hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday claimed that the power sharing talks with the Shiv Sena were progressing satisfactorily and added that both the parties agreed on about 80 per cent of the contentious issues. Speaking to newspersons here, Sena president Uddhav Thackeray sarcastically remarked that “the Sena is trying to fill colours into the picture. Let us see what picture emerges.” Sources disclosed that both the estranged alliance partners were close to finalising the pact. Fadnavis is likely to call on party president Amit Shah in New Delhi to finalise the list of ministers to be sworn-in. Sources disclosed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has offered four cabinet minister rank berths and eight ministers of state rank berths to the Sena. It was further known that the four cabinet minister rank berths do not include key ministries like Home, Revenue and Urban Development. The Sena has been asked to choose from 17 portfolios like Health, Power, Tourism, Industry, Water Supply, MSRDC and Environment. The ministry sharing ratio has been fixed at two cabinet rank berths to one minister of state rank berth. That would mean out of the 36 cabinet ministers, the BJP will have 24 ministers and Sena 12.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis If the Sena agrees to the proposal and joins the government, eight to nine ministers from the BJP side would take oath of office during the swearing-in ceremony which is likely to be held some time this week. Sources added that in the first cabinet expansion, only two alliance parties of the Mahayuti alliance will be accommodated. The other two allies will be accommodated in the second expansion of the state cabinet. The Chief Minister stated that barring one or two issues, leaders from both the sides were in broad agreement over 80 per cent of the issues on agenda. Fadnavis stated that the BJP on its part has instructed its leaders not to make any out of turn comments about the talks. He urged Sena president Uddhav Thackeray to also direct his party leaders not to make any comments that would affect the talks. He added that only those who are authorised to speak to the media on the issue should speak.

Policy for of martyrs’ families soon, says CM

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said his government would frame a policy whereby certain privileges can be granted to the kin of posthumous recipients of bravery medals. The Chief Minister yesterday met families of martyrs of 26/11 terror attacks. Saying that other states grant some benefits to families of those who were awarded bravery medals posthumously, the CM said these schemes would be studied. Those present at the meeting included the wife of the senior police inspector Vijay Salaskar of Mumbai police who was killed during the attacks. Fadnavis also said that he would arrange a meeting with the Union Petroleum Minister regarding the issues faced by the kin of martyred officers.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's office is planning to create a channel on the popular video-sharing platform Youtube, and also to set up a twitter handle for disseminating information related to the state government. "The initiative for use of social media platforms on a larger scale is in the planning phase. Nitty-gritties are being worked out," said Nidhi Kamdar, officer on special duty at the Chief Minister's office. "Videos of the Chief Minister's speeches, functions would be uploaded on Youtube immediately. Information related to announcements by ministers or the CM would be linked to the new twitter handle.”

‘Personal staff of Cong-NCP ministers cannot work for new ministers’

The State government yesterday issued a directive prohibiting government employees who had worked with ministers in the Congress-NCP government as personal assistants or on some other posts from working with the current ministers. The Narendra Modi government at the Centre had issued a similar directive after NDA came to power. A government resolution (GR) issued by the General Administration Department of the state said, "Those who have worked as private secretary, officer on special duty or personal assistant with Chief Minister/ Deputy Chief Minister/ Ministers... In the last 10 years cannot work in the ministerial establishment for the next five years.

Water for everyone: State govt; BMC says not possible! Civic body opposes state’s plan to supply water to slums. Says the move will put a huge burden on the water distribution network in city By Khushboo Panjabi

E

xpressing the fear that it would lead to rise in illegal slums, Shiv Sena – the ruling party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) – has turned down civic administration’s proposal to provide water connections to all slums in the city. The BMC administration had proposed to provide water connections to all slums saying that water pilferage takes place in a big way in illegal slums. Due to this, the civic body also looses its rev-

enue and breaking of water mains leads to contamination. To prevent this, civic officials had proposed ‘water for everyone’ system by providing connections to illegal slums. However, Sena has vehemently opposed the proposal. “If we give water connections to all people, we have to provide even for people living on roads and pavements. We may have to provide water bills, which in future can be misused by ‘Water for everyone’ system illegal slum dwellers,” said civic would put a tremendous burden standing committee chairman on the water distribution network Yashodhar Phanse. in the city. Hence we have asked

the civic administration to prepare a comprehensive scheme to prevent water leakages and to ensure safety of water mains, he added. Six months ago, municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte had written to the state urban development department seeking permission to provide water connections to slums that had come up after 1995. His plea was accepted by the state government. There are about 65 lakh slum dwellers in the city. According to the civic data, BMC provides 3,750 million litres of

water per day to the city. However, 25-30 per cent of this water is wasted because of leakage and pilferage. On June 13, 1996, the urban development ministry directed the BMC not to give water connections to slums that had come up after January 1, 1995, the cut-off date for regularising slums. Due to this, a large number of slum dwellers were deprived of water connections and they turned to water mafias, who steal water from pipelines and sell it at a higher rate. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

n World AIDS Day, Mumbai AIDS Forum submitted a charter of demands to the Maharashtra state government and National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and the Ministry of Health. Its demands to the Government of Maharashtra are with regard to dealing with stock outs and ensuring regular supply of medicines in sufficient quantities and for the the Ministry of Health and NACO, its demands touch upon issues like need for better diagnostic measures and reforming its tender process. To act immediately for emergency procurement of medicines during stock-outs/shortages of HIV medicines at state level, reinstate regular monthly supply of first line and second line ARTs and pediatric medicines, ensure buffer stock of ARTs at state level, give two months medicine for first and second line ART, ensure regular supply of HIV testing kits, publicly display stock status of HIV medicines on a daily basis is what Mumbai AIDS Forum has demanded in the charter from the state government and its demands at the Central level are to ensure buffer stock of ARTs at cen-

Forum, “These demands are put forth to make sure that treatment of HIV affected people goes on without interruption because any interruption increases the chances of them becoming resistant to the first line drugs and then the need to be out on second line drugs arises. And it is very well known that access to second line drugs is not easy in our country.”

hile the state government has been initiating new schemes and facilities for the teachers, it has ignored a major facility that was approved for the students fives years ago. Considering the need for job-oriented courses, the state government had agreed to introduce 1,200 new classrooms for the ITI course, but no work has been taken-up by the government to start these classrooms yet. This has kept around 1 lakh students away from seeking admissions for the ITI courses across the state. The ITI course which offers various trends in technical education at a lower cost is taken up by most students who cannot afford courses like engineering and

tion (BMC), where it is the ruling party. According to party sources, efforts are on to provide free tablets to municipal students. Party chief Uddhav Thackeray has himself shown interest in the proposal and accordingly has held initial discussions with the civic administration. “The proposal was discussed in the meeting held at the mayor's bungalow last week. It has been proposed that students in municipal schools will be provided tabs. This would help these students to study in a better way. The entire syl-

labus can be accommodated in the tab. We are planning to provide the tab in all the eight languages, in which the BMC runs its schools,” said civic standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse. According to the civic officials, the project is still in the nascent stage, with the estimated cost of the project and its viability still to be formulated. The tabs may help students not to carry textbooks while going to schools. But we will also have to provide tabs to teachers so that they can teach students with the help of

projector, said a civic official. The civic body also provides 27 educational items free of cost to municipal students. In addition to this, a virtual classroom project has also been implemented in civic schools. Against the growing complaints of sub-standard educational items being provided, the BMC has also decided to carry out their third party audit. The civic body has decided to appoint All India Institute of Local Self Government for this task. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in Azad Shrivastav | ADC

higher technical education. Considering the increase in the admissions for ITI, five years ago the state government of Maharashtra had agreed to initiating additional 1,200 classrooms for the course. Each classroom with 25-30 students was to be started. The government had also made the aid available for these classrooms as well as the additional instruments and practical equipments needed for the ITI students were purchased. Even after this initiative, the Central Government Technical Education Department did not work upon this initiative. Anil Bornare, Chairman, Rajya Shikshak Parishad, Mumbai Division, said, “This let-go and sloppy attitude of the technical education department has risked the careers of around 1 lakh students. The newly formed government should look into this issue and resolve it as soon as possible. The aid, additional instruments and careers of the students have just been ignored by the officials of technical education department and a strict action should be taken against them.” Last Friday, Vinod Tawde, state minister of Education had declared medi-claim for the teachers. Tawde declared that teachers from government schools will be given a medi-claim of Rs 1 lakh. The ADC spoke to Ramnath Mote, Member of Legislative Council, Teachers Constituency, who said, “The carelessness of the technical education department has made lakhs of students lose their careers as the admissions had to be closed due to unavailability of classrooms. Even after the government had agreed upon starting 1,200 new classrooms, nothing has started yet. This issue will be raised in the winter sessions of the state Assembly and a demand for suspension of the officials involved in the delay of starting these classrooms will be made and these classrooms should be started as soon as possible.”

Year of political cartoons, this is!

