FWP SEEKING MEMBERS FOR REGION 6 CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE
PRESS RELEASE--Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking applicants to fill four volunteer positions on the Region 6 Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC is a general advisory committee that provides input and guidance to FWP on a variety of issues—from wildlife and fisheries management to access, state parks, outdoor recreation and law enforcement. The committee is designed to have a membership that represents a variety of northeast Montana communities and natural resource interests. Applicants must live in FWP Region 6, which includes the counties of Hill, Blaine, Phillips, Valley, Daniels, Sheridan, Roosevelt, and portions of McCone, Richland and Choteau Counties. FWP welcomes applications from hunters, anglers, nongame advocates, trappers, boaters, outfitters and guides, state parks and tourism advocates, campers and other outdoor recreationists, and anyone with an interest in natural resource issues. The panel of volunteers typically has three meetings a year, usually at the Fort Peck Fish Hatchery. Members can serve for up to two consecutive, three-year terms. Meals and travel expenses are provided. The function of the CAC is to: · Provide a forum for ongoing two-way communication with our neighbors and communities; · Help FWP identify emerging issues; · Provide advice and perspective on important resource and management issues; · Assist FWP with crafting local, sustainable solutions on regional and statewide issues. Applicants will be asked to provide an overview of their interests and involvement in natural resource issues and write a few sentences on why they are interested in serving on the CAC. To apply, contact FWP at 406-228-3704, email Marc Kloker at mkloker@mt.gov, or stop by the Region 6 office at 54078 U.S. Highway 2 West in Glasgow. Completed applications must be received by December 1, 2015. FWP personnel will then review applications and select the new members. Successful applicants will be invited to attend their first CAC meeting in January, 2016.

Grain markets were all lower after USDA’s latest supply/demand report increased ending stocks for wheat, corn and soybeans. Wheat exports were lowered another 50 million bushels, taking the estimate down to only 800 million bushels for this marketing year, the lowest since the 1971/72 campaign. This year, world wheat production was another record, the third record year in a row. Carryout will also be a record for the second year in a row. While normally the US is a major exporter, we’ve been hampered this year by a strong dollar and the intense competition from the other major exporters. Corn and soybeans both saw USDA increase average yields nationwide and bump up production estimates. Corn had a decline in exports from last month’s estimates and exports will be lower than last year as well. Soybean exports were increased slightly but end stocks were still raised from last month’s estimate and will be more than double last year. The cattle complex had another meltdown with prices sharply lower than last week – which actually includes a day of higher prices offsetting some of the pressure. Cash markets continue to struggle with huge competition from pork and poultry. It is particularly worrisome as we head into the holiday season when beef demand tends to improve. Weights are still running on the heavy side, but have definitely improved from the 2000# plus weights we were seeing just a few weeks ago. Feeder cattle demand has also softened, particularly in the southern plains where most of the buying for winter wheat grazing is complete. Energy markets tumbled with crude oil prices starting to break below a 3-month trading range. The sharply higher dollar was blamed for declines in many commodity markets – grains, energies, metals and of course foreign currencies. With the US economy gaining traction, traders expect that the FED will finally raise interest rates in December, which would make the US dollar stronger but also make US exports more expensive and commodities traded in dollars worldwide more expensive, e.g. metals, crude oil and crude oil products. Higher interest rates, even a small bump, would likely slow investing in equities and begin to pull more funds into the safer US treasuries.

November 18, 2015............................................................... Volume XIII Issue 22............................................................................ Tricia’s Trader 13 In the land of the free, home of the brave, lies the Treasure State in all its grandeur, and unless you’re a newcomer here you’ve heard and felt the heartbeat of Montana’s economy, appearing in the form of Agriculture. Tricia’s Trader celebrates all that is Montana Ag by acknowledging the agencies, organizations and people who serve as the voice for their industry--not always unified, but absolutely passionate and devoted to their respective purposes. Since it’s impossible for the Ag Industry not to intertwine with utilization of this state’s natural resources, you’ll see features that discuss those industries as well. If you’ve ever wondered what all these groups do, what they stand for, who they support and why, you will never be handed a better opportunity to learn than in Tricia’s Trader over the course of 2015 and 2016, where we examine each faction in detail.

