Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

Prior to my marrying my high school sweetheart, my older brother, Dana, offered this advice. “Training a wife is like training a dog.” I would have completely ignored his wisdom because at the time he was a rider in our mountain cow camps, so was on the path to perpetual bachelordom.

However, he did have a very well trained dog, Cody, so he just might have an inside angle to a good marriage. Over the years I have successfully trained several dogs, but the outcome in training the trophy wife is yet to be determined.

The fact she has never left me to ride for some other brand is testament to my soft approach to the training process. If Druann ever reads this, she will kill me, so I’ll focus on dogs in the remaining column.

To be the top dog, the number one rule is never give a command you are unable or unwilling to immediately enforce. If you do not have control over your canine while he is on a leash, it is foolish to think you will control him when he is sprinting through the brush. I painfully remember several pheasant hunts ruined by dog owners unfamiliar with rule number one. Here was the scene: We parked our pickups on the edge of an un-harvested grain field stuffed with rooster pheasants. My friend opened the two kennels in his rig and his two professionally trained Labrador Retrievers rocketed to freedom. At speeds faster than a shotgun blast,

both dogs ripped into the field and began flushing pheasants.

The owner chased them screaming the command “kennel, kennel” as if he fully expected the dogs to suddenly have an epiphany upon hearing his voice and return to the pickup.

They never did. As dozens upon dozens of roosters safely took flight over the far horizon, I quietly banged my head on the hood of my pickup wondering why I kept subjecting myself to this insanity. This same rule regarding the senselessness of issuing commands you have no ability, or intentions, to enforce also exists in politics; especially in the international theatre, so I will jump to my point.

Once again, America finds herself negotiating from a position of weakness, figuratively screaming “kennel, kennel” to foreign entities deaf to empty threats.

No longer are we the world’s sole super power, so third rate dictators thumb their noses at President Obama while he draws meaningless lines in the sand. Seizing the golden opportunity of America’s pacifist ineptness, Russia recently invaded Ukraine; a scene glaringly similar to their invasion of Afghanistan in 1980. Those were the Carter years; another time where America wielded the sword and shield of appeasement. Interestingly, the Olympics served as a stage prop in both 1980 and today in 2014. Should we militarily engage in Ukraine? I think not, but our options are few at this point. Would things have been different today on the world stage had on September 11, 2012, President Obama launched a full force military rescue on Benghazi when Ambassador Stevens came under attack? Absolutely! Had the terrorists been sent straight to the gates of hell compliments of American firepower the entire world would realize we will enforce any command, anytime and anywhere on the face of the earth. Instead we let the desperate, final SOS call from two of America’s finest fall on deaf ears all while officials in Washington DC concocted an elaborate ruse this situation was due to an antiMuslim video. When you couple the blame-America-first attitude of this administration with the March 26, 2012 offmike whisper from President Obama to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to “tell Vladimir I will be more flexible” after winning re-election, is it any wonder the Russians view the United States as a paper tiger? Just like the post-Carter era, America so needs a principled leader who truly loves our country.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 2013 at a new all-time record, and the S&P 500 reached its all-time closing high two weeks later. The Federal Reserve is confident enough that in December it announced it would begin reducing the bond purchases that have helped fuel economic recovery.

But fast-forward to the end of January and things look a little different. The Dow lost 5.6% during the month--its worst January since 2009--and the S&P 500 went from an all-time high to a monthly loss in just over two weeks. What in the world has been going on?

As it turns out, “what in the world” is exactly the right phrase. The recent turmoil demonstrates just how tightly linked global markets are now. The shift in Fed policy coupled with internal problems in a number of emerging-market countries have given financial markets around the world the jitters. After 2013’s stellar run for equities, many investors have decided to back away from risk for a while, and that has hurt not only emerging markets but also U.S. stocks.

If you’re unclear about why a headline like “Argentina devalues its peso” can have an impact on equities around the world, you’re not alone. Here’s a brief look at how Fed policy and emerging-market currencies have combined to wreak havoc on global markets recently.

