St. Jude to Hold Pumpkin Patch Harvest Fundraiser St. Jude Thaddeus School invites everyone to their harvest fundraiser— St. Jude Pumpkin Patch 2018. The event will be held on October 19 – 20 from 10 AM- 7 PM in the grassy area between the school at 430 Seventh Avenue and St. Jude Thaddeus Church. Event organizers promise that this year's St. Jude Pumpkin Patch will feature everything that attendees loved from last year and more. In addition to pumpkins for sale— ranging in price from $5 to $10, depending on size—there will be bake sale items, lunch foods, and raffle items. The hay ride, petting zoo, face painting, games, photo booth, and leaf pool will all be free, as they were last year. The Pumpkin Patch was born from a desire to bring something to the Havre community that the entire family can enjoy together, an event that is fun for all ages. All Pumpkin Patch proceeds will go to St. Jude’s Home and School Organization, which is similar to a parent-teacher organization. According to their website, “St. Jude Thaddeus School intends to fulfill the goal of Catholic education by helping all children reach their full potential intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Watercraft in Montana Still Need Inspection Although many outdoor enthusiasts have transitioned from “fishing season” to “hunting season,” Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) would like to remind watercraft users that “inspection season” is not over. In addition to late-season anglers, hunters are currently utilizing watercraft for bow hunting and sheep hunting, and in the next few weeks, perhaps waterfowl hunting. Watercraft users need to remember the slogan Clean. Drain. Dry and continue to follow all laws and regulations related to Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inspections. Montana law requires everyone transporting motorized or nonmotorized watercraft to stop at all AIS inspections stations. This includes rafts, drift boats, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, personal pontoons, and sail boats. In addition, ALL watercraft that are coming in to Montana from out-of-state are REQUIRED to be inspected before launch. Currently, inspection stations are still in operation in many areas of the state. Locations can be found at cleandraindry.mt.gov/Watercraft-Inspections. In Region 6, inspection stations are currently operating at Nashua and Fresno Reservoir. In addition, out-of-state watercraft that did not encounter an open inspection station can be inspected at any regional FWP office, including the FWP Region 6 Headquarters in Glasgow and at the Havre Field Office. Remember, your watercraft must be inspected if:

Successful business models tend to hinge on delivering what consumers need, when they need it – a moving target that can be difficult to attain. As your consumers’ wants and needs continue to evolve, consider these ways to refresh your business without overhauling core principles. Reset short-term goals. Get to the root of the reasons you’re looking to refresh in the first place. Focus on what you’d like to change in the not-so-distant future and how you can accomplish it. Also make sure your short-term goals keep you on track for the long-term goals already established for your business. Refresh online materials. In today’s digital world, consumers have high expectations. Maybe your website is outdated, can’t keep up with traffic or, worse, is nonexistent. Freshen things up with a redesign or even just slight tweaks to make it easier for customers to navigate. For a simple solution, consider adding a blog section where new content can be posted weekly or monthly to give customers a reason to return and to help build your search engine ranking for specific keywords. Rethink storefronts. To help consumers make the most of their time, small business owners are partnering with other businesses to include their services under the same roof. Replace outdated strategies. If your business has been in operation for a while, there’s a chance your previously successful marketing strategies may be a bit out of touch. Consider your target audience and the ways you’re most likely to reach those consumers. For example, social media is a must to keep up with competition and there are ways you can amp up your strategy in the everevolving social space. Whether it’s posting short factoids, long-form information, links to online content or simple images of your products, it can be a productive way to reach your audience. Reconnect with consumers. If overhauling marketing strategies or diving headfirst into social media seems like a stretch for your small