blaine county faiR DateS eXPlaineD Event overlap and a carnival booking conflict explain the significant change in Blaine County Fair dates. Last year the fair was held on July 12 through July 16. The dates for this year will be July 4 through July 8. According to Fair Board President, Don Richman, the Wolf Point Stampede moved their event date this year and next year to July on the same dates requested by the Blaine County Fair Board. “Because we both use the same carnival, Blaine County had to move to the first weekend in July so we could have the carnival. This happens whenever there are five weeks in July. Our only other choice was the end of August.” The Blaine County Fair will kick off on the 4th of July at the fairgrounds in Chinook, Montana, with the Kids Rodeo scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, July 4, which is also slated to be the Opening Day for the carnival. continued on p. 11

Region 6 Hunting Season Proposals for 2018-2019 to be Discussed at Four Meetings Across Northeast Montana Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will hold four public meetings in northeast Montana in January to gather comments on proposed hunting seasons and rules for the next two years. In addition, updated information will be presented on Chronic Wasting Disease, which has recently been detected in the state. Interested hunters are encouraged to attend these meetings to hear the proposals, ask questions, and make comments. The tentative rules and regulations, available for review and comment online now at fwp.mt.gov, were approved by the Fish and Wildlife Commission at their December meeting, and include statewide and local hunting regulations for all big game, migratory birds, and upland game birds. Every two years FWP considers changes to all hunting seasons, proposes changes from the previous biennium, and encourages public comment before the Fish and Wildlife Commission makes its final decisions in February. Public meetings are held across the state to present the proposed seasons and accept public comments. FWP and its commissioners will also accept written, online or emailed comments through Jan. 24. Some of the proposed hunting season and rules changes, relevant to Region 6, include: lengthening the elk shoulder seasons in the Missouri River Breaks and Bears Paw Mountains, additional mule deer and white-tailed deer antlerless B-licenses, changes to the archery antelope license drawing process, and expansion of the youth deer season. The public is encouraged to visit the FWP website for the full proposals or attend a public meeting. In northeast Montana, all public meetings are scheduled for 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the following dates and locations:
Glasgow Malta Havre Plentywood
Mon., Jan. 8, Cottonwood Inn Thurs., Jan. 11, Malta High School cafeteria Tues., Jan. 16, Hill County Electric, hospitality room Wed., Jan. 17, Sheridan Co. Courthouse, Jubilee Room
Comments may be submitted at these public meetings, online at fwp.mt.gov, or by mail to: FWP Wildlife Division, “attn: hunting season proposals,” PO Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620. Comments are due by 5 p.m. on Jan. 24, 2018. If there are any questions about the Region 6 meetings, please call the Region 6 Headquarters in Glasgow at 406-228-3700. John Michael Montgomery to Headline Northeast Montana Fair Concert GLASGOW, MONTANA –The Northeast Montana Fair (NEMF) Concert Committee is pleased to announce that chart-topping country artist John Michael Montgomery will bring his string of 15 number ones to Glasgow when he takes the NEMF stage on Saturday, August 4, 2018. With chart-toppers like “Rope the Moon,” “Life’s a Dance,” “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident),” and “I Swear,” Montgomery will likely inspire the crowd to sing along. After a multi-year hiatus, the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, Milk River Motor Sports, KLTZ/Mix-93, Glasgow Rodeo Committee, and Glasgow Tourism Business Improvement District worked together to resurrect the fair concert in 2016 and kept the momentum going into 2017. “With the continued, phenomenal support of our community,” says Committee Chair Haylie Shipp, “we will continue to build a bigger and better concert each and every year.” Just in time for Christmas stocking stuffers or New Year Cheer gifts, presale ticket vouchers are available at the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Adult tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the gate. Children under 5 will be able to attend the concert free of charge, while students between the ages of 5 and 12 can purchase a discounted, $20 ticket.