The year 2014 has been important for the country in the sense that the country elected a new government after 15 years. The popular social media platforms were used widely to lure the youths. Similarly, this new media engaged millions of youths in the country to joke on politicians and the political system in very innovative ways. Social as well as print media used political cartoons continuously to make the elections high voltage and these platforms used cartoons as a tool to engage and get attached to the people at large. In the political season, some people fought to rule. Some people managed campaigns. Some people wrote about politics. Some people drew cartoons about politics and made us laughed uncontrollably, sparing neither Modi or Kejriwal or Uddhav – all were ridiculed. In the entire year, some cartoons were published or shared through new media which have criticised previous UPA government, and/or made a mockery of Rahul Gandhi etc. Cartoons once shared by some people on 'whatsapp' or 'Facebook' at large gave millions of likes. 'Funny Indians Political Cartoons' is one of the Facebook page which has got around 10,000 likes in a span of year. Likewise in Hindi there are popular sites like

'Bamulahija.com' and 'Santabanta.com' which are filled with shares, likes, remarks by millions of youths on a daily basis. Along with social networking sites print media also emphasises more on cartoons rather than only news. In a way, politics and cartoons had a direct relation for so many years. Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray started 'Marmik', a marathi weekly magazine which was primarily a political cartoon magazine. It not only mocked the politicians but made readers laughed loudly for the satirical caricature lines. Similarly, MNS chief Raj Thackeray also draws many political satirical cartoons through his brush. Newly elected MLA Nitesh Rane always draws cartoons to mock and criticise his political opponents in 'Yuva', a Marathi fortnightly magazine for youths. It says that a picture or a photo speaks 1,000 words. But if we see the scenario in the last year, during the elections, we can certainly point out that in lieu of the photos, this time political and satirical cartoons played a major role and

The tiniest land ownership ever – 500 sq inches

We recently heard from an amused friend in the USA about an

interesting story of a land ownership. What is different about this piece of land is that it is just 500 square inches. Yes, you read it right. An isosceles triangle measuring just that much. The background we hear goes thus. At the point where Christopher Street meets Seventh Avenue South in New York's west village area, there's a small mosaic triangle set into the sidewalk. It reads, "Property of the Hess Estate Which Has Never Been Dedicated for Public Purposes." It commemorates one man's stubborn real estate standoff against city officials. Back in the 1910s, a great swath was being cut diagonally across the village to extend Seventh Avenue below Greenwich Avenue and to allow the IRT subway to move farther downtown. Using power, the city decisively condemned and demolished 300 pieces of property, including a fivestory residential building called the Voorhis Apartment, owned by a David Hess. Somehow, when all was said and done, Hess was left owning a small triangle of land. To add insult to injury, the city wanted him to "donate" the parcel, which would be incorporated into a new sidewalk. Hess refused. He defied municipal bullying and went to

court to assert his rights. By the time the case was settled, "The D H Hess Estate of Philadelphia" was the obstinate owner of approximately 500 square inches of useless surface area. But they made the most of it (symbolically speaking) when, on July 27, 1922, workers used black and yellow tile to create a defiant shoe-level inscription – which still exists today in its cracked, worn

and eloquent state. This proud plot remained the smallest piece of property in New York City well into the 1930s. Figuring the point had been made, the estate sold the tiny triangle to the owners of the adjacent cigar store in 1938 for USD 1,000. Today it remains a curious geometric reminder of a case where private property faced off against "progress" and came out winner. Azad Shrivastav | ADC

ven as the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) claims to have taken steps to curb the banner menace, including the launch of a helpline number to facilitate citizens to register complaints against the illegal publicity stunts, hundreds of banners continue to deface twin-city’s skyline. The 24x7 helpline 1800-224-859 was started by the MBMC following directive from the Bombay High Court in response to a Public Inter-

However, birthday banners can be seen installed at each nook and cranny of the twincity including trees and traffic signals without permission from civic agencies and traffic police personnel. “Apart from the helpline number, we have also set up ward-level citizen committees and appointed nodal officers for curbing illegal hoardings. While instructions have been given to intensify the antibanner drive, criminal offences have also been registered against those who were found defacing the city,” said Municipal Commissioner Subhash Lakhe. It has become a trend for political workers to install hoardings of their leaders on festive occasions, birthdays or appointment on key posts in their parties.

ter session in Nagpur. If the motion is passed, then only we will be able to stake claim for the post. Significantly, in the house of 78, NCP has 28 members, while Congress has 21, BJP 14 and Shiv Sena 8 and seven members are independent. If BJP extends support to NCP, then it should not be difficult to pass the no confidence motion against Deshmukh. On the leader of opposition post too, on the basis of the majority in the upper house, NCP will stake claim. Senior NCP leaders Hemant Takle and Ramraje Nimbalkar are in the race for council chairman's post, while state NCP president Sunil Tatkare is likely to be the new leader of opposition. The NCP president, Sharad Pawar will take the final decision within a day or two. This has virtually created a flutter in the Congress circle. The party was expecting such move by its old partner. When contacted, the state Congress president Manikrao Thakre said, I am not surprised over NCP's move to stake claim for the chairman's post. Since NCP has extended support to BJP, we are not surprised over its move.”

T

he NCP has its own way of manipulating things. This time around the party is planing to use these tactics in the legislative council. NCP is all set to stake claim for legislative council chairman as well as leader of opposition post (LoP) in the upper house. As a result a precarious situation seems to be inevitable in the council during the winter session starting from December 8. NCP, the erstwhile alliance partner of the Congress, first extended unconditional support to the minority BJP government in the name of stability. Now the party is eying both the posts in the council. Senior Congress leader Shivajirao Deshmukh is presently the council chairman, while the post of leader of opposition is lying vacant following induction of Vinod Tawde in the state cabinet.A senior NCP leader and former minister on condition of anonymity said, that there is a move to stake claim for the chairman's post and for this the party will have to move a no confidence motion against Deshmukh during the win-

Distressed over crop failure, farmer lights own funeral pyre N

AGPUR: A 75-year-old farmer, distressed over crop failure, allegedly ended his life by lighting his own funeral pyre at a village in Akola district, police said on Monday. Kashiram Bhagwan Indare, who had one acre of land at Manarkhed village in Balapur taluka, was depressed over the failure of cotton and soyabean crops due to inadequate rains in the droughtprone district of Vidarbha, which has gained infamy for farmer suicides. On Friday last, Indare built a pyre in his field and set it afire, Investigating Officer Mohan Khandare told PTI. Ruling out any foul play in the incident, Khandare said the elderly farmer, during conversation with his wife, often talked about "his agony and frustrated state of mind". Three days back, when he did not return home from the field, a search was launched by his son and other villagers who found him charred to death. No suicide note was found. Police

have registered a case of accidental death, Khandare said. Meanwhile, seven more suicides by debt-ridden farmers were reported in the last two days from Vidarbha, which was toured by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis last week, according to Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti (VJS), an NGO which has been tracking such deaths. With these deaths, the number of farmer suicides in the cotton belt, facing water scarcity and agrarian crisis, has gone up to 1,022 till now this year, claimed Samiti's President Kishore Tiwari. A delegation of farmers led by Tiwari had met Fadnavis in Amravati last week and presented a list of demands. They demanded Rs.25,000 per hectare compensation for crop failure, complete waiver of crop loans, 100-day wage subsidy under MGNREGA to drought-hit farmers, and free food, health and education facilities for drought-hit families of the region.

22-year-old well-to-do youth, has been arrested by Kasturba Marg Police, who robbed 5S iPhones from collegians. Police said the accused used an E-commerce website for committing the crime and fled with the phones. The accused then sold the phones to friends and spent all the money on bargirls. The accused, identified as Prem Shah (22) alias Ansh resided in a 3BHK apartment in Krishna Darshan Society at Kora Kendra at Borivli (West). His father runs a marketing company in Mumbai and his mother is a home maker. Shah's first target was Gaurang Prakash Jawde (22) who is a student and resident of Vasai, and another victim was Rahul Thakkar (22) who is a resident of Borivli. Both vic-

Prem Shah alias Ansh tims are collegians and both were cheated at the same spot by the accused. According to the police, “On Wednesday morning the accused called the victim

Man sentenced for contempt of court By Philip Varghese

T

he Bombay High Court on Monday sentenced a man to one-month simple imprisonment after holding him guilty of contempt of court for posting malicious content against the judicial system on social networking sites. The division bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice Anuja Prabhudessai stayed their order to enable Dwarka Hiranandani (56) to appeal against it. The bench directed the state to arrest him after the appeal period is over. “You don't have any right to scandalise the judiciary,” the judges told Hiranandani, who urged the court to show mercy to him saying he is the real victim. The court heard a contempt petition filed by Hirandani's sister-in-law Anita against him, his wife Duru and son Sunil in their dispute over a flat at Lokhandwala, Andheri (W). Her petition said that the High Court had transferred Dwarka's civil suit to the City Civil Court but Hiranandani has been making scandalous allegations against not only the judges and the judicial system but even the advocates who appeared in the matter. The advocate general on December 2013 granted her permission to invoke the Contempt of the Court Act. In January 2014, a magistrate noted there was continuous maligning of the judicial system. Anita's advocate H S Shri-

pad Murthy argued that Hiranandani has even posted these “scandalous allegations” on social media websites. He, however, said his client does not intend to press the contempt charge against Duru who is a housewife and Sunil who works abroad as their actions are at the behest of Hiranandani.

Gaurang Jawde to Raj Hill Society in Carter Road at Borivli (East) to purchase iPhone 5S through an E-commerce website. At the building, the accused Shah purchased the phone for Rs 40,000 and told Jawde to wait downstairs and he will bring the money from his home on the 6th floor and also show the mobile phone to his mother at home. “Jawde gave his mobile phone to Shah and waited downstairs for more than 15 minutes while Shah fled from the 1st floor through the parking lot which is directly connected to the road, with Jawde's iPhone. When Jawde realised that he has been cheated and robbed he lodged a FIR on the same day with the Kasturba Marg Police Station at Borivli (East). The whole incident was captured on CCTV cameras which were fitted in the soci-

ety. On the Call Details Record of the victim Jawde, the accused's number was seen and the police arrested the accused from his residential address. After the incident came to light on Saturday evening, one more FIR was registered by Rahul Thakkar (22) who is a resident of Borivli against the accused. Thakkar told the police that he was cheated in the same place through the same modus operandi. “The accused was a dropout and from a good family. He used to cheat people through same modus operandi and allegedly spent the money on bar girls. Police suspect that the accused has committed more such crimes in other places, especially Powai, because they have received many complaints from there,” a police official said.

A

six-month-old baby boy was found by a couple on the Kalwa railway station on Monday evening. The child was handed over to the station master, who contacted the Kalwa police station to take charge of the child. The police officers however refused to oblige after which the station master wrote a letter to the CPU (Child Protection Unit). Sanjay Gupta, station master, Kalwa railway station, said, "At around 4 pm, a couple came with the child complaining that they had found it on the road near the railway station.” “With help from a member of the NGO, Salaam Balak Trust, Laxmi Sakat, who works for this cause in Thane, we wrote the letter to the CPU department, Thane, requesting them to

take charge of this child,” Gupta added. The child was handed over to the Kalwa police station later and is under going medical treatment at the Chatrapati Shivaji Hospital, Kalwa. Senior police inspector, CPU, Thane, Madan Ballal said, "The child is still under the custody of Kalwa police station. He will soon be shifted to the CPU department and we will investigate accordingly.”