Good news, bad news from the Fed Since November 2008, policies by both the Federal Reserve and other central banks have kept interest rates low; to combat the recession, they injected money into the global economy and made it easier to obtain credit.

Emerging markets benefitted from that easy money. Investors who grew impatient with the Fed’s historically low interest rates turned to investments paying a higher return. In many cases, those investments were overseas, and that influx of money helped fuel growth in emerging markets.

However, that dynamic began to show signs of reversing last June after the Fed announced its plans for winding down its economic support. Investors who had sought the higher interest rates that emerging markets had to pay on their debt began to rethink their strategy, anticipating the end of rock-bottom rates on U.S. Treasuries and a stronger dollar. Once the Fed actually began cutting its bond purchases last month, currencies such as the Brazilian real, the Indian rupee, the South African rand, and the Turkish lira began to lose value even more rapidly. As a country’s currency weakened and each real or lira bought less and less, higher prices set in, especially for goods valued in stronger currencies such as the dollar.

That kind of inflation, coupled with high budget deficits in many cases, has contributed to political instability in some countries. Many emerging-market leaders have been faced with a difficult choice. Do they raise interest rates to try to fight inflation and keep investment assets from leaving the country for bigger returns elsewhere--at the risk of hurting what may be an already fragile economy by making credit tougher to get? Or do they devalue their currency further, hoping that less-expensive exports will improve sales, but also risking greater inflation and the anger of citizens suffering from soaring prices? That uncertainty has brought on double-digit losses in the stock markets of some developing economies such as Brazil and Turkey.

The Fed isn’t the only reason for emerging-market problems The beginning of tighter Fed policy in January was followed by a second trigger for the current turmoil: a survey of purchasing managers in China that suggested that the manufacturing sector there was slowing. China has announced plans to rein its so-called “shadow banking” system--unregulated lending that has helped fuel a frenzy of development there in recent years.

China’s manufacturing sector, which serves as the factory floor for much of the world, is an important customer for the commodity exports that are vital to many emerging economies; lower demand for commodities could have a substantial impact on countries whose economies depend on exporting them.

If Chinese manufacturing catches a cold, economies that depend on exports to those manufacturers could get the flu, and the disease could take the biggest toll on countries whose economies are already sick or that have low reserves of U.S. dollars in their coffers.

Concerns about such problems have come to a head in the last few weeks as countries have taken various approaches to try to deal with their problems.

Argentina stunned global markets when it devalued its peso by almost 20% in an attempt to help pay the country’s debts, while Venezuela imposed indirect currency controls. Turkey nearly doubled its key interest rate, while central banks in Brazil, India, and South Africa also have raised interest rates in the last couple of weeks.

Why does any of this matter to U.S. equities?

There are two reasons why the turmoil in emerging markets has had an impact domestically. First, many large U.S. companies derive a substantial percentage of their revenues overseas. Weaker currencies abroad can cut into those companies’ revenues as American goods become more unaffordable for customers overseas and sales made in a weakened currency are worth less to a company’s bottom line. Headwinds from exchange rates and lower sales could affect corporate profits.

Also, it wasn’t so long ago that global financial institutions were at serious risk of being hurt by bad investments in struggling countries. Memories of Greece and other struggling eurozone countries in 2011-2012 are helping to fuel a global “risk off” mentality among investors already on edge about how aggressively the Fed will tighten and how the U.S. economy will respond.

Keep some perspective in the face of turbulence The events of recent weeks are a reminder that emerging markets are typically more volatile than those of more developed economies, and that in addition to being subject to the usual risks that apply to all equities, foreign investments are subject to the currency and political risks that are an inherent part of investing internationally. However, it’s also worth remembering that the International Monetary Fund recently raised its forecast for global economic growth this year to an annual rate of 3.7%*. Also, one of the reasons for the Fed’s monetary tightening is that its outlook for the U.S. economy is more encouraging. The Fed also has left itself plenty of room to maintain its support; in 2010, it halted bond purchases because the economy was growing, only to renew them a couple of months later. The Fed won’t meet again until the end of March, so markets will have a little time to digest its most recent decision.

