MSU-Northern Helps the 4-H Foundation with the Don Greytak Calendar Project TThe Montana 4-H Foundation recently raffled off a collection of Don Greytak 4-H calendars to celebrate 28 consecutive years of a very successful 4-H calendar project. Those who purchased a 2019 calendar were able to enter their name into a drawing. Scott Burnett and Courtney Nagle of Saint Paul, Minnesota, won the complete 19922019 Montana Greytak 4-H calendar collection. Thomas Welch, an agricultural professor at MSUNorthern, who originally came up with the Greytak calendar and 4-H association idea, donated the calendar collection. The early calendars were titled ‘Montana Agriculture Calendar’ that later changed to ‘Greytak 4-H Calendar.’ The mint calendar collection was presented in a beautiful Birch and Walnut box crafted by Jim Potter of Havre. The top of the box has a very attractive tooled leather piece completed by leatherworker Ray Besel of Lewistown. Sandra Germann, the Executive Director of the Montana 4-H Foundation said, “Truly, the Montana 4-H Foundation is extremely grateful for Don Greytak’s contribution to this project and his talent and generous spirit needs to be noted.” The calendar artwork within this 28-year collection represents an astounding 364 unique Greytak pencil drawings. Sales from these calendars have benefited over a generation of local 4-H members throughout Montana, and have provided several hundred thousand dollars used for Montana 4-H member activities and youth development. Welch stated, “This is one of the most pleasing and rewarding projects I have ever been involved with! I am extremely appreciative of the many supporters of this project including Don Greytak, past Montana 4-H Foundation Executive Director Terry Wolfe, current Executive Director Sandra Germann, and early members of the Montana Aggies including Clint Peck, Hayden Ferguson, Fred Traeger and others that supported the project.” The Montana 4-H Foundation also thanks the many people throughout Montana who have supported 4-H members through the years by purchasing Montana 4-H calendars and helped make this unique and ongoing project so successful. www.msun.edu/news/article...

Most “ranch managers” aren’t managers. They don’t do the work of a manager, they don’t produce the results a manager would produce and they aren’t paid what a manager would get paid. The result isn’t just poor management. Most American ranches aren’t managed at all! Every business has three levels of issues. The first set of issues revolves around ownership. Owners are responsible for defining owner value and charting the strategic direction of the company. The next level, management, concerns itself with developing plans to implement the strategy and deliver owner value. The third level is labor. Labor does the work outlined in the plans. I was reminded of these different roles at last month’s Executive Link Conference in Big Sky, Montana. Following presentations by E-Myth coaches, in which they made the distinction between entrepreneurs, managers and technicians, we visited the Flying D ranch. At the Flying D we met with two highly effective managers, Mark Kossler and Danny Johnson. (When Mark first attended the Ranching for Profit School and joined Executive Link, he was the manager of the Flying D. He now manages all of the ranches in the Turner network, totaling about two million acres.) Their remarks about strategic and tactical planning, developing relationships within the ranch team, with customers and with regulators, highlighted the difference between what real managers do and what most people we call ranch managers do. A more accurate title for most ranch managers would be “foreman.” A foreman is the person who oversees work and ensures that it is done according to the plan. The manager is the person who creates the plan and orchestrates the team. You might think the characteristics and responsibilities of someone managing over 50,000 animals on 2,000,000 acres would be a lot different than someone working at a smaller scale. But regardless of scale, an effective manager needs to plan, delegate and communicate. Planning The plan the manager creates shows how owner objectives will be achieved. Planning includes projecting livestock performance and describing how the grazing resources will be managed to support that performance (and produce other wildlife and landscape objectives). The planning includes projecting enterprise gross margins, profit (or loss) and cash flow and shows how labor will be deployed through the year. Delegation Most managers got promoted because they excelled at doing the technical work they now manage. It is natural that many find it tempting to continue to do most of that work themselves. But effective managers delegate that work, knowing that the cost of doing the technical work themselves is too high. To delegate effectively, they clearly define the results they want, document processes that produce those outcomes and hold people accountable for using those processes and producing results. Communication If the biggest job of a manager is planning, the most important skill is communication. Effective managers know how to communicate the plan to owners and employees, and listen to concerns of both with empathy. Our Challenge One big constraint we face in ranching is that our ranches are too small to justify hiring qualified people for each position … although it could be that our ranches are too small because we haven’t hired qualified people for each position. We often wear all of the hats (ownership, management, labor) in the business ourselves. That makes distinguishing one role from another difficult. Difficult, but no less important. Many ranches don’t have a strategic plan or an operating plan. They don’t prepare a budget unless the bank makes them. They don’t set goals or targets and, if they do, they don’t monitor the results they get against those targets. They don’t define employee roles, effectively delegate or hold people accountable. The most common reason I hear for the failure to manage is that we don’t have time. We are too busy doing the technician’s work. The result is that we often do things right without knowing if we are doing the right things. I think there is something even bigger at work. I don’t think most ranchers know how to manage. And how could we? No one ever taught us. Dad showed us how to build a brace, put up hay and vaccinate a cow. He taught us how to grow crops and raise cattle. He never showed us how to plan or delegate or communicate. Imagine the difference it would make if someone in your business had these skills.

