Fourth suicide in less than 15 days on Bandra-Worli Sea Link By Zuber Ansari

here seems to be no end to suicides occurring off the BandraWorli Sea Link (BWSL) as another 40-year-old man jumped to his death on Monday morning from the Worli side of the bridge. In a mere span of two weeks, this was the fourth suicide on the Sea Link. The deceased has been identified as Vikram Shirish Vasudev, residence of Prabhadevi locality in south Central. He was going towards Bandra from Worli, and was driving a Wagon R car. At around 6

Ganesh festival

AROUND THE WORLD France

T

he Ganesh Chaturthi festivities in the rest of France are nowhere as big as the celebrations in Paris. The Sri Manikka Vinayakar temple in Paris celebrates the occasion grandly, with even a chariot procession being organised during for the time. The festival is celebrated in the temple for ten days, at the end of which the 'Utsava Murti' (the idol specially created only to be worshipped for the duration of a festival) of Lord Ganesha is mounted on a chariot which is pulled through the streets by thousands of local Hindus dressed in traditional costumes. Two water trucks proceed some distance ahead of the chariot and wash the road to purify the path for Lord Ganesh. Numerous devotees of the accompany the idol, dancing and singing 'bhajans'.

For the first time Government Officers and Employees Resident Quarters have displayed a Ganesh Idol in their premises after they were alloted flats by the government of Maharashtra. The members of the mandal have installed the idol on a paper-made ‘Makar’ amidst the decoration, promoting the message of ‘Eco-friendly environment.’

Sanjay Shinde, President of the Society Ghatkopar: “It was important for the members to get to know each other as they were all new to each other. In order to boost the participation of the new members, the society decided to involve all of them by organising games for kids to the middle-aged and senior citizens. Shinde said that they were overwhelmed by the numbers who came in and all members felt that for future events like Navratri and Diwali, such get togethers can augur well for the society.”

hen it comes to the magnificence of worshipping Lord Ganesha, Mumbai tops the list of all the other cities. But Kerala, too, has a style of its own when carrying out the rituals associated with Ganesha Chaturthi. The people of Kerala actively rejoice in this festival. Falling in the month of Chingam, it is known as Vinayaka Chathurthi or Lamboodhara Piranalu. Devotees not only visit temples but also exhibit their artistic side through dance, music and skits, organised in every locality. People worship the idols of Ganesha and carry out the ritual of 'Abhishekam'. A belief runs wild among the people that, during the festival, if you break coconuts in the temples, you are freed of all your sins. This is a custom that is observed every year.

India-Japanese rapport

'CHAI PE CHARCHA'... Drinking tea the Japanese way? PM Modi seems to relishing it. Modi with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo.

IT is evident Prime Minister Narendra Modi is finding himself quite at home in Japan. He seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself. Before going to Japan, he had remarked; “I am highly excited”. Modi had dropped the Western nations and chose Japan as the first country for his visit must have been a matter of great satisfaction

for the Japanese. Western nations, particularly the United States must be quite distressed by the interest shown by Japanese hosts and the huge financial deal they have arrived at. They now know they have missed the bus by not providing a visa to him. That money matters for these nations is displayed by the fact that

they have forgotten about his 'sins' -- bloody communal riots in Gujarat – and now are very keen about getting him to visit their country in the near future. A country which is likely to be perturbed about the close IndoJapanese rapport is China. It is reported to be keeping a close watch on the happenings unfolding in Japan. Modi, who has repeatedly highlighted that he used be a tea seller early in his life, was treated to a special Japanese 'chai' by his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe as per the tradition in this country. The special gesture was Abe's way of showing affection to the visiting leader, keeping in touch with the Japanese tradition of 'Chanoyu' prevalent since the 16th century.Modi sat on the floor with knees bent as is the tradition in Japan and drank tea from a special cup. Abe sat next to him to share the moment. The two also had tea cakes along with the Japanese green tea. Abe then told Modi about tea made in 1950 during the visit of his grandfather Nobusuke Kishi to India as the Prime Minister. The traditional Japanese tea is powdered green and the utensils are called Wamono (Japanese things). The 'Chai pe Charcha' preceded the official substantive talks between Modi and Abe.

HER responsibilities as an actress, homemaker and politician have been keeping Hema Malini quite busy and she hardly has any time left for herself. The 65-year-old veteran actress, who is the BJP MP from Mathura, says she has been juggling work and her household duties. "There are different facets to my life and all are equally important. I continue to be an artiste, I have my duties as an MP, I have my house to run. I find I hardly have time for myself! "My early mornings are for exercise, yoga and pooja. The rest of the day is divided between various activities," Hema posted on Twitter. The Dream Girl of Bollywood has just returned from a work trip to Singapore where she performed at a show on Radha Ras Bihari.

Desi versions of ice-bucket challenge

WITH the ALS ice-bucket challenge going viral on social networking websites, Indian netizens have come up with their own version, posting videos as they donate rice to those in need. In line with the mantra of 'charity begins at home', this campaign titled 'Rice Bucket Challenge' is the brainchild of Manju Latha Kalanidhi, a Hyderabad-based journalist, who aims to save water and feed the hungry. The challenge involves donating rice to a needy person. "Cook or buy one bucket of rice or biryani and feed the poor in your locality. If you cannot take this challenge, donate medicines worth Rs 100 to the nearest government," Kalanidhi wrote on her Facebook page.

"Within 24 hours of posting this, I managed to begin charity at home...The recipient is Sathibabu, a daily labourer who sells idli dosas," says Kalanidhi. Since then, the campaign has gained popularity among Indian netizens, who are posting pictures and videos while donating rice to those in need and challenging their friends to do the same. The localised version 'Rice Bucket Challenge. Are you up for the desi challenge?' came up days after the original ALS ice bucket challenge had gone viral, as many users could not get used to the idea of wasting water and encouraging it.Subsequently, this led to the creation of the desi version of the challenge.

Shocking govt order for schools! GR compels all schools to make expensive arrangements to relay the PM's speech live on Teacher's Day, but not all schools can afford the same By Yatin Ingle

W

hile government schools across the city as well as the state have been suffering from lack of infrastructure, the education department has now actually given them a shock. The department has ordered all schools across the state to make arrangements for video-conferencing, television or radio, in preparation for the Prime Minister's speech and interaction with students on September 5, Teachers Day. With issues of power cut and unavalibility of computers and other equipments needed for airing the PM's speech, the schools are now in a fix as to how to make the required arrangements. Last Thursday, the state education department issued a Government Resolution (GR) stating that, on occasion of Teachers Day, the PM will be delivering a speech for the teachers as well as the students. Schools were ordered to make arrangements for videoconferencing, television sets or radios to cover the speech. The speech will begin at 3pm to 3.45 pm and teachers as well as the students have to be compulsorily present during the speech. Prashanth Redij, Chair-

man, School Principals Association, told the ADC: “The state government should provide better infrastructure and facilities to the students. It is difficult for schools from rural areas and those outside the city to arrange for the required equiptments as per the GR. The education department should rather make the arrangements for the students. Even the rent for the required equiptments is going to be expensive and many schools cannot afford the same.”. Most of the schools from the areas beyond Mumbai have also claimed that their schools suffer power-cut and it is very difficult for them to make arrangements for a generator to overcome the problem as stated in the GR. These issues have not been considered by the education department. The ADC spoke to Ashwini Bhide, state education secretary who said: “Schools have to make arrangements as per the GR given to them. MMRTA issues strange order

By Aroosa Ahmed

T

he Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has asked RTOs in the city to fine heavy vehicle transport holders with underage licences issued before July 1, 1989, and then regularise it, but, strangely, they have also directed the RTOs to straight away cancel the underage licences that have been issued after July 1, 1989. Heavy vehicle transport licences are issued at the age of 20, for buses, lorries, taxis and autorickshaws and underage licences are issued to those under 20 years of age. The RTOs will now fine drivers Rs 500 if their underage licences were issued before

July 1, 1989. To challenge the strange cancellation order by the MMRTA, the city's autorickshaw union will file a petition in the Bombay High Court next week. Thampi Kurian, general secretary of the Mumbai Rickshawmen's Union, said, “This is injustice done to license holders whose underage licences have been issued after July 1989. Hopefully we will be able to get justice for the people. Either all the underage licences should be regularised or they should all be cancelled.” K.T. Golani, secretary of the Mumbai Metropolitan Transport Authority (MMRTA), was unavailable for comment.

