Destinations: Bear Paw Battlefield

Located 15 miles south of Chinook on HWY 240. The Battle of Bear Paw was the final battle of the Nez Perce War of 1877. It is a 1¼-mile self-guided tour of the battlefield. It is open daily during daylight hours.

Blaine County Museum

Before you visit the Bear Paw Battlefield you may want to stop by the Blaine County Museum. It is located at 501 Indiana Street in Chinook. Blaine County Wildlife Museum

McClelland Ferry

The Stafford-McClelland ferry is one of three ferries still running in Montana. It is located on the Missouri River 16 miles north of Winifred. M Trail was recently completed and is a 3-mile round trip trek with the trailhead situated in the cul-de-sac in Riverview Park (located behind the Jr./Sr. High School). The trail will take you over the pedestrian canal bridge, and follow the irrigation canal and back again. Malta Trails is continually adding accenting attractions along both trails.

Northern Montana has some of the most preserved dinosaur fossils discovered in the world. Liberty County Museum

Dependence Day Of all our founding documents, the Declaration of Independence is the most profound because in a single sentence it describes what is so unique about America. By declaring, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” America became the exceptional experiment in freedom. The idea God had given each and every patriot rights which cannot be taken away was truly revolutionary, but the passing years have lulled citizens into thinking life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are as permanent as the sunrise. They are not. Such unalienable rights may never be taken by force, yet sadly, we eagerly trade them away every day. Here is how: For over a century, progressives have

promoted the illusion man’s rights come from government rather than God. For government to deliver a right to healthcare, a living wage, retirement, food, housing and free higher education it must be massive; consuming the bounty of every citizen, plus the bounty of generations not yet conceived. These huge programs magically enslave both the producing class in debt and the non-producing class in dependency. After all, the man who must kneel to give thanks for the crumbs tossed by the ruling class, is no freer than the man who worked all day producing the crumb. To most Americans, that truth is not self-evident and this brings me to my point. It is mutually exclusive to identify as a progressive patriot; you can be one or the other, but not both. Therefore, to relieve the angst of progressives celebrating Independence Day while

simultaneously voting to enslave the unwashed, I propose liberals establish their less hypocritical, national holiday, called Dependence Day. Here are some options which will not conflict with the July 4th birth of American liberty: July 2nd is the day Congress passed the Sixteenth Amendment launching the massive redistribution of wealth through income taxes. March 4th, was inauguration day for President Woodrow Wilson, the great-greatgrandfather of American progressivism. Social Security enslaved every senior on August 14th and President Johnson first mentioned his Great Society programs on May 7th. Last, but not least we have Obamacare passing Congress by a parliamentary sleight of hand on March 21st. Pick your favorite, because each one represents swapping God’s gift of unalienable rights, liberty and limited government for bondage under progressive programs.

While most of us have first aid supplies for physical injuries, it’s also possible, and a good idea, to put together a first aid kit for stress. One part of our stress first aid kit is short term stress antidotes that use our five senses. With sight, for example, you can use your eyes to focus on things that relax and calm you. Maybe it’s simply looking out the window at nature, or looking through some favorite pictures, say from that relaxing vacation last fall.

Other approaches to fighting stress take more effort but produce long-term relief. Things that make your heart feel happy are some of the most effective. That usually means connecting with others and finding acts of kindness that make you feel better.

And yes, your nose can also help. The variety of scents available in candles, air fresheners, lotions and aromatherapy oils can all soothe. Scents like lavender and apple tend to calm, while lemon and peppermint help to energize many people. Taste is another way to find short term relief from stress. There’s a reason why comfort foods have earned that name. And touch? While a soothing massage may be the ultimate stress reducer, simply stroking your pets, taking a relaxing bath or shower, or exchanging hugs with someone close to you are all good ways to use touch for fighting stress.

Tied to that is identifying activities that help you feel good about yourself and your place in the world. It might be volunteering, helping a sick friend, or taking up a craft or some other activity that allows you to be creative. Some people find that developing a more spiritual side to their lives is a great way to reduce stress. That can mean formal religion, but can also mean spending more time in nature or getting involved in community activities where you find you are able to contribute and do good. We live in a time when stress is a common affliction that most of us face. While there may be no way to make all the stress of daily living disappear, being aware of the stress you face and taking simple steps to help you better handle it will certainly make life easier. “Counseling Corner” is provided by the American Counseling Association. CRAPPIE DIE-OFF AT BAILEY RESERVOIR, FWP LOOKING FOR ANSWERS

Mark Kloker Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are trying to determine the cause of a fish kill that occurred at Bailey Reservoir south of Havre. The fish kill was first reported on June 6, and appears to be affecting only adult black crappie. FWP fisheries crews responded immediately and observed 25 dead black crappie along the banks of the reservoir during a complete survey of the shoreline. At this time, it appears to be a species-specific fish kill that is targeting spawning-aged crappie. Recent shoreline surveys suggest that younger-aged crappies, yellow perch and northern pike may be unaffected. However, the total effects of this fish kill will not be known until a full sampling of the reservoir occurs later in June. On June 7, a member of the FWP fish health crew from Great Falls reported to Bailey Reservoir and collected tissue samples from both black crappie and yellow perch. Several weeks are needed to obtain results from the lab. “It is difficult to determine how many, or what percentage, of the black crappie population may have been affected,” said Cody Nagel, Havre-area fisheries biologist. “Black crappie are nearing the peak of their spawn, which is a high stress period for any fish species. Fish can have an increased vulnerability to parasites and other fish health-related issues during these high-stress activities.” FWP will continue to monitor the fish population at the reservoir, and encourage the public to let the Department know of any additional problems. As a precaution, FWP recommends to always thoroughly cook any fish that are harvested. Questions or comments can be directed to biologist Cody Nagel, at 406-265-6177.

FORT PECK, MT--This Tony Award and Oscar nominated musical, follows the epic and timeless adventures of unlikely hero Quixote, as he searches for glory, love and victory. The score features “The Impossible Dream”, which is arguably the most cherished song ever written. Fort Peck Summer Theatre is honored to welcome James Rio, whose credits include international productions of The Phantom of the Opera, to star as Don Quixote.
