THROW THE ULTIMATE TAILGATE PARTY (Family Features) Football season is back, and that means it's time to stock up on all the tailgating essentials. Nailing the food lineup is key because few things can ruin a good game like gettig "hangry" before kickoff. This year, kick your game up a notch with simple tailgating recipes that bring the perfect blend of flavor and heat. These easy recipes will get you enjoying the festivities in no time, whether you're tailgating at the stadium or homegating on your couch. No matter which team you and your friends are rooting for, there's one thing that all football fans can agree on:; wings are the MVPs of game day. Wings have been holding the line ever since 1964, when Frank's RedHot was the key ingredient in the first ever Buffalo wings. After all these years, there's a reason wings keep their defending champ status; they're easy to make and a surefire way to deliver that classic Buffalo flavor. Just bake the wings for half an hour to get that crispy coating, toss with your tw-ingredient buffalo sauce and you're all set. Serve them up with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks and you'll be on your way to the untimate tailgate. In order to make sure you've got the win locked in, have more than one play in your back pocket. Turn to another tried-and-tru, one-pot classic; chili. Don't overthing it - all you need to do is brown some ground beef, add some onion then crushed tomoatoes, beans, hot sauce and seasoning. All you need is 15 minutes to build flavor and you're good to go. Even easier, let your slow cooker do the work. Finish it off with shredded cheese, scallions, sour cream and more hot sauce, and you'll have the hearty chili you need to keep the tailgate going strong. Enjoy your chili on its own or spoon it on top of hot dogs, nachos and whatever else you have on your plate. For more tailgate tips and great-tasting game day recipes, visit franksredhot.com/recipes. Buffalo Chicken Wings 2 1/2 pounds chicken wing pieces 1/2 cup Frank's RedHot Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce 1/3 cup butter melted blue cheese dressing & celery sticks Heat oven to 450 F. In foil-lined pan, back wings 30 minutes until crispy, turning once. Source: Frank's RedHot

DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey?

FWP PROPERTIES IN PHILLIPS AND VALLEY COUNTY NO LONGER HAVE FIRE RESTRICTIONS Following county officials’ recommendations, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks fishing access sites (FASs) and other properties in Phillips and Valley counties will no longer have any fire restrictions. Where normally allowed, campfires will again be permissible. As of press time, FWP properties in the following counties in Region 6 are still in Stage 1 restrictions: Hill, Blaine, Garfield, Richland, Roosevelt, and Sheridan. Daniels county remains in a burn ban. Please heed all signs posted on FWP properties on whether fires are permissible. For updates on restrictions and closures around the state, go to fwp. mt.gov and under the “news” tab, click on “drought and fire.” ~ Marc Kloker

Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR DAVE,

I graduated from college two years ago, and I have a good job making $60,000. I have about $10,000 in student loan debt, but my mom and dad have a real issue with their roof. It’s leaking in places to the point they have to set buckets around to catch the water, and I’ve gotten repair estimates of $3,000 to $5,000. They’re good, hard-working, blue collar folks, but they’re less fortunate financially and have more debt than I do. What should I do first — help them fix the roof or pay off my student loan debt? ~ Jordan

DEAR JORDAN,

You’ve got a great spirit, man. If I woke up in your shoes, I’d probably help them fix the roof first. The only way I would do that, though, is if they agree to let you help them address the reasons they don’t have any money. If you have the cash, go ahead and pay for the roof. But let them know they must pay you back by getting some financial counseling. I know you love your mom and dad, and they work too hard to be broke. We’re not talking about you shaming or condemning them in any way. Talk to them in a loving, caring way, but you have to address the situation. If they’ve worked all their lives and can’t come up with $3,000, something’s wrong. The fact they don’t have any money is the symptom. The problem is they’ve mishandled the dollars they earned. Even if you don’t make a lot, you can have cash set aside for emergencies if you manage it well. You’re a young guy making good money, so there’s no reason you can’t do both things quickly. Help your folks with the roof, then turn around and knock out that student loan debt. It won’t be a huge burden to you. But remember, you fixing their lives without them fixing their lives will be a burden — to all of you! ~ Dave

DEAR DAVE,

We’re debt-free except for our house. I’ve been talking to a friend about how much money to allow for fun in your budget. The other day we bought a $100 bottle of wine, and she thought that was unreasonable. What’s your opinion? ~ Beth

