DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.
DEAR DAVE, My wife and I argue a lot about finances. We’re trying to get more control over our money, and she has been listening to you. That’s helped a lot. She’s also a lot more frugal than I am, and our biggest point of contention right now is how we handle our spending money. Whenever I work overtime at my job, I feel like I should be able to put the overtime pay toward my spending money. What are your thoughts on this? ~Josh Dear Josh, No way, dude! You don’t work overtime for your little boy wants. You work overtime, and rake in that extra cash, for the good of your family. That’s the manly thing to do. Now, that’s not to say you both can’t have a little spending money. It also doesn’t mean that you can’t treat yourself once in a while if you’re working your tail off. I mean, if I’m working 70 to 80 hours a week I may give myself a little inexpensive treat in the midst of all that. So, my spending money budget should reflect that. But it shouldn’t reflect a sense that I get to play more because I work extra, while the rest of the family suffers. Buy-Sell-Trade: Vintage Collectibles at Kokomo For Sale: IH 886 tractor w/ cab, Joe's Trading Post, Chester front end loader w/ grapple and bale Montana. 406-759-6472. 3-II roller on back, rebuilt engine last year, 6500 total hrs, $9500. John Deere model 60 tractor, $3000. 5 Looking for Work: Have other antique tractors: McCormick farm experience driving truck, Deering 830, Ferguson 35 diesel, operating machinery. Also worked Farmall M, (2) Case tractors. Or butchering & cutting meat. Some make offer on any. 406-374-2728. 4-I exp. with cows. Have a family. In Billings area now, but can relocate. Call 406-302-1292. 3-II
Sorry, man. I think you knew what I was going to say. Step up, be good to your family first, and then your good times will come. If you haven’t learned it already, you’ll soon discover that those good times are best ones! ~Dave DEAR DAVE, My daughter is 15, and she’s had jobs around the house and been on commission and the envelope system for years. She’s very good about saving and not spending on silly things. We recently opened a checking account for her, and I was wondering what bills you think we should assign for her to pay on her own? ~Suzanne Dear Suzanne, This sounds a lot like we did with our kids. She’s obviously bright and motivated, so the first thing you do is explain to her the seriousness and responsibility associated with a checking account. The next step is for her to balance the checkbook with you looking over her shoulder. Do this with her for several months, while you keep one on the account, too. After that, I want her to do it alone and show you her work. Her balance should match yours and the one at the bank. As soon as she demonstrates competency, and you feel comfortable that she can handle things, I want you to start putting her clothing budget in the account. You know, the weirdest thing happened with our girls at this stage. They suddenly started shopping at less expensive stores. It’s amazing when they see that the dollars associated with these purchases can run out. My bet is you’ll see some changes in her value choices.

Free Car Care Event Scheduled at American Garage Chinook, Montana – In celebration of Spring Car Care Month in April, American Garage in Chinook is holding a free vehicle inspection day on Wednesday, April 19th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 40440 US Highway 2 East in Chinook. Motorists can learn more about the benefits of performing scheduled maintenance and needed repair at this event. These free vehicle inspections can disclose potential safety and operational problems because of deficiencies such as low brake fluid or under-inflated tires. Nine out of 10 vehicles going through the check up lanes show consumer neglect according to a study released by Car Care Aware. Top problem areas are motor oil, windshield wipers, air filters, belts, hoses and lights. Beyond the effect that vehicle neglect can have on safety, dependability and performance, a discovery during a check-up lane inspection can help prevent a breakdown or costly repair. Stop by and let our professional technicians identify opportunities for you to improve your vehicle's gas mileage, enhance performance and increase safety. There will also be professional parts suppliers on hand to answer any questions about their products offered and the warranties available. Car Care Month is a nationwide effort to focus motorists’ attention on the importance of vehicle care and maintenance. During Spring Car Care Month in April, many repair facilities and auto parts stores join local businesses or civic groups to sponsor free vehicle check-ups. No appointment is necessary, simply arrive anytime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The inspections include checking fluid levels, tires, lights and other system components. After the inspection is completed, employees review any issues with the motorist and provide information about proper vehicle maintenance and repair. The goal of check lanes is to help motorists learn how to "Be Car Care Aware." “We are hopeful that motorists will appreciate our Car Care Month check-up event” says Scott DePriest, owner of American Garage. “We really want to stress the importance of preventative maintenance and help consumers protect their investments.” American Garage opened in 2006 and the company has grown immensely since that time. Their technicians specialize in repairing any make or model with expertise. Whether you need just an oil change, major repair, Annual DOT Inspection, or maintenance to your favorite vehicle, call or visit American Garage today. “We are proud of the fact that we house some of the most stateof-the art equipment in the area.” For more information about this event, please contact Scott, Heather or the crew at American Garage (406) 357-4201 in Chinook, email heather@ americangarage.net or visit their website or Facebook page. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” campaign, educating consumers about the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair. A man was speeding down the highway, feeling secure in a gaggle of cars all traveling at the same speed. However, as they passed a speed trap, he got nailed with an infrared speed detector and was pulled over. The offi cer handed him the citation, received his signature and was about to walk away when the man asked, "Offi cer, I know I was speeding, but I don't think it's fair. There were plenty of other cars around me going just as fast, so why did I get the ticket?" "Ever go fi shing?" the policeman suddenly asked the man. "Ummm, yeah... so," the startled man replied. The offi cer grinned and added, "Ever catch ALL the fi sh?"

