SECURITY GUARD IS CONVICTED FOR MOLESTATION AND MURDER OF ADVOCATE PALLAVI PURKAYASTHA "Two families have been devastated. Death and nothing less than death should be given."

For two years, my and Avik's family have gone through a lot of trauma. I have lost my daughter and would be son-in law.

Right: Pallavi's father, IAS officer Atanu Purkayastha, was the joint Pallavi secretary in Purkayastha the Agriculture Ministry at the Centre when the incident took place. Her mother Sumita is Director General with the Ministry of Telecommunication. Both were present at the court yesterday to hear the verdict and were visibly moved because they had to relive the trauma of their daughter’s murder on August 9, 2012, all over again. They addressed the large media contingent outside the court.

ecurity guard Sajjad Ahmed Mughal (22), accused for molestation and murder of Advocate Pallavi Purkayastha at her Wadala apartment on August 9, 2012, was convicted by sessions court on Monday. Special judge Vrushali Joshi held Ahmed guilty of murder, saying "A case of murder, molestation and criminal trespass has been proved against you," following which the accused silently nodded. The quantum of punishment will be announced on July 3. Ujjwal Nikam, special public prosecutor, told the ADC that circumstantial evidences played an important role in this case. “As there was no direct evidence, we relied on the circumstantial evidences and the chain of circumstances. DNA samples played an important role. Bloodstains of Pallavi were found on Sajjad's trousers. Though he said that the bloodstains were there because he lifted the victim and took her to the ambulance, there were other evidences also. The complaint made by Pallavi to her live-in partner, Avik Sengupta, was an impor-

tant evidence. She had complained that the watchman had been eying her. The lewd comments the watchman made about the victim while talking to his colleague was also strong evidence. We also presented the call details of the victim and the convict.” Speaking about the quantum of punishment, he said, “I haven't decided about it, but most probably we will demand for capital punishment.” On August 9, 2012, Pallavi Purkayastha (25), a legal advisor at Farhan Akhtar's Excel Entertainment, was attacked and murdered in her rented apartment in Himalayan Heights, Wadala. On the fateful night, Pallavi returned home and found that there was no electricity in her house. She called up her partner and informed him about it. Along with the electrician, the convict Sajjad Pathan, who worked as a watchman in the victim's society, entered the flat and stole the keys to the door. He later used those keys to enter the flat. First, he tried to rape the victim, but Continued on pg 8 «

NCP COULD LOSE ‘NATIONAL’ TAG UNFAIR By Suyash Padate

T

Not you, sir! According to them, the CM and the PCC chief are solely responsible for the poll debacle.

By Santia Dudi

he Sharad Pawar led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is likely to be stripped of its national status. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has started a process in this regard after the party's poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections and the decision is expected in next few days. In the meanwhile, the NCP has denied the reports that it is in danger of losing this status following the debacle in the recently concluded elections. About two weeks ago, the ECI had served show-cause notices to the three parties, including the NCP, seeking explanation on why their national party status should not be withdrawn after their rout in the Lok Sabha elections. According to the criteria set by the poll panel, a national party needs to get at least 6 per cent of votes each from mini-

LOSING OTHER FREEBIES

Under the Symbols Order 1968, a party, on losing national status, does not have the right to fight elections using a common symbol across the country. If the decision to derecognise the NCP is implemented, the clock symbol will not be reserved for all party candidates across the country. It can use it only in Maharashtra and states where it is recognized as a state level party. Apart from this, it is as good as losing the national character of the party. Also, the NCP, BSP and CPI will lose facilities like utilising All India Radio and Doordarshan for poll-eve broadcasts and free copies of electoral rolls, which they enjoyed as national parties.

mum four states, or get 2 per cent of total seats in the Lok Sabha from at least three states, or it should be recognised as a state party in at least four states. However, the NCP, along with BSP and CPI, no longer fulfill any of the above conditions. The three parties had time till June 27 to reply to the EC's show-cause notice and seek a hearing. The NCP is a major constituent in the Democratic Front government in the state and is virtually struggling to maintain its national party status. Significantly, if the NCP, BSP and CPI are derecognised, the BJP, Congress and the CPI (M) will be the only political parties in the country that will continue to enjoy the national status. Speaking to reporters, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik denied the possibility of losing the national party status. He said, “The Election Continued on pg 8 «

A report released by the Health and Family Welfare ministry states that respiratory diseases, TB, CVD and cancers create an enormous burden on the national economy Pic for representational purposes only

By A Staff Reporter

A

ccording to a report titled ‘Economic Burden of Tobacco Related diseases in India’ released by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday, tobacco use and the associated costs create an enormous burden for the nation. It has estimated direct and indirect costs from all diseases caused due to tobacco use and four specific diseases namely, respiratory diseases, tuberculosis (TB), cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and cancers. It says that the total economic costs attributable to tobacco use in Maharashtra amounted to Rs 2,290 crore in 2011 for persons aged 3569, of which 62 per cent was direct medical costs and 38 per cent was indirect morbidity costs which include troubles for the family members and loss of manpower on that front. The economic cost for CVD, cancer, TB and respiratory disease amounted to Rs 769 crore. CVD shared the highest economic burden which was Rs 449 crore on account of tobacco use. It was followed by respiratory disease

at Rs 154 crore, TB at Rs 98 crore and cancers at Rs 68 crore. Among the four diseases, CVD contributed the highest at 63 per cent of the total direct medical cost and 51 per cent of the total indirect cost. The economic cost for all diseases due to tobacco use was higher in males except for cancers and tuberculosis which was Rs 35.6 crore as the collective cost in females due to smokeless tobacco was at Rs 70.4 crore. This report was released at an event where a discussion on the current tax structure and the need of raising taxes on tobacco products in the state was done. Sujata Saunik, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Government of Maharashtra, V L Bhimanvar, Joint Commissioner, Sales Tax, Maharashtra, Mahesh Zagade, Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr P C Gupta, Director, Healis and Devika Chadha, Vice President, Salaam Bombay Foundation were present at the event. time much more than the economic taken to make sure that consumpSaunik said, “The loss to life, fam- loss to the tobacco and cigarette in- tion of these products is brought as ilies and emotional trauma is any- dustry. All possible steps should be much as possible.”

According to Chadha, a tax increase that raises prices of tobacco products by 10 per cent is estimated to reduce tobacco consumption by four to five per cent. “Raising taxes on tobacco is a win-win situation. It is good for people’s health and economy. It is time all the concerned departments come together and take stringent steps for tobacco control in the state,” she said. Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, head and neck surgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital, said, “It is believed that increasing taxes does not bring down consumption. It only makes people opt for a cheaper substitute. But this is not true. The product remains the same. Only the quality or the size of the product might differ.” Bhimanwar said, “We are trying our best to address this issue but it is not possible to hike the taxes to 50 per cent over night. It is a process that will take time.” This report which is supported by the World Health Organisation, Country Office for India, has been developed by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI).

MAHARASHTRA BORDERS TO HAVE CHECK-POSTS These will keep a check on the import and export of goods from one state to another, sales tax department officials said By Shwetha Kannan

T

he department of sales tax, Government of Maharashtra, on Monday announced its plan of setting up check-posts on the borders of the state so that it can keep a check on the import and export of goods from state to another and also help bring down instances of tax evasion. It is for the first time that the state will have a mechanism like this. Giving basic details about this project, Vivek Bhimanwar, Joint Commissioner of sales Tax (Policy Matters) said, “The notification has already been issued and we have asked the public and the stakeholders to give their feedback. We expect the feedback to come within a month's time. Then we will start setting the

check-posts phase wise. We are planning to set up around 32 border check-posts. These will have state-of-art infrastructure with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and scanners which will do the necessary checks. Till date, we did not have any such mechanism to keep a check on what is being brought into the state and taken out of the state. So there were cases of people trying to evade taxes. But with the check-posts in place, we expect that numbers of such cases will come down,” said Bhimanwar. When asked if this system will also help catch instances of smuggling products like gutkha, tobacco, tobacco products as well as pan masala in the state of Maharashtra where they are banned, Bhimanwar said, “This is for all products. Till date, only the quantity was checked and taxes were levied but from now on even the content will be of importance. All the necessary checks will be done. Several departments like the transport department, the forest department are involved in this.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Picking up the pieces

Our hearts and our sympathies go out to Atanu and Sumita Purkayastha, parents of Pallavi Purkayastha, the young lawyer murdered by the watchman of her building for resisting her advances more than two years ago. Yesterday at the Sessions Court, where they arrived from Delhi to hear the judgment in the case, they presented such a picture of courage and dignity in very trying circumstances, that even the electronic media, usually baying like a pack of hounds at the very heels of their “prey”, were a bit subdued. Or perhaps it was because the couple made it very clear that they wanted to say nothing, once the judgement was pronounced. Guilty, said the judge, and one more case was wrapped up. Now only the sentencing remains. As does the rest of their lives for not one but two families, for Pallavi's fiance, Avik Sengupta, whose firm testimony in the case subscribed in no small part to the eventual conclusion, himself passed away in hospital last December of a brain-related ailment. He had never recovered from the tragedy of losing his fiance to such a brutal crime.

So, who's listening!

That was a telling comment made by state health minister Suresh Shetty, recently, at an Association

Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), formerly known as Victoria Terminus (VT), currently still often referred to as the same, is getting a facelift, with scaffolding around the clock face and workmen swarming all over to complete the work before the rains set in, hopefully this Sunday. The 19th century railway station is built in Victorian Gothic Revival and includes traditional Indian features, and was opened in 1887, on the Silver Jubilee of Empress Victoria. The rest, eg architect etc. you already know about. What in fact we would like to know about is which railway architect was responsible for the horror at its side and why oh why was it not allowed to go up in smoke last week when a fire broke out on its third floor?? And what is to stop them pulling the whole thing down and re-building? For while we do not expect turrets, gargoyles, sculptures and suchlike, we know that the Government of India can do much better than a soul-less, ugly PWD-type blot on the landscape that is the CR administrative block currently.

At the inauguration of the pure drinking water project for the children of Don Bosco in Matunga, alumni of the 1969 batch line up with (from left) Jayesh Chandran, A V Suresh of Forbes, Wildred D'Souza, rector of Don Bosco, Ranga, ex-MD Wyeth, Dr Suhas Prabhu, Giles D'Souza, ex-director, Forbes, and Bosco D'Mello, principal of the school.