DEAR BETH,

Something like that depends entirely on your overall financial situation. Buying a $100 bottle of wine is pretty stupid if you only make $20,000 a year. It’s not unreasonable, though, if you make $200,000 a year. Having a great income-to-asset ratio and living debt-free gives you the opportunity to relax and enjoy a few things. You’ve got to take the whole picture into account. I know a guy who makes well over $15 million a year, and he bought a $200,000 car. As a ratio, that’s a very small percentage of his income. So, it’s kind of silly to say an item is too expensive, or an irresponsible purchase, based on price alone. ~ Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 13 million listeners each week on 585 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. LAZY WORKER A construction site foreman had 10 very lazy men working for him, so one day he decided to trick them into doing some work for a change. "I've got a really easy job today for the laziest one among you," he announced. "Will the laziest man please put his hand up." Nine hands went up. "Why didn't you put your hand up?" he asked the 10th man. "Too much trouble," he responded. 2000 Country Club Road * Turner, MT 59542 Phone 800-756-1817 Email: office@triciastrader.com www.TriciasTrader.com FAX: 888-796-8498

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Cow Doctor Gift Giving: Take Three My oldest granddaughter, Clara, helped trail cattle to the mountains the last two summers and she is hooked on cowboy life. She wants to follow my footsteps to vet school before owning a ranch and she is driven and smart enough to get it done. Clara is 14. A year ago, Clara became the owner of a gift horse, a 15-year-old Arab mare named Lacy, who had a love/hate relationship with her previous owner. Mostly hate, so I took the mare to the Breaks for test ride elk hunting. Lacy was tolerable for three days, but the fourth revealed her evil underbelly. While riding along a ridge, Lacy bowed her neck, chomped the bit and crow-hopped while galloping across the plateau, stopping only after I crashed her into a corner brace. She had two more fits that morning, with the third on top of a 200-foot clay bank overlooking the Missouri River. If Lacy was willing to tumble us both to the water below, she shouldn’t be carrying my grandkids, so in June, Lacy moved to France. Since then, Clara has been saving money for a real horse. For her 14th birthday Clara requested a family weekend riding horses. Although, it doesn’t take much of an equine athlete to pack my mini-Kimmels, my cavy is aging and I have pondered whether I should buy in, or sell out of the horse business. Because my heart is bigger than my brain, I crafted a plan to buy myself a new horse, but birthday gift it to Clara for year-round feed and care. Clearly a win-win. At dinner Friday night, I told Clara she needed her Muck Boots and slicker for an all-day appointment starting Saturday morning. She looked confused, so I tossed her the BLS Horse Sale Catalogue wrapped in a ribbon and bow. She glanced at the cover and tears streamed down her cheeks. Saturday morning, we hit the sale where we bid for five hours before scoring a nice seven-year-old paint gelding. I planned to take him to hunting camp and should he pass muster, he would winter at Clara’s in Great Falls. Sunday morning, I saddled up and circled through the pasture before swapping horses with Clara. By Sunday afternoon, she was loping the paint through the hills bareback, so my ingenious scheme backfired as I owned my new horse less than 24 hours. It wasn’t a total loss, as I learned a birthday horse scores far above dog collars and blenders, which is a tidbit worth remembering.

