In the free-market, buyers and sellers set the price of an item based on the underlying desires of each party to possess the said product or service.

If the seller is more eager than the buyer, or there is an abundance of the product, the price goes down. Conversely, if the buyer craves a rare item, the price goes up. Countries operating in a freemarket environment prosper until government steps in and manipulates the transaction so as to select the socially preferred winners and losers. For example, beginning in 1776, Americans enjoyed 125 years of mostly unhindered growth, but to implement the collectivism espoused by Marx, free-market capitalism had to be driven away. America began her slow death spiral away from freedom in the early 1900s. Recent headlines reveal our transition from the prosperity of the free-market into debt and dependency of collectivism is nearly complete thanks to the efforts of the ruling class.

Column one Drudge Report headlines on May 8th reveal a record 58 million working age Americans are no longer employed; a feature common and promoted as the ideal in collective economies.

By their logic, unemployment eliminates job lock. The second shoe drops with a news story in column two. The Government Accountability Office revealed the Department of Defense is proudly spending $150 per gallon for “green” jet fuel produced from algae; an amount 52 times higher than the $2.88 market price for jet fuel from conventional carbon sources. If this sounds insane and it should, you obviously need additional indoctrination to understand the wonders of Marxism.

After four terms on the Montana House floor I am no longer shocked by the twisted reasoning of those advancing collectivism over capitalism.

Without reviewing the Congressional record, I will guarantee Marxist congressmen arguing for climate change mandates championed such regulation as actually being a jobs bill for algae producers and university professors. Republicans in the liberty caucus of the GOP may have shaken their heads in disbelief, but those in the cocktail caucus quickly voted with the Democrats to enact these bio-fuel mandates. The end result being, Joe the plumber, if he is lucky enough to find a job, will need to work extra shifts so the Department of Defense can fuel their fighters with $150 per gallon green kerosene in the left’s brutal, albeit mythical war on climate change. If you are not banging your head on the table about now, you are missing the point and should re-read this paragraph before continuing to my point.

America’s struggle to restore the free-market is fought entirely in the GOP primary election cycle and here is why. Even though the Republican platform advocates freedom and limited government, members of the GOP cocktail caucus clamor to be the first to vote with the Democrats because they love the accolades from the left. Unfortunately for voters, during the primary election cycle every GOP candidate campaigns as a conservative regardless their voting record. Republican voters must make the extra effort to learn which

candidates are fibbing about their conservative core beliefs. Conservatives find the truth enlightening; GOP cocktail caucus members not so much.

This peculiarity does not exist on the left side of the aisle as Democrats are cookie-cutter replicas with virtually identical voting records; check their TAB ratings.

Democrat primary candidates shading themselves as flaming liberals supporting gun control, Obamacare, carbon taxes, free-range bison, stabilization through regulation and $150 per gallon green jet fule and would be a ridiculous redundancy.

ReTiRemenT ConfidenCe on The Rise, suRvey finds

Retirement confidence seems vv to have improved from record lows over the past five years, according to the 24th Annual Retirement Confidence Survey (RCS) cosponsored by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and Greenwald & Associates. In early 2014, 18% of American workers said they were “very confident” they will have enough money to retire comfortably, compared to just 13% last year; 37% are “somewhat confident.” A closer look at the trends indicates that the rise came largely from higher income households ($75,000 and up) and those who had money in retirement plans, including work-sponsored plans and individual retirement accounts (IRAs).

“Retirement confidence is strongly related to retirement plan participation,” said Jack VanDerhei, research director at EBRI. “In fact, workers reporting they or their spouse have money in a defined contribution plan or IRA or have a defined benefit plan from a current or previous employer are more than twice as likely as those without any of these plans to be very confident (24% with a plan versus 9% without a plan).” Nearly half (46%) of those without a plan were “not at all confident” about their retirement, compared to just 11% of those who do have money in a retirement account.

That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is that American workers, particularly those without a retirement account, still have far to go.

The link between retirement accounts and retirement confidence Perhaps not surprisingly, 9 of out 10 workers participating in a retirement investment plan had set aside money for retirement, compared with just 2 out of 10 of those who don’t have a plan. When asked about how much they had in savings and investments (excluding the value of a primary residence), nearly half of respondents with a retirement plan (47%) said they had at least $50,000 set aside; 17% had at least $250,000. By comparison, 73% of workers without a retirement plan had less than $1,000.

In addition, although less than half of all workers had ever tried to calculate how much they will need to retire, those who had money in some sort of a retirement account were twice as likely to have crunched the numbers as those who do not have a plan. And as the RCS demonstrates year after year, calculating a retirement savings goal can lead to retirement confidence.

To save or not to save Workers seemed to understand the importance of saving for retirement, as 68% said they should be saving at least 10% of their income annually. Also not surprisingly, given their low level of reported savings, those who do not have a retirement account were more likely to say they needed to set aside at least 50% of their household income for retirement than those with a retirement account. They were also more likely to say they did not know how much they need to save.

So if workers generally understand the need to save and invest, why aren’t they doing so? The reasons they gave include the cost of everyday living (53%), unemployment or underemployment (14%), non-mortgage debt (6%), mortgage or housing expenses (5%), and education expenses (5%).

Other findings The Retirement Confidence Survey revealed several other interesting points: • Last year, the Department of Labor issued a proposal requiring employersponsored retirement plan statements to illustrate how a worker’s current account balance would translate into a lifetime income stream. A large majority (85%) of plan participants in this year’s survey said the illustration

was at least somewhat helpful, though most said the projected income stream was about what they expected. Of those who said it was less than expected, 35% said they would increase their plan contributions.

