Grain markets were generally quiet as they waited for two important days this week, the presidential election and the supply/demand report. Corn and soybean harvest is wrapping up across much of the Midwest, with storage space filled to the brim. There have been corn and soybeans piled on the ground, which will likely keep pressure on cash markets until they are gone. US wheat prices offered at the ports are roughly equal to world prices but transportation costs keep us from competing in the important North African markets. Cattle markets were slightly lower as cash prices slipped following a two-week rally. Domestic demand appears to be improving as we head into the holidays, but beef supplies are still large enough to absorb the extra demand at this point. Financial markets were mixed in volatile trade as they moved back and forth with pre-election polling numbers. Energies continued their retreat, a full $8 off their highs from just three weeks ago. Precious metals were especially tuned to election polling volatility, seeing sharp moves up and down over the last week. The Dow had a strong rally, reaching back to the swing highs from the last two months and near the all-time highs.

american hero
of the WEEK
In honor of Veterans' Day, we began our series recognizing our military heroes in the pages of Tricia's Trader. Enjoy reading about our most honored vets as we tell their stories of heroism. To nominate someone you think is an American Hero, simply contact any staff member listed on page 8 inside. MATTHEW F. JONES, SR.: This issue we honor Matt Jones, Senior as an American Hero. Matt's service is summarized in his own words here: "I was drafted when I was 18 years old and just out of high school in the fall of 1969. I went to Vietnam in 1970. I was stationed in I Corps, the Northern part of South Vietnam along the Demilitarized Zone between South & North Vietnam. I was an Infantry M60 Machine Gunner. We did a lot of walking in mountains, covered with jungle. There were crazy times & bad times. One time by the ocean we were bushwacked, so the next morning, I and some friends were going to go swim in the South China Sea. The next morning the ocean tide was about a quarter mile out, so we didn't get to swim. It is an honor to be remembered, but I will always remember my
friends & fellow Veterans, who never made it back. All the Veterans, all wars, I honor because a lot of them gave everything they had. May they Rest In Peace. ~From this friend, Matthew F. Jones Sr." So many years later, Jones now lives at Hays, Montana, is married and has seven grown children who reside in the U.S. and Canada. Mr. Jones, we thank you and commend you for your service, Sir!

Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.
DEAR DAVE, I’ve been out of college for a few years, and I have no debt. I’d like to start investing, so I’m thinking about buying a triplex, living in one of the apartments, and renting the other two. Should I get an interest-only loan for this? ~Chad Dear Chad, Never, ever get an interest-only loan! If you can’t make this idea happen on a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage that takes no more than 25 percent of your take-home pay, then you can’t afford this project. Think about this too. If you buy a complex and live on the property, you’ll have to set down and enforce some strict renter’s guidelines. Living with renters can be tricky, because they’ll have access to you 24 hours a day, and some of them will abuse the privilege. Then again, you’ll have that kind of access to them as well. Not exactly a bad thing when you have people living in a complex you own. Here’s an option. What if you just bought a nice, inexpensive single family home for yourself? You wouldn’t have the cash flow, but you will have the appreciation and a better chance of reselling down the road. Plus, if you want to invest further, there are always mutual funds. Real estate plans work out just like you want them to only about half the time. Don’t discount the risk and expense either! ~Dave DEAR DAVE, I have to make a four-day business trip to Hawaii soon, and my wife would like to go along. It’s okay with my boss, as long as we pay her way, and I would love to have her along. It will cost about $1,500 for her to join me, and I make a little over $100,000 a year. We’re also debt-free, except for our home, and we’re working hard to pay that off as soon as possible. What do you think? ~Michael Dear Michael, If I were in your situation, and I told my wife I didn’t think it was a good idea or we couldn’t afford it, there’s a good chance I’d be sleeping on the couch for a month. Take your lady with you! You guys have a six-figure income, and you’ve got no debt but your home. So, a four-day trip to Hawaii for $1,500? Yeah, I’m definitely doing that. It sounds to me like you two have done a great job with your money. That being the case, you deserve a little fun — like a trip for two to Hawaii for $1,500. Even if you have to work, you’ll still have lots of time together, and she’ll be able to relax on the beach, swim and sightsee while you’re taking care of business. Have a great time, you two! ~Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business, and CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 12 million listeners each week on 575 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. Follow Dave on the web at daveramsey.com and on Twitter at @DaveRamsey.