WORLD AIDS DAY... More than 300 people living with HIV (PLHIV) and public health activists marched from NN College of Social Work to Azad Maidan on the occasion of World AIDS Day on Monday to highlight the 'high levels' of stock-outs and shortages of HIV medicines and tools in the state. “Mumbai alone has over 50,000 PLHIVs who depend on government-run centres for their antiretroviral therapy. We are witnessing the impact of stockouts firsthand on them. Many are facing problems at their place of employment as they have to frequently be absent from work to come to the ART centre, said Krishnakant, co-ordinator of Chirag, an NGO providing support to HIV+ patients in JJ Hospital. The march was organised by Mumbai AIDS Forum -- a network of more than 30 civil society organisations including individual activists living with HIV in Mumbai.

End disputes over fishing rights E

VERY now and then, there is an announcement by Sri Lanka about the arrest of Indian fishermen. The charge by Sri Lanka is that our fishermen stray into their waters and carry on fishing. Each time the fishermen are caught and locked up, there is a furore in Tamil Nadu. When some fishermen were found with drugs, they were tried by a court and sentenced to death as per the rule of the land. As usual, in Tamil Nadu, there was huge protest. Our government took up the matter with Sri Lanka’s president: the five fishermen were released and sent back to India. Would any other country have done this? Sri Lanka is very much interested in keeping good relations with India. Two neighbours cannot keep dwelling on some unpleasant happenings of the past endlessly. Tamil Nadu should forget about what happened to LTTE. Sri Lanka is now our close friend and neighbour. The Centre should have taken up the issue regarding fishermen straying into Sri Lanka waters long ago. Of course, our fishermen must get all possible help from the Centre. What is needed perhaps is a joint inquiry regarding fishing rights of the two countries. Steps can also be initiated to produce an agreement which lays down mutually worked out rules to avoid disputes and arrests.

Y any yardstick, the participation of US President Barrack Obama at the Republic Day parade on January 26, is the recognition of India’s growing structure. His phone call to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was, no doubt, an effort to make amends of sorts. But it does not hide the fact that Washington has chosen New Delhi as its partner to advance the policies and programmes it has in view in this part of the world. Washington is for free enterprise and leads the capitalist world. Its policies are aimed at benefitting big enterprises and the rich. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has a tailormade partner. Even the right of centre, Obama looks liberal compared to Modi. Why the two have joined hands is not for economic reasons, although New Delhi will benefit because the American industry is bound to make way towards India. The real reason is what is hawked about as the strategic partnership. America wants to sell weapons an underpin of its industrial growth. India is famished of advanced military technology and hopes to get from the America-led West.

Post-Bofors guns Why New Delhi has bought the post-Bofors guns at an exorbitant price of some Rs.15,000 crore is because of its insistence that the suppliers put up the manufacturing plant in India. Since the country faces an attack on two fronts at the same time, as National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has warned, it is frantic to have weapons from whatever source it can obtain. Fortunately, Russia is still India’s dependent supplier and does not mind the purchase from the West as it used to be the case in the past. And New Delhi has gained from this. Obama, no doubt, likes democratic India, however disorderly. But his main purpose is to span the distance between India and Pakistan. He does not like the way in which the Taliban are proliferating in Afghanistan and to some extent in Pakistan. True, Islamabad is itself to blame for creating the Frankenstein, but it never expected the Taliban to invade it first. With the outside Taliban, supported by the home grown crop, Pakistan has become in the eyes of world an ‘epicenter of terrorism’. How does Washington wish if the democratic India could join the fight against the Taliban. But rightly does not want to commit

its forces in that area knowing how America bled in Vietnam when it joined the war there. The fundamentalists in the area may find it a God sent opportunity to launch a jehad against the infidels. There is no prospect of India and Pakistan normalizing their relations till they shed mistrust in each other. It has not happened since the Partition of India some 70 years ago. It was sad to see how Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan avoided each other at the SAARC summit at Kathmandu. I recall the founder of Pakistan Quaid-eAzam Mohammad Ali Jinnah saying more

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar than once before he won a ‘home land for the Muslims’ that the two countries would live like the US and Canada. Although he had propagated the two-nation theory, he did not want religion to be mixed with politics after the Partition. That was probably the reason he never wanted the migration of population after the creation of Pakistan. To put the blame of enmity between the two countries on Pakistan alone would be unfair. The Congress accepted the Partition formula even though Mahatma Gandhi had warned that the Partition would be on his dead body. Keeping that spirit alive, India went for a rule of the Constitution which knows no of parochialism and treats every person, belonging to any religion, an equal citizen with all the rights. No doubt, India is a secular state but lately it tends to be tilting towards Hindutva. This is dangerous fallout of the Modi phenomena who is an old RSS pracharak (preacher). True, the Hindus and the Muslims in India are equal before the law. Yet the contamination of civil services, particularly of the police

The spirit of religion should give happiness

has taken a toll; the force sees to it that the Hindus have the last word. Since I cannot put myself in the shoes of Muslims, however hard I may try, I do see that the phenomena of Modi has worked in favour of Hindutva. He is making it hard for the Muslims and the liberals to accept him when he continues to seek the RSS leadership for advice. This may well be the reason why RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat has announced with pride that the Hindu raj has returned after 800 years. He forgets that India is ruled by the Constitution even though the Hindus are in a majority. I wish the new generation of Hindus realizes this and goes out of the way to reach the Muslims and other minorities. Sadly, this is not the case. Unfortunately, Pakistan is brought in all the time in discussions. Things are different. That country has opted for Islam which is the State’s religion. India, nurtured in the atmosphere of the national struggle, led by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, could not have accepted anything except the ethos of independence movement, the pluralism. The Muslim League acted differently. It appealed in the name of Islam and mixed religion with politics. Unfortunately, Islamabad still does the same.

Ethos of secularism The Modi phenomena reminds me of those days when every Muslim was expected to be a member of the Muslim League and a supporter of Pakistan. The BJP’s propaganda is similar. This is a betrayal of the national struggle and its ethos of secularism. Why does not Modi ever recall those days during his speeches to remind the nation of its diversity and still the sentiment of togetherness running all through. Modi can at least suggest some reforms in Hinduism which continues to follow the archaic customs and inhuman traditions. The stigma of caste still besmears the face of Hindu religion. I have never heard even a word against such a practice from the BJP leaders. Only a few days ago, did a girl marry her boyfriend belonging to a different caste in a temple. She was strangled to death by the parents themselves. I do not know why such murders are called the honour killing. They should be called ‘criminal killing’.

Where are the ‘acche din’?

THE Narendra Modi government is enjoying the 'honeymoon phase', and people will soon start reacting to their failures as soon as they end their honymoon. The Central government has failed to deliver the promises it made during the Lok Sabha elections and betrayed the trust and faith of the people. The present government is no different from the former UPAled formation. “Modi used to call former Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) as ‘maun’ Mohan, but you see the current PM, most of the time when he speaks, he is outside the country and boasts about his image only. The BJP’s slogan of 'acche din' was just an election gimmick. International oil prices are being slashed by 50 per cent, but the actual benefit that percolates down to the people is just to the tune of 10 per cent, and the Union government is busy helping the capitalists, and corporate media. It is high time that the Narendra Modi government must come out from the honeymoon situation and face the reality and start working and producing results rather than misleading people with false promises.

dian civilians at the Line of Control through a proxy war, it proves that Pakistan is not interested in peace talks with India. Under these circumstances how are cordial relations even thinkable? Pakistan is a proven enemy of India and peace in the world. Ratan Tata has already severed its business relations with Pakistan. The attitude and decision of Rattan Tata is very practical and blunt which Indian government must follow at least in practical way if not in theory. In fact, its membership from SAARC must be removed forever. All political and diplomatic relations must be severed for all time to come, till Pakistan proves its worth to have meaningful relations with India. Pakistan does not understand that unless it takes interest in its economic development, by all means it shall continue to be a poor and weak country and for this Pakistan must take adequate steps to eliminate terrorism activities from its soil forever. Such practical results must be shown to the entire world. — Mahesh Kumar, New Delhi

money to set up an effluent treatment plant and a recurring expense to operate and maintain it. Even worse from the factory owner's point of view, it provides no financial returns – and that is all that matters. Trifles like civic responsibility and ethics are alien concepts to him. Much cheaper to bribe a few officials and avoid the expenses altogether. Incidental the officials and politicians who now pretend to be outraged, must have been aware of this violation for years. An effluent treatment plant comprises large ponds and cannot be hidden away. However, as long as their pockets are lined, they couldn't give a damn. It is only when a catastrophe like this occurs that they are forced to pretend to take action. Also the action is likely to be equally cosmetic. Undemocratic IT is shocking to note that the 2.5 acre Podar Mill plot in Lower Parel and the 10-acre Digvijay mill at Lalbaug are among the dozen-odd mill properties across the country that the Centre is eying. Although the Supreme Court had already ruled in favour of Podar Mill and directed the government-owned National Textiles Corporation (NTC) to vacate the property, it was painful to read that to circumvent the Apex court order, the Centre passed an ordinance and plans to introduce the Textile Undertakings (Nationalisation) Laws (Amendment and Validation) Bill in Parliament. Such a step by the Centre is bad in the eyes of the law. Good entertainment IT is true that Mumbai has heaps of enjoyment. Now we have one more addition – Adlabs IMAGICA, that is few kilometres away from the city near Khopoli. The amusement park has a theme park which is a good idea in the view of entertainment. I went to visit the park last week, where I experienced a couple of bad things – a power failure, during the time, spoils one’s valuable time. We wasted almost more than 30 minutes. The co-ordination among the guides, supposed to be well trained, was poor. They should tell the visitors, how one could save their valuable time, rather than wait for their turn at one place or for one ride, they can visit other ride or theme park. I hope in the coming time the park would do well and shall try to eliminate theses glitches. — Bhavesh Jani, Nalasopara (E)

Inadequate teaching staff also impacts civic schools in Mira-Bhayandar

By Suresh Golani

E

ven as the civic authorities boast of its efforts towards upgrading the standard of education at par with private institutions, physical fitness seems to have been grossly ignored. This is evident by the fact that more than 9,500 students studying in civic schools operated by the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal

Corporation (MBMC) in the twincity are without a single Physical Training (PT) instructor. This despite of the fact that childhood fitness is an emerging area of public health concern. The PT classes which have found a slot in the students' daily timetable, has been reduced to a symbolic period as there is no qualified instructor for the purpose and the onus of han-

dling the PT period rests on the shoulders of the regular DEd teachers. “It is true that we don’t have PT teachers on our roll, but the situation prevails across the state. However, as per the Right to Education (RTE) guidelines, the district administration is in the process of recruiting teachers for extra-curricular activities which includes PT,” confirmed MBMC edu-

cation officer Suresh Deshmukh. Apart from this, as many as 11 teacher posts are lying vacant, as there has been no recruitment for the past couple of years. While the sanctioned strength is 202, only 191 teachers are presently working in the civic-runs school, which is in sharp contrast to the RTE guidelines which mandates around 280 teachers as per the recently revised

Pupil-Teacher ratio. At present around 9,500 students are enrolled with 35 civic-operated schools in the Mira Bhayandar region which impart education in Marathi, Urdu, Hindi and Gujarati. While six schools have been elevated till Class VIII, semi-English mode of education has been introduced up to Class V from the current academic session.