Vihar lake overflows By Khushboo Panjabi

T

he city and its catchment areas have been receiving good amounts of rainfall for the last few days leading to five lakes filling up to capacity. The city received 74mm of rainfall yesterday and Lake Vihar, which supplies potable water to the city, started overflowing around midnight on Sunday. “This is the fifth lake which has started overflowing, which is a good sign. Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna which supply the highest water to the city will soon start overflowing because the catchment areas are receiving good rainfall,” a civic official said. The Bhatasa lake sup-

plies 60 per cent of city's water. The water content in all the seven lakes together is 13,97,498 million litres which should last for 362 days without any water cuts. The weather bureau has predicted that intermittent rain could occur in city and suburbs, with chances of heavy showers in some places. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

iving a categorical warning to the BJP, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said that though he is humiliated for not being allowed to speak in the Prime Minister's presence, henceforth, the people of Maharashtra will not tolerate this insult. He also alleged that the Centre-state relations which was protected by the Congress are now in danger. Coming down heavily on the BJP-led central government, Chavan alleged that the NDA government is denying power from the central grids deliberately, which has created a power crisis in the state. While addressing party workers at Azad Maidan after launching the party's campaign, Chavan said, “If the

fected. The state will do everything possible to ensure that the people get electricity”. He went on, “The report card of first 100 days of the Modi government is gloomy. Except inaugurating projects, started and completed by the UPA, it has done nothing. The government has miserably failed to control prices. The stance adopted against Pakistan also shows the incompetency of the government. There are several instances of ceasefire violations from across the border, but those at the helm of affairs are quiet.” Pointing out one example, Chavan said, “I was shocked by an SMS received by state CM Prithviraj Chavan and other party leaders paying homage to the martyrs at Hutatma Chowk on Monday. However, speaking to media persons at the end of the inconclusive meeting of the party's state parliamentary board here yesterday, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis only confirmed that the seat sharing talks will be finalised next week. Sources disclosed that both the dominant alliance partners of the Mahayuti alliance are playing the waiting game over the seat sharing issue and hoping the other presses the panic button. The state BJP president stated that the party discussed the feedback of its observers who had toured all the 288 as-

BJP president Devendra Fadnavis sembly constituencies. Fadnavis disclosed the meeting discussed the future roadmap of election campaign strategy, seat sharing with other Mahayuti allies on how to use various media platforms like social media in election campaigning. Replying to queries he said that Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and other allies have been briefed about the deliberations. He however added that the BJP has not made any demands to the

Sena about seat sharing. Fadnavis, however, pointing to the new Mahayuti allies argued that the seat sharing agreement of 169 (Sena) and 119 (BJP) will have to be reworked as the new found allies have also to be accommodated. Replying to queries over disquiet in the party and allies over entry of leaders from other political parties, Fadnavis stated that the BJP will not admit leaders who are tainted or against whom the party in the past has launched agitations. In a related move, Swabhimani Sanghatna leader Sadabhau Khot met Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and is reported to have demanded 12 seats for his party. Later, speaking to newspersons Khot stated that the talks with the Sena leadership were satisfactory and that the seat sharing agreement will be finalised soon.

or the upcoming assembly elections candidates are wooing voters through the divine route. Voters of Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency got three such opportunities. Sitting MLA Abu Azmi took 125 people for a trip to Ajmer to the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Following this, probable candidate from Shiv Sena for that constituency Suresh Kirshnarao Patil alias Bullet Patil took 50 people to Ajmer. Congress leader and MHADA Chairman Advocate Yusuf Abrahani announced free tickets to Umrah (a pilgrimage to Mecca) for voters from the same constituency. During the trip the expense (food and stay) is also taken care of. According to resi-

dents of Govandi, this is a move to attract 90 per cent Sunni Muslim voters in the constituency. Denying such intentions, Abrahani said: “I have been organising trips to Ajmer Sharif since the last 10 years. This year locals demanded that sponsorship should be facilitated in Umrah. Two months back I circulated a contact number and people had to give missed calls on it. Around 2,800 people gave missed calls on the number out of which three people were selected on the basis of lottery system last Friday. Azmi, on the other hand, has an antiSunni sentiment against him because he is a Wahabi (another sect).” Suresh Patil, ex-policeman, who recently joined Shiv Sena has been an Independent

corporator from that region, took 51 people to Ajmer of August 26. He refused to comment on the issue when contacted. “We are praying that a Sena candidate should win from the Govandi seat. The colour for Chisti family and Sena is saffron. We will pray at the dargah for th party’s victory in the election,” said a Shiv Sena member. Azmi said that his plan for a trip was pending since last two years and division of a community in sects is criminal. “I will fight the upcoming elections on the basis of the work done by me in last five years. I have not appealed for votes from the people who were there with me during the trip. Voters should vote for me only if they think that I have done good work in the region,” said Azmi.

scheme was launched by the state government and it is benefiting the common man. We have no problem with the scheme being extended throughout the country, because it is Maharashtra's tradition that initiatives started in the state are extended nationwide. But the credit should go to the state and not the Modi government”. Former Union Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who is the manifesto committee chairman for the state Congress, said the Centre had reduced petrol prices but hiked the diesel prices. “This government does not work for the poor. I was Union Power Minister for six years and would co-ordinate the supply from surplus states to the ones needing it, irrespective of which party was in power.”

Who gets army’s aid – Sharif or Imran? T

HE scenario in Pakistan keeps changing. One thing is becomingclear: what is happening in the country has been well planned by the players and they are going ahead according to plan. There is no surprise development. Imran Khan and cleric Tahir-ul Qadri must have decided to go ahead to get rid of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. They have proceeded step by step and they have been giving several 24-hour ultimatums to Nawaz Sharif to resign. Their followers have broken laws and dared Sharif to take action against them. He kept quiet for days and began to act only two days ago. He has used force to stop the rebellion and the army too has given him support. Even as Imran Khan asked his supporters not to enter government buildings, the army made it clear it would not tolerate such anti-government violent moves. The army chief has in fact met Nawaz Sharif and held discussions with him. It is not clear whether the army supports Sharif or Imran Khan. The latest news is that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has intervened in the power struggle. There is only one thing that has become clear: the army which is not interested in seizing power, is playing a crucial role. The army will not allow any violence by Imran Khan's supporters, but it looks like it is also not prepared to go all out and extend assistance to Nawaz Sharif. What is surprising is, for the first time in Pakistan's history, the army is not interested in seizing the power.

T appears that the magic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is waning. His Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has met a reverse in the by-polls. Out of the 18 seats in Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Bihar, the BJP won only seven. The Parliamentary election held nearly four months ago saw the BJP sweeping and even getting a majority on its own in the Lok Sabha. The disenchantment of the voters in such a small period is indeed a point of deep analysis. True, the party made too many promises which were hard to implement. But that is only a part of the explanation. The full explanation is that no homework seems to have done on the capacity to deliver.

Futile exercise

Parliamentary board, which is the highest decision-making body. More than the victory by the Congress which wrested the Bahoriband assembly seat from the ruling party, it is the defeat of the BJP candidate which must be hurting it badly. After all, the Congress managed to retain just two out of 29 Lok Sabha seats in the state only recently. As for the Lalu-Nitish alliance in Bihar, the by-poll results must have come as a shot in the arm for the two veteran politicians. It was a well thought out political gamble the two took and it has paid rich dividends, after their parties had taken a real drubbing in the AprilMay Lok Sabha elections. Knowing full well the pattern of voting and caste arithmetic of Bihar politics, the two leaders apparently realized that they stood a chance only if they were to put up a collective fight.

Over the years, elections have become only a futile exercise of tall promises and very little implementation. Since the parties’ purpose is to win, the reality comes before the public long after it is all over. The voters’ flip from one party to another, expecting better performance than the last time. They also punish those who did not measure up to their standard. The Congress has been reduced to only 44 members in the Parliamentary elections, not even making the 55 seats required to claim the position of Leader of the Opposition Party. The results of the by-polls also show how the political parties, jaded as they are, losing sheen. The BJP, which swept the Lok Sabha polls, has quickly slipped down in position. The fault lies with the political parties which are not learning their lesson. The voters’ disillusionment is visible from election after election. It is obvious that the present dispensation does not sway the electorate. They are looking to prepare the ground for a setup which, in the long run, can counter the saffron power. The by-elections were seen as a litmus test for the BJP as well as the new combination of the Rashtriya Janata Dal of Lalu Prasad Yadav, the Janata Dal (United) of Nitish Kumar and the Congress. Indeed, the stakes were high for all the three parties in the secular alliance against the BJP which was riding on its massive success in

No doubt, it was a bold experiment which may well pave the way for a possible realignment of anti-BJP parties on a single platform in the run up to the next assembly elections in the state. Bahujan Samajwadi Party’s Mayawati has shunned such an offer from Mulayam Singh Yadav for the UP by-polls because she has not yet forgotten the ‘attempt’ by the Samajwadi Party to eliminate her. But in the time to come if she gains confidence, she could reconsider the offer. In any case, the by-poll results must have warmed the hearts of many anti-BJP leaders who will want to undergo such an experiment in the future. CPM leader Prakash Karat who claimed that unity among secular parties had paid off in the recent by-elections is willing to cooperate with the like-minded parties to fight the BJP. But his party and he have issues with the Congress. “Our party line is to fight the BJP primarily because it is in power now. But we are opposed to the policies of the Congress too,” he had said. Whatever the case, there is one lesson for all secular parties to learn. The voters are yearning for an alternative, away from the Congress as well as the BJP. They want secular and democratic governance which is what the Independence struggle has provided us.

the Lok Sabha polls. The results must have come as a real morale-booster for the combine, particularly for the grand old party Congress. On the other hand, the BJP must be feeling greatly disappointed for its performance which was below expectations. Though the party leadership put up a brave front, it will have to go back to the drawing board to arrest the trend sooner than later as the BJP has little time before the September by-elections in Uttar Pradesh for 11 seats.

