Montana Farmers Incurring Losses to Unharvested Crops due to Recent Snowstorms May be Eligible for WHIP+

Wildfire and Hurricane Indemnity Program Plus (WHIP+) Eligibility

WHIP+ may be available for eligible producers who have incurred eligible losses of certain crops, trees, bushes, and vines in counties where heavy snowfall occurred. Eligible crops include those for which federal crop insurance or Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) coverage is available, excluding crops intended for grazing.

For instance, producers that incurred losses on unharvested crops due to the snowstorms this fall are encouraged to contact their local FSA office to file a WHIP+ application, form FSA-894.

To be eligible for WHIP+, the first criteria is that incurred losses were a result of a qualifying disaster event such as snowstorms. A notice of loss must be on file with crop insurance or at FSA for NAP covered crops. For uninsured crops, a notice of loss must be filed with FSA as part of the WHIP+ application. Producers must provide documentation to support the loss was due to snow as a result of the snowstorms.

Both insured and uninsured producers are eligible to apply for WHIP+. However, all producers receiving WHIP+ payments will be required to purchase crop insurance or NAP, at the 60 percent coverage level or higher, for the next two available, consecutive crop years after the crop year for which WHIP+ payments were paid. Producers who fail to purchase crop insurance for the next two applicable, consecutive years will be required to pay back the WHIP+ payment.

At the time of sign-up, producers may be asked to provide verifiable and reliable production records. If a producer is unable to provide production records, they can certify their production. WHIP+ payments will be determined based on the lower of either the actual loss certified by the producer and determined acceptable by FSA or the county expected yield and county disaster yield.

The county disaster yield is the production that a producer would have been expected to make based on the eligible disaster conditions in the county.

Prevent Catching & Spreading the Flu with these Easy Tips.

Cut Down on Coughy!

There are several steps you can take to help prevent catching the flu and reduce the spread of viruses that cause it. It’s easier than you think, read below for tips and advice.

What To Do

Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the first step to flu prevention. In general, all healthy people should get vaccinated. The CDC now recommends that, in addition to other high risk groups, all healthy children get a flu vaccination. Find a local vaccination center here.

Wash your hands. Cold and flu viruses may be spread by indirect contact. Maybe someone sneezes onto their hand and then touches a doorknob, only to have the virus picked up by the next person who also touches it. Washing your hands is the best way to prevent getting sick.

Do the elbow cough. Since viruses cling to your bare hands, you can reduce the spread of viruses by perfecting the art of the elbow cough. When you cough, simply cover your face with your entire elbow. It’s also an easy technique to teach kids.

Disinfect common surfaces. Viruses that cause colds and flu can survive on common surfaces for up to 72 hours.

Don’t forget to use Clorox® disinfecting products on phone receivers, doorknobs, light switches, and remote controls.

Drink Water*. Water can help strengthen your immune system, keeping the flu at bay. And if you do get sick, water flushes your system, rehydrates you and washes out the toxins. An adult should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of fluids each day. If the color of your urine is close to clear, then you are getting enough. School instructor, Dallas Mount, recently led a management succession workshop in Baggs, Wyoming. Dallas is a gifted, innovative teacher, and I was flattered when he asked me to participate in the program.

Dallas did a great job of distilling successful succession into five core areas.

I’m going to use the next five ProfitTips to share some of the pearls from the Management Succession program that Dallas led.

Getting on the same page

To get on the same page you actually have to have a page! Agreements and policies need to be written down. If they aren’t documented, people cannot be held accountable to them.

Actually, we need to get people on the same pages, because there are three distinct documents that every business needs. The first page is a shared vision that describes what y’all see for the future of the ranch. At the Ranching For Profit School we use a process to help people separate positions from interests and create a blueprint for the future of their ranch.

The second page focuses on owner value. This page should include a description of the financial and non-monetary values the owners of your business want to receive. It should also identify specific, measurable targets and show how and when achievement relative to those targets will be measured.

The third page is an outline of succession and asset transfer plans.

Too often kids grow up with a sense of entitlement and an expectation that “someday this, or at least a big part of this, will be mine.” It’s probably healthier to make it clear to family members, from the time they are young, that there might be career options for them that involve the ranch. They should understand that there is no guarantee of employment. It’s unlikely that you can just create jobs out of thin air for any family member who wants to come on board. They will probably have to wait for an opening. It is difficult for them to step in unless someone else is prepared to step down.

Junior must also understand that the ranch isn’t a jobs program for other-wise unemployable family members. When openings become available, they will only be filled by family members who have the skills to be successful in those roles.

Learning to See the Unseen

Being a Christian and following God is a great adventure.

It’s also challenging because, to people who don’t believe in Christ, we seem a bit odd in our way of thinking and doing things, like we’re upside down compared to how the world generally operates. But the truth is, we’re part of “the upside-down kingdom that is right-side up.”

During His ministry on Earth, Jesus’ message was, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17 NIV). His disciples believed Jesus had come to set up an earthly kingdom and rule the world, but that isn’t what He was talking about at all.

The disciples didn’t get it. They were thinking in physical terms, not spiritual ones.

As believers in Jesus who are born again, we are new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17); we belong to God and are part of His kingdom (Colossians 1:12-14). The kingdom of God is unseen to the natural eye, and it is eternal.

Developing Spiritual Vision

The apostle Paul talked about seeing the unseen. In 2 Corinthians 4:16-18,

he said, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (NIV).

