good news", BJP's state unit chief Jugal Kishore Sharma yesterday said after a party delegation met Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra. "We have asked him (governor) for some more time, so that the result of the ongoing dialogue (with other parties) comes out. There are many issues that need to be discussed that is why it is taking time," he said and asserted that BJP would work for a stable government in J&K. Queried on the demand for a chief minister from Jammu region, party's state incharge Avinash Rai Khanna said,

"Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh constitute one state and the chief minister would be from the state of Jammu and Kashmir." The BJP leadership in Jammu and Kashmir had been till now batting strongly for a Chief Minister from Jammu, especially from the party, in case of a post-poll alliance. While hinting towards accommodating the agendas of coalition partners, Khanna said that the party knows very well how to run a "successful coalition government." "When we sit together and

discuss on the issue of government formation, we can come out with a Common Minimum Programme and form a joint agenda to run the government. "BJP knows very well how to run a coalition government and the people trust us on that," Khanna said. Sharma said the process of discussion with other parties was on. n the double murder cases that cropped up before the cops a couple of days ago, the name of one Siraj Khan had come up as an accused. This Siraj was involved in the September 2011 Shakti Mills unnatural sex cum murder case and the city police suspect that he is the same guy who was involved in the horrific Shakti Mills photojournalist Siraj Khan, one of the accused in gang-rape case of August 2013. Shakti Mills gangrape case.

A day after VP road police handed over the three accused to the Marine Drive police station for interrogation, the police is sure that Siraj was involved in the gang-rape case, but they have yet to show Siraj Khan's picture to the three arrested accused to cross check his identity. According to VP road police station sources, the modus operandi of unnatural sex is similar to other rape cases which took place in 2013 including that of a call centre employee. On Wednesday, the city police claimed to have cracked the two murder cases with the

arrest of three accused from south Mumbai. Acting on a tip off, accused Rajkumar Ranappan (23), Sunil Kumar (30) and Vishal Padghan (30) were picked up from Gulalwadi area in Girgaum and their interrogation revealed their roles in the killing of two men reported in September 2011 and July this year. Marine Drive police has now placed the trio under arrest in connection with the murder case reported in its jurisdiction in July this year. The electronic toll (e-toll) collection system introduced in the country will help save Rs 88,000 crore and cut waiting time at toll plazas significantly, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said in the city, yesterday. Citing a Transport Corporation of India-IIM Kolkata study that said Rs 60,000 crore was lost on account of various delays at check posts, he said electronic toll collection could save Rs 88,000 crore, reports PTI. "The report said that every year, fuel worth Rs 60,000 crore is wasted due to the time spent by vehicles at toll plazas. The amount goes up to Rs 88,000 crore if the value of the time lost is added," he said. "Of the 350 toll points on the Mumbai-Delhi route, 140 have been converted into e-toll points. By completion of the e-toll work in the country, this amount of Rs 88,000 crore would be saved," he told reporters. "We will make available the e-platform to Maharashtra Government so that the same e-toll points can be started on state highways," Gadkari said. On the issue of making roads toll-free, Gadkari said, "we are trying to find a way out." "On the issue of toll, we are making a detailed study for the last two months. We are trying to bring in a new toll policy in a month, after taking approval of the PM and cabinet," Gadkari said.

now do it all in next two years. Talking about the demand for construction of ring road for Mumbai, he said that the government plans to bring the pushback technology used in Belgium and Rotterdam for construction of tunnels for the construction of the proposed ring road. Gadkari defended Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' demand for creating a separate committee under Prime Minister Narendra Modi arguing that there are several complex interlinking issues related

to issues like transport, water transport, salt pan lands which need the intervention of the Prime Minister. Replying to queries on abolishing toll, he said that the Centre is on the verge of formulating the policy which shall be out in a month's time. Gadkari disclosed that lands belonging to the big State Transport bus (ST) terminals should be developed as Bus Ports where long distance freight carrier drivers can have night halt which aims to reduce traffic jams and road accidents.

Wherever we felt that the prescribed standards for hygiene were not being met, we collected food samples. There were 14 such places. And at some places we did PTI

only inspection. From 14 hotels we collected 32 samples. The samples have been sent to the laboratory for analysis. Once we get the results, appropriate actions will be taken. Of the remaining eight that were subjected only to inspections, most of them will be sent notices because hygiene, storage conditions, not having proper records about the bills and also about the staff they have employed, were issues with them. So these cases will be sent an improvement notice,” said Suresh Annapure, Joint Commissioner, Food, Greater Mumbai, FDA. While the FDA seems to have done its bit to give Mumbaikars better eating places, the issue of staff crunch seems to affect the reach of its work. When asked about 22 inspections being too less a number for a city like Mumbai where New Year celebrations are a grand affair with food being an essential part of those celebrations, a food safety officer, on condition of anonymity said, “There is a severe shortage of staff. With only 19 posts out of the 65 sanctioned posts being filled, how can we cover the whole of Mumbai? Inspection at each place takes around four to five hours. With only 19 food safety officers at work, it is not possible to do more than what has been done.” According to FDA commissioner Purushottam Bhapkar, staff crunch was not an issue here. It was the time period during which the checks had to be done, which was

the restraint. “The places had to be inspected and food samples had to be collected during the time when the parties begin – somewhere between 7 pm and 12 midnight. So given the staff and the time we had to do the job, we have tried to do our best,” said Bhapkar.

‘Pad’ding it up

After public smooching protests across India in November 2014, the campaigners are back with a new cause – fighting discrimination against menstruating women in Kerala.Called 'Red Alert: You’ve Got a Napkin!', the campaign was launched after news of a forced strip search of women in a Kochi factory was reported by the media.Inspired by the 2009 Pink

Chaddi campaign against moral policing in Mangalore, the Red Alert campaign involves mailing sanitary napkins (used or unused) to the manager of the company in the Kochi, where more than 40 women employees were strip searched by two female supervisors in a bid to find out who left a used sanitary pad in the bathroom. The incident took place

on December 10, and the manager of the factory had refused to support the women or take action against the supervisors. A police complaint was filed against the supervisors later after the Kerala state women’s commission intervened. The Red Alert Facebook page has posted the address of the factory to which protesters can send sanitary napkins. “Protest against this inhuman act! Send a napkin (used or unused) to the MD of the company and mark your protest against this inhuman act,”

the Facebook page says.At least two other instances of discrimination against women of menstruating age have taken place in Kerala in December, sparking off intense social media discussions on the subject.Through the Red Alert campaign, the protesters want to raise awareness about the prejudices and politics around menstruation and women.

Jatinga: where migratory birds gather for mass suicide

Jatinga is a lush, scenic and usually tranquil Indian village nestled comfortably within the Borail Hills range. Known as the headquarters of the Dima Hasao district, it is also a famous resting place for many species of migratory birds: including kingfishers, Indian pitta, green-breasted pitta, green pigeons, black drongos, rackettailed drongos, whistling ducks, spotted doves, emerald doves,

and grey heron. For the last few decades, however, a bizarre and ghastly occurrence has gripped the quiet village. Most research indicates that birds are most active during the day. But almost every night at sunset between September and November, on a 1.5 km strip of land, hundreds of birds descend and like a massive dark cloud, crash into buildings and trees at

full speed. The mystery surrounding this phenomenon is even deeper than it seems. The most puzzling thing to about this phenomenon is that so many species of diurnal resident birds should be on the move when, by definition, they should be fast asleep. Some argue that it isn’t 'avian hara-kiri' as the locals refer to it, but rather a natural occurrence resulting from the birds’ attraction to light and their hapless flight towards anything with a light source. Some ornithologists believe there is a connection between the phenomenon and the electromagnetic forces of the area, namely the geographical fault lines that surround the area. The Jatinga bird occurrence dates back to at least 1905, when the area’s original inhabitants witnessed the startling phenomenon, and although frightened, interpreted it as a gift from the gods. Jatinga has become a famous spot due to the bird suicides. Sadly, though, no one mourns the loss of these creatures. Villagers trap the dead birds with bamboo sticks and consume them with gusto.

Tahilramani recently dismissed an appeal filed by the convict, Anant alias Rakesh Ratan Let, against a sessions court order convicting him for the murder, reports PTI. He is currently serving his sentence in Nashik Central prison. The judges held, "We are of the opinion that there is sufficient evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the appellant committed murder of Zarina by assaulting her with a knife and in the course of the incident, injuries were also inflicted on Reshma, also engaged in prostitution, who tried to save the victim." For causing injuries to Reshma, the convict, who hails from Andheri, was sentenced to one year imprisonment. The sentences were to run concurrently. Even this sentence has been unheld by the High Court. "Finding of blood of the group of the deceased (Zarina) on the clothes of the appellant (shirt, pant and

underwear) is a strong incriminating factor against the appellant," the HC judges noted in their findings. Besides, the accused was found to have sustained a deep cut injury on his left thumb. "This is sufficient to prove that he had been involved in the attack on Zarina and Reshma," said the Judges. Reshma and her neighbour had identified Anant as the person who had stabbed Zarina. Reshma had seen

him attacking Zarina after the latter shouted for help while the other witness who was staying in neighbourhood had heard Zarina's cries for help, the bench noted. The assailant was overpowered by people after Reshma grappled with him at a residence in Grant Road where they were engaged in prostitution. The incident occurred in 2009 and a sessions court convicted the accused after a trial in June 2010.

wo bike-borne bag snatchers allegedly attacked three women within an hour on the Western Express Highway in Vakola. One of the women happened to be the wife of BJP Mumbai president Ashish Shelar. According to sources at the Vakola police station, the three cases of bag lifting were carried out by two men on a bike, who first targeted a Chandivali-based woman when she was inside and autoricksaw. Shreerupasen Ghosh was attacked at around 8.45 pm. The bikers took off with a booty worth Rs 57,000, including her mobile phone worth Rs 50,000. Fifteen minutes later, the same bikers targetted another woman, Lalita Sharad Bande,

heading towards Bandra. The bikers snatched her bag while she was entering the autorickshaw and sped away. Shelar raised an alarm but she could not manage to note down bikers number because they sped away at a high speed. The bikers were wearing helmets due to which none of the victims could see their faces. They were however able to reveal that the bikers looked under 35 years. After the incident Shelar went to the Vakola Police station and filed an complaint against the accused. hey are the protector of citizens, albeit they fear for their safety now...all because of the rickety and dilapidated police station in which they work. The Deonar police station is in an inhabitable condition as the single-storeyed building has developed cracks on the walls and bits of the ceiling plaster keep falling, weakening the structure and threatening the lives of the police officers working there. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put up a notice at the police station declaring it unsafe, but the station authorities say that no order has been issued to shift or relocate the police station yet. Even the repair order has not been given. “We somehow managed to repair some of the dangerous spots. But much more is needed. The BMC says that the structure is not repairable. When we approached the MMRDA, they said to show them the Collector’s land, and then they would build the police station,” says MG Inamdar, the senior police inspector. Inamdar had to recently shift to another inspector's cabin as his own had become too dangerous to venture into. Likewise, the detection room, tadipar cell, station house where the public interacts with the police and women police officers' rooms are all in shambles.

