Urbanization leads to food demand increase Population growth and rapid rural-urban migration leads to an increase in demand for more and greater diversity of food. Domestic food supply chains cannot keep up, according to a white paper published by The Economist Intelligence Unit and commissioned by Cargill. Food consumption is forecast to more than double on a per-capita basis in China and South Asia. The paper also said more diverse diets are more resource-intensive, especially when meat is included. Meat accounts for 17% of global calorie intake.

China to accept UK beef exports Britain will begin exporting beef to China later this year as both countries recently confirmed. This brings an end to the export ban that’s been in place for the last 23 years. Both countries are finalizing health protocols which will see health certificates accompany all shipments to China. Estimates on exports to China are 230 million pounds ($288 million) over the next five years. China began the process of lifting its import ban on British beef last February, and this year Chinese officials completed a series of inspections of meat-processing plants and other facilities in the UK. w w w. Ezzie’s Wholesale to Celebrate Open House at New Malta Store Bill Meyers and the entire staff for Ezzie’s Wholesale invite customers to attend an Open House at the brand new facility in Malta, located right next door to the old building at 47259 US Hwy 2, on July 26 from ten o-clock in the morning until about three o’clock. Product vendors will be on site; there will be door prizes and Traeger grills slow cooking some tasty cuisine for attendees to savor as the company celebrates this landmark day. If walls really could talk, as the saying goes, this new location is a clean slate, but the older building next door has seen a great deal of evolution. Ezzie’s Wholesale, Inc. locations today dot the map along the northern tier of Montana, but the mini-empire created by Clyde Ezra Ereaux, known to most as “Ezzie” had humble beginnings in the little store in Malta. After working for C.K. Hansen at his fuel company for a number (continued on page 4.)

Wheat markets got a bump from a bullish supply/demand report that showed USDA expects US wheat exports to increase from last month’s estimate. They also forecast additional wheat will be fed and average farmgate prices to rise slightly. A drop in Russian wheat production also underpinned the wheat market. Corn and soybeans rallied as hot and dry weather in the eastern Midwest begins to take a toll on late planted crops that are not well established. Cattle were higher as traders aggressively covered short positions after cash markets held steady and futures found consistent buying at support levels. Feeders also found support from improving cash prices for feedlot ready calves, buoyed by an abundance of feed grade wheat near major feeding areas. Energy prices were higher on increasing fears of Middle East conflicts and economic data that shows the US economy doing well, despite other major economies slowing down. Stocks found support from perceptions that the Fed would be lowering interest rates soon. THIS IS A SOLICITATION. Continued from page 1... of years, Ereaux purchased the enterprise from his employer in the late 1960s and incorporated in 1978. Ezzie’s Wholesale served as a bulk fuel agent for Petrolane, and in 1995 Ezzie’s Wholesale purchased Petrolane and added propane sales to its fuels lineup. In the years of its existence, Ezzie’s Wholesale expanded to include stores not only in Malta, but also Big Sandy, Havre, Chinook, Harlem, Turner, Saco, and Glasgow. Owner Bill Myers noted, “In 1983, we had five employees. Now, there’s over seventy.” The value the company brings to these small towns has been extensive.

Much of Ezzie’s Wholesale history and stories were lost with the passing of its proprietor in 2004, but the company continued to thrive under the management of Lary Poulton and Bill Myers, who purchased the company in 2005. Most recently, Myers became the sole owner upon Poulton’s retirement in 2018. The year of 2019 continues the Ezzie’s Wholesale pattern of growth and commitment to providing the services and products that its customers need. Ezzie’s Wholesale opened the doors on the new facility around Memorial Day, and with a strong foothold in agriculture it is expanding its inventory to include more of the things farmers and ranchers need like haying and harvest equipment – sections, guards, bearings, seals, baler belts – for Hesston, New Holland, Honey Bee and MacDon. There is an expanded lineup of welding tools and supplies to include more abrasives, grinding accessories, cutoff wheels. EnduraPlast slip tanks are available, coming all-in-one with the pump and hoses needed. There are chop saws for stainless, aluminum and masonry. The new store has a 16 foot wall of bins full of nuts and bolts - Grade 5, 8 and metrics from ¼” to 1”. The hydraulic hose options have been expanded, and also offer metal braided steel line up to 2”. Plus, there is

an expanded selection of bulk chains, fasteners, rope and more. Truck parts are in stock including everything from mirrors to brake lines. The automotive and electrical offerings have grown as well – Interstate Batteries are in stock, and AC Delco filters for 1-Ton and down, plus Wix filters for larger trucks and combines. The staff there can also prepare hoses for campers and RVs. There’s now a full lineup of air tools, home and garden, hand tools, and safety gear to include hard hats and masks, in additional to the current fire extinguisher line. And when a customer needs a bit of refreshment while they shop, there is a full section of beverages and snacks available for purchase.

Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer

Let Your Conscience Guide You to a Godly Life When I first met my husband, Dave, I was an emotional mess—hurt and angry because of the physical, emotional and sexual abuse I endured growing up. I was miserable and hard to get along with back then. Also, because that abuse mostly came from my father, I was determined that no man would tell me what to do ever again. You can imagine what it must have been like for Dave to have to deal with me on a daily basis with that attitude. But the one thing he did that ultimately made me want to change was remain stable in his attitude and emotions. As long as I’ve known him, Dave has always been consistently happy, regardless of what was going on. And in the early stage of our marriage, he never let my negative outlook or behavior change his. He was a joyful, godly example of unconditional love in spite of a difficult situation. He consistently exhibited the peace that I desperately wanted in my life. And eventually, my conscience started to bother me about the way I acted. Examine Your Conscience The conscience can be a strong guide in life if it’s influenced by the Holy Spirit. Some people go to church regularly, know the Bible from front to back, and still behave in ways that are not so godly. But when our conscience becomes enlightened by the Holy Spirit, it acts as a sign post or guideline that we can follow with confidence and peace as we’re learning better behavior. The function of the conscience is to correct us or make us feel uneasy when we do something displeasing to God. The Vine’s Greek Dictionary describes the conscience as “a knowing…the faculty by which we apprehend the will of God…that designed to govern a life or that distinguishes the morally good or bad, prompting one to do good rather than bad.” As we become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit, the easier it is for our conscience to guide us on a regular basis.

