Eryn Bent to Perform at Triple Dog Brewing on June 8
Montana-born singer/songstress, Eryn Bent will perform at the Triple Dog Brewing Company in Havre on Friday, June 8 at 5:00 PM where there is never a cover charge for musicians. Born and raised in Lewistown, Bent has deep, Western roots that shine through her Americana, folk-style songwriting. She has played in several West Coast venues where she has been described as having “powerhouse vocals and honest, gritty songwriting.” Currently living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Bent has been entertaining audiences since she was fourteen years old. She is a trained vocalist with years of private training, which have given her incredible range and ability to showcase her vocals in many evocative ways. Bent has independently recorded, written, and released three amateur albums, with the first privately released in 2005. Most notably, she completed her first studio album in May 2014, Firefly, recorded by Jono Manson at the Kitchen Sink Studios. Featuring eleven originals songs and produced by Bent herself, Firefly is a 2015 New Mexico Music Award Winner, with four nominations, including "Best of the Year." The album is currently being played and distributed internationally. Bent, who proclaims interests in performing, writing songs and poetry, and embracing life, plays full-time—both solo and with her band around New Mexico. She tours nationally promoting Firefly, In the Gray (a live solo album), and her upcoming 2017 band album. Bent’s stop at the Triple Dog Brewing Company on 675 First Street West in Havre will follow her performance on June 2 at Philipsburg Brewing Company in Philipsburg, Montana.

CEO means Chief Executive Officer. A CFO is the Chief Financial Officer, the COO is the Chief Operating Officer and the HRD is the Human Resources Director. We are familiar with most of these terms, even if some of us aren’t always clear on the distinction between one and the other. What about a CSO, a Chief Sustainability Officer? Name the company: DuPont, Georgia Pacific, COKE, if it is among the 100 largest companies in the world, it probably has a Sustainability Officer, and if it doesn’t have one, it will soon. Many MBA programs now include sustainability training That should come as no surprise. The cost of using energy and water continues to increase. The public’s tolerance of spending public money to clean up messes created by private companies while those companies pocket record profits, has eroded. That has created a demand for people who can help reduce a company’s carbon foot print and take advantage of opportunities in the “new” green economy. Creating a separate CSO position in these companies makes sense, 1 of 2 but it belies a growing truth. That good business is green business. No one should know that better than ranchers. If we erode or impoverish the soil, production will drop unless we replace the lost fertility with chemicals. Either way it affects profitability. It isn’t just a direct relationship between ecosystem health and economic health, it is the same relationship. As I wrote in an earlier ProfitTips, we ought not be talking about economics and ecology as separate topics but eco-nomics or econology. I like the way Joel Salatin puts it. He says, If our farms aren’t fun, aren’t profitable and are too much work, our children won’t want them… romancing the next generation is the ultimate test of sustainability. With that in mind, the CSO has to ensure that the business is profitable and financially solvent (the role of the CFO). They need to see to it that people are treated fairly and are effective in their roles (the job of the HRD). They need to make sure that the business is productive and profitable and that resources and infrastructure are maintained so that production and profit can be sustained indefinitely (the role of the COO). It looks to me like the CSO is the CEO of the 21st century.

On May 29, the Tuesday after Memorial Day, Izaak Opatz will be playing his brand of folk rock for patrons at Triple Dog Brewing Company in Havre at 5:00 PM. Born in Whitefi sh, Montana, but currently living in Los Angeles, California, Opatz recently signed a recording deal with Mama Bird records. His debut album Mariachi Static originally released in 2017, but it was re-released on vinyl this past April, and a CD re-release will be available July 20 from Mama Bird Recording Company, an independent record label based in Portland, Oregon. Opatz started playing and writing songs with a friend for fun in high school, learning simple bluegrass chords and runs on guitar. He claims that he can still hear “the boom-chick” rhythm in the way he writes and plays. After high school, Opatz went to Missoula to study English, but graduated instead with a double major in creative writing and forestry from the University of Montana. While in Missoula, Opatz collaborated with Havreite Dave Martens on steel guitar, Matt Tipton on drums, Ryan Scott on bass, and Ray Lombardi on guitar to form the country band the Best Westerns. They released their debut album, High Country in 2011. The 10-track record features all original songs by lead singer and guitarist Izaak Opatz. The album’s website describes the band as “creating honest and evocative music in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.” Although country might be the genre label on their album, Martens and Opatz both have a hard time describing their sound. Opatz has called it everything from alt-country to country rock to electric folk. While in Montana, Opatz worked in Glacier National Park's backcountry clearing trails and repairing bridges and retaining walls for ten years, taking inspiration for his tunes—lovelorn songs with evenly paced melodies and surprising twists. He recorded Mariachi as a solo album in part because he was in L.A. at the time and partly because he wanted something to promote himself.

Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR KAITLIN, The time for a little fun is after you’ve completed the first three Baby Steps. Baby Step 1 is saving $1,000 for a beginner emergency fund. Baby Step 2 is paying off all debt, except for your home. And Baby Step 3 means you go back and add to your emergency fund until you have three to six months of expenses set aside. Once you’re debt-free except for your home — and you have your emergency fund completed — you’ve laid a solid, financial foundation for your life. That’s when you can have a little fun and spend some money on a vacation, new furniture, or something like that. Children think about their immediate wants and do what feels good. Adults, on the other hand, devise smart, logical plans, and stick to them. I want you to have a great life, but you have to put in some hard work and say “no” to yourself sometimes in order to attain that great life! ~ Dave DEAR DAVE, I’ll be receiving my income tax refund soon. It will be enough to completely pay off my two smallest debts, or get my starter emergency fund of $1,000 for Baby Step 1 in place. What should I do? ~ Brandy DEAR BRANDY, I love that you’re excited about using your refund to start the Baby Steps, and begin gaining control of your finances. But we call the beginner’s emergency fund Baby Step 1 for a reason. Bad things can happen while you’re working to get out of debt. That’s why I want people to get a little money set aside before they start Baby Step 2, which is the debt snowball. What if the alternator on your car goes out, or your refrigerator dies? Life happens, and things go wrong. When this kind of stuff pops up, and you don’t have any money set aside, you’re likely to quit the plan and wind up going even deeper into debt. I know you want to get out of debt. I want you to get out of debt, too. But I want you to stick with the plan, and actually get out of debt, instead of falling off the wagon the first time you hit a bump in the road! ~Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. Summer Theater Camps Available to Area Youth Every summer, the Montana Actors’ Theatre (MAT), located in Havre, offers four college students currently enrolled in college or university programs, preferably theatre or music, the opportunity to become paid interns. Applications for this opportunity were due April 30, 2018, and although candidates have been selected, no names will be released until all interns have accepted the available positions. The interns hired will oversee two established MAT youth programs: the touring KidsMAT Summer Children’s Theatre camp for grades 1-6 and the annual MAT Youth Production for grades 6-12, which this summer will be Bugsy Malone. KidsMAT Children’s Theatre Camps are week-long acting camps in Havre and surrounding communities. Each camp runs Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM with a public performance on each Thursday in the evening. For some of the camps outside of Havre, residence in the community will be required of the interns, arranged for and provided by MAT, while others will be travelled to daily. Under the guidance of MAT Artistic Director Jay Pyette, the first KidsMAT camp begins in Havre June 11-14 and the second will take place June 16-19, and a third on August 6-9. Another theater camp will be held in Chinook on June 18-21. Cost for the camps is $50 for the first child of a family, and $30 for each child after that. Registration forms are available on the MAT website (www.mtactors. com) or in Chinook at the Chamber Office, Liquor Store, and Chinook Pharmacy. On June 15 at 7:00 PM and again on June 16 at 2:00 PM at the Montana Actors’ Theatre, auditions will be held for the full MAT Youth Production of Bugsy Malone. This pint-sized, pin-striped classic is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920s. Directed by MAT’s 2018 Summer Youth interns and produced by Tracey and Joe Jette, the show will feature the immense young talent in local communities. According to Pyette, children and young adults will fill all sixteen of the available roles, with the possibility of additional minor roles. Then, evening rehearsals will take place until the show’s opening at 7:00 PM on July 26 at the Montana State University-Northern (MSU-N) Theater on MSU-N’s campus at Cowan Drive. Thursday’s show will be sponsored by Western Drug Pharmacy. The show will run for six performances from 7:00-9:00 each night: • Friday, July 27, 2018 (SPONSORED BY Havre Ford) • Saturday, July 28, 2018 (SPONSORED BY Flynn Realty Inc.) • Thursday, August 2, 2018 (SPONSORED BY Jerry & Penney Bergren) • Friday, August 3, 2018 (SPONSORED BY First Bank of Montana) • Saturday, August 4, 2018 (Sponsorship Available) Tickets for the show—which will cost adults, $15; students, senior citizens, and military, $10; and children K-8, $5—are available locally at Fivehead's, Computer Center, and Bear Paw Meats Store in Havre or by clicking the "Get Tickets" link at http://mtactors.com/.