The lock-up has been shifted to newly built Shivaji Nagar police station. Recently a request letter was sent to local MP Dr Kirit Somaiya to look into this. BJP’s minority morcha vice president Mohammad Hussain Khan has dispatched this letter to Somaiya requesting his attention at the earliest. This rickety station, during the monsoons, is flooded with water. The rain seeps in from the damaged ceilings. Bad odour emanating from the slaughter house is another woe of the officers, as many fall ill due to this precarious condition. Sadly a few months ago, former senior PI Manohar Vichare who was undergoing treatment for lung disease died due to heart attack. “Returning to the same premises must have added to his ailment that had caused his death due to heart attack,” says a local resident who pities the plight of the police officers. When ADC contacted Kiran Digaonkar, the ward officer of M(east), he said, “Along with other structures around Deonar slaughter house, we have declared Deonar police station as a dangerous structure which falls in the C1 category. We have put up a notice for its demolition. When the police station authorities approached us for land we told them to approach the MMRDA, as the BMC does not have the authority to allot land.”

nder the just launched 'Pahal' scheme from January 1, the state government will deposit cash subsidy to LPG consumers directly into their Aadhar-linked bank accounts. Disclosing this to newspersons here yesterday, Controller of Rationing and Director of Civil Supplies Shewta Singhal stated that under the scheme, consumers will have to pay the full amount for cylinders at the time of buying and the cash equivalent to the difference between the current subsidised rate and the market price will be transferred directly into their bank accounts. very difficult to keep a track of fake LPG users. However, now under the scheme a person can avail subsidy only once and cannot have multiple fake gas connections with various agencies. This will save a lot of money that is meant for subsidy,

added Singhal. She further stated that consumers who wish to join the scheme will have to either link their Aadhar number into their bank account and their LPG consumer number or if they do not possess Aadhar number, they will have to link their

bank account directly with their 17-digit LPG ID. Under the scheme, Singhal disclosed that a consumer will be required to fill up a form that can be availed at their respective gas agencies and at rationing offices. One copy of the form needs to be given to the gas agency and the other to the bank. The government has kept open a three-month window period for the people to avail of this facility. At present, Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban district have a total of 58.5 lakh LPG consumers while there are 17.5 lakh LPG consumers in neighbouring Thane district. Out of these about 40 per cent have already submitted the forms, she added.

Celebrating by donating guardian minister, Thane was present at the occasion and said, "This blood donation I sbeing held for the last 20 years in Thane, started by the late Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe. Hence, we all Shiva Sainiks are trying to

continue this social cause." Raktanand also announced an award for doners who have donated blood more than 25 times here. Three names were announced in this category: Duttaprasad Mantri, 78

he social justice ministry of the Maharashtra government is planning to revamp and rename two welfare schemes for destitute, including one in the name of Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi, an official source told PTI, yesterday. Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojna of Maharashtra government would soon be repackaged and renamed, he said. The scheme had been in-

troduced by former Chief Minister A R Antulay, who recently passed away. It was meant to provide financial assistance to destitute persons, disabled, orphan children, persons suffering from major illnesses, divorced women, abandoned women, women freed from prostitution, etc. A beneficiary gets Rs 600 per month under the scheme. The ministry is also plan-

ning to revamp and rename 'Shravan Bal Seva Rajya Nivrutti Vetan Yojna', aimed to provide monthly pension to destitute senior citizens, he said, adding the age limit would be lowered to 60 years from 65 and a new name would be given. The source also said that about 30 per cent posts in the social justice department were vacant, and in some districts there were no social welfare officers.

The department also lacked staff at the gram-panchayat level, which made effective implementation of schemes difficult, he added. It had been proposed that the Centre's skill-development programme, announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, should be implemented in residential schools under the social justice department with Central funds, the source said.

aharashtra government yesterday launched an online facility for making application under the Right to Information Act. The website (www.Rtionline.Maharashtra.Gov.In) received 40 applications on the first day, officials said. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had recently said such a facility would be started from January 1. Rajesh Aggarwal, princi-

pal secretary, IT, said the government will ensure that nodal officers of various departments dispose of these online applications in a time-bound manner. The website, which has both English and Marathi versions, also allows filing of first appeal if the information is denied, etc. It also informs about status of the application. Fee for the RTI application can be paid through in-

ternet banking or debit/credit cards. "We have ensured that no department is left (from being connected to the portal). Once an application is filed, the applicant will be given a registration number through SMS and email," he said. RTI activist and former information commissioner Shailesh Gandhi said he used the facility and found it satisfactory.

"I filed my first online application through the site today. The application can be filed in about five minutes, sitting at home, by anyone who has internet access. This is a very good initiative. It will also save paper, and could lead to (further facility of ) replies being sent by email. I am sure cyber-cafes will soon offer this service to customers by charging a small fee," Gandhi said.

he next time you get a test done from a private laboratory in Mira-Bhayandar, be sure to check the credentials of the technician, else you could land in serious trouble. Reason- Most of the pathology laboratories in the twincity are functioning in an illegal manner. Right to Information (RTI) replies obtained from the health department of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) by Navi Mumbai-based Dr Prasad Kulkarni has revealed that illegal pathology laboratories outnumber the legal ones in Mira-Bhayandar.

Although more than 100 pathology labs are operating in the region, only 48 have been registered with the MBMC. Out of the 48, 23 are being run by practitioners who lack requisite qualification. While the national and state medical councils allow only registered medical practitioners holding a PG degree in pathology to practice and operate 'path labs', judicial orders have also clearly endorsed this stand stating that only qualified holders of MD (pathologist) or diploma in clinic pathology (DCP) can be granted authorisation to set up a lab with updated instruments and qualified staff. While most of the illegal

labs are run by science graduates who later acquire a diploma in medical lab technique (DMLT), some dubious operators have reportedly obtained registration by invoking the name of an MD in pathology, but are conducting tests through unqualified persons. Reports signed by them do not hold weight in the court of law or for medical insurance claims. However thanks to the negligent attitude of authorities, several illegal pathological labs are running in every nook and cranny of the twin-city, posing a serious threat to patients due to wrong diagnosis from incorrect test reports.

The second class travel involves lot of pushing, and sometimes physical exchanges by angry passengers. Evidently the railways do not have any intention or plan to make suburban travel pleasant. The big question is where does all the money collected go? Evidently it all goes to Central kitty. If only money collected through suburban travel is spent on suburban train service itself, a lot of improvement can be made. Instead of doing this, the railways have decided to increase the fare rate. As it is, the rate is very high and it is painful that a further fare hike is being considered. Any hike will be justified only if the travel becomes comfortable. The railways claim that the fare at present is subsidised and it would not be possible to increase the subsidy. The B.K. Mittal Committee has come to the conclusion that fare hike is unavoidable. Even after the fare is raised, Mumbai’s suburban travel is not likely to improve.

International arena The new government, which took office in the middle of this year amid much hype, found its hands full with sundry tasks. While the Prime Minister took upon himself to improve India’s reputation in the international arena, his able colleagues were given specific guidelines to operate of which he would be the ultimate arbiter. A perceptible jolt administered to the various departments of the government, which have been asked to concentrate more on achieving optimum results instead of merely arguing in a circle, and to jettison the accumulated deadwood of the past several years. Given the pace and direction to which events are moving, it would be apt to infer, till date, that the aim is to achieve an overall amelioration of the country notwithstanding the meandering, riddle strewn path the government has to wade through. But, it has sufficient instruments in its governing armoury to make a successful work of it. Additionally, the people’s support remains largely intact. The country’s political space is being increasingly occupied by the BJP. The successive state elections display a steadily rising tally of BJP ruled state governments, replacing previous state dispensations, despite the acrimony, allegations -- real and imaginary -

BY AND LARGE Ranajoy Sen coalition governments, when it emerged the dominant party in elections. The country, it seems, was yearning for an alternative party, which would reflect a credible national identity. The BJP had been admirably gaining political ground from 1990s. It formed its first sustainable, yet coalition government in 1999. Nevertheless, 2014 delivered it a truly national presence, when it first secured a single party majority in the parliamentary elections, under the magnificent leadership of Mr. Modi, the skilled organizational methods of Mr. Amit Shah, and the hardwork of myriad party members. Today, the BJP can claim with more credibility, that the country would now have the possibility of deciding between two pan-Indian parties, despite the presence of certain influential regional parties. In the country’s neighbourhood and beyond, India had been often associated with

Certainties of the changing world Y

OU can be at ease with the uncertainty of the world when you realize the certainty of the consciousness. Often people do just the opposite. They are certain about the world but uncertain about the God. They rely on something that is not reliable and get upset. Uncertainty causes craving for stability. The most stable thing in the world is the Self. The world is of change and the self is of non-change. You have to relay on the nonchange and accept the change. If you are certain that everything is uncertain, then you are librated. When you are uncertain in ignorance, then you became worried and tense. Uncertainty with awareness brings higher state of consciousness with a smile. Often people think that certainty is freedom. If you feel that freedom when you are not certain, then that is the real freedom. Often your certainty or uncertainty is based on the relative world. Being certain about the uncertainty of the relative makes you certain about the existence of the absolute and also brings a certain faith in the absolute. Only in knowledge can one be enthusiastic amidst uncertainty. Often people who are uncertain do not act; they simply sit and wait. Acting in uncertainty makes life a game, a challenge. Being in uncertainty is letting go.

that of a mealy mouthed, yet dominating political entity -- particularly for the last decade -- which aroused wariness among its neighbours for its supposedly ulterior designs of arbitrariness. India has also been accused of not willing to respect the sensitivities of its surrounding countries enough to affect a more fruitful relationship with them. Mr. Modi’s personal visits to the neighbouring countries for working out a programme of tangible mutual benefits, and using the SAARC platform to urge for a more comprehensive and meaningful cooperation, where he was specific in his announcements of how India is willing to contribute and how it expects others to contribute, has perceptibly transformed India’s stature among most countries of South Asia, for the better.

