CENTRAL MONTANA’S END OF SUMMER CELEBRATION by Jeanie Siggaard
School has started, harvest is about done, canning is in full swing, and gardeners are thinking of tucking in their garden beds for another long Montana winter. But don’t let the end-of-summer blues get you down. Why not make plans to hang out in central Montana for a weekend of fun, food, and hay bales? Lewistown’s 25th annual Chokecherry Festival, which brings to light the versatility of the wonderfully tart, small fruit, kicks off the farewell to summer event on Saturday, September 6th, with the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at 7 am. Take a stroll down the historic main street amid a variety of vendor booths, offering a multitude of homemade goodies, featuring the popular chokecherry. You are sure to discover the perfect gift among the myriad of vendors, displaying everything from arts and crafts, to children’s books and jewelry. Not into shopping? Activities abound, including the must see pit spitting (say that 3 times fast) contest. How far can you spit a pit? When the day is over, don’t rush off. Get a good night’s sleep because 23 miles west of Lewistown is the town of Hobson, the east entrance to the Montana Bale Trail and the “What The Hay” hay bale contest. Pick up a People’s Choice Ballot and vote for your favorite hay bale sculpture. The competition began in 1990 between two ranchers and has morphed into a major tourism event with entrants as far away as New York. The “Bale Trail” is a 21 mile trek between Hobson and Windham. Over 50 sculptures are expected this year. Halfway between Hobson and Windham is Utica and the Utica Day Fair: a one day festival held in conjunction with the “What The Hay” contest September 7th. The day starts with a 7:30 am breakfast and the fair opens at 10 am. Browse the many arts, crafts, and food vendors. Several raffle items, donated by vendors and the Utica Women’s Club, will be on display. A hand embroidered quilt, lovingly put together by members of the Women’s Club, is the grand prize. “Hamburgers and homemade pies are served all day. Just look for the log clubhouse. The pies are kind of our big thing,” says Carol Campbell, member of the Utica Women’s Club. Celebrate the end of summer with the people of Lewistown, Hobson, Utica, and Windham. You won’t regret it.

My little guy was out baling and with late evening approaching, it was time for the 4 year old to call it a day. As his personal chauffeur, I tracked him down in the hay field to retrieve him. When I got to the patch of hay they were working on, I saw that the baler was stopped and they had the back opened up. When you see this, it is the equivalent of popping a car’s hood. As I walked toward them, I saw that Rhetty was right over my brother’s shoulder watching every move and taking it all in . . . oh yeah, and offering a few pointers too. They were changing the roll of net wrap in the baler. Net wrap is like a big spool of Saran wrap made of . . . you guessed it . . . net!! The baler wraps each bale with the meshed wrap to hold the rolled up bale of hay together and then it kicks the packaged bale out the back of the baler. As my brother Shane worked on getting the new roll unwrapped and put into place, Rhetty was right there not missing a thing . . . waiting in the wings to be called on. He was holding a plastic container . . . ok clutching a square-ish bottle as if it were coca cola’s secret ingredient! He had obviously been instructed to “hold this” . . . and he was taking his responsibility very seriously. So, what is the special substance that my boy is holding onto so tightly?? You would think that has to be some high tech substance, a sophisticated, chemically engineered, baler lubricant . . . nope, just a little BABY POWDER!!! I know it is hard to believe, but bottoms of balers need baby powder too . . . and in the econo-size! The baby powder goes on the rollers of the baler to help the net wrap flow smoothly through. Shane continues to thread the wrap through . . . under Rhetty’s watchful eye. No pressure to get it right with Rhetty watching so intently and asking questions along the way. As Shane pulls the roll tight, a cloud of excess baby powder dusts the ground. The powder is working and the net wrap is threading through the rollers. It looks like we are back in business and almost ready to start baling again. But . . . it is getting late and Mom thinks Uncle Shane can probably handle things from here without the guidance of little baby powder distributor! So, my little guy and I head out across the field to call it a night . . . taking the trash with us as we go . . . and chattering about this day the entire way . . . so happy that we can have such important and helpful jobs and always be learning as we go. But, I have to say . . . I’ve powdered a lot of bottoms in my time . . . but putting baby powder on a baler’s bottom is a first! ~Lady & the Ranch To read more Lady and the Ranch, visit her blog about ranch and family life at www.ladyandtheranch.com.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor Political Science 501
Freshman level college classes typically are identified by numbers beginning in the 100s. For example, an entry level chemistry class would be designated General Chemistry 101. Similarly, sophomore classes began in the 200s, junior level in the 300s and senior studies in the 400s. The University of Wyoming is an outlier and in 1975, freshman level classes began in the 300s. I suspect this was because in the 1970s most graduates of Wyoming high schools were of such superior intellect they had a two year jump on everyone else, so it made sense to start with tier three studies. (I just love making the America haters scream.) At this instant somewhere in a Starbucks some unemployed, Ivy League liberal arts graduate buried in thousands of dollars of student loan debt just spilled their late` purchased with the dwindling resources remaining on their EBT card. So as not to lose them, I will use terminology with which they are most familiar. Today’s column, Political Science 501, contains graduate level thought seemingly contrary to teachings of