Bank unions on relay strike after talks fail Eastern Press Assn. organises B

anking services are likely to be affected for the next four days as employees of PSU banks plan to go on a zone-wise relay strike beginning with Southern region from Tuesday, after wage revision talks failed yesterday. The decision came after talks at a conciliation meeting called by the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner of Mumbai, the Indian Banking Association (IBA) and the United Forum of Banking Unions (UFBU) failed. The UFBU represents about five workmen unions and four officers' associations. Accordingly, the first phase of the relay strike would be held in Southern India tomorrow (December 2), followed by Northern

India on December 3, Eastern India on December 4 and Western India on December 5. "The government and the IBA want us to call off our strike and then participate in negotiations, which is not acceptable to us," UFBU's convener for Maharashtra Vishwas Utagi told PTI. "They are not serious about wage revisions and so we are going ahead with our relay strike," Utagi, who is also senior vice-president of the All India Bank Employees' Association said. Bank unions, which have demanded an immediate wage revision, had observed a national one-day strike on November 12. Besides wage revision,

bank unions have also demanded a reduction in the number of working days of employees to five days from six days as well as regulated working hours for officers. Banking sector wages and service conditions are governed by industry-level bipartite settlements signed between the IBA and unions. The last bipartite settlement was signed on April 27, 2010 and was valid from November 1, 2007 to October 31, 2012. All banks which gave mandate to the IBA to negotiate on their behalf are parties to the settlement. However, the IBA appealed to bank unions yesterday, to call off the strike, urging them to return to the negotiation table.

From clenching your fist and sipping on wine, to dipping your feet in vodka, research has thrown some rather odd remedies our way over time. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Yamini Walia ask a few doctors what their verdict is on some of the most applauded ones

Sing your Sleep apnea away

>> Sunlight can help prevent joint pain. Our article tells you more about such remedies and whether they work

Can’t sleep well at night? Several studies suggest that singing can help you deal with sleep apnea, which is a type of sleep disorder where shallow or interrupted breathing patterns interrupt your sleep. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should go ahead and belt out your favourite song in the middle of the night, waking up all your neighbours! A study undertaken by the Exeter University and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust worked on a theory created by singing teacher Alise Ojay, who suggested that certain vocal exercises could help deal with the problem. Don’t expect to sing yourself to sleep though. The method is a daily programme and you will see results only after around three months. n Doctor speak: Dr. Seema Anand, a specialist in alternate medicine, tells us, “Sleep apnea is caused because of your muscles relaxing when you sleep. Singing strengthens these muscles, making it an excellent exercise.” n The verdict: It works!

However, being a night owl when you’ve already got a day schedule in place can really mess up your system, so we’re big fans of making sure it doesn’t. A study done by San Diego’s University of California however, found that PMS-prone women who switch their sleep schedules around to sleeping early during the day and then staying up throughout the night until morning, found that they were actually able to ease symptoms of PMS — if you do this just once a month that is. The study explains that PMS disrupts your sleep cycle anyway, so switching it around, could help reboot your body clock. n Doctor speak:We were really excited about this remedy, but family physician Dr. Krishnakant Dhebri seems sceptical. He explains, “Your body requires at least seven hours of sleep every night and a regular sleep cycle is important. Staying up through

There’s always been several reasons to soak in some sun and now, there’s another. Several studies show that the vitamin D content in sunlight helps your body to steer clear of muscle and joint inflammation. So, the next time you feel a little ache in your bones, step outside instead of running to the doctor. n Doctor speak: Dr. P. P. use voDka on your feet The reason behind this one is that it contains alcohol, which after all, is an antiseptic. It is believed that using vodka can destroy all the fungus and bacteria that usually causes smelly feet, helping them stay stench-free. Don’t dip your feet in vodka though! Simply wipe them down with a cloth that’s been soaked in it. n Doctor speak: We were all set to try this one out, but Dr. Krishnakant doesn’t approve of the remedy. He says, “This seems like a marketing gimmick. Wear cotton socks to avoid smelly feet.” n The verdict: There’s no harm in trying, but don’t depend on it.

Cure an earaChe with onions

Continued from pg 13 « n Doctor speak: Dr. Krishnakant however, wasn’t convinced. He told us, “The same principle of using fat-free products for good health, applies to this. If you don’t want to face problems at a later stage in your life, steer clear of full-fat dairy products.” n The verdict: There’s no need to go cold turkey on dairy, but this remedy may not be a good idea to practice religiously.

ClenCh your fist to fight your Cravings We’ve heard of this one several times before, and we’ve even tried it out! It works for some of us, but for most part, it doesn’t seem to do the trick. Studies suggest that clenching your fist and tightening your muscles actually raises your willpower for several minutes, making it easy to fight off cravings. n Doctor speak: Dr. Seema agrees with the research, telling us, “A clenched fist helps to release excessive emotion, and works similarly with cravings.” n the verdict:We’re going to keep trying this one. You should too.

A few studies and books such as Be Your Own Doctor, recommend a bizarre remedy to cure an ear ache. You’re told to hold half an onion against your ear — as it is or wrapped in a piece of cloth. Some old wives’ tales even recommend squeezing the juice into your ear! The remedy is said to work after 15-20 minutes, but all we’re wondering, is how long the smell lingers... n Doctor speak: Dr. Krishnakant explains, “I wouldn’t recommend onions to cure an earache as they are very pungent. If they’re not used in the right proportion, they can cause severe damage.” n the verdict: Don’t bother with this iffy remedy — you’ll save yourself from some pretty bad BO too! glass of wine instead! According to their research, a few sips of red wine can fill your body with polyphenols that stop bacteria from harming your gums, while the acid present in wine kills bacteria. n Doctor speak: Dr. Krishnakant says, “Alcohol in any form is not good for your body in the long run — even red wine. If you’re trying to be healthy, pick grapes, fruit juices or just plain mineral water. In worst a worst case scenario, visit your doctor!” n the verdict: Drink a glass at a party, but save the gum remedies for your dentist.

have a Cup of Joe when you’re feeling blue A cup of coffee can help you get through a tough day at work, a long night of research, wake you up on a dull afternoon... and now, research claims it can also make you feel happier! A Harvard study found that people who drank coffee were less depressed than those who didn’t. That’s a good enough reason for us to continue with our daily cup(s)! n Doctor speak: Dr. Seema agrees, explaining, “Due to its caffeine content, coffee is definitely a mood booster. So, it can help beat the blues.” Beware though, as it’s also an appetite reducer. n the verdict: It works!

Cure a fever with wet soCks When we first read about this, we thought it was pretty crazy. But, then we read more about what it actually does. The method is a waterbased therapy, where you wear ice-cold socks, then put dry ones over them and go to sleep. At first, it sounds like it could give you a cold, but apparently, it keeps your body temperature balanced because it increases circulation. We’re still a bit sceptical, but it seems like a logical remedy. n Doctor speak: Dr. Krishnakant solves all the confusion by telling us that this does in fact work. He explains, “Sponging is how you cure a fever in the first place. So, this definitely holds true as the water from your body will evaporate and your body temperature will come down.” n the verdict: Strange as it may seem — this one actually works!

Sounds pretty convenient, doesn’t it? n Doctor speak: Dr. Seema explains, “Since I was little, my grandmother always advised me to use tea leaves to heal burns. Today, research is proving that black tea contains ingredients that draw the heat out of a burn.” n the verdict: It could work.

use toothpaste on bug bites The next time you get a bug bite, steer clear of your medicine cabinet and head to the bathroom instead. Toothpaste has been said to alleviate the effects of pesky bites and stings, stopping the itching as well as decreasing any swelling that may have arisen because of it. It also helps the wound dry up and disappear faster. n Doctor speak: Although you have to be careful not to burn your skin by using too much toothpaste, Dr. Seema says that there’s nothing wrong with trying this home remedy. “Peppermint is usually an ingredient in most toothpastes, which makes them effective at healing stings, bites and zits.” n the verdict: If your toothpaste has peppermint, it could work! >> Can you drink full-fat milk to stablise blood sugar? Don’t Do this at home

>> Dirty socks around our necks to cure a throat ache? No thanks!

