USDA Report Highlights Benefits of Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for Farmers U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today highlighted a new report showing the positive impacts of President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) on American farms. Six months after the President signed the tax cuts and reforms into law, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS) has released a report, titled “Estimated Effects of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on Farms and Farm Households.” The report examines in detail how the historic tax cuts and reforms will alleviate the tax burden on American farms to help them grow and prosper. According to the report, average tax rates are expected to decline across all farm sizes and commodity specializations and fewer farm estates will be subject to the Death Tax. “Most family farms are run as small businesses, and they should be able to keep more of what they earn to reinvest in their operations and take care of their families,” Perdue said. “Simplifying the tax code and easing the burden on farmers will free them up to make choices for themselves, create jobs, and boost the overall American economy. This report just shows what we knew all along: the tax cuts and reforms will benefit farmers.” The TCJA significantly reformed the Federal income tax system, including individual and business income tax rates, business expenses, taxable income deductions, and the alternative minimum tax. The TCJA also doubled the Federal estate tax exclusion. The USDA ERS report estimates the impact of current Federal income tax provisions on farm households by using 2016 tax-year data. Whether we realize it or not, most of us choose the second option - we subsidize our businesses. I'm not talking about government subsidies but rather the ways in which we subsidize ourselves. Living off inherited wealth and appreciating land values, relying on off-farm income to make ends meet and working for less than it would cost to replace yourself are all ways we subsidize our ranches. I assume most ranchers would rather not have to subsidize their ranches and would prefer to make profit. Businesses have only three ways to increase profit. At Ranch Management Consultants we call them the three secrets. They are: * Reduce overhead costs. * Improve gross margin per unit. * Increase turnover. Reduce overhead costs - Overhead costs are those costs that don't change much as livestock numbers change. Land and labor costs are two types of overheads. Any costs related to land (i.e., fencing or water trough repairs, property taxes, leases, etc.) are overheads. Likewise, any costs related to labor (i.e., salaries and benefits, vehicles and equipment costs, etc.) are labor overheads. Economists sometimes call these fixed costs. But, they are not fixed; they can be changed, and that is one of the three secrets for increasing profit. Improve gross margin per unit - Gross margin is a measure of the economic efficiency of your livestock. It's calculated by subtracting the direct costs of production from gross product. Direct costs are those costs that increase or decrease as cow numbers increase or decrease. Direct costs include feed, health, freight, marketing commissions and interest on livestock loans. Gross product refers to the gross value of production. This includes livestock sales minus purchases. It also includes changes in the value of your herd. Total gross margin is divided by the number of animals in the herd to calculate gross margin per unit. Increasing gross margin per unit (the efficiency of production) is another way to increase profit. Increase turnover - In ranching, "turnover" is the number of animal units carried. If gross margin is positive, increasing turnover will increase profit if it doesn't increase land or labor costs or damage the resource base. Nevertheless, increasing the number of units is pointless if each unit makes a negative contribution toward overhead costs. As an industry we historically have tried to increase profit by increasing production (increasing gross product). We have done an amazing job increasing conception rates and weaning rates. In fact, I'm told the average beef cow in Alberta produces 20% more pounds of beef/year than she did just 20 years ago. So why aren't we 20% more profitable? Part of the answer is obvious: the increased production resulted from, among other things, increasing direct costs (i.e., feed, health products, etc.). But there is more to the story. Those direct costs had to be administered by someone (increasing labor overheads) somewhere (increasing land overheads). On most ranches today, overheads account for 60-80% of total costs. It is the cost of building and maintaining the infrastructure we created to increase our efficiency that has depressed profit. Imagine a chain with three economic links: overheads, gross margin per unit and turnover. If the gross margin link is weak, strengthening the overhead and turnover links won't make the chain stronger. In fact, they may make the chain weaker by putting more stress on the weak link. In the next article, we'll discuss how to find the weak link for your business. It's critical if you want to be ranching for profit.

Welcome to Glasgow Signs The Welcome to Glasgow signs on the east and west end of Highway 2 in Glasgow, Montana, are now complete. The birth of the Entrance Sign Project came from a vison that a group of community members had following a community assessment workshop. This group enlisted the help of Thompson and Sons to assist with the finding of worthy rocks for the signage. Tom and his family donated all of their time, the equipment, and the rocks to the project. Additional funding was received from the Theo and Alyce Beck Foundation Grant and the Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID). The mission of the TBID is to generate room nights for lodging facilities in the City of Glasgow by effectively marketing the region as a preferred travel destination. For every hotel/motel room rented in Glasgow, $1 goes into this fund. These monies, then, are used to help fund events and bring tournaments to the area. The new design was constructed by Db designs (Dustin and Brianne Brunelle) of Opheim, Montana. Assisting with the installation were Kyle and Cassie Shipp, Cole and Emily Redfield, and Kheyerah Bilger. The Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, the City of Glasgow, and Two Rivers Economic Growth also assisted with this project.

