Two-legged robot can walk on grass

A two-legged robot that can keep its balance and walk in an outdoor field, full of lumps, bumps and uneven terrain, is three times more energy-efficient than any other human-sized bipedal robot, scientists say.

Researchers at Oregon State University last week successfully field-tested for the first time the locomotion abilities of the two-legged robot with technology that they believe heralds the running robots of the future.

The test demonstrated that their 'ATRIAS' robot can move quite nicely, keep its balance and withstand mild blows from a bouncing rubber ball, while taking a walk on the grass, up and down hill, and over varying terrain at a normal walking speed of a little more than three miles per hour.

As a bipedal robot that was biologically inspired to mimic the spring-legged action of animals, the researchers said this is the closest a machine has yet come to resembling human locomotion.

The human-sized robot had six electric motors powered by a lithium polymer battery about the size of a half-gallon of milk, which is substantially smaller than the power packs of some other mobile robots.

This is made possible by the energy efficiency of its elastic leg design and the energy retention that's natural to animal movement.

"Animals with legs sort of flow in the energy used, in which retained kinetic energy is just nudged by very efficient muscles and tendons to continue the

movement once it has begun," said Jonathan Hurst, an Oregon State associate professor of mechanical engineering, and director of the Dynamic Robotics Laboratory in the OSU College of Engineering.

"That's part of what's unique about ATRIAS - not just that it can walk, and will eventually run - but that it's doing so with animal-inspired fluidity of motion that is so efficient," Hurst said.

"This will ultimately allow a much wider range of robotic uses and potential than something which requires

larger amounts of energy," he said.

In the tests, the robot was tethered to a safety harness on a supporting frame that rolled along with it - not to supply energy or aid in walking, but just to help catch it if it fell, which it did a couple times due to sensor glitches.

"It already appears that ATRIAS is three times more energy-efficient than any other human-sized bipedal robot," said Christian Hubicki, an OSU postdoctoral scholar who is working with Hurst.

amuels, the notorious drug peddler arrested for supplying narcotics to Shashikala, alias Baby Patankar, who in turn spilled the beans on police constable Dharma Kalokhe, has now revealed the identity of another big time drug lord from whom he used to source drugs, crime branch officers disclosed on Thursday and added that they have begun tracing this elusive guy since they have reasons to believe that he is an important link between Patankar and Samuels.

Investigators said they want to determine if either of these policemen ever assisted Baby in evading other cops or obtained any pecuniary benefits from her drug trade.

The suicides occurred during the time when the Congress was in power. And most of them could have been prevented if the government had taken the required steps.

The crop failure was not the major cases that drove farmers to commit suicide. It was mainly because the farmers were not able to pay bank loans and money taken from private moneylenders. Rahul Gandhi is trying to pose a challenge to the BJP. The walking may do some good to his health, but it can only be one more frustrating exercise in his life.

ITH the impending visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to China around the middle of next month being viewed through the prism of Indian diplomacy, the associated potential parleys doing the rounds in India’s government, in various Indian diplomatic missions around the world, and in several economic-industrial establishments of the country, are possibly deliberating about the Government of India’s intention of removing the needless hurdles in the way of effecting investments in India from certain Chinese companies. The two Asian neighbours, whose relationship has swung — and does so — akin to that of a pendulum, the reach of whose one limit has been rivalry and the other limit marked by fleeting explicit utterances – more particularly by the Chinese — of enduring friendship, seem to be progressing towards the next step, which could eclipse the essentially superficial verbal expressions of friendship, and begin to prepare the ground, for certain mutually expedient and tangible outcomes.

Although the issues as regards India’s territorial integrity and its preparedness to meet any national security challenges by China — directly or obliquely — remains a paramount objective in Indian defence and diplomacy, the prospect of expediencies through enhanced economic relations seems to be tempering, to some extent, the more often than not domineering and confrontationist predisposition of China towards India. With India’s intention of a symbiotic economic relationship emanated meaningfully, China appears to be relatively more receptive for an appropriate response, in kind, to the Indian initiative.

