Crude oil continued to drift lower even though the products managed to move higher. The International Energy Agency projected that the oil glut will last through 2016, citing statistics that showed a production surplus of 3 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2015, the largest average daily surplus in 17 years. The yuan’s lower value does make it more expensive to import raw materials and would thus increase the cost of domestically produced products, but it also helps them be more competitive in the export market. August 19, 2015.................................................................... Volume XIII Issue 16.............................................................................. Tricia’s Trader 9 In the land of the free, home of the brave, lies the Treasure State in all its grandeur, and unless you’re a newcomer here you’ve heard and felt the heartbeat of Montana’s economy, appearing in the form of Agriculture. Tricia’s Trader celebrates all that is Montana Ag by acknowledging the agencies, organizations and people who serve as the voice for their industry--not always unified, but absolutely passionate and devoted to their respective purposes. Since it’s impossible for the Ag Industry not to intertwine with utilization of this state’s natural resources, you’ll see features that discuss those industries as well. If you’ve ever wondered what all these groups do, what they stand for, who they support and why, you will never be handed a better opportunity to learn than in Tricia’s Trader over the course of 2015 and 2016, where we examine each faction in detail.

AG SERIES:

The Montana Farm Bureau Federation: For Young and Old by Ali Everts Kids today grow up with aspirations galore that are more easily attainable than ever before in U.S. history. Montana children can become doctors, lawyers, engineers. They can reach for the stars and likely touch one. On the flip side of the coin, where great grandparents, grandparents and parents may have grown up on a farm or ranch in rural Montana, many of today’s youth haven’t experienced that immersion in agriculture. As more and more of the population migrate to urban areas across the world in search of better jobs, what will happen to the ag operations that are the backbone of food and revenue for the state and country? How do we get young people to see farming as an important job and even a potential “dream” job? Organizations like the Montana Farm Bureau are providing the answer. John Youngberg, executive vice president of the Montana Farm Bureau Federation, says the key to attracting youth to agriculture is to provide outlet activities that will to attract young Montanans toward careers in agriculture. For example, MFBF has a Young Farmer and Rancher Program. This program, targeted to those age 18-35, develops leadership skills and involvement in MFBF and the community for the younger generation of potential ag producers. One such event is the annual “Hoofin’ It for Hunger” Trail Run in collaboration with the USDA/ARS Fort Jim Willis, Russel Steinbeisser, Gil Gasper and Wes Keogh Research Station. To be held in Miles City on Oct. 11, the courses for the race will incorporate a 5K, 10K and Jensen at the Commodity Conference in Texas. half marathon on the Fort Keogh property just outside of Miles City. This scenic race will meander through farm fields, pasture land, and along the Yellowstone River. All proceeds will go to the Montana Food Bank network. Registration for the race is online at www.mfbf.org. Interested participants can also request a printed registration form by calling 406-587-3153. MFBF’s collegiate level also effectively executes the mission of the organization. There is a club at Montana State University in Bozeman and a club at University of Montana Western in Dillon. These clubs provide education on the importance of agriculture in the community, how an agricultural organization works, legislation of local, state, and national government, and about the policies of the Montana Farm Bureau Federation. In general, MFBF strives to include and unite all people of the farming community, dating back to the Montana Farming Bureau’s infancy. In 1911 a group of farmers got together and realized that a unified voice speaking to the local government was much more effective than many individual voices. Their first official meeting and birth of the organization was in 1919. When these like-minded farmers got together, the end result was growth of the organization to every state in the union. In Montana, the first Farm Bureau actually began in Glendive in 1915 but folded two years later. Lewis and Clark County took it over in 1917 and has been firmly growing ever since. There are now over 20,000 members of MFBF in Montana and just under 6 million in the United States. “We are still that original grass roots organization from many years ago,” Youngberg said. “Our staff don’t make policy – our members do – and everything starts at the county level. If you have a problem or a solution with your farm you can voice your opinion within MFBF and it will be heard.” Youngberg said that a model example of this was when a member at one of their Broadwater County meetings expressed a concern about the inconsistency of premium hay. This member said he sold premium hay and his neighbor sold premium hay, but they were extremely different. The issue to categorize crops using a uniform standard made it to the state and then the national level—all of it started with one Montana farmer’s discussion with other farmers. When Youngberg first joined as a member of MFBF he became very involved with legislation. “I really enjoyed that part the most,” he said. “You have to have thick skin and not take things personally, but it is where your passion can have a big impact on the country’s agriculture. The world is run by those who show up.” Youngberg said that the most central policy issues of the Farm Bureau mostly advocate for private property rights and water rights. However, what sets apart the Montana Farm Bureau Federation from other agriculture organizations, Youngberg said, is their size and a full time staff to represent farmers from Montana every week of the year. To learn more about the Montana Farm Bureau Federation visit their website at www.mfbf.org.