Plowing The Land A husband and wife were driving down a country lane on their way to visit some friends. They came to a muddy hole in the road and the car became bogged. After a few minutes of trying to get the car out by themselves, they saw a young farmer coming down the lane, driving some oxen before him. The farmer stopped when he saw the couple in trouble and offered to pull the car out of the mud for $50. The husband accepted and minutes later the car was free. The farmer turned to the husband and said, "You know, you're the tenth car I've helped out of the mud today." The husband looks around at the fields incredulously and asks the farmer, "When do you have time to plow your land? At night?" "No," the young farmer replied seriously, "Night is when I put the water in the hole in the road." 2000 Country Club Road * Turner, MT 59542 Phone 800-756-1817 Email: office@triciastrader.com www.TriciasTrader.com FAX: 888-796-8498

In response to my last ProfitTips one reader wrote that he found it hard to set targets and that he felt that if he could just make a little more each year that someday he’d be satisfied. While we may not phrase it quite the way he did, his approach is the way most of us go about trying to improve our situations. We are so busy working we find it hard to set targets and create a plan to achieve them. But “more” is not a number and “someday” is not a time. Both a measurable number and deadline are required to have meaningful targets. Without a profit target it is impossible to know where to aim and people tend to follow “false opportunities”. In other words, let’s say we come across an “opportunity” to run another 50 cows or 100 more steers 20 miles from home. There’s nothing wrong with that, if that’s what we need, but too often we pursue things that give us only a fraction of what we need to achieve our ultimate goal. If you add one small “opportunity” after another you may think you’ll eventually “make it.” I think just the opposite is true. I think you’ll be so busy and stretched so thin you’ll kill yourself, if not physically and financially, then emotionally and spiritually. It is even worse when the time and resources we invest in the false opportunity distract us from finding the breakthrough that could have made a real difference, something that would enable us to run 500 more cows, or 1,000. Perhaps you can achieve your life and business goals with 100 cows. Maybe it will take 1,000 or maybe 10,000. Maybe you should own them, maybe not. Maybe it can’t be done with cows. I don’t know what it will take to achieve your goals. The problem is neither do you, unless you have clearly defined them. Money is only important in that it helps us achieve some of our goals. You’ll find it is a lot easier to achieve those goals if you clearly identify them and set some quantifiable, time-bound targets.

MSU-N FOOTBALL...
I can tell you that we'll do everything we can, every single day to achieve those goals. Those are high goals, but that's what I believe. And I believe we can do that here. I want this program and our student-athletes to be successful, and I'll work relentlessly to help make that happen." "There are quality football players in this state," Rolin said. "It's about selling yourself to the kids, their parents, and to their high school coaches. Getting them excited about coming here to be Lights, and to know that they're going to succeed. Making sure they know they can succeed here, not just in football, but in all phases of life." "I'm very pleased that Andrew has agreed to head up MSU-Northern's football team. His knowledge, energy, and charisma came through in his interview. I'm confident, under his leadership, our program will be able to recruit the best student athletes to MSU-Northern. Those students will become our champions, in the classroom, on the field, and in the workforce," said Greg Kegel, Chancellor at MSU-Northern. Source: MSU-N Website

BLAINE COUNTY FAIR DATES...
The popular Dreamland Carnival will return with even more rides and activities planned than in 2017. The carnival will be open Wednesday evening through Sunday afternoon. The increasingly popular Pig Wrestling event will again be a Grandstand event for the second year, and it moves earlier in the Fair calendar, scheduled for Thursday, July 5. Two days of Bear Paw Roundup PRCA Rodeo action follow, moving one day later in the schedule as compared to last year, and will take place Friday and Saturday, July 6 and 7. The 4-H and FFA Youth Livestock Sale will be held Sunday afternoon, as usual. Ending the fair "with a bang," the fair's biggest event, the Blaine County Showdown Demolition Derby will occur on Sunday evening, July 8. There will again be free music and dancing at the beer garden after each night of the Bear Paw Roundup PRCA Rodeo and the Demolition Derby. "Becoming a bigger and better fair also makes scheduling more complex, as we need to work into rodeo calendars, carnival calendars, and meat processing calendars in coordination with other communities across the region," explained Richman. "Everyone competes for a limited number of summertime weekends, and with the way the calendar shifts each year, we found the 4th of July weekend is our best option--and really our only option this year." "We as a Fair Board are actually very excited about a 4th of July fair. Rodeo and Independence Day have traditionally gone hand-in-hand, and we love that the kids get to have their rodeo on the 4th," Richman added. "We wanted to get the word out early so that everyone can plan to make the Blaine County Fair part of their 4th of July weekend this year. With all the tremendous support from the community and the amazing growth in the past few years, we know this year's fair will be more exciting than ever," Richman said.