Certainty about the relative world creates dullness. Uncertainty of the self creates fear. Uncertainty about matter brings certainty about consciousness. When you feel time is too short, you are either restless or in a state of expanded awareness. When you feel time is too long you are either miserable or keenminded. When you are happy and love what

You are unable to understand the play of events. In deep meditation, you are time and every thing is happening in you. Events are happening in you, just like the clouds come and go in the sky. When you are time, you are wise at peace. When the mind is happy, it expands and time seems too short. When the mind is unhappy, it contracts and time seems too long. When the mind is in equanimity, it transcends time. To escape from the two extremes, many resorts to alcohol or sleep but when mind is dull or unconscious, it is unable to experience itself. Samadhi, no-mindedness or timelessness, is peace, the real peace. That is the great-

The country’s economy is demanding increased investments to help the country’s growth rate to improve and to create more avenues for employment and earnings. But, the Governor of RBI, Dr. Raghuram Rajan, is withholding the country’s financial system from embarking on a knee-jerk reaction which might hinder the possibility of a sustained growth in the long run. Despite his differences with the country’s Finance Minister, Mr. Jaitley, both seem to agree more than less now. It is expected that Dr. Rajan would work with the government to put in place a law, analogous to the US bankruptcy law, where the government could accept a business failure, but provide an orderly way for business to emerge more efficient and accountable. The economic challenge for the coming year would be to manage both fiscal and monetary objectives effectively, for the country’s economy to register a net gain. Security challenges would be an imperative. Besides the unremitting antagonism of the China-Pakistan axis towards India, the perennial outbreaks of ethnic conflict and terror attacks in the country has become an internal bane for the country. Maintaining social stability and security is a chief determinant to perpetuate social harmony, development and investor confidence. As we begin the New Year, 2015, the Government of India has requisite entries, deletions and adjustments to make in nation’s balance sheet, to ensure a net satisfactory outcome. est healer. Just as the mind experiences time, this moment has a mind of its own, a big mind, which has an enormous power. Thought is nothing but a ripple in this moment, and thus a few moments of Samadhi infuses the mind with energy. Life is a combination of form and formless. Feelings have no form but their expression have form, The Self has no form but its abode has form. Similarly, wisdom and grace have no form but are expressed through form. Discarding the formless, you become inert, materialistic and paranoid. Discarding the form, you become a dreamer, or emotionally unbalanced. When some thing is unbelievably beautiful or joyful, you wonder if it is dream. Often what you perceive as reality is not joyful, so when misery is there, you wonder if it is a dream. You are sure it is the real. This is, knowing the real as unreal and unreal as real. In fact all miseries are unreal. A wise man knows that happiness is real, as it is your very nature. Unhappiness is unreal because it is inflicted by memory when you see everything as a dream, then you abides in our true nature. As you keep wondering, whether all this is a dream, you wake up to the real. Events come and go, they perish like flowers. But every event and every person contains some honey. Soon-to-be ‘ordinance government’ BY promulgating ordinances within days of the winter session of Parliament coming to a close, the Narendra Modi government has shown that it is not averse to repeating what his party would have considered a constitutional impropriety, had it been done by a Congress government. The power to issue ordinances is normally to be exercised to bring in urgent legislative measures when Parliament is in recess. It is a situation rich in irony as the BJP had often questioned the United Progressive Alliance government’s promulgation of ordinances in close proximity to a parliamentary session. 'ordinance power'. BJP has eight pieces of temporary legislation — known as ordinances — since coming to power. The recent one is to amend The Land Acquisition Act. Politicians also amend the laws interpreted by courts according to their wishes. They violate the laws in Parliament superceding the court’s decisions, even with retrospective effect like many — Bhagwan Thadani, via email cases in Taxation laws’ history. Despite batting heroics it was left to Ashwin and Dhoni to save the match. Pujara did not look comfortable at all. Kohli batted well but was out for a poor shot. We need to re-look at our team selection and the batting order. Dhavan should be dropped and Raina brought in. Rahul and Vijay should open followed by Rahane, Kohli, Raina and Pujara. The rest of the team remains. This gives us an additional option of using Raina as a part-time bowler or bring in Patil in place of Dhavan as Sydney may assist spin bowling. In the New Year, the disillusioned common man is expecting with high hopes that the government will attend to his pressing problems, all of which remain where they were. With nothing to lose, the much-hyped 'good governance' needs to be delivered sincerely. Appeasing the corporates and strengthening foreign relations to the exclusion of our own domestic issues is certainly not the way to go about it.

Memorable Melbourne draw

APROPOS 'MSD hangs his whites' (ADC, December 31), it looked a bit surprising that during an on going overseas tour an Indian captain passes on the baton to his colleague. However if it is analysed in depth, two reasons would come up naturally – one is Dhoni's overseas records in captaincy do not show any outstanding feat. His present form might have triggered in his mind that Virat is breathing down his neck and is ready to step in to his shoes. Another vital reason is that Dhoni might have thought of the country first, as his presence in the field would provide the required overlapping time to his next captain namely Virat Kohli. Let us therefore welcome the decision of Dhoni's retirement in view of these factors. Wishing Dhoni a very happy retirement from the longest format of the game. — Bikram Banerjea, via email

THE country was promised for months on end during the extensive election campaigns for the Lok Sabha, the mythical 'Shangri-La' – a paradise on earth – “with rivers flowing with milk and honey,” as a senior politician puts it aptly. But this has remained a mere illusion, a mirage, so far with the administrative head of the state still engaged feverishly in realising his obsession

Partial treatment APROPOS your article 'Dutt out of jail on furlough' (ADC, Dec 25), the frequent furloughs and paroles enjoyed by Sanjay Dutt highlights once again that in India, despite the constitution, everyone is not equal under the law. Wealth, privilege and celebrity status influences every aspect of our society, including the police. Even a convicted gang lord enjoys special treatment, whereas a poor man imprisoned for a petty crime has little hope of being granted a furlough. Of all the legacies bequeathed to us by the British, one of the most insidious is the institutionalisation of servility. The controversy generated over the depiction of some scenes in the film PK and the process of government formation in Jammu & Kashmir, seems to have brought the BJP patriarch LK Advani back into the limelight; he was the first Saffron Party leader to appreciate the contents of the film. TIME and again, we come across hooligans vandalising the cinema halls for release of controversial films in this country. Aamir Khan starrer 'PK' is one such film. Thus the reel thing turns real as right wing activists demand a ban on the film. The activists damaged ticket counters, causing movie goers rushing out of the theatres in a panicked state. This is a serious threat to film producers and the cinema hall owners as they regularly come under tremendous pressure to withdraw some scenes from the film or withdraw the film from the theatres. APIS at five airports to check smuggling

An advanced electronic system has been made operational at five international airports across the country to keep tabs on suspicious passengers and check smuggling. The Indian Customs Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), which has been made operational at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru recently, acts as an electronic database of all passengers, crew and other airline staff entering the country. APIS red flags suspicious passengers on the basis of their movement and other parameters and gives a lead to customs officials for follow-up, they said.

EW DELHI: Various ministries, including Home and Defence, have been asked to take necessary steps to prevent leakage of classified information to the media and fix responsibility in case the leakage takes place. NITI Aayog replaces PlanComm; PM to head new body N

EW DELHI: The 65-year-old Planning Commission was on Thursday replaced by a new body, NITI Aayog, that will be headed by the Prime Minister, while all chief ministers will be on its governing council to evolve national development priorities with the involvement of states. Unlike its predecessor set up by late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the socialist command economy era, NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India), will have all Chief Ministers and Lt. Governors on its Governing Council, which PM Narendra Modi, described as a landmark change that will foster spirit of cooperative federalism, reports PTI. "Having served as a CM in the past, I am very much aware of the importance of actively consulting the states. NITI Aayog does precisely that," tweeted Modi.

EW DELHI: Auto makers and white goods manufacturers on Thursday adopted a 'wait and watch' stance on effecting an expected hike in prices in the wake of withdrawal of excise duty concessions, even as major car makers Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Toyota reported robust sales in December. The excise duty concessions given in the interim Budget by the outgoing UPA government in February last and extended by the new Finance Minister Arun Jaitley by six months, ceased to be in force from January 1, 2015. Top government sources said the withdrawal of the lower excise duty on automobiles and consumer durables, including TV and refrigerator, was inevitable in view of the fact that the government had to look at raising revenue and bridging the fiscal deficit targeted at 4.1 per cent of GDP. The decision not to extend the concession could mean an income of about Rs.1,000 crore in the remaining three months of the financial year.

