Steve Bullock were on hand Friday, May 19, 2016, to celebrate the groundbreaking of MSU-Northern’s new Diesel Technology Center. The $9.9 million project will provide state-of-the-art training facilities for one of Northern’s most popular academic programs. The ceremony marks the final phase of a two-year capital campaign that has raised 94% of its goal through state funding and contributions by industry partners and individual supporters. “I’m pleased to see this important project move forward,” said Governor Bullock. “This facility will not only benefit the students by preparing them for the good-paying jobs that await them, but also the communities and businesses who will have access to a pipeline of highly-trained workers, increasing their ability to grow, expand, hire more workers and grow Montana’s economy.” “This is a major success story for Northern and for Montana,” said Clayton Christian, Montana’s Commissioner of Higher Education. “Private industry and the state are investing in a nationally recognized Northern program that supplies great talent to employers across America.” “The support of MSU Northern’s industry partners, alumni, and friends in the community is truly awe inspiring,” said Dr. Waded Cruzado, President of Montana State University. “This was a big lift and the supporters of MSU Northern had the strength to do it. Generations of students will benefit from their generosity. We have a debt of gratitude with those who came together to make this project a reality.” “The current facility has served thousands of MSUNorthern students,” said Chancellor Greg Kegel. “We added several additions over the years as our programs expanded, but there was never time to design what we really needed. This new building has 10 years of planning and design in it, and will allow us to expand our curriculum and offer things that we never have before.” The fundraising campaign for the new center kicked off in October of 2014 and has relied heavily on industry support. BNSF, GE, and the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation helped launch the campaign with commitments of $1 million each. To date, the project is $550,000 short of its goal. This April the Washington Foundation, in conjunction with Modern Machinery (a Washington Company), pledged to match any new donations to the campaign. An anonymous donor recently made the first matching donation with a contribution of $50,000. The new Diesel Technology Center is designed in keeping with modern training techniques and will be furnished with the latest equipment and instrumentation. The proposed facility is 7,000 square feet larger than the existing structure, meets all code requirements, can incorporate future technological advances, and will attract and accommodate more students, allowing the University to grow one of its strongest and most vibrant programs. MSU-Northern’s Diesel Technology program is highly regarded throughout the diesel industry. Its diesel graduates will help meet the workplace shortage of qualified technicians nationwide. Business and industry employers welcome growth in the number of students who wish to prepare for well-paying careers in diesel technology, and the future facility will help Northern accommodate current and future needs for specialized classroom and laboratory space.

MALTA--MAY 24, 2016-by Ashley Stuart The community of Malta and Phillips County residents are still pinching themselves after receiving an incredible gift of a $100,000 skate park from Jeff Ament, founder and bass guitarist of world famous rock band Pearl Jam. Ament, a Big Sandy, Montana native and lifelong skateboarder, enjoys giving back to rural Montana youth through building skate parks. In an interview in 2012 with Vans Off the Wall documentary as to why Ament believes in building skate parks he says, “Most small towns have basketball or football teams at their high school and there is that outlet, but there is a whole different group of kids, typically, that are interested in things more artistic. Music and skateboarding are programs that have been cut a lot more in the last 10 years. Every kid is different and you can’t shove every kid into a round hole because a lot of the kids are triangle shaped and square shaped and skateboarding, I think, is for a lot of the triangle shaped and square shaped kids.” Billy Coulon, owner and design artist of Evergreen Skateparks, and his 6 person crew have been working in Malta through the rain and snow since April 18th on the 4,000 sq ft project and are hoping to complete the skate park, located in Hill Crest Park, within the next two weeks. Plans to open the new Malta Skate Park are underway and the Skatepark Committee is busy planning the grand opening celebration scheduled for June 26th. In addition to the generous donation from Ament, Malta and Phillips County communities have come together and raised over $6,000 in one day through a radio-a-thon with KMMR 100.1. The funds will be put towards adding to the Hill Crest skate park area with sod, benches, sidewalks and picnic tables with shade. Many thanks goes out to Jeff Ament, Evergreen Skateparks, the City of Malta, Malta Trails, Lynette Ereaux and the Skatepark Committee (Ashley Stuart, Shyla Jones, Laura Pankratz, Travis Rhodes and Shane Carnahan) for making this exciting new addition to Malta a reality. When 7 year old Kash Ereaux was asked what he thought about having a world class skate park in Malta, he said, “I can’t wait to skate!”

