A Future for Hemp in the U.S.?

The United States imports all industrial hemp from Canada, China, and Europe, locking the American farmer out of an estimated $450 million retail market. Montana is one of fifteen states that have legalized the commercial production of hemp, but putting it into practice is an uphill battle.

With the passage of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, which failed to make the distinction between hemp and marijuana, the once thriving U.S. hemp industry came to a grinding halt. Today, America is the only industrialized nation that prohibits the commercial production of hemp while importing more than any other country.

Even with the passage of the Farm Bill early this year, which included a watered-down provision allowing universities and agricultural departments in states where hemp production was already approved to grow it for research purposes, the problem persists; cultivation of industrial hemp is illegal.

Congress has two bills pending that would legalize industrial hemp; House Resolution 525 and the Industrial Hemp Act of 2013. Although the passage of the hemp amendment is seen as a positive step, proponents admit the fight is made problematic by hemp’s inseparable association with marijuana.

Marijuana and hemp come from the species of plant known as Cannabis sativa L. This is where the similarities end. Just as the species Canis lupus includes several sub-species from dachshunds to wolves, marijuana and hemp are two different plants of the same species with distinctly different properties.

Industrial hemp grows well in a variety of conditions and its commercial uses are endless. It is found in clothing, rope, auto parts, construction and insulation materials, paper, lotions, soaps, (the Dr. Bronner’s Soaps company uses 20 tons of hemp oil, imported from Canada, every year) and a variety of other products.

You can find hemp milk, hemp protein powder and bars on store shelves. Hemp can be grown in rotation with other crops such as corn and legumes, and ethanol made from hemp burns cleanly, making it an excellent source for alternative fuel.

What industrial hemp cannot be used for is a “high”, as it is not able to produce enough tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC for short. This is the active chemical that produces the stimulating effects of marijuana. Hemp contains 0.3%-1.5% THC. In comparison, marijuana contains 5%-10% or more. It takes at least 3% to achieve the desired effect, and higher quality marijuana preferred for drug use typically contains 10%-15%.

Misinformation and prejudice abound in our country, despite the fact that we currently use industrial hemp products in our everyday lives. The challenge for American farmers who want to add hemp to their portfolio of commercial crops is to educate and overcome existing prejudices. They must decide if industrial hemp is financially viable and if the road to legalization is worth the struggle.

A few years back, Tricia’s Trader featured a local up-and-coming author, Dawn Colby of Chinook, and her then soon-to-be released book “True Love Ignited”. In the Beginning

Growing up my mother would ask me to take out the trash, and I’d do it. I would hear my name again, “Dawn Rae, go help your dad in the garden.” Of course, I would do it. Then there were the times that I was distracted--watching TV or talking with friends—that made it more difficult to hear my name being called.

As a child of God’s, I didn’t want anything to interfere with the plan and purpose He had for my life. Just as I could hear my mom’s voice, I was learning to listen for God’s voice. One day, during my devotions I heard God loud and clear, “I want you to write a book.” As a child, I found every excuse why this request was utterly impossible.

There is a trait that children have that most adults begin to forget, that of asking questions, the greatest gateway to learning. I didn’t have answers, so I started asking questions. What does the book need to be about?

This adventure started as a journey, but it ended as a treasure hunt. Each phase of the treasure hunt came to light only when the phase before it was complete. This is exactly how the book was written. Each person can start their own treasure hunt as they read and apply the concepts in the book, True Love Ignited.

My first treasure hunt ended in a published book. Now, I find myself on another treasure hunt even more adventurous than the first.

I’ve been invited by two ministries to speak in India: by James and Sarah Rebbavarapu of India Christian Ministries, and Raj Paul of Faith India Ministries. They have invited me to speak to their women.

For the past year, I have been prompted to speak value, hope, courage and identity to women from the lessons I’ve learned in my life’s struggles. I have done so through an event called, “The Feasting Table” that has been held both in Havre and Chinook. We plan to use this ministry in India as well.

It was a treat to see all of the athletes working on the skills needed for their individual events. After a brief visit with the coaches and a few of the team members, I was pleased to hear the team is doing well. The MSU-N Rodeo Team is part of the NIRA (National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association) and competes in the Big Sky Region. As of September 24, the MSU-N Men’s Team is 9th and the Women’s team is 8th in the Big Sky Region standings. With Colton Henderson’s win at the Miles City Stampede, he now ranks fourth in Saddle Bronc; Alan Gobert came in second in the long round, short round, and the average for Bull Riding. With the fall season winding down and spring months away, I look forward to seeing where the team will rank after they’ve had their away competition at UM-Western. However, just because they may not be competing against other colleges for a few months doesn’t mean they won’t be busy with school, Cowboy Christmas, clinics, practice, and the Bull Dazzle this spring. Let’s continue to show them how much the Hi Line community supports them at all their future events, and I’ll see you in the stands.