Wheat markets were mixed with spring wheat regaining some lost ground against the winter wheats. Another bomb cyclone hit the northern plains, dropping deep snow across much of spring wheat country and further delaying fieldwork. Winter wheats moved lower on improving crop conditions for both hard red winter and soft red winter. Corn and soybeans worked lower as world prices were pressed by abundant supplies coming out of South America as their harvest moves quickly along and production estimates continue to increase. Cattle futures were slightly lower for both lives and feeders, despite an improvement in cash trade. The market is gearing up for increasing beef supplies from record numbers on feed and an anticipated improvement in dressed weights as warmer temperatures should help improve feedlot conditions. Feeder cattle saw choppy price action as front months struggled to hold recent gains while deferred contracts held near their contract highs. The energy complex was higher in response to robust economic activity and the upcoming summer driving season. The Dow was slightly lower as it hovered near alltime highs. Metals were weaker on a one-day sell-off that erased a recent rebound.

Criminal Justice Faculty Help Recruit Students

Colleges all across the United States are seeing a decline in enrollments, fortunately more and more faculty are starting to help recruit students. MSU-Northern is pleased to see Jack Bieger and Dr. Samantha Balemba doing their part to help recruit students into their Criminal Justice program. Recruiters have a broad knowledge about all the programs but faculty are able to provide greater insights into the values of their specific programs. This past year Balemba and Bieger have made several cold calls to 2-year institutions and high schools trying to make opportunities to come in and talk about their Criminal Justice Program. They make their school presentations exciting by using things from their classes like handcuffs, Tasers, red guns, and a continuous slide show that demonstrates what students will do in their classes. Students are very excited to discover that they can get employment and make a living in Montana, around the nation, and in the federal government. As part of their recruiting efforts, Bieger has developed articulation agreements with several of the 2-year schools like: Aaniiih Nakoda College (ANC), Blackfeet Community College (BCC), Dawson Community College (DCC), Fort Peck Community College (FPCC), Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC), Great Fall College (GFC), Helena College (HC), and Stone Child College (SCC). These agreements are ways of reaching these students and encouraging them to continue their education at MSU-Northern. A little legwork on the part of MSU-Northern’s Criminal Justice faculty will go a long ways to help their program grow. Emotions: Getting to the Root of the Problem

MSU-Northern PAS Club Helps with Read and Feed The Agribusiness Committee of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce recently read and introduced 18 new agricultural themed books to seven classes of first graders at Highland Park School. Committee members teamed up for the reading with Professional Agricultural Student (PAS) Club members from Montana State University-Northern. The first grade students were also offered chocolate milk and graham crackers and informed about the many contributions agriculture provides them in the world.

This is the ninth year the Agribusiness Committee has conducted the “Read & Feed.” They usually schedule the event around National Agriculture Week and the first day of spring. Over the years, the Agribusiness Committee has donated approximately $2400 to the elementary school for the purchase of around 150 agricultural themed, early elementary books for use in their school library. This read and feed follows the mission of the Havre Agribusiness Committee: “To recognize the agricultural industry through education and promotion within the community.” www.msun.edu/news/article...

