If I Die First... Now that they are retired, my mother and father are discussing all aspects of their future. “What will you do if I die before you do?” Dad asked Mom. After some thought, she said that she’d probably look for a house-sharing situation with three other single or widowed women who might be a little younger than herself, since she is so active for her age. Then Mom asked Dad, “What will you do if I die first?” He replied, “Probably the same thing.” Patty's Helping Hands: Cleaning -- Babysitting -- Elder Care. Will travel. A few years back, Tricia’s Trader featured a local up-and-coming author, Dawn Colby of Chinook, and her then soon-to-be released book “True Love Ignited”. Since the time of its launch, Colby’s book journey has forked and turned, and now leads her in unexpected directions. She has graciously offered to share the next part of her adventure with our readers. To learn more about Dawn, visit her website http://ignitedlove.tateauthor.com.
My name is Dawn Colby. I am an event planner and stay-athome mom from Chinook, active in my church, and excited to walk out in faith on a whole new level. Sarah Schellin Rebbavarapu is a Class of ’94 Chinook Sugarbeeter from here on the Hi-Line. The desire of her heart since her teen years was to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ and true love, care, and provision to orphans in India. She and her husband James established Sarah’s Covenant Homes to take in abandoned orphans with special needs in India, and they’ve been doing so for years now, impacting the lives of hundreds of orphans. They take in fragile children of all ages and types of disabilities and place them in a home-like setting with loving, Christian foster parents and ministry staff. They raise funds for the medical operations, wheelchairs, and other needs of the children. Each child has a unique and demanding range of needs. Their caregivers are full of an endless supply of love…but no one’s energy supply is endless. I have felt a strong pull to India, and so have my dear friends Heather Baird and Marcy Nelson. India, with the second largest population in the world, is in much need of hope. The people there live in very rough and dangerous conditions. They are smart, but many industries have been stripped away due to various agendas. Now can be the time for them to rise up and understand they don’t have to live their lives just as they always have. If our little team of three women can bring hope and courage to women and children in India, to rejuvenate the spirits of the foster parents, pastors’ wives, and women support workers at Sarah’s Covenant Homes, we know that they will in turn be able to offer rejuvenated love, care and hope to the children. We’ll be putting together women’s faith events for them, based around women’s faith events we have done on the Montana Hi-Line which we’ve called “The Feasting Table”. Little miracles and coincidences, and a lot of prayer brought Heather, Marcy, and I together to answer this call and plan this journey to help women and children with big hearts and big needs in a unique way. We’ll also be providing them with funds for food and supplies. We’re excited to see how the Lord brings everything together. We welcome you to learn more and become part of this! Contact us at www.facebook. com/IgnitedL or contact one of us personally to get involved. The Book of Esther serves as an inspiration to us. At Esther 7:3(NLV), “Queen Esther answered, ‘If I have found favor in your eyes, O king, and if it please the king, I ask that my life and the lives of my people be saved.’” One faithful woman was able to save her people. We believe that three average women of faith from the Hi-Line can bring some inspiration and renewed purpose to women in India who work with very special children with disabilities. Believe! ~Dawn

ATTENTION 401(K) PARTICIPANTS: CONSISTENCY MAY PAY OFF, STUDY FINDS Despite the stock market drops of 2008, the average account balance of 401(k) participants who continued investing during the five-year period ending December 31, 2012, grew by a compound average annual rate of 6.8%, according to a study released jointly by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and the Investment Company Institute (ICI). The study, “What Does Consistent Participation in 401(k) Plans Generate? Changes in 401(k) Account Balances, 20072012,” analyzed 7.5 million 401(k) plan participants in the EBRI/ICI 401(k) database who participated in their plans consistently throughout the five-year period, comparing their results with the broader database of 24 million participants. The broader database also includes those who had enrolled in or dropped out of their plans during that time frame. “This research provides a meaningful analysis of the potential for 401(k) participants to accumulate retirement assets because it examines how a consistent group of participants’ 401(k) accounts change over time,” said Sarah Holden, senior director of retirement and investor research at the ICI. Over the analyzed period, the average account balance for consistent participants grew from $77,049 at the end of 2007 to $107,053 at year-end 2012; this was significantly higher than the 2012 average
balance of the broader group ($63,929). The median account balance for consistent participants at the end of 2012 was $49,814, almost three times higher than the median balance of the larger group ($17,630). “The research highlights that contributing and investing in a 401(k) plan consistently results in higher average account balances than the average balance for all plan participants,” Holden said. Growth rates took several factors into consideration, including employer and employee contributions, investment returns, withdrawals, and loans. Getting granular A closer examination of the figures illustrates the potential benefits of consistent participation. As of December 31, 2012, over 30% of the consistent participants had more than $100,000 in their 401(k) accounts, compared with just 18% of the broader group. Most participants had at least a portion of their assets invested in stocks, either through stock funds, target-date funds, balanced funds, or company stock. Perhaps not surprisingly, younger participants tended toward higher stock allocations than older participants. The stock market drop notwithstanding, participant exposure to equities and target date funds among consistent participants changed only slightly during the five-year period. (Note that asset
allocation is a method used to help manage investment risk; it does not guarantee a profit or protect against investment loss.) Target-date fund usage on the rise The share of consistent participants who included target-date funds in their portfolios rose from 27.6% to 32.1% between year-end 2007 and year-end 2012. While all age groups experienced slight increases in the usage of target-date funds, middle-aged folks (those in their 40s and 50s) saw the largest boost. Among the entire EBRI/ICI database, the use of target-date funds rose substantially, from 25.1% at year-end 2007 to 41% by year-end 2012. The study’s authors surmised that the rise was due in part to the increase in auto-enrollment and the use of target-date funds as the default investment, as well as the overall boost in plans offering target-date funds as an option. In a target-date fund, the target date is the approximate date upon which an investor plans to withdraw money. The mix of investments in the target-date fund becomes conservative as the date grows closer. The principal value is not guaranteed at any time, including the target date. There is no guarantee that a target-date fund will meet its stated objectives. It is important to note that no two target-date funds with the same target date are alike.