Mash it up Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 2, 2015

When we say dessert mashup, we aren’t talking about pulpy cupcakes and smashed cookies. Odd dessert combinations were a big food trend in 2014, and so, Shirley Mistry & Yamini Walia bring you a list of those that are on their radar so that you can start this year on a sugary-sweet note

W

e love dessert! Take us to a buffet, and we’ll head straight to the dessert counter to see what they have on offer, and then plan the rest of our meal accordingly. If you’re anything like us, we’re sure that you’ve been caught in the sort of dilemma where you’ve eaten too many doughnuts already and are craving a scoop of ice cream before you hit the road, but it is nearly physically impossible to eat another bite. Fret not, because with dessert mashups, your dilemma sorts itself out. They are essentially combinations of different desserts that are served as one dish, and because two is always better than one, we were fans of this food trend from the get-go. So, take a look at some dessert mashups that we’ve worked up an appetite over and can’t wait to get our hands on.

>> If you can’t settle for just one dessert, try a dessert mashup instead!

Duffin Can’t decide whether you want a muffin to go along with your coffee or a doughnut? Never mind, reach for a duffin instead. A combination of the two, a duffin has limitless flavour combinations, but one that we are can’t wait to get our hands on is the classic cinnamon-sugar. While they aren’t available in India just yet, Starbucks (in the UK) is in the middle of a fight with other baking conglomerates over the trademark of the word duffin, so hopefully, their outlets in the city will bring some in soon. But, you don’t have to wait to dig into one, because making them at home is easy. The doughy dessert is simply a spin on a classic muffin recipe. In our opinion, these cute hybrids make for an interesting weekend breakfast as well. >> Duffins are a cross between doughnuts and muffins

Dessert mashups in the city

cragel Half a chocolate croissant, combined with half a bagel, gives you a breakfast bread that sounds heavenly. We love flaky, buttery croissants, but we also love solid, filling bagels. Combine the two, and you don’t have to choose anymore! While you can top them with jam, jelly or even a smear of cream cheese, cragels are a right pain to make on your own and can have disappointing results if you aren’t a seasoned baker. So, we suggest you wait it out until the cragel hits Indian shores.

townies No, we aren’t talking about a SoBo crowd. Half tart, half brownie, townies are truly exciting. These mini tart shells are filled with brownie batter, which when baked, spells chocolate heaven. In fact, these are so easy to make that you can whip up a batch immediately after reading this article. All you need

If your mouth is watering after reading about dessert mashups, you can satisfy your cravings, because a few mashups are available in our city as well. Here’s a list of places that serve such mashups on their menu.

to do, is pour your favourite brownie batter into store-bought tart shells until they are 3/4th full, bake them for 15 minutes at 180°C and you’re done!

the trident patisserie & Delicatessen

Brookies

The Trident Patisserie & Delicatessen was the first in the city to introduce cronuts. Cronuts are available in flavours such as chocolate, hazelnut and lemon flavours and are perfectly coiled with extra cream and frosting that will satisfy your sweet tooth.

theobroma

Cronuts seem to be a craze in our city, because Mumbai’s renowned bakery, Theobroma, also features these on their menu. They offer them in flavours such as red velvet and chocolate, and are glazed with sugar.

suzette creperie & café

Suzette Creperie & Café, at Nariman Point and Bandra, specialises in crepes, a popular term for French pancakes that you can create a mashup with by mixing in fruit, ice cream or a dessert. Their crepes are available in several flavours such as honey, melted Belgian chocolate, nutella and organic jams. Apart from this, you can also create a savoury pancake at Suzette.

Another variation of brownies, brookies are brownies in the form of cookies. They combine the buttery goodness of cookies with the rich, gooey chocolate that is essential to brownies. What’s the best part you ask? They aren’t as crumbly as cookies or as dense as brownies, which makes them the perfect on-the-go snack. But, be warned, because they do contain a fair amount of butter and your waist will loathe you for going overboard!

chocolate chip-cinnamon rolls Think chocolate-chip and cinnamon together. It sounds tempting, doesn’t it? So, this cinnamon roll stuffed with chocolate chip cookies can easily be termed the best dessert collaboration that we’ve come across. Drizzle it with frosting in order to ensure a gooey texture. You have no idea how delicious these rolls will taste as well as smell. continued on pg 14 «

iNdiaN mashups Like with all other food trends, the Indian market is slowly catching on and modifying dessert mashups. Here’s a list of the Indian versions of dessert mashups, which will definitely leave you asking for more

paaN iCe-Cream

If you’ve been living in Mumbai for a while, you’ve probably come across paan ice-cream at several icecream joints. Our favourite is definitely the flavour available at Ice Cream Works, located near Chowpatty.

iNdiaN spiCed CheeseCake

Tea is a religion in India, so an Indian spiced cheesecake, which is an infusion of tea and cream cheese, is bound to be a favourite. Head to Square at Novotel or J W Marriott in Juhu, for a dose of this delicious dessert. That’s not all! Square at Novotel also serves Bharwan Gulab Jamun and Angoori Rasmalai.

apple Jalebi WiTh rabri

Most of us have lived on the delectable combination of jalebi and rabri throughout our childhoods. This classic dessert has been given a twist in the form of apple jalebis with rabri. Apple Jalebis are fritters soaked in rosy fragrant syrup. This dessert may not be available in Mumbai, but Alila Diwa in Goa features this dessert on their menu.

>> Milky buns are doughnuts that are filled with ice cream and are very easy to make at home continued from pg 13 «

Weird food mashups

milky buN When we read about milky buns, our first reaction was to drop what we were doing and pore over scores of recipes that tell you how to make this creamy, dreamy dessert. A combination of ice cream and doughnuts, this dessert has the cakey goodness of doughnuts and the ice-cold, creamy texture of ice cream as its filling. Simply pipe ice cream into storebought doughnuts (we predict that this dessert will be a winner at your next summer terrace party), or bake doughnuts from scratch before you fill them in. Either way, this dessert is too good to pass up on! >> We love the flaky texture of a cronut

While we’re talking about food mashups (and we’d pick up a piece of any one of the items on this list in a heartbeat), we also came across some food mashups that are slightly dubious and seem to be a strange blend of flavours, whichever way you look at them. Take a look.

Nacho lasagne

Use salty nachos coated in that distinctively artifical-tasting cheese powder instead of lasagne sheets to create this dish. While we have no issues with eating the two separately, when they’re combined, the match is oddly unsettling.

Turducken

A chicken stuffed inside a duck, which is then stuffed inside a turkey. Does this sound like too much meat to handle? We thought so too.

ramen pizza

A pizza that uses noodles as its crust? We’re on the fence about this creation. While we love our noodles and pepperoni laden bread equally, mix the two together and you can’t help but cringe!

apple-pie freNCh ToasT Another French delicacy is ApplePie French Toast, which uses an apple pie spiced batter and sautéed apples with apple pie spiced syrup. Once you’ve cooked the toast, top it up with the apple pie topping and whipped cream. Finally, drizzle over the leftover syrup from the apple pie mixture and enjoy!

brioChe CroissaNT What do you get when you combine a buttery croissant with the most buttery bread of them all — brioche? 100% deliciousness! Fill them with chocolate, ripe fruit or simply dust them with sugar, a brioche croissant is a heavenly twist on two delectable sweet treats and one that we can’t wait to try out. The recipe is time consuming and requires you to make the dough a night in advance, but the results are well worth the effort.

Chicken waffle tenders

While fried chicken and waffles are a south American staple, when chicken is coated in sweet waffle batter and deep fried, the result is a crunchy, sweet coating that gives way to moist, juicy chicken. We’d much rather stick to the original combination!

CroNuT A croissant and a doughnut are the premise for cronuts, which are becoming increasingly popular in the city. While we always go back to the simple chocolate or glazed variant, you can go crazy with flavour combinations. Drench it in maple syrup or top it with crispy bits of bacon for a breakfast fit for the gods. Yummy!

freNCh paNCake On a Sunday morning, nothing can satiate your stomach more than a delicious stack of pancakes. And, this French pancake is no different. It can be prepared in two finger-licking ways, either by dipping the pancake in French toast batter or by dipping the French toast in pancake batter. To enhance your tastebuds, you can fill the pancakes with anything, ranging from chocolate sauce to fresh fruits.

WoNuT If the combination of a croissant and doughnut is called a cronut, you can imagine what a wonut stands for. Yes, you guessed it right, the delightful wonut is a waffle and doughnut hybrid. Dip it in a sugar, marshmallow, maple or chocolate glaze, and finish it with toppings such as sprinkles, chocolate shavings and candied pistachios.

« interview rahul Bhat

Ugly is tUrning oUt to be beaUtifUl Actor Rahul Bhat, who is still remembered as Sameer from the popular television serial Heena, is back on the silver-screen with Anurag Kashyap’s latest film, Ugly. Rohit Pramar caught up with him to talk about the film that’s been getting rave reviews

n Are you happy with the response to Ugly?

which was followed by the comedy Nayee Padosan. But, I was tired of giving a 100% to every role I played and not getting the results I desired. So, I decided to give myself a break and relax. I thought I deserved it because I had worked really hard. Call it stupid or crazy, but I didn’t meet any directors or producers after that. I just wanted to work with people who gave their 100%, just like I did. That’s when Ugly happened. I have a production company, so in the meantime we made shows such as Tum Dena Saath Mera, Chhu Kar Mere Mann Ko and Meri Doli Tere Angana. I still remember my friends saying that while I did meet producers or directors, it seemed as though I would only do a film if Anurag Kashyap offered me a role. Strangely enough, that’s exactly what happened!

It’s turning out to be beautiful. I’ve been reading all the reviews and people have been calling and congratulating me. It’s really overwhelming and heart-warming to see that people love the film as well as my work in it. n How challenging was it to play this role?

It was actually a very challenging role. I play a father whose daughter is missing, so I had to have this wired look. We wanted the character to look older, with dark circles. So, through most of the shooting for the film, I was hungry and sleep deprived! I also indulged in a few drinks to really look the part. However, I thoroughly enjoyed playing the role. n Did you have any expectations from the film?

n How did you get this role?

