DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR DAVE, I’m debt-free except for my home, and I’m considering having solar panels installed on the roof of the house. It would cost about $27,000. I have $80,000 in savings, but the company doing the installation will finance it all for just one percent interest. It’s almost like free money. My electric bills average around $310 a month, and I thought this would be a good way to save money in the long run. What do you think? ~ Michael DEAR MICHAEL, If you have to finance the project, my answer is no. My guess is the break-even analysis you’re trying to give me is the sales pitch your solar panel company gave you. That’s how they sell solar panels, but it doesn’t justify going into debt. You told me you have around $80,000 in savings right now. Why not just write a check? Let me ask you a question. What if you could borrow $10 million at one percent interest and put it in the stock market? Would you do that? Of course, not. It would be way too risky, right? Basically, we’re talking about the same kind of thing. I made you feel the risk by scaling things up in my scenario. You’re not feeling the risk right now because we’re talking about $27,000 instead of millions. This move wouldn’t bankrupt you, but wealthy people don’t do the kind of thing you’re talking about. Either pull the money out of your savings account and buy the panels, or don’t buy them at all! ~ Dave DEAR DAVE, I make $48,000 a year, and I have $35,000 in credit card debt. I owe $25,000 on my home, and I was thinking about taking out a loan against my house to pay off the credit cards. Is this a good idea? Mike ~ Mike

DEAR MIKE, I would never advise anything like this, unless it’s to avoid bankruptcy. Here’s the problem with that kind of plan. Most people who do that kind of thing don’t change their financial habits. In fact, they end up with a new mortgage and new credit card debt somewhere down the line. You need to start building a track record of paying off debt. Cut up the credit cards, slash your spending, and start living on a tight, written, monthly budget. Prove to yourself that you’re not going to take out a mortgage and turn around and run up a bunch of new credit cards. I want to see you not take on any new debt and reduce that $35,000 credit card bill dramatically over the next six months. If you can knock out half of it in a year, you can take care of the other half in another year or less. Then, you wouldn’t need a second mortgage!and put it in the stock market? Would you do that? Of course, not. It would be way too risky, right? Basically, we’re talking about the same kind of thing. I made you feel the risk by scaling things up in my scenario. You’re not feeling the risk right now because we’re talking about $27,000 instead of millions. This move wouldn’t bankrupt you, but wealthy people don’t do the kind of thing you’re talking about. Either pull the money out of your savings account and buy the panels, or don’t buy them at all! ~ Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. COLD SHOULDER After weeks of getting the cold shoulder from his wife, the unhappy husband fi nally confronted her: "Admit it, Linda. The only reason you married me is because my grandfather left me $10 million." "Don't be ridiculous," she replied. "I don't care who left it to you."

THE EXPLANATION A 4-year-old son was eating an apple in the back seat of the car, when he asked, "Daddy, why is my apple turning brown?" "Because," his dad explained, "after you ate the skin off, the meat of the apple came into contact with the air, which caused it to oxidize, thus changing the molecular structure and turning it into a different color." There was a long silence. Then the son asked softly, "Daddy, are you talking to me?

With 12 percent of our Treasure State suffering the drought of the century, over 300,000 acres of central Montana range and timberland has burned. Producers in the Missouri Breaks are a special breed and today’s column is for those far from the fire line, but whose actions may be the death nail for cowboys struggling to survive the wildfire. Consider what happened to our neighbors to the east. A North Dakota rancher recently suffered financial damage and loss of property as if his ranch burned in a sweeping prairie fire. It did not. Without smoke, flames or heat, his ag operation fell victim to the most dangerous threat of modern times—progressives blinded by good intentions teaming with Republicans eager to compromise. Here is how the fire started: In 2012, an animal welfare ballot initiative, Measure 5, was soundly defeated by North Dakota voters. Never yielding, the US Humane Society coerced the ND Farm Bureau to help shepherd their legislative version of Measure 5 through the 2013 legislative session. Sadly, after dangerous compromises and meaningless amendments, the bill became law and rendered a new normal in North Dakota. On April 22, 2017, Gary Dassinger’s Gladstone ranch was visited by law officers who began the process of confiscating animals deemed neglected. The time of the year, the age of the animals and their true body condition are insignificant technicalities compared to the truth Mr. Dassinger was unconstitutionally robbed of his property without notice or conviction in court. Fifth Amendment rights to due process of law no longer exist in North Dakota and by granting immunity to all individuals working to “save the puppies”, he has limited legal recourse. I served in Montana’s House in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013. Each session, animal rightists recruited legislators to introduce similar bills always disguised as “saving the puppies.” Although unique in technique, each elevated government power above the property rights of the animal owner. We tabled them all. Those who took my place in the 2015 and 2017 sessions also successfully rejected the same bills, but in 2019, Big Sky Country might not be so lucky and this brings me to my point. Missouri Break’s producers who nearly lost everything in the Lodgepole Complex Fire may find their surviving livestock a little thin over the next year. Give thanks constitutional, Montana legislators consistently defeated the “save the puppies” legislation, or the government could steal the few thin cows they have left. The USHS will return, so you best know the core belief of the legislator you send to Helena. Will they hold the Constitution as a sacred document, or do they discard it as outdated? It matters.

Wheat markets were mixed for the week as harvest progresses across the Northern Hemisphere. Production shortfalls in the US and Canada look to be offset by another record setting crop in Russia. Russia tends to set world price in the fall as they aggressively export before cold weather freezes over most of their ports. The market is bracing for another season of heavy offers out of the Black Sea region, with Ukraine’s harvest, after some crop stress early in the season, being slightly better than expected as well. Corn and soybeans were mixed as temperatures turned cooler than normal throughout most of the pollination period for both crops. Rainfall continues to be fairly limited in the western Midwest, but crop stress is mitigated by the cool temps. USDA will release their fi rst yield/production estimates based on crop condition ratings this week, with the trade expecting corn and soybean yields to be lower than last month’s estimate. Cattle markets were under pressure as support levels gave way in both feeders and live cattle. Cash markets weakened in the fed trade, as increasing slaughter numbers and weights are contributing to more beef production than the market can absorb. The drought in the northern plains continues to take a toll on pastures, forcing cattle into feedlots much sooner than normal and some herd liquidation as well. Financial markets were quiet. The jobs data was supportive but saber-rattling with North Korea is making investors skittish. Metals were higher with some suggesting it is a fl ight to safety. The US dollar managed to fi nd some bargain hunters after a push to 15-month lows. THIS IS A SOLICITATION.