UP by-elections BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar For BJP president Amit Shah, who has made wholesale changes to the party structure —it is a pity that old guards L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi have been omitted from the Parliamentary board — the UP bypoll results will be crucial. He has already said that he would want all the 11 seats in his basket, largely because the elections will be sort of a semi-final before the 2017 assembly elections in the state. Shah will have to work overtime to pick his candidates since the by-elections will be a triangular affair with the Congress and the Samajwadi Party having announced their candidates. Even otherwise, Shah’s credibility is at stake after he was pitch forked to the current position when he single-handedly helped the BJP win 71 out of 80 seats from the state in the Lok Sabha polls. The loss of a seat in the Madhya Pradesh by-polls particularly is an alarm bell for both Shah and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the state chief minister who has been inducted in the

Feel the soul’s appetite more... T

HE person who is not definite about his object has not yet begun his journey on the path of life. One should therefore first determine one's object for oneself however small that object is. Once it is determined one has begun life. We find with many people that somehow never happen to find their life's vocation. And what happens then is that in the end they consider their life a failure. All through their life they go from one thing to another, yet as they do not know their life's object they can accomplish so little. When people ask why they do not succeed, the answer is: because they have not yet found their object. As soon as a person has found his life's object, he begins to feel at home in this world, where before he had felt himself in a strange world. No sooner has a person found his way than he will prove to be fortunate, because all the things he wants to accomplish will come by themselves. Even if the whole world were against him, he will get such a power that he can hold on to his object against anything. He will get such a patience that when he is on the way to his object no misfortune will discour-

age him. There is no doubt that as long as he has not found it he will go from one thing to another, and again to another; and he will think that life is against him. Then he will begin to find fault with individuals, conditions, plans, the climate, with everything. Thus what is called fortunate or successful is really having the right object. When a person is wearing clothes which were not made for him, he says they are not okay, but when they

MATTER & SPIRIT are his clothes he feels comfortable in them. Everyone should therefore be given freedom to choose his object in life. And if he finds his object one knows that he is on the right path. Also when a person is on the path there are certain things to be considered. When a person has a knot to unravel, and he is given a knife to cut it, he has lost a great opportunity in his life. It is a small thing, but by not accomplishing it he has gone backward. This is a minor example, but in everything one does, if one has not that patience and confidence to go forward, then one loses a great deal.

However small the job a person has undertaken, if he completes it he has accomplished something great. It is not the work that a person has accomplished, it is the very fact of accomplishing which gives him power. As to what is the main object of every soul, that object may be called spiritual attainment. A person may go through his whole life without it, but there will come a time in his life when although he may not admit it he will begin to look for it. For spiritual attainment is not only acquired knowledge, it is the soul's appetite; and there will come a day in life when a person will feel the soul's appetite more than any other appetite. No doubt every soul has an unconscious yearning to satisfy this soul's appetite, but at the same time one's absorption in everyday life keeps one so occupied that one has no time to pay attention to it. The definition of spiritual attainment can be found in the study of human nature. For the nature of man is one and the same, be he spiritual or material. There are five things that man yearns for: life, power, knowledge, happiness, and peace, and the continual appetite which is felt in the deepest self yearns for one or other of these five things. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

Defence in doldrums THE recent visit of the Indian defence minister Arun Jaitley to the submarine manufacturing base , Mazagaon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai revealed an alarming situation as far as the status of submarine readiness is concerned. Apart from bureaucratic delays, the ground reality is equally pathetic regarding the delays which have occurred in the manufacturing facilities. Considering the volatile world situation, especially our untrustworthy neighbours – Pakistan and China – India needs to be doubly cautious to ensure that its battling fleet remain in shape, not only in quality, but also in quantity, in and underwater, as well as on the shores . United they will win THE two main constituents of the Mahayuti should remember that the wind is clearly blowing in their favour and is strongly indicating an anti-incumbency trend. If, in order to satisfy their respective parties' egos, the Shiv Sena and the BJP decide to part ways, they would face a total rout in the upcoming Assembly polls. Contesting the elections independently would only facilitate a record fourth successive term for the secular Congress-NCP combine. Even if the fringe parties quit the Hindutva alliance over the issue of their exorbitant seat demands, the two-party combination of the saffron force, fighting the polls as a single unit, can ensure them an absolute majority.

Politicising Ganeshotsav Despite HC order, Mira-Bhayandar plastered with illegal gates and banners! By Suresh Golani

W

ith State Assembly elections just round the corner, aspiring MLAs and their supporters – legislators – are leaving no stone unturned to churn maximum mileage in this year’s Ganeshotsav festival. In a last ditch effort to popularise themselves amongst the masses, before the imposition of the election code of conduct, netas from various parties have loosened their purse strings, providing liberal monetary support to the Ganeshotsav organisers. And as a result the twin-city is once again left defaced with illegal welcome gates, arches, hoardings and countless banners – most of them which have been illegally installed – without procuring valid permissions from the MiraBhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) and the local traffic department.

This is in stark violation and blatant contempt of the Bombay High Court orders to file criminal cases against such lawbreakers under the Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act. However, thanks to the lack of will and corruption prevailing in its advertising wing, the MBMC has chosen to remain mute spectators by giving a free hand to those guilty of defacing the twin-city’s skyline. As per official records, 16,005 Lord Ganesh idols had graced the twin-city last year out of which 746 idols were installed by local Sarvajanik mandals and the figures are expected to go up by another 15 to 20 per cent this year. Following standing judicial instructions, the MBMC in March, 2013, had launched a drive to remove illegal hoardings, banners and posters across the twin-city. However the drive fizzled out after a brief cosmetic action.

He had made calls and messages to our previous lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui. He is scared that if he will provide his phone for further investigation he might land into trouble. He has said that he doesn't have any cell phone with him. dent took place on December 1 and 7, 2013. The FIR for the same was registered on July 24, 2014. The accused DIG was granted anticipatory bail on August 12, 2014 by Special Judge Vrushali V. Joshi in the Sessions Court. Salunkhe, who is representing the victim, earlier filed an application for the cancellation of the anticipatory bail accusing Paraskar of bribing her to go slow on the case. The case will be next heard on September 11.

Several beauty treatments and cosmetic products offer instant results for your worst skincare nightmares. But, don’t jump the gun and overlook the damage that they can cause. Shirley Mistry & Yamini Walia tell you about the healthier, safer alternatives to some popular treatments

W

ith the lack of time in today’s day and age, instant treatments are tempting and often seem the best great option. However, if you are patient and opt for safer, natural alternatives, the results will leave you feeling healthier than you would after a cosmetic treatment. Read on to find out what healthier alternatives to pick.

>> Skip weight loss clinics and opt for detox wraps instead

MicroderMabrasion vs natural peels A chemical peel, or microdermabrasion, is the instant solution to all your skin problems. From dark spots, lines, pigmentation and dryness, to dullness and tanning, a chemical peel can take care of all your skin problems in a jiffy. The procedure involves a small, pen-like tool, which is used to peel back the top-most layer of your skin. Sounds harsh, doesn’t it?! These peels also use several toxic chemicals that peel back two to three layers of your skin. So, apart from using it for a fresher, cleaner complexion, people also pick chemical peels to minimise the appearance of fine lines and scars. Chemical peels create a mild wound when they exfoliate your skin, causing a fresh layer of skin to come to the surface, making your skin glow and appear healthy. However, the chemicals used as part of this procedure can be counterproductive and cause scarring, skin discolouration and damage induced by ultra violet rays. While chemical peels do offer instant results that claim to last longer, the results can be replicated at home with natural products, provided you have a little more time on hand. Simple home remedies are both effective, as well as extremely inexpensive compared to a chemical peel. Moreover, your skin stays protected and you will not suffer from the side-effects that chemicals can cause. Unless you are opting for a chemical peel to get rid of nasty scars, we recommend sticking to natural alternatives. our picks: Use lemon or lime juice, combined with a crushed disprin tablet (salicylic acid) and some yoghurt to make your own peel. This effectively removes scars and blemishes.

slimming or cellulite wraps. Slimming wraps use small strips of material that are wrapped tightly around your body, while only herbal remedies are used for cellulite wraps. Weight-loss wraps tighten and tone your skin, making you appear slimmer. But, the weight loss is temporary, as you’ll lose only water weight due to your body’s natural sweating process during the treatment. However, they are much healthier than weight loss clinics. our picks: Head to Aura Thai Spa in Bandra for a detox body wrap that will not only help you lose water weight, but also ease joint pain and stimulate blood circulation. Continued to pg 14 «

Weight loss clinics vs detox Wraps Most advertisements from weight-loss clinics urge you to join them in order to lose weight in a short span of time, usually just a few weeks. However, these clinical procedures have adverse side-effects. Several clinics use drugs that can be very harmful for your body. They may result in quick weight loss, but you should remember that quick weight loss implies not only a loss of fat, but also of muscle. So, weight loss clinics are definitely not a very healthy option when you want to lose weight. If you are looking for a healthier alternative, you can opt for

haIr transPlants vs olIve oIl If you are dealing with hair loss problems, hair transplant surgery might seem like a wise option. However, transplant surgery can have several dangerous side effects. The surgery can result in itching, swelling, numbness, scars and even bleeding. The procedure can also damage your existing hair by making it thin and lifeless. Instead of a transplant, use olive oil, which i s a natural way to boost hair growth. The moisturising properties of olive oil condition your scalp — an area that people tend to neglect. This improves the overall quality of your scalp. Hair loss is caused by a hormone that is responsible for the shrinkage of the hair follicle shaft. However, the production of that hormone, called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), is hampered when olive oil is applied to the s calp. our picks: To facilitate hair growth, mix approximately ½ cup olive oil with one egg yolk and a few drops of lemon juice in a small bowl. Leave this mixture on your scalp for 15 minutes and then wash it off. Your hair will be healthy and thick in just a few days.