the ruling class. Ronald Reagan said “It’s not that my liberal friends are ignorant, it’s just that so much of what they know to be true just isn’t so.” Let me tell you what is true. Political scientists argue elections are won by capturing the votes in the middle of the spectrum. Their logic being right-wingers always vote right while left-wingers vote left, so ultimately it is the handful of independent voters in the middle who decide every election. This theory appears logical and is so commonly accepted it has reached the plateau of being considered conventional wisdom. It is also wrong; dead wrong and it is the intentional illusion keeping progressives in control of the political process. No free people would ever embrace liberalism, progressivism, or Marxism; chose your favorite moniker because all three are the same. During my four sessions in Montana’s House, leftists were in the minority three times and managed a 50-50 split in 2009. Yet, in spite of their minority numbers,
the progressives set the agenda every session because the timid liberal Republicans sought the support of this mythical, middle of the road group of independents by voting like Democrats. This exact thing happens in Congress. I am proof positive elected officials do not need to collapse to the middle to garner support. I launched my first campaign expressing my conservative beliefs in this column in 2006 and after eight years I have yet to moderate my views, mostly because they are right. To write something other than what I know to be true would be pandering. I was elected by three votes in 2006, 26 votes in 2008, 961 votes in 2010 and then 796 in 2012 all while voting in a manner consistent with my oath of office to support protect and defend the Constitution. Politicians who collapse to the center should be disqualified for positions requiring principled leadership. This concludes Political Science 501.

DEAR DAVE, What’s your advice on asking for a raise at work when you have more responsibility than a co-worker but the same title on paper? After being with my company four years, I feel like I should make more money and I have the right to complain about this.? ~Vanessa

Thank You Ag Wise! For purchasing my 4H Steer at the Great Northern Fair! Your support is greatly appreciated.... Katelin Harvey. 8-I
Dear Vanessa, Sorry, no. You don’t have a right to complain. You agreed on your pay, and you are doing your job the way your character and integrity tell you to do the job. If someone else is a slacker in the same position, that doesn’t mean a whole lot in terms of your personal compensation. I’ve got several people at my company who hold similar positions and make similar money. Some of them have been here for years, while others are relatively new. I don’t pay people for how long they’ve been in the building, and I don’t want anyone on my team who doesn’t give 100 percent. Now, that may be a different issue than pay, but at the same time I don’t want someone who gives 50 percent and I pay them 50 percent. I want everyone at 100 percent, but that kind of thing isn’t your problem. It’s the company’s problem, because she works for them and not you. If you honestly feel like you deserve a raise because of your effort and performance, that’s fine. Sit down with your leader and make a logical and reasonable argument for why you deserve more money. But don’t bring up your co-worker and what he or she makes in the discussion. That’s just not relevant. What is relevant is your worth and the value you bring to the organization. But a comparative analysis with someone else on staff just isn’t a good idea. I’d stay away from that, Vanessa. ~Dave Krause parts: And other parts at Power Motors Implement.
