Motorsports Season is here!

Last Friday (April 5), 480 people packed into the Armory Gymnasium for the 14th Annual Spring Fling. The Northern Lights Athletic and Scholarship Foundation hosts the event every year to raise money for MSU-Northern’s athletics program. There were many games to choose from including Get Out of Jail, Bingo, and a Dice Roll for a chance to win $10,000 and $25,000. There were 21 live auctions and over 60 silent auction items which the coaches and student athletes gathered. The Northern Food Services catered a fabulous variety of food such as prime rib, pork, taco bar and wing bar Several athletes were recognized for their achievements throughout the year, including the AllAmericans, which included three wrestlers (Isaac Bartel, Andrew Bartel, Brandon Weber) and the Men’s Athlete of the Year (Brandon Weber) and Women’s Athlete of the Year (Peyton Kehr) Student athletes worked the game stations and tended to tables, others escorted attendees to their tables. All student athletes and coaches are a big part of this fundraiser. The 9th Annual Bob Bricker Award was given to Darrel and Shirley Briese who have graciously donated land for the Annual Pheasant Hunt, cash and their home in Cabo to be auctioned off at the Spring Fling over the past 14 years The night ended with “Let’s Make a Deal.” Although nobody won any big money, a good time was had by all! The cattle market ran into strong selling just days after seeing new contract highs in feeders. Cash fed markets were higher but couldn’t support the buckling futures market. Record numbers of cattle on feed as of April 1st cast a negative tone for cattle markets into the summer months. Feeder cattle quickly retreated from their contract highs on the weaker live cattle futures and softening prices at auction barns. Energy prices worked higher on ideas that increased sanctions against Iran would limit world crude supplies. The US dollar was strongly higher as foreign economies showed continued signs of slowing, leading investors to make a safe haven move toward US investment.

Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer

It’s All in Your Mind Have you ever wondered if something is holding you back from experiencing the promises of God in your life? I remember a time when I was hearing about all the promises of God but never actually experiencing them. I heard about peace, but I didn’t have any. I heard about joy, but I was unhappy all the time. I could see God’s promises in His Word and I believed them, but something was missing. As I spent time studying God’s Word, I came to realize that the root of my problem was found in the wrong mindsets I was living with. Identifying Your Mindset The story of the Israelites is a good example of what a difference our mindset can make. In Exodus 13, we read about how God called them out of Egypt to possess the Promised Land. But what was supposed to be an 11-day journey ended up being a 40-year journey through the wilderness—all because they didn’t know how to think right (see Deuteronomy 1). One wrong mindset the Israelites had was, “Please make everything easy for me because I can’t take it when things are too hard.” When things got hard for them and they had to fight their enemies, instead of turning to God, they started grumbling and complaining about their situation. They thought their enemies were the problem, but it was really their thinking. So instead of moving forward and experiencing the good things God had planned for them, He had to take them the long, hard way through the wilderness in order to prepare them to possess the Promised Land. Walking Through the Wilderness Like the Israelites, sometimes we’re not ready for all that God has planned for us, so we spend a little time in “the wilderness” growing up and learning how to trust Him. I know what this is like from personal experience. There was a time when I had an “it’s just too hard” attitude and mindset about things I needed to face. When God spoke to my heart that I needed to completely forgive people who had hurt me, it seemed impossible to me. But realizing that He didn’t expect me to do it in my own strength gave me the courage to take a step of faith and choose to forgive, trusting that God would change my heart and set me free from the misery of bitterness and unforgiveness. It wasn’t easy, but the peace and joy I now have is so much better than living with the bitterness and resentment of unforgiveness. And I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today if I hadn’t obeyed God’s direction in this area of my life. God sometimes has to bring us through hardship to test us, humble us and to see if we will keep His commandments in the wilderness. Deuteronomy 8:2 (ESV) says, “You shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.” God wants to help us learn how to obey Him in the wilderness because if we don’t keep His commandments when life is hard, then we won’t keep them when everything is going our way. He wants us to be strong enough and mature enough to keep moving forward in His plan for our lives. Setting Your Mind in the Right Direction Instead of having the mindset that says, “It’s just too hard!” the truth is that with God’s help, you can do whatever you need to do in life. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” So, when the enemy starts to tell you that your circumstances are impossible, you’ll never make it, and you should quit, you can be confident knowing this promise from God: I can do whatever I need to do through Christ who gives me strength. You can look to God for the strength you need to deal with whatever life throws at you. Once we adopt a right mindset to replace a wrong one, we must be determined to keep our thoughts headed in that direction. Colossians 3:2 says to “set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth” (AMPC). You do that by focusing on the promises of God in His Word, choosing to trust what He says more than what your circumstances look like, what others say or how you feel. The truth is God loves you, He has wonderful plans for your life and He wants you to experience all He has for you. Instead of letting your mind get stuck on the hard things in your life, think about all that God has helped you through and all He has in store for you. Set your mind on Him and follow His lead through the wilderness to your Promised Land!