The vast majority of plan participants (88%) said that it would be at least somewhat valuable if the financial services company that handles their retirement plan offered recommendations about how much to withdraw from their plan in order to make their account values last.

While the expected retirement age of today’s workers has inched upward over the past two decades, the actual age of retirement for most retirees has changed very little. For example, in 1991, 11% of workers said they expected to retire after age 65, but in 2014, that proportion rose to 33%.

In actuality, in 1991, just 8% of retirees said they retired after age 65, and in 2014, that percentage had risen to just 16%.

In the current year, less than 1 in 10 workers said they plan to retire before age 60, but the reality shows otherwise: 35% of current retirees said they retired before age 60, and not always for positive reasons.

Nearly half of retirees left the workforce earlier than planned, with 61% of them saying they did so due to health reasons or disability. Eighteen percent did so because of a layoff or closure of their business, while the same percentage retired early to care for a family member. On a positive note, 26% said they were able to afford to retire earlier than planned, while 19% said they simply wanted to do something else.

About the survey The RCS was cosponsored by EBRI, a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy research organization that focuses on health, savings, retirement, and economic security issues, and Greenwald & Associates, a Washington, DC-based market research firm. The survey was conducted in January 2014 through 20-minute telephone interviews with 1,501 people, including 1,000 workers and 501 retirees. Speculation hasn’t been limited to the currency itself. Much as the Internet did in its early days, Bitcoin also has spawned an entire ecosystem of startup companies and venture capitalists who want to be part of building out the technology and networks involved in creating and transferring it. In addition to multiple exchanges, companies have begun providing data on the virtual currency’s price and status and creating Bitcoin-based products, including the first ATM in the United States. And as with early Internet companies, such ventures are likely to involve a high degree of uncertainty and risk.

Obviously, virtual currency still faces a lot of challenges. If you’re considering exploring it, either for transactions or as a speculative investment, you should become far more familiar with it than simply relying on this discussion. I know you recommend that no more than 25 percent of your take-home pay should go toward rent or a mortgage payment. Should taxes and insurance be figured into this amount? ~Kayla

Dear Kayla,

Yes, they should. Mortgage companies will qualify you for twice as much house as you can realistically afford. They’ll try to put you on a 30-year, adjustable-rate mortgage and leave you in debt up to your eyeballs for half of your life. Payments like that can easily equal 36 percent or more of your take-home pay. That’s just nuts!

I see so many people who can’t take a decent vacation or save anything for retirement or their kids’ college fund because their mortgage payment is through the roof. That’s called being “house poor.” And I’ve even seen it push people into debt just to buy groceries.

It’s fine if you want to follow my guidelines. But what I’m really trying to do is get you to think. Engage in some critical thinking when it comes to your finances. There’s so much more to life than that building we call a house. I want you to think about your future and your family’s future and make smart money decisions that will change your family tree for years to come! ~Dave DEAR DAVE,

Can you have more than one life insurance policy, and is there ever a reason to do this?

~Chad Dear Chad,

Sure, you can. And there are several different reasons you might choose to do this.

One, like in my case, I have lots of insurance regarding our business, our estate plan and those kinds of things. In some cases, I’ve reached the limit on the amount of a policy a company will write on me. Most life insurance companies will only write so much in coverage for one person.

So when this has happened, I’d go to another carrier for additional coverage.

Another reason people do this is to feel more secure from a company standpoint. If one insurance company goes out of business, they’ll still have another policy, or policies, in place.

Usually, that’s not much of an issue. Most insurance companies are financially stable or have insurance to back them up with the state.

The only real problem with having more than one life insurance policy is that it complicates your life a little bit. You’d have two or three premium checks or withdrawals to worry about each month and possibly even additional policy fees. So generally speaking, it’s cheaper to have just one policy. And I’d recommend having 10 to 12 times your annual income wrapped up in a good, level term policy.

But no, there aren’t any rules against having more than one life insurance policy.

We had rain a few mornings ago. It was cold and wet . . . conditions that seem to bring out various types of sickness in calves.

So, the boys and I drove through one of the groups of cows and calves — giving them all a once-over to see if any of them looked ill or were just not acting right.

The majority of our calves are solid black in color . . . Black Angus and Simmental are their genetics if you want to get technical! Seems like we look at a sea of black calves all of the time . . . they are the norm, the standard, the common place . . . but they are not the ones that the boys are interested in.

My helpers are always drawn to the ones that are unique, unlike the rest . . . different! Being different as a calf, for the most part, is all about the face color.

As we traveled around, the kids were the ones “calling the shots.” That is, they were the ones ordering the photos . . . “take a picture of that one over there Mom.” So as merely the photographer taking the pictures, I struggled with the question . . . what makes this cute little calf more likable than this cute little calf??

Well, according to my two young experts on the subject . . . it is because the first calf is different!!! Shhh . . . don’t tell our solid faced subject . . . we don’t want to make him feel bad!

There’s another one Mom. . . that one has a pirate patch! Of course leave it to two sword wielding kids to recognize that eye accessory!

Now, here’s one that obviously succumbed to the peer pressure to be unique . . . do you think he pulled it off? Do you think his muddy face will pass as being different?? Let’s give him an “A” for effort!

As we were wrapping up our wellness tour, we hit the mother lode . . . uniqueness at its finest.

Two young souls obviously drawn together on a cold and rainy day because of their features . . . maybe . . . at least that is what my young spotters believed.

The boys pronounced everyone healthy . . . at least all of our photo subjects! Good thing their Mom was doing a little checking on her own. Not that I shouldn’t trust the judgment of a 4 and 6 year old . . . but they do see things in their own way . . . branching out from the standard . . . going against the grain . . .not worried about being different!

If you like it hot return some of the jalapeno seeds to the mix or add another pepper.