It’s For the Children

Obamacare is no more about care than climate change is about climate; both are euphemisms intended to persuade the unwashed to surrender to the wishes of the ruling class. Similarly, the mantra “it’s for the children,” is not for the children at all. To the contrary, today it is used to cleave the parent / child bond and shift the rearing of children to the collective. Progressives are crafty bastards, but their trickery does not fool me because I learned the truth years ago.

God blessed me with three children and each taught me something, but it was number three, Tyler, who truly schooled me about parenting. It was October of 1991 and I was installing a wood stove in our new house.

Earlier that morning, the trophy wife had delivered Meagan and Chelsie to school and Tyler, our three-yearold, to the sitter’s. I finished up about 9:00 a.m. and hopped in my pickup to race to the clinic. As I pulled onto 12th Street, I noticed a small child stomping my direction in the middle of the road. He was wearing green Ninja Turtle pajamas and bedroom slippers and his non-verbal clues indicated he was mad. It was Tyler. I rolled down my window and asked “Where are you going?” He was in no mood for conversation and without glancing up he kept marching home. Here is why.

Our summer house project had been a labor intensive family event and for the previous four months

Tyler and his sisters had been driving nails, pulling nails, spilling paint, or packing off tools; excitement he preferred over spending all day at the baby sitter’s, so he sprinted home at his first chance. We lectured, disciplined, and negotiated, but his habit at the sitter’s eventually became blink and he’s gone. It was only a half-mile trek home, and today’s First Lady warns there are fat kids everywhere, so the exercise was good, but his route home crossed the Big Ditch; a body of water with the history of snuffing the life of small children. We faced a parenting dilemma.

For the rest of October, Tyler would start sobbing an hour prior to going to the sitter and we tried everything to fix the problem. Well-meaning friends provided us popular parenting-advice magazines written by experts; mostly adolescent psychologists who do not have children.

Finally, one morning I had enough and declared, “This is insane. Life should be simple when you are three and from now on, Tyler will ride with me.” So he did.

My veterinary practice was two years old and I spent many days rattling up and down country roads on farm calls. Tyler immediately took to his new routine, quickly studying each new place we visited for swing-sets or sand boxes suggesting the presence of children. He knew our time was short before we were off to the next call, so he made friends fast. This doctor-son arrangement continued until Tyler

started school two and a half years later and they were the best years of my life. Later in grade school, Tyler would occasionally ask, “Dad, can I ride with you on calls this Saturday?” He needed to talk, so he rode with me and we talked. Sadly, those days are gone. Tyler is an engineer, married and has two little escapees of his own. The fields of western Yellowstone County are growing subdivisions, strip malls and casinos rather than corn, so my road time is considerably less than it was in 1991. This brings me to my point.

A parent’s time with their children is incredibly short and for the ruling class to shorten it even more is criminal.

Montana’s Governor Steve Bullock is spinning his new Pre-Kindergarten program as being “for the children”. It is not. Costing $37 million every two years, this program empowers the ruling class and teacher union leadership at the expense of three and four-year olds. The children do not belong to the community, they belong to their parents and they reach their greatest potential only when they spend their younger years with their parents. I will not be in the 2015 legislative session to reject this taking of our children, but I trust there are those I left behind who will.

Working women Increasingly, families depend on the income of two working parents. If you’re a working mother, your income can have a significant impact on the quality of your family’s lifestyle. Your income helps cover the cost of ordinary living expenses such as food, clothing, and utilities, and it provides savings for your children’s college education, and for your retirement. Life insurance protects your family by providing proceeds that can be used to replace your lost income if you die prematurely.

Single women Often, women, like men, think that it’s not necessary to buy life insurance because they have no dependents. What’s often overlooked is that life insurance can provide necessary funds to pay off car loans, education loans, debts, a mortgage, taxes, and funeral expenses that might otherwise be the responsibility of family members. Also, the cash value of permanent life insurance may be used to supplement retirement income.

Single moms Whether you’re divorced, widowed, or simply a single mom, you’re most likely primarily responsible for your child’s support. If you die prematurely, life insurance can provide ongoing income to cover child-care costs, medical expenses, debts, and future college costs.

Stay-at-home moms Maintaining a household is a full-time job, and you have many important roles and duties. The cost of the services performed by a stay-at-home mom could be quite significant if someone had to be hired to do them. If you die, your surviving spouse may have to pay for services such as child care, transportation for your children, and housekeeping. Taking over these added responsibilities could cause your spouse to shorten work hours, resulting in a reduction in income. Proceeds from your life insurance can help your spouse pay for services that keep the household running and allow your spouse to keep working.

Family caregiver Many women find themselves providing care for both children and elderly family members. Caring for an aging parent or family member can include paying for the costs of adult day care, uninsured medical expenses, and extra transportation. Adding these expenses to the costs of maintaining a household, child care, and college tuition can be financially overwhelming. Unfortunately, these added financial responsibilities often continue after your death. Life insurance provides a source of funds that can be used to help pay for these expenses.