In alumni, riches indeed

What is it about Don Bosco in Matunga that inspires such fervent and undying loyalty among its students, decades after they have left the building? Undoubtedly it must be the sports facilities, particularly the football grounds that keeps them coming back for more and more! Whatever it is, it does the institution itself a lot of good.

03

The latest in a long list of good deeds from past students is that the batch of 1969, comprising, among others, Eureka Forbes CEO A V Suresh from Don Bosco Chennai, and active president of the past pupils member and ad man Jayesh Chandan, along with 63 of their batch mates got together after 43 years and donated the Aqua Pure Water

Project for the school. Nearly 3,500 children will be benefited and that's not all. The company has committed itself for the next ten years to providing clean drinking water for the kids and will also initiate a project with the school for water harvesting and water recycling, making it among the first of its kind completed for the school in India. Once a student, always a past student for Don Bosco, evidently!

of Medical Consultants held in Shamukhananda Hall. Your greed for money is going to make you a hated lot, he is supposed to have declared. And he added, “like education barons”. What then would he have to say about “education barons” who are also doctors running post graduate medical institutions that charge crores of rupees for a single seat? We wonder what it was the good doctor was trying to accomplish? Certainly there is no way the “greedy doctors” of today are going to even begin to listen to him. Come to think of it, there seems to be little objection from the vast hordes who are regularly exploited by the medical profession. One look at our super crowded specialty hospitals should be revealing!

Monorail blues

While Mumbaikars are flocking to the Metro, the Monorail has suddenly become its neglected cousin and is, in fact, generally patronised by the joyride crowd. Naturally, even breaking even is a far cry and profits have become a distant dream. We hear this has adversely impacted the operational staff of the Monorail. Captains, station masters, controllers and technicians, who embarked upon the project with such gusto a bare two months ago, are now a cowed down lot. And one of the main

reasons is that they no longer get those little perks of the job – bottled water, tea, coffee, biscuits, lunch packs. The maintenance of the monorail is with private company Scomi, which has obviously started costcutting in earnest, hitting right where it hurts. And not even three months has elapsed. Like a traffic expert recently put it, “This is what happens when you have bandaids like Metro and Monorail covering the huge wound that is the traffic system in Mumbai”. Oh and one more point. Managers and higher HR officials of Scomi continue to enjoy these freebies. Passenger starved Monorail has decided to starve its staff.

Caution, football joke ahead!

Finally, says a friend, one I haven't heard before:A blonde gets a job as a physical education teacher for 16 - 18 year olds. She notices a boy at the end of the field standing alone, while all the other kids are running around having fun, kicking a football. She takes pity on him and decides to speak to him.'Are you ok?' she asks.'Yes,' he replies.'You can go and play with the other kids, you know,' she says.'It's best I stay here,' he says.'Why's that, sweetie?' asks the blonde. The boy looks at her incredulously and says: "Because I'm the goal keeper!"

Notably, not a single AC I ticket could be booked at the window on Sunday. All AC I tickets were booked on the IRCTC website. Allegedly, an under graduate student of computer science had manipulated the website of Indian Railways (used by railway officials only) to book the tickets. Interestingly, in March this years, the Anti-Tout Squad of Central Railway had arrested K Vishwakarma, a second year student of computer science, from a leading city-based

These reservation tickets were booked from Vapi, Bhakti Nagar and Dahod in Gujarat, Sasaram (in Bihar), IRCTC, CST, Mumbai Central, Bhayandar, Aurangabad, Byculla, Mahim, Talegaon, Borivali and Nashik. In the next three minutes, the waiting list of AC 3 tier rose to 320.

T

he water logging problem in Bandra, Khar and Santacruz is soon expected to disappear as the Gajdharbandh pumping station will be operational by 2016 for which the foundation was laid yesterday by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. Under the Brihan Mumbai Storm Water Disposal System (BRIMSTOWAD) project, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was suppose to construct pumping stations at eight places in the city out of which two pumping stations at Haji Ali and Irla have been operational for the last three years and have provided relief to areas like Tardeo, Nana Chowk, Girgaum, Juhu and Andheri. At the foundation ceremony yesterday, Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray said, “The Gazdarbandh pumping station will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore, and will be operational

After the floods of 2005, the BMC has been struggling to construct pumping stations. The state government had appointed a Fact Finding Committee (Chitale Committee) to examine the reasons behind the flood. The BMC is expected to begin work on the pumping stations at Britannia (Ray Road) soon, whereas, the pumping stations at Love Grove (Worli) and Cleveland (Worli) are presently under construction. by 2016 which will be a great relief to the people living in Bandra, Khar and Santacruz.” Thackeray also urged the people to use water economically and added, “As the city has still not witnessed monsoon, the city lakes have water which will last only till July 31. There is a possibility that the people will have to face a 20 per cent water cut off till a solution to the water shortage is found.” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

aimunnisa Asif Khan, a 44 year old teacher of MES Urdu High School in Kurla West, was assaulted allegedly by the headmaster and supervisor on June 21 inside the headmaster’s office, so severely that she received injuries on her head and her stomach as well as internal injuries. According to her, she spent 40 hours unconscious and woke up in KEM Hospital. Medical reports corroborate her claim. However, till date, no arrests have been made. Senior Police Inspector, Subhash Raut of the Vinoba Bhave Nagar Police Station, had this to say to the ADC. “An FIR has been lodged under IPC 354, 323, 504, 509, 506(II) and 34 against the headmaster and supervisor. One (Husain) has already got the anticipatory bail and we are searching for the other (Kazi) accused. In the past there were written complaints by both the parties against each other.” Khan is a senior Geometry teacher and has been teaching in the school for the last 18 years. She is duly accredited with the Vashi Board. Talking to the ADC in KEM Hospital, the teacher has stated that on June 18, the headmaster, Muzaffar Husain, along with supervisor Shaishta Kazi and a teacher Fariha Usmani, threatened to kill her and her family if she did not agree to be a witness in an earlier case against a teacher of the school. She alleged that they also made obscene remarks about her character. “At the time, I immediately informed my husband and called 100 and told the police about the threat. I was later called into the headmaster’s cabin where two police officials had arrived. The officers then started to shout at me and asked me not to call 100, while

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 1, 2014 Continued from pg 1 « colleges. But as the Mumbai colleges feel that they will be at a loss if the students move to other colleges, they have hit upon a strategy which will prevent their students from going to other colleges. Instead of giving the students their original mark sheets they are handing over only xerox copies. Now xerox copies of the mark sheets will not be accepted by other colleges so the students have to remain in the same colleges concerned. The deprived students have reported the matter to Mumbai University's students' grievance cell. As per the MU rules, once a student takes admission in a college, he has to deposit his Std.12 HSC mark sheet, along with the school leaving certificate in the college. If the student wishes to change the college in the second or third year, he/ she has to be given then the college has to issue him a relieving or leaving certificate along with all the documents submitted by the student during admission. Last week, the students' greviance cell received a few cases wherin in which students had applied to change their college in the third year. But as the college issued all the students just a xerox copy of their

UNFAIR

original mark sheet, they were not able to take admission in another college of their choice. As per rules, if a student is unable to submit his original mark sheet, the college should not consider his admission. A student from a Jogeshwari based college, who did not wish to be named, told the ADC that he had lodged a complaint with the grievance cell. “As I was unhappy with the teaching methods followed by the faculty, I applied in another college for admission in the second year degree course. When I asked my col-

lege for the mark sheet which I had to submit to that college, I was given only a xerox copy of the mark sheet which, I was told. Will be issue .issued me a xeroxed copy stating that the original marksheet will be given in the month of August. But then it will not be of any use to me since lectures already begin by June in all colleges. This is unfair, the college is just playing tricks with us to prevent us from joining another college. The admission procedure for the second and third year degree college starts by the month of May and ends latest by the first week of June. If a student is unable to change the college during this period, then the admissions process is closed and no student can take admission after the lectures begin. Pradeep Sawant, senate and students greviance cell member, MU, tod the ADC: "Colleges across the city have been playing such tricks with students so that they cannot take admission in another college and stay with the same college. This is illegal and colleges have to hand over the original mark sheets to the students. On the other hand, students should not fear and report the matter to MU. These colleges will be punished. The names of the students will be kept secret and strong action will be taken against such colleges."

ith the assembly elections barely a few months away, leader of opposition in legislative council Vinod Tawde managed to split the Congress party in Sindhudurg district which is dominated by Minister for Industries Narayan Rane. Speaking to newspersons at the state party office yesterday, Mohan Kalsekar, former Congressman from Sind-

Tawde on the other hand argued that the entry of Rane supporters into the BJP fold was aimed at bolstering the party strength in Kankavli assembly constituency of the district. The leader of opposition in legislative council stated that party MLA Pramod Jathar had won the Kankavli seat by a narrow margin of just 34

Ponder awhile... “Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Plan for I President’s rule in UP? T

HE Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to be quite happy that the law and order situation is deteriorating in Uttar Pradesh. It looks like it has a plan to seize power in the state. With rape victims hung from trees, with cops not registering FIRs, with ministers and MLAs making provocative statements, a perception has grown that there is something gravely wrong with the way the state is run. The administration is under attack. People appear to be quite fed up with the Samajwadi Party (SP). If this were not so, the BJP would not have got as many as 71 seats out of 80 in the Lok Sabha elections. The voters swing away from the SP is clearly seen. It is evident that the BJP wants to cash in on the sympathy wave. If there is an election in Uttar Pradesh now, the BJP will definitely come to power. The days of Samajwadi Party is over. It is possible that the BJP is trying to get President's rule in the state and later on the Assembly elections. Its party workers have been holding violent protests in Lucknow for the last few days. Water cannons have been used, the protesters have been tear-gassed and lathi-charged. The protest is against the absence of law and order in the state. The plan is to first get President's rule and then the Assembly elections. Mayawati's BSP also will no longer be a challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Mayawati must have got the shock of her life when she could not get even a single seat in the Lok Sabha polls. It is not by chance or magic that the BJP got almost all the seats in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP's 'struggle' in Uttar Pradesh must have got the blessings of party leaders. It seems to be a well-orchestrated move to bring about Assembly elections as soon as possible.

am convinced that the Narendra Modi government is guided, if not goaded, by the Hindi chauvinists. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has several liberal leaders who realize that the pace of switch over to Hindi would have to be slow, keeping in mind unity in diversity. Apparently, they do not have much say. Within the very first fortnight of the Modi’s regime, the central government offices have received a circular that Hindi should be used on social media. This is an entrance through the backdoor. Non-Hindi speaking states spotted the fugitive move and protested against it. New Delhi readily withdrew its step and declared that the circular was meant for the Hindi-speaking states.