>> Use hair oil to promote hair growth

cosmetIc surgery vs Beautytek Who doesn’t dream of perfect, glowing skin? But, cosmetic surgeries should not be your go-to solution to achieving it! For some people, cosmetic surgeries are a way to correct their flaws, while for others, they are a way to regain their regular appearance after an accident or a mishap. Regardless of the reasons, cosmetic surgeries have serious disadvantages. From medical complications such as nerve damage and scars, to the high costs, there are more negatives than positives when it comes to these procedures. Beautytek is a natural alternative to cosmetic surgery. It tones and lifts your body without you having to go under the knife. The non-invasive technique can reshape over nine different problem areas of your body. The new device also claims to be able to lift your breasts by up to 7cm, flatten your stomach, tone your buttocks and thighs and smooth out cellulite. The treatment is pain-free, has no side effects and can

>> Cosmetic surgery can cause adverse reactions, so opt for treatments such as Beautytek instead

transform your appearance in just 12 sessions. In fact, with just one or two top-up sessions every following year, the results are said to last a lifetime. The technique combines the ancient Chinese principles of acupressure — where certain points in your body stimulate energy flow — with modern technology. We are already rooting for

this natural procedure. our picks: The treatment has just been launched in the UK and is receiving tremendous response. One session of the treatment ranges between `2,000 and `15,000, which is quite reasonable as compared to cosmetic surgery. For more information log on to www.londonaesthetics.co.uk

Permanent makeuP vs mIcroart While permanent makeup feels like a breath of fresh air, it is as risky as any other medical procedure. It involves the use of needles, which can result in unsightly side-effects, including swelling and skin bumps. Also, once the makeup is permanently applied, you can only remove it if you go through another cosmetic procedure. In most cases, the removal results in scars, bleeding and bruising. It can also result in an unnaturally light skin tone. Micro-Art is a natural alternative to permanent makeup. It is a semi-permanent, mineral makeup procedure for the brows, lash line and lips. It is applied by a licensed micro-artist, and uses non-toxic mineral pigments. The procedure is completely natural, only takes about an hour and lasts up to three years. our picks: We’re waiting for the treatment to launch in India, but till it does, log on to www.microartmakeup.com to find out more

InjectIng skIn fIllers vs hyaluronIc acIds Forget about ageing gracefully, several people are flustered at the first sign of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin and crows feet, making cosmetic procedures such as injecting skin fillers a quick and easy way to hold on to your youth. Your skin develops wrinkles and sags when your body begins to lose collagen, which is a protein that maintains elasticity in your skin, but weakens as you age. Skin fillers are used to combat this. The procedure comprises of injecting substances such as collagen (procured from human or cow cells) or botox into the troublesome areas. This boosts the collagen content of your skin and makes your skin look taut and plump. In many cases, fat from the patient’s thighs or abdomen is also used. Sometimes, Polymethylmethacrylate beads, which are tiny round, smooth plastic particles, are also used to fill laugh lines and crows feet. Hyaluronic acid is also present in most collagen fillers, as it helps water molecules bond and makes your skin plump and supple. However, there is always a risk of your body rejecting these injections. You may react adversely to the filler and their long-term effects are unknown. However, immediate reactions such as drooping of another facial feature (due to the filler spreading inaccurately), flu, nausea, headaches and bruising are commonly reported. Also, when it is not performed correctly, this procedure can lead to infections, allergies and connective tissue disorders. Instead of opting for skin fillers that come bearing severals risks high price tags, we recommend that you simply increase your intake of foods that contain hyaluronic acid. Found in common, everyday foods, hyaluronic acid is a cheaper, more convenient option to collagen fillers. our picks: Meats, such as gizzards, liver, heart and kidney are the richest source of this acid, but you can also get your fill from fish oil, potatoes, radish, sweet potatoes and spices such as thyme.

sunscreens vs use of antIoxIdants

>> Antioxidant-rich foods work as natural sunscreen

Several articles and studies have explained how sunscreen can help prevent sun damage and skin cancer. However, study that was undertaken in 2006 by the University of California, spins this theory on its head. Free radicals in our body are essentially what cause cancer and prolonged exposure to sun rays also creates free radicals. The study suggested that certain ingredients found in sunscreens actually promote the generation of free radicals, which means that the application of sunscreen can cause the formation of more free radicals than no sunscreen at all. While the jury is divided on this theory, antioxidants can help. They stop cancer cells from growing and can lower your risk of skin cancer. Studies suggest that when consumed in adequate amounts, antioxidants move to the region just under the skin and form a protective barrier, just like sunscree n does. our picks: Virgin coconut oil, fermented cod liver oil, avocado, red bell peppers, yoghurt, spinach, eggs and rosemary are rich in antioxidants that fight free radicals.

>> Permanent eyelashes can cause eye infections and irritation. Use fake eyelashes instead

Permanent eyelashes vs fake eyelashes For a set of fuller, film-star-like lashes, permanent eyelashes may seem like the perfect solution. They last for 2-6 weeks and require no re-application or touch ups. However, they come at a price! Since each hair is being attached on your lash line using glue, it can easily get into your eye and cause irritation. In fact, this glue can cause serious infections and even blindness, if it isn’t tended immediately. Apart from this, repeatedly using permanent eyelashes can damage to your natural eyelashes, and cause them to shed, which is why we suggest occasionally using fake lashes, instead of investing in permanent lashes. You can apply them at home, while ensuring optimum levels of hygiene. You can also regularly dispose of fake lashes, minimising the risk of contracting an infection from trapped bacteria and dust particles. our picks: Ardell false lashes, `370 onwards

M

idnight munchies, a mid-morning slump or 4pm huger pangs — call it what you will, but there is no way to completely curb hunger pangs, no matter what time they affect you. It is easy to lose track of what you’re eating when a hunger pang catches you off-guard in the middle of a busy work day, or during a marathon study session. So, take a look at these healthy snacks, commit them to memory and say goodbye to oily chips and buttery biscuits.

rice crackers with Provolone cheese Let’s start with a delicious, gourmet-like snack to fight a rumbling tummy. Pick two baked rice crackers and top them with a slice or two of Provolone cheese for a delicious snack. You can also microwave them for 10-15 seconds to make the cheese melt slightly. Sprinkle some sea salt and pepper on them for extra flavour. calories: 210

hummus & Pita bread Not only is this a delicious appetiser, it is also a very healthy snack. Five mini pita pockets, along with 2-3 tbsp of hummus makes a healthy, nutritious snack. You can increase the quantity of hummus (if you want to eat fewer carbohydrates) by reducing the number of pita pockets. calories: 230

cheese & tomato Pizza Yes, if you eat it in moderation, it is okay to indulge in a pizza once in a while. Make your own tomato sauce and top it off with a thin layer of cheese. Two regular slices, or one big slice of pizza is a perfect snack, and it is still under 300 calories. calories: 288

>> Every time you feel like munching on something, choose from snacks which contain less than 300 calories

tomato, sPinach & goat’s cheese omelette If you are particularly hungry, make yourself an omelette with ½ a tomato, 2 eggs, 75g goat’s cheese and a handful of spinach. Not only is this extremely nutritious, this omelette is delicious, quick to prepare and will keep you full for several hours. calories: 250

lemon sorbet Cooling, sweet and tangy all at once, lemon sorbet is an excellent option for when your body is craving a sweet treat. It is healthier than ice cream because it is made from water, so a scoop will cool you off and satisfy your sweet tooth, without piling on the calories. calories: 124

bagel & cream cheese For times when you just can’t shake off the urge to indulge in carbohydrates, or a bread-based delight, this snack is extremely satisfying. Spread low-fat cream cheese on half a bagel and eat it along with 2-3 figs. Not only will your carbohydrate craving be completely satisfied, your body will also get a boost of energy from the figs. calories: 190

PoPcorn We love a crunchy, savoury snack! Popcorn has tons of fibre, so a small portion will help keep you full for long. It is also extremely healthy, provided you don’t pick options that include extra butter or double doses of cheese. A 75g portion is an ideal snack, and enough to tide you over to lunch during your mid-morning hunger pangs. calories: 240

tuna salad Mix together a can of tuna flakes and ¼ cup of hummus with salt, pepper, honey mustard and some celery for added crunch and flavour. Not only is this salad nutritious, packed with omega-3 acids, vitamins and minerals, it is also delicious. Spoon the salad into small lettuce cups for a healthy, attractive appetiser. calories: 230

Looking good is directly related to how you feel inside. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you how to improve your looks by getting a little healthier

2

keep tHe weIGHt down Before heading over for your next pedicure, make sure you think about how you feel. Are your ankles swollen and do you feel heavier? Are your shoes too tight? These are signs of sprains, injuries, strains or infections. Som arrest them immediately before looking for a cosmetic fix.

keep your bones HealtHy If your bones ache all the time, you’ve got to get them feeling good before you get rid of the wrinkles on your face. Confused? Wrinkles (especially when they affect you earlier than they should) are a sign of low bone density. The healthier your bones are, the less wrinkles you will be affected by.