business, start small. Wheat markets were lower for the week, pressured mostly by spread liquidation as corn surged higher. World wheat prices are moving higher, typical for this time of year, but heavy rain in the Midwest is delaying corn harvest, prompting a strong corn rally that led large traders to cover corn shorts and exit wheat longs. Soybeans were unchanged as the market waits for a breakthrough on the US/China trade stalemate. The cattle complex was higher, led by feeder cattle. Cash dressed trade was down slightly while boxed beef moved higher. Feeder cattle cash prices were firm at most auction yards and demand for calves has been strong as we head into fall, supported by expectations of cheap feed with a large corn crop heading into the heart of harvest. The US dollar was firm following another interest rate hike by the Fed. Stocks have seen some profit taking after touching new all-time high recently. Concerns of higher interest rates pulling investment dollars into more secure treasuries are fueling some of the set-back in stocks. Think about this, too. You can’t just find a house and expect to get a good deal. Professionals who flip houses for a living often look at dozens of different properties to buy just one. It’s not an easy way to make money, and it’s not something I would advise doing from a distance. I know it can take a while to save up cash for a down payment on a home. But don’t let a case of house fever push you into making a bad financial decision. Have you considered getting a part-time job for a while to bring in some extra cash? A house should be a blessing, not a burden. Lights Football Program Has Impact Across Montana Twenty years ago, MSU-Northern (MSU-N) reinstated its football program, an action which has gone on to impact Montana’s high school football programs. Several former Northern Light football players and coaches are currently coaching football across the state. Close to home, Ryan Gatch, former Northern Assistant Coach, is currently in his third season as the head coach at Havre High School, where two former MSU-N football players also work as assistant coaches. Kino Detrick, allconference defensive end and one of the greatest pass rushers MSU-N has ever seen, coaches on the defensive side of the ball and will also coach the Blue Pony running backs this season. Back in 2001, Detrick set the Lights single-season record for sacks with 11.5, a mark that still stands today. Jacob Criner, who played tight-end for MSU-N in 2013, serves on the Blue Pony defensive coaching staff. Two hundred and eighteen miles south at Lewiston High School, MSU-N four-year starting quarterback Derek Lear, fulfills assistant coach duties. In his sophomore season at MSU-N, Lear earned First-Team All-Conference honors, while leading the league in both passing and total offense. He followed that up with a stellar 2012 campaign in which he threw for 2,798 yards, secured a school-record of 26 touchdowns, and rushed for nearly 400 more yards. Lear was rated in the NAIA’s top ten in both offense and passing at the end of the 2013 season. Lear, a native of Fairfield, holds 13 different MSU-N passing records. He has

thrown for 7,125 yards and 65 touchdowns in his career, while also holding nearly every single-game and singleseason passing mark in the MSU-N record book. Another assistant coach for the Eagles is Orin Johnson, a former wide-receiver for MSU-N and one of Lear’s favorite passing targets. For his career, Johnson averaged 40 catches and over 500 yards per season. Kyle Samson, who played three years for the Lights and finished his playing career as an NAIA All-American quarterback, is the Head Coach at Kalispell’s Flathead High School, where Travis Dean is his Assistant Coach. Dean, a native of Gilbert, Arizona, started his Northern career in the fall of 2010, and despite three different seasonending injuries in his career, Dean was considered a great teammate and leader. Other schools with MSU-N influence include Bozeman High School, where Levi Wesche serves as Head Coach; Great Falls High School, where Mark Samson—former MSU-N Head Coach—provides leadership as Head Coach and Coda Tchida performs as Assistant Coach. At Choteau High School, Luke Gunderson is Head Coach and Dan Yeager assists, while Ennis High School is coached by Chris Hess. In the September 2, 2018 406MTSPORTS.com Class AA football poll, Bozeman (Levi Wesche) was ranked #1, Kalispell Flathead (Kyle Samson) was ranked #3, and Great Falls High (Mark Samson) was ranked #5. These rankings provide a testament to the strength of Montana’s teams and to MSU-N’s influence in producing those teams.