I always thought that the film was for a niche audience. So, I’m surprised that people from all over the country who have seen it are calling me and telling me how much they loved it. I didn’t know that it would appeal to such a wide audience. I’m really happy that it has!

I met Anurag at a party and he immediately offered me the film. It was kind of surprising. >> Rahul Bhat found his role in Ugly challenging, but fun

n After Nayee Padosan, you disappeared for almost eight

years. What kept you busy? I did the TV show Heena for five years. After that, I debuted in Bollywood with Umesh Mehra’s Yeh Mohabhat Hai,

anu Parekh is as acquainted with the city of Benaras as he is with the back of his own hand. The city has been his muse for the better part of his career and through his exhibition, titled City of Magical Light, Manu hopes to highlight the various moods of the city. Literally encapsulating the magic of light in his artwork, pieces from this show will accurately display the glittery waters of the Ganges on a hot, sunny day and the flickering flames of prayer lamps at dusk when the city comes alive with the sound of prayer bells ringing feverishly and devotees chanting. Apart from merely depicting light, Manu has also used silhouettes of temples and shadows that they cast to create pieces of artwork that are truly breathtaking. Manu explains the inspiration behind the collection, telling us, “In Benaras, also known as the city of light, I observed the phenomenon of two kinds of lights. One is natural and the other is man-made. God coloured the evenings with a yellow and red sky and its reflections on water. Man-made light emanated from temples and this confluence created the City of Magical Light.” When Up to January 5 Where Gallery Art & Soul, 1 Madhuli Shivsagar Estate, Worli Contact www.galleryartnsoul.com

Mobile accessories are aplenty, but finding ones that are durable, stylish and good quality isn’t easy. So, Shirley Mistry tells you about a few websites that have a good selection to pick from

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM he Bombay Store is steeped in history. With its origins in British India, around the time of the Swadeshi movement (a strategy that propagated the use of Indian goods over British made ones), the flagship store in Fort is one of Mumbai’s favourite retail outlets. With wood-heavy décor, the interiors of the store do justice to the colonial buildings that it is nestled in. So, when The Bombay Store set up shop in Khar, I was really looking forward to visiting it. Walking down Linking Road, the familiar orange signboard, with its trumpeting elephant, peeks through the trees that line this busy street, making it hard to miss. Step inside and you’ll immediately notice the slight contemporary touch that they have tried to give the décor at this new outpost. Sadly, the décor didn’t impress me much — it was hardly reminiscent of the grand

interiors that I associate the brand with, and it wasn’t funky enough to stand out. But, when it comes to stores, it’s more about what the shelves hold and less about how they look. So, let’s get down to business. The first level stocks a variety of knickknacks that are perfect if you’re looking to add a subtle Indian touch to your home décor. From funky coasters and brightly coloured mugs, to illustrated iPad covers and notebooks, there’s a wide variety of designs to pick from. The contemporary touch is also visible in their product range, with notebooks that feature funky quotes, clocks with funny illustrations, and a range of beautiful sculptures that was inspired by dancers in ethnic outfits. I fell in love with a traditionally designed chest of drawers —

CYANKART If you’re still only looking for a good case without too many designs, log on to Cyankart. They have a host of options for different phone models and while Dailyobjects is a great option, Cyankart is definitely more affordable, and features regular sales as well. Although their New Year’s special sale ended yesterday, keep an eye open for discount vouchers. What we love most about Cyankart is that they offer skins for your mobile phones as well. So, if you are looking for a more permanent change, log on to Cyankart for options. Where www.cyankart.com colours such as orange, green and yellow tend to look really garish when they’re used on furniture, but The Bombay Store balances them with great designs, making them look very attractive. The large basement is devoted to bits and bobs, furnishings and home décor items such as bed covers, pillows, cases, lampshades and photo frames, along with a smattering of mugs, jewellery boxes and tea from The Indian Bean. Again, the items here offer great variety, impressive designs and a refreshing contemporary touch. Heading back up, the centrepiece of the store, which I had somehow missed seeing earlier, caught my eye. It featured a range of laptop bags and iPad covers, with black and white images of colonial Mumbai. From the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to the Gateway of India, these bags feature beautiful imagery and are a collection that stayed with me for hours after I left the store. Overall, I was rather impressed with the collection at The Bombay Store. The prices range from `400 to `2,000 for small personal and home decor items, while bed covers and large sculptures are priced between `3,000 and `5,000. The designs are well-balanced and are contemporary enough for a classy, new-age home. Their collection of pillows and bed covers wasn’t the best that I’ve seen, but it is their range of quirky personal items (especially those bags with iconic buildings printed on them) that makes this outlet in Khar a must-visit. Burger King has finally set up shop in Mumbai and is opening outlets in quick succession. Sara Shah tells you how they fare

D

id you spend at least a few seconds wondering whether the restaurant’s name was spelled wrong? It took us a little while to get used to it too. The Happi in Me So Happi is an abbreviation for happiness, or at least, that’s what the owner, Aarathi Arambhan tells us. She explained that the name stems from the belief that Me So Happi serves unlimited happiness on a plate. The multi-cuisine café looks relatively small from the outside, so I didn’t expect an extensive menu. However, as soon as I entered it, I realised that its long, narrow hallways make it almost as large as any other restaurant in the city. The unique chequered flooring also caught my attention when I stepped in. Me So Happi emits a London-like vibe, thanks to the telephone-booth lookalike door. The place will also remind you of your childhood, as it prominently displays mason jars filled with Kismi toffees, antique toys, a teal-coloured kitchenette, robot stickers and board games. But, the most interesting aspect of the café is its graffiti wall, which pays homage to Mumbai. The lighting at the restaurant is relatively brighter than other cafés, but not so bright that it will blind you. After scrutinising the interiors, we finally decided to start our evening with two mocktails — Kokum Bounty (`150)

and Mango Surprise (`175). Kokum is their speciality for good reason — the drink was delicious! With a strong hit of Kokum, it completely refreshed our senses. However, the mango-based mocktail failed to impress us as it was too sweet. Next, we tried their salads — Quinoa, Beet & Smoked Cheese Salad (`495) and Chicken & Egg (`300). The quinoa salad is perfect for health conscious folks and tastes better than most healthy dishes out there. But, it was the light, appetising chicken salad that I gobbled up in a matter of minutes. Most chicken and egg salads are heavy on vegetables and don’t contain enough chicken or egg, but this one didn’t disappoint us on that front. As part of our starters, we opted for Prawns On Fire (`450), Leek & Feta Cigar Roll (`300) and Bombilo (`300). Presented perfectly on a plate, the Prawns on Fire became the dish of our night. My dining companion and I couldn’t get enough of this starter, as they fried it perfectly, without compromising on the flavour of the prawns. We were so content with the prawns that the other two starters seemed just okay, though they were quite decent. Moving on to the main course, we decided to try their burgers — Big Bad Meanie (`425) and Mighty Melt (`400). The Mighty Melt had a chicken patty with

chicken bacon, chimi churi sauce and eggs. The buns were extremely soft and the extra helping of chicken was exactly what we wanted in our burger. However, it was the Big Bad Meanie that earned brownie points. Wonder why? Well, it contains a heady mixture of lamb, mushroom, bacon and smoked cheese. Sounds mouth-watering, doesn’t it? From the tempting dessert menu, we decided to try the Blueberry Mousse (`110), Classic Tiramisu (`110) and Fudge Pecan Nut Pie (`175). While the mousse disappointed us with its mediocre consistency, we couldn’t get enough of the tiramisu and the pie. With the perfect blend of coffee and rum, the Tiramisu scored a perfect 10 in my book! The pie was extremely soft, perfectly sweetened and its ingredients blended well with each other, making it a must-try! Overall, I was quite satisfied with my experience at Me So Happi and recommend it to anyone who is willing to try something new, while floating back to a little childhood nostalgia. ALL ABouT THe CHeeSe T he Little Door, a quaint restaurant and bar in Lokhandwala, is known for its delicious Mediterranean fare and unique cocktails. They recently launched a new menu, which focuses on giving popular Mediterranean dishes an Indian touch. Compared to the previous menu, the new one focuses heavily on cheese-based dishes — not that I’m complaining. The Cream Cheese Bagels (`183), in particular, are a must-try. Filled with flavourful cream cheese, they are sinful and delicious, as is their pizza (`293), which you can customise according to your preferences. They don’t skimp on the cheese or the meat, and it has well-balanced flavours and a crisp, thin crust. It also offers

The Little door recently introduced a new menu. dev Goswami tells you what to expect

good value for money. The Pita Parcels (`223) — their take on traditional hummus and pita — make for a another great dish. I tried the chicken shwarma variant; the filling was juicy, the bread was warm and fresh, and the dish was well-spiced, making it another highlight of my night at The Little Door. I also tried the Tequila Chicken Kabob (`243) and the Lambonioni (`293). The chicken was just average — it was well cooked, but the flavours just didn’t appeal to me. The lamb, on the other hand, was cooked in a brilliant rosemary and onion gravy, but the meat was disappointingly tough. Unfortunately, I wasn’t as impressed by

their new bar menu. I tried the tequila-based Extraordinary (`447) but was disappointed by the lack of balance. It tasted too watered down and the flavours didn’t work together. They have an interesting range of house special cocktails, but I opted instead for a classic Whiskey Sour (`297), which was perfect. Overall, their new menu is worth a try. But, I wasn’t as wowed as I was when I first visited The Little Door. here was a time when, if you mentioned the words Burger and King together to a 20-something, they would eagerly insist that it was about time the international fast food chain stepped into the Indian market. After much fanfare, the chain is finally here, and of course, I had to try it out to see what the hype surrounding it was really about. So, I made a trip to the second Burger King outlet in Mumbai, located at Infiniti Mall in Andheri. The place was brimming with people, all gorging on massive burgers that looked quite appetising. To kickstart our meal, we ordered the Chicken Chilli Cheezos, which were priced at `69 for four pieces. They were spicy and contrary to the name, weren’t filled with enough chicken. The cheese blocked out any taste of chicken that the dish might have had. It’s not that I don’t like food that is filled with oodles of cheese, but if the name suggests that it has chicken in it, then I’d like to taste it. However, I still liked the dish. >> We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Burger King