DAVE SAYS:
Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.
DEAR DAVE, I’m retired, and in the past few years I’ve taken up painting. This hobby has begun bringing in more money than I expected. I was wondering at what point I should start thinking about separating my art money from my personal finances, and look at officially starting a little business. ~Pat

Price $12,500 exc condition located Great Falls. 7-I
DEAR PAT, I’d do it now. A hobby that makes money is called a business. Hearing this is scary to some people, but starting a small business doesn’t have to be complicated. You can go to your bank, and using your Social Security number, open a sole proprietor checking account. Title the account with your full name, then DBA — doing business as — and the name of your business. All your art income goes into that account, and any expenses paid where your painting is concerned comes out of that account. After the income goes in, and the expenses come out, what’s left is profit. That’s what you’ll end up paying taxes on. Also, you’ll be required to do quarterly estimates and send them to the IRS if you make more than $640 in a quarter. Always remember to always hold back 25 percent for taxes, too, in a separate savings account just for this purpose. Omni-Flex This is really cool, Pat. I think you’re on the verge of being very successful!.
For Sale: Kavaic floor cleaning system, $600 obo. Commercial floor cleaning system, ~ Dave comes with wet/dry vac, 30 ft hose, Trolly cart, scrub and bristle attachment for scrubbing tile and DEAR DAVE, I’ve been following your teachings for a while, and I’ve noticed you advise people to get grout. Used about 8 times since things in writing when dealing with creditors. Usually, it seems like you’re talking about credit cards purchased. Call 945-3066. 7-I and things like that when this is mentioned. I finally made my last student loan payment the other day. Do you think it would be a good idea to request a formal statement saying my student loan debt has been completely paid off? ~Andrea
DEAR ANDREA, Following up on paid-off debts is always a good idea. It wouldn’t hurt to write, and request formal, written confirmation that everything is paid in full. You can do this through email, so you’ll have a record of contact, or you can send a certified letter — return receipt requested — through the postal system. That way, you’ll have a record they received the letter and signed for it. It sounds like you spent a lot of time paying off your student loans. After an experience like that, you don’t want to have to deal with greedy or dishonest collectors hounding you years down the road, and no way to prove you’re free and clear. Congratulations on finally kicking your student loan debt to the curb, Andrea! It feels awesome, doesn’t it? ~Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. On July 9, twenty-three JUMP youth group members, ranging from seventh grade to adult chaperones, will depart for Green Bay, Wisconsin, on a mission trip to work with and for people experiencing difficult circumstances. JUMP, which stands for Jesus Uses Motivated People, is a faith based nondenominational youth group that designs mission trips to allow youth members the opportunity to follow biblical teachings in mission work through hands-on service. In previous mission trips, these altruistic individuals have worked largely with homeless and women and children's shelters as well as for the disabled and/or disadvantaged. Although they also perform monthly service projects in Chinook, the traveling team presents a broader view of the needs of the country. Group members also build strong leadership and responsibility skills through these trips. Every year since 2009, JUMP has been travelling on summer mission trips. According to one of JUMP’s leaders, Chrissy Downs, travel funds are obtained in various ways. Each member is responsible for a small amount of the cost individually, although the group does have scholarships available for those unable to provide this seed money. The remainder of the funds come through fundraising activities, the biggest of which is Holiday Pie Sales. “We make and deliver between 250 and 300 pies each year,” Downs said. “We also hold an Ultimate Salad Bar at Wallner Hall, where we offer an expanded salad and dessert bar, which features a huge assortment of homemade salads and desserts. It is an all-you-can-eat event, and we just take free will donations. Our other main fundraising is through working concessions at Chinook High School’s sporting events. We also have a very supportive community that is generous with donations,” Downs reported. In addition to Downs, other active leaders include Janelle Downs, Moses Deanon, Dalton and Jordan Heilig, Bridgette Brennan, Carla Anderson, Bryan Danley, and Kasie McIntosh. This year’s mission team leaders are Janelle, Moses, Dalton, Jordan, Carla, and Chrissy. Although this mission trip is not an exchange program, the Green Bay church contacted the Chinook-based team through an affiliate of