DAVE SAYS:

Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR DAVE, I’ll be retiring in the next couple of years. When I leave my job, we will have a yearly income of $65,000 through my pension. I don’t think we need an emergency fund with such a dependable, steady income stream like that, but my wife disagrees. She says she would feel safer if we had money set aside just for the unexpected. What do you think we should do? -Gary

MSGA Seeks New Manager of Communications

The Montana Stockgrowers Association is currently seeking applicants for the Manager of Communications position. If you have extensive knowledge of Montana agriculture, enjoy advocating on behalf of Montana's ranchers, and want to be a part of a small team, this could be the role for you. Reports To: MSGA Executive Vice President Responsible for all formal association communications including public relations, member communications, as well as acting as senior editor of all association publications and written materials. Monitors and reports on the beef industry and ranching issues in the traditional and trade media and online and helps develop and disseminate issue information to association stakeholders. Serves as the media contact person. Provides staff support for various MSGA committees and boards. Provides staff support for the policy development process. DEAR DAVE, Responsibilities: The school system I work for puts 12 percent of my pay into a public Produces the monthly MSGA newsletter publication: teacher retirement fund, and they match this amount. I’ve seen where you develops editorial plans, solicits articles from contributors, tell people to put 15 percent of their income toward retirement. If that’s the writes articles, edits material, coordinates advertisement case, should I put three percent into another retirement fund? I have no rates and placements, plans and directs production debt and very little in terms of expenses. Or, what would you think about the idea of opening another retirement account at a full 15 percent of what schedules, coordinates with printing house, and ensures effective delivery to recipients. I make? Manages and updates the MSGA website to provide -Patti effective association communications and public relations. Produces outreach content through social media tools like DEAR PATTI, I wouldn’t go as far as to pour an additional 15 percent into a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Produces annual Cattle Directory publication: different retirement plan, but I would consider putting maybe eight to 10 percent into a Roth IRA. I want you to have some money that’s separate solicits and gathers listings; coordinates advertisements from the school system account, just in case things go south with their and priority pages; plans, solicits and edits articles and other content; assists with Priority Page auction at Annual retirement fund. It sounds like you’ve got a pretty good pension plan, but you never Convention; maintains Priority Page buyer relations; know what might happen. I’m not predicting bad things, but at the same provides an update to Seedstock Committee at MSGA Midtime there’s no way I’d lean on the school system fund as my one and only Year Meeting and Annual Convention. source of retirement income. You should never put all your financial eggs Compiles issue information for weekly update email in one basket! to members and association stakeholders. -Dave Reports and distributes timely and accurate * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. Writes, edits and distributes press releases, audio/ visual clips and issue response information including letters-to-the-editor, media talking points, FAQs, reports, etc. Monitors media regarding beef industry issues: tracks and reports on key industry issues in the traditional media and appearing online, keeps a record of MSGA Continued on page 15... DEAR GARY, A good pension can feel pretty solid, but nothing’s perfect. Nothing lasts forever. There’s always the possibility of lost income or large, unexpected expenses. What if one of you has a major medical event? Life can bite you at any time, and sometimes it will take a big financial chunk out of you. You need an emergency fund! I recommend an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. Put it in a good money market account with check writing privileges and a decent interest rate. That way, your money will work for you a little bit. With a solid pension like you’re talking about, you could probably lean toward the three-month side, if you wanted. Honestly though, I’d save up six months of expenses—just in case. Trust me, a fully funded emergency fund will make you both feel better. Plus, it can turn a disaster into nothing more than an inconvenience! -Dave

