Wheat prices were largely unchanged as the market appears to be stabilizing. Rains have been abundant in the southern plains, so much so that disease is rapidly spreading and creating concerns about yield losses, particularly in Oklahoma and Kansas. Freezing temperatures last weekend also appear to have done some damage in eastern Colorado, western Nebraska and northwest Kansas; however, it will take some time to assess the actual losses. USDA issued their first official new crop grain estimates, raising US and world wheat stocks above this year’s level. Corn prices were weaker as planting progress surged ahead of normal, and rains finally came to dry pockets of the northern plains and Midwest. So far, it looks like the corn crop will get off to a good start.

USDA’s report increased export prospects for both old and new crop, helping to support the market.

Soybeans were under pressure from a huge jump in ending stocks for the next marketing year.

Meal also felt pressure from the spreading Avian flu that has reached record proportions. The massive culling of birds is reducing demand for meal as a feed additive. Bean oil, on the other hand, has been steadily moving higher as the El Nino weather pattern takes its toll on palm oil production in Southeast Asia.

Tricia’s Trader celebrates all that is Montana Ag by acknowledging the agencies, organizations and people who serve as the voice for their industry--not always unified, but absolutely passionate and devoted to their respective purposes. Since it’s impossible for the Ag Industry not to intertwine with utilization of this state’s natural resources, you’ll see features that discuss those industries as well. Where the Garden Grows

The Montana Federation of Garden Clubs (MFGC) is a multi-faceted organization committed to the preservation and advancement of horticultural knowledge. Founded in 1937 by Evelyn Mooney, MFGC is affiliated with the National Garden Clubs, (NGC) enabling the organization’s members to have an impact locally, statewide, and across the country through various outreach projects.

“We are a nationally affiliated organization that offers four schools: Flower Show School, Environmental Study School, Landscaping Consultants School, and Garden Study School,” says Denise Fink, President, MFGC. “We offer over $10,000 in scholarships statewide and $4,000 annually, if won from National,” she goes on to say, listing only a small fraction of the contributions MFGC members make.

MFGC scholarships include the Montana Life Members Scholarship. Students who want to be considered for this scholarship must be a U.S. citizen and Montana resident. It is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to students majoring in Conservation, Horticulture, Parks or Forestry, Floriculture, Greenhouse Management, Land Management and related subjects.

Individual scholarships are also available through several MFGC clubs, including Gallatin Empire Club, Great Falls Flower Growers, Rainbow Garden Club, Miles City Garden Club, etc. All contact information and requirements are found on the MFGC website at www.mtfgc.org. Information for NGC scholarships such as the National Garden Clubs Scholarship, offered to college students majoring in subjects such as Botany, Agronomy, Wildlife Science, and other related subjects can be found on the national website, www.gardenclub.org.

Interested in becoming an accredited judge for a standard flower show? Flower Show School is where you start. “Judges trained through the Flower Show School are able to judge in Montana and nationally,” says Susan Billmayer, State Chairman, Flower Show School.

“On day 1 is an hour of flower show procedure. You learn about the awards process, so many awards, so many entries before top awards given, things like that. The second day is on horticulture: a study of echinacea and conifers. Day 3 is learning how to use the score card. Specimens are judged by things like color, straight stem, wilt, bugs, missing petals, and other things.”

Flower Show School is a series of 4 courses. Course 1 starts this year in Bozeman, on August 21-23, with instructors coming from Wisconsin and Washington. “Anyone can attend. You don’t have to be a member if you are just interested in learning about floral arranging or horticulture. If you want to be a judge, you have to be an MFGC member.” For more information on the Flower Show School, contact Phyllis White, local Chairman, at 406-586-0400.

Membership in the MFGC opens up a world of possibilities. Learning about gardening, flower arranging, trees, flowers, and houseplants is just a small example of activities available to members; the list is as unlimited as the imagination.

Affiliation with the NGC allows MFGC to participate in the Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl Poster Contest, an annual contest offered in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service. Information packages are mailed to Contest Chairpersons, and Forest Service Conservation Education Coordinators in May. The packet is also available at the NGC annual meeting. The National Grand Prize Winner is chosen from a pool of local, state, and regional winning posters at the end of April, the following year, culminating with the National Grand Prize Winner Recognition Ceremony held in Washington, D.C. in the summer.

Civic minded individuals will find all manner of local projects benefitting their communities. Various clubs sponsor Youth/Garden Clubs through schools and youth organizations such as 4-H, and Girl Scouts. Children have the advantage of learning about the many aspects of horticulture from Master Gardeners through hands-on projects like forcing bulbs and planting terrariums.

Members have access to dvds, speakers, workshops, classes, and Montana Gardens, a seasonal publication full of Garden Club news from around the state, and are involved in organizing garden tours, plant sales, and flower shows.