the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program about visiting the community. YAV is a program through the Presbyterian Church. Since Chinook leaders had not yet chosen a site, they decided to partner with the Green Bay group, who will arrive in town to do local work on June 13, 2018. In collaboration with the Green Bay crew, local youth will not only hold a Vacation Bible school but also hope to execute three projects, with the main one being to paint the VFW Hall, which houses the Food Pantry. If time permits, the youth additionally will refurbish the VFW food booth at the fairgrounds and travel to the Bears Paw Mountains to maintain the grounds of one of the rural cemeteries. Downs explained that in the past, JUMP has worked through various organizations that arrange service trips for youth groups. However, during recent years, JUMP has begun planning and carrying out their own trips, eliminating much of the cost. The group organizes a week-long trip—complete with all activities, work sites, meals, devotional time, and recreation opportunities—planned in advance to ensure smooth operations once they arrive. On their trips, housing is arranged through churches that host the volunteers by providing a place to cook in their building and room to sleep—which is typically floor space. The visiting group will then make a donation to the church as a gesture of gratitude. Sometimes, they exchange nights at a summer bible camp for work on those camp areas. Local monthly service projects vary for JUMP members. Frequently, they simply support individuals or organizations by performing such services as assisting community members who are moving. If that situation arises, volunteers load furniture and boxes. Or they might complete yard work for persons unable to do so on their own. Other times, they conduct activities with or for the residents at the Grand Villa or the Sweet Memorial Nursing Home. “We have assisted local 4-H youth leaders with a carnival, done drive by leaf raking for people, provided childcare, and been servers, cooks, and cleaners for meals. We participate in at least one food drive a year for the food pantry, a Vacation Bible School in the summer, and annual assistance with the Community Chest Drive. In addition, we have assembled care packages to be given at the food pantry, and in December we shop for angel tree gifts and go Christmas caroling at the Villa and the nursing home,” Downs explained.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58
Independence Day During America’s Second Civil War It is true, the 2016 presidential election was altered by forces colluding to impose their will over the electorate. However, rather than Russians the colluders were Americans, but their plan backfired when the great unwashed chose Donald Trump over the ruling class candidate. This was not the first time colluders plotted to steer our republic away from the limited government principles which made America great. Here is the collusion the media ignores. In 2008, patriots feared President Obama might imprison our nation with the socialist programs upon which he campaigned. He did. Ordinary Americans rose to the challenge and became constitutional advocates. Unlike today’s violent Antifa protests, their Tea Party rallies were punctuated with prayer, patriotic music and motivational speakers heralding the wisdom of America’s founders. Previously politically complacent men and women created neighborhood patriot organizations and as the liberty movement grew, they encountered resistance from the Internal Revenue Service. Tax exempt status and frivolous audits were granted, delayed or imposed based upon an organization’s political beliefs. Ironically, the IRS, funded by taxpayers, colluded to silence taxpayers. After 242 years, a War for Independence, the Civil War, two World Wars and numerous other military conflicts, our great republic now finds itself trapped in its second Civil war. In this conflict, the mainstream media, academia, Democrats, GOP Never-Trumpers, Hollywood elitists, climate changers and the perpetually indoctrinated are viciously attacking the one person standing between them and their proposed socialist utopia—President Donald Trump. Mister Trump was not my presidential candidate of choice, but his courage under fire has convinced me at this time, he is the man for the job. The attacks on his character are relentless and ridiculous. From the Russian collusion illusion to the charges President Trump’s policies are ripping children from the arms of arrested illegal immigrants it is obvious the first casualty in America’s second Civil War is the truth. The ruling class will do or say anything to resist President Trump’s attempts to repair the damage done to our republic by his predecessor. Previously, I have suggested patriots read our Declaration of Independence aloud at Fourth of July celebrations, but we should do more. Because our president is under unmerciful attack by truly evil forces, Independence Day is the perfect time to pray for him, his family, his administration and American liberty.