Moving on, we tried three burgers, which included the Mutton Whopper (`169), The Chicken Whopper (`119) and the Paneer King burger (`109). I am not a big fan of mutton, and so, I was a bit hesitant to try the Mutton Whopper, and expected the chicken counterpart to be much better. But, I was proven wrong. The Mutton Whopper was far better than the chicken and was full of flavour. The mutton mince patty was cooked to perfection, but the Chicken Whopper, on the other hand, was too dry for my taste and lacked flavour. The only flavour it had came from the jalapeños and cheese. Even the Paneer King tasted better in comparison. It was spicy and made to suit the Indian palette. Three burgers down, I was really starting to doubt my ability to eat any dessert. But, we slowly nibbled at our delicious 180 degrees Oreo Ice Cream (`75), which was served upside down, in order to prove the thickness and creaminess of the ice cream. Also, if you love a good milkshake, you should try their Chocolate Milkshake (`79). All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, and while hyped up places are usually disappointing, Burger King didn’t fare too badly. The only qualm I have is the prices, which I think are a little high for a simple burger at a fast food chain, especially when most people rely on fast food for affordable meals. But, if you don’t mind spending a little extra for good quality, Burger King is the place to go. Where Food Court, Infiniti Mall, Lokhandwala, Andheri (w) Meal for two `500

Overseas investors pumped in a record Rs 1.6 lakh crore (USD 26 billion) into the Indian debt market in 2014 mainly on account of high interest rate and government’s reform agenda. The latest round of inflow came after they pulled out around Rs 51,000 crore (USD 8 billion) in 2013. The inflow by Foreign Institutional Investors in 2014 has significantly contributed to taking the cumulative net investments into the Indian debt markets since being allowed over two decades ago, in November 1992, to Rs 2.6 lakh crore. Market experts said that overseas investors remained bullish on the Indian debt markets throughout 2014, barring the month of April.

Ponzi Crackdown; Sebi Orders Refund Of Over Rs 60,000 Cr

Armed with new powers to check illegal money pooling schemes, Sebi asked 117 entities in 2014 to refund more than Rs 60,000 crore to the defrauded investors and the crackdown is set to get stronger in the new year. The amount raised by these entities through illegal Collective Investment Schemes and unauthorised deemed public issues could be much higher, as Sebi mostly relied on the disclosures made by those companies about quantum of funds. The total size of such funds exceeds Rs 1 lakh crore after including the cases where Sebi’s action has been challenged in courts. Sebi’s action against these firms followed the amendments to the Sebi Act and other related legislation’s to empower the capital market regulator to crack down on ponzi schemes and other investment frauds. An analysis of orders passed by Sebi during 2014 shows that Sebi took action against 117 such companies, out of which those based in West Bengal account account for a majority. As many as 49 out of 117 companies are based in West Bengal, of which 43 were registered in Kolkata itself. — Business Desk with input from PTI

Is also looking into heralding global best standards on corporate governance practices of listed companies By A Business Reporter

T

o revitalise the primary market, regulator Sebi will soon notify new norms to sell shares through electronic Initial Public Offers (e-IPOs), while manipulators may face stronger action in the new year with tougher norms being finalised for insider trading. Besides, Sebi is looking into herald the global best standards on corporate governance practices of the listed companies. The Listing Agreement signed by the companies with the stock exchanges would be converted into Listing Regulations for better enforcement of the Listing norms. New measures are also on anvil to revive the bond market and soon Sebi would come out with final norms for listing and trading of municipal bonds with an aim to channelise household investments

for infrastructure building and also contribute to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Smart Cities programme. One of the keenly awaited move from Sebi in the new year would be e-IPO mechanism, through which investment in public offerings can be done online without signing any physical documents. E-IPOs will help in fast-track the public offer process and lower costs, besides allowing investors to apply for shares and buy them at a click on computers without the need for signature on bulky physical documents, reports PTI. Currently, applications for IPOs can be uploaded on a real-time basis only through ASBA (application supported by blocked amount), only self-certified syndicate banks are authorised to manage and offer ASBA, which allows application money to stay in an investor's bank account until the shares are allotted. The board of Sebi had already approved the proposal to use secondary market infrastructure for public issuance called e-IPOs and revamping insider trading norms to prevent the menace. It will soon notify regu-

lations for selling shares through eIPO, sources said. This will facilitate more retail investors in IPOs and the issuance process is likely to undergo a sea change, resulting in reduction in time-lines, they added. At present, the time taken for a company to get listed after initial share sale is around 12 days. Sebi may reduce the post issue timelines from T+12 days (12 days from issue closure to listing and trading) to T+6 days. Once the process gets stabilised, time-lines could be further curtailed to T+2/3 days, the sources said. Despite a stable government coming into power and the resultant buoyant secondary market, fund raising through IPO was just Rs 1,528 crore in 2014. Besides, only six main-board IPOs came to the market. The entire year saw just one follow-on offer. This was by staterun Engineers India Ltd (EIL), which also happens to be the biggest public offer with an issue size of Rs 495 crore. The year, however, witnessed a flurry of activity on the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) platform. There were as many as 40 SME IPOs which collected a total of Rs 267 crore.

Rate Cuts, Reforms On Market Wish-list For 2015 By Sumedha Shankar

A

growth-oriented budget, passage of reform bills in Parliament, reduction in interest rates and stability in global markets top the wish list of Dalal Street for the new year 2015. Driven by robust investor sentiments, impressive foreign fund inflow and formation of a new majority government at the Centre, the stock market benchmark Sensex generated a bumper return of about 30% for investors in 2014. Analysts said markets are keenly waiting for the Union Budget 2015

to be presented in February. The market entities believe the upcoming budget could be a make or break event as this would be first full budget from new government and hopes are high with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley indicating start of second-generation reforms going forward. "In our opinion, long-term investors are waiting on fringes with hope to get clarity on issues related to taxation (especially retrospective), GAAR, FDI in various sectors. Any disappointment from Budget can trigger steep correction in markets," IndiaNivesh Securities' Research Head Daljeet S Kohli said. Market experts said the govern-

ment should ensure smooth functioning of the Budget session and try to pass as many bills as possible because market behaviour will be determined to a large extent by how the budget session steers the way. Highlighting the market wishlist for 2015, Anand Rathi Financial Services' Co-Founder and Vice Chairman Pradeep Gupta said: "Intended reforms such as insurance, GST bill need to be passed by the Parliament before the Budget. RBI to begin reduction of interest rates up to 100 bps during 2015." "A growth oriented budget stimulating investments in infrastructure and boosting consumption demand to be achieved by enabling ease of doing business and stable tax policies." Issues like environment, land, power, coal, mining are to be effectively addressed through administrative and clearance process. This will manifest the impact of relaxed FDI limits in defence, railways and planned increase in insurance, Gupta added. "There is a lot of hope from the new government and having received sufficient time to settle in at centre, the hope for 2015 budget is going to be very high in terms of not only focus on achieving fiscal deficit target but also being path breaking in terms of some of the key expenditure reforms and clearance of GST and insurance bill," Prabhudas Lilladher' Joint Managing Director Amisha Vora said. On expectations from RBI this year, she said, as outlook for inflation has become very benign, it appears that 2015 should be the year where finally we will see reversal in

interest rate cycle. Reliance Securities CEO Vikrant Gugnani said that 2014 turned out to be a great year for many, especially for those who have been linked to the Indian stock market either directly or indirectly, and believed in the India story. "Unfortunately for many others, who continue to remain skeptical and wary of participating in the longterm India growth story through equities, they have just missed 30% gains in 2014 in the Indian stock market," he added. INTERVIEW

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 2, 2015

VIKRAM PLAYS

THE BEAT IN ‘I’ You play multiple characters in the film. Yes. I play a hunchback, a beast, and a body builder who wants to be Mr Tamil Nadu and is in love with a model played by Amy Jackson.

How did you prepare for these roles? I had to undergo three hours of prosthetic make up every day to shoot the character of the beast and the hunchback and I had to gym a lot to look like a body builder and I had to beef up my body so as to stand against the real body builders who were a part of the film. Also for another character I had

to keep a check on my diet and lose 25 to 30 kg to look lean and mean in the film, much to the consternation of my family who were very worried about me.

Hollywood star and Governor Arnold Schwarzegnner attended the music launch of your film in Chennai? Unfortunately I couldn’t meet him as I was shooting with the beast look and it would have been a great privilege to meet him as I am a huge fan of his. You are very choosy about the characters and films

that you do. Yes. Right from my school and college days, when I was doing theatre; I opted for the most challenging characters like if it was the play ‘Julius Caesar’ that we were performing, I would opt for the character of Cassius which was the most challenging and I have always tried to do something different. How was it like working with director Shankar? I have worked with him in ‘Anniyan’ before and he is a technical whiz and has great story telling abilities and he pushes the envelope to a great extent and I have al-

ways enjoyed working with him. I am sure ‘I’ will be his best film so far and will break all box office records. What is the USP of the film? The USP of the film is A R Rehman’s music and the choreography by Bosco-Caesar. And also the brilliant camera work by veteran auteur P C Sreeram. If given a choice ,what Bollywood character would you like to play? I would like to play Gabbar Singh’s character from the film ‘Sholay’ which is my favourite.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 2, 2015