Young and Poor Well, it's not a midlife crisis, but here's how things worked out for me. Married 39 years, took a look at my wife one day and said, "Honey, 39 years ago, we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10 inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 19 year old brunette. Now, we have a nice house, nice car, big bed and plasma screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 58 year old woman. It seems to me that you are not holding up your side of things." My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and fi nd a hot 25 year old blond, and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, sleeping on a sofa bed....

Wheat markets were sharply higher, led by Chicago on fears of developing dryness in the key growing regions of the Black Sea. Ongoing dryness in the US southern plains is wreaking havoc on hard red winter wheat as it moves through the heading stage. The recent crop tour estimated Kansas production at just 243 million bushels, the lowest since 1989. Corn and soybeans also moved higher, with corn getting strong support from developing dryness in southern Brazil where the second season corn crop is moving into the important pollination stage. Corn is also finding spillover support from wheat along with the potential dryness that appears to be evolving in Ukraine, who has become the world’s third largest exporter of corn. Soybeans are tagging along with corn but struggling to hold gains as the trade spat with China appears to be getting more entrenched. The cattle markets were quietly lower even though cash markets have remained well supported. The market is bracing for huge beef production over the next few months and struggling to maintain upward momentum. Demand for grass calves has been muted this spring due to the intense drought in the southern plains. Energy markets were slightly higher, continuing to be well supported amid the Middle East unrest and improving prospects for US exports. Precious metals were under pressure as the US dollar soared higher and inflation threats appeared to be minimal. The Dollar found strong buying as interest rates bumped above the benchmark 3.0%, prompting more shifting of money into treasuries and out of stocks. The Dow was slightly lower in very choppy action, nearing the major lows of the Feb/April double bottom.

Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer
Make Every Day a Celebration How often do you celebrate events or achievements in your life? Is celebration something you only think about during holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, or other signifi cant times of life? I don’t think we celebrate enough, but I’ve discovered how to live with an attitude of celebration. Our attitude is our thought life turned inside-out. It’s IN us, but everybody sees it – in our body language, facial expressions, and other ways we communicate. You don’t have to open your mouth for everybody to know when you’re impatient, frustrated or disgusted by something. Attitude is the posture we take toward life. It’s all about the way we decide to look at our circumstances. The attitudes we choose affect how we feel, behave, and ultimately, the overall quality of our lives. It’s easy to think, “I’m like this because I have all these problems!” But the truth is your attitude is yours, and nobody can make you have a bad one if you don’t want to. Giving in to a negative, critical, or angry mindset doesn’t solve your problems or make anything better. And no one enjoys being around a person with a bad attitude for very long. Some people are blessed with a naturally positive view of life, but I had to work at it. I grew up in a very negative home, and my natural temperament leaned toward being critical, always seeing what was wrong with things. But I know from personal experience that anyone can learn how to have a good attitude if they are willing to let the Holy Spirit work in their heart. Ephesians 4:23 (AMP) says, “Be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh, untarnished mental and spiritual attitude].” Notice this says to be “continually renewed in the spirit of your mind.” It’s a daily decision we have to make. I have found that a lot of life is all about making little adjustments on a frequent basis. For example, when my life gets out of balance because I’m working too much, I have to make an adjustment with my schedule so I have time to rest, spend time with family or friends, or do something fun. Sometimes people can get lazy and just need to get up and start moving. Or maybe they don’t feel good and need to start drinking more water to stay hydrated. These decisions are all about making little adjustments that make a big difference. When it comes to living with an attitude of celebration, we have to decide to be mindful of the little things, as well as the big things, that we can be thankful for. I have many things I can celebrate at this point in my life… • I’ve been married to the same man for more than 50 years, and I still love him! • We have four grown children who are serving God. • We have 11 grandchildren who love Jesus. • I’ve been teaching God’s Word for more than 42 years. • I’ve written 116 books and I’m still writing. • But most importantly, I’m celebrating how much God has changed me! In the Old Testament, we fi nd that God commanded the Israelites to have seven feasts every year to remember what He had done for them and celebrate His faithfulness and goodness to them. The Passover feast was an eight-day celebration when they remembered how God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt so they could inherit the Promised Land He had for them. As believers in Christ, this represents what God has done for us spiritually. He’s forgiven us of sin, given us a new heart, and His Spirit lives in us. Because of what Christ has done, we have access to the presence of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to become everything we are created to be. We also have the privilege of prayer, and the confi dence that God listens, He cares, and He will answer us. He is always with us and will never leave us alone. These are just a few amazing promises we fi nd in His Word that should celebrate every day! To celebrate means you mark an important event in your life. Celebrating can range from having a huge party to simply taking a few minutes to tell God how thankful you are for what He’s done for you. You could even do something for someone else. When we really appreciate what God has done in our lives, we want to help others who don’t have what we have. And the more you help people, the happier you will be. I want to encourage you to make a conscious decision to spend time every day considering what God has done for you – spiritually, as well as in the circumstances of your life. The more you renew your mind to focus on Him and who He is to you, the more you’ll have to celebrate. And you’ll live with an attitude of celebration!

