Honey Bees: The Angels of Agriculture

Honey is big business in Montana with 14,946,000 pounds produced in 2013, making the Big Sky state the 2nd leading honey producer in the United States.

“Montana frequently ranks among the top five states for honey production,” says Cam Lay, State Entomologist for the Montana Department of Agriculture. “We have approximately 65-70 registered commercial and pollination apiaries.”

Simply put, an apiary is a place where multiple beehives or colonies of bees are kept for their honey. Apiaries are divided into four categories and must register their site with the Department of Agriculture by April 1st every year. According to Cam Lay, there are 5,375 registered apiary sites and approximately 165-180 thousand colonies statewide.

An apiary containing more than 5 hives and placed on a location with permission from the owner is classified as general or commercial. It must be located at least 3 miles from any other registered general apiary, thereby preventing the spread of disease or pests and enhancing the proper feeding of the honeybees.

Pollination apiaries, established for the purpose of pollinating commercial crops, have no restrictions regarding distance. Instead, the registration is for a specific period of time determined by the Department of Agriculture.

Apiaries registered to owners of the land they are situated on are designated as Landowner apiaries and have no restrictions on distance or the number of hives allowed on the site.

Hobbyist is the fourth type of apiary. These are set up on someone’s property by permission and are limited to less than 5 beehives with no distance restrictions.

Registration for the hobbyist is voluntary.

Bear Paw Apiary is one of several commercial apiaries steeped in the Montana tradition of creating and passing on a legacy. Originally located in Wolf Point, Bear Paw was started in 1954 by Doyle Anderson. In 1958, Doyle married Leona (Crants) Berglund and they operated the apiary together while raising a family. The couple relocated the business to Chinook, Montana in 1967, where it remains a thriving, family-owned business.

Today, Bear Paw Apiary, incorporated in 1992, is owned and operated by Wade and Carla Anderson. Ole and Vicki (Anderson) Brown joined the family operation as partners in 1992.

“Most of the marketing and distribution is done through the Sioux Honey Association, except for local business, such as landowner payments, etc.,” explains Wade Anderson.

The Sioux Honey Association, started in 1921 by five beekeepers near Sioux City, IA, in order to consolidate their resources, now boasts 300 members from around the country, collectively producing 40 million pounds of honey annually. Originally marketed under the “Sioux Bee” label, the spelling was changed in 1964 to the “Sue Bee” recognizable on grocery store shelves today.

Bear Paw Apiary and the Anderson family are active in the community, contributing to local events such as Montana Range Days and are one of the sponsors for the Chinook Sugarbeet Festival.

Buhmann Apiaries is another Blaine County apiary rich in family history.

Founded in 1918 by Lawrence and Reinhart Buhmann, Hermiston, Oregon was its original home. Reinhart married his sweetheart, Ruth Burrene Sprague, in 1920 and the couple welcomed the addition of two sons to the family. Tragically, Reinhart passed away in 1929, leaving his young family.

March of 1930 saw Ruth remarried to Reinhart’s brother Lawrence and they relocated the family business to Montana, just south of Fort Peck. When the dam was completed in 1937, the family was again transplanted. “That property is now under 120 feet of water,” explains grandson Robert “Rob” Buhmann. They put their roots deep in the fertile soil of Zurich, Montana, the present day home of Buhmann Apiaries.

Reinhart and Ruth’s son, Robert, after serving several years in the U.S. Army, including being deployed to Pearl Harbor just six days after the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, returned home in 1946 to Zurich. He married Phyllis Joan Kodalen from the Dodson area in 1947 and they worked tirelessly to expand the apiary. In 1974, they became members of the Sioux Honey Association, and in 2002, Robert received the Sioux Honey Association’s Pioneer Award for his efforts to advance honey production.

Today, Buhmann Apiaries is in the capable hands of Robert, the grandson of Reinhart and Ruth, Robert and Phyllis’s son, who together with wife Gloria, carry on the legacy. “We take the bees to California for almond pollination and for apple pollination, we head to Washington,” says Robert enthusiastically.

Fair Isaac Corporation’s newest FICO® credit scoring model will change certain aspects of how it computes the information on an individual’s credit report. The changes come in the wake of discussions with lenders and regulators looking to find ways to increase consumer lending without creating additional credit risks.

What do the changes mean for consumers?

These are some of the changes included in the FICO® Score 9 formula:

According to Fair Isaac Corporation, the changes to its scoring formula could result in some consumers receiving a FICO® Score increase of up to 25 points. Even small credit score increases may help consumers qualify for better interest rates from lenders (although other factors are also considered).

Fair Isaac Corporation isn’t the only credit scoring company that has adjusted the calculations for its credit scoring formula. A lesser known company, VantageScore Solutions, already has a credit scoring formula that does not include paid collections on its credit reports. Other credit scoring companies may follow suit and make adjustments to their credit scoring calculations.

Fair Isaac Corporation hopes to begin releasing the software for FICO® Score 9 in the fall. However, it is up to individual lenders whether or not to upgrade to the newer version. As a result, it may take some time to gauge whether the changes will have an impact on consumer lending.

Nap Time

When I was five, I resisted naps. Unfortunately, I exhausted myself fighting with my mother trying to convince her I did not need a nap. I now admit I was wrong, and today I relish stretching out to reboot my hard drive. I can get a great power nap in less than ten minutes and I wish I could pass my enlightenment on to my grandchildren.