Paul had been beaten, shipwrecked, imprisoned, and gone hungry many times, yet he considered these experiences to be “light and momentary troubles.” He believed this because the kingdom of God—what is eternal—was more real to him than this earthly realm—what is temporary.

This is hard for us because we are so accustomed to only believing what we can see with our natural eyes, and if we don’t see God doing something, we assume He isn’t doing anything. But instead of just looking at the world around us and our problems, we can learn to think about and see with spiritual eyes what God is in the process of doing in the midst of it all.

I’ve discovered that when I’m feeling discouraged because I’ve been praying for something a long time and I’m weary of waiting for breakthrough, instead of getting down in the dumps, I can stir up my faith and say, “God is working!”

If you want to have a steady flow of joy in your life and “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7 NIV), learn how to believe what you can’t see more than what you can see.

Open the Eyes of My Heart

In Ephesians 1:18, Paul prayed “that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you” (NIV). The eyes of your heart can see the unseen realm of the spirit and give you hope—a confident expectation of God’s goodness in your life—in every situation.

With this kind of hope, when hard times come, we can look beyond what we see in the world around us and realize that there are good things going on. God has done, and He’s doing, so many things in our lives!

He loves us and has good plans for us to give us hope and a future. (Jeremiah • 29:11) • He’s always with us and will never leave us or forsake us. (Deuteronomy

31:6; Hebrews 13:5) Jesus paid the price to heal and restore every kind of brokenness in our •

lives. (Isaiah 53 and 61) • And He’s preparing a place for us so we can be with Him throughout

eternity! (John 14:2-3) THIS is the truth we need to live by.

Refuse to Give Up!

I wonder what God is up to in your life. I know it’s easy to get discouraged and fearful when hard times come and it seems things will never change. But if you’re a believer in Christ and you’re praying according to the truth in God’s Word, then you can be assured He is working. So don’t stop believing because you’re not getting an answer as quickly as you’d like.

Keep believing no matter how long it takes. And remember that just because you haven’t seen the final outcome yet, it doesn’t mean God isn’t doing something.

Make a determined decision to trust Him and believe what He says no matter what you think or feel or how things look. And pray for God to enlighten the eyes of your heart so you “know the hope to which he has called you” in His kingdom. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Pheasant Jamboree Helps Northern Athletics

The Northern Lights Athletic Scholarship Foundation's 19th Annual Legends for Lights Pheasant Jamboree took place Oct. 11-13. Approximately 450 people attended the events that included the trap shoot, the autograph session, the pheasant hunting, not to mention the many meals put on by many generous local businesses. There were 18 teams that participated in the annual event with a total of 25 Legends returning including two hometown heroes, Mike Tilleman and Marc Mariani. Neil Moisey of Team Malisani Inc. was the Big Bird Winner of Day 1 and Marc Mariani of Team Independence Bank was the Big Bird winner of Day 2. The Overall Winning team was Patrick Construction.

Over the years this foundation and the Legend for Lights Pheasant Jamboree has contributed over $1,650,000 to the MSU-Northern Athletic Department. This contribution has enabled the offering of more scholarships to student athletes, provided assistance for coaches to attend professional clinics, subsidized coaches’ salaries, expanded recruiting resources, as well as, helped equip the weight room and training room.

The Legends for Lights Pheasant Jamboree is a combination of former NFL, NHL, MLB, and other professional legends along with locals and outdoor enthusiasts from across the country coming together for a four day jamboree that includes trap shooting, pheasant hunting, autograph signing, and of course a little storytelling. Individuals travel from all across the United States to take part in this one of a kind event--some serious huntsman--some just to see old friends and have a good time.

The focus of the event is the two days of pheasant hunting on the opening weekend of pheasant hunting season. Teams are comprised of four hunters, one Legend, a huntsman with dogs, and a host. Teams travel across the countryside, to hunt on land that is provided generously by the local landowners, in search of pheasants.

The event begins with registration on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. The Jamboree's opening event is a trap shoot at the Havre Trap Club. The Trap Club provides a place for hunt safety and many rounds of trap shooting with Northern athletes. Saturday and Sunday hunt days start early with breakfast that is provided each morning by our local community organizations.

Some teams get out at daybreak in the early frosty morning for some pheasant hunting so they can enjoy the afternoon catching up with fellow teammates and friends.

Sunday is the final day of hunting followed by a prime rib and shrimp dinner during the awards ceremony.

Teaching the value of work...and money Dear Dave, Is it okay to give very young children an allowance?

Christie Dear Christie, Teaching kids there’s an emotional connection between work and money is one of the best things you can do as a parent. Once your kids are old enough to do a few simple chores around the house, they’re old enough to earn a little money doing them.

In my mind, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting kids who are three or four on a basic commission system. If they do the jobs you assign them, they get paid. If they don’t do the jobs, they don’t get paid. We put a little dry-erase board on the refrigerator, and listed the jobs they had to do during the week with a dollar amount next to each one.

Keep in mind, kids shouldn’t get paid for every little thing they do around the house. Some jobs are just a necessary component of being part of a family. And there are some things kids should do simply because mom or dad asked them to. Some jobs should have a higher purpose in mind, too, because as a parent, you should want to find as many teachable moments for your kids as possible.

Once they’ve earned their money, sit down with them and divide it into three separate envelopes—saving, spending, and giving. That way, they get to learn about the uses for money while they’re learning how to work!