Montana CattleWomen: Tweets from the Tractor?
by Ali Everts “The grass was tall, the sun was bright and the cows and calves were fat and happy,” President of Montana CattleWomen, Lynda Grande Myers, explained of their newest fundraising event, the Ranch Run this year. “With 88 runners from across the state of Montana, it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the sustainability of the ranching lifestyle. Runners traveled through three ranches that have been under the watchful eyes of the same families for over 100 years as well as over public land leased by these same families.” Mixing running and ranching is just one example of how the new president of Montana CattleWomen is bringing a fresh face to agriculture. Grand Myers strongly believes in including young people and people who would not usually be on a ranch or farm into the industry. And she helps create the opportunities, like the Ranch Run, for participation on non-traditional levels. “I became CW president,” Grande Myers said, “because I come from a family that has long believed in participating in volunteer activities that help to protect and promote our lifestyle and to hopefully allow the generations that follow to be able to enjoy the ability to live and prosper in the ranching world as informed and involved citizens.” Promoting an informed and involved world of citizens is not an easy task. Montana CattleWomen board director, Annabel Morgan, said that ranchers are not necessarily on their smartphones participating in the media. Ranching and farming can become a closed community in these instances. “My rancher husband is not tweeting from the tractor,” Morgan said. However, Morgan realizes that a big part of being a successful beef industry is connecting with the consumer. When the consumer has lost that connection and is posting pictures of calves who look like they might not be treated well on Facebook and there is no way for the real people involved to respond to it, then there is a problem. “I think the beef industry has weathered a lot of misinformation storms in the past, but this current one has a whole different nature,” Morgan said. “We have to show people from across the states the truth of our hard work and commitment as ranchers and farmers to the land and its animals. This is a big part of what Montana CattleWomen does now. We bridge that gap by trying to grow our presence on social media and working in the school systems.” This year there were about 48 teachers in the state who participated and used educational material from the Montana CattleWomen. The free material they provide serves a broad range of ages from kindergarten to high school. It is full of lesson plans, agriculture resources, and classes on how to become a better beef consumer.
Beef educator advisor, Suzanne Bohleen, goes into the classroom and talks to kids face to face about the truth of beef. Bohleen taught home economics for a while, so she has built a rapport with the teachers she helps. If a teacher decides to use their material, then the Montana CattleWomen provide the beef and food for the lesson free. The information is also diversified and built upon every year. That way it doesn’t become repetitious. “I trade cattle for a living, so that is my business,” Bohleen said. “And if the kids have a question about my business I can explain to them face-to-face how we raise and treat our cattle. I encourage others to do the same.” Bohleen also helps people who are beyond their school years in learning the best way to use beef to provide for their families. The Montana CattleWomen have been involved in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to offer a beef cooking class with crockpots and at the end of the class the participant can take home a crockpot along with a fully cooked meal. The organization also offers another class that is similar for young mothers and teaching them how to cook a variety of different meals from just beef. “Some of those young women have never cooked before,” Bohleen said. “And when you may not have a working stove or the right materials to cook, providing for your family can be a trick. We show them that even when prices are high at the stores, by using one cut for multiple meals, a family can eat well on a budget.” In general, the Montana CattleWomen all believe strongly in ranching as a lifestyle and participate in supporting and spreading that belief in as many ways as they can. “As an organization we are trying hard to move along with the speed of this century,” Grande Myers said. “And we look forward to doing new things, while promoting our treasured Montana beef.” To learn more about Montana CattleWomen visit their website at montanacattlewomen.org and their Facebook page, “Montana CattleWomen”.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58
Disabled by Choice Trivia was a marginal cow dog of questionable moral fiber, so it was not surprising the Sunday morning she meandered into the barnyard pregnant. We hoped Cody had fathered the litter, so there would be a reasonable chance the pups might have some value. Such was not entirely the case. Cody was indeed the father, but because he was a blue-eyed, colordilute, Australian Shepherd, one of his progeny suffered the deafness and partial blindness called Waardenburg’s Syndrome. Normally, these are disqualifying characteristics for cow dogs, so we found a nice city lady from Dayton who wanted to adopt the white pup in spite of his disability. We were cheering our good fortune when Mom announced, “No! We are keeping this pup because he will need special care and training.” Had it not been my senior years of high school, I would have run away from home right then. My brother, Blaine, tagged the pup
with the name Sonar and soon the little, white bugger was following the other dogs every time we trailed cows. This began the most frustrating decade of my life. Imagine spending an entire morning gathering yearlings and just when the leads take the corral gate, Sonar jumps in front and chases them all back into the brush. As senseless as it was, we would all scream at the deaf dog standing in the gate prompting Mom to shout, “Use hand signals!” I wanted to use hand signals all right, but since Sonar was nearly as blind as he was deaf, for all he knew the wild waving from the galloping cowboys meant, “Good dog.” More often than not, he would plop his backside in the middle of the gate just to savor the wild action in his doggie heaven. Sadly, this became the new normal on the Double Rafter Ranch. Because of his disability, Sonar had no clue he was the problem rather than the solution and this brings
me to my point. Sonar blindly plugging the gate is analogous to the CNBC correspondents moderating the recent Colorado, GOP, presidential debate. Nationwide, nearly all journalists have been so indoctrinated by leftwing propaganda, they are blinded by their bias and our republic suffers greatly due to their tarnished news reporting. None in the mainstream media will ever question the Marxist principles underlying the Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton campaigns, choosing instead to promote the erroneous mantra Democrats are for poor people. No one has suffered more economically over the past eight years than the middle and lower classes, yet media elites in the ruling class turn a blind eye to this tragedy. Sonar was born entirely deaf and 90 percent blind, so he had an excuse. The media are blind and deaf by choice.