I wish this bilingualism should have continued without anyone tinkering with it. But then the Modi’s men were in a hurry. They wanted to restrict the use of English to certain fields. This was conceded by the Parliamentary Committee on Language Commission, although the committee gave Hindi the status of principal language and additional language status to English. The purpose of my narration is that the status quo should continue until the nation can have a consensus on some other formula. This means that the push currently given to Hindi will have to take into consideration the feelings and aspirations of each area and assure that there is no alienation of any language of any linguistic community. ‘Thoughts are forces, but they don’t belong to you’ W

HEN I say a thought is a thing, what do I mean? I mean that you can throw your thought just like a thing. You can hit somebody's head with a thought just like a thing. You can kill a person through a thought just as you can throw a dagger. You can give your thought as a gift, or as an infection. Thoughts are things, they are forces, but they don't belong to you. They come to you; they abide for a while and then they leave you. The whole universe is filled with thoughts and things. Things are just the physical part of thoughts, and thoughts are the mental part of things. Because of this fact, many miracles happen -- because thoughts are things. If a person continuously thinks about you and your welfare, it will happen -- because he is throwing a force at you. That's why blessings are useful, helpful. If you can be blessed by someone who has attained no-mind, the blessing is

going to be true -- because a man who never uses thought accumulates thought energy, so whatsoever he says is going to be true. In all the Eastern traditions, before a person starts learning no-mind, there are techniques and much emphasis that he should stop being negative, because if you once attain to no-mind and your trend remains negative,

MATTER & SPIRIT you can become a dangerous force. Before the no-mind is attained, one should become absolutely positive. That is the whole difference between white and black magic. Black magic is nothing more than when a man has accumulated thought energy without throwing out his negativity beforehand. And white magic is nothing more than when a man has attained too much thought energy,

and has based his total being on a positive attitude. The same energy with negativity becomes black; the same energy with positivity becomes white. A thought is a force, a thing. This will be the third insight. It has to be understood and watched within yourself. Sometimes it happens that you see your thought functioning as a thing, but just because of too much conditioning of materialism you think this may be just a coincidence. You neglect the fact, you simply don't give any attention to it; you remain indifferent, you forget about it. But many times you know that sometimes you were thinking about the death of a certain person -- and he is dead. You think it is just a coincidence. Sometime you were thinking about a friend and a desire arose in you that it would be good if he comes -- and he is on the door, knocking. You think it is a coincidence. It is not coincidence. In fact, there is nothing like coincidence, everything has its causality. — Osho

Apology This is with respect to the article ‘After Ness, its Nusli’ (ADC, June 30. The article is not only devoid of facts, but also tends to mislead the readers through the headline. The headline ‘After Ness, its Nusli’ tends to give an impression that Ness has done something wrong and so has his father now. Also, the fact is that the deposition was not to happen today. (June 30). It is totally unexpected from a news publication of repute to do an article with a sensational headline, which is false and the content is unsubstantiated. The NDA has not been able to contain food inflation at all and green peas are selling at Rs.120/kg and sugar, Rs.50/kg. It is a well-known fact that massive hoarding by traders takes place nonchalantly and it is intriguing why no action has been taken against anyone in this regard. WHILST I am thrilled that Brazil has got through to the quarterfinals of FIFA by defeating Chile on June 28, the fact is that Brazil barely scraped through to victory with a marginal one-goal lead in the penalty shootout. Quite literally, Brazil won this match by the skin of its teeth. Having lived in Brazil for some years, I see the Brazilian team as my team and support it strongly. Nevertheless, the Brazilian team lacked strategy and a game-plan. Throughout the game, Brazil was on the defensive. rods and spirals. They inhabit soil, water, acidic hot springs, radioactive waste and also live in symbiotic and parasitic relationships with plants and animals. Many bacteria have self-propelled motion which is described as motility. Swimming bacteria frequently move nearly 10 body lengths per second and a few as fast as 100. This makes them at least as fast as fish, on a relative scale.

achin Lokapure, a 27-year-old pharmacy graduate from nondescript Miraj Town in Sangli district, has devised an apparatus for bacterial movement detection, with great amount of dedication and hard work. His work has also been certified by the Controller General of Patients and Trade Marks. Bacteria constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms. Bacteria have a number of shapes, ranging from spheres to The apparatus, called a motilo-

scope, (which comes with a sample holder) is used for bacterial movement detection. In the disc type sample holder, a small drop of bacterial suspension or fluid culture coated with viscous oil (paraffin oil) is dropped. The paraffin oil is added to keep the drop of fluid culture or bacterial suspension at the centre of the disc. This sample holder is then kept in the motiloscope. A motiloscope is used for observation of bacterial motility, and its size and shape too. Since the time of observation for different species of bacteria differs, the device is used for identification and classification of different species of bacteria, and ensures that no drop of bacterial suspension falls down. This method is an advanced method compared to earlier methods of observing bacterial motility with illuminated microscope of ex-

Techie Held for Harassing Girl Using Fake FB Profile Had targeted more female batchmates to avenge humiliation heaped on him during his college days By Suresh Golani

A

22-year-old engineer working with a private company landed behind bars on charges of harassing his former college colleague by posting objectionable material on her Facebook account. According to the police the accused identified as-Aaron Furtado (22) created a fake profile account on Facebook and started posting all types of vulgar expletives and objectionable material in the message box of the complainant. Upset over the harassment, the girl blocked the ID but her troubles did not stop here as Furtado continued repeating his acts by creating multiple fake profiles. Unable to bear the nuisance, the girl registered a complaint at the Vasaigaon police station. “Acting on her complaint, we referred the matter to our Cyber Cell which browsed

through several portals and finally zeroed in on the service provider, which helped them trace the sender’s IP address who turned out to be Furtado.” confirmed, IPS officer Maheshwar Reddy who currently is the in-charge of Vasaigaon police station. In his confessional statement, Furtado admitted to his crime which he says to have committed to avenge his insult by the complainant and other female batch-mates during college days. “There is a strong possibility that Arun may have tried this revenge formula on other girls as well.” said an officer. Booked under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act, for electronically transmitting offensive messages, Arun managed to secure bail after spending three days in police custody. Further investigations are on.

Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry tell you a little bit about the symptoms of different diseases that can affect your body. Read on to find what they are and how to maintain good overall health

W

hile you may know how to cure a niggling headache and are more than familiar with a bad stomach cramp, you may be dismissing the signs that your body is giving you as minor aches and pains — nothing that a pill can’t cure. However, though these go unnoticed, they could often be indicators of more serious ailments. We don’t mean to scare you, but even a recurring migraine could be a sign of a serious disease. So, read on as we tell you how to stay healthy from head to toe and protect yourself from common diseases (and learn their symptoms), that can affect your health.

all in the mind A balanced diet is the key to maintaining a healthy brain. Include foods such as meat, walnuts, crabs, broccoli, garbanzo beans and berries in your diet, as they improve blood flow to your brain, help keep symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease at bay, boost focus and sharpen your mind. Antioxidant-rich foods such as berries ensure that your brain is stress-free and help you think clearly, while healing your brain. Also, keep yourself engaged with activities, both physical and mental (especially as you grow older), to ensure that your brain stays active. Also, make sure that you keep your stress levels under control; play sports and indulge in hobbies that relax you to avoid the unnecessary burden of a stressed mind.

heart of the matter Keeping your heart healthy isn’t that complicated. Apart from eating healthy meals, which include small amounts of good fats and good cholesterol, avoid smoking and drinking excessively. Exercise in moderation and ensure that you aren’t stressed, because stress has a direct impact on your heart. In fact, experts suggest engaging in activities such as knitting and weaving, as they help you relax. Also, make sure that you do things that make you happy, such as pursuing a

& ) + +!' $ %&' +

hobby or engaging in a craft, since your emotional stability is deeply linked to how healthy your heart is. A diet that includes omega-3 acids (fish), nuts such as almonds, chocolate and wine (in moderation), will help keep your heart healthy.

breathe in Apart from the obvious advice to quit smoking — a habit that is literally eating up your lungs as we speak, make sure that you do all you can to avoid areas that are heavily polluted. While you can’t control the level of pollution outside your home, make sure that your lungs aren’t getting affected by indoor air pollution (read our article on Page 19 to learn how to reduce indoor pollution). Also, ensure that you exercise regularly and constantly push yourself to work harder, as this helps improve your lung power and strengthens your organs. To keep your lungs healthy, ensure that your diet includes a balance of carbohydrates, small amounts of fat and fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, which are proven to maintain lung health and can even help prevent lung cancer.

belly up If good lung health isn’t reason enough to quit smoking, you should know that the nasty habit can harm your stomach as well. It weakens the muscles that control the lower part of your oesophagus. When this muscle is weakened, acids from your stomach travel up the oesophagus in the wrong direction and cause what is known as acid reflux. Reflux, in turn, causes peptic ulcers, heartburn and bowel inflammation. Apart from giving up smoking, make sure that you exercise regularly, because being overweight also increases pressure on your stomach and can cause heartburn and acidity. Eat small meals at regular intervals, avoid too much spice, salt or oil and drink lots of water, which will help aid digestion and keep the strain off your stomach.

>> Simple exercises such as jogging go a long way in keeping your whole body healthy and fit

Kidney story Your kidneys do your body a great service by filtering almost 200 litres of blood every day, absorbing nutrients from fluids, eliminating toxic waste and regulating your body’s fluid levels. Take good care of them by living a healthy, balanced life. The less junk food you consume, the lighter load there will be on your kidneys to separate the nutrients from the toxins. Eat foods that are cleansing, such as cabbage, grapes, red bell peppers and egg whites, as they aid your kidneys’ functions. Also, consume smaller quantities of sodium, minerals and salt, so that your kidneys don’t have to work too hard to filter them out.

so bony To keep your joints healthy, make sure that you maintain an ideal weight. Losing as little as 4kg will lower the stress on your joints and allow them to move smoothly. You should also exercise and ensure that you stretch before and after working out, to make sure that your joints don’t snap under sudden pressure. Also, wear good shoes, because shoes that are made badly or have a high heel, put a lot of pressure on your bones and joints. Apart from drinking milk, you must include foods such as cheese, broccoli, sardines and turnips for an extra boost of calcium, that will ensure strong bones.