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58
Long Term Capital Gains
This past weekend, the trophy wife and I ran the Grasslands Marathon in Decatur, Texas. This trail race was number 19 in our quest to finish one 26.2 mile event in all 50 states. Saturday’s sun warmed these LBJ National Grasslands to 86 degrees and it was challenging running the sandy trails in the mesquite underbrush. Because our winter training was on the icy streets of Laurel, we were ill-prepared for the Texas heat. The runner’s motto of “Death before DNF (Did Not Finish)” inspired our less-than-stellar, six-hour finish, but rather than dwelling on race day sand, sweat and sun, this week’s point appeared the evening before. Druann and I removed sugar and flour from our training table two years ago, so we traded the traditional pre-race pasta dinner for a steak at Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes in downtown Decatur. Around six o’clock, we stepped through their front door and were immediately greeted by four high school age employees. They were polite, friendly and escorted us to our table. Very shortly, our server took our order and delivered our bottle of wine. The restaurant was busy and a dozen college-age servers hustled between tables and not once did I see the face of a staff member illuminated by a smart phone. We complimented our waitress and asked to speak to the manager. The manager stepped to our table and he was the biggest human being I have ever seen. Imagine the NBA’s Irish, superstar, Shaquille O’Neal, wearing a polo shirt and Dockers for the proper picture. Expecting cranky customers, we complimented him on his crew and he instantly warmed to our conversation. His Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes ran like a well-oiled machine. In terms of work ethic, millennials, have dutifully earned a bad reputation, but it is not entirely their fault. Telling them they are special since pre-school, confusing their logic centers with common core and destroying their imaginations with smart phones and televisions has groomed them to accept the progressive indoctrination that mediocrity is the supreme ideal. This is completely contrary to American liberty and this brings me to my point. If you hire young people, and you should, turn them into little capitalists by teaching them how to work. Teach them the inherent value in hard work, a job done to perfection and exceeding customer’s expectations. The young Texans were impressive, but there is no reason youngsters elsewhere are any less trainable. Attention prospective employers: We are talking about the generation who will be changing your bedding and monitoring your urinary catheter when you are in a nursing home. A little effort now could provide long-term capital gains in your final days.

FROM MONTANA FISH WILDLIFE AND PARKS WATCH OUT FOR WILDLIFE ON THE ROADS FWP would like to remind folks to watch for deer (and other animals) on the road, especially during the early morning and early evening hours when both visibility is difficult and animals are sometimes more active. With the recent hour time change, many folks who are commuting are now an hour “forward” and may see more activity. As our deer numbers are continuing to make a comeback across the region, more and more animal-vehicle accidents are bound to occur. In addition, the spring “fawning” season is just around the corner, and deer are often moving from place to place. Please use the following advice when driving on MT highways and roads, taken from Geico.com: Preventive Techniques • When driving through an area known for high deer populations, slow down and observe the speed limit. The more conservative you are with your speed, the more time you will have to brake if an animal darts into your path. • Always wear a seat belt. • Watch for the shine of eyes along the roadside and immediately begin to slow. • Use your high beams whenever the road is free of oncoming traffic. • Pay close attention to caution signs indicating deer or other large animals. These signs are specifically placed in high-traffic areas where road crossings are frequent. • Whenever possible, try not to drive at dawn and dusk, when visibility is most difficult.

Encountering a Deer • Never swerve to avoid a deer in the road. Swerving can confuse the deer on where to run. Swerving can also cause a head-on collision with oncoming vehicles, take you off the roadway into a tree or a ditch, and greatly increase the chances of serious injuries. • If you do collide with a deer (or large animal), try to let off the brakes at the moment of impact. Braking through the impact can cause the hood of your vehicle to dip down, which can propel the animal through the windshield. • Call emergency services if injuries are involved, or the local police/ highway patrol if no one is injured, but damage has been caused to your property or someone else’s. Salvage permit If you or someone else has unfortunately struck a deer, there is the option to salvage it with a permit. The 2013 MT Legislature passed a bill that allows for the salvage of deer, elk, moose, and antelope killed as a result of a collision with a motor vehicle. Some important information on the salvage permit • Permits are available at no cost online through the fwp.gov web page. • To possess salvaged wildlife a person must obtain a salvage permit. A person has 24 hours to apply for and get a salvage permit. • A person may pick up an animal that he/she did not hit. The process is the same and he/she must obtain a salvage permit through this web page. • Anyone who salvages a road-killed deer, elk, moose, or antelope will be required to remove the entire animal from where it is found. Parts or viscera cannot be left at the site. To do so is a violation of state law and would encourage other wildlife to scavenge in a place that would put them at risk of also being hit.