Hard Work Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up To Be The best day of my life was the day my first child was born. He was delivered through an emergency C-section. I was surprised when they invited me to scrub up and be right by Kathy’s side as the doctor made the incision and gently lifted Jack out of her body. I don’t think I ever smiled so hard for so long. I’ll never forget it. A few weeks after the delivery, I was working with a local rancher. As we sat on the hillside eating our lunches I described the delivery, sharing my excitement. I remember wiping away tears of joy. He was overcome with emotion as well, but of a different type. As tears welled up in his eyes, he spoke of how he had worked long, hard hours on the ranch, rarely taking a day off and never going on vacation. He told me that had someone asked at the time, he’d say he was doing it for the kids. As he dried his eyes, he said that none of his three children wanted any part of the ranch. He described his relationship with them as cordial, but not loving. Shaking his head and pointing his finger at me he warned me, “Dave, hard work isn’t what it is cracked up to be. I worked hard to keep something that nobody wants.� I’ll never forget that either. Does your ranch support you and your family, or are you spending life supporting it? I hear people say with pride, “I’ve never taken a vacation.� But to me that’s not a badge of honor. It certainly isn’t a sign of a strong business. It’s a symptom of a weak, vulnerable business. You can’t run a sustainable business, or a sustainable life for that matter, on unsustainable effort. If you aren’t getting more life out of your ranch than you are putting in, something is wrong. People tend to treat their life as though it is something that is going to happen later. That’s a recipe for missing a lot of your life. Graduates of the Ranching For Profit School often share their successes with me. They tell me of increasing profit, improving cash flow, and restoring health to the land. But the stories that give me the most satisfaction are the ones about taking a family vacation, spending more quality time with their children and improving relationships. God has a great plan for each person’s life, and He wants us to enjoy every day of our lives. But we can’t do it if we live in fear and lack confidence. Confidence is the belief that you’re able to do what you need to do or what you want to do. God gives us confidence, but we need to know how to access it by faith. God-given confidence is actually the grace of God. We usually hear grace defined as God’s undeserved favor or God doing something for you that you don’t deserve. But it’s really more than that. It was life-changing for me to learn that grace is also God’s power, freely given to me, to enable me to do with ease what I could never do on my own with any amount of struggle or effort. Think about this for a minute. Everyone who accepts Christ as their Savior is taught that we’re saved by grace through faith. Ephesians 2:8 (ESV) says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” But the same way we are saved is the way we are supposed to live. In other words, once we are born again, God wants us to do everything in life by grace through faith. This has been one of the greatest revelations of my life. I remember how exciting it was to realize that God is not just there to help us when we have an emergency. God wants to be involved in every single thing we do on a day-to-day basis. There’s nothing you’re involved in that God doesn’t care about, and He wants you to pray and ask Him to help you with every detail of your life. He doesn’t want you to live striving in your own effort to do anything. God wants to be your close, personal, intimate friend. I was a Christian for years before I learned how to access God’s grace— His power—to live my everyday life. First, I had to get an understanding that once I was saved, God didn’t expect me to live right by my own strength. Just as I couldn’t “earn” salvation through my own works or effort, I also couldn’t really change my heart or behavior in my own strength. Jesus says in John 15:4 (NIV), “No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neith can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” Every day we need to come to God and tell Him, “God, I can do nothing without You. Nothing in my life is going to work without You. Apart from You, there is nothing good in me. My confidence is in You. I need You all the time. I believe You and trust You, Lord.” When we humble ourselves before God and ask Him for help, we can access His grace through faith. To help you do that, I want to share three things that commonly shortcircuit our faith, cutting off our access to God’s power: complaining, self-pity and pride. • Complaining is a negative attitude that keeps us from being thankful for all God has done, what He’s doing, and what He will do. It is a sin we need to repent of, and then be determined to thank God in all things, at all times. His grace and blessings always outweigh the things we think are wrong in our life. • Self-pity is simply a “poor me” attitude. It is a form of idolatry because it causes you to focus on yourself and think, “What about me?” But we can’t be pitiful and powerful at the same time, so let’s decide to give up all self-pity. • Pride takes credit for what God has done and steals His glory. It makes us independent of God, and we can’t bear good fruit apart from hrist. Before I learned how to live my life by God’s grace, I was a mess. I was a nagging wife, manipulative and controlling. And I wasn’t satisfied living like that. Then God helped me by opening my eyes to see that I couldn’t really change until I started taking His Word seriously, trusting Him to change me. When I made a firm decision to pray and study the Word in areas I was weak until the truth made me strong, then God’s grace gave me the power I needed to overcome the things that were wrong. And I keep going forward in my journey with God the same way today. God has all the power you need to do anything you need to do. He loves you and wants to give you His power to live your everyday life with joy. Lean on Him with absolute trust in His wisdom and goodness, and you’ll live with Godgiven confidence!