5 Get tested Don’t head over to the salon to complain about excess hair growing around your face, chest, stomach or back. It’s not a sign of growing older. It could be a sign of menopause, but if you’re not close to menopausal age yet, visit your doctor to check if it is a condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome.

Do you know ALS?

We are sure you know about the ice bucket challenge, which has garnered attention worldwide. But, do you know enough about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) — the disease that this challenge is raising funds for? Yamini Walia suggests you take this quiz to find out ALS is contagious. a. True. b. False.

Excessive sweating, which is caused by a variety of reasons, can also help identify underlying health conditions. Dev Goswami recommends you take this quiz to find out why you’re suddenly sweating so much

E

veryone is always talking about how to arrest excessive sweating and mask the stench, or save your clothes from sweat marks. Use antiperspirant twice a day, wear underarm pads to protect your clothing, switch up your diet... there are several ways to solve the problem. ban bloats Wonder why you can’t fit into your favourite pair of jeans? Bloating is a good enough reason to go on a diet. In fact, a poor diet is one of the major reasons that this occurs. 1 Get even toned Dark and patchy skin cannot be permanently treated with a colour correcting cream or a face mask. ALS affects your sense of sight, hearing and/ or touch.

ALS can be treated and cured with medication. a. True. b. False.

mostly as You really don’t know what ALS is! Read up more about the disease before you consider taking the ice-bucket challenge. ALS is not contagious and is considered to be a heterogeneous disorder, as it doesn’t affect your sense of sight, hearing or touch. The rate of onset, progression and survival differ from patient to patient and there is no medical test to diagnose this condition. It is only identified by its symptoms that include muscle weakness, slurred speech and stiffness. Also, there is no standard cure for ALS, as treatments are designed to address individual symptoms and improve the quality of life for each patient. It usually takes more than a year to get a confirmed diagnosis. mostly bs Congratulations! You are quite wellversed with ALS. However, we recommend that instead of following the herd, you educate people about the disease and ask them to donate a considerable amount to this cause.

mostly as Hypothyroidism Based on your answers, it seems that your excessive sweating is linked to hypothyroidism — an under-active thyroid. We recommend you visit a doctor at the earliest, especially if you’ve answered ‘a’ to all questions, because from sudden weight loss and difficulty sleeping, to increased sensitivity to heat, your symptoms point to under-active thyroid. If left untreated, the condition can lead to goiter, heart problems as well as infertility. Do not take this lightly and seek medical care. mostly bs alcoholism It seems that excessive sweating is the least of your worries, because you seem to be suffering from alcoholism. The fact that you have been steadily losing weight and start trembling without reason, along with your inability to sleep unless you have a drink or two, suggests that you have a drinking problem. While you might brush this aside as nothing serious, remember that alcoholism can not only wreck havoc with your health, it can also ruin your personal and professional life by affecting your relationships. If you feel like you cannot control the situation yourself, we recommend you get a loved one to help you out and seek counselling.

not satIsfIed? If you find that the questions in the quiz don’t address your concerns or hold true for you, answer this question: Do you suffer from a bout of sweating after you take medication, especially blood pressure medicine, antibiotics, supplements and medication for dry mouth? If so, your condition is a reaction to the medication and you need to visit a doctor who can change the prescription or dosage. mostly cs diabetes We don’t want to scare you, but you need to remember that diabetes doesn’t display too many specific symptoms and is best diagnosed with a blood test. So, we recommend you get a check-up, because it seems that your body might not be making enough glucose. Excessive sweating is one of the non-specific symptoms of glucose control problems (they can include diabetes as well as hypoglycaemia — low glucose levels). Your other symptoms (feeling faint, fluctuating weight, blurred vision) too point to diabetes. mostly ds stress You might not know it, but chronic stress can

often lead to excessive sweating — especially on your feet and hands. It is important to understand the difference between chronic stress and everyday stress. The later is an easy to manage situation, while the former is much more serious and you might even need medical attention to treat or manage your problem. Before you visit a doctor, we recommend you trying to lower your stress levels (by practising meditation and taking a vacation, if need be) to see if that helps. mostly es Hyperhidrosis You most likely suffer form hyperhidrosis — which is basically excessive sweating. Don’t be confused; while excessive sweating can often point to other serious conditions, sometimes it is just what it appears to be. While the fact you probably don’t suffer from the deadly conditions mentioned above will be good news to you, the bad news is this is a relatively harder condition to manage and treat. You need to a visit a doctor who will probably recommend a course of medication or, in extreme cases, underarm surgery. Botox has also been known to help treat excessive sweating, and as far as managing this condition on a daily basis is concerned, antiperspirants are your best bet.

Teenagers follow bad posture habits in this day and age and it’s leading to aggravated back problems and several injuries at a very young age. Rhea Dhanbhoora helps you get your teens to straighten out

F

orget working professionals and senior citizens — nowa-days, a worrying number of teenagers suffer from back pain, usually caused due to bad posture and a lifestyle where they spend several hours a day bent over their computers or hunched over video game consoles. Correcting their posture is an easy way to avoid back pain now and prevent serious back problems in the future. Dr. Anjana Laungani, consultant physiotherapist and rehab specialist from Physio Rehab, explains, “Back pain is one of the most common complaints in teenagers. Most experience a bout of back pain at some point in their teenage years and for some, back pain can be a continual source of aggravation and discomfort in their adult life as well. 70% of the cases of back pain can be traced to poor posture or faulty body alignment. On the other hand, 30% cases are due to physical trauma, congenital defects and pathological causes.”

>> The way your teenagers sit while playing video games can damage their spine and lead to back pain

GettinG it RiGht Dr. Anjana tells us that your posture is defined as the way you hold yourself. “Good posture ensures that all of your bones and joints are aligned properly, your muscles are working in balance and no excessive strain is put on your skeletal system. Teenagers often spend long hours sitting in front of the television or behind a desk in front of computers and video games. This, in turn, contributes to an increase in the occurrence of back pain amongst the younger generation. Poor posture is often associated with a sedentary lifestyle, as people tend to slouch or slump whilst sitting for prolonged time periods of time, which leads to back pain.” Dr. Anjana helps us with five tips that will help improve your teenager’s posture. Read on to see how you can get your teenager to sit up and take notice.

Get them a GooD ChaiR Most children spend hours on end in a single position. Whether it’s to watch television, play a game, sit at the computer or even study for long durations, sitting in one position for really long is bad enough — and when they do it in a chair that does not provide adequate and appropriate support, it’s even worse. So, get them a chair that has a comfortable back rest; it should also support the area under the thighs and should not lean on any one side. The chair should also allow them to rest their feet comfortably on the floor. To help them sit in a better position, make sure that their arms are not constantly resting on the table as this puts undue pressure on the nerves in their elbows. Get them an armrest if they type and browse the internet a lot.

Getting a good backpack is a better investment than saving money on one and having to pay for back therapy in the future. Bad bags usually put too much strain on students’ shoulders. The straps should be tight and the weight in the bag should be evenly distributed.

Cut out television time It’s hard to discipline teenagers, but you have to do so in order to ensure that they’re staying healthy. If they must watch television or play a game — limit the number of hours that they can do so in a week. If they have to study for long periods of time, encourage them to walk around while they read instead of staying glued to one spot.

BaG it up Don’t skimp on their school/ college bags.

help them Get aCtive Why is it that teenagers these days have back aches far more frequently than when you were

young? The answer is pretty simple — they’ve gotten too sedentary! The human spine needs constant activity in order to stay in good shape and sitting all day long weakens it. This means that as time goes by, it will get harder for the spine to support the weight of their body. Whatever age they are at, exercise is a great idea. Simple spine twists and push ups are all they need and it will be enough for them to strengthen their muscles and reduce the risk of injury.

staRt eaRly If your children are just entering their teenage years, you shouldn’t waste any time inculcating healthy posture habits. For the rest, it’s never too late — so don’t give up! Set a good example by sitting up straight yourself and teaching your children to hold themselves well, even when they walk. Back problems don’t go away easily, so even if your children are in their mid-twenties, tell them to stand taller, sit straighter and maintain good posture to avoid aches and pains in their neck, shoulders and hips along with headaches, fatigue and weakened muscles. A good way to encourage them to stand taller is to remind them how much shorter they look when they’re slouched over. Good posture is important for your health, but it also helps you seem more mature and reflects self-confidence and positive self-esteem — all good incentives for teenagers!