Throughout the years I’ve been teaching God’s Word, people have asked me, “Joyce, how do you live the Christian life?” My answer surprises a lot of people. I tell them, “You can’t live the Christian life, but God can live it through you!” One of the greatest lessons I have ever learned is that we can’t change ourselves—it is only by God’s grace that we can overcome our weaknesses and become more like Him. In John 15:5, Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (ESV). When we try to do things apart from God’s grace and strength, we will just struggle. One of the best prayers we can pray is, “God, help me!” Years ago, when I first started reading the Bible and getting serious about my relationship with God, I began seeing all of the things I needed to change—there were so many! I needed to clean up my mind and my mouth; I had to overcome being so negative and judgmental; and my behavior toward my husband, Dave, also needed to improve. I immediately went to work trying to do it myself, but I just ended up very frustrated and made little progress because I was spending all of my own energy trying to something only God can do. It was so wonderful when I finally got this revelation: God doesn’t expect me to do it alone. As John 15:5 says, I needed to abide in Christ. When we abide in Him, we study God’s Word, especially in the areas where we have weaknesses, and spend as much time with the Lord as we can—whether it’s talking to Him in prayer or even just sitting quietly in His presence. As we diligently and humbly seek the Lord and receive His grace, the Bible says we will change into His image “from glory to glory” (see 2 Corinthians 3:18). The apostle Paul, who wrote a large part of the New Testament and is widely regarded as a great leader of the early Church, realized he could do nothing without God’s help. In Romans 7:15, 18 (ESV) he says, “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.” Have you ever wanted to do the right thing but still struggled and couldn’t make it happen regardless of how hard you tried? Paul was going through the very same thing, but he provides us with the answer in verses 24 and 25:“…Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!…” Paul is saying we can’t do it on our own, but God will do it for us if we let Him. This same principle applies to our relationships with other people—we can’t change them, but God can. When my children were young, I was certain that a couple of them would never make it on their own. My daughter Laura was extremely messy, unorganized and seemingly couldn’t keep track of anything. My youngest son, Daniel, struggled his way through school, and I was convinced I would be taking care of him the rest of my life. I spent so much time worrying and trying to change them on my own. Most of the time my efforts only seemed to make things worse! Yes, I needed to be a good mother and help them in every way I could. But instead of worrying, struggling, and making us all miserable, I could have been praying, trusting God, and choosing to believe everything would work out well in the end. Today, my daughter Laura is so organized that one of her jobs is to help keep my life organized! And Daniel? The boy who barely made it through school is now the CEO of Joyce Meyer Ministries, and he does a fantastic job! Now I look back and realize how much time and effort I wasted worrying and struggling when God had things under control all along! You see, whether it’s ourselves or someone else, the Lord wants us to seek His help, then rest in the knowledge that He is on the case. God doesn’t want us to struggle; He wants us to believe. He wants us to relax and enjoy our lives even while we’re waiting for change. What are you struggling with today? Your behavior, your finances, your kids, or maybe other people? Here’s the best advice I can give you: Run to God for help, receive His grace, then make a firm decision to relax and enjoy your life while you trust Him to change things. As you do, you will find freedom from struggling and have God’s peace and joy in the process.

Grain markets took another hit this past week as the trade rifts with major partners deepened. Wheat led the way down as harvest pressure added to the bearish sentiment. Good rains across the Midwest are getting the row crops off to an excellent start. The cattle complex was lower as cash values slipped over the last two weeks. Feeders found additional pressure from a bearish cattle-on-feed report that showed placements during May much higher than expected. It’s Never too Late to Quit Tobacco Use By: Jana McPherson-Hauer The average adult takes 15 to 20 breaths a minute — more than 20,000 per day, according to the American Lung Association. Healthy lungs are important to deliver clean air to our bodies’ organs and tissues, which convert oxygen into fuel to support vital body functions. When a smoker lights up, it affects not only the health of the lungs, but also the body structures that depend on the lungs for oxygen. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death, claiming the lives of more than 440,000 adults in America each year, along with an estimated 50,000 deaths from secondhand smoke exposure. Closer to home, smoking has a significant financial impact on Montanans. According to Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, annual health care costs in Montana directly caused by smoking total $440 million. Medicaid costs caused by smoking total $81.1 million. Statewide, smoking-caused productivity losses total $368.9 million. These do not include health costs caused by exposure to secondhand smoke, smoking-caused fires, smokeless tobacco use, or cigar and pipe smoking. In addition to lung cancer, smoking can lead to a variety of respiratory complications and chronic diseases including asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, coronary heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, peripheral artery disease and cancer of the mouth and throat, bladder, stomach, cervix, kidneys and pancreas. A smoker’s lifespan is about 14 years shorter than a nonsmoker’s. Smokers also suffer from other conditions, including slow-healing wounds, infertility and peptic ulcer disease. More than 8 million people in the United States have at least one serious illness caused by smoking. In addition to lowering your risk of cancer, emphysema, stroke and heart attack, quitting also decreases your likelihood of cataracts and premature skin wrinkling. Other benefits include more energy, better sleep, improved sense of smell and taste, and healthier skin. Lung function begins to improve. •One to nine months after quitting: Coughing and shortness of breath decrease. •One year after quitting: Added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker’s. •Five years after quitting: Stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker. •10 years after quitting: Lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker’s. Risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decreases. •15 years after quitting: Risk of coronary heart disease is back to that of a nonsmoker’s.