While most of the remedies we’ve given you are easy to try, you may want to stay clear of the following. Some are old wives’ tales, while others are still floating around as remedies, but we’re sure that you’re not going to want to try them after reading about them. Take a look: n urine to treat acne: This shouldn’t be your new face wash, even if you’re suffering from acne. How does it work? Well, it is used just like a toner — apply a little urine on a cotton ball and dab it on your face. Some advocates of urotherapy also suggest drinking this fluid to treat acne. But, it has neither been studied nor do we feel tempted to try it.

n Chicken gizzard tea to cure diarrhoea: Cut the lining from a chicken gizzard and let it dry. Then, put it in boiling water to make tea. Give 1tsp of this tea to your baby every half hour. Or don’t. We don’t think you should risk ruining their health even if they do suffer from diarrhoea. Concentrate on helping them drinking more water during the day instead. n earwax to cure cold sores: One word — Gross! Cold sores can be painful and unsightly. But, that doesn’t mean that you should resort to wacky methods such as applying earwax on them. Instead, use a sea salt or aloe vera gel to cure this problem at home.

n Dirty socks around your throat to cure a throat ache: If you’ve got a throat ache, go ahead and have it checked by a doctor. Don’t torture people around you by wrapping dirty socks around your throat. It definitely seems like an age-old remedy to drive people away, rather than curing their throat aches. n blow tobacco smoke into your ear to cure an ear ache: We think this is equal parts weird and disgusting! There’s no science to support this. We request you avoid trying this at home, even if you are tempted to be like Elvis Presley’s mother, who relied on this remedy whenever he suffered from an earache as a child.

Grocery stores can be tempting, with a variety of food lining the shelves from floor to ceiling. Shirley Mistry suggests you follow these tips to ensure that your shopping cart stays healthy

I

love visiting grocery stores. Not local shops, but supermarkets and gourmet stores, where I can actually get behind the counter and examine each item to my heart’s content before tossing it into my cart. That being said, shopping at one of these well-stocked stores for food can quickly spiral into a food disaster. Cute packaging, delicious treats and attractive pricing is often all it takes for you to pick an item, without giving its nutritional content a thought. But, the next time you are at a grocery store, follow our simple rules to ensure that you’re taking home healthy food.

Make iT Colourful Ensure that your cart has at least five colours in it. And by five colours, we mean five items of fresh produce, not rainbow coloured candy! The more colourful your cart is, the more nutrients you will consume. So, pick up some greens, carrots, bananas, turnips — whatever you fancy. But, ensure that your cart isn’t dominated by just one colour. Of course, to get the actual benefits from this spectrum of colourful produce, ensure that you pair them with healthy ingredients. Carrots aren’t going to be healthy anymore if you boil them to an inch of their life before dousing them with melted butter.

The oTher sTuff Apart from fresh vegetables and fruit, you are also going to need bread, spices, sauces, cereal and snacks. These aisles at the supermarket are packed with options, so the best way to ensure that you don’t succumb to temptation and make unhealthy choices is by thoroughly reading the ingredients list. While parmesan crackers might sound like a moderately healthy snack, the

only way to find out if they are really healthy is by checking the ingredients. These items should have no more than 5-6 ingredients. The longer the ingredients list is, the more additives, preservatives, refined flour and sugar the item contains. Also, phrases such as ‘contains whole wheat’ might make the item seem healthy, but always check the ingredients to see what percentage of whole wheat it actually contains. If it is between 5%-10%, it is nothing but a marketing gimmick. >> Load up your cart with different colours

reduces your risk of suffering from heart disease and diabetes, making it worth the effort.

single servings Okay, so we understand that you are easily swayed by all the aisles housing delicious treats and we aren’t asking you to give up on them entirely. You are harbouring unrealistic expectations if you think that you are going to leave a super market with just fresh fruits and vegetables. So, when you do venture into these aisles, here’s a rule to bear in mind: pick up just a single serving of your favourite treat. A pack of two cookies is going to cause far less damage than a super-sized pack that is good enough to keep a motley of people thriving for a few days. And, if you think that you aren’t going to be satisfied with your treat, a 2013 study found that people were equally satisfied with just a bite of their favourite treat, as compared to their counterparts who ate larger, calorie-rich portions.

sTiCk To The BasiCs

Whole grain goodness This rule is a good one to follow, especially if you are looking to streamline your diet and lose weight. Ensure that all carbohydrates come from whole grains. Whether it’s bread, biscuits or pasta, this is an easy rule to follow and will immediately eliminate your cravings for unhealthy snacks that creep up on you. Another nifty tip is to replace white rice with brown rice. Although this simple switch will take some getting used to in terms of taste, it

When it comes to beverages, the options are limitless and undeniably delicious. Juice blends, smoothies, milkshakes and of course, countless varieties of cola. But, they are all chockfull of artificial flavours, additives, preservatives and heaps of sugar, despite the ‘real fruit goodness’ claim that most packaged juices bear. So, stick to cold-pressed fresh juice, tea, coffee and an electrolyte-based beverage or diet cola if you just can’t resist temptation. But, avoid syrupy, sweet drinks and of course, energy drinks that come with a host of side effects including insomnia, nervousness and jittery feelings.

The TasTe TesT n Conference Pears:Not only were these pears actually sweeter than their traditional counterparts, they were also much larger — which made them a filling snack. they were very flavourful, which was a pleasant change from the usual, juicy but tasteless pear that’s largely available in the market. Those who don’t like a farm-fresh, green flavour will enjoy them more after peeling off the skin. n Joly Apples: You can tell that these apples are devoid of the usual waxed skin the minute you bite into them. They are definitely sweeter, as promised, but that’s both a good and bad thing. We love the tart crunchiness of apples and are not so fond of sweeter, softer varieties. The Joly apple has the crunchiness going for it, but you may want to start with half an apple if you aren’t too fond of sweet ones, because the crisp apple can get a little too sweet by the end. It’s enjoyable cut up, in smaller quantities — though that may just be a personal preference. >> Find out what we think of the newly introduced apples and pears

Get more sun UV rays present in sunlight slow down the growth of your skin cells, which is why they are considered to be harmful. But, with psoriasis, they can actually benefit you, as long as you don’t go overboard. Soak up around 20 minutes of sun every day — this will slow down the condition and make dealing with the problem easier.

2 Check your medication Certain types of medication can accelerate the flare-up of psoriasis. Common suspects include medicines that contain lithium, propranolol and quinidine. Whatever medication you’re taking (even if it’s an over-the-counter drug) make sure that you check with your doctor, to verify whether it is safe for you.

3

Vitamin D supplements Vitamin D is an important nutrient that helps prevent psoriasis. However, if you’re not getting enough vitamin D naturally (through sunlight), you might need to opt for supplements. Apart from psoriasis, vitamin D supplements also help treat arthritis and joint pain.

Hydrate your skin Dry skin is one of the most common causes of psoriasis flare-ups. So, ensure that you moisturise your skin, and keep a lotion handy so that you can treat dryness immediately. Thick moisturising creams such as petroleum jelly are the best option as they are better at trapping the moisture in your skin.

Dead Sea salt If you’re open to experimentation, try having a bath with Dead Sea salts. The Dead Sea has always been a popular destination for those suffering from psoriasis, as it is believed to heal the condition with its salty, warm water. We aren’t asking you to take a trip there — you get packaged Dead Sea salt (online retailers have several options, starting from `1,000 onwards), which you can mix with your bath water. But, remember to check with your doctor before attempting this treatment.

Increase your turmeric intake While there is no scientific evidence to back this up, turmeric is considered to be an effective home remedy to combat psoriasis. Turmeric powder — a spice that is commonly used in Indian preparations — is an easy way to include turmeric in your diet. You can also mix a teaspoon of turmeric with milk and drink it right before going to bed.

Get a massage Stress can cause psoriasis to rear its ugly head very quickly. While there are several ways to combat stress, picking a massage is like killing two birds with one stone — not only will it relax you and reduce stress, it will also relieve you of chronic pain, which is something that psoriasis can lead to. However, remember to pick a dry massage as massage oils can irritate your skin.

perspiring

beauty You may be damaging your skin and hair during your workout. To help keep yourself protected, Dev Goswami & Sara Shah suggest you follow these tips

>> Wear a headband to prevent sweat from trickling down on to your face

>>Spray-on sunscreens are lighter and so, are perfect for outdoor workouts

W

hile you’re busy counting your sets and repetitions, we’re guessing you don’t have the time to pay attention to your skin and hair. Sometimes, flyaway hair and itchy skin can even impede your workout. So, we’re bringing you a few tips to help you deal with some common skin and hair problems that you might face during or after a workout.

Move your hair out of the way That swishing ponytail might make you look better in your gym clothes, but it isn’t a very practical hairstyle to opt for during a workout. Chances are, the strands of hair will stick to your sweaty neck or fly into your face, hindering you from exercising effectively. Instead, pick a high, braided bun. It’s cute, trendy and won’t bother you during your workout. Pin your fringe back or wear a headband to keep your hair from getting sweaty and greasy. This will also prevent breakouts on your forehead.

Shower thoroughly Heavy sweating might indicate that you’re having a good workout, but revelling in your post-workout satisfaction in the same, sweaty gym clothes is highly unsanitary. Moist gym clothes are a breeding ground for bacteria and can cause skin infections, especially in areas such as your underarms, groin or the back of your knees — remember this the next time that you tell yourself it’s okay to shower later. Also, it is essential that you shower before and after you take a dip in the pool.

Sun protection While working out at the gym is great, there is nothing better than the experience of running outdoors. But, what usually happens is that you are so pumped up about a good run that you forget about applying any kind of sun protection. Most sunscreen creams might be too greasy for sweaty cardio sessions. So, pick spray-on sunscreens instead as they are lighter, and won’t make you feel uncomfortable when you’re running.

avoid Makeup Wearing makeup to the gym is an absolute no-no. Not only will you look like a live horror show with all your makeup sliding off your face, but the makeup mixing with your sweat will also clog your pores. If you really need to wear makeup during a workout (thought we don’t see why you would), pick silicon-based products, as they form a layer over your skin and won’t slide off your face as you perspire. Once you’re done exercising, wash your face thoroughly with a good face wash to flush out impurities from your pores.

Sanitize equipMent Dozens of people use the equipment at the gym every day. And, while most gyms do disinfect these machines, you can never be to sure about who or what the equipment has come into contact with. So, it’s a good idea to carry a small bottle of antibacterial spray with you and clean the equipment before using it. Remember to sanitise your hands after you finish using it.