Depression

& dementia

Here’s another reason not to take depression and anxiety lightly — a new study has linked depression with the risk of suffering from dementia. Dev Goswami finds out more about the connection and its implications

I

t is believed that finding out that you suffer from a form of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s, can lead to the onset of stress, anxiety and depression. However, a new study has found that the opposite holds true as well, as suffering from mental distress and depression can increase your risk of developing dementia. The study is among several that have been or are currently being undertaken to decipher the chicken and egg situation of mental disorders: Does dementia lead to depression, or does depression cause dementia? The study, which was published in June, this year, in the journal Neurology, involved around 1,700 persons with a mean age of 77 years. In the report, the researchers mentioned that at the start of the study, none of the subjects had any problems visa-vis their ability to think or their memory retaining capacity. The researchers then screened the subjects every year for signs of depression and also tested their cognitive abilities and memory skills. The study, which lasted for around eight years, found high

levels of depression among people who were later diagnosed with dementia. However, surprisingly, the study also showed that the onset of dementia did not correspond to an increase in depression, which was believed to be the case until now. In fact, the researchers found that people who developed dementia, were actually less depressed. While the study could certainly help pave way to better diagnose and treat various forms of dementia, researchers urged caution as they couldn’t find a link between depression and dementia-related brain damage. This means that the loss of memory — which naturally occurs with advancing age — is not a situation that can be prevented by treating depression. But, recognising that depression can lead to the various forms of dementia may help to manage the condition mor effectively. Researchers said that this is something that should be the focus of future studies. Finding out exactly how depression increases the risk of suffering from dementia can, in the future, help formulate preventive steps and actions.

lzheimer’s disease is essentially a loss of neurons in the patient’s brain, which can lead to a progressive loss of memory and the inability to communicate, understand things or perform tasks. Not only is it traumatising for the patient, it also takes a toll on the patient’s family. With no definite cure, the lifespan of someone who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s ranges between a mere 4-6 years. However, a recent study, conducted by MIT’s Howard Hughes Medical Institute and published in the journal Nature, show that a cure is possible. The study is based on p25, which is a protein that is directly related to degeneration of neurological abilities in human beings. For the purpose of this study, mice were treated in such a manner that their p25 gene could be switched on or off, at will. Before turning the gene on, which would lead to Alzheimer-like effects, the mice were trained to associate a special chamber with an electric shock and were also taught how to navigate through a maze to escape the chamber. Once they were trained, researchers turned on the p25 gene and induced Alzheimer’s. In six weeks (which is the equivalent of long-term memory for mice), the mice no longer remembered how to associate the chamber with an

besity has always been linked to a risk of cardiac diseases, strokes, cancer and even asthma. Deadly as it sounds, obesity has now been found to have a link with dementia as well. A study that focussed on obese patients under the age of 70, revealed that those who were admitted to a hospital for obesity, have a higher chance of suffering from dementia than those who aren’t medically obese. The study found that the risk of developing dementia was much higher amongst younger people, than their older counterparts, especially at the first recorded sign of obesity. Published in the Postgraduate Medical Journal, researchers examined the data gathered from 451,232 persons who either suffered from obesity or were a part of a control group. Researches concluded that people in their 40s suffered from a 70% risk of dementia owing to obesity, whereas people in their 50s suffered from a 50% risk. As the patients get older, their risk decreased correspondingly, with people between the ages of 60 to 69, suffering

from a 40% risk. Once past their 70s, the risk of obese patients developing dementia dropped to as low as 22%. The risk of obese people developing dementia is believed to be highest when they are between 30 to 40-years-old and lifestyle changes are recommended to eliminate this mental disorder. This is fairly

electric shock or how to make their way out of the maze. A second part of this study included half of the mice with long-term memory loss being relegated to a stimulating environment, filled with toys, wheels and other mice. It is known that mice learn better in a stimulating environment and this step found that the mice in the stimulated environment coped much better with their condition and even learnt new things, as opposed to the other half. A third phase of the study saw mice who experienced neurodegeneration, being treated with an HDAC inhibitor, which is commonly used to treat cancer. The researchers found that the mice that were treated with this drug performed better when it came to memory dependant tasks. Although the results of the study point to a cure for Alzheimer’s, the study is still in its nascent stages. Only once the effects of this study are duplicated in humans, can we be assured of a possible cure to this degenerative disease.

metal misery

If your ear itches when you wear a pair of earrings and you need to avoid wearing necklaces to save your skin from unsightly rashes, you might be suffering from a metal allergy. Yamini Walia tells you more about adverse skin reactions to different metals

M >> Maintain a balanced diet to prevent brittle nails Dear Barbara, I have a nail problem that is hurting me financially. A week or so after I get a manicure and pedicure, my nails start to chip and break at the edges. This means that I have to get several manicures/ pedicures in a month, which is working out quite expensive. My manicurist says that nothing can be done — though I suspect that’s an easy way to make money! Is there anything I can do? I don’t want to spend so much on my nails! — sana Batliwala, Colaba Dear sana, You probably suffer from brittle nails, which are usually caused due to a vitamin deficiency or an unhealthy diet. Look out for the other symptoms of vitamin deficiencies and start eating healthy. If nothing helps, you should visit a dermatologist, who will be able to help diagnose the actual problem and suggest a treatment accordingly. In the meantime, to avoid too many salon treatments, simply file your nails to remove the affected part and apply a coat of nail polish — this will help your nails look decent for a week or two and save you the money you spend on expensive nail treatments. Dear Barbara, I have recently noticed several tiny red bumps on the back of my arm. They are uncomfortable when I wear tight T-shirts and look unsightly, so I can’t wear sleeveless tops. I thought it was an allergic reaction, but it’s been a few weeks and they don’t look like they are going anywhere. What can I do? — shaheen Qureshi, Colaba Dear shaheen, While this could be an allergic reaction, it is more likely a case of keratosis pilaris, which is a common skin condition and is harmless, so don’t worry about it. To treat the problem, exfoliate the area (but ensure that you aren’t applying too much force) and moisturise it daily. Make sure that you keep the area clean, because bacteria that gets trapped in your hair follicles usually causes this condition. Also avoid wearing sweaty clothes for too long.

etal related skin allergies fall under allergic contact dermatitis. This means that whenever your skin touches a metal, your immune system overreacts. There are several types of metal allergies, but the most common one is an allergy to nickel. Nickel is used to create a whole slew of common items including buttons, buckles, zips and kitchen utensils. So, it can be a tough condition to manage. Read on to find out more about how it’s caused and what you can do about it.

rashes A nickel allergy can cause a rash all over your body. You can suffer from a reaction due to orthodontic braces, tongue piercings, nickel leaching into food from

old pots and pans and even the consumption of foods such as green vegetables and seafood, which contain high amounts of nickel. These rashes are often aggravated by sweat, so, always ensure your skin is dry where the metal is going to contact you.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2014

reDness Have you ever suffered from redness or a change in the colour of your skin when you wear jewellery? If so, it’s probably because you are allergic to metals such as gold, silver and copper. There are several creams, such as HealthAid Aloe Vera Cream for `509, which create a barrier between your jewellery and your skin, and prevent allergic reactions. The best part is that these creams won’t damage your precious jewellery.

Dry patChes Sometimes, a metal allergy can take the form of dry patches that resemble a burn. This causes irritation and also looks unsightly. Wear a thick layer of protective moisturising cream. The thicker the barrier between you and the metal, the less bothersome the reactions will be.

Blisters Metal allergies can also cause blisters, but this happens only in extreme cases. If you reach this stage, you need to refrain from wearing any jewellery that contains even a small amount of nickel. However, if you can’t avoid wearing jewellery, consider electroplating it. Take your ring or earrings to a jeweller and check whether a layer of metal that you are not allergic to can be applied to the surface. This prevents nickel particles from coming in contact with your skin, at least for a while.

itChing We aren’t talking about normal itching but severe itching which can be extremely uncomfortable. We suggest you use soothing lotions such as calamine lotion to ease itching. However, if the itching worsens, contact your dermatologist for prescription creams and medicines.

>> Your ears can turn red when you wear earrings if you are prone to metal allergies

OKYO: India and Japan on Monday agreed to enhance their defence and strategic cooperation to a new level during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Shinzo Abe, who also decided to speed up negotiations on civil nuclear deal that could not be concluded now. Striking good personal chemistry, the two leaders had "very fruitful" and "meaningful" exchanges after which Abe announced doubling of Japan's private and public investment in India to about US $35 billion over the next five years. The talks at Akasaka Palace (State Guest House) came on the third day of Modi's first major bilateral visit outside South Asia. Abe had gone the extra mile in receiving his old friend in Kyoto on Saturday and spent the weekend with him on a tour of two ancient Buddhist temples apart from hosting a banquet. Significantly, at an interaction with business leaders, Modi deplored the "expansionist" tendencies among countries which "engage in encroachment" and "intrude" into the seas of others, comments seen as a reference to China. At the summit talks, the two countries decided to elevate their ties to a Special Strategic Global Partnership, emphasising that a developed India and a prosperous Japan was important for Asia and for global peace and security.