Tracing the history of any type of food is difficult. But, it is particularly hard when it comes to sorbets, thanks to the fact that their origin is intermingled with that of ice cream, which may be similar, but has striking differences — see our box on sorbets vs. ice cream for more about that. The history of ice cream itself includes several half-truths and myths and chronicling the history of the sorbet is no different. Popular beliefs (which most historians consider to be myths) include a story where Roman emperor Nero maintained a line of runners who brought him ice from Italy’s mountains and the story that Catherine de Medici brought sorbets to France when she married the Duke of Orleans (the future King Henri II of France) in 1533. Another story suggests that it was Marco Polo who discovered sorbets in China during his world travels, and brought his love of them back to Europe.

However, historians doubt that the merchant traveller ever even visited China.

What is widely known, however, is that by the 17th century, European nobility, especially those in France, England and Italy, were particularly fond of sorbets. Most noble families even had expensive underground ice houses built to store the ice, which was then flavoured and served at dinner parties. Sorbet as we know it today, probably came about thanks to Agnes Berta Marshall, an English culinary entrepreneur, who wrote numerous cookbooks. One of her recipes, Cornets with Cream, is believed to be the first published version of the recipe for an ice cream cone. In fact, her work with ice cream and frozen desserts led to her being labelled the Queen of Ices and she has been honoured on the menu of Fat Duck, Heston Blumenthal’s Michelin 3-star restaurant in the UK. Sorbets are now extremely popular and this simple dish is the mark of a chef’s ability. Don’t get us wrong; many chefs will tell you that making a sorbet is as easy as making an ice cream — and they aren’t wrong. However, achieving the correct consistency and maintaining the balance of flavour that is the mark of the perfect sorbet is difficult. The reason that making a sorbet isn’t taken as seriously is because an average or bad sorbet is also... well, pretty good!

WhaT makes a good sorbeT We aren’t going to be food snobs and tell you how a good sorbet should taste — we’ll let your tastebuds be the best judge of that. However, this guide will help you to understand the culinary process behind creating sorbets in order to help you to make the perfect one. It goes without saying that a sorbet is something that only those who have an experience in the kitchen can attempt. But, wait! It only contains sugar, water and flavour. So, what makes it so difficult to create?

The raTio This is the Holy Grail of making the perfect sorbet. The ratio of sugar and water will make or break your sorbet — literally!

Too little sugar means that your sorbet will not hold, since the sugar is what gives the sweet treat its texture and helps it hold its shape. Dairy fat does the same job for ice cream. On the other hand, if there is too much sugar, the sorbet will resemble a big bar of flavoured ice — of course, you can call it an ice lollipop and salvage the situation! continued on pg 10 «

Chefs speak “Use fresh fruit juices or fruit pulp to make great sorbets. You can break the sweetness with a pinch of salt. If you don’t have an ice cream churner, don’t worry! Just chill the sorbet mix till it’s almost frozen, then blend it. Freeze this blended slush to prepare your sorbet.”

Don’t try to minimise the sugar content in your sorbet. Apart from adding a sweet taste, sugar gives sorbets the perfect consistency and shape, but it’s important to use the right amount of sugar. If your sorbet doesn’t turn out right, let it melt. You can then fix the proportions and churn it again as the base of the sorbet is very forgiving. Melting the sorbet in a small saucepan will allow you to warm it up enough to dissolve extra sugar or preserves, if the finished product was too icy.”

hoW Much iS too Much?

Unfortunately, there is no standard measure for too much or too little sugar. The amount of sugar that you will need depends on the fruit that you’re using. You will have to account for the sugar content in the fruit and so, the amount of sugar you use will depend on the sorbet that you’re attempting to make. Having said that, four parts fruit purée to one part sugar is usually a good ratio to aim for — you may not always get the perfect sorbet, but it won’t fall apart.