« Know more expensive food tastes better

>> While honey has more nutritional benefits than sugar, it is higher in calories. Take a look at the differences between the two

Yamini Walia tells you about a recent study, conducted by Cornell University, that found out why people think that a meal tastes better when it’s expensive

H

So Sweet! You may think that honey is healthier than sugar, but the debate is far from over. Take a look at some of the facts before you make a decision, says Shirley Mistry

E

veryone seems to be switching to honey, thinking that it is a healthier alternative to sugar in cakes, desserts, drinks and tea or coffee. The basic premise for this lifestyle change is based on the theory that honey is healthier than sugar. Take a look at how the two ingredients fare in terms of factors such as calorific value and whether the two are starkly different.

Calorie CounT A teaspoon of honey contains 22 calories, while one teaspoon of sugar contains 16 calories. So, it won’t make much of a difference to use honey if your consumption is restricted to a spoon or two in your tea. But, if you are fond of desserts and prefer your beverages sweet, you are better off using sugar, rather than honey.

STorage of faT Sugar is made up of 50% glucose and 50% fructose. Your body draws its energy from glucose and finds it easy to break down fructose, leading to a surge in your blood sugar levels. As a result, your body uses only the amount of sugar that it requires, and stores the rest of it as fat. On the other hand, honey is made up of roughly 30% glucose and less than 40% fructose. It also contains around 20 other sugars and fibre. This means that your body spends more energy trying to

The finer prinT

While honey beats sugar by a very small margin, once sugar enters your bloodstream (in any form), your body can’t tell the difference between the two. So, you can consume any kind of sugar, but make sure you do this in small amounts. Here’s how you can reduce your intake of sugar. l Switch from regular tea and coffee, to green tea, as it is more palatable if you are consuming it without sugar. l Instead of adding sugar to your cereal, add a few raisins to it, as they improve eye and dental health as well as bone density. l Instead of using corn syrup or golden syrup in your baking, substitute it with agave, a natural sweetener that is a healthier alternative. l If you are planning on switching from sugar to sugar substitutes, avoid ones that contain

break these elements down into glucose and you end up storing a lower quantity of honey as fat in your body. However, the fructose and complex sugars that are present in honey are believed to drain minerals from your body and can also lead to problems such as obesity, heart problems and liver diseases.

nuTrienTS Honey contains antioxidants (in a minute quantity when compared to antioxidant-rich foods such as blueberries and avocados) and also

aspartame as they can damage your eyesight, cause migraines, dizziness, insomnia, depression and even result in death. Opt for Stevia instead, a naturally sweet, healthy plant, that does not have the bitter after-taste that most artificial sweeteners do. l Cut out condiments such as ketchup from your diet. They are packed with refined sugar and are extremely unhealthy. l Fruit yoghurt may seem like a healthy snack, but it contains large amounts of sugar, so opt for natural yoghurt instead. l Chewing on gum is believed to be a popular way to curb hunger pangs, but the sugar in them is lethal. Opt for a sugar-free snack bar instead. It will keep you full for longer and doesn’t contain heaps of processed sugar. l Lay off jams, juices that come in tetra-packs, frosty cereals, packaged sauces and beverages, as they are all saturated with sugar!

ave you ever wondered why expensive food tastes so much better? It doesn’t always boil down to being because the food is better quality.! According to a recent study by the scientists at Cornell University in New York, people enjoy expensive food more than cheaper food, purely because of its price. The scientists at the university studied the eating habits of 139 people enjoying an Italian buffet in an up-state restaurant. The price of the food was set by the researchers at either $4 (`240) or $8 (`480) for the all-you-can-eat meal. The customers were then asked to rate the taste of the food and the quality of the restaurant. The experiment revealed that the people who paid $8 (`480) for the food enjoyed their meal 11% more than those who ate the cheaper buffet and surprisingly, those who paid for the $4 (`240) buffet said that they felt guiltier about filing up their plates, thinking that they over ate. However, the scientists explained that both groups actually ate the same amount of food. Researcher, Ozge Sigirci, explained at the Experimental Biology Meeting, “If the food is on the plate, you are going to eat it, but the pricing affects how you are going to feel about your meal and how you will evaluate the restaurant.” The researchers found that a price cut can actually affect the reputation of a restaurant, as people tend to associate the quality of the food with the price of the meals. So, a lower price implies lower quality and a higher price implies better quality in the consumer’s minds. Not just this, the consumers also feel that their meal is less worthwhile, if it’s less expensive. The results also apply to the consumption of wine, as people prefer to buy expensive wine and appreciate it more than the cheaper option on the menu. So, you now know why so many restaurants mark up the price of their second cheapest wine!

contains zinc and other minerals that bees may pick up on the way, before they deposit honey. Sugar on the other hand, contains no such nutritional benefits.

healTh BenefiTS Apart from providing you with antioxidants, honey is known to cure a common cold, cough and even improve your immunity when it is consumed on a daily basis. It is also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and contains flavanoids, which reduce the risk of certain cancers.

The trainers are attentive, design new workouts and help you out with tips and warnings. This ensures that you achieve your goals, without injuring yourself. At the same time, read our points to make sure that you aren’t getting distracted while working out.

hese points will help you see how your gym might be interfering with your workout.Keep them in mind the next time you’re exercising at your gym: unable to focus Unable to focus at work? Maybe all you need, is to take your lunch break! Very often, people don’t realise that their inability to concentrate at work occurs because they are hungry.

Are the handlebars and seats of the exercise equipment always damp with sweat, with no one to clean it up? a. Yes. b. No.

mostly as We think it’s time to throw in the towel — but only so that you can join another gym as soon as possible. Your gym is overcrowded, your trainers are anything but proactive and you’re so distracted by your friends, the sight of food and drink and the music they play, that your workout is suffering. This could also mean that when you do manage to work out, you’re doing so incorrectly, because your trainers are inattentive. You need to either quit your gym or read our tips below, to ensure that your workout doesn’t take a beating.

out of sigHt, out of minD

Dizzy Darling If you feel dizzy and like you’re going to faint — eat something! Drinking water when you feel faint is important, but lack of food is the most probable cause of dizziness.

cramping up While several women often confuse this symptom with that time of the month and others see it as a sure-shot sign of being dehydrated, what’s surprising about cramps is that they often occur when your body needs a dose of nutrition.

feeling empty Feeling empty is one of the most common signs of hunger. If your stomach feels like it’s an empty pit, you need to eat before you start feeling faint or dizzy.

G

yms are a place where you focus on getting the most out of your workout. But, for a variety of reasons, you sometimes pay more attention to everything around you, except what you enrolled for. We’re not blaming you, because your gym might actually be the guilty party here! If you think that your gym is an impediment to your workout, take this quiz to see whether you need to change your workout habits, or your gym.

From workout buddies, to a café near your workout station, there are several ways to get distracted while you’re running on the treadmill. It’s great to have friends, but keep your interactions to a bare minimum while you work on your fitness and make sure that you exercise away from any food or drink temptation, especially if your gym has its own café. Even though it serves healthy food and drinks, it might make you want to stop exercising and relax for a while.

surrounDings matter Overcrowded gyms and mellow music will end up frustrating you and you won’t feel like working out at all. Carry a music player/ iPod along with you to ensure that you have a playlist of motivating, up-beat tracks to exercise to. If your gym is always crowded, either switch your schedule or start looking for a new gym.

>> If you aren’t happy with your workout, it’s time to switch to another gym

>> A good trainer will always motivate you to work harder in the gym

maintaining Hygiene When you think about how many people use the gym equipment every day, you won’t be surprised to find that you can contract diseases and viruses if your gym doesn’t maintain good hygiene. So, it is important that the machines are periodically cleaned and the showers and sauna are routinely disinfected. This is not a factor that most people consider while choosing a gym, but it is an important thing to keep in mind. If you think that your gym doesn’t maintain good hygiene, switch to a new one immediately!

gooD trainers We can’t stress enough on how important it is that your gym has knowledgeable and proactive trainers. Not only should these trainers point out where you might be going wrong, they should also be able to come up with new and challenging workouts so that you don’t lose your enthusiasm to workout. Also, when you slack off, it is important that a trainer notices and motivates you to continue your exercise. If the trainers at your current gym simply stand around in a corner, you really need to find a better gym.

Gym Sabbatical If you are used to going to the gym or working out relentlessly every day, a sabbatical can be quite unnerving. Here’s what to do when you know that you’re not going to be able to go to the gym, says Shirley Mistry >> Instead of spending hours watching television because you can’t go to the gym, follow our tips to stay healthy

Y

ou may be regimental when it comes to working out on a daily basis, but a bout of flu, an injury or just a hectic week at work is all it takes to disturb your gym schedule. But, being unable to work out doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t continue to keep your mental and physical health in perfect shape. Read on to find out how to stay fit both on the inside and out, when you can’t go to the gym.

Tank up on Tea Green tea works wonders for your health. From antioxidants and cancer-curing flavanoids, to compounds that help ease digestion and soothe a cold, it contains a bundle of benefits in a cup. Apart from keeping you healthy, it also calms and relaxes you, eases mild pain and discomfort and loads you with energy. It does not contain excessive doses of caffeine, is light on your stomach and hardly contains any calories. So, sip on 2-3 cups of tea every day if you can’t go the gym and rest assured that you are boosting your health.

The LisT Maker Since you can’t go the gym (either because you are caught up at work or because your knee injury won’t allow you to do push-ups), make a list of all the other things that you have to do and strike them off, one after the other, as soon as you complete them. Not only will this make you feel accomplished and energised in the same way that a workout does, it will also help you focus better. And, as we all know, apart from staying physically fit, heightened focus is another great benefit of working out regularly.

sLeep weLL Just because you are unwell or have been working overtime, it doesn’t mean that you can afford to compromise on your sleep. Get a minimum of six hours of sleep every night, in order to feel refreshed and energised. If you need help sleeping, sip on some green tea or lavender tea to calm your frazzled nerves before bedtime. Not only will sleeping

nkle injuries are extremely common, but you don’t have to stop exercising to prevent them. In fact, if you are injured, this is more of a reason to strengthen your joints! Stronger ankles are an advantage even if you are just sprinting, or running on a level surface, since the muscles that drive you to move forward pass through your ankles. Make sure that you keep the following tips in mind: If your ankle injury includes a torn ligament, you should work with a physical therapist or your personal trainer before you begin exercising. This will ensure that you are exercising correctly, without aggravating your injury.

l

l

However, if your injury is an old sprain, you can do some

strengthening exercises on your own, such as calf raises and other regular, balanced exercises. Your ankle needs to be well-balanced, so concentrate on one-legged exercises such as standing on one leg for as long as you can, or standing on one leg and stretching your hands outwards. Hold this position and rotate your upper body as far as you can one way, and then the other.

l

Perform these exercises regularly for best results and, in no time, you will get considerable relief from pains arising from old sprains and injuries.

l

Now that you know how to keep your ankles strong, follow these tips consistently to be injury-proof in no time.

