IRS SCAM ALERT: DON'T CALL THEM BACK

It all sounds pretty scary when you pick up the phone or listen to the voicemail. The recorded computer voice indicates you are being sued by the Internal Revenue Service and must call the 800# immediately to avoid being arrested. When you call the number back and give them your name, a variance of the following situation plays out. You are told by an "officer" that you owe money to the IRS due to miscalculations or false information on several years of returns, resulting in fees, taxes and penalties owing of several thousand dollars. You must take care of this immediately to prevent it from going to court, or from someone showing up at your door in the next couple hours to arrest you. The real IRS has been watching this scam for years, attempting to crack down on perpetrators. What do you do if it happens to you? Blaine County Undersherriff Frank Billmayer stresses you NOT return the call to the number on the recording, as this can generate more calls to your number. Also, never give out personal information to people who you have not initiated contact with for valid reasons. This includes sensitive information like social security numbers, banking information, debit/credit cards, birthdates, etc. Billmayer also reminds that the real IRS will not call you about any legitimate tax issues; they will send letters throught the mail. If you do give out sensitive information to these scam artists, Billmayer suggests monitoring your credit report, and also searching "Tax Scams" on the www.irs.gov website for ways to report your loss, and steps to take.

Dine-In or call ahead for Carry-Out.

DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

I’d pass on this offer. It’s not a good deal. I’m glad they got some money. I mean, that’s great for them. If they want to do some real estate investing, that’s awesome, too. If they want to give their kids a gift out of the inheritance money, that would be a very nice, generous thing to do. But no, we’re not going for a deal where they have ownership in your home. Things like that end up messy, and it won’t get you where you really want to be. Even if it does, you won’t like the trip! If you take a deep look into this, you’ll begin to understand there are some things involved that will change the nature of your relationship with your in-laws. Every time you see them and they see you, they’ll see dollar signs. Dinners together will start to taste different, and they’ll feel different, too. Protect your relationships and your family, Cynthia. Please don’t do it. ~Dave

DEAR DAVE, When you use the envelope system, what should you do with any leftover money? ~Mandy Dear Mandy, My suggestion would be to carry it over to the next month. Lots of folks don’t use all the money in their clothing envelope during a month. There’s nothing wrong with letting a little extra build up in one of your categories if you don’t spend it all in a given month or two. You should be hitting the budget pretty close each month on categories like food. Getting out of debt and managing your money wisely doesn’t mean going hungry. If you do end up with a little left over in the food envelope, treat yourself to a nice dinner out, or buy something that’s food-oriented. But it’s okay to carry a few categories over from month to month. Just make sure you don’t get crazy and blow that money on something outside the intended category, or on stuff you really don’t need. ~Dave

Piano Tuner It seems that every time John, our piano tuner, comes to our house, he scolds me for waiting too long between tunings. I agree with him that it should be done every six months, but I don't really think about it until the piano sounds off-key. Last time he came over, I was on the defensive. "If you would send out a postcard reminder like the dentist," I declared, "I would make sure to call you for an appointment in a timely fashion." Without hesitating, he replied, "From now on, when the dentist sends you a postcard, call me."

Cutting Class A teacher was reprimanding a teenager in the hall. "Do you mind telling me whose class you're cutting this time?" "Like," the young teen replied, "uh, see, okay, like it's like I really don't like think like that's really important, y'know, like because I'm y'know, like I don't like get anything out of it." "It's English class, isn't it?" replied the smiling teacher.

Fort Peck Reservoir Angler Creel Survey Underway Through September Anglers on Fort Peck Reservoir this summer may be asked a few questions about their fishing experience when they come off the water. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is conducting an angling “creel” survey on the state’s largest and most popular warm water fishery to monitor catch rates of popular game fish and determine level of satisfaction with the fishery. The data-gathering, face-to-face surveys will be based at marinas and boat ramps around the reservoir. Creel clerks will ask several questions about the day’s fishing and will also measure all harvested fish. “The interview is short and shouldn’t take more than a couple minutes,” said Fort Peck Reservoir fisheries biologist Heath Headley. According to Headley, detailed information gathered from these surveys helps FWP better manage the Fort Peck fisheries by providing information on fishing pressure, size of fish harvested and angler catch rates. “We’d like to thank all anglers in advance for their cooperation during these surveys and wish everyone the best of luck fishing this summer,” Headley said. If there are any questions, please contact Headley at 406-526-3471, or email hheadley@mt.gov.

