Wheat markets were widely mixed over the last two weeks with Minneapolis spring wheat continuing to outperform the winter wheat markets. It managed a higher move while both Chicago and Kansas City were weaker. Quality has been an issue this year for wheat, and the last of spring wheat harvest in the US and Canada has run into extended rain delays, further reducing quality supplies in the primary producing region of the world. FWP SALMON SPAWN ON FORT PECK RESERVOIR HAS BEGUN ~Mark Kloker, MT FWP Fisheries crews began collecting adult Chinook salmon starting last week in hopes of collecting a large number of eggs, which will be raised to juveniles and released back into the reservoir in 2017. Crews are using electrofishing boats and targeting areas near the dam throughout October. Salmon do not naturally reproduce in Fort Peck Reservoir, making these efforts critical to the continuation of this fishery. “Even though salmon have been observed in relatively shallow areas during the past few weeks, ideal spawning activity has yet to take place,” said Heath Headley, Fort Peck Reservoir biologist. “Similar to walleye, salmon spawning activity peaks when all the right conditions take place; primarily water temperatures and timing.” Ideal spawning temperatures are when water temperatures reach 55 degrees, which typically occurs around mid-October. This is also when crews see both the most fish and best egg quality. Early-on egg quality isn’t as good due to warmer water temperatures, as Chinook
salmon are a coldwater fish which require colder water for proper egg development. Water surface temperatures have been averaging 62 degrees over the last couple weeks. Salmon were first introduced into For Peck Reservoir in 1983. Due to the abundance of their preferred forage fish, cisco, salmon have shown excellent growth, with males maturing in two to four years and females in three to four years. Crews are hoping for a good egg-collection year as salmon numbers, and size, caught by anglers have been quite good. “Compared to last year, the salmon caught this year have been larger,” said Headley. “This is due to a large year class that is continuing to grow and mature. Anglers may recall a large number of smaller, mature males last season. Much of this has to do with males maturing at an earlier age then females which is typical in most fish species.” Early indications suggest that there are larger fish with more females present, and most fish are averaging around 15 pounds. Once the fish are collected, they are transferred to the Fort Peck Multispecies Fish (continued on p. 13)

Kangaroos A kangaroo kept getting out of his enclosure at the zoo. Knowing that he could hop high, the zoo officials put up a tenfoot fence. He was out the next morning, just sauntering around the zoo. A twenty-foot fence was put up. Again he got out. When the fence was forty feet high, a camel in the next enclosure asked the kangaroo, "How high do you think they'll go?" The kangaroo said, "About a thousand feet, unless somebody locks the gate at night!"

According to the Malta Chamber of Commerce, the Scrip program provides up to a $1,000 interest free loan, through any of Malta's local banks, to be spent during the holiday season. The funds are only able to be spent at participating Chamber businesses, and during the open Scrip window, which normally runs from around Halloween through Christmas Eve. The funds are paid back in 10 equal monthly increments throughout the rest of the year. This year's Christmas Scrip Kick-Off occurs with the annual Parade of Lights on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 5pm – 8pm that evening downtown Malta. The Chamber would like to see a good variety of floats in this year's parade, and encourages everyone to come out and enjoy this launch to the holiday season. The Chamber office can be reached by calling (406)654-1776 or visiting www.maltachamber.com.

SALMON SPAWN (cont. from p. 9) Hatchery. Egg and milt are then extracted from females and males, respectively, and successfully fertilized offspring will be reared over the winter. Please be aware of fisheries crews and their electrofishing efforts, as they may be near areas where angling activities are taking place. The salmon tend to congregate in areas where they were initially released. Snagging for salmon began on Saturday, Oct. 1. Ramblings of a Conservative
Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58
October Surprises Do you have a creepy Uncle Tim? A fellow who acts drunk at family gatherings. Obnoxious is too kind of word to describe his belligerent habit of constantly interrupting and you patiently listen to his diatribes because it is just good manners. If you haven’t seen your Uncle Tim in a while, it might be because October 4th, he was at Longwood University berating Republican VP nominee, Indiana Governor, Mike Pence. America would be forever indebted if your family would send him money for a bus ticket home. This was scheduled to be a debate, but with Uncle Tim interrupting Governor Pence 70 times in 90 minutes, it resembled All-Star Wrestling. CBS News Anchor, Elaine Quijano, the moderator, had a ringside seat allowing her to cheer Uncle Tim hysterically while marinating in the spray of his sweat and spittle.

Somehow, the left champions this fiasco as good political theatre. Governor Pence candidly revealed his Christian, conservative beliefs by politely answering Elaine’s scripted questions. His self-control was inspiring to us Irish who have a limited supply of this particular character trait. You can judge someone by observing their closest friends, evaluating the character of their children, or watching them work their horse or dog. I was a latecomer to the Donald Trump camp, mostly because I kept stumbling over his two ex-wives. However, in mid-May, Donald Trump published his list of potential Supreme Court nominees and this impressed me. During the GOP Convention, the performance of his progeny prompted me to think there may be more to Mr. Trump. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and during the VP debate,
The Ole Mercantile: Now open. We have Groceries, Hardware, Vet Supplies, Feed, Coffee and Ice Cream. Located in Grass Range, Mt on Hwy 87 S. 10-II
Governor Pence sealed the deal. Character is infectious and Donald Trump will be a better president due to the core values of his vice-presidential pick. Then came Trump’s 2005 vulgar video clip. In years past, have you ever said something foul while working cattle or sitting around hunting camp? I have and have asked God to Bleach-Bit those memories from my hard drive. Mr. Trump accepted responsibility and apologized for his locker room remarks and as disappointed as I am, I forgive him. Had the Trump camp hired a proven expert in suppressing evidence such as Hillary Clinton, the 2005 video would never have seen the light of day. Think about that before you start throwing stones.

BLAINE COUNTY WELCOMES NEW PROFESSIONAL TO AREA
~Tricia A. Kimmel
Dr. Jessica Robb, DVM and her young family have descended on the small town of Chinook and thus far, the town and its surrounding region of valleys and gently rolling mountains have fulfilled every notion the newcomers imagined about the place. Hailing from farm country in southwest Nebraska, Dr. Robb graduated last May with a doctorate degree from Iowa State University's veterinary school, and moved to Cleveland, Montana at the foothills of the Bear Paw Mountains to accept a position with Blaine County Veterinary Service. Her husband Dr. Jessica Robb (center) with her husband Will and Will found work with a local rancher son Braxton. (Photo Credit: Jessica Robb) at Cleveland, and together they are looking forward to raising their infant son Braxton in a community with small town values and an agricultural base. They enjoy being able to ride their horses and keep their three dogs where they live. Robb indicates she plans to stay a long time, iterating, "Montana's grown on me." They hope to be able to buy property in the area eventually, and make a lifelong home here. At Blaine County Vet, Dr. Robb's focus is mainly on small animal care, but also is able and willing to treat large animal cases that arise, easing some of the time burden felt by Drs. Aiton and Baxter who handle most of the large animal work. Small animal medicine is a passion for Robb, who's been immersed in the industry since she was as young as 5 years old. As a youngster, she spent hours and hours at a nearby clinic, and the veterinarian there was kind and patient enough to mentor her from a tender age. She urges young people who are considering a career in veterinary medicine to spend as much time in a clinic as possible before launching their education. She says, "I love it, but that doesn't mean it's always fun...it's a LOT of work. And, although you treat animals, you must learn to deal with people also. It's not just animals you are working with." Blaine County Vet and the clients they work with should be well served by Dr. Robb for many years to come. Likewise, may Montana treat them well and bring them many happy experiences here.
