DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR DAVE, After listening to your show, I want to try to get control of my finances, but I’m afraid to open up the bills. I make about $60,000 a year, but it’s a real struggle just to keep my head above water financially. My checking account is always overdrawn, and I don’t know where to start in catching up. Can you help? ~Gail

Dear Gail, Trust me, I know it can be scary. But the easiest way to attack this thing is by taking one slow, sure step at a time. Try not to let worry consume you in the process, either. First, sit down, take a deep breath, and open all the unopened bills. Throw away any duplicates, and keep only the most recent statements and notices. The unknown is always scarier than the known, so facing the bills and cutting that stack in half right off the bat will help reduce a lot of your initial anxiety. Next, let’s start a debt snowball. List all the debts you owe, from smallest to largest, making one column for the payoff balance, one column for the amount you need to get current on that debt, and one column for the single payment amount when you get current. Total each column — the payoff balance, the amount to get current, and the single payment. I promise it won’t be as bad as you think. Finally, make a monthly budget. Prioritize your needs, starting with food, utilities, house payments and transportation. When it comes to your debts, pay as much as you can on the smallest one while making minimum payments on all the others. You can do this, Gail. If you’ll follow my plan, I think you’ll see improvement in several areas of your life and you’ll feel good about the progress you’re making, too! ~Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business, and CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven bestselling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 12 million listeners each week on 575 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. Two little boys were visiting their grandfather, and he took them to a restaurant for lunch. They couldn't make up their minds about what they wanted to eat. Finally the grandfather grinned at the server and said, "Just bring them bread and water." One of the little boys looked up and quavered, "Can I have ketchup on it?"

NEW EVENT AT ThIS YEAR'S SEED ShOW! In partnership with the North Central Montana CattleWomen, the Seed Show committee brings you a brand new event: The Beef Cook Off! Be sure to get your entries in for the Thursday evening event to be held at 6:00. These entries will be blind-judged so no one knows who the cook is, and judged based on these characteristics: 1. Appearance (Dish must be appealing) 2. Flavor 3. Palatability 4. Texture 5. Tenderness 6. Color (Dish should look appetizing) There are two cash prizes awarded to winners. The first place Judges' Choice award is $150 and the First Place People's Choice award is $150. Prizes are being donated by the Montana Seed Show and the North Central Montana CattleWomen. Winners are required to attend the banquet on Saturday night of the Seed Show to recive prize monies. Please direct questions and inquiries to Kellie Rasmussen at (406)3534524.

INTEREST MEETING: "hUMAN TRAffICKING" Sponsored by the Domestic Engineers, this year's interest meeting takes place on Saturday of the Seed Show at 11:00am in the Harlem High School Library, and tackles a topic of importance to families across the world. Blaine County Undersheriff Frank Billmayer will be instructing participants about human trafficking and the key elements important in prevention for the sake of our area's young people. Blaine County Sheriff's Office is an affiliate member of the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force program is a nationwide initiative started in 1998 under the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention. By 2007, every state in the union had a funded ICAC task force program. The ICAC program helps state and local law enforcement officials work together to educate the public, investigate cases and arrest those who use computers to prey upon and exploit children. ICAC also encourages law enforcement agencies to work with prosecutors on holding these criminals responsible for their actions. Undersheriff Billmayer is a valuable asset in our local area with his extensive training in undercover chatting and computer forensics, with several successful sting operations targeting child sex predators under his belt. Blaine County is fortunate to have his expertise at our disposal in this region of Montana.

BANQUET ENTERTAINMENT: CASI JOY Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, little miss Casi Joy has hit the music scene in many genres and incorporates musical skills that range from vocal to guitar, piano and even dance. An active performer since the age of five, she hit the Midwest Opry Circuit at age 10, and then spent several years with Disney beginning at the age of 13. Rock music was her mainstay in the early years of her career, having been trained in the School of Rock, but after coming to Nashville in 2015 she carved out her place in the country music world. Casi uses her inuence to affect animals, children and education, especially musical education and special needs events. She performs at charity functions and donates time to teaching. Her recent debut of "Love on Repeat" is garnering lots of attention and the folks at this year's banquet get to absorb a bit of her lilting entertainment.