Business owner You may be one of the increasing number of women business owners. If you die while owning your business, life insurance can be used to provide cash for company expenses such as payroll or operating costs while your estate is being settled. Also, life insurance can be a useful tool for business owners structuring buy-sell arrangements or providing benefits to key employees.

Life insurance types and options Life insurance comes in many different sizes and shapes, and determining the policy that meets your needs may depend on a number of factors.

Understanding the basic types of life insurance can help you find the policy that’s appropriate for you.

Term life insurance Term life insurance provides a simple death benefit for a specified period of time. If you die during the coverage period, the beneficiary you name in the policy receives the death benefit. If you live past the term period, your coverage

ends, and you get nothing back. The cost, or premium, for the coverage can be fixed for the duration of the policy term (usually 1 to 30 years) or it can be “annually renewable” meaning that the premium can increase each year as you get older. However, the premium for term insurance usually costs less than the premium for permanent insurance when all factors are the same, including the death benefit.

Whole life insurance Whole life is permanent or cash value insurance that provides insurance coverage for your entire life. With most whole life policies, part of your premium is added to the cash value account, which earns interest. Some whole life policies also pay a dividend, which represents a portion of the company’s profits made during the prior year.

The cash value grows tax deferred and can either be used as collateral to borrow from the insurance company or be directly accessed through a partial or complete surrender of the policy. It is important to note, however, that a policy loan or partial surrender will reduce the policy’s death benefit, there could be income tax implications, and a complete surrender will terminate coverage altogether.

Note: Guarantees are subject to the claims-paying ability and financial strength of the issuing insurance company.

Universal life insurance Universal life is another type of permanent life insurance with a death benefit and a cash value account. A universal life insurance policy will generally provide very broad premium guidelines (i.e., minimum and maximum premium payments), but within these guidelines you can choose how much and when you pay premiums. You are also free to change the policy’s death benefit directly (again, within the limits set out by the policy) as your financial circumstances change. But if you want to raise the amount of coverage, you’ll need to go through the insurability process again, probably including a new medical exam, and your premiums will increase.

Variable life insurance Variable life insurance is a type of cash value coverage that allows you to choose how your cash value account is invested. A variable life policy generally contains several investment options, or subaccounts, that are professionally managed to pursue a stated investment objective. Choices can range from a fixed interest subaccount to an international growth subaccount. Variable life insurance policies require a fixed annual premium for the life of the policy and may provide a minimum guaranteed death benefit. If the cash value exceeds a certain amount, the death benefit will increase.

Variable universal life insurance Variable universal life combines all of the options and flexibility of universal life with the investment choices of a variable policy. You decide how often and how much your premium payments are to be, within policy guidelines. With most variable universal life policies, you can direct how your premium payments are invested among policy subaccounts. But you get no guaranteed minimum cash value or death benefit, and the investment return and principal value of the investment options will fluctuate. .

Joint and survivor life insurance You and your spouse may choose to buy a single policy of permanent insurance that covers both of your lives. With first-to-die, the death benefit is paid at the death of the spouse who dies first. With second-to-die, no death benefit is paid until both spouses are deceased. Second-to-die policies are commonly used in estate planning to pay estate taxes and other expenses due at the death of the second spouse. Other than the fact that two people are insured by one policy, the policy characteristics remain the same.

Bottom line Life insurance protection for women is equally as important as it is for men. However, women’s life insurance coverage is often inadequate. It may be time to consult an insurance professional who can help you assess your life insurance needs, and offer information about the various types of policies available.

A trucker came into a truck stop cafe and placed his order.

Some friends recently offered me a timeshare. It’s an older place on the beach, and they’ve had it for about 20 years. I’d have to pay a transfer fee of $100, plus a yearly association fee of $500. I know you’re not a big fan of timeshares, but does this deal sound okay? ~Jill Dear Jill,

In essence, you’re looking at $500 a week. I know the $500 is technically an annual association fee, but you’re basically paying $500 for your week at the timeshare.

And in the future, say five years from now, the association fee could increase. You might be paying $1,000 a year at that point — again, for your week.

In actuality, the numbers you’re talking about right now aren’t completely terrible.

Still, it’s not a huge blessing. In my mind it’s kind of like, “How would you like a kick in the knee that’s not too hard?”

If it were me, I’d much rather spend my $500 a year on travel and be able to go and stay wherever I wanted. Not only does this free you up it that area, but you’d only spend the money when and if you did it. With a timeshare, you get charged whether you show up or not.

This one’s not as bad as if you’d have to pay $8,000 for the opportunity. But if these were my friends making the offer, I’d have to say no thanks. ~Dave For Sale: Three well maintained rental properties located in an area where rentals are a high demand!