« Dealing with skin problems associateD with working out

Working out may help you lose the excess kilos, but it can also leave you with a few skin problems. However, these minor setbacks shouldn’t be slowing you down. Take a look at how to deal with them effectively, says Shirley Mistry

A

with you and reapply it every 45 — but only minutes after thoroughly wiping the sweat off your skin. n Cure: Stay out of the sun for the rest of the day. Once you develop a sun burn, continued contact with the harsh sun will only make the inflammation worse. Apply aloe vera gel every few hours and a cortisone-based cream to treat it quickly.

fter slaving away relentlessly at the gym, the last thing you want is for a perpetually red face or acne to draw attention away from your enviable physique. So, find out more about the following problems, which are a by-product of working out. We’re also telling you how to treat and prevent them.

exceSSive redneSS

No, occasionally flushed cheeks don’t count. If you have sensitive skin, you’ll know exactly what we are talking about. Blotchy, angry, red skin is common if you have sensitive skin, because the heat, combined with sweat and dust, is all it takes to irritate it. n Prevention: The simplest way to prevent excessive redness is to use moisturisers that are specifically designed for sensitive skin, which claim to reduce redness. Look for ingredients such as thermal spring water, zinc and licorice extract in your moisturiser, as they help control redness. Also, use a water-based mist spray in order to keep the heat from getting to you. n Cure: The best way to deal with redness is to lower your body temperature as fast as possible, before the redness sets in completely. Take a shower, suck on ice chips and spray your face with a cold water mist.

itchineSS & Stinging

>> Always carry sunscreen with you when you are working out outdoors

Sunburn

You may slather on sunscreen before going for a run or a swim, but sunscreen isn’t completely sweat proof and will slide off your skin in a mere 30 minutes, leaving you with painful sunburn. n Prevention: Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you leave the house, because it takes around that long to become active. Also, pick thick formulas and avoid runny ones. Looking for a sweat proof lotion is a good idea as they last longer than regular sunscreen. Finally, always carry sunscreen

Itchiness, stinging and hives are actually allergic reactions that are triggered by intense workouts. Women are the most affected and these are either temporary or lifelong problems. When you work out, your body temperature rises and your mast cells (white blood cells associated with allergies) release histamine, causing allergic reactions such as itchiness, stinging and symptoms of hay fever. n Prevention: Unfortunately, the only way to deal with this is to pop an anti-histamine pill before your workout to prevent the symptoms from kicking in. You may have to observe your symptoms to determine whether your allergies take place seasonally, or all through the year. n Cure: If you aren’t too keen on popping a pill every day, monitor your triggers and take a pill the minute you feel the symptoms setting in.

What if you were to meet someone who claimed to be dead? While it might seem spooky, Sara Shah says you might be talking to someone suffering from the Cotard Syndrome. Read on to find out more

P

icture this: If you or someone you knew, were to wake up one day with a convincing, delusional belief that they were dead, wouldn’t it give you a fright? And while we have seen similar situations in films, such a condition does exist off screen as well. Cotard Syndrome is a rare mental disorder where a person believes that he/ she is dead, never existed or has lost all blood and internal organs (read zombies).

What to expect

Anyone who suffers from Cotard Syndrome will tell you that they don’t exist anymore or that they never existed in the first place. They believe that their bodies are rotting and that they have lost all their organs and blood. The diagnoses of Cotard Syndrome needs no other symptom except for the patients delusional belief that they are dead.

>> Although uncommon, leg attacks can be highly fatal

Break a leg No we aren’t wishing you luck. What Dev Goswami is actually talking about is a leg attack — an uncommon, but fatal complication. He talks to Dr. R. Sekhar from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and finds out why you need to be wary of this problem

B

efore we begin, answer the following questions: What is one of the most common medical conditions? What is the most prevalent unhealthy habit? If we were to tabulate your responses, we’re guessing that diabetes and smoking would rank high on the list, if not right at the top. Now, if you consider the fact that these two conditions play an important role in causing leg attacks — a complication that is not common, but can have very deadly consequences — you won’t be surprised when Dr. R. Sekhar, a vascular surgeon at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, tells you that he comes across 15 cases of leg attacks every month. So, you see why it is important to talk about this condition. However, if you’re wondering what leg attacks are to begin with, read on.

What aRe leg attacks? If you were to consider the biological process, leg attacks are similar to heart attacks. Dr. Sekhar tells us that one of the primary reasons that they occur, is because of blocked vessels. These blocked vessels arise because of a variety of lifestyle and medical factors, with smoking and diabetes being that two leading causes. In fact, Dr. Sekhar tells us that while he doesn’t have city-wide statistics, 40% of the approximately 200 cases of leg attacks he handles every year, are due to smoking or diabetes. Other factors that can put you at risk of leg attacks include obesity, being over 50-years-old, leading a sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure and/ or high cholesterol levels and a family history of heart attacks and/ or strokes.

Why do i need to WoRRy? It is commonly believed that heart attacks are one of the most dangerous complications that you can suffer from. While this is true, you’d be surprised to find that leg attacks are more fatal than heart attacks. Dr. Sekhar explains, “When a patient has blocked arteries — which is the main cause of heart attacks, it indicates that there is a 30% chance of the patient having a vascular disease in other parts of their body as well. But, a blocked artery in the leg indicates that there could be a 60-70% chance of vascular disease in other parts of their body.” Simply put, a leg attack is a strong indication that you may have blocked blood vessels in other parts of your body as well. A leg attack can also put you at risk of amputation or a stroke and in extreme cases, can be fatal.

keeping them aWay One of the first things you should do is to get yourself checked. Dr. Sekhar bemoans the lack of awareness about this condition, because it is the primary reason for late diagnoses, which can be fatal. He tells us, “Early detection and increased awareness

Risk factoRs & symptoms

Smoking. Diabetes. Pain in your calf muscles while walking. Leg pain, even when you’re at rest. Cold and/or numb toes. Scrapes, bruises and cuts/ wounds on your feet that take too long to heal.

can help prevent leg attacks. It can be easily treated in its initial stages with appropriate medication and simple lifestyle changes, if the patient approaches a qualified vascular surgeon.” He adds that leg attacks are diagnosed with a test called Colour Doppler, which is an advanced imaging technique that allows doctors to examine your blood vessels. As far as the treatment is concerned, it is performed by placing a balloon in your arteries and then inflating it to open up narrowed or blocked blood vessels. In some cases, a stent is added to ensure that the vessel stays open. Bear in mind that if you’re diabetic, it would be prudent to get yourself checked. This is because diabetes and vascular, or arterial disease — blockages or plaque build-up in blood vessels other than those in your heart — are a deadly combination. Dr. Sekhar explains, “The danger of amputations is extremely high in diabetics who suffer from arterial diseases, as a large number of these patients have associated neuropathy and so the ability to perceive pain is lost or numbed.” Something as minor as a shoe bite can become a dangerous problem, because firstly, you won’t feel the pain and second, the lack of blood flow to the area will mean that it won’t heal, and therefore, can result in an infection. If you’re wondering whether you need to get yourself checked or not, refer to our risk factor box to know about the top causes and factors that indicate a risk of leg attacks. If most, or all of them hold true for you, get yourself checked immediately.

Why this happens?

A sufferer of Cotard Syndrome goes through three distinct stages on being affected. In the first stage, the patient might go through psychotic depression and suffer from anxiety and negativity. The second stage involves the sufferer’s complete denial of being alive and the last stage includes chronic depression and delusions such as the smell of rotting flesh or the feeling of being dead. In some cases, patients also believe that they are immortal. People who suffer from Cotard Syndrome often cannot recognise their own faces. They lose interest in life and show absolutely no inclination to pursue their social life and anything that might give them pleasure. They give up on personal hygiene and refuse to eat or show any reaction to nature’s call. Suicidal tendencies are a given for sufferers of Cotard Syndrome, as the delusional belief of being dead makes them think that they are stuck in the mortal world as a ghost and need to move on. They lose their sense of reality and ergo, exhibit a distorted view of the world. Cases where a sufferer begins spending time in graveyards to be closer to death are not unheard of.

hoW aRe they tReated?

Treatments include electroconvulsive therapy, which is more commonly known as electroshock therapy, antidepressants and mood stabilisers. While there is no proven cause as to why this syndrome occurs, researchers have found a nexus between the disorder and injuries to the brain. Other reasons include a possible reaction to certain medicinal drugs.

>> Cotard Syndrome is most commonly treated by administering electroshock therapy

dear Barbara, I went to a party last weekend and ended up drinking more than 4-5 glasses of wine. As a result, I woke up with a terrible hangover on Monday. I was completely zoned out at work and my face looked dull and sallow. I have to attend another party this weekend and I don’t want to wake up with another hangover. Is there any cure to make me look, if not feel fresh? Please help! — rutuja sen, mahim dear rutuja, First off — drinking that many glasses of wine isn’t good for your health! Drink in smaller amounts and all your problems will be solved. To cure the hangover and look fresh, first use warm water and a detoxifying cleanser to remove any leftover makeup from the previous night. Make sure that you drink lots of water, because alcohol is dehydrating. Then, even out your skin tone and give your parched face a much-needed hit of hydration with the help of a tinted moisturiser. To add a little life to your dull skin, apply pink blush. You can also take an asprin as it will help to reduce the puffiness and redness on your face.

NO SHAMPOO MUMBAI | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2014

Shampoos, conditioners and other hair products are essentially a concoction of chemicals that strip your scalp of nourishment during the cleansing process. But, if you want healthy, happy hair, Shirley Mistry tells you about the benefits of going shampoo-free

T

here are several things that I am willing to change in my daily routine to make my life healthier, but giving up on shampoo isn’t one of them. However, if all this talk of parabens, pthalates, petroleum by-products and toxic chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate being present in hair products has gotten you worried, here are some chemical-free alternatives. You may find it hard to do away with shampoo altogether, but occasionally using these remedies will give your hair a break from the chemicals and phase in the process. Also, if you have curly hair, this is going to be easier, because curly hair hides the excess secretion of oil during the transition period much better than straight hair.