Many members are involved in the Blue Star Memorial Marker Program, which installs markers in different garden spots to honor service men and women.

Participation in the Penny Pines Reforestation Program is another program MFGC members have access to by way of an NGC/U.S. Forest Service partnership. Funds donated by members are used to replace trees in areas affected by catastrophe, either natural or man-made. Despite the name, native trees, not necessarily pine trees are planted to replace those lost. Members are encouraged to “bring their pennies” to meetings and total contributions are sent to the NGC once a year. It costs $68.00 to plant a half acre of National Forest System land.

MFGC members are gearing up for National Garden Week, June 5-11. Activities will encourage membership, promote community pride, focus on horticulture information, and raise public awareness of MFGC projects.

Each club president, state and national, accepts the task of completing a special project during their 2 years of service.

“My greatest achievement as President was completing the 75 year History of the Montana Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc.,” says Denise Fink about her 2 years as President, which ends in June, 2015. “In my administration, we have been “Honoring the Past and Embracing the Future. Last year I recognized all the remaining Charter Members.

This year we will honor members who have moved us into the brave new world of electronics.”

MFGC members have created a unique way of communicating the enjoyment they derive from horticulture.

Children are special. There’s nothing like them. They can be our sweetest blessing, as well as our biggest frustration.

Most of all, however, they are our greatest responsibility, as well as our most important--and expensive--commitment.

Whether you are a first-time parent or a veteran of refereeing sibling squabbles and who-put-the-empty-milk-carton-back-inthe-fridge inquisitions, parenthood can be both wonderfully rewarding and frighteningly challenging. Our children give us gifts only a parent can understand--from sticky-finger hugs to heartfelt pleas to tag along on Saturday morning errands. We raise them with a clear goal that we secretly dread will actually take place--that someday they will be grown, independent, ready to move out into the world on their own, and our work will be over. As our children travel this long and never-dull road from infancy to adulthood, we nurture them, worry about them, scold them, love them.

Most of all, we try to protect them. We want them to grow up in a stable world, one in which they are physically safe, emotionally nurtured, and financially secure. Still, meeting expenses can be a challenge.

How expensive is raising a child?

The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that the average nationwide cost of raising one child in a twoparent family from cradle to college entrance at age 18 ranges from $176,550 to $407,820 depending on income. (Source: Expenditures on Children by Families, 2013, released August 2014) Then, when they turn 18, add in college expenses, and your financial outlay can get even worse. How much worse?

According to the College Board, for the 2014/2015 school year, the average cost of one year at a four-year public college is $23,410 (for in-state students), while the average cost for one year at a four-year private college is $46,272 (the total cost of attendance includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and other miscellaneous costs).

Even if those numbers don’t go up, that would come to $93,640 for a four-year degree at a public college, and $185,088 at a private university (and college costs have increased each year for decades). Oh, and don’t forget graduate school.

The bottom line: Children are expensive! Between raising them and educating them and making sure they get a good, strong start in life, one thing is obvious when it comes to children--they are a major responsibility. Fortunately, as long as we remain alive and healthy, we manage to somehow meet these expenses. It’s part of what parenthood is all about.

Have you taken steps to protect them?

But here’s a question you need to consider: What would happen to them if something happened to you? No, it’s not the kind of question we like to dwell on. But these matters are important. This is why many financial professionals recommend that, above and beyond the day-to-day efforts to provide for their children, parents should take specific steps to help protect their financial well-being.

Review your life insurance coverage Life insurance is an effective way to protect your family from the uncertainty of premature death. Life insurance can help assure that a preselected amount of money will be on hand to replace your income and help your family members-your children and your spouse--maintain their standard of living. With life insurance, you can select an amount that will help your family meet living expenses, pay the mortgage, and even provide a college fund for your children. Best of all, life

insurance proceeds are generally not taxable as income. Keep in mind, though, that the cost and availability of life insurance depend on factors such as age, health, and the type and amount of insurance purchased. As with most financial decisions, there are expenses associated with the purchase of life insurance.

Consider purchasing disability income insurance If you become disabled and unable to work, disability income insurance can pay benefits--a specific percentage of your income--so you can continue meeting your financial obligations until you are back on your feet. What about Social Security? If you do become permanently and totally disabled and are unable to do work of any kind, you may be eligible for benefits, but qualifying isn’t easy. For more flexible and comprehensive protection, consider buying disability income insurance.

Start building a college fund now College costs may seem daunting (and they are expected to continue increasing), but you have about 18 years before your newborn will be a college freshman. By starting today, you can help your children become debt-free college grads.

The secret is to save a little each month, take advantage of compound interest, and have a sum waiting for you when your child is ready for college.