B

ollywood superstition has it that films released on the first Friday of the year don’t do well, so no major film releases on this ‘inauspicious’ time of the year, just some stragglers and no-hopers. In the second week of January, the industry takes a deep breath and starts getting its products out. What can audiences expect in the first few weeks of the new year? To begin with Amit Sharma’s Arjun Kapoor-Sonakshi Sinha-Manoj Bajpai starrer ‘Tevar’ which looks like more hijinks in the Hindi heartland. In the following week, Bipasha Basu, self-proclaimed queen of horror movies, gets to ghostly business in Bhushan Patel’s ‘Alone’, with co-star Karan Singh Grover taking his sixpack abs from TV to films. Prakash Jha takes a break from his political thrillers to produce a comedy called ‘Crazy Cukkad Family’, directed by Ritesh Menon, about a man in coma and his family waiting for him to kick the bucket. Zayed Khan attempts a comeback in a film with the odd title, ‘Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene’, directed by Gurmeet Singh. Then Sonam Kapoor makes another dash towards a hit with Abhishek Dogra’s ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, in which she plays a conwoman, who marries, robs and dumps men. Akshay Kumar and Rana Daggubati team up to fight terror in Neeraj Pandey’s ‘Baby’. The promo of ‘Hawaizaada’ has created a flutter of interest in Vibhu Virender Puri’s film with Ayushmann Khurrana and Mithun Chakraborty as a man trying to build

the world’s first aircraft. From the Bhatt Brothers factory comes Karan Dara’s ‘Khamoshiyan’, an erotic mystery, with newcomer Sapna Pabbi, TV’s Gurmeet Choudhary and Ali Fazal.

body is still interested in Mallika Sherawat, she stars in KC Bokadia’s ‘Dirty Politics’ as an item girl-turned politician, which looks like it’s just up her street. Because Ranbir Kapoor always picks unusual films, all eyes are on Vikramjit Singh’s ‘Roy’, in which he stars with Arjun Rampal and Jaqueline Fernandez. His other big film, Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’, comes later in the year and then there’s ‘Jagga Jasoos’, which he is producing. Rather early in his career, Varun Dhawan’s drops his fluffy romantic hero persona to do Sriram Raghavan’s dark thriller ‘Badlapur’. Arshad Warsi comes up with two films with the same director SubDeepa Gahlot hash Kapoor – ‘Guddu Rangeela’ and the sequel to ‘Jolly LLB’. In February, comes R Balki’s All this and some more, just in the Amitabh Bachchan-Dhanush film, first two months. There’s plenty titled ‘Shamitabh’, which is also cre- more to look for during the followating a buzz with its promos. If any- ing ten months. Happy viewing!

RINGSIDE VIEW

Amitabh enjoys editing of ‘Shamitabh’ A B ollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan says he enjoys being a part of the editing of his upcoming film ‘Shamitabh’ and is impressed by the high technology used in the process. The movie helmed by ‘Paa’ director R Balki, also stars ‘Raanjhanna’ actor Dhanush and Kamal Haasan’s younger daughter Akshara in her debut. “The day was spent with Shamitabh. Discussions on its promotions, its release plans and the involvement of others!” said the actor while praising the high technology and computerised execution, used in film editing now. Bachchan (72) recalled how actors were not allowed to enter the edit room in the old days of Bollywood, saying that it is normal today for actors to sit with the editors. “Actually now being in the company of edit is pretty normal. In those days we were never allowed even 100 meters from the edit room. If perchance you were to find yourself in the edit, you either paid a fine, fed the staff, and left in a hurry before you got beaten up. “The editorial space was sacred. It was here that the film took shape. It was here that it was de-

cided what your performance would be, because the editor has the capacity to completely destroy your performance, or conversely to make you look like a genius, by the flick of a finger!” he said. Amitabh Bachchan has showcased his singing talent again in ‘Shamitabh’, where the megastar is seen crooning ‘Piddly si baatein’ inside a washroom.

ctress Bipasha Basu says her upcoming movie ‘Alone’ is more than just a horror film as it deals with relationship and turmoils of a married couple. The film has been directed by Bhushan Patel and also stars TV actor Karan Singh Grover, who plays the male lead opposite the 35-year-old actress. “‘Alone’ is not a horror film for me. It is a passionate love story for me. Through our characters we have tried to show a realistic love story.

‘Enjoy taking decisions as producer’ B

ollywood actress Priyanka Chopra is all set for her maiden production venture ‘Madamji’, which is currently in pre-production stage. The 32-year-old actress, who will be shooting back-to-back for ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, says she is enjoying the process of taking decisions as a producer. “‘Madamji’ is a fictional story. It’s a story of an item girl, who is thrown in the world of politics. ‘Madamji’ is about woman empowerment. I am enjoying the fact that I am going to office and taking decisions as a producer,” Priyanka said in an interview. “I meet so many assistant directors on my sets and they have some great scripts but don’t get the opportunity. I don’t have the capability of making a big budget film but I will make small films with some great talents. The name of my production house is Purple Pebble Pictures,” she added. The actress said she has some free time during the New Year that she will spend playing dress up for her brother’s marriage. “People are in a festival mood in the last few days before a New Year. My brother is getting married. We are planning a lot for the sangeet and wedding. We are sending invitations and all the cousins are gathering. It is fun time.” Priyanka had a successful year with the release of ‘Mary Kom’ and the actress wants to continue taking bold decisions when it comes to her career. “In my career I have never opted for a safe path. Look at ‘Mary Kom’, do I look like her? During ‘Barfi!’, I was told that I will not be accepted as an autistic girl while people told me I should do something like ‘Fashion’. PTI

Actress Bipasha Basu says her upcoming horror movie deals with relationship and turmoils of a married couple

MORE THAN JUST A Everyone who is married or who have been in a relationship will identify with this. Many aspects of relationships has been shown. So the film is not only sexy. There is a lot of depth,” Bipasha said in an interview. In the film, which is a remake of a 2007 Thai film of the same name, Bipasha will be seen in a double role as she plays a conjoined twin. The actress said she had a very hard time during the shooting of the film. “They are twins but are different from each other as one is alive and one is dead and they are both in love with Kabir (played by Karan). The shooting was difficult as I had to be joined with my body double. Shooting was a different experience as a lot of time we had to take care of the distance and other technicalities while filming the conjoined part,” she said. Bipasha was all praises for her co-

HORROR FILM star Karan, who is making his Bollywood debut with the film, and said that the actor has a lot of potential. “He has a lot of potential and is very talented. He can be an A-list actor in our business- he looks great, he can dance and his emotional scenes are his strength. He is an easy fit for the films we make.” When asked if she had any apprehensions working with a newcomer, Bipasha said, “There were no qualms on doing a film with a TV actor and he is not even a newcomer. He has been in the industry for the last 10 years. He is a popular actor and has a strong fan following.” Bipasha said she has no idea why the maximum number of films of this genre are offered to her.

INDIAN CRICKET NEEDS NEW DIRECTION: LAWSON SPORTS

S

YDNEY: Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Test retirement might have been sudden but former Australian pacer Geoff Lawson feels it was time for a new direction in Indian cricket and newly-appointed captain Virat Kohli seems ready for the leadership role. "Seeing Virat Kohli's leadership in the first Test at Adelaide, I think he is ready and I quite liked what I saw. First of all he doesn't talk too much when he is captain which is always good. You have to do that and respect players as well as umpires, and lead by example. He did a good job there and perhaps he is the guy to take India to the next level," Lawson said. Having already conceded the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia with a 0-2 trail after the drawn third Test in Melbourne, many believed that Dhoni should have stayed on for the series finale and Lawson agrees on that note. "The Sydney Test might have been a good opportunity to get one good last Test in Australia, to win there and prove that his Test captaincy does work. It would have been a nice farewell for him," he said. Lawson, who has also coached Pakistan for a couple of years, had encouraging words for Duncan Fletcher. "Duncan Fletcher is a very experienced coach and has had a lot of success over the years, but not with the Indian team. It is time perhaps for the BCCI and Indian cricket to look elsewhere, somewhere who has fresh ideas and a fresh perspective, and can take them forward," he said. Fletcher has seen India lose their last six consecutive

Team India attends afternoon tea session with Australian PM SYDNEY: The touring Indian cricketers and their home team counterparts were today hosted by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott for an afternoon tea at his official residence on the New Year's Day. Players from both sides posed for the official photo session with Abbott at Kirribilli House, his second official residence. Dressed in their casual Team India T-Shirts and trousers, the players were photographed with Abbott with the BCCI posting the pictures on its Twitter handle. "The Indian cricket team was hosted for afternoon tea by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on the first day of the new year, on Thursday," the BCCI said. There was another photograph of the newly-appointed Indian captain Virat Kohli, his Australian counterpart Steven Smith and Abbott. MS Dhoni who retired from Tests after the Melbourne match -was not seen in any of the photos posted. It remains unclear whether he attended the event or not.

overseas Test series, plus one at home to England in 201213 and will certainly have to pull something out of his hat before the Zimbabwean's term expires after the World Cup. "Indian cricket needs to set itself a goal of doing better in Test cricket overseas. They need to set that goal for themselves, go away and per-

form in different conditions, and take pride in that success when they achieve it. They need to develop that feeling because you just cannot rely on playing well at home," opined Lawson. "Not many teams are winning in Australia. You have to get used to the hard wickets and bounce here, and they

have done that. India have competed on this tour. They have batted very well and bowled well in spells. They have been more competitive than the established team was on the 2011-12 tour, despite the score-line. India could have won either of the first two Tests," he added. Indeed, it has been a steep learning curve for a young team, playing only overseas Tests in this calendar year. Perhaps it has begun to show some results, with three out of top-four scorers in the current series being Indian batsmen. "In the last twelve months, these young batsmen, Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, they have played a lot of international

cricket in different conditions. "They have played in such conditions in the younger teams as well. You get better with time touring to different places. But their bowling has been pretty inconsistent," Lawson said. Being speedster himself, the 57-year-old Lawson had a word of advice for the Indian medium-pacers and the strategies involved. "They can bowl fast and move the ball, certainly they have the potential. They have been patchy and bowled well for short durations, but that is hurting them. You need to have proper game plans and coaching instructions in place for a young bowling attack like this. You have to set proper fields and inspire confidence in them.