Several years back my four-year-old granddaughter, Mae, was staying with us. One afternoon, Mae and Jess, the baby sitter, were negotiating nap time through the closed bedroom door. The discipline program in use at the time consisted of reward cards placed in either an envelope bearing a smiley face or another displaying a not-so-smiley face.

Follow orders and a card would be placed in the smiley faced envelope; resist and the card went in the opposite envelope.

If you were particularly obstinate, cards could actually be moved from the smiley to the frown envelope with your reward at the end of the day dictated by the final envelope score. With Mae refusing to nap Jess threatened, “If you do not get to bed right now I am going to move a card to the frown envelope.”

When my 12 grandchildren visit, the nap time battle intensifies. Forcing your will upon someone is challenging and those of us in the political arena are engaged in a similar battle; trying to place an ideology to bed. Like four-year-olds, the resistance is disconnected and illogical, but the opposition fights like a cornered badger because they have bet all their marbles on a single issue. Presenting solid data contrary to their hypothesis merely strengthens their resolve; all while publicly claiming they are champions of compromise. They are a juvenile bunch.

Knowing low information voters will do anything out of fear, Secretary of State John Kerry recently claimed climate change presents a greater threat to civilization than does the horrific massmurders by ISIS. Their entire hypothesis is junk science promoted by those lining their wallets perpetuating the myth.

By selectively publishing data which supports the hoax and burying data contrary to the state sponsored scam, the illusion is created our planet is warming, the polar ice caps are melting and major weather disasters are increasing. It is all a lie.

Joining a long list of work proving the contrary, Dr. Ross McKittrick at the University of Guelph recently published a paper using satellite data showing the earth’s lower troposphere has not warmed in 26 years. Because this non-warming and growth of polar ice caps occurred in the face of atmospheric carbon dioxide climbing from 354 parts per million (ppm) in 1990 to 400 ppm today, logic dictates the entire climate change hypothesis must be called into question.

It won’t be; the hysteria refuses to be put to bed and here is why.

Opposition to the Keystone Pipeline, incandescent light bulbs, hydro and coal-fired electricity generation and the promotion of wind energy, solar power, the Chevy Volt, compact fluorescent light bulbs, cash-for-clunkers, and cash-for-Kelvinators all rely on a single myth. The left’s entire political machine collapses once the truth is known.

No wonder they refuse to put the issue down for a nap.

Progressives argue environmental consequences are too severe to do nothing, so the unwashed must surrender to the ruling class. Asking Questions

Jack and Max are walking in the hallway after a religious service. Jack wonders if it would be all right to smoke while praying.

Max replies, “Why don’t you ask the rabbi?”

Try eating out only on special occasions, drink water as your beverage and don’t be afraid to use coupons in restaurants, either. When it comes to buying clothes, make a habit of checking out the sale rack first. You can shop at thrift and consignment stores, and sell the clothes you don’t wear anymore.

With entertainment, use dollar-off and buy-one-get-one-free coupons whenever you can. See a matinee or a second-run movie, and if you’re going somewhere with a bunch of people, call ahead and ask for a group discount. You’ll be amazed at how much money these tactics will save! ~Dave DEAR DAVE,

CHOKECHERRIES

We have become a nation of pill takers. One has to wonder if our genetics date back to Ponce de Leon, and we are all still looking for the “Fountain of Youth”. Well, folks, “You ain’t gonna find it in them thar’ pills.”

I fully understand there are pills that make our lives better, but when we go beyond the pills the doctor ordered, we really don’t know what effect we’re causing in our bodies. Makers of over-the-counter pills and potions aren’t subject to the same control as prescription drugs. They might say they are pharmaceutical quality, but without oversight that’s hard to prove. Now, Chokecherry Jelly let me quote the first paragraph of a research paper published online on August 25, 2014 in 5 cups chokecherry juice plus ½ tsp. butter ‘Hepatology’: “Unregulated herbal or dietary (to reduce foaming) supplements used by bodybuilders and by ¼ cup lemon juice middle-aged women trying to lose weight 1 pkg. SureJell pectin (Stir into juice before heating.) have become increasingly important as causes of liver injury over the course of the last 10 to boil on high heat, stir constantly, years.” There is a lot more interesting reading Bring boil for 1 minute then add 7 cups sugar. in the report, but it’s too long to repeat it all here. My mantra for a healthy diet is variety (to reduce foaming) and moderation. I have had multiple failures 1 pkg. SureJell pectin on the moderation aspect but I do quite well 1 cup corn syrup on variety. The last couple of weeks I have 3 cups sugar been making jam and jelly out of rhubarb, chokecherries and crabapples. Yes, I know there Mix juice, pectin and corn syrup and bring to boil over high heat. Add sugar and boil 2 is a lot of sugar in them, but they are loaded with aminutes longer. Put in sterilized jars and seal. valuable micronutrients and 1 tablespoon is a serving. Besides, good health requires exercise and exercise requires carbs for energy. So, have Chokecherry Pie a tablespoon of jam on a slice of whole wheat toast, then get off your butt and go to work.

There are a lot of recipes out there 2 cups chokecherry juice for rhubarb and crabapples, but I have had 3 Tbsp. cornstarch sugar trouble finding chokecherry recipes that work 1¼cup tsp. salt until my granddaughter Brenda gave me some ½ tsp. Almond extract from Lewistown, the Chokecherry Capital of Montana. If you want to do much jelly I would Mix all together and cook, stirring constantly recommend you get a steam juicer; you will until thick and clear. Cool slightly, then pour into a baked 9” pie shell. Top with Cool love it.