See you at the SEED SHOW!

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Good Habits

I developed a cattle drive business in the 1990s. Twenty guests trailing 200 cows up the rugged Little Horn Canyon taught me to have absolute control of what I could control because surprises hid behind every rock. Before the first orientation ride, we explained proper saddling and unsaddling procedures. We stressed tying your bridle to the front saddle strings, neatly looping the latigo into the D-ring and tying the breast collar and cinches to the off-side saddle strings. Doing so served dual purposes. First, to be moving the herd at daybreak required guests saddling in the dark and everyone uniformly securing everything in a single unit made saddling smoother. Secondly, our mountain pastures were filled with bold, camp-savvy deer. Prior to tying the tack, many bridles disappeared in the timber courtesy of the salt-starved critters chewing on the reins. Occasionally, the deer would do a real number on a cinch or latigo, but migrating saddles are easier to find. Hoping my obsessive-compulsive behavior would become infectious, every spring I reminded the crew to properly tie bridles and cinches as well as correctly coil manty and lash ropes. I assumed everyone would eventually adopt my idiosyncrasies as habit. Such was rarely the case. We were unsaddling back at the ranch after a week-long July trip and my 12-year-old nephew, Trent, moaned, “The guests are gone, so do we have to tie up our cinches?” Good habits had not yet become his second nature and this brings me to my point. America is at a crossroads and Trump supporters should not think the battle ended when the smoke cleared on November 9th. Establishment Republicans, lifelong bureaucrats, and ruling class Democrats are conspiring with the national media to undo last November’s presidential election. Journalists abandoned impartiality decades ago and have become so enamored with progressivism nearly every story is fake news. Their truth is so colored, I no longer wholeheartedly believe the obituary column. President Trump is not a shiny politician as evidenced by the pace he is advancing the issues upon which he campaigned. Imagine that. Irish statesman Edmund Burke told us in 1770, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” President Trump needs backup, so patriots must develop daily habits of speaking the truth in the town square whether via social media, radio waves or the written word. Most hard working Americans will agree with you, but few are courageous enough to be the first to stand for liberty. Saving America is a good habit.

NATIONAL AGRICULTURE WEEK March 19 – March 25, 2017 America’s farmers, ranchers and growers are some of our nation’s greatest assets. Not only do we rely on agriculture for our food, feed, fiber, and fuel, our agricultural producers preserve our environment, and help drive our national economy. This week is a great time to consider the important contributions that American agriculture makes to our lives. 2016 WAS AN AMAZING YEAR IN MONTANA AGRICULTURE! • We have 2.6 million head of beef cattle in Montana. • There are 14,000 dairy cattle in Montana. • There are over 200 registered beekeepers in Montana. Montana ranks in top 5 states in the US for honey production. • Montana grew 2.5 million acres of hay and forage • Montana planted 5.6 million acres of all wheat and grain, third highest state for planted wheat acres in the US • Montana grew 700 tons of cherries • Lentils and peas were grown on 835,000 acres in Montana • Montana ranks second in the US with almost 500,000 organic acres • Montana grew approximately 2,000,000 bushels of organic wheat in 2016 • Montana agritourism joins our talented farmers, ranchers and production facilities with the population, to share our great state and agricultural products at the peak of perfection. • Agriculture is responsible for one out of every 12 jobs in America. American families spend only 6 or 7 cents out of every dollar on food – less than almost any other nation and half as much as in Japan or Italy. In the last 30 years alone, producers reduced soil erosion by more than 40% and agriculture has gone from being the leading cause of wetland loss to leading the entire nation in wetland restoration efforts. Today, through the production of renewable energy like wind and biofuels, farmers and ranchers increasingly help move our nation towards energy independence. For generations, America’s farmers and ranchers have helped our nation stay strong. Let’s use National Agriculture Week to recognize the important work our farmers and ranchers do for this country and the world and say, Thank you! *Source: United States Department of Agriculture. *********************************************************************** Join the Phillips County Volunteer Fireman on National Ag Day, March 21st, in Malta for a free-will donation lunch and celebration of agriculture, at the Fire Hall in Malta. Come on out and enjoy the car/tractor show, and have lunch on the firemen.