Think serving sorbets at your next house party is a good idea? These recipes will help you out n Make a light sugar syrup by mixing sugar with coconut water and

cooking it on a low flame for three minutes.

n Pour the strained lychee pulp into a large bowl and whisk in the

coconut sugar syrup until it is well-mixed, then whisk in rose water, rose syrup and salt. n Chill this pulp in the refrigerator until very cold and almost frozen. n Blend it with a blender to give it a slushy feel or if you have an ice cream maker, churn this mix in the ice cream maker for 10-15 minutes. n Transfer to an airtight container and chill in the freezer for at least four hours before serving.

ManGo & coriander Sorbet

freSh flaVourS We aren’t talking about fresh fruit any more. We’re talking about the flavour. Sorbets usually taste great, no matter what flavour you pick. And, though we agree (and love chocolate sorbets!), refreshing flavours such as lime, watermelon, raspberry and strawberry lend themselves particularly well to the sweet treat. It’s not a coincidence that tart flavours form a majority of that list — tangy, crushed ice is a simple, but delicious pleasure.

KiWi Sorbet

Recipe by: Ranjit Surve Ingredients: 10 kiwis, 1 cup water, ¾ cup sugar, 2 tbsps dessert wine (Ranjit prefers Pause Indian Nectar), 1 tsp fresh lemon juice Method n Mix water and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil until all the sugar is dissolved. n Lower the heat and let it simmer until the water reduces slightly. Turn off the heat, cover it and let it cool down to room temperature. n Peel the kiwis and cut each one in half. Use a blender or food processor to purée the fruit until it’s smooth. n Combine the kiwi purée with the cooled syrup, a dash of desert wine and lemon juice. Pour into an ice cream maker and blend. n Stick it into a freezer and serve after an hour.

Recipe by: Saransh Goila Ingredients: 4 cups mango pulp, ½ cup sugar, ½ cup water, ½ tsp salt, 2 tsp ginger juice, 2 tsp lemon juice, 2 tsp coriander leaves Method n Make sure that the mango pulp is smooth. Strain it if you need to. n Make a light sugar syrup by mixing sugar with water and cooking it on a low flame for three to four minutes. n Pour the strained pulp into a large bowl and whisk in the sugar syrup until it is mixed well. Whisk in ginger juice, lime juice, coriander and salt. n Chill this pulp in refrigerator for two to three hours or until it’s cold.

Churn the mixture in an ice cream maker for 10-15 minutes, then transfer it to an airtight container and let it chill in the freezer for at least four hours before serving.

lychee & roSe Sorbet

Recipe by: Saransh Goila Ingredients: 5 cups lychees (cleaned and deseeded), ½ cup sugar , 1 cup coconut water , 6-7 drops rose water, 1 ½ tbsp rose syrup Method n Blend the lychees and strain them to get a smooth pulp.

ari Mahidar is hosting a photography exhibition called Equilibrium - Not Balance but Gravity. Hari tells us, “This show evokes gravity and also levity, which is humour that lurks in the nitty-grittiness of mundane life as much as gravity. It is this balance between gravity and levity that is sought to be presented in my testament to whimsy.” The exhibition of

photographs appears to be about balance, but Hari is actually challenging the concept of gravity.

While explaining the exhibition title, Hari tells us, “What equilibrium means to me is less important than what it connotes to the viewer analysing my photographs. One can look at these as a light-hearted quest for possibilities that abound in nature, in chaos and in things lying all around. So, where someone might see a serpent, another might see the God of good beginning a game of chance. And where someone sees a mermaid, another may perceive a banded krait caught in a yogic pose!”

Done Right Fashionable home décor is just a click away, now that Fashionara.com, which is known for its clothing, has launched a home décor section. Sara Shah tells you more

W

e’re big fans of Fashionara.com. It’s one of our guilty indulgences — we skim through it for ‘work’ and then hit the checkout button, because, well, it’s one of the best websites to get your fashion fix. But, if we wanted a few knick-knacks for our home, we would have had to look elsewhere. All that is about to change now, as the website recently launched a separate section dedicated to home décor.