EW DELHI: CBI's move to close the coal blocks allocation scam case against Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Ltd and its directors on Monday came under the scanner of a special court, which observed that the agency's closure report was "devoid of any reasoning or logical step". Special CBI Judge Bharat Parashar said CBI's closure report lacked any logical step through which it had come to the conclusion that there was no "element of criminality" in the acts of "omission or commission" allegedly committed by Coal Ministry officials. "...Without going into any further length of the matter at this stage, I may state that from a bare perusal of closure report, it is broadly clear that it is devoid of any reasoning or logical step through which the investigating agency came to this conclusion of there being no element of criminality in the impugned acts of omission or commission committed by the officers/officials of the Coal Ministry," the judge said. The observation came when the court sought clarifications from the investigating officer (IO) about the closure report. As the IO was unable to answer properly on court's query, the judge posted the matter for further arguments on September 9 saying it

would be appropriate to hear special public prosecutor (SPP) R S Cheema on the issue. Cheema was not present in the courtroom during the hearing. "However, as the SPP is not available today so at this stage, I am refraining myself from making any further observations as it will be appropriate to hear him first," the judge said. CBI, in March this year, had filed a closure report in the FIR in which Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Ltd, its directors, Pavan Ahluwalia, Kamaljeet Ahluwalia, Prashant Ahluwalia, its senior official Amit Goyal and some unknown public servants were arrayed as accused. They were named as accused in the FIR for allegedly misrepresenting facts, including inflated net worth, to acquire coal blocks. However, after the probe, CBI had filed a closure report saying they have not found sufficient evidence against the firm and its directors to proceed with the case. During the hearing, the court told the IO that on the next date of hearing it will hear arguments "especially as regard to the legally admissible reasoning or logic through the process of which the investigating agency came to the conclusions as find mention in the closure report".

Sathe made a generous donation to the centre in memory of Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, the two Vishnus who revolutionised music education in the 20th century. The centre organises a big concert out of the funds generated through this donation. This month it was a concert in which Dr Aneesh Pradhan gave a solo tabla recital and Shubha Mudgal gave a vocal recital.

Shubha Mudgal Aneesh is a front ranking tabla player in the country. He has a serious approach to his art and he is extremely disciplined as an artiste. He

played the '16 bear teen taal'. Elements of the Farukhabad, Ajrada and Lucknow gharana were audible in his performance. His tabla playing was not a mere show of strength and power. With a number of pregnant pauses, he brought in an element of subtlety and artistry. His recitation of tabla phrases and syllables evoked admiration. Suhir Nayak on the harmonium lent superb support. Shubha Mudgal who is a topnotch singer of our times began with the raga 'Shree'. 'Sanz Bhayee', the bada khyal proceeded at a languorous pace. The serene mood of the raga was nicely projected by the singer. She

also sang two compositions in 'Gaud Malhar' which reflected the mood of the season. Her Benarasi thumri 'Maharaja Kiwadiya Kholo Raski Boond Padi' was sung with emotion. Legend has it that a thumri singer in Benaras composed this song early in the last century. He was away the whole night at music soirees and he returned home early in the morning. The wife was fast asleep as it started raining, which inspired the singer to compose this song. Shubha's rendering was full of sensitivity. Aneesh Pradhan who supported her on the tabla played delightful laggi patterns.

he National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) presented a unique dance drama 'Moksha Katha' by renowned danseuse Shantha Rathi at the NCPA Experimental Theatre. Besides the exposition of three distinct classical dance styles, it was amazing to watch the dual characters of the demoness and the beautiful maiden come alive on the same stage. Singapore-based Shantha Rathi has learnt bharatanatyam, kuchipudi and kathakali from the great masters and has cleverly used all three styles to portray the story of Poothana, demoness and sister of wicked king Kamsa. Unlike most presentations where the death of the demoness is portrayed, Shantha goes a step further to interpret the liberation of the soul, hence Poothana is blessed. The performance starts with a prelude of Poothana who is destined to kill the little infant Krishna. Poothana enters the palace as a beautiful maiden in order to kill Krishna but after seeing the divine and beautiful Krishna, she forgets her

veryone is curious about the going ons in the film industry and the glamour world. But very few know about the grime in tinsel town. Now producer-writer Neeta Suresh Devkar’s new film, ‘Natee’, takes a close look at the Marathi film industry, with her daughter Teja Devkar playing the lead role of a Kolhapur-based lightman’s daughter, Sulakshana. duty. But she suddenly realises that she's been assigned the task of killing Krishna. Poothana is in a dilemma between 'dharma' and 'karma'. Poothana applies poison on her breasts and feeds the little infant. But little Krishna drinks the life force of the demoness as she goes through intense pain and suffering. Before she dies, she has a vision of the lord, hence her soul is liberated. Shantha's elevating 'abhinaya' kept the audience spellbound. The transformation of the demoness to the beautiful maiden was impressive, creating a lasting impression on the audience. Besides the traditional compositions in Bharatanatyam, kuchipudi and kathakali, it was surprising to witness the 'bindadin' composition 'Dagar Chalat, Dekho Shyam Kare Deyya', where Krishna is being punished and attired like a woman. This number was refreshing as it is normally not included in any south Indian dance styles. Shantha also referred to the glory of the Krishna as the protector of all mankind with emphasis on the role of Arjuna in the Kurukshetra battle against 'adharma'.

Truth about Marathi films revealed in ‘Natee’ to make a career in films. Neeta Devkar says, “It is my viewpoint of the current industry. As everyone knows about the Hindi film industry, this take on the Marathi industry will shock the audiences.” When quizzed about chosing her daughter to play Sulkshana, she says, “When I make a film, it is but natural that I will cast my daughter. And she has done an excellent job. The film is made on

a big budget with stars like Ajinkya Dev, Subodh Bhave. The director, Yogesh Jadhav, along with the experienced director of photography Suresh Deshmane have made a fine film.” The film releases on September 19. When asked about the multitude of films releasing in September, she clarifies, “We can’t stop a clash with other films in any week but we are sure about our project doing well.”

SRINI SHUNTED OUT AGAIN

EW DELHI: The Supreme Court rejected N Srinivasan's plea for reinstatement as BCCI President saying he cannot be allowed to take up the charge till he gets a clean chit from Justice Mudgal Committee which is probing him and 12 players in IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal. Expressing displeasure over slow speed of probe, the apex court asked the panel to complete it's in-

N

time for completion of probe does not seem realistic. The way in which it is going on, it will take five years. It's going to be a tough task for the Committee," the bench said, asking it to expedite the probe. The court posted the case for further hearing on November two but allowed the committee to file interim report on any individuals if it wishes. Justice Mudgal committee, which

Srinivasan can’t take charge of BCCI till cleared by Mudgal Comm:SC

vestigation within two months and also allowed it to file interim report against Srinivasan or any other office bearer who are under its scrutiny. A bench of justices T S Thakur and F M Ibrahim Kalifulla turned down Srinivasan's plea that he should be allowed to discharge his function as the AGM is expected to take place at the end of this month and his signature is needed for clearing the annual account of the board. "Signing account book is not a ground. This cannot be a ground for reinstatement," the bench said. At the outset of proceedings, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Srinivasan, pleaded the court to reveal whether there was anything against him in Justice Mudgal's interim report so that he be allowed to take up the charge of BCCI if there is nothing against him. The bench said that no comments have been made against Srinivasan in the report but the probe is still going on and he cannot be allowed to function as BCCI President. It said that the committee sought more time as it wants to record the statements of some players who are on England tour and also voice samples of some people need to be matched. "We saw the report. Two months

is conducting probe against Srinivasan and 12 prominent players in the scandal, had on August 29 filed its interim report in a sealed cover before the Supreme Court. The apex court had on May 16 given the task to conduct probe against 69-year-old Srinivasan and 12 players to Justice Mudgal panel and asked it to file its report by end of August. It had rejected BCCI's proposal to conduct the probe through its own panel. The Mudgal committee had earlier investigated the scandal and submitted in a sealed envelope its initial report in which names of Srinivasan and 12 cricketers were mentioned. "We are of the considered opinion that the allegations against the 13 persons including N Srinivasan mentioned in the report submitted in the sealed cover should be investigated into by the Justice Mudgal Committee and the team of investigators because if a new Probe Committee is entrusted to inquire into the allegations, there is likelihood of the allegations being leaked to the public and such leakage will damage the reputation of the 13 persons beyond repair," the bench had said. Besides Justice Mudgal, the panel has Additional Solicitor Gen-

eral L Nageshwar Rao and advocate Nilay Dutta as members. A group of investigators headed by senior IPS officer B B Mishra has assisted the Mudgal Committee which was given the power to probe, search and seize relevant documents and record evidence.

