A Great Place To Raise A Family

I occasionally lead workshops I call Hard Work and Harmony: Effective Relationships In Family Businesses. In it I like to ask participants to explain to the person next to them, why they ranch. Some say they love being their own boss, or love working outdoors and with livestock. Almost all of them say something about loving the lifestyle. Near the top of most people’s lists is, “It’s a great place to raise a family.” I agree. I grew up on a small place. The biology lessons I learned from tending livestock were more influential than any I ever had in a classroom. I learned other lessons too. I learned how to work hard and how to be resourceful. But it wasn’t just about work. Our place was a great setting for any adventure my imagination could conjure up. My mom sold it when I was in college and it just about broke my heart. A ranch can be a great place to raise a family, but it isn’t always. I worked with a rancher shortly after my son, Jack, was born. When we broke for lunch he asked about my new baby. I told him that when they placed Jack in Kathy’s arms for the first time, I could hardly see him for the tears of joy streaming down my face. Tears welled up in his eyes too, but they weren’t tears of joy. Trying to hold back a flood of emotion, he told me how he had worked sun up to sun down to build a place “for the generations to come.” He said that he hadn’t been as involved in his children’s lives as he should have been. As we sat on the hill, he told me that now he rarely hears from his adult children, who want no part of the ranch. A ranch can be a great place to raise a family, but it is not a substitute for our active involvement in family life. Many ranchers are addicted to work. I’ll bet you’ve even heard some of your colleagues brag about how long and hard they work, proudly proclaiming things like, “I haven’t taken a vacation in 20 years.” They say it as though it is something to be proud of. When I hear things like that I shake my head wondering, “Are things that bad?” You can’t run a sustainable business on unsustainable effort. Intentional or not, work can become an excuse to avoid working through the issues every healthy family faces at one point or another. When work consistently takes precedence over family needs, we set ourselves and our families up for trouble. Engaging in what may be uncomfortable conversations when issues first come up can keep them from growing into big problems. In the last few months I’ve met a number of people who are learning that lesson the hard way. After decades of avoiding uncomfortable family issues they are facing extremely difficult challenges regarding succession. Now, without any experience working with one another to resolve small issues, they are hoping to work through the most difficult challenges many of us will ever face. The conversations are made even more difficult because of the hurts that have gone untended and the resentments that have grown from not taking care of the family in the family business. It’s a tough way to learn that success has more to do with healthy relationships than with conception rates and balance sheets. I don’t mean to suggest that the physically demanding work that ranches require can be ignored, but it doesn’t have to be all consuming. Many Ranching for Profit school alumni have discovered that the ranch was all consuming only because they allowed it to be that way. After the school they restructured the business to increase profit and liberate their time to put more life in their work/ life balance. They still work as hard as anyone, just not as long. Their ranches are great places to raise their families, and they actually take the time and make the effort to be directly involved in raising them.

Wheat markets were mixed with Minneapolis regaining some of its losses against the winter wheats. Quality losses are mounting in Argentina with heavy rains delaying the last 25% of the harvest. Soybeans surged higher on signs of Chinese buying ahead of more trade talks. Corn was quiet with support from potential sales to China offset by fears of falling profitability from the bio-fuels sector. The cattle complex was slightly higher, supported by a strong cash market to wrap up the calendar year. A major winter storm passed through the central plains and into the Midwest, creating muddy feedlots, stressing cattle and slowing marketing just as packers were trying to secure enough numbers for full kill weeks after the holidays. Feeders found support from the higher live cattle market and on optimism that demand for grass calves and feedlot ready calves would be strong following the holiday break. The energy markets were weaker as more evidence of slowing global economies suggested energy demand would be declining as well. A weaker dollar and stock market volatility helped the precious metals continue their rally. The Dow rebounded slightly following a huge sell-off during December, and an even bigger drawdown from the early October all-time high. THIS IS A SOLICITATION. Wolf Harvested in Region 6 Near Glasgow