And we must say, we’re really impressed!

The only way to describe Fashionara.com’s new venture is that it is simplicity at its best. You won’t find too many highend products — nothing too fancy or remotely difficult to decipher. Everything is simple and easy to understand. The Home Fashion link is placed at the top of the website, alongside all their other sections.It offers a range of collections, which span across seven categories, namely bed and bath, living, kitchen and dining, décor, study, this and that and f.lea bazaar. The section house a total of 36 different home décor brands and features over 7,500 home décor products.

Now, while all the other sub-sections offer the usual items you’d find in a home décor store, what piqued my interest

were their ‘this n that’ and ‘f.lea bazaar’ sub-sections. The former offers little knick-knacks, home improvement items, bean bags and other items such as mosquito coil holders, keychains, hooks, locks, stools, trinket boxes and stands for incense sticks. The latter is pretty amazing — it features items from flea markets across the country. Here, you can buy anything from superhero-themed cushions to fun alcohol and bar accessories. My favourite item from this section was a tap bottle stopper (`350), a unique bottle stopper with a decorative brass tap. Quite cute, don’t you think?

While the section’s design was pleasant enough to browse through, the reason I liked their home fashion section was the variety of products on offer. There is plenty to choose from and you are bound to be spoilt for choice. Most items available here are also quite affordable — prices start from as low as `100 and go up to `7,499. I was quite impressed and I’m pretty sure that anyone who is looking for a good range of home décor options at affordable prices will be as well. Log on and see for yourself!

ocated in a lane opposite the domestic airport is fashion designer Anjali Jani’s flagship store. The central location helps the store get more footfall, and Anjali tells us, “Thankfully, the building belongs to my family. So, I was fortunate enough to be able to use it for my store.”

Anjali graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, with an Associate of Arts degree in fashion design. She has worked under designers such as Rocky S and Manish Malhotra. So, I was really looking forward to checking out her work.

The dominant use of wood in the décor is apparent as soon as you enter the store. It adds a subtle touch of class to the overall look of the space. Anjali has also used texture to her advantage, splashing it across the walls to bring in a trendy vibe. All in all, the large space (2,000 square feet) left me pretty impressed.

The Anjali Jani store specifically houses womenswear collections featuring lehengas, jumpsuits, jackets, shoes, clutches and jewellery.

What caught my eye was the extensive use of Indian textiles including handloom fabrics, cottons, chanderis and tussars and dupeon silks.

The current range at the store is part of her new collection inspired by Rann Utsav — the Rann of Kutch festival. So, needless to say, the collection was pretty colourful!

Anjali explained that she draws inspiration from her love of all things classic — things that don’t date. Her garments reflect Indian textiles and embroideries that have stood the test of time and represent eternal beauty.

Anjali does want to expand her collection and make her store a one-stop shop for menswear, lifestyle accessories, women’s accessories and jewellery. But, for now, she is focusing on her illustrious womenswear collection, and she does it well! Her collection is reasonably priced from `15,000 onwards, but it’s mainly targeted at people who are looking for bridal wear. So, if your aim is to buy something ethnic for a casual function, this store may not be the right destination for you. But, if a family wedding is on the cards, then we suggest you check out this collection.

blueFROG one of mumbai’s best live music clubs, blueFrog recently revamped its food and beverage menu. Dev goswami headed over on a sweltering, but relaxing weekend to try their sunday brunch. He tells you what’s good

he faint murmur of people huddled in the trademark blueFROG pods; cheery staff moving around, relaxed on what is almost like a day off compared to weekend nights, when a 400-strong crowd usually throngs the place; a guitarist crooning on stage, playing oldschool hits; and hurried activity in the live kitchen as chefs quickly plate up breakfast and main course items... This is the perfect Sunday brunch scene to me, so walking into the vinyl-covered reception at blueFROG helped start the day pretty perfectly. blueFROG has been a name associated with good food and really good performances. While they have always been known for their excellent music, they’ve branched out and started a monthly, Theatre at the FROG event, which is something that I’m quite excited about. I visited on a Sunday afternoon, braving the heat for what I was hoping would be a few relaxing hours spent eating good food in the cosy lounge.