Wheat markets continued to push higher, led again by Minneapolis as flour millers aggressively compete for very tight supplies of high protein spring wheat. The below-average protein crop being harvested in the southern plains is adding to the problem as that wheat will also need to be blended, but the trade is wondering with what. The winter wheats also found some support on their own this week on declining crop conditions in Europe and Ukraine, both major wheat producers and exporters. The row crops of corn and soybeans were mixed as weather forecasts offered a host of conflicting outlooks. Good rains fell this week over much of the parched northern plains and then stretched into the western Midwest, which had been trending drier. The longerrange outlooks are suggesting above normal temps for the Midwest through July and August, with rainfall outlooks appearing to trend drier for the western half of the heartland.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Intentionally Indoctrinating Ignorance

Decades back, I performed a necropsy on a 600-pound feeder steer which dropped dead upon exiting a farmer’s squeeze chute. The owner suspected an anaphylactic reaction to the sulfa boluses he administered and he wanted confirmation. I sliced the steer open and discovered he had suffered a lacerated esophagus as a calf and over months, a forage-filled pouch had developed in his throat. Before I explain the exact cause of death, readers unaccustomed to cow manure should know sulfa boluses are the size of a 12-gauge shotgun shell and most ruminants easily swallow them. This critter could not. The first bolus lodged in the opening to this pharyngeal pouch completely blocking the esophagus. The second bolus was subsequently forced directly down the windpipe and choked the steer. His fate was sealed upon swallowing the first bolus, so giving the second was as futile as administering medicine to the dead; an analogy coined by Thomas Paine in 1777. In American Crisis, Paine wrote, “To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is ‘like administering medicine to the dead.’” His message fits today’s climate crisis worshipers who mindlessly chant American capitalism is destroying the planet. Bombarding leftists with climate facts is as futile as administering medicine to the dead, but nonetheless, I am going to try after mentioning two more famous sayings. Mark Twain told us “It is easier to fool someone than convince them they have been fooled.” The indoctrinated will never willingly accept facts contrary to what they have been trained, because to do so requires them to consume a heaping helping of humble pie. My third truth comes from President Reagan who paraphrased another Twain adage by saying “It’s not that my liberal friends are ignorant, it is just that so much of what they know to be true, just isn’t so.” This brings me to my point. The entire global warming scheme is founded on the hypothesis man’s carbon emissions are warming the planet, but honest data study shows global temperatures are stable, or decreasing, despite increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Causation simply does not exist. The ruling class panicked at the rejection of the Paris Accords because they know their con is unsustainable. They need you in chains now! The climate will get colder, warmer, drier and wetter regardless man’s efforts. These three truths—administering medicine to the dead, convincing victims they have been conned and exposing truth over erroneous perception, perfectly describe Reality Winner, the 25-year-old, NSA contractor charged with trafficking classified documents. Her Facebook posts and tweets demonstrate outstanding climate crisis indoctrination. Patriots must reeducate the institutionally misinformed anywhere and everywhere they are found. To cleanse the consciousness of the heavily indoctrinated will take enormous repetition of truth, so it will not be easy. In the end, it will be worth it.

Keep Your Eye Out For Swift Fox Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks encourages people to report any live or road-killed sightings of swift fox to their local FWP biologist. To report sightings, people need to be able to tell the difference between swift fox, red fox and coyotes. Swift foxes are about the size of a house cat, smaller than red foxes and only about a fifth the size of coyotes. Red foxes are red, with some variations, and have white-tipped tails. Swift foxes have grayishred fur and a black-tipped tail. Coyotes can have similar coloring and tail markings, but again are much larger. Juvenile coyotes could resemble swift foxes certain times of the year. Swift fox were once abundant on the Great Plains, but in the early 1900s numbers began to decline in response to government poisoning campaigns aimed at wolves, prairie dogs and ground squirrels. Swift foxes lost a prey source in prairie dogs and squirrels, and when wolves declined, they couldn’t outcompete coyotes and red foxes for food. In 1969, Montana declared swift fox basically extinct locally. However, due in part to transplant programs in Canada, sightings of swift foxes have increased in eastern and central Montana since the 1980’s, leading to stable populations in north-central Montana that support a trapping season. Swift fox are year-round residents, inhabiting prairies and arid plains. Largely nocturnal, swift foxes can range over several square kilometers a night. They breed from late December to early March, with a single litter of three to six pups born late March to early May. Young are raised in an underground den, emerging in early June and dispersing in late summer or early fall. Locations of swift fox can give biologists valuable information, such as better understanding of the distribution of fox and location of dens. In addition, studies are being conducted with radio collared fox, and any help in locating foxes and their dens is crucial to the study. If you happen to spot a swift fox, please contact your local biologist and if possible, get a GPS point or accurate map location of the sighting. In Region 6, direct all sightings to Heather Harris at 406-228-3725, or email heharris@mt.gov.