>> Going shampoofree can give your hair a break from all the chemicals that are present in shampoos

Lemon juice Lemon juice is usually used to cut through the richness or fat content in a dish. Applying the same logic, using lemon juice to cleanse your hair is a great idea, because it will break down the oil and grease that is present in it. However, this remedy is more suited to oily hair, because lemon juice can aggravate hair that is already dry in texture.

Baking soda & appLe cider vinegar

>> A hand cream will keep your hands soft, smooth and hydrated during winter dear Barbara, I take really good care of my skin. So much so that I usually get several compliments about it. However, my hands have started looking really dry and unattractive. I get manicures every month, but my hands still feel very dry. What should I do to keep them soft and supple? — shibani gupta, goregaon dear shibani, Hands are the most neglected part of our body and require a lot of pampering. To keep them soft, wash them in warm water. If that doesn’t do the trick, use a gentle soap or lotion. Try wearing gloves when you step outdoors to protect your hands from the scorching rays of the sun. To keep your hands wrinkle-free, use a moisturiser that contains shea butter, retinol and vitamin B. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your hands when you step outdoors.

This combination may seem like an odd one to apply to your hair, but it really works. Replace your shampoo with a paste made using these two simple ingredients. The baking soda will remove any odour, while the vinegar will cleanse and condition your hair.

coconut oiL Instead of resorting to a serum or detangling spray, simply take a few drops of coconut oil and work it into your hair. Not only will it nourish your

hair, it will also add a healthy shine to it, while helping to get rid of all the stubborn knots.

Brown sugar

only is it extremely gentle on your hair, it won’t cause breakage and will help distribute your hair’s natural oils (which are essential for healthy growth) equally, from root to tip.

No, we aren’t out of our minds. Just like your face and body, your scalp needs to be exfoliated too, especially if you are attempting to go shampoo-free. Simply mix brown sugar with olive oil and massage it into your scalp. This will help reduce itchiness, and will get rid of any dirt build-up, leaving you with squeaky clean roots.

rice fLour If you are planning to replace your trusty dry shampoo with a more natural alternative, use a pinch of rice flour instead. It will soak up all the oil from your roots in a jiffy and will add volume to your hair, making it a great styling product substitute.

Boar BristLe This tip is slightly difficult to incorporate, as boar bristle hair brushes are difficult to scour. But, if you have relatives visiting you from other countries or know of a speciality store that is willing to source it, do invest in one of these brushes. Not

LoveLy Lavender Since you aren’t washing your hair with fragrant shampoo, your hair won’t smell as delicious. But, this isn’t difficult to take care of. Add a few drops of lavender oil (or any other floral extract of your choice) to a bottle of water and spritz your hair with it for hair that smells as good as it looks.

Thirteen CRPF personnel, including two officers, were on Monday killed while an equal number were injured in an encounter with Maoists in the Naxal hotbed of Sukma in Chhattisgarh. According to preliminary reports reaching the force's headquarters here, a squad of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was undertaking operations in Kasanpara village of the district in the south Bastar region when they entered into an encounter with the Maoists at around 10.30 a.m. The engagement, a senior officer said, continued till 2 p.m. with casualties occurring on both sides. To decongest roads in the national capital, Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari yesterday said the Centre was going to construct a ring road at an estimated cost of Rs.4,700 crore. "The problem of traffic in Delhi is very serious. Our government has decided to spent Rs 4,700 crore and we will construct a cement concrete ring road. "The tender has been invited for the project. December 11 is the last date to submit the tenders. We will start giving work order after a foundation-laying ceremony by the Prime Minister," Gadkari said.

59.4 rural households do not have toilet facilities

Government has spent over US $3 billion on constructing toilets across the country but the sanitation campaigns are yet to achieve success with nearly 60 per cent rural households lacking toilet facilities. With the effort put into the sanitation programme, the coverage in rural areas has gone up from one per cent in 1981 to 32.70 per cent as per Census 2011, and to 40.60 per cent as per National Sample Survey Office report 2012. "However, six months down the lane, Modi government stands out for three simple characteristics- U-turn on promises, mere renaming and plagirising UPA's programmes and schemes and decisions that involves selling out public/national interests for the benefit of friendly corporate houses," he said. "The Modi government is nothing but U-turn sakrar, a government of imitation and industralists. Congress cannot be a silent complicit to the farce being enacted in the name of government", Maken said claiming that the booklet seeks to apprise people of the real face of Modi and BJP. The AICC Communication department chief said that in the last one week, the government made U-turns on three more issues including revealing the documents relating to Subhash Chandra Bose, civil nuclear liability Act and on the issue of land boundary agreement with Bangaladesh. "People, nation and Congress want to know whether the temptations of power had made you so blind that you opposed everything by the Congress-led government just to come to power?", he said.

By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

he Sangeet Baithak concept initiated by Shivaji Park Nagarik Sangh has really caught with its once a month feature as it draws a full house and the artiste get inspiration in such an atmosphere which is conducive to good music. This week it was young Varsha Sohoni from the same Shivaji Park area who began the programme with her vocal recital. Varsha originally belongs to Pune where she trained under Madhusudan Patwardhan and Chandrashekhar Deshpande in classical music as well as natya sangeet. She has a smiling face and a pleasing personality which wins the audience over. In addition to that, her grounding in the Jaipur Attrauli gharana idiom is quite solid. She has trained under the late Kamal Tambe as also from the late Madhusudan Kanitkar who also coached other famous singers like Manjiri Asnare and Manjusha Kulkarni. Varsha sang the raga 'Gauri' in the beginning. The phrase 'N S r N' oriented towards the lower octave is the catch phrase of the raga. Her middle tempo taans as well as fast taans were delivered with a sense of precision and accuracy. She also sang a tranquil 'Tilak Kamod'. The composition 'Sur Sangat Raagvidya' was set to madhya laya and to the seven beat taaal rupak. Varsha also sang an abhang which was popularised by the late Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar. Overall, it was a delightful performance. She was accompanied on the harmonium by Anant Joshi and on the tabla by Sugato Nag, a talented sitar player from Calcutta gave a competent performance in the second half of the programme. Sugato played alap, jod and gats in the raga 'Jaijaivanti'. He is a product of the confluence between the Maihar and Shahajanpur/Senia gharana. His alaps reflected patterns which were akin to the sarod baaj. It is hardly a surprise because he has learned from the veteran Buddhadev Dasgupta. The community of musicians and music lovers were happy to receive the news of the announcement of the Bhimsen Joshi Lifetime Achievement Award for the current year. The award which carries a cheque of Rs 5 lakh and a memento has been instituted by the Government of Maharashtra. The award goes to Dr Prabha Atre, the doyenne of the Kirana gharana.

s part of British Council's Re-Imagine Arts Initiative, London-based Avant Garde Dance Company presented Black Album at the NCPA Tata Theatre recently. The performance was noteworthy for its physicality, musicality and the power- packed quality, that kept the audience spell bound. Tony Adigun is the creative director, curator, choreographer, dancer, educator and mentor of the Avant Garde Dance Company. Surprisingly Tony has received no formal training in dance but is deeply influenced by music and movements which was quite evident in the performance. Tony has developed his own dance vocabulary which has its base in the hip hop culture nevertheless his sharp edge for composition, musicality and form has helped him develop his own signature style which is visually appealing and the dancers dance with joie-de-vivre that creates a lasting impression on the spectators. The dancers are trained in varied forms of dance, including the ballet and have amazing control over varied bodily movements and are in a position to change in split seconds, which reflects on the versatility of the dancers. Tony says, "I am deeply influenced by music and I feel that dance is an extension of music and an inseparable part that controls the dancers accordingly." The Black Album is based on a concept and the locations change accordingly, like the Club wherein the dancers dance with joy and fun, the bedroom or the imagination of the audience that takes you to a journey of music of Jazzanova to Mozart, Woodkid to Trentemoller, Linkin Park to Beethoven. Besides the vitality of the dancers, Tony cleverly uses the lights in varied angles, according to moods and emotions of the dancers, creating an amazing visual impact on the audience. Tony has taken his performances to unchartered territories, thereby winning admiration from highest echelons of the dance industry.

IN BRIEF Tanuja-Kajol praise ‘Viti Dandu’

he Srihari Sathe produced and directed film ‘Ek Hazarachi Note’ set in rural Maharashtra, won the Special Jury Prize as well as the Centenary award at the 45th IFFI Film Festival held in Goa. The US-based director with a degree in filmmaking from New York School of Filmmaking has made this film with rare sensitivity. The tale is about an impoverished old lady played excellently by Usha Naik who gets a Rs 1,000 note from the local politician played by Ganesh Yadav which lands the old lady in trouble when she attempts to spend the money, right from the merchants of her village to the police officials in the town. “Winning the two awards is indeed a rare honour for me and the credit goes to my entire team. I am spurred on by these awards and right now I am working on a thriller set in Houston and it’s a Hollywood production and the film should release soon,” says Srihari Sathe. He adds that his choice of Usha Naik was perfect casting for the film and that clinched the awards in his favour. Sudhir Nandgaonkar, an eminent film critic and festival curator opines, “This is a great day for Marathi cinema because it’s the first time that a Marathi film has been honoured with two Best Film Awards and I attribute these awards to a good story, screenplay and direction and showing the true state of Vidharbha region today.” Eminent film critic and journalist Srikant Bojewar who has written his first story and script for the film attributes these awards to wonderful and realistic depiction of the problems in Vidarbha as seen by him as a journalist and the wonderful presentation on screen by director Srihari Sathe along with a flawless performance by Usha Naik.

Ajay Devgn Productions ‘Viti Dandu’ has been praised for its good content and technical finesse by veteran actor Tanuja and her star daughter Kajol who said that even she was willing to act in a Marathi film if the script is good because she considers Marathi as a language close to her. Tanuja praised the performances of Dilip Prabhavalkar, and child actor Nishant Bhavsar and added that the cinematography of Shailesh Avasthi was superb and raised the calibre of the film by a few notches.