>> Calf raises are a great way to boost ankle strength

well clear your mind, it will also help restore your spent energy reserves and give you the mental and physical strength that you need to face the next day with ease. Remember that skipping your daily workout at the gym doesn’t mean that you have a free pass to stay up all night watching episode after episode of your favourite sitcom!

sLow and sTeady It may be tempting to scarf down a cheeseburger with a side of fries and a soda for lunch because you are on a workout break, but muster up all your willpower and refrain from doing so! Since you aren’t working out, you should be extra careful about what you eat. In fact, it is better to eat healthy food and ensure that you chew slowly while you’re on a break from the gym. This way, your body is able to digest food and absorb nutrients better and you aren’t going to end up in a food coma, just because you overate.

skin safe Just like your skin sports a healthy glow almost instantly after an hour at the gym, it is also the first place that you’ll notice signs of dryness, lethargy and dullness. So, make sure that you don’t slip up on exfoliation and moisturisation, even if you aren’t heading to the gym.

waTer baby When you work out, or follow your regular schedule, your water consumption is regularised and on track with the amount of water that you should be consuming every day. However, when you are extremely stressed or unwell, you may forget to drink enough water. Since it plays a big part in helping with digestion and keeps you hydrated, not drinking enough will cause problems such as dizziness and crankiness. So, make sure that you guzzle a glass of water whenever you have a free moment. If you have trouble remembering, use one of the several free mobile applications that exist, which will set reminders for you.

Breathe it in Are you worried about the air outdoors? The air inside your home could be equally polluted, so work on cleaning up the quality of air indoors first, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

W

l

The polluTion problem

l

hile most of us avoid visiting construction sites and walk around with handkerchiefs stuck to our noses to prevent pollution, smog and dust from making us ill, we rarely do the same at home. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are 4.3 million people, worldwide, who die due to household (indoor) air pollution every year! Take a look at what this is and how you can keep your home wellventilated and the quality of your air clean.

Although you’re better off if your home is well-ventilated and you don’t have an open kitchen, the WHO found that three billion people cook and heat their homes using solid fuels — which include wood, charcoal and crop wastes. These emit fumes that have several health hazards and pollutants. But, even if you’ve got a modern cooking range, you could still be at risk due to pollutants that are present in most homes, including mold, dust and grime. If you smoke at home, the fumes collect in your furnishings, leading to third-hand smoke, which is carcinogenic and can damage your health. Paints and cleaners that include benzene and methylene chloride also pollute the air. Pesticides and paint add to the problem, but since these aren’t used as regularly, they are easier to avoid. Last, but not least (and we’re sure you’re already aware of this), using asbestos in your home is one of the quickest ways to be severely affected by indoor air pollution.

improve your air qualiTy While cooking and cleaning are not things that you can avoid, there are several ways to keep your home clean and the quality of your air fresh, so that the risk of indoor pollution is reduced. Here are a few quick tips: Use a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the dust and allergens that can accumulate in your home. Also, remember that chemicals can mix with dust and stay in your room for ages, so keeping your floors and walls clean is of utmost importance.

l

Just sweeping or vacuuming isn’t enough, because this leaves a layer of dust behind. So, it’s important to mop your floors with water every day. Use cleaners only when you absolutely need to.

l

Keeping a floor mat outside your door is a very good idea because it keeps dirt from spreading through your house when people enter. Dirt that lies on the floor causes indoor air pollution.

l

Make sure that the moisture in your home is not high. Use a dehumidifier (to control allergens) if the level increases. Indoor air pollution increases in rooms that have a high level of humidity.

l

Make sure your home is well ventilated and if you have house plants, never water them too much. The excess moisture is a breeding ground for indoor air pollutants!

l

Keep mold away and also remember never to dry clothes inside your house. If you don’t

l

>> Ensure that you clean up the air inside your home to protect yourself from indoor air pollution!

have an airing balcony, dry them outside your window to prevent moisture from collecting inside your house. Use natural air fresheners. Chemical-based air fresheners are the worst culprits when it comes to indoor air pollution, so make sure you use natural products, even when it comes to laundry and bathroom scents. If you absolutely must use a store-bought one, make sure that it is extremely mild and read the labels carefully. Let a little air in! Keeping your windows open prevents chemicals and allergens that household devices and cleaning agents emit from building up inside your home.

E-cigarettes were once promoted as a healthier way to quit smoking. However, they have recently been criticised heavily, with several countries mulling a ban because of their apparent health risks. Dev Goswami tells you more

E

-cigarettes have been quite the rage for years now. Since they contain nothing but nicotine vapour, they were once considered to be an easy way out for smokers who wanted to quit, but needed to feel as though they were still smoking. Also, since they do not contain any of the 4,000 chemicals that are present in cigarette smoke, e-cigarettes were also considered to be safe from the risks associated with second-hand smoking. However, several countries are now contemplating a partial or complete ban on them after serious concerns over their safety have been raised. Read on as we tell you whether you should be opting for e-cigarettes to quit smoking or staying far away from them.

are They safe? Let’s answer this question first. Are they safe? Theoretically, yes. Dr. Samir Garde, consulting pulmonologist, from Hinduja Healthcare Surgical, Khar, explains, “E-cigarettes don’t have the 4,000 odd chemicals that are present in normal cigarettes. So, you can say that they are less harmful than cigarettes.” However, you need to understand that they do not solve the problem of addiction — which is the root cause of smoking. You will just end up being addicted to the e-cigarettes. And addiction, Dr. Samir tells us, brings with it the risk of substance abuse, as you might be tempted to feel a stronger ‘kick.’ Apart from that, addiction can wreck havoc with your personal life and there is also the risk that you’ll go back to smoking normal cigarettes if you find the effects of e-cigarettes unsatisfying.

so whaT do you do? Should you pick e-cigarettes to kick your smoking habit? “Absolutely not!” says Dr. Samir. He adds that if you want to quit smoking there are only three things that will help — counselling (on the extremely harmful effects of smoking), nicotine gums or patches (though Dr. Samir tells us that he doesn’t willingly recommend them) and medication or drugs that have a partial nicotine-like effect, but will help you get over your addiction. And willpower, is obviously one of the most important factors. So, while e-cigarettes might sound less harmful and seem like a great way to quit smoking, they are not. Visiting a doctor and asking for help is a better idea.

dear Barbara, I recently burned my hand while doing household chores. Unfortunately, by the time I could apply anything on the burn, it had already starting scarring. I waited for a week, hoping that it would fade away gradually, but I see no improvement. Is there anything that I can do now? — neha mehta, malad dear neha, Burns that are contracted while performing household chores are extremely common and easy to treat. So, to try and remove the scar that your burn has left behind, apply tomato and cucumber juice on it and alternate it with potato skins, to keep the area moisturised. You can also apply almond oil on the affected area, as it helps reduce stretch marks and scars. If you don’t notice any significant results in two or three weeks, visit a dermatologist who will prescribe a medicated cream to lighten the discolouration.

Stay abreaSt Breast care is usually associated with good health or preventing breast cancer. However, do you know how to take care of the sensitive skin on your chest? Yamini Walia tells you more

hen you mention breasts and health in the same sentence, you’d think that we were talking about lumps. However, it’s extremely important to take care of the skin on your chest as well. Using the wrong type of soap, exfoliating too often and bad hygiene can cause diseases, discomfort and rashes. Read on as we give you the low-down on breast care.

W

need to exfoliate regularly in order to stimulate cell renewal and boost blood circulation. If you do develop rashes on your breasts, scrub the area with wet palms. Use an exfoliating scrub on the affected area, but be very gentle in order to avoid abrasion. Rinse the scrub off your skin. Repeat this exfoliation process once, every two days until the rash is gone.

Why is it important?

things to avoid

Most of us are not aware of breast care, because it’s not a subject that is widely discussed. Beauty expert, Shahnaz Hussain, tells us, “Breasts undergo changes during the different stages of a woman’s life, right from puberty and motherhood, to lactation and ageing. Your breasts consist mainly of glandula and fatty tissue, with no muscle. As a result, they should be protected by proper support and exercise.”

Certain types of sunscreen, soap and lotion can cause irritation and rashes on your breasts. Since it is an extremely sensitive area, just 15 minutes of exposure to the sun can cause allergic reactions and rashes. Also, steer clear of synthetic fabrics, especially during humid weather. Wear bras that provide your breasts with proper support. Shahnaz adds, “Medicated soaps help if you have a rash. Otherwise, use soap-free bath and shower gels. If you are overweight, losing weight will help too.”

What are the risks that are involved? Since heat and sweat are a part of our everyday life, fungal reactions under your breast area are a common risk. As a result, you can suffer from rashes around your breasts, which can cause discomfort. In such a situation, consult your doctor to find and treat the root cause. Shahnaz explains, “It’s best to keep the area under your breasts free of perspiration. Wear cotton bras and fresh underwear daily. Sprinkling some talcum powder under your bra will also help keep the area dry for a while.”

>> Opt for a medicated lip balm if you suffer from a lip infection dear Barbara, I enjoy trying out new lip products and I have an unhealthy obsession with flavoured lip balms and lip creams. While I like to wear a different balm every day, I have noticed that the edges of my lips have become very red, itchy and have also developed tiny bumps as well. The itching and burning sensation is uncomfortable, but I don’t know why it is happening, since all I am doing is moisturising my lips! What’s going wrong? — monideepa ray, santacruz (W) dear monideepa, It is great that you are taking good care of your lips by moisturising them regularly; the problem may lie in the choice of your lip balm itself. What you have described is a common reaction to lip balms that contain added flavours, scents, colour or glitter — all of which are chemicals. Try switching to a medicated lip balm that doesn’t have any scent or colour and see if the symptoms ease up. Throw away all your old lip balms, as their formula may have changed, if they have been sitting on your dresser for several months. If you use a lip balm that comes in a small jar or pot, you are transferring dirt and germs into it, every time you put your finger in, which can cause infections. So, it is a better idea to switch to balms that come in a retractable (roll-up) form. Also, remember to wash your hands well, before you touch your lips.

exfoliate Exfoliation is extremely important when it comes to your breasts. You

Shahnaz shares a few quick tips for breast care: l Apply lotions or creams that contain ingredients such as sandalwood, clove, rose, neem and khus to keep your breasts healthy. l Boil neem leaves on a low flame. Once they cool down, make a paste with the leaves and apply it on a rash. Rinse it off with cold water. l To reduce sweat, mix soda bicarbonate with talcum powder and apply it on your breasts. l Mix two drops of tea tree oil with 2tbsp of rose or plain water. Apply this on your rash with a cotton pad. l Basil leaves also help to soothe a rash. Take a few basil leaves, make a smooth paste and apply it on your rash. Allow it to dry and then wash it off with water.