Don’t let every twist and turn derail a carefully constructed investment game plan. If you’re focused on a long-term goal, remember that your personal circumstances are just as important as external events, and ups and downs in the market are to be expected. Though the S&P 500 lost 3.6% in January, that came on the heels of a 29.6% price gain in 2013, and many experts have argued that some retrenchment in an almost five-year bull market is to be expected.

However, it might be worth exploring how various asset classes in your portfolio could be affected by Fed actions and global volatility, and whether there are ways to hedge your exposure. I know you hate payday loan companies. Do you feel the same way about check-cashing companies? ~Brian Dear Brian,

Check-cashing companies are not a good deal, but they’re nowhere near as bad as payday lenders.

All check-cashing businesses do is charge a fee to cash a check. Honestly, it’s kind of silly to me that places like this can make money when all you have to do is walk into a bank and open an account. But there’s a percentage of our population that people in financial circles call “unbanked.” This means they avoid banks for whatever reason, but in the process they leave themselves susceptible to bad deals like this.

So I don’t feel the same way about check-cashing companies as I do about payday lenders. It’s still not a financially smart move to pay a storefront operation a fee just to cash a check, but these businesses aren’t nearly as abusive as payday lenders. ~Dave DEAR DAVE,

My 6-year old son has saved up $400. He said he wants to buy a motorcycle with it someday, but he recently changed his mind and wants to buy a computer tablet. Is it okay for him to change his mind like this, and how should I handle things?.

~Christina Dear Christina,

I’m not really concerned whether it’s a motorcycle or a tablet, especially if he’s saved his own money. I think the big thing we’re looking for in all this is a teachable moment.

Certainly regret is a concern, especially with a kid so young. But the reality is that neither the decision nor the possible regret afterward will ruin his life. If you talk to him and try to advise him beforehand, and he gets upset later because he feels like he made the wrong choice, it gives you the opportunity to step in and gently say, “I’m sorry you think you made a bad choice, but that’s why I wanted you to really think about it first. You had a chance to listen to mom’s wisdom and didn’t. I’m sorry you feel sad now, but I want you to remember it and learn something from this bad decision.” It’s a process of controlled pain and natural consequences.

One of my daughters did something similar years ago when we went to an amusement park. All the kids had a set amount of money for the day, and we warned them not to spend it too soon. She turned around and blew all her money on carnival games, then she spent the rest of the day whining while her brother and sister rode the rides and had lots of fun. We didn’t give her any more money, but a controlled amount of pain taught her some valuable lessons that day. She learned to listen to her mom and dad, she learned that carnival games are a rip-off, and she learned to control herself a little bit and think things through.

Allowing kids the emotional dignity of making some decisions for themselves is vitally important.

You just have to make sure this liberty is supervised and comes with parental warnings and protections. Just because they saved the money doesn’t mean they can do whatever they want. It still has to be used in a way that you, as a parent, are comfortable with and deem appropriate.

There will be some natural tension in the process, but it’s a great way to teach kids about money, decision making, maturity and life choices! ~Dave

HAPPENING ON THE HI-LINE THIS SPRING...

Jason Groseclose Memorial Tournament Friday-Sunday, March 21-23 Rudyard and Gildford, Montana

Jason Groseclose was a young man who had a deep sense of school pride. He lead by example in the classroom and on the playing field. Jason believed in scholastic and social development in becoming a wellrounded individual. The Jason Groseclose scholarship was created in order to help further the education of a North Star Graduate. This scholarship is funded by the Jason Groseclose Memorial fund.

Since 1996 the Jason Groseclose Memorial Scholarship fund has distributed approximately $40,000 in Athletic, Academic and related types of scholarships to students of North Star Schools. In memory of Jason, the fund holds a basketball tournament each year to raise funds for the scholarship awards.

This year’s Jason Groseclose Memorial tournament is a 16 team tournament to be conducted in the towns of Rudyard and Gildford. According to Bev Groseclose, Friday and Saturday games are set to be played in both Rudyard and Gildford, starting at 6:00 Friday, with four games in each gym. They will run on a continuous clock, so the games take about 1 hour to play. On Sunday, the games are in Rudyard, with the championship game at 3:00.