CRAMPS SOLUTION
For any of you who suffer from occasional muscle cramps, I have developed a formula that really helps. Give it a try, you won’t be sorry. Since I have let my EMT certification expire, I no longer qualify as a medical professional, therefore the name VooDoo juice--I now qualify as a Witch Doctor. ~Bill I will list the ingredients, then explain what each one is for. The measurements aren’t critical; just come close or adjust for taste. It works well prophylactically, so if you suspect you might get muscle cramps in the night, before going to bed take a tablespoon full and swish it around in your mouth for 5 seconds before swallowing. Then, if you wake up with cramps take another swallow. The VooDoo juice won’t always totally prevent cramps, but they will be much milder and will resolve much more quickly than without it. You can also drink a glass of water along with it as it will help with the dehydration. If you get a cramp while awake swish the first shot 5 seconds before swallowing as it will absorb faster that way. You can also pour a little on a wash cloth and rub it on the cramped muscle and it will help relieve the pain. Bill’s VooDoo Juice Cramps are caused by several different conditions 1 cup apple cider vinegar (dehydration, poor circulation and a shortage of potassium, 2 cups chicken broth (low sodium if you like, as you will get sodium with the lite salt) magnesium, calcium and sodium) due mostly to losses from heavy 1 tsp. Lite Salt (for the potassium chloride and sodium chloride in it) sweating, so this mixture is an attempt to cover all the different 1/2 tsp. Epsom salt (for the magnesium) causes. 1 tsp. garlic powder The ginger helps relax the muscles and blood vessels. 1 tsp. ground ginger The garlic makes the blood less sticky for better circulation. The Epsom salt and Light salt are to replace the minerals The chicken Put all in a container that will hold it, and shake to blend. (It will separate, so you will have to broth contains calcium and helps mute the vinegar flavor; it is shake it each time you use it.) okay to use more or less of it to taste. The vinegar (acid) helps keep the minerals in suspension and improves absorption. Hope it works for ya. ~Bill P.S. For those of you who don’t know what lite salt is, you can find it alongside of the regular salt in the spice section at your grocery store. If it isn’t there, ask a store employee. *An emulsifier would keep the ingredients from separating but most emulsifiers contain fats and fats would slow down absorption. Mustard is a good emulsifier without the fat so I might try it, but I haven’t worked on that problem yet.

DAVE SAYS:
Who Is Dave Ramsey?
Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others. * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books: Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover, EntreLeadership and Smart Money Smart Kids. His newest best-seller, Smart Money Smart Kids, was written with his daughter Rachel Cruze, and recently debuted at #1. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8 million listeners each week on more than 500 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.