SRIHARIKOTA (AP): From the famous catch phrase 'Yeh dil maange more' to epic science fiction thriller 'Gravity' were some of the ingredients in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech on Monday saluting Indian space scientists. "We have done a lot. We provide benefits of telemedicine to Afghanistan and African countries but 'Yeh dil maange more' (the heart wants more). I have proposed to our scientists that they develop a SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) satellite. This will help all our neighbours," he said in a speech shortly after the country's indigenous Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) blasted off on Monday from a spaceport here carrying five foreign satellites, reports PTI. Modi previously used the 'Yeh dil maange more' tagline while campaigning in Palampur, the Himachal Pradesh hometown of

In his congratulatory speech, Modi also hailed India's low-cost space technology, and made a reference to 'Gravity', a 2013 BritishAmerican 3D epic science fiction thriller film. "I have heard that the Hollywood movie 'Gravity' cost more than our Mars mission -- this is a great achievement," he said, adding," Our scientists have shown the world, a new paradigm of Frugal Engineering, and the power of Imagination. Friends, this success of ours has deep historical roots." Last year, India launched a bid to become the first Asian nation to reach Mars with a mission. The total cost of US $73 million for the Mars mission was less than a sixth of the $455 million earmarked for a Mars probe launched shortly afterwards by US space agency NASA.

Onion prices shoots up India, China sign pact to set by 40% at Lasalgaon up Chinese industrial parks N

EW DELHI: Onion prices have shot up 40 per cent in the last two weeks to Rs.18.50 per kg at Lasalgaon, the country's largest wholesale market for the edible bulb, despite the imposition of minimum export price on the vegetable to check its domestic rates from going up. Prices have increased due to speculation amid anticipation of weak monsoon affecting Kharif crops, National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF) Director R.P. Gupta told PTI. The impact of rise in onion prices at Lasalgaon in Nashik is being felt at Delhi's Azadpur market where they are ruling at Rs.15-25 per kg depending upon the quality, traders said. Average rate of onions at Lasalgaon have soared to Rs.18.50 per kg from Rs.13.25 per kg on June 18, as per NHRDF. On June 17, the Centre had imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 300 per tonne on onion to curb overseas sales and control rising retail prices. In last one month, prices have jumped by 90 per cent to Rs 18.50 per kg as against Rs 9.75 per kg on May 30. "Onion prices have gone up purely on anticipation of drought as there has not been any decline in the supplies," Gupta said. About 39 lakh tonnes of rabi onion is stored in the country but that may not be sufficient if Kharif crop gets affected on account of deficient monsoon, he added. The Met department has predicted a below normal monsoon this year, posing threat to Kharif crops including rice. Monsoon rains are key for the farm sector as about

40 per of agriculture land is irrigated through rain water. The domestic demand during the lean period from June to November is met through stored rabi (winter) crops and fresh kharif (summer) crops. Onion production is estimated to have risen to 192 lakh tonne during 2013-14 crop year (July-June), from 168 lakh tonne in 2012-13. Exports meanwhile fell to 13.58 lakh tonnes last fiscal from 18.22 lakh tonnes.

EXPERT VIEW

The maiden budget of the new government must focus on taking tough steps to revive the economy and regain consumer confidence. A concrete GST announcement with milestones will be great for the industry over all. We hope that the government continues to provide relief on excise duty on branded apparel. If restored, it will be a major setback for this job-creating industry. Finally, bolstering consumption ought to be on the agenda. If personal taxes are reduced, it will improve consumer sentiment, lead to more spends and spur growth.

Nifty Flares; Closes Above 7600

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Tuesday (July 1, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Monday (June 30, 2014) a net 102.55 points (1.37%) and closed at the 7611 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 7534 points level. It then declined by a few points and registered the day’s low at the 7531 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose steadily throughout the session and registered the day’s high at the 7623 points level at 3.06 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 88 points and closed above the psychologically important 7600 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 42 were gainers, while 8 stocks closed in the red.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 2.19%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 1162 were gainers, 408 were losers and 37 remained unchanged.

Slow Stocha stic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI rose and crossed above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.

Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7043 points level. The next support is at the 6846 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 7497 points level. The next resistance is at the 7569 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7589 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7554. Support (2) = 7497. Resistance (1) = 7646. Resistance (2) = 7681. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long white body candle on higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Further, the index has crossed above its 5 and 15 days moving averages in a single session. The index is now above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages. Moreover, the velocity parameters which were negatively trended are now turning neutral. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Technically, since the downwards risk seems to have reduced, Investors may consider buying in small quantities in shares that are fundamentally sound and have a long- term potential.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Has crossed above its 5-day average (at 7552) Positive. Has crossed above its 15-day average (at 7567) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 7500) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6471) Positive.

Overa ll Market Strength/Weaknes s: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Delay of Gas Price Hike Credit-Negative For ONGC, Oil India And RIL By A Business Reporter

L

ast Wednesday, the Government of India (Baa3 stable) announced it would delay planned increases in domestic natural gas prices by another three months until the end of September 2014. The originally scheduled 1 April implementation date was first delayed in March because of parliamentary elections in April and May. “The delayed price increase is credit negative for Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC, Baa2 stable), Oil India Limited (Baa2 stable), and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL, Baa2 positive) because it will delay the increase in revenues and EBITDA that would have resulted from revised gas prices. Their unrealized revenue gains are signifi-

cant, says Moody's in a credit Implications report on the issue. Under India’s new pricing formula, if the increases had gone ahead on 1 April, domestic natural gas prices would have nearly doubled by now to $8.0-$8.4 per million British thermal units (MMBTU) from the current $4.20/mmbtu. Instead, the six-month delay from the originally scheduled April implementation date means that the potential revenue increase for the three rated upstream companies in this fiscal year has been halved. According to Moody's “The delayed price increase will have the largest effect on state-owned ONGC because it is the largest producer of natural gas in the country. ONGC’s revenues for the fiscal year ending March 2015 would have increased

by about $3.3-$3.7 billion. RIL’s revenues would have climbed by $400$450 million and Oil India’s by $280-$310 million. Increased revenues for all three could be even higher over the next few years, as the production of domestic gas increases with new discoveries, assuming the new formula becomes operative. We expect that every billion cubic meters of gas produced will result in incremental revenue of $135$150 million for all three. The government also announced that it would review the gas pricing formula that the previous administration approved, which could make the resulting prices even lower than those calculated under the approved formula. Already, the approved formula puts domestic prices below current import prices of $15-17 per mmbtu.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Union Bank To Raise Rs 1,386 Cr Via QIP

Union Bank of India has proposed to raise Rs 1,386 crore through Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) to fund its business growth. Shareholders of the bank have approved raising of capital up to Rs 1,386 crore by way of QIP, UBI said in a statement. The bank had earlier planned the QIP last fiscal but it was called off considering poor market conditions. Therefore, the bank sought extension of the proposal from shareholders for raising fund through QIP in 2014-15. It is looking to raise the fund during the second quarter of the current fiscal. The planned QIP will improve its core tier-I capital, which had stood at 7.54 % in March quarter, by 0.50 %. Besides QIP, the bank is expecting capital infusion from the government during the current fiscal. The government infused Rs 500 crore in UBI during 2013-14 as part of Rs 14,000 crore recapitalisation plan. Recently, the bank raised USD 350 million (Rs 2,100 crore) through bonds from overseas market.

SAT Dismisses RIL Appeal Against Sebi By A Business Reporter

T

he Securities Appellate Tribunal has upheld a Sebi decision rejecting Reliance Industries Ltd's application to settle alleged violations of norms to check fraudulent and unfair trade practices in the RILReliance Petroleum merger case through a consent mechanism. The tribunal said Reliance's application is not maintainable because the new consent mechanism norms are applicable with retrospective effect. A full bench of the SAT, headed by presiding officer JP Devdhar, said the consent mechanism norms in the Sebi Act were amended with retrospective effect from April 2010. Reliance has been contesting a show-cause notice from Sebi in the case since December 2010 and from last year, the regulator's exclusion of the company from the new consent mechanism. The case dates back to 2008, when Sebi alleged violation of norms against RIL when it merges

unit Reliance Petroleum (RPL) with itself in 2007. The Mukesh Ambaniled company challenged the Sebi charges at the SAT in December 2010. It also involves RIL challenging the maintainability of Sebi's decision to exclude the company from the consent mechanism under new norms issued in January 2013. Under the mechanism, a company can settle an issue with the regulator after paying a penalty, without accepting or rejecting the charges against it. On Friday, when the SAT concluded the hearings, senior Sebi counsel Darius Khambatta had argued for maintaining the regulator's rejection of the RIL application, citing the January 2013 consent provisions. He also said the SAT cannot maintain the RIL appeal as the revised consent mechanism norms apply to the RIL case. He said Sebi rejected the RIL appeal for consent because the case involved serious violations of norms, apart from conducting fraudulent and unfair trading practices, reports PTI.

With the usage of audio-visuals, music, dance and drama, the presentation was a wonderful spectacle, preaching humanity. In the 18th century, the south Indian soil of Hyderabad witnessed Quli dynasty which over a period of time enhanced humanity. Quli Qutub Shah, the emperor of Hyderabad, fell in love with Bhagmati, daughter of a Brahmin priest, who married Quli and was later rechristened Begum Hyder Mahal. But tragedy had struck Hyderabad as many suffered and died due to the dreaded disease of plague. Rupesh Tillu’s Theatre Act believes in experimentation and innovation that can challenge the creator as well as theatre as an art form itself. After the roaring sucess of 'Madbeth' at the opening shows at Prithvi, he is back in town to tickle the bones of South Mumbai. Rupesh holds MFA in Physical Comedy from The National School of Dramatic Arts, Sweden. Now back to India, his home ground, he is here to experiment in theatre with Shakespeare’s works. Rupesh says, “When I worked hard, people wanted me to work harder, now I just play and they pay me.” Watch him at NCPA on Friday at 4 pm.