After a long pause, the angry member accepted. “OK,” he said, “I withdraw what I said. Half of this Senate is NOT made up of cowards and corrupt politicians!”

DEAR DAVE, I work as the executive director of a nonprofit charitable organization. Lately, I’ve been wondering if I should hire an employee as a development person. I don’t want to damage the work we do, and I can’t help but look at bringing in someone new as a gamble. Do you have any suggestions? How do you handle situations like this? ~Denise Dear Denise, Over the years, I’ve found that you can reduce a lot of the fear when it comes to hiring simply by doing your due diligence – and then some – during the hiring process. I get what you’re saying, though. It’s kind of a gamble anytime you hire someone. But if you do your job during the hiring process, I’ve found that in most cases it turns into an investment rather than a gamble. Even then, some investments are better than others. In your line of work, you need a lot more than a warm body in a chair. You need someone who really cares about your cause and is really gifted when it comes to physically, mentally and spiritually involving people in the community. In a sense, a development person is kind of like a salesperson. A good one is worth their weight in gold, while a bad one will only cost you a ridiculous amount of time and money, while potentially tarnishing your good name. Look for the best of the best, and don’t rely on résumés to tell you the whole story. At my office, we always have numerous interviews, and the process can go on for months. We’re also okay with not hiring someone and putting the position on hold for a while if we can’t find the person who is an exact fit professionally and personally. And remember, Denise. Like with all things, it never hurts to ask God for a little guidance! ~Dave

DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are about to relocate to another part of the country. We’d like to sell our house, but we’re thinking about taking out a small loan to have some work done first. We could get in the $180,000 range selling it “as-is” but closer to $200,000 if we installed new roof, carpeting, exterior paint and concrete work. I know how you feel about debt, but what are your thoughts in this scenario? ~Kim Dear Kim, From what you just described, and assuming the concrete work wouldn’t be too extensive, you looking at going into debt probably $12,000 to $15,000 in order to get $20,000 more out of the deal. I’d just sell it. I wouldn’t go to all that trouble for $5,000. Every piece of debt you take on compromises your financial security and robs you of your largest wealth-building tool—your income. Even if you guys are in good shape, you’ve got a lot of uncertainty and the potential for unexpected expenses in the months ahead. Just sell the house and get on with your lives. It’s not worth the hassle. ~Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business.
