing opinions outside what the government deems acceptable? It is not much of a stretch once you connect the dots.

Dear Dave, Our son is about to graduate from law school. He took out a loan to cover the cost, but we’ve been paying on it for two years to help him out. Right now, the balance on the loan is about $76,000. We could continue paying it off, but my husband is hesitant. How do you feel about this situation? ~Patty Dear Patty, It’s not a bad thing if you guys decide to continue helping him out by paying off the rest of Malta Tire is ready to help you the loan. But I don’t want you to feel as if you’re obligated in any way. No deal has been broken here, and you haven’t reneged on a previous agreement. But there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a young with all your automotive repairs lawyer earning a living and paying off his own debt. He can roll up his sleeves and clean up the mess and tractor tire repairs. Hwy 2 he participated in making. West, Malta. 406-654-2120. 7-I If you do decide to pay it off, that’s an incredibly generous gift. In my mind, it should be met with much gratitude and appreciation. It should also be accompanied by a signed letter of agreement from him stating that he will never, except in the case of a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage, borrow money again. In other words, I’d want to see some kind of permanent commitment and recognition of the fact that you guys have changed your family tree. I’d want this kid to be affected in a deep and profound way by this gift; so much that his kids would also be affected in a positive way by your behavior and by his in the years to come! ~Dave Dear Dave, Is there a downside to refinancing your home often? ~Katrina Dear Katrina, There’s really no downside to this, as long as each time you do a refinance you lower your interest rate enough to allow you to recoup closing costs before you move. In other words, you have to first make sure the numbers work. First, calculate the amount of money you’ll save as a result of a refinance. The way to do this is by multiplying the interest difference by your loan balance. If you have a $200,000 mortgage on a 5 percent loan, and you refinance to a 3 percent loan, that will save you 2 percent per year, or $4,000. Next, look at the refinance costs. What are the closing costs in order to refinance? If it’s $10,000, and you divide that by $4,000, that says it would take two and a half years to get your money back. If the costs are $8,000, it would take you two years to get your money back if you’re saving $4,000 a year. That’s pretty substantial! What I just laid out is called a break-even analysis. Basically, it answers the question of how long it will take you to get back the money you spent on closing costs with the interest you save. That will give you the answer as to whether or not you should refinance again. So, there’s not really a “you’ve done this too often” rule. If you refinance three times in a year it would only be smart if interest rates have dropped significantly throughout that time. Doing a refinance to save an eighth of a percent won’t work out well for you. ~Dave

Claims that don’t hold water...continued
To continue our last column’s conversation, dehydration can be anything from a minor inconvenience to a life threatening condition, depending on our personal circumstances. First of all, we need to understand the causes of dehydration. Vomiting, diarrhea and fever are the most dangerous because they are almost always caused by an infection or allergy that can continue to exacerbate the problem. Small children and older people are in the most danger because they don’t have the reserves that healthy adults have to deal with the problem. Next would be diabetics because the inflammation throws their ability to control their blood sugar out of whack. All of these people need to have someone who can get in touch with their doctor or emergency medical services because things can go south in a hurry, and you won’t always have hours to respond. The rest of us, with watchful anticipation, can stop eating to stop feeding the infection or allergy, and rehydrate with a non-caloric electrolyte solution by sipping slowly but constantly, trying to avoid nausea. If vomiting continues or a bloody stool occurs, call your doctor immediately. For any infection that continues for a couple of days, I would want a doctor’s opinion on how best to treat it. Complete voiding or flushing of the substance that is causing the inflammation is the best cure, and a doctor would best know how accomplish that. You can make your own electrolyte solution by adding ½ tsp. natural iodized sea salt and ½ tsp. light salt to 1 quart of non-softened, non-filtered tap water. Use “natural” sea salt because it contains an abundance of micro nutrients, “light” salt for its potassium chloride, and unfiltered tap water for its supply of minerals. Dehydration is not just a symptom of water loss, but also of the electrolyte loss that the water takes with it. Only when we have an exceptional water loss such as vomiting, diarrhea or heavy sweating do we need to consider immediate electrolyte replacement. Now, let’s consider the more benign form of dehydration that occurs from excessive sweating caused by hot weather or hard work or both, and lack of fluid intake. The most common symptom here would be muscle cramps, which can be remedied with the electrolyte solution described above. One danger we have here is that “heat cramps” and “heat stroke” both fall into the same category and need to be considered and treated by removing the patient from the sun, and cooling and re-hydrating them. Cooling is the most important. Re-hydrate slowly to prevent vomiting. There are those who claim drinking more water will satisfy hunger and help with weight loss as well as prevent dehydration. We need to remember that a lack of available energy (carbohydrates, protein or fat) or nutrients (enzymes, vitamins or minerals) causes hunger, so if our hunger is because of a shortage of minerals (electrolytes) then a non-caloric electrolyte solution might well satisfy that hunger, but a glass of filtered or bottled water will only satisfy thirst as it contains none of the elements needed to correct the hunger. Drinking excessive amounts of water will not make you healthier. Normally satisfying your thirst is sufficient to keep you hydrated and healthy. The best indicator of adequate hydration is urine that is a light yellow. Brownish yellow would indicate dehydration and bright yellow would mean you are peeing away your vitamin supplements. Having fluids available to satisfy thirst is your most important tool to prevent dehydration. Contact me at bhake@icloud.com or Bill’s Food Corner, PO Box 81, Turner, MT 59542.