A unique concept

The sequel trend which is popular in Hindi film industry is now being adopted by the Marathi Film Industry, according to industry experts and there will be more films to follow this trend in future. It is natural that a hit trend from Hindi film industry will be followed by other industries. But this risk of making two sequels of a single film at the same time has been taken by Shri Productions' Girishkumar and Ashok Mokria in the movies 'Atithi part 1' and 'Atithi Part 2'. The shooting of these films has started from Kolhapur.

ONDON: Sabine Lisicki’s love affair with the grass courts of Wimbledon continues apace. Her 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic in a match much delayed by adverse weather conditions puts her into the last 16 of the Ladies’ Singles, an event where, in her last four appearances, she has finished runner-up, a semi-finalist and twice a quarter-finalist. She had already taken the opening set on Saturday evening when darkness put an end to the proceedings. Rain caused another delay on today’s resumption with Ivanovic leading 52 in the second set and when, after an hour and 20 minutes, they restarted the Serb promptly levelled the match, only for the German to run away with the third set in just 27 minutes, finishing off with successive aces.

IOA to seek deadline extension, proposes budget below Incheon

NEW DELHI: Indian Olympic Association will seek an extension of deadline of 15 days from its parent Asian body for the submission of the final bid to host the 2019 Asian Games, IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta said. Mehta told PTI that he will write to the Olympic Council of Asia to give 15 days extension of deadline for the submission of the final bid documents. The OCA had set the deadline of tomorrow. "We have submitted a detailed proposal to the sports ministry regarding the hosting of the 2019 Asian Games and it is now upto the government to decide whether the country should host the Games or not," Mehta said. "Since, the government will need some time to evaluate our proposal, I am going to write to the OCA tomorrow to give us 15 days extension of deadline on final bid submission," he added. Asked about the expected budget for hosting the Games, Mehta refused to give a specific amount but said that it would be less than the cost of the Incheon Asian Games to be held later this year. "In Delhi, we have most of the competition infrastructure and the government will not need to spend much on other non-competition infrastructure. In Incheon, they had to build stadia and transport and other facilities also. So, we will not need to spend that much and our budget will be less than that of Incheon," he said. The estimated budget of the Incheon Asian Games is USD 1.6 billion (approx Rs 9620 crores).

Realized it’s not important to prove anything to others: Kohli DAY-NIGHT TEST L LIKELY IN 2015-16 SEASON ONDON: He has seen success across all three formats during the last few years which elevated him to the status of team's 'Numero Uno' batsman but Virat Kohli feels that there comes a point in someone's career when one doesn't feel an urge "to prove anything to others". "Initially, you try to prove it to the critics that you're good enough to play at this level. Now I don't feel the need to prove anything to people. It's not that I believe that I have achieved it all but because I've realized that it is not important to prove anything to others. It's (more) important what I think of my performances and what I expect from myself," Kohli told BCCI.TV today. The maverick batsman said that he would do well with without advice from people that he needs to score big runs in England. "Playing a Test series in England is a big thing in my mind and I don't need people to tell me that he needs to score big runs in England and that this is the big test for him. I know that I want to score runs here and in every other country because I want to be the best." Kohli then took a dig at the critics who will be scathing in their analysis if a player has one bad series. "Cricket critics in our country are strange. You may have scored runs everywhere but if you don't do that in one country or series, they start doubting if you're good enough. They did that to the seniors as well during the fag end of their careers. "If you want someone to do well,

flat-track bullies. I have stopped paying attention to them. When I get out, I'm the first one who feels about it."

MELBOURNE: Many delays and trials later, day-night Tests may soon be a reality with Australia and New Zealand set to play in a historic fiveday game with pink balls during the next calender year. Cricket Australia (CA) CEO James Sutherland and his New Zealand counterpart David White met here last week during the International Cricket Council (ICC) annual conference to discuss the possibility of a day-night Test in 2015-16. The two boards are planning to stage the match when New Zealand tour Australia in November 2015 with Hobart and Adelaide as possible venues for the inaugural match. The ICC approved Test cricket under lights in 2012 with the member countries told to work together on the finer points and pink ball trials were started in the Sheffield Shield games last summer. "We are serious about pushing ahead with the concept of day-night Test cricket," Sutherland said in a statement. "We feel it will only strengthen the position and possibilities for Test cricket in many parts of the world. "There are many Test matches played during non-holiday periods when adults are at work and kids are at school and that's not an ideal way to promote the highest form of the game."

Costa Rica players celebrate after winning a penalty shootout at the end of the against Greece at the Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil. Costa Rica won 5-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1.

COSTA RICIANS GREECEFULLY SAIL THROUGH Costa Rica beat Greece 5-3 on penalties to reach quarters

R

ECIFE (BRAZIL): Ten-man Costa Rica beat Greece 5-3 on penalties after an epic battle to set up a quarterfinal clash with the Netherlands, who edged out Mexico 2-1 in their last16 match of the FIFA World Cup. Costa Rica, who were reduced to 10-man in the second half, were put ahead by Bryan Ruiz in the 52nd minute but a late equaliser by Sokratis Papastathopoulos early in stoppage time rescued Greece as the match headed to extra time. The two teams, however, could not be separated even in the extra time and finally Costa Rica sealed their maiden quarterfinal berth when Michael Umana converted his team's fifth penalty after Fanis Gekas missed Greece's fourth at Arena Pernambuco.

Memory serves nerveless Navas well

Celso Borges set the ball rolling, putting Costa Rica ahead in the penalty shootout that followed their 1-1 draw with Greece. Next up to the spot was Konstantinos Mitroglou, who held his nerve to put the Greeks level. By the time Theofanis Gekas stepped up to take his kick, Los Ticos led 4-3, with every player having converted. Facing him was a former teammate in Keylor Navas. Taking up the story, Navas said, “We played together at Levante and I remembered what he used to do in training. I was confident he wasn’t going to change the way he takes his penalties, and in the end I was able to keep it out.”

Celso Borges, Bryan Ruiz, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Joel Campbell and Umana converted all the five penalties for Costa Rica, while Konstantinos Mitroglou, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Jose Holebas scored for Greece before Costa Rica goalkeeper Navas made a brilliant save from Theofanis Gekas. Costa Rica players broke into a dance amid cheering from their fans but the Greece players were left teary-eyed following their exit from the World Cup. At Fortaleza, Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored an injury-time penalty to send the Netherlands into the quarterfinals with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Mexico. the area by Rafa Marquez in the injury time and Huntelaar coolly placed a brilliant penalty into the bottom-left corner to knock Mexico out of the tournament. However, it was Wesley Sneijder who rescued the 2010 runners-up, in the 88th minute, bringing up the equaliser, cancelling out the 48th minute brilliant goal by Giovani Dos Santos which had put Mexico ahead. Mexicans had dominated the match and looked destined to

reach their first quarter-finals since 1986 but Sneijder's effort two minutes from time and Huntelaar's penalty in added time crushed their dreams. In a battle of attrition, neither Greece nor Costa Rica could break the deadlock in the first half of the second match of the day. Greece, playing their first ever game in the knockout stages of the World Cup, could have gone ahead at the 37th minute when Dimitrios Salpingidis almost sent Jose Holebas' cross home but goalkeeper Keylor Navas stuck his leg out in time to make a good save. Costa Rica too had a chance to go one-up when Christian Bolanos penetrated the left side of the penalty area in the eighth minute but his shot went over the crossbar.

Pinto revels in Costa Rica success R

ECIFE (BRAZIL): Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto praised his players' character after they overcame a second-half red card, conceding a late leveller and sustained attacks from Greece to reach their first ever World Cup quarter-final. The Netherlands lie in wake for Los Ticos after a topsy-turvy encounter in Recife, where they went ahead early in the second half through captain Bryan Ruiz's firsttime strike. That looked to be enough for Costa Rica, only for Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos to net a stoppagetime leveller to take the last-16 encounter into extra time. The match eventually went to penalties and, after man-of-the-match Keylor Navas saved Theofanis

Gekas' attempt, Michael Umana struck home to send the Central Americans into the last eight. "I am very happy," coach Pinto said after the 5-3 penalty shootout win. "This is an incredible emotion that we all feel, this is an important win for the team and for the whole country. We are really proud. "We are making history. It's beautiful what we have done. This win is for everyone in Costa Rica. We practiced penalties before and we had studied the opposition and that's why we scored 100 per cent. "It was a dramatic match, a very difficult one. There were moments when we dominated the match but there were other moments when they did but we were strong and we came through."

RIO DE JANEIRO: What was meant to be a joke has turned into a PR blunder for Dutch airline KLM after it angered Mexican soccer fans by taking to Twitter to celebrate the Netherlands' dramatic comeback victory in the World Cup. Within minutes of the Netherlands' 2-1 victory over the Tri, KLM let loose on its Twitter feed a picture of an airport departures sign under the heading "Adios Amigos!" Next to the word "Departures" is the image of a man with a mustache wearing a sombrero. The post immediately went viral, with A-list Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal using not one but two expletives in a 140-character Tweet to tell his 2 millionplus followers that he'll never fly the carrier again. Amid the widespread protest online, the post was pulled a halfhour later without an explanation. "It was meant to be a joke," KLM spokeswoman Lisette Ebeling Koning told The Associated Press, adding that the airline never intended to offend Mexicans, which it serves via a daily direct flight between Mexico City and Amsterdam. "But there was too much negative reaction." KLM issued a formal apology late last night.

Costa Rica celebrates World Cup win over Greece

SAN JOSE: From the beaches to the capital, Costa Ricans poured into the streets Sunday to celebrate the national team's historic World Cup victory over Greece that will put the team in the quarter finals for the first time. Fans in the capital of San Jose gathered at the Fuente de la Hispanidad, a fountain and traditional celebrating spot, carrying flags, wearing wigs and jerseys, honking and whooping following the team's win in a penalty shootout. "The country has fallen. There's been an earthquake," said restaurateur Teo Prestinary, 43, on the beach in Nosara, where he said it was jammed with countrymen cheering, whistling and singing "Vamos Ticos," or "Go, Costa Ricans." "It's beautiful. It's historic, emotional."