For many years, I believed that I was damaged goods and could only have a second-rate life. I thought that the sexual and emotional abuse I endured as a child was somehow my fault, that it had happened because something was wrong with me. And I felt a false sense of responsibility to fix my circumstances. But I couldn’t make that happen, which only caused more self-condemnation, and as a result, I didn’t like myself very much. For so long I believed this terrible lie about myself. And that’s a very easy thing to do, because you simply don’t know when you’re deceived. The lies we believe become our reality because they are truth to us. After I became a Christian, I thought that the only way God could love me was if I did everything right. That was just another lie that caused me to continually strive to do good, “impressive” things to earn the approval of God and people. I really thought I was something special when I was on the church board and in a leadership position. Another result of this deception was that I found it easier to see what was “wrong” with other people. I was so critical and judgmental of others. But the truth was, seeing the faults in others just kept me from seeing what was wrong with me for a long time. And that was exactly what the enemy wanted. In John 8:31-32 (NKJV), Jesus says, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” It’s so important for us to know the truth, because the lies we believe— especially about ourselves—can cause many other problems in our lives. That can mean trouble in relationships, in our work, even in our health and other areas of everyday life. But when we pursue a relationship with God and finally face truth—and that ultimately means the truth about ourselves—we grow spiritually. God is looking on the inside, on our heart. And He’s concerned about the motivation of our heart. He’s more interested in why we do the things we do than what we’re doing. I’ve learned to ask God on a regular basis, “Show me truth. Help me face the truth You show me—especially what You show me about myself.” Once God shows us the truth about ourselves, we can no longer hide from it. The Bible tells us the Holy Spirit leads us into all truth. He knows just how and when to guide us, and He is gentle and always does what is best for us. It’s not always easy, but I want to encourage you not to reject God’s guidance just because it may not feel good in the moment. Just because something doesn’t feel good doesn’t mean it’s not good for you. Remember, God always has His best plan for your life in mind. I remember when God prompted me to give away a dress a long time ago. It was a brand-new red dress that I’d bought and hadn’t worn yet. I really liked it. I was praying for a friend of mine one day and asked God what I could do to bless her, and He spoke to my heart to give her the red dress. Well, I didn’t want to give away my dress. Immediately, I began to reason with God, “But it’s new!” He told me once more to give her the dress. I tried again, “But God, I bought these really nice earrings to go with it.” He said to give her the earrings too! So I prayed, “God if this is really You…” Finally, I realized that red dress was too important to me. I had to face truth in that moment: Did I want to obey God or be selfish? I humbled myself and gave my friend the dress. You know, it really wasn’t about the dress…it was more about my heart. God was teaching me how to be a steward and not an owner of things. God may want to use you to bless someone else. If you are not so attached to things, it won’t be hard to give away something if He asks you to. We all have times like this in our relationship with God if we are willing to be completely honest with Him and let Him search our hearts. When we do, the best thing we can do is embrace the truth and let it set us free! Remember, we are created in the image of God. To be like Him, we must learn to examine our motives and be honest with ourselves when God shows us something that needs to change, because it is always for our good. Pray that you will know the truth so you can be set free from deception. And then face the truth God shows you—about you. Use each opportunity to grow and become more like Him. ********* For more on this topic, order Joyce’s four-CD series Sit, Stand, Walk, Run. Wheat markets were mixed with the winter wheats moving slightly higher while spring wheat continued its bearish trend. World wheat prices have rallied slightly in the past few weeks, supported primarily by rising Russian export prices and the ongoing drought in Australia. Corn was basically steady, but soybeans were supported by harvest delays here in the US and planting delays in Brazil due to early season dryness. Cattle prices were strongly higher, led by improving cash in both fed and feeder cattle. Beef demand appears to be following seasonal strength after the summer lull. Demand for feeder calves is also strengthening as corn harvest progresses and feed grains get cheaper. Supplies of lighter weight calves are lower than normal after the northern plains’ drought forced a reduction in herd numbers this summer. Strong economic growth was the feature this week in the financial markets. Despite a stronger dollar, the Dow reached new highs and helped support a stronger energy market. Metals weakened on the stronger dollar and on reports that inflation continues below the target rate. THIS IS A SOLICITATION. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks game wardens are seeking any information regarding a block management area (BMA) sign-in box that was vandalized in Blaine County. The incident occurred sometime around the weekend of Sept. 15 at the Halseth BMA box located on Barney Olson road about six miles south of Chinook. The sign-in box and signs were shot repeatedly with a 12-gauge shotgun. “Things like this vandalism are sad to see,” said Dirk Paulsen, Region 6 investigator. “It is a waste of sportsman’s dollars to both clean up and repair this mess, and it sends a poor message for the future of hunter access and the block management program.” Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to call Paulsen at 406230-2277 or call FWP’s 24-hour wildlife tip line at 1-800-TIP-MONT (1-800847-6668). The 1-800-TIP-MONT program is a toll-free number where one can report violations of fish, wildlife or park regulations. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000 for providing information that leads to a conviction.

LEARNING ABOUT DIVERSITY College is a great place for people to learn about different cultures, languages, and traditions. Rosa Salamanca, Community Relations Specialist, and Bradyn Fairclough, and Conciliation Specialist from the Community Relations Service of the Department of Justice in Denver, were on campus this week to help facilitate some positive discussions about diversity. The students were broken up into smaller groups so they could share their stories and learn from each other. Students had the opportunity to reflect and talk about how to debunk assumptions by learning about others' differences that they might have never considered before in interpersonal relationships. They also shared their thoughts about their experiences with discrimination (personal or as witnesses). A special thanks to the faculty who encouraged students to attend. The Office of Diversity Awareness and Multicultural Programs (ODAMP) will be sponsoring civil discourse conversations each month. ~ Montana State University Northern Network News