According to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, a wolf was legally harvested Jan. 7, 2019, by a local hunter near Glasgow in Valley Co. FWP officials have inspected and tagged the animal. This is the first wolf to be harvested in Region 6, which is part of wolf management unit 400, since wolves were removed from the endangered species list in Montana in 2011. FWP manages wolves across Montana under a statewide management plan, including eastern Montana. FWP is committed to responsibly managing Montana’s wolf population while addressing conflicts with livestock and other wildlife populations. Although wolf populations and management activities are largely focused on western Montana, all the same wolf management tools are in place across eastern Montana. Hunting and trapping wolves: Wolves may be hunted throughout the state, with a season from Sept. 2-Sept. 14 (archery) and Sept. 15-March 15 (rifle). Hunting wolves requires a wolf license, which can be purchased over the counter for $19 (resident) or $50 (nonresident). Proof of hunter education must be presented at the time of purchase. Wolves may also be trapped ($20 resident, $1 resident landowner, $250 nonresident) from Dec. 15-Feb. 28. Completion of either the Idaho or Montana wolf trapping certification class is mandatory. Persons could take a combination of up to five wolves via hunting and/or trapping. According to the 2017 Montana Gray Wolf Program Annual Report, population estimates suggest there are approximately 900 wolves in Montana, with an annual wolf harvest that averages about 225 animals per year. During the 2017-2018 wolf season, 255 wolves were harvested: 65 percent hunting, 35 percent trapping. Approximately, $380,000 was generated for wolf conservation and management by wolf license sales. Wolves and livestock: Another aspect of wolf management includes increased emphasis on proactive prevention of livestock depredation. Montana law and administrative rules (MCA 87-3-130; ARM 12.9.1301-1305) allow a person to kill a wolf that is seen in the act of attacking, killing, or threatening to kill livestock or domestic dogs.

Montana Made Sheds: Call Pioneer Sheds 406-380-2315, made right here in Central Montana. Delivery & Setup, Purchase or Rent-toOwn. Storage Sheds, Greenhouses, Garages, Mini-Barns and Animals Shelters. Custom Design options. Full catalog available at www. trailsidestructures.com. 12-II Continued on page 7...

7 Tricia’s Trader......................................................................Volume XVII Issue 2........................................................................January 16th, 2019

Continued from page 6... -no permit is required and FWP must be notified within 72 hours of take or attempt to take -preserve the scene and leave the carcass where it was killed; carcass is surrendered to FWP -physical evidence of the wolf attack or that an attack was imminent is required (injured or -dead livestock, broken fences, trampled vegetation and wolf sign) that would lead a reasonable person to conclude the attack was imminent -wolves cannot be intentionally baited, fed, or deliberately attracted -Wolves may be opportunistically hazed or harassed This same law also allows private citizens to kill a wolf that is seen in the act of attacking, killing or threatening a domestic dog or another human. Again, FWP must be notified within 72 hours of take or attempt to take. Livestock depredation by wolves during 2017 was approximately 25 percent of what it was in 2009, when it was at a peak. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services confirmed 80 livestock losses to wolves in 2017, which included 49 cattle, 12 sheep, and 19 goats during 2017. One dog was also killed by wolves. This total was up compared to 53 livestock losses during 2016. During 2017 the Montana Livestock Loss Board paid $64,133 for livestock Wildlife Services confirmed as probable or certain wolf kills. FWP would encourage anyone who believes they see a wolf in Region 6 to contact your local biologist, game warden, or call the Glasgow Region 6 FWP Headquarters at 406-2283700. To learn more about Montana’s wolf population, visit FWP online at fwp.mt.gov, or go directly to this link: fwp.mt.gov/ fishAndWildlife/management/wolf/.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Political Resolutions Whether the demon you annually pledged to defeat is excess calories, alcohol, nicotine, opiates, meth or laziness a recent survey revealed most folks abandon their New Year resolutions by the 12th of January—not exactly stellar self-discipline. Do you think less of someone because they do not do what they pledge? Probably not because voting history shows 50 plus percent of Americans endorse public officials who violate their swearing-in resolution to “support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Those who ignore their oath of office are destroying America. Our republic is founded on two principles: First, our Creator endowed each of us equally with natural rights. Second, we are a nation of a limited government whose only defined function is securing those rights. Nothing else. America’s framers recognized government as a necessary evil which would grow malignantly were it not held in check. As such, they established a written Constitution hindering government’s, natural pathological growth. Each elected public servant begins their term by pledging allegiance to this Constitution with its inherent restrictions and this creates the rub of which I write. Progressivism is a Marxist ideology completely contrary to the limited government restricted by our Constitution. All Democrats and Democratic Socialists, be they Senators, Representatives, or nonpartisan judges, embrace progressive principles with an unwavering loyalty found nowhere else in the animal kingdom. They crave absolute power over the unwashed and will destroy any and all who obstruct their quest to be in the ruling class. They deem the Constitution as old and outdated so dismiss their flamboyant resolution to support, protect and defend it as meaningless ceremony. Sadly, many Republicans are so drunk by power, they too privately embrace progressivism while publicly proclaiming their allegiance to liberty and limited government. Their sin is greater than the Democrats. This leaves a handful of patriotic public servants guarding your liberty by adhering to their oath of office. They are weakening. Incessant indoctrination has convinced the little people government, not God, is the source of all rights. Today, far too many Americans demand government deliver a citizen’s imaginary right to healthcare, food, affordable housing, happiness, a basic income, and free college tuition. Ultimately, our great nation founded on liberty, limited government and opportunity has morphed into an oppressive, progressive monstrosity and all because elected officials make a resolution they never intend to keep. What say you?

Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer

The Key to Fulfill Your Purpose in Life! God loves you and He has a good plan for your life. You are a wonderful creation made by Him and you have a unique purpose to fulfill in this world. Ephesians 2:10 (AMP) says that as Christians, “we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus…for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].” It’s so exciting to know we are each created with a purpose and God has a good life that He has prepared in advance for us to live. But it’s important to understand that we have an enemy, Satan, who wants to keep us from having the life Jesus died to give us. Yes, Satan has a plan for us, too, and his plan is destruction and death. John 10:10 (ESV) says the enemy “comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” The good news is we have everything we need through Christ to overcome the enemy. We just have to know who we are in Christ, believe that we have His authority, and know how to release the power God has given us. The Measure of Your Faith Faith in God is required for us to release the power and authority we have in Christ. Romans 12:3 (ESV) says each person has a “measure of faith that God has assigned.” This means God has given you enough faith to do His will, whatever it may be and no matter what the enemy throws at you to stop you. There are many challenges and difficult situations we have to face in life. You may have a child with special needs to care for, or maybe you’re in a difficult marriage. You could be facing a devastating illness or have serious financial problems. Whatever your situation is, God has given you everything you need, through Christ, to keep you moving forward in His plan for your life. We need to always remember that God is greater than our problems— nothing is too hard for Him and nothing catches Him by surprise. When we’re going through hard times and the enemy is attacking us, we don’t need to ask, “What can I do?” The question is, “What can God do?” The Word says all things are possible with God, and greater is He who lives in me than he who is in the world. (See Matthew 19:26 and 1 John 4:4.) I want you to really get this in your heart today: In Christ, you have enough faith and the strength you need to do whatever you need to do in life! Get rid of “I can’t” thinking and focus on the truth of God’s Word, which says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” (See Philippians 4:13.) The Simple Solution to Overcome Enemy Attack Prayer is a simple, powerful way to interrupt Satan’s plan because we release our faith through prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (ESV) says, “Pray without ceasing.” This basically means prayer can be as natural as breathing, and our first response in every situation. It’s so amazing that we can talk to God all the time. Now the enemy doesn’t want us to pray, so he will do everything he can to discourage us. He wants us to think prayer is hard, that we need to use eloquent speech and sound poetic, that we need to be careful what we ask God for so we don’t overload Him with too many requests, or that we have to be in a certain place with a certain posture (on our knees, head bowed, eyes closed) for God to hear us. But it’s actually simple to pray effectively. James 5:16 (ESV) says, “…The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” God wants you to come to Him honestly, with a sincere heart, and just talk to Him as a friend. Be yourself and don’t approach conversation with God as a religious activity. Humble yourself before Him and open your heart to Him. He loves you and wants you to walk in His will for your life victoriously. As a believer in Jesus Christ, you are God’s child and He is always with you. He is Almighty God, and if God is on your side, who can be against you? In Christ, you have what you need today to live in victory. Put your faith in God constantly. Pray, take God-inspired action, and fulfill your true purpose