HAPPY THAT SC HAS NOT REINSTATED SRINI: VERMA The petitioner in the IPL spot-fixing case and the face of the anti N Srinivasan camp Aditya Verma expressed his happiness after Supreme Court decided not to reinstate the Tamil Nadu strongman in BCCI chief's post till Mudgal committee submits its final report. "The BCCI plea had only one motive – to get Srinivasan back into the board by hook or crook and make him eligible for the post of President another three-year term in the next AGM later this month. What is going on in the BCCI is highly undemocratic," Verma was quoted as saying in a press release. "The BCCI has one-point programme – to look after the interest of one man and not the game. I am happy that the Honourable Court has not reinstated Srinivasan. The BCCI might try it again but we are going to oppose it," Verma added.

We can still save the series: Moores India become number one

B

IRMINGHAM: Trailing the fivematch series 0-2 after three outings, England coach Peter Moores still believes that his side can still draw level when they take on India in the fourth ODI, here today. "We have had two disappointing games and we haven't played well enough in both games, and we know that," said Moores. "So it's a chance again to come back and play better. In two or three different areas of the game we haven't really played as well as we wanted to." The hosts struggled against spin at Nottingham where the Indian slow bowlers strangled them with six wickets. Even in Cardiff, the Indian medium pacers had made initial breakthroughs. This happened despite England's new opening combination of Alastair Cook and Alex Hales giving them two 50-plus stands in successive matches. "The middle overs and playing spin are the areas where we want to improve. The key for the lads is to identify the areas where they want to get better and how they are going to go about it and then work very hard to get there," said the coach.

"We've got some good players of spin, in that side the players like Ian Bell, Alastair Cook and Eoin Morgan, who are good players of spin. But we have to deliver in a one-day game and that, to me, is partly about skill and partly a mindset, which is something that obviously goes with the territory of the job of

being a one-day international player," he added. These two losses have thrown England's 2015 World Cup preparations off-track. It has become particularly tough for the hosts since ex-cricketers have been very vocal in their opinion of not having Cook as the ODI captain and indeed replacing him with someone else for the quadrennial event in AustraliaNew Zealand. "I don't mind people having a view. It's probably healthy people have got a view on what they think is right and wrong. The key for the players is they've got a chance to make a difference, because they're in there and they're doing it. We have to get the right score and there are different ways of getting it. "We know in that squad you've got some people who can score at a very high rate – Hales at the top, people like Morgan and Buttler. You also see Root, who's growing as a player - we've seen him in Twenty20 score rapidly. All those players are clear in what they've got to do. But to get to that point, you've got to get in, still build an innings - we see that in all forms of the game," said Moores.

in ICC ODI rankings D

UBAI: Their dominating performance against England coupled with Australia's shock loss to Zimbabwe made India the number one team in the latest ICC ODI rankings issued here. "World champion India have been confirmed as the numberone ranked side in the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings following Zimbabwe's three wickets victory over Australia in a triangular series match in Harare on Sunday," the ICC said in a statement. India had joined Australia on top of the table after winning the third ODI in Nottingham at 114 ratings points, but took sole possession at the coveted numberone spot after Zimbabwe recorded their first victory over Australia in 31 years. This result meant Australia have dropped three ratings points and slipped behind South Africa and Sri Lanka into fourth position on 111 ratings points. South Africa, following victories over Australia and Zimbabwe, are

sitting in second spot on 113 ratings points, while Sri Lanka also have 111 ratings points but are ranked above Australia in third position by a fraction of a point. With five ODIs to be played this week, there is potential for further changes at the top of the table, depending how these matches pan out. For world champion India to finish as the number-one ranked side, they need to win the remaining two matches against England and then hope Australia beat South Africa either on September 2 or 6 (if both the sides clash in the final). In this scenario, India will be on 115 ratings points, followed by South Africa, Australia and Sri Lanka (depending on the outcome of the remaining matches in the triangular series). South Africa, who also lead the ICC Test Team Championship, can move to the top of the table if they win their remaining two league matches as well as the potential final against Australia.

‘I have tried to sort out my action for better results’ By Chetan Narula

IRMINGHAM: Ravichandran Ashwin's performance in the shorter versions has been comparatively better than Test cricket which the burly Tamil Nadu spinner attributes to the time spent at the nets with his personal coach sorting out his bowling action. "I have put considerable amount of work into it, a good 55-60 days of work back at home with my coach. I have been trying to sort out my action and extract as much as possible from the wicket. Thankfully the results are coming," Ashwin told reporters on the eve of the fourth one-dayer here today. The 'four-fielder outside the 30yard circle' rule has something that has been troubling the Indian spinners and Ashwin feels that he is working around the restrictions chalking out his own plan.

"The fifth fielder (earlier rule) actually determined the length of a spinner. Now as per new rules, depending on which fielder, you have up (inside the circle), you have to bowl fuller, pull up your length, have to play in between that and try taking risks in between that," Ashwin signed off. Having received man-of-thematch award in the previous game, Ashwin was all praise for the fielding unit, which has been bolstered by the presence of Suresh Raina. "We had six or seven new players coming in for the ODIs and that has obviously helped lift the team.” "This sort of thing happens (referring to dropped catches during Tests), when you have had a bad series, which was how the Tests ended for us. Now you have fresh legs coming in. It brings a bit of fresh attitude into the squad," he went on to say.

EW YORK: Maria Sharapova's 10th US Open ended in defeat to fellow former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, leaving the women's draw with just two of its top eight seeds. Also exiting on an afternoon of high humidity, which eventually descended into an early evening of lightning and torrential rain, was Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer, the highest-ranked casualty in the men's event. Five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova -- the 2006 title winner in New York -- was defeated by Danish 10th seed Wozniacki with the 2009 runner-up claiming a deserved 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 triumph on a steamy Arthur Ashe Stadium court to reach the quarter-finals yesterday. Sharapova, looking to add this year's US Open title to her French Open win in June, was undone by 43 unforced errors and eight double faults. The hot and humid conditions were so punishing that the players were granted a heat break in the locker room before the third set, and when they returned to the court Wozniacki wasted little time, breaking Sharapova to love in the fourth game for a 3-1 lead. She broke the Russian superstar again in the final game to seal the victory and a chance to play 13th-

ADRID: Real Sociedad produced a stunning fightback from 2-0 down to beat European champions Real Madrid 4-2. Meanwhile, bitter rivals Barcelona made it two wins in as many games under Luis Enrique with a late winner at Villarreal yesterday. Madrid were without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo and departed Angel di Maria and Xabi Alonso, but still looked on course for a comfortable evening when they flew into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 11 minutes thanks to goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale. However, Inigo Martinez and David Zurutuza levelled for the hosts before the break and Zurutuza and Carlos Vela sealed a muchneeded win for under-fire Sociedad boss Jagoba Arrasate. Sociedad had lost their opening game at newly-promoted Eibar and been dumped out of the Europa League by Russian side FK Krasnodar in midweek and appeared down on their luck after another slow start. Ramos rose highest to power home Toni Kroos' corner to open the scoring before Bale left Gorka Elustondo trailing with a neat nutmeg and slotted into the bottom corner. Enaut Zubikarai then had to make fine saves to prevent Marcelo and Kroos putting Madrid out of sight. But it was the hosts who crucially

Zurutuza then levelled four minutes before the break as he powered home Alberto de la Bella's pinpoint cross from the left.

HUMILIATION Iker Casillas produced a fine save to turn Imanol Agirretxe's header behind as Sociedad started the second period the stronger. And they got their reward 25 minutes from time when Zuruztuza again timed his run into the box perfectly to connect with Prieto's low cross to the near post. Madrid's humiliation was com-

plete 10 minutes later when substitute Carlos Vela appeared to control the ball with his hand before spinning to fire into the top corner. It was a happier evening for Barca as they were 1-0 victors at Villarreal thanks to 19year-old Sandro Ramirez's debut goal eight minutes from time. "It is gratifying to see the young guys score, but the most important thing is the victory," said Enrique. "We kept going until the end. Villarreal defended very well and waited for the counter-attack to cause us problems. "In the end we resolved things well and it reinforces what we have already seen in training."

Inzhagi opens with Milan win, Vidic sent-off for Inter

ROME: Filippo Inzaghi got his tenure as AC Milan coach off to the best possible start with a scintillating 3-1 victory over Lazio at the San Siro. Meanwhile Nemanja Vidic was sent-off on his debut for Inter Milan in their 0-0 draw at Torino yesterday. New Rossoneri signing Fernando Torres was in the stands alongside president Silvio Berlusconi, to watch goals from Keisuke Honda, Sulley Muntari and a Jeremy Menez penalty give Inzaghi's men three well-earned points. "Today we won, but we mustn't delude ourselves," Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia. "For the first hour we played a near perfect game, then we struggled a bit against Lazio, who I think will be the surprise team this season. "We have created a good group here, which makes me happy. Even if we lose a few games, it will be against teams who are stronger, not those who have more desire." Initially, Milan looked nervous in defence with Lazio keen to exploit centre back Daniele Bonera, who had lined up in the left back position, but it wasn't long before any trepidation was extinguished, as Milan opened the scoring after just seven minutes. Barca completely dominated possession in the opening 45 minutes, but failed to create clear-cut chances as Sergio Asenjo parried a drive from Pedro before turning a deflected Messi free-kick onto the post.