FWP to Hold CWD Public Information Sessions Across Region 6 Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) is hosting three public information sessions across Region 6 regarding Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and planned surveillance efforts for the upcoming hunting season. Sessions will be held from 6-8 PM. at the following locations: • • •

Last year, FWP discovered CWD in deer south of Billings and north of Chester. This contagious neurological disease can infect deer, elk and moose. It is always fatal, and there is no known cure. Because of the new discovery, transport restrictions are in place for deer harvested in locations where CWD has been detected. FWP will conduct extra surveillance during the general fall hunting season in high-priority areas in parts of northern and western Montana, including Hunting Districts 640, 670, 630, 620, 611, and 600 in Region 6. Check stations for collecting CWD samples from deer and elk will be in operation over the weekends in both Havre and the Malta area, with shifts also occurring between the Scobey and Glasgow areas. Check station locations are subject to change, depending upon sampling priority, and locations will be updated weekly on the Region 6 Facebook page. All hunters must stop at all check stations, but submission of CWD samples is voluntary. Deer heads may also be submitted at the FWP Region 6 Headquarters in Glasgow and at the Havre Field Office. Hunters are encouraged to join FWP biologists and others at the information sessions to ask questions and to learn ways to help FWP with CWD surveillance this fall. During Hurricane Sandy, a Fox News broadcaster nearly got pantsed on national television. Because he was beltless and wearing khakis, the whipping wind ripped the reporter’s waistband open, unzipped his fly and began tearing down his trousers. Had he not assumed a defensive stance and snatched his pants with his free hand his dignity and khakis were about to be gone with wind. Back in those days, weather was broadcast as it really was, but not anymore. During Hurricane Florence, CNN’s Anderson Cooper wished to exaggerate the depth of flood waters, so he donned chest waders and broadcast from the barrow pit. With the waves lapping above his belly button, viewers were given the impression flood waters were deeper than they were. His camera crew filmed standing in one foot of water in the street and the photos revealing this con quickly went viral. Next up was the Weather Channel. In Wilmington, North Carolina, a raincoat clad reporter stepped in front of the camera and struggled to keep his feet as the gusty winds of Florence rocked him back and forth. It would have been an easy sale were it not for the two pedestrians casually strolling in the background. Perhaps it was only windy on one side of the street. Deceit is despicable, but on the bright side, it does stimulate creativity and soon social media was flooded with hilarious, weather-reporter spoofs. My favorite was a make-believe, raincoated reporter getting drenched as the wind propelled broken tree limbs, a white plastic lawn chair and then a car bumper past is backside. For the grand finale, a lone office chair on casters wheels across the background and I laugh every time I see it. The camera pans back and reveals the ground crew holding a garden hose, leaf blower and a pile of other personal effects patiently waiting their turn to be storm debris. This brings me to my point. If the progressive media is bold enough to deceive the unwashed with pretend weather easily disproven by stepping outdoors, how far will they go to scam viewers when the truth is easy to conceal? Think about it. Claiming 97 percent of scientists agree man’s activities are changing the climate is a falsehood advancing a complicated con far beyond exaggerating wind and water levels. Fake weather has joined fake science and fake news as the foundation underlying the left’s fake socialist utopia. This November, all progressives, Democrats and Democratic Socialists, must be defeated at every level of government.