Stressed Brazil fan smashes TV, video goes viral

RIO DE JANEIRO: Ah, World Cup penalty shootouts. The stress. The anguish. The joy. The mad dash to find somewhere else to watch the final minutes after you smash your flat-screen TV. That, at least, was the experience of Brazilian fan Rafael Gambarim, who was so overcome with emotion while watching the host nation's penalty shootout against Chile on Saturday that he smashed his own television set. A video of his outburst has been shared 34,000 times on Facebook and been viewed more than 36,000 times on YouTube. It shows Gambarim and two cousins embracing and leaping with joy as Brazil's Julio Cesar saves a penalty by Chile's Alexis Sanchez after their round of 16 match ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time. Gambarim appears to kiss and embrace the TV as it shows images of the Brazilian keeper.

Karagounis quits int’l football MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 1, 2014

RECIFE (BRAZIL): Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis has retired from international football following his country's FIFA World Cup elimination. A penalty shoot-out defeat to Costa Rica ended Greece's run in Brazil at the last-16 stage on Sunday night. Karagounis told reporters after the game: "This was my last game for Greece. We wanted to stay in Brazil another week or even longer but you can't change it now." The defeat ended Greece's bid for another unlikely tournament success following their UEFA Euro 2004 triumph. Karagounis, who ends his international career with 139 caps and ten goals to his name, and Kostas Katsouranis were the only two survivors from that tournament in the 2014 squad. "You don't always get such breaks in life but our heads are high," said Karagounis after his side's elimination. "These games and experiences are a great launching pad for the future. They will help keep the team on this level, something not always easy. We are Greece after all, we don't have many means. "The national team has grown up, younger players have won invaluable experiences. This is no small thing and as we helped the team come of age we hope it will continue to be as successful in the future." It was also coach Fernando Santos' final game with Greece, with his contract expiring following the World Cup. Greece forced extra time, and ultimately penalties, in injury time as defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos scored his first international goal to cancel out Bryan Ruiz's opener for Costa Rica. But Theofanis Gekas had his penalty saved by Keylor Navas, enabling Michael Umana to win it for the Central Americans.

MESSI’S ARGENTINA LOOK TO PEAK AGAINST SWISS S Switzerland's defender Fabian Schaer (front) exercises during a team training session.

AO PAULO: Lionel Messi's goals have fired Argentina into the World Cup last 16 but they will look for a better allround performance when they meet Switzerland tomorrow. The diminutive four-time player of the year has finally sparked for his country, hitting four of their six goals as Argentina qualified top of Group F. But Argentina needed Messi's late winner to overcome Iran 1-0 and they also shipped two goals before beating Nigeria 3-2, lowering expectations of a third world title.

They will face their toughest opponents yet in Switzerland, who put seven goals past group opponents Ecuador, France and Honduras, including three from Xherdan Shaqiri. "Now we can't make any mistakes as any error will see us getting knocked out," Messi warned after Argentina negotiated the group stage. "There is nothing more beautiful than to be world champion, to achieve that with my country." In Argentina's favour is that more than 100,000 of their fans are expected to flood Sao Paulo ahead of Tuesday's game, includ-

ing many inside Corinthians Arena. But they will have to cope with the loss of Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero, who is out with a muscle injury after going off in the first half against Nigeria. Both Messi and coach Alejandro Sabella acknowledge that Argentina are a work in progress but they will now hope to raise the heat on their slow-burning campaign. "We've got nine points, but we can always get better," Sabella said. Former Bayern Munich coach

USA plan to go on offensive against Belgium S

ALVADOR (BRAZIL): United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann says attack will be the best form of defence when his American underdogs tackle Belgium tomorrow for a place in the World Cup quarter-finals. The United States confounded all pre-tournament predictions by battling their way out of a daunting Group G, finishing behind Germany but claiming the runners-up spot ahead of Portugal and Ghana. Klinsmann acknowledged, however, that his team must improve on last Thursday's 1-0 defeat by the Germans in Recife if they are to provide another shock by eliminating Belgium, regarded by many as tournament dark horses. Of particular concern to Klinsmann is his team's attack. According to FIFA statistics compiled after the completion of the first round, the United States had just 72 attacks in three games -- putting them 31st among 32 teams. Klinsmann says he wants to buck that trend against a Belgium side who may be missing centrebacks Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen, both of whom are battling to recover from injuries. "It's definitely something we learnt out of the

"We were too deep, especially the first 20 minutes. I was screaming my lungs off there to get the back line out and to move the entire unit higher up the field. So we'll work on that over the next couple of days in training, to shift the entire game forward and through that put more pressure on the opponent and create more chances. This is really one of our goals. It was good at the other end. We didn't give away too many chances."

'PREFER TO WIN 1-0' Klinsmann's Belgian counterpart, Marc Wilmots has shrugged off suggestions that his team have so far failed to contribute to the feast of attacking football being laid on at this World Cup. Three group wins over Algeria, Russia and South Korea were secured with very little flair, but Wilmots is not concerned. "If you ask whether I'd rather put on a good show and go out at the first stage, or win games 1-0, I prefer to win 1-0," Wilmots said.

Ottmar Hitzfeld will relish the clash against one of the pre-tournament favourites in what he says will be his last hurrah before retirement. Despite their 5-2 hammering by France, Switzerland have twice bettered Latin American opposition already after their 2-1 and 3-0 wins over Ecuador and Honduras respectively. Their attack will be spearheaded by one of the revelations of the tournament, 22-year-old Shaqiri, who hit all three goals against Honduras to secure Switzerland's qualification.

Ochoa the standout for valiant Mexicans

FORTALEZA (BRAZIL): He'd stopped two of the world's most famous forwards, and yesterday, Brazilians and Mexicans alike chanted his name. Guillermo Ochoa was one of the main reasons why Mexico was on the brink of reaching the quarterfinals at the World Cup -- before the Netherlands came from a goal down to win 2-1 with two late goals. Voted man of the match, he was inconsolable. "It isn't easy to go out this way, the way this match went," said a keeper who had denied Brazil star Neymar and Dutch forward Arjen Robben at the World Cup. "It's just very hard to deal with when victory escapes you this way."

HEADS UP POGBA!

B

RASILIA: France ended Nigeria’s hopes of a first World Cup quarter-final appearance when they scored two late goals to beat the Super Eagles 2-0 in a rough secondround match on Monday. Paul Pogba put France ahead in the 79th minute, heading in at the far post after Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama flapped at Mathieu Valbuena’s corner following a sustained spell of French pressure. The win was sealed when Joseph Yobo turned a low cross into his own goal in stoppage time and France will play Germany or Algeria in the last eight. It was a controversial victory, however, as the game had swung France’s way after Nigeria’s influential midfielder Ogenyi Onazi was injured by a late tackle from Blaise Matuidi, who was lucky to escape with only a yellow card. Nigeria had been defending increasingly desperately in the run-up to Pogba’s goal. France were centimeters from going ahead when Karim Benzema poked the ball past

Robben sorry for World Cup dive, but insists penalty was right F

ORTALEZA: Dutch striker Arjen Robben has apologized for diving in a bid to get a penalty against Mexico but insisted he did not fake the foul that led to his side's winning penalty kick. Mexico's coach Miguel Herrera launched a furious attack on match referee Pedro Proenca for giving the injury time penalty that Jan-Klaas Huntelaar hit home to seal a 2-1 comeback victory. Robben was at the centre of both incidents in the World Cup last16 clash in Fortaleza. "I really have to say and at the same time apologise in the first half I took a dive and I really shouldn't do that," Robben told Dutch broadcaster NOS as he celebrated the victory.

"That was a stupid, stupid thing to do but sometimes you're expecting to be struck and then they pull their leg away at the last minute." But the Dutch striker insisted Proenca was right to point to the

penalty spot after he was challenged by Mexico's veteran captain Rafael Marquez. "I was fouled," he said. Mexico had been leading until the 88th minute when Wesley Sneijder scored and then Huntelaar put

away the penalty. And Herrera said referee Proenca should take no more part in the World Cup. "The determining factor was the man with the whistle. He put us of the World Cup," he said. "Although the first goal was down to our mistake, we had the chance to reconsider during the break before extra time, but at the end when the referee invents a penalty you go out of the World Cup. "At the very least they can look at this and this gentleman ought to be going home like us." Herrera claimed his side had been the victim of poor refereeing in three of their four games in Brazil and a European referee should never have been allocated the game in the first place.

There are 20 minutes left to play at Belo Horizonte on 17 June and Belgium are not only trailing in their opening game to Algeria, but appear to be losing the tactical battle too. Fast forward five days and Les Diables Rouges (Red Devils) are faring only slightly better against Russia, unable to unlock their opponents' defence in the closing moments of a seemingly inevitable 0-0 draw at the Maracana. The situation then looks even more fraught at halftime during their final Group H outing against Korea Republic, with Marc Wilmots' side a man down and bereft of ideas in Sao Paolo. "If someone had told us before the World Cup that we'd finish with nine points out of nine in the group stage, we never would have believed it," said Daniel van Buyten, as impressed as anyone with his team's late heroics in each fixture.

Brazil team official suspended after 'punch' claim

RIO DE JANERIO: Brazil's press chief Rodrigo Paiva has been suspended for one game following allegations he punched Chilean player Mauricio Pinilla during the World Cup last 16 game between the two countries, FIFA said. Paiva was issued with a red card following the incident and will not be able to take any part in Brazil's quarterfinal against Colombia on Friday, FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer confirmed. FIFA's disciplinary committee was also investigating the incident, meaning Paiva could face further sanctions. The fracas happened at half-time in Saturday's match, which Brazil won on penalties. Chile's media spokesman Maria Jose said his Brazilian counterpart "hit" Pinilla. Paiva told Brazilian media there was shoving by both sides as the two teams left the field.

No action on Robben over 'dive' comment: FIFA RIO DE JANERIO: Dutch star Arjen Robben will not face any disciplinary action after admitting to diving during his team's last 16 victory with Mexico, FIFA confirmed. Robben, who won a matchwinning injury-time penalty to secure a 2-1 win for the Netherlands, admitted later he had dived in a failed attempt to win a spot-kick earlier in the match. However, FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer ruled out any possibility of retrospective actions when asked about Robben's comments at a briefing today. Fischer said sanctioning after the fact only applied to "serious infringements of foul play which have escaped the notice of the match officials." The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said earlier Monday that Robben's post-match comments had been misinterpreted. "Media have interpreted statements from Robben in a Dutch post match interview completely wrong," the KNVB said.