Their Sunday brunch includes a range of tapas, arranged neatly on a buffet table in front of the live kitchen, which dishes out eggs (you can ask for any style you want) and main course dishes. They also have a selection of cocktails that you can choose from, but almost the entire list features vodka-based concoctions, which is disappointing. Thankfully, they do accept requests to replace the vodka with white rum.

They have around 20 assorted tapas, offering a mix of vegetarian and nonvegetarian options, but I wasn’t too impressed by their selections — and their starters used to be the star of their brunch! Most of the tapas fell below par for me, and the vegetarian selection was much better than the non-vegetarian.

your steak or it will be served done to death. The grilled tiger prawns really won us over though. The subtle flavour of raw mango salsa with the wellcooked, juicy prawns was a heavenly combination.

Their desserts were good but not extraordinary — although the Basil Crème Brulee was delicious. It failed as a crème brulee, but was so delicious, we’d forgive the slight texture issue. Their cocktails didn’t stand out either. The Indian Summer, impressed me with its aamras-like flavour and was the best drink of the day. All the other drinks (Get Fresh, Aniseed Martini and Californian Blanc) however, could have been mixed better. Most were a little too potent, with the alcohol overpowering the refreshing flavour that they should have had.

Would I go back for the Sunday brunch? Definitely! Their main course dishes were a big hit, but I’m hoping for better cocktails and tapas next time around. Even though there are a few negatives, the entire experience makes for a relaxing, delicious Sunday afternoon. Their revamped menu is promising and I have no trouble believing that it will be a hit, as soon as they iron out a few creases. Check it out!

Holachef.com has different lunch and dinner menus every day. So, the website offers a variety of options to choose from. Browsing through it is almost like browsing through a shopping website. Choose your dishes, add them to your cart, apply a coupon code (if any) and place your order. You can pay by credit or debit card and they also have a cash on delivery option.

You can choose a time slot for delivery according to your preference. Convenient, right?!

As soon as I logged on, I was spoilt for choice, because their menu is pretty varied, offering appetisers, beverages, main course dishes and desserts. Moreover, it’s not restricted to one cuisine — you can pick from several including Italian, Mughlai and Thai. My roommates and I decided to order the Mutton Roghan Josh with Saffron Rice & Raita (`350), Chicken Roulade with Balsamic Veg and Dinner rolls (`300), Veg Chettinad with Neer Dosa, Tamarind Rice & Tomato Rasam (`150), Shahi Kaju Paneer with Palak Puris (`250), 250ml of Masala Butter Milk (`40) and a Walnut Brownie (`75) for dessert. Six dishes for `1,065 — that’s pretty reasonable!

Unfortunately, we were left disappointed after actually tasting the food. The mutton was delicious, but it didn’t taste like a Mutton Roghan Josh. The Chicken Roulade got a mixed response — two of us absolutely loved the tender chicken, but one found it too salty. I am not a big fan of paneer, but the Shahi Paneer was a favourite — the paneer was super soft and the palak puris went perfectly well with it. But, the puris were soaked in so much oil that we had to dab them with a tissue before eating them!

The Veg Chettinad was the biggest disappointment of our evening, because it tasted nothing like the authentic chettinad curry and even the tamarind rice didn’t win us over. We were looking for an authentic dish, and it failed to impress my room-mate, who is from Andhra Pradesh. However, the buttermilk and brownie were pretty great. The brownie was light and soft — exactly the way it should be!