Ramblings of a Conservative
Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58
Why? Years back, I conducted a trivia contest during closing ceremonies of our Double Rafter Cattle Drives. During the week-long drive, I would jot down seemingly insignificant observations pertaining to life in the saddle and the most observant guest would win a Montana Silversmith belt buckle at our final banquet. For instance, during one of our September trips, the high country was blanketed with 14 inches of wet snow, forcing us to shovel snow to pitch the cooking and sleeping tents. By the second afternoon, the temperature rocketed to 70 degrees thereby morphing our winter wonder land camp into a muddy feedlot. Jerry, a ranching neighbor, frequently helped us on these trips and as he stepped into the cook tent for morning coffee I noticed the plastic bread wrappers in each of his overshoes. I grabbed my shirt-pocket note pad and scribbled this little tid-bit for the trivia game.
Just as the four-wheeler has done to horses, the Muck boots are doing to overshoes. Most of the Muck boot generation, as well as nearly all guests that September, have no idea as to the purpose of a bread wrapper in a cowboy’s overshoes and I am going to leave the answer hanging. If you want to know the “why,” find Jerry, or some other cowboy who came of age in the ‘60s and ask them. Instead of talking bread wrappers, let me use the remainder of this column to explain the “why” behind a recent political point which superficially seems bizarre, yet is brilliant if you understand political strategy. King Obama recently decreed all American schools will accommodate any and all of the government endorsed 15 sexes into the same restroom or locker room. School districts who ignore his royal order could lose federal funding and nothing brings the dependency class to their
knees faster than the revocation of monies from Uncle Sam. If you are confused why the King would throw a bone to the transsexuals who make up less than 0.1 percent of the population, you are missing his point and this brings me to my point. For years, progressives have indoctrinated Generations X, Y and the Millennials to HATE Christian conservatives because tolerance of their beliefs is the supreme ideal. Leftists do not want to defeat conservatives in the arena of ideas, they want them eliminated from the American culture. Anyone thinking there is a difference between the sexes will be aggressively attacked as an intolerant bigot, so all who disagree with the King’s new ruling instantly become inherently evil. With a single public announcement, President Obama has locked up his fully-indoctrinated progressive voterbase and now you know why.

THE LITTLE ROCKIES RODEO BIBLE CAMP
by Riley Johnson This is the 9th consecutive year of The Little Rockies Rodeo Bible Camp, to be held June 19th through the 22nd at the Landusky Bible Camp, which is located about 90 miles southeast of Havre in the Little Rocky Mountains. The camp’s purpose is to use rodeo as the avenue to attract kids aged 12 to graduating high school senior and put them in a positive environment. All disciplines in the sport of rodeo are offered, such as saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding, team roping, calf roping, break away roping, barrel racing, pole bending; also held is a horsemanship clinic. The camp is open to all levels from beginner to intermediate to advanced. Some of these kids compete in high school rodeos and even amateur rodeos. In past years some very talented athletes who’ve have been to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and instructors that compete in the PBR and PRCA have attended. The Horsemanship class has three instructors with combined horse experience of over 100 years. The livestock is provided by Sparky Dreesson, who had the remuda of the year for the 2010 National Finals Rodeo. The stock is handpicked to meet beginner to advanced skill levels. Two guest speakers will headline this year. One is a minister from a local church and the other is coming all the way from Missouri. More information can be found by going to Facebook under Little Rockies Rodeo Bible Camp, or the website under the same name where kids and parents can find email contacts, registration forms and more. The cost of the camp is $125 for timed events and $150 for rough stock. It’s really a full four days from morning to night with spiritual time and rodeo. Nature hikes, team building events, swimming, and a lot more are packed into these four days.