Onus on disproving conflict of interest on Srinivasan: SC

N

EW DELHI: The Supreme Court put the onus on BCCI President-in-exile N Srinivasan to prove that there was no conflict of interest involving him that came in the way of a probe into the IPL6 scam and took strong exception to his counsel "repeatedly" naming Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the proceedings. "You are repeatedly naming Jaitley who is not represented here. He is not a party here. Don't attribute it to a person who is not represented here," a bench comprising justices T S Thakur and F M I Kalifulla said. The remarks were made

while Srinivasan's counsel Kapil Sibal was stressing that a BCCI panel set up to probe the scam was constituted on the suggestion of Jaitley, who was of the view that the inquiry should be free from BCCI's interference. Sibal said the issue of Jaitley's view was reflected in the record and later referred to in the minutes of May 28, 2013 working committee meeting to substantiate his submission. The bench proceeded with the hearing saying "If you mention name, you have to mention the context because he is not represented." Since the major part of the hearing was on the issue of conflict of interest involving Srinivasan, the bench said "We have a different opinion on the conflict of interest issue. You have to lift the veil." Sibal was arguing that there was no finding either by the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee or the Bombay High Court against him on the conflict of interest issue. The senior advocate said "even if you lift the veil you will not find anything on conflict of interest and they (rivals) only want him to remove (from BCCI)." Responding to his contentions, the bench said it was upto him to "demonstrate" that there was no conflict of interest as the question has arisen on admitted facts. Sibal said at no point of time was Srinivasan given an opportunity either before the Mudgal Committee or the High Court to address the issue of conflict of interes, he said.

Tributes were paid to Phillip Hughes at club cricket matches all around Australia during the weekend.

A

DELAIDE: Ending days of speculation, the first Test between India and Australia was today rescheduled for December 9 here at the adopted home ground of late batsman Phillip Hughes, whose tragic death left the host country devastated. "The series for the BorderGavaskar Trophy will now commence in Adelaide on the revised date of Tuesday 9 December," Cricket Australia said in a statement. The second Test in Brisbane will start on December 17, followed by Melbourne on December 26 and the final match in Sydney, starting January 6. A two-day tour game featuring a CA XI was cancelled last week, but India might get an opportunity to play a practice match later this week. These changes follow dis-

cussions between CA, the Australian Cricketers' Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). CA Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland thanked the BCCI for its continued support and understanding. "The BCCI has shown great empathy and understanding which we truly appreciate. They have put the cricket community's concerns for the Hughes family well ahead of their own preparation," he said. The revised schedule allows for a three-day break leading into the Brisbane Test and a four-day break ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne for players to adequately prepare. "The Sydney Test has also been shifted as a result with its start date moving to January 6 to allow for six day break for players towards the

end of a busy series," the statement said. It also enables a five-day break leading into the ODI Series between Australia, England and India. Sutherland said the changed program was made due to welfare concerns for Australia's players grieving the loss of Hughes who passed away last week. Hughes' funeral will take place in his home town of Macksville on Wednesday. The entire Australian team, Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, visiting side's coach Duncan Fletcher and Team Director Ravi Shastri will attend the funeral of the young batsman. "Nobody should underestimate just what these players are going through right now. These are difficult days and we need to support them in dealing with their grief," Sutherland said.

AUSTRALIA TO FACE INDIA IN FIRST 2015 WORLD CUP WARM-UP Australia will take on reigning champions India in the first warm-up match, scheduled prior to the start of the 2015 World Cup in FebruaryMarch. A total of 14 non-ODI warm-up matches will be played across Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Christchurch from February 8 to 13, according to an ICC media release today. The Men in Blue will have another practice game on February 10 against Afghanistan. India, who are clubbed with South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland and United Arab Emirates in Pool B, will play both the practice games against teams from Pool A.

SYDNEY: A batsman in a club match in Victoria has paid a touching tribute to Phillip Hughes by deciding to sacrifice breaking a longstanding record. According to a report in The Courier Mail, Shaun McArthur, captain of Ballarat club side Haddon, was batting on 220 and was blazing his way to the club's all-time batting record in a match against local rivals VRI Delacombe, but decide to retire after glancing at the scoreboard. His teammates were stunned by his decision but realised their skipper's move when they looked at the scoreboard. Haddon was on 408, which was Hughes' Test number for Australia, and there had been 63 overs bowled. Hughes was batting on 63 when he was fatally struck by a Sean Abbott bouncer. After that '63 not out' has become a preferred way to pay tribute to Hughes as junior club cricketers across Australia were encouraged to retire on 63. "Everyone walked up and shook his hand," Haddon club spokesman Vincent McDonald told The Courier. "It was a chance innings. You can't plan to have scores like this 220 runs for a player and 408 (total) in the standard of cricket we play. Shaun must've just noticed the score and thought, 'That'll do'."

Why should I ask Dhoni to resign: Srinivasan C

HENNAI: Refusing to talk about Mahendra Singh Dhoni's role in his company India Cements, BCCI's President-in-exile N Srinivasan today made it clear that the Indian captain would not be asked to resign despite questions about conflict of interest being raised against him. Srinivasan, who is also the ICC Chairman, declined comments on the IPL spotfixing scandal, which is being heard in the Supreme Court right now after Justice Mudgal Committee submitted its investigative report on the matter. "The matter is in the

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and N. Srinivasan

court. I cannot speak on this," Srinivasan told reporters on the sidelines of an ICC function here. The Tamil Nadu strongman was even more curt when it came to answering questions on Dhoni, who is an employee of India Cements besides being the captain of the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings -- owned by the company. Supreme Court has made scathing comments on the issue of conflict of interest in the case of both Dhoni and Srinivasan. "Why should I ask him to

resign?" Srinivasan shot back when asked whether Dhoni would be asked to step down. Asked what was Dhoni's role in India Cements, Srinivasan was once again curtly said, "Why should I tell you." Srinivasan is under immense pressure to give up his position in the BCCI in the wake of the Mudgal Committee's observations on his role in the scandal. The committee, while giving a clean chit to Srinivasan personally, has observed that the BCCI chief turned a blind eye to the wrongdoings in the league.

UMBAI: Riding on belligerent half centuries from Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel, defending champions West Zone staged a magnificent fight back to edge past South Zone by 2 wickets and enter the Deodhar Trophy tournament final. Chasing an imposing 315 for victory in the second semi-final, West were struggling at 174 for six when Yadav (80 in 56 balls with 4 sixes, 7 fours) and No.8 batsman Patel (64 not out in 38 balls) got involved in a match-winning stand of 70 runs off 76 balls. The seventh-wicket duo added a whopping 67 runs in the batting power play that turned the side's fortunes. Though Yadav, dropped twice on 9 and 11, departed at the score reading 244, left handed Patel – who struck 4 sixes and 5 fours in his 38-ball essay - found an able partner in Shardul Thakur (31 not out in 23 balls) to take West to 319 for eight in 47.1 overs. Fittingly, the Gujarat youngster, who has made a good impression in the series against Sri Lanka recently, hit the winning hit – a straight six – to complete a memorable win at the Wankhede Stadium. Top-order batsmen Sheldon Jackson (51) and Ambati Rayudu (54) had put on 89 runs in 91 balls for the second wicket but following their dismissals in quick succession, the hosts fell into trouble before Yadav and Patel bailed them out. West, bidding for their fourth straight title, will meet East Zone in the final here on December 3 in a day-night clash. Earlier, South's toporder feasted on some wayward bowling after being put

Another fruitful stand of 76 runs in 74 balls followed between Agarwal and Aparajith, scorer of a century in the quarter final win over Central, as the 150 came up in the 26th over. Off-spinner Deepak Hooda had Agarwal, who was poised for his century, stumped with a wide ball down the leg side after the batsman had scored at almost a run-a-ball and struck ten fours. A short ball from Kulkarni in his second spell sent back Aparajith, who hit two fours and as many sixes (both off rival skipper Yusuf Pathan) and was caught at deep midwicket. These two wickets in a short span brought West back in the game. However, South were aided by another 50-plus stand between Pandey, another contender from Karnataka who played some excellent improvised shots, and his state mate Karun Nair and then the side finished with a tall score by adding 53 runs in the last five overs. AO PAULO: Veteran Australian motor racing driver Mark Webber was injured in a high-speed crash at the Six Hours of Sao Paulo event. Webber, racing for Porsche in the World Endurance Championship after quitting Formula One last season, was stretchered off the Interlagos circuit yesterday after his car collided with the Ferrari of Matteo Cressoni. Footage showed both cars crashing into a concrete

barrier at speeds estimated at around 300km/h with Webber's vehicle catching fire before it came to a stop with the car wrecked. "Cressoni was checked by the medical staff at the side of the track and cleared, while Mark Webber, who was awake and alert, was taken to the circuit medical centre for further examination," said a statement from the organisers. Webber, 38, gave a thumbsup to the crowd as he was

taken to the medical centre although there was no immediate word of his condition. Porsche team boss Fritz Enzinger later said Webber was recovering in a Sao Paulo hospital. "Mark is OK, but he has had to go to hospital for further checks," Enzinger told www.Autosport.Com. when a player really peaks is between 25 and 35. At that age, he is completely seasoned and mature enough as an individual and as a player," Advani told PTI in an interview. "I won it (world title) at the age of 18, a few years before me there was a guy who won it at the age of 17. A few years later in 2006 there was Michale White form Whales who won it at the age of 15. And now Bingtao winning it at the age of 14. Definitely the sport is becoming younger," the 29-year-old added. Twelve-time world champion Advani, who has added four world titles to his illustrious shelf this year, might

have lost in the quarter-finals to Bingtao but is more than satisfied with this "great" season. "I have enjoyed my season and enjoyed some really good results. I don't know if I will ever be able to repeat a year like this. It's just been a phenomenal year for me. I have won so much and even if I lost the last one, you can't win them all," he said. "It has obviously been very demanding of me to shift from billiards to snooker and play all major tournaments one after the other. Starting from June and the 6-Reds in Egypt and the World Team Championships in Scotland, world billiards time point and then immediately after that snooker. So it has been quite hectic," he added. Calling UK and China as the two powerhouses of snooker, Advani insists that India needs a more structured format to produce more world beaters. "I think we need a structured tour in India. We need to have programs, coaching sessions and brainstorming sessions. We need to be exposed to international snooker much more than we are right now.