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58
Life Will Never be the Same My mother was born a city kid in Hysham, Montana. She moved to Sheridan, Wyoming where she met and later married her high school sweetheart, the proverbial rich rancher from nearby Parkman. They spent a few years in California while my father completed his obligations to the United States Navy and upon his discharge an eastern Montana ranch became their new home. Moving from city life to the alkali flats of Blacktail Creek meant Mom’s life would never be the same. Despite droughting out twice in their ten-year, tenure, the fertile plains of Rosebud County did produce me and my two brothers. A city kid becoming a country kid is a small adaptation compared to the adjustment from wife to mother, especially when household water had to be hauled from a distant stock reservoir. Motherhood meant Mom’s life would never be the same. In 1965, we sold the Ingomar ranch and moved to the family homestead in the foothills of Wyoming’s Big Horns where Dad recruited me and my brothers to trail cattle to and from our mountain grazing permits. Years before, a doctor told Mother her bad back meant she could never ride horses, so she stayed home in the valley for our first two summers. She missed out and hated that. I vividly rememBlaine County Library Wins ber the July morning at our Lake Creek Cow Camp when we saddled a horse for Mom and she joined us for a five-hour circle through the high country. committee provides a checklist based on these standards so that libraries can self-assess their ability to meet the needs of patrons in nine categories called recommendations: Board Accomplishments, Planning and Evaluation, Finance/ Fiscal Management, Human Resources (Library Director), Human Resources (Volunteers and Staff), Collection Development, Facilities, Public Relations/ Community Outreach, and Services/Information Access. “The Montana State Library Commission is pleased to recognize Montana’s excellent libraries with the Excellent Library Service Award,” said Newell. “Providing excellent library services in Montana is not an easy or insignificant thing. Our wide-open spaces, and too often, our steep fiscal challenges, make it difficult for libraries to provide Montanans with the resources, services, and technologies they need. Libraries receiving an ELSA have met or surmounted these challenges. The Commission congratulates ELSA-winning libraries’ trustees, library staff, and communities for their achievement and commitment to excellence.” According to their website, through its statewide programs, “the MSL empowers Montanans; enhances learning in families and communities; builds 21st Century skills; and provides opportunities for civic participation.” Those seeking more information are encouraged to visit http://msl.mt.gov. Each year, academic, public, school, and special libraries have the opportunity to apply for the award by completing an online checklist, indicating all of the recommendations the library has achieved. The ELSA checklist is available beginning in January and due in March. If a library meets the required number of recommendations, the library will be honored with an ELSA and receive a certificate from the Commission at the MLA awards luncheon. “Much like public education, libraries are required to meet standards, and for meeting those standards, we earn an ELSA,” Blaine County library director Valerie Frank said. “We have been getting the ELSA Award since its inception in 2013. Prior to that, it was called the Honor Roll, and we were on that as far back as I can remember. The Montana State Library did add several categories when they started ELSA, however,” Frank added. Montana’s Public Library Standards are defined in the Administrative Rules of Montana. They provide benchmarks for library services, collection development, planning and evaluation, finance and facilities. The standards include three benchmark levels: Essential, Enhanced, and Excellent. The MSL provides consulting and other support to assist public library directors, trustees and the communities they serve in striving to meet the standards. Each public library must meet the Essential standards in order to receive State Aid. The Enhanced and Excellent levels of the standards are designed to encourage libraries to continually improve services to their communities. In his award letter to the Blaine County Library, Newell wrote: “Thank you for the support you give your local library.