Are you emotionally healthy? It seems there are a lot of people who aren’t, and I used to be one of them. Because I grew up in a very unstable, angry atmosphere and was abused by my father for years, I became a miserable, angry, controlling adult and didn’t know how to have healthy relationships. And until I learned how to grow in my relationship with Christ, I was a mess in my soul. Many people have wounds in their soul because of things that have happened to them. They’ve been abused or mistreated and it’s caused them to have a victim mentality, to get stuck in self-pity, to have an out-of-control temper or a constant sense of insecurity, and so on. When we have unhealthy emotions, and the bad behavior that comes as a result of it, we have to get to the root of the issue to fix it. Matthew 12:33 (ESV) says, “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit.” In other words, where there’s rotten fruit, there’s a rotten root! Take Responsibility for Your Roots I remember years ago when I would complain to Dave, saying, “We don’t talk about anything!” Finally, one day Dave said to me, “You know, Joyce, WE don’t talk. YOU talk and you want me to listen and agree with you.” He was right! Whenever I would share an opinion about something with Dave, if he didn’t agree with me, the fight was on! We would get into these big arguments and I would end up so confused, thinking, “I don’t even know what we’re talking about anymore!” The really frustrating thing was I didn’t understand what my problem was, so I just kept blaming it all on Dave. When we don’t take responsibility for our problems, we blame them on someone or something else. But when I finally got to the point where I was sick and tired of arguing with Dave all the time, I prayed for God to show me what was wrong. He showed me that I had a root of rejection in my soul from the way I was raised, and until that root was dealt with, the fruit (or behavior) in my life would never change. The Truth About Your Value in God’s Eyes When you’re afraid of rejection, if people don’t agree with you, you feel rejected by them. So when Dave and I were trying to have a conversation, if he didn’t agree with me, I felt that he was rejecting me. The truth is when Dave had a different opinion, he wasn’t rejecting me; he was rejecting my opinion. And I had to learn to separate who I am from my opinion and trust that whether or not he liked my opinion, he still loved me! It was a major breakthrough for me to get this revelation. Through this situation I learned how to be a person who is loved and valued by God because of what Jesus has done for me, and to separate my “who” from my “do.” It took some time and I had to be determined to trust God’s Word, which says He loves me unconditionally and nothing can separate me from His love, but eventually, I became secure in knowing who I am in Christ. So…How’s Your Emotional Health? I want to ask you again: Are you emotionally healthy? Are you dealing with a root of rejection in your life? Is there a person in your life that you can’t talk to without getting upset or losing your temper? When someone disagrees with you does it make you feel insulted, stupid, rejected, or disrespected? If this is you, then you need to know that God doesn’t want you to live this way. In Ephesians 3, the apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians: “That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (vv. 17-19, ESV). This is my prayer for you—that you would be planted deep in the knowledge that God loves you unconditionally and know that, while He may not always love everything you do, He always loves you! I also want to encourage you to spend time every day alone with God in prayer and study the Bible. Dig in to scriptures about the love of God and choose to trust that every one of those promises is for you. The truth is: You are loved and you are valuable to God!

It was a Monday. Union General George Thomas led his Army of the Cumberland through the Confederate line on Tennessee’s Orchard Knob. The blue and gray battled on Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge until the rebels hastily retreated into Georgia. Losing the railroad hub of Chattanooga opened the deep south to Union invasion thus sealing the fate of the Confederacy. On Friday, 155 years later, the trophy wife and I toured Chattanooga’s National Military ark on Lookout Mountain. It was a deathly calm spring morning and we solemnly strolled the Confederate stronghold while gazing down into the Tennessee River Valley. Rebel Howitzers remained perched on rock outcroppings making it easy to imagine the carnage inflicted on soldiers battling their way to the summit. History is far too valuable to ignore. Civil Wars are not civil, and 12,400 Americans died over those three November days in 1863. It is so easy to say, “never again,” yet once again, our union of states is engaged in another civil war; this one being fought in the political arena. Rather than a division between slave and free states, today’s battle is between free stuff and freedom. Interestingly, only the socialists recognize they are fighting for their ideological lives. The squishy Republicans remain blindly hopeful liberty can survive through capitulation thus leaving but a handful of conservative constitutionalists protecting freedom. We could lose without firing a shot and this brings me to President Trump. I was a late-comer to the Trump train but admire his resolve after enduring two years of relentless attacks from the main stream media, political opponents and deep-state intelligent operatives. He personifies the stars and stripes waving over Fort McHenry the morning after the all-night British bombardment in 1814. Why was it still standing? Why is he still standing? God truly governs the affairs of men and He has placed Mr. Trump exactly where He wanted him. No other candidate could have stood this onslaught and if Donald Trump is not one of America’s greatest presidents, he is certainly one of the toughest. After two years, 500 witnesses and 2800 subpoenas, Russian collusion has been proven a hoax. Mueller’s entire investigation was based on a false premise created by the Clinton campaign with a nod and a wink from the Obama administration. America’s equal application of justice was purposely morphed to protect leftists while spying on an American citizen and then trying to overturn said citizen’s successful election into the presidency. This is treason. President Trump’s administration must immediately enforce the rule of law and hold everyone accountable for their actions. This can never be allowed to happen again.