Follow His Still, Small Voice When we accept Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live in our spirit, and He speaks to our hearts. We hear Him when our conscience begins to nudge us for whatever reason; it may be an uneasiness about something we’ve done or we’re about to do. That’s when we should prayerfully consider whether we’re offending God with our actions. If we choose to disregard that uneasy feeling, we’ll override our conscience, because the Holy Spirit will never force us to obey Him. On the other hand, an overactive conscience isn’t good either. If you feel guilty about every little thing, it’s not the Holy Spirit speaking to you. God does not want us to live with guilt and condemnation. It’s also possible to have a seared, or hardened, conscience, which is dangerous because we’re likely to do or say things that really should bother us, but don’t. And many times, those things cause pain for others around us. Why Me and Not You? The thing about the Holy Spirit’s guidance, or our conscience, is it’s personal. That’s why some people can do things that may bother others. For instance, in Romans 14, it talks about how one person’s faith allowed them to eat certain foods that others felt a conviction about eating. Or some observed special days that others paid no attention to. Today, we might talk about things like smoking, drinking, or going to movies. For example, there are certain types of movies I won’t watch, but I know others who can watch them and not be bothered at all. I also smoked for many years, and even taught a Bible study before I broke that habit. Some people judge these things as terribly sinful, and yet they overeat and gossip about others and see nothing wrong with that behavior. But God sees our heart right where we are and He deals with us individually. That’s exactly why we shouldn’t be judgmental of one another. Let Peace Be Your Guide Yes, there are specific instructions that everyone should follow, such as don’t lie, steal, murder, commit adultery, etc. But as we cultivate a close, personal relationship with Jesus, He will lead us according to His purpose for our lives. We will become more sensitive when the Holy Spirit nudges our conscience and says, I don’t know about that, or, That’s a good idea…do it. And we’ll be confident that we can safely trust our conscience to be our guide. Colossians 3:15 (NIV) says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts….” Peace will always lead us to do what’s right in God’s eyes. I encourage you to pray for personal guidance from the Holy Spirit. Learn to recognize His voice, that nudge in your heart—it’s your conscience. And let others do the same without judgment. You’ll be more like Jesus as your godly conscience grows. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Love of Country I love this country and see opportunity everywhere. My life began on a small ranch in eastern Montana. We droughted out twice over our ten years on Blacktail Creek, and since this was the late ‘50s, we were unaware drought was caused by inadequate taxation and regulation. We just thought it was dry. We moved to the family homestead at the foot of Wyoming’s Big Horns when I was eight. Blizzards and long winters replaced droughts and long summers, again caused by inadequate taxation and regulation. I grew up, married my high school sweetheart, earned my doctorate, opened my veterinary practice, bought the family homestead, raised three children and started my cattle drive business. My three children later married and launched their careers while giving me 18 grandchildren. Here is a snapshot of my American family over this Independence Day. My middle daughter, Chelsie brought her four mini-Warners from the coast. Marcus, her husband, is again deployed to the Gulf and the separation is especially hard on Will, their oldest. Wednesday afternoon Will was lining our driveway with small American flags. He was teary-eyed as he struggled, hand-driving the dowel rod flags into the old roadbed. Whether his tears were from the effort or the emotion is known only to Will. Once done, he stepped back to admire his work when Badger, a retired guest horse, trotted over and pulled a Colin Kaepernick by plucking out several flags. Badger must be Democrat, and this brings me to my point. America is truly an exceptional nation and social justice warriors who claim our republic is inherently racist are dead wrong. Opportunity abounds for all. My ancestors are Irish, so here is my take on this white privilege nonsense: Was it white privilege which taught me the value of a summer job involving bale chaps and hay hooks? Was it white privilege which rolled the trophy wife and her cook crew out of bed at 2:00 in the morning to feed 20 guests breakfast to get them in the saddle a half-hour before daylight? Was it white privilege which taught my children and grandchildren proper work ethic? I think not. Our constitutional republic is the greatest nation in world history contrary to media propagandists, collectivist presidential candidates and coddled, kneeling athletes. Imagine racism in America today had the pro-slavery side, the Democrats, won the Civil War? People are enslaved when you take from them all they have earned, but they are also enslaved when you give them all they have not earned. Dependency disguised as charity is as cruel as chains and shackles. Think about it. Good people? What’s that supposed to mean? Compared to what? Bad people? With the exception of the Hillside Strangler and Jack the Ripper, I’m hesitant to label very many people as “bad.” I’d like to think that nearly everyone is mostly good. Almost all of us want to be moral and responsible. The real problem is not the lack of good people, it is the lack of good systems. Even good people have bad days. Some days are humdingers, some days are ho-hum and some are humbug. Intentionally or not, attitude affects the results people produce. It isn’t realistic to expect good people to produce humdinger results on their humbug days. In the E-Myth revisited, Michael Gerber says that, “People are unmanageable.” That’s why businesses need systems. The system produces the results. It ensures that there are no dropped balls and that every customer has an outstanding experience. In a successful company the outside world is impressed by your people, but those people are consistently impressive because of the systems they use. McDonalds doesn’t succeed because they hire the best and the brightest. They couldn’t afford the best, and the brightest would probably be short-timers, moving on to bigger and better things. McDonalds isn’t successful because of their people, it is successful because of the systems their people use. They have systems for everything: for flipping burgers, for managing inventory, for hiring and terminating employees … for everything. Kathy and I have been running Ranch Management Consultants for 17 years. When we bought the company, we bought a reputation, curriculum and systems for enrolling students and delivering our product. Since then we have improved these systems and added on. I joke that Kathy is the vice president of everything that no one else wants to do. One of those unglamorous jobs is documenting our systems. We have a system for sending information to people who want to know about our programs, for negotiating a contract with a venue where we’d like to do a school and for making sure everything we need to run a school arrives at the venue BEFORE the school begins. We have a system for ProfitTips. In fact, after I write this I’m going to follow that system to make sure y’all get this. I don’t usually do that. ProfitTips is a team effort. I write it, Kathy edits it (which is why they usually make sense) and Sally sends it out. But this time, to “walk our talk,” I’m going use the system that Sally created for sending ProfitTips and do it myself. I don’t have to worry about being an old dog trying to learn a new trick … all I have to worry about is following the step-by-step instructions in the RMC procedures manual. If you’re reading this and it looks okay and arrived on time, our system worked. Good people have good days and bad days. They get hurt, take vacations, and retire (Sally is on a well-deserved vacation right now). If we rely on people to produce consistent results, we make ourselves vulnerable and set ourselves up for problems. We need systems. The system may be a step by step process for sending out an e-newsletter like ProfitTips or sending out a Bull Sale catalog. It may be a checklist for packing school supplies or for deciding if it’s time to move animals from one paddock to another. The system could be the way people are invoiced for the things they buy from you or the way you pay your bills. Without systems, when good people have bad days or leave, you have big problems.

DEAR DAVE, I’ve never hidden debt from my husband, but I do hide money from him on occasion. I don’t hide it for my personal use, but I have been setting money aside for emergencies without his knowledge. He’s not terrible with money, and he works very hard, but he always seems to find something to spend it on. We were never able to save much of anything before I started doing this, but recently I’ve begun to feel bad about doing it. Can you give me some advice? -Penny DEAR PENNY, I’m glad you seem to be re-thinking this strategy. I believe in saving up for emergencies and having an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place. But deception in any form is never a positive thing in a relationship—especially a marriage. I know it won’t be easy, but you have to let him know what you’ve been doing. You also need to make sure you tell him in the right way. Even though your intentions may have been good—getting into better financial shape— you’ve deceived him by doing it the way you did. Make some time for just the two of you. Sit down with him, and let him know what has happened and that you’re sorry for not being completely honest about it all. Explain that the reason you hid the money was that you didn’t want to speak up about how it was being handled in your marriage. Ask him to forgive you, and let him know you won’t do it again, but explain, too, how important it is that the two of you work together on saving more, spending less, and getting control of your finances. Managing money in a marriage is a “we” thing. Decisions should always be made—here’s that word again—together. It means you each have a vote, and it also means you should stand up and vote “no” if he wants to spend money on something silly when you don’t have your financial house in order!

-Dave