PM Tony Abbott reveals he was a good sledger S

YDNEY: As tensions between the Australian and Indian cricket teams reach boiling point, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has revealed sledging was his only strength as a cricketer. Speaking at an afternoon tea for the teams at Kirribilli House in Sydney on Thursday, Mr Abbott spoke of his time as a cricketer during his student days at Oxford University. "I couldn't bat, I couldn't bowl, I couldn't field, but I could sledge, and I think I held my place in the team on this basis, and I promise there'll be none of that today," said the former captain of Oxford's Middle Common Room team of the Queen's College. Emotions are riding high between the Australian and Indian sides following an explosive series that has featured plenty of sledging.

Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott with Indian cricket Test team captain Virat Kohli and Australian captain Steven Smith during the afternoon tea hosted by PM Tony Abbott at Kirribilli House in Sydney on Thursday. It's feared things could get Mr Abbott weighed into the worse during next week's debate over Australian capfourth and final Test at the tain Steven Smith's decision Sydney Cricket Ground. to delay the declaration in the

third Test at the MCG as the hosts failed to take the remaining four wickets to win the match and take a 3-0 series lead. The home side had to settle for a draw, but still reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with an unassailable 2-0 in the four-match series. "When I told people last night that I was lucky enough to be hosting the Australian and the Indian cricket teams here today, the only question that they assailed me with was `What did you think of the declaration?'," Mr Abbott said. "My initial thought was it was none of my business. My further thought was that Steven Smith did absolutely his duty, because it is his duty to put Australia in the strongest possible position because, as India's batsmen have repeatedly demonstrated this summer, you can never take India for granted."

NEW DELHI: The sudden decision of Mahendra Singh Dhoni to retire from Test cricket has also given rise to a question as to who will be Virat Kohli's deputy with the names of Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin emerging as possible candidates. "It will be interesting to see what is the choice of selection committee led by Sandeep Patil and the feedback that they get from Team Director Ravi Shastri. Ravi's point of view will be key in this regard. As of now, the two players who are in with a chance are Rahane and Ashwin," a BCCI source in the know of things told PTI. According to the sources Rahane, who is now a permanent fixture across all three formats looks to be a front-runner but Ashwin by virtue of his seniority cannot be ruled out altogether. "What works for Rahane is his calm demeanour which could possibly complement Kohli's aggressive intent. They could prove to be ideal foil for each other. Also Rahane has the performance to merit that place (1026 runs in 13 Tests with 3 centuries)," the official said. While 28-year-old Ashwin is senior in terms of number of Test matches (23 Tests, 114 wickets, 956 runs), there have been times when he has not found a place in the playing XI in Test matches in overseas conditions. India's next overseas assignment will be a Test series in Bangladesh, post IPL and before that there is only tri-series and ICC World Cup where Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be leading the side.

Axar, Raina in selection radar ahead of fourth Test

S

YDNEY: Mahendra Singh Dhoni's sudden retirement from Test cricket has left the Indian thinktank fretting over the ideal playing combination that will take on Australia in the fourth and final Test at the SCG starting next Tuesday. While Wriddhiman Saha's selection by virtue of being the back-up keeper is a certainty, the team management might be mulling on a couple of changes in their line-up with a final shot at redemption during the first assignment of 2015. The Sydney Cricket Ground has proved to be helpful for the slow bowlers with the track offering some turn by the end of the third day. Spinners come in handy during the third and the fourth innings of the Test matches in Sydney. This might just bring in rookie left-arm spinner Axar Patel into the equation if India plan to go with two specialist spinners instead of the lone spinner in Ravichandran Ashwin. Patel was flown in as a replacement for an injured Ravindra Jadeja currently undergoing rehabilitation for his left-shoulder injury.

with the effort. "That wasn't acceptable for an Australian cricket team. We set our standards a lot higher than that and we've got to improve. We can't do that to our bowlers. Our bowlers are creating chances and we only need them to create 20 chances," he said. "We should be doing the best we can to take all those chances and make the job as easy as we can for the bowlers. They've got a hard slog out there. It's not acceptable from us. Everyone knows it wasn't the way Australians present themselves in the field and we've got to be better." The Indians have targetted Haddin with short deliveries but the Aussie said he is not perturbed. "I think I've said for a while I feel in better touch with the bat than I did leading into last summer. It was good to contribute with the bat the other day but the big thing was we had to get through that night," Haddin said. "We couldn't expose our lower order late that night and that was the most pleasing thing from Steven and my point of view - getting through that uncomfortable 10 overs knowing the Indian bowlers had to back up the next day," he said.

Singh Dhoni's retirement from Test cricket, Australian vice-captain Brad Haddin today said the Indian is a "true gentleman" of the game and has left his team in a much better position than it was when he took over. "The great thing about MS Dhoni was his temperament. No matter where the game was going you wouldn't know. He had a pretty even tempo through whatever situation was going on and that's why he's had such longevity in the game," Haddin said. "I was very surprised (he retired). He's been a great servant for Indian cricket, the way he handles himself and the team, the calmness he brings to a very, very big job in captaining the Indian cricket team. He was great to play against and a true gentleman of the game. I think he's left Indian cricket in a better place than it was when he took over." Dhoni's sudden retirement has led to Virat Kohli's elevation as India's skipper for the fourth and final Test here from January 6. Kohli has created quite a stir in the series by aggressively taking on the Aussies in verbal duels both on and off the field. Asked if the hosts are planning anything specific to tackle Kohli, Haddin said, "I'm not here to talk about Kohli."

YDNEY: Defending his team's tactics in the drawn third cricket Test against India, Australian vicecaptain Brad Haddin today said the hosts earned the right to go about the way they wanted after playing India out of the series. "We won the series, that's the main thing we took out of it. I think we earned the right to play the way we did in Melbourne. We've played India totally out of the series," he said. "Come Sydney if we get ourselves into that situation it'd be different because we've taken India out of the series. We earned the right to play the way we did. "We knew exactly where the game was going, what path it was, and we were very happy with where it ended up with a series win. We went out there and said if we were to create 10 chances we'll win the game and we did create 10 chances, we just didn't take a few," he added. Australia have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead after the third Test ended in a draw in Melbourne. The home team was criticised for being defensive in Melbourne and also drew flak for their particularly sloppy fielding. YDNEY: Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood feels that had they bowled the last four overs in the Boxing Day Test against India, a win for the home side would have been possible at MCG. Steven Smith shook hands

ASCO: Mohun Bagan's chances of making it to the semi-finals hit a roadblock when they were held to a 1-1 draw by gritty Pune FC in their second group league encounter of the Federation Cup football tournament. Pune FC have collected four points from two matches while Bagan have logged only two points from as many games. They now have an uphill task of winning both their remaining group league games in order to have any chance of making it to the last-four stage. The green and maroon brigade, who had better share of scoring opportunities, took the lead through Pierre Boya in the 26th minute and Ryuji Sueoka restored parity for Pune FC from the spot in the 66th minute. Bagan, who created bagfull of chances, had themselves to blame for not collecting full points due to the profligacy of their strikers. Pune FC coach Karim Bencherifa started with Sueoka and Eric Brown in attack while Matthew Gonsalves and Luciano Sabrosa filled in at the heart of defence. His counterpart Sanjoy Sen had Boya partnering Chennayin FC's Balwant Singh in attack while Lalkamal Bhowmick was expected to sit deep as the defensive playmaker in the team. Bagan who drew their first match against Bengaluru FC were looking forf full points started on attacking note as Sony Norde delivered a perfect cross in the box which was headed by Balwant to Boya, who could only volley it straight to Amrinder Singh in goal, within five minutes of the start. In the 11th minute, Katsumi Yusa found Balwant with a perfect cross that he controlled well but failed to

Bagan who probed into the rivals had another chance to surge ahead in the 20th minute but Balwant header went over. Five minutes later, it was Sony Norde again who orchestrated the attack from the left and had his shot blocked by Laramluaha Hmar before Pierre Boya skied his effort from close range.Mariners after coming close to scoring on few occassions took the lead in the next minute itself through Boya's bullet header. It was that man Norde whose first effort from the corner was cleared out back to him and he put in the perfect cross towards Boya from the second effort. An unmarked Boya made no mistake putting his header at the back of the net. In the 33rd minute, Norde again put in a delightful cross from the left that Balwant chested down towards his strike partner, but Boya could only volley it straight to a grateful Amrinder.

Then it was Balwant's turn to misfire once again as he failed to bury a sitter from about four yards out. In the 42nd minute, Balwant almost pounced on a misunderstanding between Raju Yumnam and Amrinder Singh as he took the ball away from the keeper but could not keep it in eventually, letting the chance slip away. At the stroke of half time, Katsumi Yusa took Raju for a ride and broke into the box from the right but instead of passing it to an unmarked Boya, chose to go for goal himself and smashed it high with the entire goal staring at him. Pune FC started the second half much better and Eric's shot was just off target after substitute Thongkhosiem Haokip had flicked on a long ball for Sueoka who found the Liberian on the right. Lampard lambasted by football fans in New York N

EW YORK: Manchester City have extended Frank Lampard’s contract with the club until the end of the season following 48 hours of negotiations with the Premier League ahead of the expiry of his short-term deal at the club. The 36-year-old was due to officially become a New York City FC player on January 1 after agreeing a move to the newly-formed MLS franchise — owned by City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan — in August. But after scoring six times for Manuel Pellegrini’s team since moving to City, the former Chelsea and England player has thrashed out a deal to remain at the club until the end of the season and will therefore miss the start of New York’s inaugural MLS campaign, which begins in March. Lampard’s failure to complete his move on schedule provoked an angry backlash against both the player and Manchester City from football fans in the United States. New York City FC fans' group Third Rail said fans who had bought season

tickets and merchandise had been betrayed. A fans' statement said: "On behalf of the Third Rail, we would like to publicly denounce City Football Group's and Frank Lampard’s decision. Many fans, including our members, decided to support the team, committed to season tickets, and bought merchandise under the impression that Frank Lampard would be playing for New York City Football Club, not Manchester City. Many of those fans are rightly outraged by this decision, and we support any course of action they take to voice their discontent over this decision."