DEAR DAVE, Can you explain the “asset allocation” theory when it comes to investing? ~Matthew Dear Matthew, The asset allocation theory is one touted by lots of people in the financial community. It’s also a theory with which I disagree. In short, the asset allocation theory means that you invest aggressively while you’re young. Then as you get older, you move toward less aggressive funds. If you follow this theory to the letter, you’re left pretty much with money markets and bonds by the time you’re 65. The reason I don’t believe in this theory is simple. It doesn’t work. If you live to age 65 and are in good health, there’s a high statistical likelihood that you’ll make it to 95. The average age of death for males in this country is now 76, but that includes infant mortality and teenage deaths. So, a healthy 65-year-old man in America can look at having another quarter century on earth. If you move your money to bonds and money markets at age 65, inflation is going to kick your tail. Your money will grow slower than it will devalue, and you’ll have little purchasing power. That’s the problem with the asset allocation methodology. I advise investing in good, growth stock mutual funds that have strong track records of at least five to ten years. Spread your money across four types of funds: growth, growth and income, aggressive growth and international. These groups provide diversification across risk, as well as a little splash overseas. Great question, Matthew! ~Dave DEAR DAVE, My husband makes about $35,000 a year before taxes, and we have one child. We’ve also got a mortgage and $60,000 in student loan debt. About a year ago, my husband started work on a master’s degree, because he thinks he wants to teach when he retires. He quit school after the baby was born, because he didn’t think we could afford it any longer. I think he should finish the degree. Otherwise, he’s just throwing away the $10,000 we’ve already got invested in the program. What do you think? ~Amanda Dear Amanda, You guys need to clean up the mess you’ve made before he goes after his master’s degree. You might be able to justify it if the degree immediately raised his income, but you two can’t afford to make investments in vague educational goals right now. If you want to call it throwing the money away, then yeah, throw it away. But I’m not sure the money has been wasted. The classes he has already taken are complete and on record, so why can’t he finish the degree somewhere down the road? You guys have done a poor job of planning, and now you need to climb out of a big hole before you do anything else. The point is not the $10,000, Amanda. The point is that you’re barely making ends meet. You’ve already got a house payment and $60,000 in student loan debt hanging over your heads, not to mention the added expense of a baby in the house. The last thing you need is to go even deeper into debt for something he won’t even use until retirement. That’s just silly. I’m all for education, but you’ve got to plan things and get a better payback on your educational spending. That’s when it becomes an investment. But he doesn’t need to even think about a master’s degree until you guys have first straightened out your finances! ~Dave

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58
Trust but Verify Would you agree trust is the most important factor in every relationship whether it be social, familial or business? As it is nearly impossible to regain once it is lost, a wise person guards their word, yet the government does not. Characteristically, the ruling class draws my attention today. For a veterinarian to sign health certificates or Bangs vaccinate heifers requires special accreditation. When I graduated vet school in 1983 and passed a USDA exam, a simple training session secured your life-long endorsement to perform this regulatory work. As I recently learned, the only thing life-long about government are the programs themselves; veterinarians must now re-certify every three years. The procedure is relatively painless to normal veterinarians, but it pegs the tolerance meter of those of us repulsed by government intrusion. Apparently, my four sessions in Montana’s House has sensitized me. My accreditation was set to expire at the end of October, so last week I downloaded and read the six training modules, took the test, filled out the form and became recertified. It sounds painless, but it wasn’t. The module addressing foreign animal diseases drove me insane as it stressed the importance of obtaining a thorough history when investigating a suspicious animal disease. “Has anyone recently visited a foreign country,” was suggested as an appropriate question. Now, let’s let that incubate a moment while I tie this to a real-life example of regulatory medicine.
In August, a livestock broker from Canada requested I do the lab tests and issue an international health certificate for the shipment of 12, male, Boer goats from Texas into Canada. This would require a 21 day quarantine in Montana, an import permit, Brucellosis and TB testing and about two dozen phone calls. Sadly for me, the broker called on our only slow day in August, so I accepted the job. Over my 30 years, I have done this enough to know international health certificates can be rejected for critical things like misspelled words, so I go to great lengths to be certain every detail is correct. This time I missed one. The regulations state alpha-numeric tattoos are acceptable permanent ID, but either they were just kidding, or one particular border agent prefers USDA metal ID tags. Either way, the ruling authority forced me to re-tag all 12 goats and then re-issue lab work coordinating the new tags with the alpha-numeric tattoos previously used. While visiting with Michelle, the very nice USDA representative in Helena, I expressed my disgust with Canadian health certificates. “This is nothing,” she offered. “You should see the nightmare of paperwork to get critters into Mexico.” Remember this when you think about the thousands of illegal immigrants and possible terrorists flooding our southern border. Recent news reports claim the federal government has secretly shipped these illegals into every state in America, which would be against USDA rules if they were animals but is apparently okay with
humans. Could these shipments be related to a surge in respiratory infections caused by Enterovirus D68; recently claiming the life of a four-year-old New Jersey boy. My recertification training suggests we should ask, “Has your son recently visited a foreign country, or possibly have citizens of foreign nations recently visited your community?” Let that question incubate, while I jump again. What do you know about the Ebola virus? Is it highly contagious and truly a health threat? Can you be vaccinated against it? In terms of air travel, why is it more dangerous to carry seven ounces of toothpaste in your luggage than to crawl on board leaking Ebola virus through your bodily fluids? Obviously, the government is lying and this finally brings me to my point. The ruling class has proven they will lie, cheat and steal to get the unwashed to submit. Their credibility is at zero; exactly where it belongs. Trust, but verify only works if you have the knowledge to verify. Never forget, the only backside about which the ruling class is concerned is their own.