HUNTING SEASON: STEWARD) · Know where you are located- Whether you are hunting public land, private land, or land enrolled in an access program such as block management, it is every hunter’s responsibility to know where they are to avoid trespassing. Maps are always available, as are GPS chips and cell phone apps to aid in orientation. · Driving off road- While hunting on private property, a person may not drive off established roads or trails without landowner permission. Off-road travel on public land, including game retrieval, is prohibited unless designated as open. Consult appropriate land agency or land map for specifics. · Accessing public lands- Access to public lands (on a private road) through private land requires permission of the private landowner, lessee, or their agent. · Camping- camping is allowed on most public lands (see agency regulations), but permission is needed to camp on private property and BMAs. · Know the rules- Consult BMA maps for specific rules on block management property, including: driving on roads, parking areas, no shooting zones, walk-in only areas, camping, number of hunters allowed, game retrieval, etc. · Report violations- report any hunting and fishing, trespassing, vandalism, or other criminal activity you see to 1-800-TIP-MONT (1-800-847-6668). The 1-800-TIP-MONT program is a toll-free number where one can report violations of fish, wildlife or park regulations. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000 for providing information that leads to a conviction. Also remember that this time of year is a very busy time for landowners. Cattle and other livestock are being moved from their fall pastures, and are often times brought near the home site for winter feeding and care. Please use common sense and respect when around these activities. FWP also offers a free online program called The Montana Hunter-Landowner Stewardship Project. This project is an information program for anyone interested in promoting responsible hunter behavior and good hunter-landowner relations in Montana. The program is delivered through an interactive website utilizing questions, videos, and feedback as well as opportunities for you to test your knowledge on a variety of practical topics related to hunter-landowner relations and responsible hunter behavior. Please go to http://fwp.mt.gov/education/hunter/ hunterLandowner/ to learn more and complete the program.

Ramblings of a Conservative
Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58
Abandoned I spent opening weekend elk hunting in the Missouri Breaks and the mid-October downpours had rendered the boggy coulees and canyons impassible to horses. Tracks along the high ridges suggested many elk had moved to the safety of the dense willows surrounding the river several days prior to our arrival. While probing the Missouri river bottoms for a straggling elk, I came across an abandoned log house with six, log outbuildings. The action was slow, so my hunting buddy, Mark, and I explored these log ruins. As we both have built blisters with a draw knife and ax, we admired the log joinery indicating the sweat equity someone invested in this little homestead. The largest structure contained three rooms, obviously constructed as three separate projects and I surmised this rancher was simultaneously building his herd, his house and his family. Could they talk, the rotting

log walls likely held stories revealing the good and bad days of ranching on the greasewood flats of the Missouri. Those folks are long gone, so I can only speculate how this family story ended. Whether polio, or influenza took them in the early 1900s, or bankruptcy hamstrung them during the depression matters not. Sadly, the day came when someone decided to walk away and abandon their family dreams. Here is why this is timely. We are one week from the most pivotal election in American history and sadly, a victory by the Clinton machine destroys America. Should the Donald come out on top, our republic might survive because a more circuitous route to America’s collapse gives us patriots more time to alter our nation’s course. However, because progressivism has saturated America, John Q. Public has become obsessed with

freebies while remaining clueless about freedom and what it takes to run a constitutional republic founded on limited government. Much must change, and this brings me to my point. Regardless the election results and unlike the homesteaders who abandoned their dreams on the greasewood flats of the Missouri, I refuse to just walk away and let all I have worked for be scavenged by wolves, weather and progressive politicians. I will continue doing everything in my power to drive this nation back to the liberty principles upon which she was founded and I trust you will do the same. The dream called America only dies if we give up.