When it comes to packaging, Holachef.com gets a perfect score. Everything was neatly packed in containers and carefully stored. Every dish had the chef’s name written on it and came with tissues, plastic spoons and straws. I was not really satisfied with my experience because in the end, taste matters, and this is where Holachef failed to deliver. However, it does offer reasonably good food at affordable prices.

So, you can give Holachef.com a try and maybe steer clear of the dishes that we ordered to see if you get a better deal.

n this week’s release, Gabbar Is Back, there is a line, “Naam villain ka, kaam hero ka,” which is as big a tribute as any to the most memorable villain of Hindi cinema; nearly forty years after the original Gabbar Singh gave millions of viewers the creeps, a film hero goes by the villain’s name.

Interestingly, the film is a remake of the Tamil film Ramana (by AR Murgadoss), which was remade in other languages with titles like Tagore, Vishnu Sena and Tiger.

In the Hindi version, the anticorruption vigilante protagonist goes by the name that is associated with that of a villain.

Amjad Khan’s Gabbar was inspired somewhat by Jabbar, played by Vinod Khanna in Raj Khosla’s Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), but so unique was Gabbar that when Amitabh Bachchan tried to get into his shoes in Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag (2007), an ill-advised remake of Sholay, he failed to recreate the Gabbar effect.

Ironically, Gabbar Singh became the film’s most popular character— even today, his lines are repeated in a kind of ongoing homage: Kitne aadmi the; Ab tere kya hoga Kaliya; Arey O Samba; Bahut yaarana lagta hai; Joh darr gaya ... samjho marr gaya and the one that best defines Gabbar’s arrogance Yahan se pachas pachas kos door gaon mein, jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, to maa kehti hai bete so ja ... so ja nahi to Gabbar Singh aa jayega.

Can a hero ever beat that?

eeping the Nepal quake victims in his prayers, megastar Amitabh Bachchan remembered his first trip to the Himalayan country in 1954, which was also his maiden visit to a foreign nation. The 72-yearold actor said during his growing years, Nepal was a dream geographical location and even though it was a foreign land, it had “several universal qualities with India”.

“I visited Nepal in 1954. We were still living in Allahabad...

Mahesh Bhatt refuses to blame distributor for ‘Mr X’ failure F ilmmaker Mahesh Bhatt says he will not blame the Fox Star Studio, the distributor of Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Mr X’, for the the film’s poor performance at the box office.

ollywood actress and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen has once again made her father proud and this time by acting in a Bengali film. “It was my father’s big dream that I do a Bengali film. It is a big moment for him,” Sen, whose debut Bengali film ‘Nirbaak’ (Speechless) releases this Friday, said.

The 39-year-old actress, who has starred in Hindi films like ‘No Problem’, ‘Main Hoon Na’ and ‘Biwi No 1’, said her father Shuber Sen always wanted her to act in Bengali films, something which never worked out for her. “He was very ecstatic when he heard that. He had watched Srijit’s films before and said he is a fantastic director and you must do his film,” she said.

Although born to Bengali parents in Hyderabad, the actress was worried about her command over the language while dubbing for the film directed by Srijit Mukherji. “I was scared whether I would be able to express myself in Bengali. The director made me do the dubbing like I was a child doing poetry recitation. He said every word has to be said exactly like a true Bengali,” she said.

Two-three years ago, she was in talks with the late maverick Bengali film director Rituparno Ghosh for a Bengali movie. “We were discussing a film but he left us before that happened. That was a film I would have done for sure. I will regret that. As a human being and as a director, both, he was honest, my kind of a person,” the actress said.

She is now discussing a project with another Bengali filmmaker Anjan Dutt.

Indian football is undergoing a transition and it feels nice that our development progress has rung bells all over the continent. I take this as a complement for Indian football,” he said.

Under Patel’s leadership, AIFF was awarded with AFC’s President Recognition Award for Grassroots at the AFC Annual Awards 2014 in Manila. Lahiri beats Palmer for winning debut in WGC Match Play S