Ranching For Profit Blog - Dave Pratt Healthy Land, Happy Families and Profitable Businesses www.ranchingforprofit.com

Monuments to Tax Avoidance We have our end of the year tax appointment next Monday. That reminded me of a ranch I visited a few years ago. The owner’s son showed me around. As we pulled out of the yard we passed a big aerator they’d bought to crush sagebrush. If you aren’t familiar with aerators, the drum is filled with water so that when a tractor drags it, it has enough heft to break off the trunks of the plants and crush the brush. This one looked brand new. “When did you get that?” I asked. “Three years ago,” the young rancher replied. “We got it to kill sagebrush.” After a pause he added, “Our accountant said we needed to spend some money so we wouldn’t have to pay taxes.” “It doesn’t look like it’s been used,” I observed. “We don’t have a tractor big enough to pull it,” he said with a little embarrassment. “Why don’t you sell it?” I asked. “Dad says someday we might buy a bigger tractor.” With prices in the tank, you may not have to deal with writing down profit to avoid paying taxes this year. But if you are showing a profit, your accountant may suggest that you prepay some of next year’s expenses. Your accountant may also suggest buying equipment and machinery to reduce the amount on which you’d have to pay taxes. Keep in mind that my objective is the opposite of your accountant’s. Your accountant wants to help you minimize your tax liability. I want to maximize it! I think income tax problems are great problems to have. “Oh darn, we made too much money!” We should all aspire to have that problem! I don’t have any problem with prepaying expenses or investing in things we really need and timing those costs to put us in a better tax position. But North American ranches are crowded with monuments to tax avoidance. These monuments depreciate, tie up capital that could be deployed in more productive ways and help make our ranches less profitable for years and years. The aerator I described earlier cost over $25,000 (I priced one this morning). It sits in the yard as a monument to tax avoidance. If they sold it they could probably buy 15 or more bred cows. If the gross margin on a cow is $500, and assuming adding 15 cows wouldn’t increase their overheads, that’d be a $7,500 profit.…but of course they’d have to pay taxes on that.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Spring Fever

Because mixed-animal veterinarians provide medical services at market prices, we must be frugal when equipping our hospitals. Also, unlike our counterparts who only treat the hairless primate called humans, rural critter doctors need a variety of specialty tools unique to each species. Horse doctors have little use for a Frick’s speculum or an Iowa hog holder, while pig practitioners only need an equine nasogastric tube to siphon gas from their ambulatory truck for their lawn mower. Decades back, Yellowstone County auctioned off excess items from an outdated, civil-defense, medical clinic; equipment I could adapt for my veterinary hospital. Surgical packs from the 1950s would be as functional today as they were the day they were manufactured. I was giddy thinking of my good fortune and expected to equip my clinic for pennies on the dollar. However, I found the fairground exhibit hall stuffed with veterinarians from eastern Montana and northern Wyoming. So much for Plan A. Midway through the sale, I was yet to score, when a three-gallon stainless steel bucket made its way to the podium. I was determined to not get skunked, but before I could bid, the price shot through $50 on its way to $65. Apparently, the hall contained at least two veterinarians unaware MWI Veterinary Supply sold the same buckets new for $25. Such is auction fever; a disorder occurring when afflicted bidders ignore value to only focus on winning. Imagine the overly-inflated price created when auction-fever afflicts politicians. Cost is no object when bidders have no skin in the game. Here is proof. At the auction to steer our republic, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) opened the climate change bidding when she declared mankind would perish in 12 years if America did not immediately abandon liberty and embrace socialism. Youngsters believe history began the day they were born and because AOC was birthed in 1989, she and her minions accept climate change indoctrination without question. Ignorance is bliss. On April 29th, famous trust-funder Irishman turned Hispanic, Beto O’Rourke frantically waved his buyer’s number and declared unless America surrendered to socialism the earth will end in 10 years. The crowd went wild. Joe Biden tried to seize the lead by bidding “8 years” but while fumbling to find his buyer number he accidently groped the girl in front of him. This brings me to my point. Progressives bid using other people’s money so are immune to the unsustainable cost of a bad buy. The cost of charity from the ruling class is always born by the little people, so run the numbers before you vote.
